Tumblr media
→ this was requested by @actyourownfandom-23 I loved this idea, and it turned to be quite longer than I expected it to. I really liked this piece so let me know what your thoughts are. Hope you like it, love, I did my best 💕
━━━━━━━━ ⸙ ━━━━━━━━
“Are you ready for the game tonight?” Percy’s tone was incisive, thoughtful. You could see in his face that he, didn’t seem ready at all.
You understood his nervousness. This would be both of your first times in a game of capture the flag. First time carrying around swords, shields and fighting other students instead of answering a task in class. It had been almost a week ever since you and Percy had arrived at Camp Half Blood. Since Grover had revealed himself to be a satyr and his mother and your adoptive mother, Sally, had died.
You still perfectly picture the look in Quiron's face when he explained to the both of you (already having revealed himself as a centaur) that Sally had for accident or not, decided to adopt a demigod, that being you. It was obvious that he did not believe at all that it had been a coincidence. What were the changes? In his mind, whomever was Percy’s father had known about you and after unknown events, had asked Sally to take care of you. Perhaps he could even be your father, but from another relationship. You wished it wasn’t true, that he hadn’t ask Sally Jackson to raise the child of another woman with the man she loved. You really hoped he didn’t. Or, you could have a mother. You never knew any family expect Sally and Percy. So, yeah, it could be pretty much anyone.
After all those days, exactly nothing had changed since your arrival. You both still felt like outsiders, sleeping in Hermes's Cabin and trying to get used to the Camp’s activities while not being claimed for any of the Gods. Luckily for the both of you, you guys had Grover and Luke to look after you.
Luke. The thought of him made you sight as you suddenly remembered to nod your head in answer to Percy’s question. The son of Hermes had been nothing but attentive and a friend ever since Quiron had asked him to help you both get settled. He had given you both a place to sleep, invited you to sit by his side at dinner and even helped you both to train a bit, to get ready for the game. He was a nice person and you did not fail to notice, that he was also beautiful.
“Good for you” Percy said, elbows on his knees as you both sat together in the grass close to the strawberry fields. “I feel like my head in going to blow up every time I think about someone attacking me with a sword”
“Think about the bright side of this, Percy” you turned your head to him and raised your eyebrows as you smiled. “There is no permission to kill”
“Oh, thanks, (Y/N), that’s incredibly comforting” Percy rolled his eyes at you as you laughed hard because of the annoyed expression on his face.
“It should be” the sound of that voice made both you and Percy turn to look at behind you both, from where Luke came. You thought that he looked beautiful as usual, with his bright hair and that curious scar running along his features. It wasn’t ugly at all, it made him Luke even more interesting. “It makes a great difference, to know that the sons of Ares are forbidden to kill you”
“See? I told you” you said to Percy and for a brief moment, he seemed calmer. Then you turned to Luke, eyes meeting in a way that almost took your breath away. His eyes were intense, filled with life. There was something in them… so attractive. “We will fight with you, right?”
“Of course, darling” Luke smiled, in that mischievous way you had noticed that all the sons of Hermes’s had. “Thought I would not protect you?”
“And who’s going to protect me?” Percy asked, frowning as he watched the exchange of glances between you both. He knew you better than anyone in the world. He was your brother. Maybe not in blood, but in absolutely everything else. You knew there would be just a short amount of time before he realized how you felt about Luke.
━━━━━━━━ ⸙ ━━━━━━━━
Whomever was your divine mother or father, you cursed them in that moment. They had abandoned you and apparently, left you with a scent that would attract monsters towards you every time they were near. Amazing. And as if that wasn’t enough, because of that scent you had to drop high school and live in that violent Camp of demigods and learn how to fight for your life. Super cool, right? Wrong.
Within fifteen minutes into the game of capture the flag you had lost sight of Percy and Luke, after a vicious attack of some of the son’s of Ares. Two of them had attacked you at the same time, even though Luke screamed for them to give you a break because you were knew.
You had even managed to take a few right swings with your sword like Luke had thought you, but they were too good. One of them cut your leg deeply and you only managed to run away unstably because Percy suddenly burst on top of them, probably encouraged by your wound.
You had ran and ran, and ran. Only stopped when you could no longer hear the sounds of battle anywhere near you. With pain irradiating from your leg in sharp stings, you sat yourself down with your back against a big tree. Looking down, vision clouded because of the pain and the darkness of the night, you managed to see that your jeans had been torn apart and your leg was exposed. Blood ran down it, in an amount that you thought that for certain meant something really not good.
You tried to get up, but quickly realized you couldn’t because as soon as you put pressure on that leg, you lost balance and fell right back with your back hitting the tree and making you gasp in pain. You could feel yourself getting weaker and weaker, as blood continued to leave the wound. Taking a deep breath, you tore a piece of your shirt apart and wrapped it around the wound, trying to stop the blood flow. It held, surprisingly.
You just stayed there, trying to normalize your breathing and remain calm even though you failed at it.
“(Y/N)!” you heard your name being called out of the sudden, echoing through the woods of the Camp. “(Y/N)!”
“I-I’m here!” you said as loud as you could, eyes closed and head laid back into the tree for saving energy. Honestly, you didn’t even if they, whomever that was, had heard you until footsteps approached you in a rush.
