david tennant as hedwig fancast: yay or nay?
Ohh, boy. Well, when I first read this, my immediate thought was "Hell yay, but he'd have to fight Michael for it." Haha.
I love that we have this video of Michael just a few years ago talking about desperately wanting to play Hedwig, and you're asking about the possibility of David as Hedwig. It's become almost a long-running joke about how Michael and David have always been up for the same parts/thought of as being the same "type" of actor, so it seems entirely fitting that I could easily see either one of them as Hedwig...but they would give very different interpretations/versions of the character.
So I could see this being something very much like what Michael and David have talked about before, about having a "retirement plan" where they are doing a theatrical touring production of Good Omens and swapping roles every night. Maybe one of them plays Hedwig and one plays Yitzhak one night, and then swapped the next? Or within the same show, Michael/David plays Hedwig for half the show and Yitzhak for the other half? The possibilities really are quite numerous...
I did have the opportunity to see John Cameron Mitchell as Hedwig on Broadway years ago and he was absolutely transcendent in the role, to where it's almost impossible for me to picture anyone else. But in thinking of your question along with the physical demands of the role (and knowing how much David lived up to the task of playing Macbeth), I think David could definitely handle the physicality of Hedwig. I'd also love to hear him sing "Sugar Daddy" (for oh so many delicious reasons...) and I think he would kill it on "The Origin of Love." That's not even getting into how gorgeous David would look in the costumes, of course. Even the drag outfit he wore in Much Ado has some shades of Hedwig to it, in fact (mainly the denim skirt, stockings, and boots)...
So yes, I would absolutely have to vote in the affirmative for a David Tennant fancast of Hedwig, with or without Michael Sheen. Please, universe, let's make it happen...
#chipadip#reply post#david tennant#soft scottish hipster gigolo#michael sheen#welsh seduction machine#hedwig and the angry inch#can't have one without the other#like if we could just have Michael and David doing various theatrical productions together for the rest of ever#it's also interesting to me because David is the first person i've ever heard Michael say he wants to grow old with#and i've wondered if he never really thought about growing old with someone before David#that would be amazing#watching Michael in Nye i can say he is a force of nature on stage#so to see him and David feeding off each other live would be incredible#but yes to David as Hedwig#please universe make this happen#thoughts#discourse

I'm so excited for all the Lestat music. Daniel Hart really is brilliant. He said something (can't find it, was it on twitter or in his reddit AMA) about how Lestat's music would have a range of tones and styles (he said Hedwig and Rocky were more about using the music to tell a story, not that all the music would be camp/glam--wish I could find the exact statement), which makes sense with all the influences Rolin mentioned. So if someone doesn't like Long Face, they might like the music at the more *serious* end of the spectrum. I love that they listed Florence and the Machine, anything in that vein would be incredible....
The reaction to Long Face has generally been lots of praise, which I think is accurate. Music is subjective and everyone has different levels of appreciation for camp, so it's not like someone is "wrong" if they don't like it, but I think it's really clever and really fun. Plus yes, Sam sounds fantastic. I LOVED this description of the song in Vulture:
“Sam Reid’s regular line deliveries are basically the equivalent of a Baroque painting of a hot man glaring at you (think Caravaggio’s David With the Head of Goliath painting, but sexy), so I’m unsurprised that his singing voice is the exact same thing. Big fan of how his ‘ooh ooh ooh, wah aah’ sounds like Jim Morrison doing a Dracula impression. It’s a bop. I’m so sorry to Stuart Townsend for getting replaced as Aragorn in the Lord of the Rings trilogy and now having his rock star Lestat from Queen of the Damned shown up so thoroughly"
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/GTr5_0qaQAEai0m?format=jpg&name=large
Me too, anon! And yeah, I figured the referencing to Hedwig and Rocky Horror was more about how much narrative the songs were going to take on more so than the actual sound, which goes back to my point that the show isn't looking at making commercial Top 40 hits, it's making musical theatre, haha.
The whole point in the book too is that Lestat starts spilling vampire secrets in songs to piss everyone off worse than Louis did with IWTV, so I do think they'll probably be using at least some of the music to explore vampire history and maybe even fold in some things from the later VC books they might not get to (I'd be surprised if they didn't touch on things from Blood and Gold in particular with Marius' introduction, for instance).
But yes! Love the song, love the influences, and I especially love that quote from Vulture. Just - - what a time to be alive, haha.

hi there!!! I’m your content creator secret santa 🤫🎄 how are you?? do you have anything you’re looking forward to this (holiday) season?
I’ve checked out your blog to see what kinds of things you enjoy, but I’d love to hear from you directly 😊
what are some of your favorite shows and movies? who are your favorite characters? ships? do you have any particularly favored music artists lately? maybe specific songs? maybe you even have some favorite books you’d like to share! what about favorite colors?
is there anything you absolutely DON’T want? lol just in case 😅
I hope you have a great rest of your week!
HII!!! I have been preparing for this question for a couple of days and right now immediately I've forgotten everything I know and like, and have ever liked.
[Pause to review my blog and get my thoughts in order]
i love red, green and orange. all the traffic lights baby!
Im looking forward to the holidays it's been... a year.
My ship (just the one rn *sob): I'm currently in Homicide: Life on the Street (1993 - 2000) hell. I love Frank Pembleton and Tim Bayliss with my whole heart, but a 30 year old show and 65 year old men are a bit of a hard ask even from a kind Santa. Bayliss was my first canon bi character on TV and I've not been right since.
Update: Earlier in the year I was heavily into Joanne Davidson/Kate Fleming from Line of Duty (2012 - 2021) until I was gratified by this fic: Bleed into me by Authorette and somehow never thought of it again.
(Yeah not sure about the non-canon (but one half queer in canon) unhappy ending cop duos being my shipping highlight of the year)
Movies: I love Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2001), Pride (2014), Barber (2023), Gattaca (1997), Romy and Michele's High School Reunion (1997), Trust (1990)
Shows: Bob and Rose (2001), Homicide ..(ahahaha) Trust me (2017), Borderliner / Grenseland (2017)
People: I think Rebecca Ferguson, Raul Esparza, Hunter Schaefer, Lesley Sharp, Ethan Hawke, Carla Gugino, Laura Main, Brain Molko, Emma D'Arcy, Vanessa Kirby, Katie McGrath, Caity Lotz, Toby Stephens, Adrienne Shelly, Alexander Skarsgard, Patricia Arquette, Emerald Fennell and David Harbour are just so pretty
Characters: Omar Little (The Wire 2002 - 2008), Catherine Cawood (Happy Valley 2014 - 2023), Christine Chapel (Star Trek Strange new Worlds 2022), Alex Vause (Orange is the new black 2013 - 2019), Nomi Marks (Sense8 2015 - 2017), Joan Holloway/Harris (Mad Men 2007 - 2015), and Deran Cody (Animal Kingdom 2016 - 2022), Charles (Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994), Carrie Mathison (Homeland 2011 - 2020), Patsy Mount (Call the Midwife)
As for hates... I dont like too many fancy fonts on gifs, or double exposures that make people look like they have two heads (I'm guilty of this, yes, yes). Not big on the music. My spotify wrapped this year was where I was reminded that I had just listened to Alanis Morissette, The Crystal Method, Bright Eyes and Placebo and things-to-run-to as I always do. Every year. It is an utter wasteland.
Thank you in advance I'm sure whatever you make will be wonderful. I love this exchange so much. Both ways giving and receiving.
#i am a heathen and do not read#please let me know if this was helpful? i'm feeling that all of these old things are probably not helpful...#oh lordy look at me go with my cops and criminals and unsorted queer

