i have so much discomfort still about being roped into trans "masc" over trans Man. masculinity as a concept feels too rooted in some prevailing idea Of it, an image or performance or something that is like a man-- Wants to be Like a man-- but isn't. and some people hear that and breathe a sigh of relief that at least you're not a man.

but to me "man" is what's most open-ended, not "masc" because a man is anything, you see men who look and act like anything all the time, man is the underline, but masculinity... is both airy and heavy with expectations i don't have nor want to meet. there's no guarantee men are "masculine" (and to be clear "feminine" is obviously just as fraught.) and the further one moves or is born from the centre of "correct" gender, by race or disability or fatness or poverty or attraction etc.... well you know.

"butch" on its own feels so much better and more honest for me because whether a butch man or butch dyke or butch butch, it can only imply total diversion, a queer(ed) masculinity, and one that exists in its own sphere-- maybe You won't see a butch as masculine but the butch is masculine in their world and nothing else matters, nothing else is as real.

it feels possible to be a non-passing man, but masculinity for me carries connotations of passing by larger metrics. idk, i've never liked it, i thought my feelings would change over the years, but they haven't and i wish there was an easy way to request opting out. obviously i'm not knocking anyone who fits under this umbrella but purely about where i fit myself.

transreads.org is a fantastic resource for queer literature and history, and the best part is that it's FREE! There's no excuse to be ignorant when the information is being handed to you like this.

Leslie Feinberg also has all of hir works free online if you are particularly interested in lesbian history and literature. They are available as downloadable PDFs, and I believe they are on the internet archive aswell.

transreads.org also has a great section on Palestinian queer literature if that's something that interests you, it's important that we learn about queerness outside of America. I've dabbled in a few of these books and essays and poems and they're very cool! I really do enjoy learning about queerness in other cultures, I hope you all can find joy in that too!!
