hiii i come bearing a very silly wip question

for whichever wip you think would be the funniest to answer for... please tell me what a discord server with the characters would be like. is it a fun hangout with friends? is it a discourse-riddled nightmare? maybe both?

Multi!! I was going to talk about the androids from TFA because they already organize their chats in a serveresque format but a Nicea server would be so much funnier. Cady started the server but got bored of making admin decisions so he added Rodney. Rodney was like "uh…great but I don't know either" and Gil was like "nonono I got you" and got Rodney all up to speed and now they are Discord admin spouses as they were meant to be (again. mlm/wlw solidarity). Of course the whole crew of the Nicea is on there, plus Bo, Celia, and Martin, and eventually Tatya. They all have their own circles within the server. And oops this was so delightful to me it got long so

Cady: has had Nitro from the beginning, which he uses to post gigantic ascii pictures that he creates, and is always the first person to try whatever new feature. He loves soundboards so much. He's also usually the person hosting Jackbox or otherwise streaming something (playing some horror game and screaming every time he gets jumpscared, or being way too serious about a flash game that he's way too good at).

Declan: has almost every channel muted because he can't stand the endless notifications. Cady made him a channel for his special interests, #declans-amphitheatre, which he had every intention of using for five minutes and then forgetting about it (for real or on purpose), but it's actually become a space that most of the server members pay attention to. He also shows up to the politics channel when summoned because there are some things that he keeps tabs on and knows Everything about.

Rodney: has never muted any of the channels and just deals with the onslaught of information. He wants to Know. He has his own black heart emoji that is optimized for both dark and light mode, and he reacts to everything with it. He keeps second guessing the organization of the server and is usually the one revoking privileges that Cady gave to someone then forgot about. But his favorite thing to do is post goofy things he encounters in his historical research, followed by talking at length about action movie choreography and watching Cady play (non-screaming) games.

Gil: constantly sends messages with no context because she's so deep in thinking about it that she forgot no one else knows what she's talking about. It's usually drama from the school where she teaches or home improvement plans. She and Rodney had an admin channel but it's barely about admin stuff at this point - they're just talking about politics and philosophy. On the public channels she is the reaction meme queen and also tied with Tristan as the most likely to ask everyone to show up to an event/rally for something.

Tristan: mostly posts her landscape photography and videos of her and Gil ballroom dancing. She hangs out in the voice channels a lot because she likes doing things while other people talk to her. Since the two people most likely to be in the voice chat are Cady and Bo, she also gets to hear a lot of chaos and nonsense that is extremely funny to her. She has tried to explain it to Gil and failed so many times that now she just shrugs and says "friendship?"

Isabel: most likely to send goofy selfies to the chat, half of which are just her poking fun at whichever server member she's hanging out with (they're in the background doing something else). She also posts her song recordings, which are 90% serious samples of her work and 10% meme songs that she also wrote, and you can't always tell which is which without clicking. She agonized over adding Tatya to the server because she didn't want it to devolve into strange flirtational chaos but she immediately begged Cady not to add his nephews (Neb & Oran) to the server because their love language is being fucking annoying.

Spinder: the emoji polls guy. Usually it's about something he's working on, like an embroidery piece, but it's also sometimes about whether he should get involved with whatever the tailors are up to or an extremely meme question (you know, the kind where you answer "vanilla extract") or sometimes something important and serious like when they're going to play Jackbox. He knows the name of almost every emoji and emote offhand but he does not use :rod: (Rodney's heart).

Bo: treated the server as a personal foodstagram to the point that they got their own channel, #restaurant-recommendations. He rarely messages on the server but is always emoji-reacting to random things and spends an inexplicable amount of time in the voice channels with Tristan.

Tatya: is honestly just so excited to see everyone else being excited. She's the other person most likely to message #restaurant-recommendations with suggestions for places and snacks out in her locality, which no one is in any hurry to go all the way back to. Despite her FTL connection her messages are most often a little bit slow and sometimes jump out of order. She asks lots of questions about the server like "why aren't Neb and Oran allowed here? also who are Neb and Oran?" and posts pictures of cool things she sees in the desert where she lives. Currently there is a debate going on among the triumvirate of admins whether she should get her own channel, #tatyas-travelogue. Or something like that. They can workshop it.