hai love <3<3<3
26. how many pillows do you sleep with?
ONE. like a boring person. it's also cuz I own but one pillow lmao and back in first year of uni my friend had to bodily drag me to the shops to buy it after I revealed that I've been using a pile of clothes for 3 months (in my defence it was during the pandemic)
36. favorite movie?
oof I always stumble over those cuz I barely watch movies hdjsjdks and when I do I just rewatch the same few 20 times over. I think I always say wall e? it's one of the few we had downloaded at home, me and my brother watched it so many times together when his eye-head-limbs proportions were still comically cartoonish (I love him)
41. top 10 favorite songs
oh gosh okay. I'll try my best haha. these might not be top 10 exactly but I do love these songs. in no particular order:
致青春 (to youth)
Wicked Little Town from Hedwig and the Angry Inch
One Headlight by the Wallflowers
All the Madmen by David Bowie
Ticket to the Moon by ELO
And They're Off by William Finn
Under Pressure by Queen/Bowie
this song
and uhhh also 2 musicals (yes the whole musicals. in their entirety.) known as Falsettos and Great Comet. I can't pick anything from them but I'm so obsessed with them still. neither of them make any sense yet they understand me perfectly. what a mystery. (half joking)

David Yates: There are two nods to Potter at least musically, and that's the first moment we fly over the mountain, since you see Hogwarts, and it's kind of like you have to play Hedwig's theme. But James, bless him, still said, "What, David, I know you'll really use Hedwig's theme, but I've also written this piece as well", which is sort of an iteration of a piece he wrote for FB1, but then develope for FB2. It was beautiful by the way and really evocative, but I said, "James, you know what, it's gotta be Hedwig because that's what we associate with the school." But we recorded both just so we had both, and he was so gracious and he said, "I know you're gonna use Hedwig idea." I said, "Yes, I'm gonna use Hedwig." And the other one is just the tinkle of the WB. We always do that thing, but we just remind people this is Potter-esque and it's part of the world.

Him and Key are really so much alike
ah yes, key's made it obvious a few times, that david bowie is a big influence on how he expresses himself, and ren is inspired by him too apparently! love them <3
but wow, he looks gorgeous in that shoot. i saw the cover pic, but the others too are
i love that ren's so successful on the musical scene, and that he's playing such iconic and inspiring lgbt+ characters. and seems to find them so fulfilling. first jamie, now hedwig. he's just amazing, honestly.
and incredibly beautiful look at this
i love ren, i really do. also, they should get him back on amasat immediately please. i wanna see more key x ren interaction in my life :(

Okay! So here’s my Harry Potter AU that’s a little more focused on Jack and the boys (a completely different AU from the one featuring the Delanceys)
Harry Potter AU

Jack Kelly- Harry Potter
Crutchie Morris- Hermione Granger
Racetrack Higgins- Ron Weasley
Katherine Plumber- Ginny Weasley

Mike- George Weasley
Ike- Fred Weasley
Albert DaSilva- Percy Weasley
Henry- Charlie Weasley
Darcy- Bill Weasley
Pulitzer- Arthur Weasley
Emmaline Pulitzer (OC)- Molly Weasley
These are all the characters that I have so far, because there’s so many other characters in both of these fandoms it’s hard to commit to having each person in just one place 😂
If you have any suggestions for which other characters should go where, Lemme know!
The Story
Jack Kelly is an orphan. He has been ever since he was a baby.
He grows up in foster homes all over the place, mostly Harlem and Brooklyn until he is settled in Manhattan with an uptight couple and their snotty son want nothing more than to look like saints to the rest of the world. That, and after the systems finds out that the wife is actually Jack’s estranged aunt, he’s stuck there. (Don’t have the Dursleys down yet. Any ideas?)
Jack’s aunt basically disowned her sister after finding out that she was a witch.
Anyways
Jack is stuck there from the age of six and made somewhat of a servant in the household. His room is the broom closet beneath the stairs and he gets locked in at night, only to have his cousin wake him up by jumping up and down on the stairs over and over again.
From a young age, Jack is well aware of the fact that he is different. Odd things have always happened to him. Like magic.
But he never believed in magic. At least, the last time he’d said he had his aunt had slapped him across the face. So he kept quiet about the idea until nearly his eleventh birthday.
He gets a letter. One his uncle won’t let him read.
Upset by this, but unable to argue in fear of being locked back in the closet or starved, Jack lets it go. Until another letter comes.
Letters come everyday at a constant and Jack’s uncle makes a point to throw them away or burn them and never let Jack read it. Not even after a flock of owls come to deliver his hundreds of the same letters.
Eventually, after running them away from home to avoid the letters. and camping out somewhere far away, a mysterious man comes to see Jack on his birthday.
The man, Teddy, is large and odd and Jack is frightened of him at first, before Teddy explains to him what’s going on. Jack is a wizard. And it’s time to start wizard school at Hogwarts.
Ecstatic at the very idea, Jack rushes to go immediately, but is grabbed by his uncle and pulled back, told he is forbidden to go. So Teddy casts a spell on the other man, giving him features of a pig, before taking Jack and leading him away
Teddy tells him about his parents James and Lucille Kelly. He tells him about how Jack himself is a legend in the wizard world and once they make it to diagon alley everyone would immediately recognize Jack because of the lightning bolt scar he’d had on his chin ever since he was little. (Yes it’s on his chin, on the right, i think. Deal with it)
Teddy would get him everything he needs with the money that Jack’s parents left behind (also... do they ever explain how on earth Harry’s parents had so much money. I’m not quite a Harry Potter nerd. Not yet. But... how?)
Jack would get his wand (yes with a Phoenix feather core) he’d get his animal. A snow owl. Hedwig. It’s still Hedwig. She adores Jack.
When it’s time for Jack to finally head off to school, he’s left alone in the train station with his ticket that has station 9 and 3/4 written on it. He can’t find it, and after asking for help, he’s shoved aside only to fall into another boy with a large family in front of him and a mother who immediately tells him to get up and hurry along.
The boy introduces himself as Race and asks Jack where he’s headed. Jack tells him the truth and Race’s face lights up.
Race is the youngest of seven kids. Yes, it’s the Pulitzer family. Yes, Pulitzer is a good guy in this. Yes, Katherine is still older than Race.
Race is just so excited to have met someone his age before getting on the train. He does not want to spend the entire ride with four of his big brothers and his big sister all alone with them trying to frighten him about starting a new school
Race asks his mother if they can show Jack how to get to the train and Emmaline Pulitzer would tell Jack not to worry, that it was Anthony’s first time too. And Race would get mad at her for telling Jack his real name.
Jack and Race would be friends immediately. Even after Mike and Ike ask Jack a whole bunch of questions and do their best to embarrass their little brother.
Jack buys Race and him candy when the cart comes around and Race turns down anything even though it’s so clear that he wants some. Jack recognizes a poor kid as a poor kid himself. So he buys them a bunch of candy.
Eventually, another boy joins them in the train. A Charlie Morris. An intelligent, quick witted know it all who Race immediately clashes with but who Jack takes a liking to.
The three of them are rarely ever apart after that meeting, especially when they all realize that they have all been misfits their entire lives. Jack because he’s an orphan, Race because he’s poor and the youngest of seven kids (six brothers), and Charlie because of his bum leg.
Though Jack is immediately popular at hogwarts, he still has that feeling of not belonging and clings to his two friends all though his journey at this school
The Pulitzer family is know for being the large, poor family who have sent their kids to hogwarts for years. Joseph Pulitzer used to be extremely wealthy and was known for doing whatever needed to be done to keep it that way until he met Emmaline and she eventually told him she was pregnant. He used to be on Snyder’s side, but left for the sake of his family who he loves more than life (he is especially close with his only daughter)
He lost most of his money when Snyder came back around to get revenge on him for leaving and telling others about plans he had or any information that could potentially lead anyone to finding him. When this happened, it was close to the same time Snyder had killed James and Lucille Kelly. Snyder goes after Pulitzer, planning to kill him, threatening Pulitzer’s whole family, including his youngest son who wasn’t even one at the time, that he’d managed to pick up and almost take away.
The very idea of that happening haunts Race to this day
Race used to have nightmares about it, not fully remembering the situation since he was so little, but being told about it by one of his big brothers one day.
Race would run to Pulitzer almost every night after that, complaining and sobbing about a nightmare.
During that encounter, Pulitzer gave Snyder everything he had to protect Race before Emmaline managed to take her baby away from the evil wizard and Race believes he is the reason that his family is now poor
(If that all makes sense)
Charlie is a muggle-born wizard. He was born with one bum leg that he eventually fixes for himself after a lot of studying. But that doesn’t happen until nearly graduation, after several others offer to help. He always refuses. He wants the satisfaction of doing it himself
He has two very loving parents who did their best to spoil him rotten as a child and were so excited to find out that their little boy was magic.
They are so supportive of everything he does and they make a point to tell him how much they love him.
Those are just a couple ideas. Anything you guys would change? Any scenes you wanna see? Any specific characters you wanna hear about? Send me an ask! And for more AUs, check out my list! (PS, I have three asks for The Outsiders 😂 so that ones coming)

