I thought today - the TV show I'd really like to see is one about a medieval monastery.
You could have all kinds of characters: the pious guy who joined because he wanted to serve God, the son born out of wedlock sent there to cover up his parents' shame, the geek who wanted to study Latin but couldn't afford to go into university, the former knight sick of violence and afraid for his soul... Plus monasteries were centres of pilgrimage and places where criminals could take refuge, so we can have a lot of characters who crop up for a few episodes and leave.
Some plotlines I thought of:
Our relics aren't bringing in the pilgrims the way they used to - what do we do?
A women fleeing an abusive marriage has taken shelter in the monastery - how will the brothers respond to having a women in their midst?
One of the monks wants to leave - will the abbot accept or not?
A murderer has taken refuge in the abbey, and the abbot decides to try and save his soul - what will happen?
People are coming to the monastery for food during the famine, but the monastery is itself short of food - how will this be dealt with?
War has broken out between two local lords, and the monks attempt to broker a treaty - will it work?
I've already mentioned some reasons why I think this setting would lend itself to television, but I'd also love to make it for two other reasons:
Get people to understand how weird medieval religion could get, but also that, within its own frame of reference, it was a reasonable and consistent belief system.
Show people that the Middle Ages consisted of more than just muddy people stabbing each other and burning scientists at the stake.

"It killed him. It would have killed me. You saw me. You saved more than my life. You saved my fuckin soul."
Eddie held Roland and kissed his cheek. Tasted his tears.

I just finished reading them so forgive me but I have to say something dkfbehaiaokabwoo
Roland is cursed with immortality/constant death and rebirth, mainly because he refuses to change and turn from whatever he has his sights on. But this time when he is in the desert he hears Gan speak and say it could be different. There is a choice now. If Roland chooses to change he can finally have rest and go to the clearing at the end of the path.
I don’t know if he lives his life up to the desert each time, I’m inclined to think not since he steps through the door and is just there, I think it’s the Tower offering him a sort of… a bonus item at the start of a DnD campaign.
I don’t think there are right choices, because the choices he makes lead to the next ones. Like letting Jake fall leads to catching Walter which leads to losing his fingers and finding the doors on the beach and his new ka-tet. This in turn leads to River Crossing, to Lud, to the Callas, Maine, Odd’s Lane and finally Can’-Ka No Rey.
The implication of the horn is that Roland’s choices differ this time. He might not let Jake fall and thus not catch Walter. He might not get to the Western Sea, might never see New York, or come to them another way. He might find another way to the Tower that doesn’t lead to the birth of Mordred. A thousand possibilities in a thousand different cycles.
He follows the beam every time but it’s what happens along the bath of the beam that matters.
Because it’s Stephen King, and that guy hates endings more than I hate soggy bread, we aren’t supposed to know. It might be his vision was that the journey to the Dark Tower never ends. But I agree that I desperately want it to finish someday and for Roland to get his rest, so I choose to believe that this time is different and Roland will choose to love and laugh sooner than he does in the last turn of the wheel.
I’m not sure any of this matters or makes sense but I love these books and their non-ending so much it makes my head hurt.
Can we please talk about the dark tower??? Like was the ending implying that this cycle is going to go on forever??? And if not, which I’m seriously hoping for, at what point does Roland do the right thing? Is there even a right thing to do in his situation?? Also, if he has the horn this time around, does that mean he relived his entire life up until that point every single time? And if that’s true, then he’s technically immortal, but also technically not?, because he’s essentially starting over without the knowledge that he’s been through everything already, so does that make him not immortal?

Roland: Finally I have reached the Dark Tower. I have served ka all my life, have sacrificed myself, my friends, and my family to the all-consuming quest that ka demanded of me. Now I will reach my reward, or at least...my resolution.

Man, I fucking miss Blackwall. Nobody lied like that man. Solas was all half-truths and mysterious double meanings like a poetic fortune cookie. But Blackwall just straight-up pulled shit out of his ass with 0 fucks give.
Wings of Valor for valor type of shit
When the Inquisitor first finds him, this asshole’s out in some random field, bullshitting a bunch of wannabe Grey Wardens like it’s amateur hour at Liars’ Anonymous. Out here cosplaying with 0 shame
Varric gets suspicious, starts poking at him like, “Hey, buddy, what’s your deal?” and Blackwall just hits him with a “No.” Like, not even a good lie just “No.” Sus as hell, and somehow everyone’s like, “Seems legit, carry on”
Absolute icon. A lying sack of shit, but our lying sack of shit. Man deserves a medal for audacity alone