Celia: the server's hypemaster. Most likely to say "okay I'm catching up on all this and what the fuck????" in the main and drama channels, and has genuinely become enamored with #declans-amphitheatre and has learned an enormous amount of interesting things about pens by talking to Declan there. She always reacts with a relevant emoji and always votes the most YES option in every poll about whether Spinder should get involved in tailor schemes. She also loves Isabel's meme songs and Tatya's weird space snacks and thinks Cady is the only person she has ever encountered who is More than she is.

Martin: is never online except when summoned for Jackbox or when Cady begs him to post a picture of his pottery, but you will take his membership in this server out of his cold dead hands. He has had to swear not to also add his sons (Neb and Oran).

It was actually really for 75% of the film. I hated the last 25 min or so. Seem like a new writer took over. The actual ending was not my cup of tea at all. Didn't seem to fit the lead up at all.

Declan & Gil

Declan is happy that Tristan has someone else in her life telling her to stop blaming herself for Cady's death, because even though she introduced him to warp racing everyone knows Cady did whatever he damn well felt like and no one can hold her (the person who also got out of warp racing and told Cady to) accountable for his actions. He also likes listening to Gil's tales of school shenanigans and explanations of her craft projects. He feels like she actually listens when he talks, and that means a lot. But he's never fully gotten over the feeling of envy that Tristan gets to have a partner while he remains in permanent mourning. He tries not to let it color his relationship with Gil. But on some level Gil knows that's what he thinks and she can't really blame him. She actually knows a lot more about Declan in general than he knows about her, not because he's not interested in her life but because she's good friends with Rodney, and Rodney always ends up eventually talking about Declan. She also knows things that Declan doesn't (or at least doesn't discover until Nicea), like that Rodney has been secretly borrowing Declan's storage unit keys to check up on things. She won't say this to anyone except Tristan but she wishes there was more she could do for him beyond occasional gifts and distractions.

Declan & Tatya

I harp on how Tatya is a lover and a flirt and oupy but she is also a genuine professional, and when she's around Declan (read: the boss) she gets right to the point and is very clear about what she can and can't do. Declan loves this, and also loves the absolute smoothness of her warps. Like, professional warp witches who work out of contracting companies do good warps, but never with the same almost-imperceptible entry and exit Tatya can manage. Declan is, however, kind of over the conflict between her and Isabel. It seems to be mostly ribbing, and they keep it out of his bridge, but oh boy does he not want to have to lay down the law about them shutting up, so he hopes it doesn't become anything beyond that. For the most part Declan just doesn't think about Tatya outside of her doing her job or hanging out in the bridge - even though she's constantly in the Nicea instead of her own attached ship she hasn't been incorporated into the flow of the crew in his opinion - but he is vaguely fond of her presence, maybe because she reminds him a little of Cady. Tatya mostly just wants to impress him, because she wants to do well and get paid, but also it's obvious to her that he's in charge of this weird quasi-family dynamic and if he's cool with her, then Isabel has to actually face her requests instead of complaining to this guy about it (if anyone actually complains to this guy. she's beginning to doubt that he even accepts complaints).

Declan & Bo

To be perfectly honest Declan doesn't get Bo. No one really does except Tristan but Declan is especially ??? when it comes to them. On the plus side, Bo is usually pretty quiet and doesn't try to draw Declan into shenanigans. On the minus side, they're always saying weird shit and getting everyone around them to be loud and eating everything (that can be a plus too. depends on whether they're eating the things he wanted). Because Bo is very pro-warp racing, Declan has always been kind of suspicious of them, but Cady always came back in one piece, so… He doesn't blame Bo for Cady's death exactly, but he also very much does not not blame them for it. Without easy access to a warp witch even Cady's thrill-seeking ass would not be out there warp racing so much, but also without that witch being Bo that might have been a more dangerous prospect. Perhaps the best description of their relationship is that Declan tolerates Bo, in the most neutral way possible, and Bo thinks that Declan is a real solid guy. Nothing like Cady, and probably doesn't even like them, but still solid. And also sometimes points them to the food in his fridge he doesn't want, which they are happy to take care of. After spending a decade with Cady Bo has a lot more understanding of Declan, but I'm not sure how much that comes out in their interactions.