Few words about "GLASS". [Heavy spoiler alert]
So... Oh My God!! I've just finally watched "GLASS", and it's... Ah, I can't express my feelings! Not now at least lol It was a really amazing movie! The story, the original atmosphere, the music, the characters, the actors! It really made me freeze for a long minutes after the ending! It was such a powerful movie! It really made me shook even though I've already known the ending (I was accidently spoiled on twitter). And it took all my strenght not to cry at the end! I did teared up few times, but I had to hold myself together to watch the movie till the end. Can't wait for the DVD to cry my eyes out!T__T I do understand now why some people could not fully understand this movie. But it doesn't say anything bad about the movie at all! It's the opposite actually. It's really something how "GLASS" was able to join not only the stories of "Split" and "Unbreakable", but their ideas and atmosphere. I'm still under a huge impression! And even the saddest ending doesn't make me feel like the movie was bad or something. No, at all. It’s unfair, yes. Dunn was innocent, as well as Kevin. Yes, his idenities had made a lot of crimes, but he, the real he was still an innocent person who has suffered too much in his short and sad life. And the worst part is that Kevin still had a chance! He had a chance to live without being scared of life, to be the one who keeps the light. And It's all thanks to Casey, the only person who refused to see only bad in him, the only one who saw the real him. And that's exactly what makes his fate even more dramatic, and makes it so unfair and sad. Yes, he has found his peace, but unfortunately it happened right at the moment when he has also found the life that was taken from him when he was still a child... When he was finally able to stay in the light without any fear. And I absolutely loved Kevin and Casey's storyline! Yes, I can confidently say that they are canon!XD But it's not that kind of canon we are used to. Their relationships, their love (yes, this word was pronounced in the movie even) is not that extremely sexualised type of love we used to see in the movies. It's so much deeper! And it tears my heart apart!T__T That last scene... his words... the gentle kiss... the expression on Casey's face when she saw Kevin on that record... They gave us much much more than any modern sexualised romantic storyline could offer. I am so upset but at the same time I'm so glad that Kevin finally knew the love that was stolen from him... Innocent, deep, selfless, compassionate love 💔 It was extremely sad to see not only Kevin's death, but also to see how all of them were dying... especially Hedwig as he's still just a child, and Dannis... I am so glad that Dennis finally realised that they were wrong. He didn't want all of those deaths, we could see it in "Split", and in the "Glass" he has finally walked away from path the Horde chose. The story of Kevin is really heart breaking! It hurts to think about him, about the life and love that were taken from him. So damn unfair and sad!T__T I loved the story of David and Joseph too. Their relationships, the way they showed that moments from the past. Such a whole, complete and at the same time very sad story. David's fate was unfair and very cruel. And I'm still a little bit shocked over it even though I knew that it was going happen. And Mister Glass... he was inimitable! He is a bad guy but why is it so hard to dislike him?XD He manipulated them, he was the reason of all those deaths, but still... And all other characters were good as well! I loved to see my beloved Casey, to see grown up Joseph, and always loving Mrs. Price. They all were so on point! As well as Dr. Ellie Staple (even if she turned out to be an evil bitch XD). I loved to hate you lady, you fooled everyone but was also fooled in the end. And I can talk for hours about the brilliant cast and their acting! But James McAvoy is just... stole the whole show once again! XD He is a really outstanding actor! I just have no words and at the same time I wanna talk about him for hours! lol His acting is so... incredible, brilliant, tremendous! I'm so sorry but my poor knowledge of english doesn't allow me to express all my thoughts and feelings about him and his acting skills! ^_^; But I think you get what I'm talking about. So, in the conclusion, I just want to say that I LOVED this movie! It is really a movie for a soul. I'm surely gonna see it again, but not too soon unfortunately. My exams don't give me the air to breath and any free time right now... like at all. It's a miracle that I could go to see it today (few free hours in the sunday morning) and I'm deffinitely gonna see it more when my exams come to an end! I honestly didn't want this post to be this long, but... I just needed to speak out all my feelings and emotions, as I have too much of them! It was a really good and deep movie with a highlevel acting! Bravo to the director and to amazing actors! I really enjoyed it!
Now it’s time to listen to the “Glass” soundtrack and cry in the corner T__T My heart is broken like a glass and shattered into a million tiny pieces. Thanks for the delicious pain Mr Shyamalan! I love its bittersweet taste 💔

