The painting shows the influence of the French painter Paul Gauguin, and Amrita's artistic style has shifted from the academic and realistic representation she studied in Paris to more modern compositions, where color and line play a prominent role. The girls' surroundings are not visible in the painting. However, the situation is clearly felt in their facial expressions, body language, and skillful use of color.

The three women appear contemplative, melancholic, and at the same time resigned to their inevitable fate: being women in a masculine and oppressive social system. Sher-Gil describes her feelings after first arriving in India: “I realized my real artistic mission, to interpret the life of Indians and particularly the poor Indians pictorially; to paint those silent images of infinite submission and patience,... to reproduce on canvas the impression those sad eyes created on me.” via

Drawn to painting from an early age, Sher-Gil started formal lessons at the age of eight. She first gained recognition at the age of 19, for her 1932 oil painting Young Girls. Sher-Gil depicted everyday life of the people in her paintings.”