Declan & Horatio

Declan has an immense respect for Horatio based 50% on Horatio's meticulously-kept records. I realized because of this ask that if Nicea and AOM take place at roughly the same time (as I assumed) and Cady picked up the old dashboard corona from Horatio a little over ten years ago, this means that Horatio has been running a little side hustle in plant sales since he was in college, which honestly checks out. But I think that also means that Declan has never seen Horatio's shop before Nicea, because that definitely didn't exist a decade ago. Still, Horatio has always kept handwritten sales records in an extremely neat and readable print hand (Declan can't fathom this. how can you write that much print, with a pen, no less) and Declan is extremely enchanted by this. The other 50% of Declan's respect comes from the fact that Horatio was the one who decorated Cady's funeral (in this culture, more a party/celebration of life than a funeral, and divorced from the actual burial) and never once made a fuss to him about anything or turned his customer-service cheerfulness on him. There was simply a moment as Horatio was packing up everything where, unprompted, Horatio cut him an orchid to put on Cady's grave, and explained that it was a Summer Band symbol of grief. Horatio, for his part, has no idea what it feels like to lose someone like Declan has - multiple times! - but he figures that's a good reason to just stay out of it.

Pairing: Glorfindel x Gil-Galad

Warning: slightly sad references

“My king,” Glorfindel greeted and—despite the correct address and the crisp bow—there was something profoundly irreverent in his demeanour which made Ereinion Gil-Galad slow his steps to a crawl.

“My Lord,” he returned the greeting in the same slightly off-colour tone. “I would have thought you’d be at the training compound by now.”

There was an unmistakable challenge echoing in those words—Glorfindel’s brows shot up on his smooth forehead in surprise.

“Would you care to accompany me, my liege?” he asked suavely; even though his words were still perfectly courteous and dignified, the quality of his voice was outright indecent by now.

Gil-Galad bowed his head regally—he had learned to play his part and perfected these superficial mannerisms over the ages and yet, he had never managed to completely erase the hint of wild, fey temperament that coursed through his blood.

“It is proper for a king to inspect his troops,” he agreed and followed the golden-haired warrior’s confident strides to the training grounds—if this execution of his duties allowed him to admire the shapely backside of his companion, no one could have faulted him for being the unwitting witness of such a spectacle.

“Ah, you deign to appear at long last,” a bulky elf called mockingly. “Let’s put your fabled skills to the test then, pretty boy!”

“Sire,” Glorfindel said, turning around in feigned distress. “Would you bestow the great honour of carrying your favour into battle to me?” He batted his eyelashes very prettily and pursed his rosy, seductively plump lips to be even more convincing.

“For a sparring match? Here? Now?” Gil-Galad’s carefully cultivated mask of regal aloofness slipped for a moment—he had not been prepared for such a request and he carried nothing on his person that might have served as a token of his favour.

The petition itself and his own willingness to indulge in such a persiflage of traditional courtship—as if something as rigid and outdated as the expectations of the happy and unscathed could ever restrain those who had thrown off the shackles of civilisation at times of dire need and now chafed under its unyielding grip—was excitingly forbidden.

Life at court could, at times, be tear-inducingly boring and so Gil-Galad was more inclined to give this potential jest more serious thought than he normally would have.

He shook his head pensively to express the doubts and apprehensions beleaguering him.

Glorfindel’s pleading gaze did not mellow though and so, stepping swiftly into the shadow of a column, Gil-Galad untied one of the golden ribbons that were braided into his hair.

“Keep it safe,” he urged as he tied it around Glorfindel’s wrist who stared at it in amazement; evidently, he had not expected that the king would indulge in his fanciful roleplay.

“I shall be invincible,” he murmured and touched the ribbon admiringly. “There is such strength still in these fibres.”

Suddenly, he was taken back to a time before this last, pristine blossom on a dying tree had even been but a thought or a wish in his parents’ hearts.

Glorfindel had seen these very ribbons be braided into thick, dark locks by pale, deft hands, and the recollection stung his heart with weariness and sorrow.

“You can return it to me,” Gil-Galad smiled, “after you’ve emerged victorious. I’ll be in my chambers and shall have refreshments ready for the hero of the hour.”

“As my king commands,” Glorfindel said and—with a sweeping bow—he turned to his challenger with the fiery determination of an old but ever-hungry soul.

He would do his king proud, he swore to himself, he would not fail Gil-Galad. He, and everyone else for that matter, was out of kings to disappoint and fail.

Lifting the golden ribbon—the last remnant of a noble family tree he had dedicated his very life to—to his numb lips, Glorfindel charged in a blaze of gold, radiating like a miniature sun in the early morning light.