Mairimashita! Iruma-kun 5 - 6 | Stars Align 4 | Shinchou Yuusha 5 | No Guns Life 5
Iruma-kun 5
“Seriously, stop!” – The phrase in purple is yamerotte!, where the -tte is for emphasis. “Seriously, stop!” makes it funnier because it’s in the language I’m more fluent in though.
The demon language seems to bar some resemblance to katakana, according to the kora-! sign. Update: Maybe? Biri in demon looks a lot like the symbols for kora…
Oh, so that’s why Sabnock wears those tags…Update: Yeah, I forgot to tell you – Asmodeus’s first name is Alice, not the other way around. I read a few spoilers and apparently his mother shows up later, which is how I could tell. Therefore, the muscular demon’s name is Sabro, not Sabnock (that’s his surname).
I see the sword that Sabro generated has his symbol on it as well.
Is the big creature – the Guardian or whatever – the momma bird?...Yeah! Such a cute reunion!
Sabro is built like a guy in his 20s who works out…we’re meant to buy that he’s the same age or similar to Iruma?(!!!)...Ehhhhhhhhh, this is a demon comedy, I can buy it.
Oh my goshhhhhh…for some reason, Clara’s voice is only starting to annoy me now. (Probably because I don’t always have the volume on.)
Come to think of it, what (legally, or by whatever other demon standard) is Iruma’s surname? It’s Suzuki by human standards, but did Sullivan put him into Babylis just under the name “Iruma”?
Wait, but Eggie-sensei didn’t wipe Sabro’s name out!!!
Huh…come to think of it, this is basically the Amazing Race, complete with penalties! LOL!
Rank Owl, huh? *cue Hedwig’s Theme* I thought my Snape jokes would be the end of the Harry Potter comparisons, but there we go. (The owl even has a tie! Cuteeeeeeee!) Also, Eggie-sensei calls the last-placers kisama, so you can tell he really doesn’t like them (then again, that might just be because Iruma is one of them).
I think the “birdy bird day” is a pun on toriaezu (for the moment) from what I heard…Update: Nope, that’s not right.
(Demon Prophecy Scroll) – Yup, that’s Iruma, alright.
Apparently those hand gestures of Sullivan’s are meant to suggest the number 6…as in 666.
Ooh…ponytail demon boy. Me likey.
I think some of the girl demons are wearing their badges on their sleeves (literally), which is why they need one. According to Iruma’s uniform, the boys wear theirs on their collar.
Next time, the spotlight is on Amelie, so I’m excited! (SPOILERS: Honestly, I’ve read enough spoilers that I can’t wait to see Iruma and Azz-Azz in dresses, or evil!Iruma, or Kuromu the Akudol!)
Stars Align 4
There’s an OP for this show???
Oh, the green racquet from the OP is Toma’s…
I didn’t think a guy with the name Tsubasa would be aggressive. Maybe that’s because Tsubasa means “wing(s)”, which are fluffy and not really a name for an aggressive dude like him.
Dammit, Mitsue, you’re not doing anything!
There appears to be a sign hanging from one of the levels about the girls’ soft tennis team getting to nationals. It’s like it’s deliberately there to mock Maki and co. Update: Yeah, I thought I’d seen it before somewhere. Turns out it’s behind the prez when she dances in the ED.
I never really figured this out despite my years of learning Japanese, but do senseis call each other “sensei”? According to the audio of this show, the answer is “yes”.
Tacky = Takichi. It’s because Sakurai’s (the art teacher’s) first name is Takayuki.
Why am I so sure something bad’s about to-oh crap. Something bad did happen.
Ohnonono, please don’t repeat the thing Itsuki did to that bully…
Geez, that cat is a bit of torture now that you’ve snapped my heart into two again. I know watching Hoshiai no Sora is bad for me since I always worry about whether that abusive father is around the corner, that’s why.
Shinchou Yuusha 5
Oh, so does the feather in the OP represent Rista…? (Or would a better representation of her be her buzzer?)
Are Mash and Elulu allowed in the gods’ world…?
It’s DanMachi’s Hestia, kinda sorta…”Hestiaca” doesn’t fool me!
Aww…you ruined a perfect anime with boob grabs…
Mash does an absolutely perfect impression of Seiya (aka Ume)!
Hmmm…so what magic does Elulu have an affinity with…? I bet that’ll be a bit of foreshadowing for later…
No Guns Life 5
Mochi kinchaku. Basically a squidgy bag of soup juice and mochi.
LOL, I like the egg joke. It was nicely foreshadowed and everything.
Well, they don’t call her Scarlet for nothin’.
“…how good I am with scissors.” – Says an old man to a guy with a gun for a head, neither of which have proper head hair to prove that statement with.
Seriously, why is there unnecessary focus on Olivier’s boobs…? Can we not, male gaze?
“You’re a gun.” – Yup, someone had to say it! Juzo is a gun – he has a gun for his head, plus he’s hella muscular!
Who’s the one saying “You men have some nice bodies”? I can’t seem to figure it out without turning on the sound (which I can’t – I hav someone in earshot who I’ll disturb if I do).
So Juzo’s barrel spins when he’s nervous…?
These waves look funky.
Dude. I don’t like this angle on Olivier’s butt.
Cronen, eh? (Refers to David Cronenberg…(?) Although I’ve never watched it, I think The Fly is a masterpiece because I’m so viscerally disgusted by it.)
Iruma-kun 6
I never realised exactly how much I liked this show until I had a really bad day and then couldn’t watch it…
Smartphone = hellphone (sumaho).
Considering the frailty of cherry blossoms and Iruma’s status as a human, that’s…a highly appropriate flower! (Also, after reading a This Week in Anime where it said Iruma was living his best life at Babyls, now I think “aww” when I watch this show.)
Notably, the demon language seems to map to katakana, which is one method as to how Iruma manages to keep his status as human for so long (Iruma’s first name looks similar to the kanji for “human”).
Lookit Ameri go! Woot!
I guess demons think of humans like we think of fairies, mermaids…or demons (LOL).
I get the feeling two strokes in the upper right = tenten (since I think that’s where “ge” is), but I haven’t busted the demon language outside of that.
I just realised the teacher (Suzy) is part of the ED…in the very last shot.
Oh, right. The side character’s name is Eiko = A-ko. It’s like calling your side character Jane Doe (or calling your side character “Mob”, in a case that is in anime), but specifically for girls.

Watching Resolution: Velvet Goldmine (1998)
10. Your best friend’s favorite movie: Velvet Goldmine (1998)
List Progress: 7/12
My fiancee Andrea has long told me about how Velvet Goldmine was a formative queer film in her teen years. In the same vein as Hedwig and the Angry Inch or The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Velvet Goldmine is a big, flashy, unabashedly queer and loud musical full of conflicted and imperfect characters trying to live as boldly as themselves as possible. I missed this one during my formative years, but that was rectified this past week and I have been earwormed by many of the songs all week.
The plot of Velvet Goldmine is “rockstar makes it big, gets into drugs and burns out”, with a side of “what if David Bowie and Iggy Pop had a musical and sexual love affair?”. But you don’t watch Velvet Goldmine for the plot. You watch it to see a spectacle on your screen, and I say that in the best possible way.
Velvet Goldmine follows a David Bowie/Jobriath-expy named Brian Slade (played by Jonathan Rhys Meyers) who comes up as a bisexual rocker to make a huge impact on the glam rock scene. Ten years before the present day of the film, he staged his own assassination during a concert and disappeared from the public eye, leaving behind his wife (Toni Collette) and his collaborator/lover/Iggy Pop-expy Curt Wild (Ewan McGregor). Young reporter and former glam rock fan Arthur (played by a young and vulnerable Christian Bale) is assigned to unravel the story of what happened to Slade all those years ago and where all of the major players in his life are now. Add in Eddie Izzard as Slade’s manager and a ton of musician cameos that flew over my head, and the cast for this is packed with a lot of talent and energy. Particularly sexual energy. This is a very horny film. Be prepared for a lot of full-frontal nudity and long sex scenes, though they are all shot beautifully.
Told out of chronological order and containing a lot of artistic sweeping scenes that capture the feel of music videos, the movie is clearly set up to be an experience more than a direct story. It aims to make you feel immersed in this shiny world, rather than try to tell you a full story (the actual fate of Slade is a bit underbaked). Velvet Goldmine is far from perfect, but I cannot remember feeling so immersed in a film for a long time. (It doesn’t hurt that I’ve also watched the video for the song “Ballad of Maxwell Demon” about a dozen times this week and have hummed it many more.)
I have very little context for the historical figures these characters are based on, so I don’t know how someone coming in as a glam rock aficionado would feel about it. But for a big dive into the genre, this worked very well for me. And seeing a lot of pretty men in glitter doesn’t hurt either.
Would I Recommend It: Yes.

Glass
Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me. Post-The Village, this was probably the healthiest attitude to adopt towards one M. Night Shyamalan. But then came 2017′s Split, and with it a post-credits scene that made audiences freak out - this story takes place in the same universe as 2000′s Unbreakable, which leads us here. The final entry in Shyamalan’s trilogy about people who believe they can do extraordinary things brings together Unbreakable’s David Dunn (Bruce Willis), the single survivor of a massive train derailment who has superstrength and a knack for sensing bad guys; Elijah Price (Samuel L. Motherfucking Jackson, or SLMJ), a man born with bones so fragile they shatter like glass at the slightest impact but whose mind is on a whole other level; and Split’s Kevin Crumb aka The Beast aka Hedwig aka Patricia....you get the idea. He’s a man who has dissociative identity disorder and exhibits 24 distinct personalities, one of whom happens to be a superhuman amalgamation of animal characteristics called The Beast who punishes the impure and those who “have not suffered.” He’s super fun at parties. Put them together and what have you got? Well...
I’m not sure why the critical response to this one is so tepid because I thought it was a fantastic conclusion of a trilogy that asks us to consider the stories we tell ourselves and the untapped power of those stories. Plotwise, the main story relies on Dr. Ellie Staple (Sarah Paulson) attempting to cure these three men of their delusions of grandeur. At times she enlists the help of David’s son, Elijah’s mother, and Kevin Crumb’s kidnapping victim who survived (Anya Taylor Joy) to assist in her work. I’m sure you can guess that uh, things don’t go as she planned.
Some thoughts:
Let’s talk performances. Bruce Willis doesn’t have a lot to do, unfortunately, and he’s playing the strong stalwart type anyway, so he doesn’t get very much dialogue or inner turmoil. His best acting comes from the physicality of playing a man who moves in the world in a way that normal humans do not. SLMJ is a born scene-stealer, and charismatic as hell, even when playing catatonic. You’re just waiting for the twinkle in his eye, the twitch of his lips to reveal the inner workings of Elijah’s terrifying mind. But the real workhorse is McAvoy all the way. 24 distinct personalities is a tall order for anyone, but the seamless transition between them, the intense physicality of embodying each separate personality - I just don’t know how this kind of performance doesn’t earn an Oscar, regardless of the Academy’s disdain for genre work. He’s a masterclass, a tour de force, and even running around as a human/animal Beast God Hybrid doesn’t seem so ridiculous when he’s doing it.
Honorable mention goes to Sarah Paulson who has never done anything wrong in her life, ever, and whose hair and makeup look fucking amazing the entire time even when shit really hits the fan.
I have never heard the phrase “PB&J sandwiches” sound so terrifying in my life. Nice callback later to the guard’s abandoned PBJ as well. Shyamalan is a man who knows the devil is in the details.
I can’t believe they got not only the leads, but also the kid who played Bruce Willis’s son (Spencer Treat Clark) and SLMJ’s mom (Charlayne Woodard) to reprise their roles 19 years later! Spencer Treat Clark especially has to do some heavy emotional lifting and his scenes are just a joy to watch.
Especially affecting are some brief sequences of unused footage from Unbreakable that serve as some of David’s memories or flashbacks. No creepy CGI here, just good old fashioned 19 years younger Bruce Willis, and it’s effective as hell. Side note: Bruce Willis can still get it, even 19 years later.
There are definitely some problems with everything that’s happening here from a logistical standpoint. Sarah Paulson has 3 days to treat these people who “think they’re superheroes.” Yeah, I don’t know where you got your medical degree ma’am, but 3 days isn’t enough time to treat anything - that’s not how psychiatry works.
The subtitle of this movie could be Glass: HIPAA Violations. None of this is best practices. You can’t just go showing other patients’ someone’s MRI. No one has signed any informed consent forms. You can’t just leave patient files in unlocked cabinets. You especially cannot let a patient’s victim have a one-on-one confrontation with them in order to “cure” the patient - does anyone have ANY medical training in this movie?
Probably not, since there’s only 1 orderly in this whole goddamn wing apparently and this facility has the worst security guards to ever be hired. “Oh this nurse with particularly well-muscled calves and white crocs with no socks on is wheeling one of our most notorious patients out of the wing in a wheelchair and he has a blanket on up to the neck. Well, no further questions!”
I think it’s easy to forget based on Shyamalan’s past missteps that he’s actually an incredibly visually interesting director. I found myself marveling at the unnerving, visceral way he shoots The Beast, or the circular tracking shots of Hedwig as he skates around and around some would-be victims of The Beast. These little touches bring the larger-than-life quality of the characters closer to the audience and allows us to feel as if we’re part of the action. And his use of color palette to distinguish between David (green), Elijah (purple), and The Beast (mustard yellow) creates the same gut-level effect as the oversaturated colors of the comic books he’s honoring. It all leads to an interesting film to watch, which I don’t think he gets enough credit for.
Also, I’m sure you’re wondering - yes there are some twists (two, three if you’re feeling generous) and I felt they were well-executed, plausible, and helpful to the story. I’d say the first is the biggest and most effective, and I actually wrote “OH SHIT GOOD TWIST” in my notes.
It amuses me to no end that Elijah’s mom has an iMac computer circa 2003.
Even if you haven’t seen the other films in the trilogy, Glass is worthy of your time as it forces us to reflect on the myths that shape our society and the myths we make our own selves out of. Strong performances from magnetic leads create enough tension to sustain what could be a simple Celebrity Death Match fight into a larger rumination on who gets to become something more than they think they could be, and who might be trying to stop them.

" When they take you before synagogues and before rulers and authorities, do not worry about how or what your defense will be or about what you are to say. For the Holy Spirit will teach you at that moment what you should say.” (Luke 12: 11 - 12).
Saturday 16th October 2021 in the 28th Week in Ordinary Time is the feast of St Margaret Mary Alacoque (1647 - 1690). St Margaret is the French Visitation Nun that brought the world the private revelations of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Devotees of the Sacred Heart of Jesus owe St Margaret Mary eternal gratitude for her great work.
Today is also the feast of St Hedwig (1173 - 1243). Wife of the Duke of Poland and mother of 7 children. After the death of her husband, Hedwig took the habit of a Nun and lived the rest of her life in a Cistercian monastery that she and her late husband had founded.
I have always loved the key Scripture for today. "When they take you before synagogues and before rulers and authorities, do not worry about how or what your defense will be or about what you are to say. For the Holy Spirit will teach you at that moment what you should say.”
Do you believe this to be true? Yes. I believe it to be true because I have experienced the truth several times. The Lord has been by my side and given me wisdom words to say when I was in most need of such counsels. I have been full of amazement and have never forgotten the experience.
St Margaret Mary, our Saint for today is full of confidence in the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Abraham and David taught us that trust and confidence in God cause God to make us righteous. We are not justified by our works.
"Allow Me to speak words of peace to your soul. Trust Me in all things. Trust that I will not abandon you, nor will I deprive you of My friendship. My desire is to hold conversation with you, to speak to you, as I have often said, heart to heart, as a man converses with his best friend. Why do you doubt? Believe in My friendship for you. It is My gift to you, and I will not withdraw what I have given you out of the love of My Heart." (IN SINU JESU, Thursday, October 17, 2008 Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque."

wait can u talk more about key's taste in media pls
ok ok so!
now, this might take a while, and it's late, so i don't know when you're gonna see this???
as i said in the tags of my post, over the years, key has been very loud about the media he consumes.
more often than not, that media is either, very lgbt+ or, lgbt+ associated.
(disclaimer! not to say that he doesn't also like media not geared towards the lgbt+ too, this is just me highlighting when he does because i find it interesting, and relatable!)
let's start with the well-known stuff.
music~
key's gaga phase!
now, kibum was very much into gaga around her 'born this way' era and, i don't think i need to spell out the associations with the lgbt+ that this has. it's pretty cut & dry.
if you look at key's performance of 'hair' by gaga for example.....ooooof.
the lyrics to this song???
he. is. YELLING.
next up, his kesha phase
not much to say other than, like gaga, kesha is an artist very much associated with the lgbt community. especially at the time that key was into her music (yes she was a popular & fun artist to cover at the time, but, knowing kibum.....)
and the way Key so confidently belted out 'boys tryna touch my junk'? mmhmm.
next, mikaaa!
key loves mika. we know this.
he not only has he covered his music but, he went to his concert, and met him irl!
for those who don't know, mika is entrenched in the community, and is lgbt+ himself. he's literally a gay icon.
also, key has been into, beyonce & rihanna over the years, but these artists mentioned are the most prominent in his taste.
key spoke about beyonce in a 2012 interview with dazed & confused magazine though!
"Q: I’m curious to know what else than vintage interests you these days. What is it if there’s anything that shocked you like hammering your head?
Key: Beyonce’s music video for ‘Best Thing I Never Had’ in which she has a wedding in lingerie. Why is she so pretty? It made me almost angry because she is so pretty.
Q: You were angry?
Key: Watching it, I said, “How come? How can she be so in such a situation?” I get angry when someone else beats me to it when I’m thinking of doing what I want to try.
Q: You don’t mean trying lingerie?
Key: Ah, no, not that one. With Beyonce, we have this powerful image of her. It’s amazing to see that people like the calm music video the singer with such an image made for her quiet song as much as her energetic performances on stage. It means she gives off the same amount of energy in performing calm songs. I’d like to be like that. Supposing people are 100 % satisfied when you dance, I think they are 80% satisfied with slow songs. I was wondering how to reduce the difference, but Beyonce did it! If she doesn’t care and doesn’t feel shy in lingerie, it is nothing to be ashamed of. Who would have imagined her doing a wedding in lingerie for such a slow song?"
key & david bowie
another queer icon that key has been very vocal about liking.
he's wore a bowie t shirt, and posted about him on insta.
can't add any more images, but, here's a link to a post i made
https://gaykey.tumblr.com/post/641280895625691136/radiatingdyke-yes-thank-you-amber-also-it
key + troye sivan
2022 update, but key + conan grey! he's a huge fan of conan's music and even met him, gave a tour of the sme building, and completely fanboyed the entire time
also, a small thing but
key wearing a freddie mercury badge
next
movies/tv shows/stage stuff/art/culture ect.
so
hedwig and the angry inch
key is a big fan of the musical, and i assume the film?
hedwig and the angry inch is a lgbt+ musical/film about a transfemme character called hedwig, and her search for stardom.
a queer culture piece of media.
he referenced a character from the story in his ultra slutty insta post
also, he met the cast of the musical!
also, shout out to kibum stan, olly, sjjvjfjdndndjnssj
(olly and years & years could also be put on this list!)
art & artists
jean-michel basquiat & keith haring
both artists kibum has mentioned, or referenced in the past
both overtly lgbt+ or suspected to be (jean-michel never publicly identified as bisexual, but, was known to be attracted to multiple genders, and someone very much considered/associated with, part of the culture)
kibum with a keith haring phone case & tee shirt
kibum at a jean-michel exhibit a few weeks ago.
sooooo, there we go!
this is just the tip of the iceberg btw.
there's tons more, but, it's late, and i'd have to troll through tons of his insta posts lol, but you get where i'm going with this
kibum has always has, and always will be, outspoken and true to himself
about who he is, what he likes and dislikes,
and it's a huge part of why i adore him so much.
#this doesn't even go into the fashion brands he wears and likes#like this requires an essay honestly#and i feel like i'm forgetting big stufff!#shinee#key#amber asks#key + media#keep#keystory

If you’ve been watching The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story like I told you to, then you’ve heard of David Madson, the young architect who Andrew Cunanan considered the love of his life. While you’ll learn more about Madson in forthcoming episodes, it’s time to meet the Australian actor who plays him — Cody Fern, who is the Tracking Board’s Up-and-Comer of the Month this January.
Fern goes toe-to-toe with Darren Criss in Versace, and he has big things brewing in Hollywood. The rising star hails from a small town in Western Australia, where he grew up as the first person in his family to attend university. Despite his modest upbringing in a remote part of the country where few people forge careers in the arts, Fern went on to play the lead onstage in Romeo and Juliet, and he also starred in the National Theatre’s acclaimed production of War Horse.
Fern won Australia in Film’s Heath Ledger Scholarship in 2014, but his breakout feature role didn’t come until last year’s The Tribes of Palos Verdes, which unfortunately got caught up in Relativity’s bankruptcy and fell victim to the company’s downfall. Still, Fern didn’t let that setback hold him back, as he also starred in the award-winning short film The Last Time I Saw Richard, and helped director Bart Layton workshop his latest Sundance hit American Animals at the Sundance Director’s Lab.
When we spoke in mid-January, Fern had only seen one episode of Versace, but he had started getting positive feedback from journalists. He’ll watch American Crime Story unfold in tandem with audiences, who should pay attention to his impressive performance. Our chat runs the gamut and includes Fern’s take on why Andrew Cunanan killed Gianni Versace, so enjoy!
What sparked your passion for acting and made you decide to get into this crazy business? That’s a long story, but I’ll give you the truncated version. I’m one of those people who has known ever since I had conscious thought. I grew up in a very, very, very small town in Western Australia called Southern Cross. It’s about seven hours outside Perth by train, and there was a population of just under 300, so the arts were never really something that [I considered] possible. I’d never been exposed to theater, and I didn’t see my first play until I was 22. I’d always known that I wanted to do it, but I kind of veered off into studying business. I did a degree in commerce, and then I segued into psychology. I thought for a time that I was going to be a therapist, and that could kind of numb, to a certain extent, my desire to be an actor, but I couldn’t get away from it. It continued to pursue me. So I kind of threw it all away at 24, just before my 25th birthday, so like, five years ago, now. I joined “the circus,” and here we are.
But I think my passion for it came from… it’s strange, because everyone talks about acting and everyone has their own philosophies on that, but I think for me personally, what I love about film, and what I love about plays, in particular, is getting to see stories that haven’t been told, and angles on stories through the lens of people who may not be as glamorous as most. That’s what really attracted me to it. I used to watch a lot of daytime films, and I used to sneak into arthouse theaters and watch French films, so I kind of fell in love with acting as a form of storytelling. Not just “once upon a time there was this,” but more cut from a deeply psychological level. It just gelled with who I am and what I do and the experiences that I’ve had.
Tell me about the audition process for American Crime Story and how Ryan Murphy discovered you for this role. That’s an interesting one as well. I was in London at the time, because I’m developing a feature film. I was working with my producers Nancy Grant and Xavier Dolan, and I’d kind of been a little exasperated in LA because I was pursuing very detailed and character-driven stories that were particularly high-end, and I kind of refused as an actor to pursue anything that was kind of boy next door or one-dimensional. I’d been in theater before so I had the opportunity to explore intense stories and characters, and a range of different roles. And when I initially moved to Los Angeles, I was kind of exasperated by the stories being told. I going in for a lot of 16-year-olds. So with this audition, when American Crime Story came through, I kind of took it as an opportunity for a last hurrah before I went off and directed my feature film. It was a strange time because I was kind of mourning the acting that I wasn’t able to do at the same time as investing my creativity into writing and directing and acting in my own feature.
So I kind of just gave it my all in the audition. It was kind of like a send-off, like a little goodbye, and then a week later I got a callback. I think I was positive that the role was going to go to somebody in the Ryan Murphy canon, I just never assumed that it was going to be me. And then I met with the writer, Tom Rob Smith, who’s incredible, and the amazing producer Brad Simpson, and we had the callback from there. Ryan was kind of instantly like, “it’s Cody,” and three weeks later I was filming. It’s such intense material, so it was just a real opportunity to dive in. But from his end, I’m not so sure how he came across me. It was a wide casting call, and they were just looking for the right person. I’m just grateful that it was me.
Did you have to read with Darren Criss and Finn Wittrock to see if you guys meshed well together onscreen? Actually, no, I didn’t read with them. When I first worked with Darren, we were kind of thrown into Jeff’s death. The murder of Jeff Trail, in the apartment. That was the first day of shooting. I hadn’t met Darren before. I’d seen him in Hedwig and the Angry Inch and thought he was brilliant in it, but we didn’t meet each other, no. I think Ryan decided based on the strength of the audition and then went from there, and Finn had already been cast. It was kind of a rolling freight train It just went. That was a particularly intense day of shooting.
Let’s talk about the actual show. Do you think that Andrew truly loved David, and if so, why didn’t David love him back? Can you talk about their relationship as far as you saw it? I did some extensive research and obviously read Maureen’s book, and it’s such a fine piece of investigative journalism. She spoke to the friends and family members of David Madson, and I think their relationship is an anomaly in the life of David Madson, because David was a very kind, very generous, very vanilla guy, by all accounts. He was kind of very boisterous and happy and loving, but at the same time he came from an intensely religious background, so I think the collision into Andrew is an interesting one. I think that they did love each other at one point in time, but David ultimately broke it off with Andrew, because of exactly what plays out in the series. There was a sense of dishonesty that he felt coming from Andrew, and the fact that he was hiding something. He even had communicated to friends that he was afraid of Andrew at one point in time.
I think that it’s very clear that Andrew loved David, but I think for David, and I think what the series explores as well, is that Andrew loved the idea of David. He loved the idea of this wholesome man who had a life and who was comfortable and who could give him a sense of stability and real generosity. But I think that David didn’t get honesty from Andrew and that was something that was really difficult for him. Andrew was someone who struggled with the truth. In many accounts, Andrew had spoken to friends of David’s, especially when he was going out to see David and Jeff, and referred back to the fact that David is the love of his life, and he told many of his friends that. The proposal to David was a particular shock, I think.
What the series explores which is really interesting is this love gone wrong, and the story between David and Andrew in the series is really a love story. It’s about missed connections and missed opportunities, and I think it leaves it up to the audience to decide whether or not it comes down to Andrew’s psychopathic tendencies or his inability to face the truth. It’s an interesting relationship, it’s very rich with complication, but by all accounts, yes, David as the love of Andrew’s life, it’s just that David felt the need for something more truthful.
And now for The Big Question: Why do you think Cunanan killed Versace? From my perception, which I think is very much in line with Ryan’s, Andrew was a man who really craved attention, who really craved validation and craved to be magnificent in the eyes of others, so much so that he would go to extreme lengths to be somewhat famous. Versace was somebody who represented everything that Andrew wasn’t. He was somebody who was willing to work, and very hard, for what he believed in, and what he was passionate about, whereas Andrew kind of lived off the backs of others. He used and manipulated all these men to get his way. I think Versace took his level of genius and gave it back to the world, whereas Andrew always felt that the world owed him something.
So I think that the death of Versace, and the time that Versace was going through during that period, really synced up with Andrew in terms of Andrew’s downfall and Versace’s rise. Versace certainly was a truth-teller at that point in time, one of the most revolutionary truth-tellers, and when he came out in The Advocate magazine it was a huge deal. Andrew, although out in some circles, initially lived a very closeted life, and he told people what they needed to hear. So I think Versace’s level of truth threatened Andrew’s, and I think that Andrew was ultimately tipped over the edge and owed something that Versace had, and so he felt the need to take it, or at least to take it down.
What has been the biggest pinch-me moment of your career so far? Ever since moving to LA, it’s been like that. I’ve gotten to work with extraordinary people. But I think for sure the biggest pinch-me moment was working with Ryan Murphy. Much is said about Ryan Murphy as a genius and not enough is said about how kind and generous he is, both as a creative and as a human being. The day I found out that I got this I was screaming. I was on the phone with my agent and managers and we were just going wild. I’ve followed Ryan’s work for so long and I’ve loved his work for so long. And I said when I moved to LA, I was hesitant about doing TV at that time because I didn’t want to be locked into a long contract, and so I said if I’m going to do TV, I want to work with Ryan Murphy, and so for that to come true… they say, never meet your idols because they’ll destroy your idea of them, but that’s not true with Ryan. He’s so kind and he’s so generous and he’s so giving and he’s so bloody brilliant, you know. It really, truly has been the biggest pinch-me moment to be involved in his world and his universe, the Ryan Murphy multiverse, is breathtaking. I’m still in shock.
Are there any actors who you admire, or whose careers you’d like to emulate? I’d have to say Cillian Murphy. I think he’s one of the most extraordinary actors that we have today. The Wind That Shakes the Barley, and more recently, Peaky Blinders. He’s a powerhouse performer, and I really admire the way he lives his personal life. He’s really about the work. You know who has been on my mind recently? Richard Jenkins, from The Shape of Water. I think he’s such a phenomenal actor. He’s always put in this category of being a character actor, and he’s so phenomenal and specific and precise in the choices that he makes, so I love following his work as well. And there are so many extraordinary actresses, like Cate Blanchett and Meryl Streep and Tilda Swinton and what Michelle Williams is doing at the moment. I love actors who are very specific in their work, who are very emotionally connected, and who are unafraid to take risks with either their physical appearances or the roles that they choose.
You wrote and directed a short called Pisces, and I know you mentioned that you were prepping a feature. Are you focused on acting right now, or are you looking to press forward with those directing ambitions? I don’t think that they’re mutually exclusive. I think that they can run in tandem. Writing and directing certainly takes up a lot of my time, but at the heart of it all, I’m an actor. It is what I love doing the most. I love acting. I love being able to tell stories in that manner, and so I’m very much pursuing acting. I just think that what’s interesting about writing and directing, the power is in your hands. As an actor you’re quite often waiting by the phone waiting and hoping that somebody else, to a certain extent, chooses you, and it’s very difficult, therefore, to continue to keep up your craft, unless you’re in class or doing self-tapes or whatever it happens to be. So I love writing when I have downtime from acting. As with all thing, the cards will fall where they fall, and I was very much going down the line of directing my feature and now I’ve been swept up into acting again, which I’m extraordinarily acting for. I’ll continue to write, definitely, and directing is on the horizon, but for now I’m totally focused on acting. I will say this as well… I think that they all influence and inform each other. If you write and you’re going through the process of rewriting and getting notes and specifying, you start to understand, really understand, what a good script is and what a bad script is and what good writing looks like. You can appreciate what people go through and it helps you as an actor, so I think they all inform each other.
I know you have social media accounts, but you’re not very active on social media. Is there a reason for that, or do you just prefer to be a little bit more private and guarded with fans? I just recently got an Instagram because I certainly don’t want to ignore or turn away from any people who want to engage with the work or have something to say about it, but I’m not a social media person and I never have been. It’s not about being private or being secretive, it’s just a personal choice. I think it consumes so much of people’s lives, and I know that the industry is certainly going a different way, especially with actors, whereby the more fans you have and the greater reach you have, people think that it’ll lead to more work, and it may. But the type of work that comes from me having one million more Instagram followers than somebody else is not the kind of work that I ultimately want to be doing. I just find that I really like personal interactions and stimulating conversations, and I think that while social media can be a great way to stay connected, it’s also a really disconnected version of reality. You’re constantly curating your life for others, and what your life is, and it lends itself to the seeking of opinions and comments, and I think that can be dangerous for some people. It certainly is for me. It’s very depleting for me, because it raises my level of anxiety too high. It’s too tied to validation. And that’s not true of everybody. And I’m not saying anything against social media, I’m just saying something against social media for myself. So we’ll see what happens with the old Instagram. I like being able to post photos and offer my perspective of the world, but I’m not so keen on posting photos of myself. I find being behind a film camera very easy and intimate, and I find being behind a still camera very alarming and anxiety-inducing. I think I enjoy the veil of a character.
Do you have a dream role? Is there a part you’re dying to play? There are so many. There’s such an intricate tapestry of roles out there. I love really complex, three-dimensional roles, and people who are flawed. I think that’s what I loved about David. In this series, we’re examining a victim, but we’re also examining somebody who is examining his own level of complicity in a tragic event. He’s asking himself questions about shame and hiding and repression, and he’s not a device in any way. I’d would really love to sink my teeth into playing Marilyn Manson. He’s such an intelligent and thoughtful and interesting social provoker. I remember when I was younger, watching him on the rise, and no matter what people think about his music, he’s a great conduit for conversation, and he really engages with people on taboo issues. I love that about him, and I think his personal life is super interesting, in how he chooses to represent himself and engage with the world. Look, I love his music. For me, as a teenager, he represented such an era of rebellion and refusal and rage. I love all of that. I think it’s something that’s ingrained in me, especially as a teenager, and he was able to really reach into that and expose it.
What’s next for you? I’m actually not allowed to say. I have a couple of big announcements to follow, but I’ll get in trouble. I’m sure you’ll be hearing very soon. I’m just super thrilled to watch Versace with everybody. This is all so new to me, in terms of this moment in time. People haven’t been exposed to my work very heavily yet, especially the public, so I’m really excited about that. I’m just thrilled to see what the response is going to be.