“Hi, darling” you recognized his voice in the same instant and opened your eyes. Luke. He smiled at you, probably trying to give you some comfort as he lowered himself inti the grass to be right in front of you. He inspected your face, hand going up to caress your cheek before his eyes went down towards your leg and he saw the poor bandage you had made. It made him smile even brighter. “Good call, love” the pet names would have made you blush you weren’t so weak.
“Percy” you mumbled, worried about him as Luke raised you in his arms, one hand below your legs and the other supporting your back, like you weighted nothing at all.
“He is fine, don’t worry. I left him with two of my sisters. They’re good fighters, so he’ll be safe. Now, let’s get you to the infirmary. You have to be taken care of”
With the slow swing of your body being carried by his as he walked, you felt good. In Luke’s arms, all thoughts escaped your mind and you blacked out.
━━━━━━━━ ⸙ ━━━━━━━━
“How are you feeling?” Percy squeezed your hand in his. You had just awakened and found him sitting by your bed, smiling tenderly. He looked fine, certainly not hurt like you and it relieved you Although, there was something else behind his smile. Something you failed to identify as displeasure or satisfaction. From the corner of your eye, you could the sunlight coming into the infirmary and indicating that it was already morning.
“I could be better” you shrugged a bit and pulled yourself up just enough to sit on the bed. You frowned at him. “What is it you’re not telling me?”
“I got claimed last night, close to the end of the game” he said, and the tone on his voice still not helped you understand how he felt about that. “My father is Poseidon”
“Percy, that’s incredible!” you said, trying to encourage him to be happy. You knew what was going on his mind. Why did you abandon me and mom? Why did you not stay or showed up to tell me this yourself? “I am happy for you. I really am”
“I have to go, Quiron made promise I would let him know when you woke up. I’ll come back later, ok?” you nodded and then he leaned down to kiss your forehead. “Love you, sister” he winked playfully and then walked out of the infirmary.
“You’re right, you know. You could definitely be better” Luke approached your bed, coming from one of the corners of the room. He probably had been expecting Percy to leave to speak alone with you. Why, you had no idea, but you liked it. He sat at your bed like Percy had before, close enough for you to be able to that he had a purple mark on his cheek that you were pretty sure wasn’t there before you blacked out.
“What happened to your face?” you raised your hand and touched it with your fingertips gently. He got your hand in his, taking it away from the mark.
“Let’s just say those sons of Ares got what they deserved” he said, expression incredibly calm, like he hadn’t just admitted to get into a fight because of you.
“Luke, you shouldn’t have!” you told him, even though you could feel your body a little bit warmer by the thought of him defending you like that.
“Of course I did, those idiots shouldn’t have attacked you. They have been training for three years already and you have for just a week. Was unfair, even Quiron said so” he squeezed your hand in his and sighted heavily, eyes going to the floor for a moment. “They only did it because of what you mean to me”
“W-what?” you couldn’t help but stutter. What had he meant with that?
“Did Percy tell you he got claimed?” Luke asked, completely changing the subject. You thought about insisting, but after having being saved by him, you came to the conclusion that give him some space was more than fair.
“I’m happy for him” you said, honestly. “But now… I feel like I’m the only outsider here”
“Your mother or father will claim you soon” he squeezed your hand again, making you look him in the eye. “Trust me, don’t worry about it” you nodded, smiling. You knew he was just trying to comfort but still, it felt good. “And also, as long as you don’t get claimed, you’ll be able to sleep close to me in my father’s cabin. Isn’t that great?”
You laughed at that, and he also did. Looking into Luke’s eyes in that moment, you realized that after last night, your feelings had just gotten greater and stronger. You liked Luke, really did.
And for whatever reason, the sons of Ares thought that Luke liked you too.

Ok I’m not sure how far you’ve gotten in mystic messenger but,,,, how would the RFA (and V and Saeran if you wouldn’t mind) respond to mc randomly asking them: if you got stabbed, (and lived to tell the tale) would you keep the knife? 0_0
HC: If you got stabbed, would you keep the knife? [RFA + V & Saeran]
A/N: I felt a bit inspired while writing this so maybe it wasn’t what you expected, but I really hope you like it! If someone wants this hc for obey me, mlqc or mha, let me know and I’ll gladly do so!
Warnings: Minor spoilers for Seven and Jihyun’s.
Yoosung
“W-What kind of question is that, Y/N?!”
“I’m just curious. Because I think maybe I would keep it…”
“Well, it would be pretty scary, don’t you think?” He asks rubbing the back of his neck nervously. “I would be so scared; I wouldn’t want to remember something like that…”
“But it would be so exciting!” You replied laughing.
He stood serious for a moment looking away from you.
When you were about to ask what was wrong, he said:
“If I got stabbed to defend you, maybe I would keep it… Because it’d remind me that I’m strong enough to protect you, and that that I shouldn’t be scared when it comes to do anything for you…”
He gazed at you ashamed, his blush covered completely his face and his golden hair stood out in contrast.
You pouted moved by his words and jumped over to embrace him tightly.
Even though your boyfriend seemed to be a shy a coward person, he actually was very brave and fearless when it came to protect others.
“Ohhh, Yoosung, baby!” You filled his face with small kisses while smiling. “I love you!”
“I l-love you too… And, Y/N…?” He asked hiding his face under your chin.
“Yes, baby?”
“I’ll always protect you, you know that, right?”
“Of course, I know it. Thank you, you’re the bravest person I know.”
Zen
“Hey, Zenny, if you ever got stabbed, would you keep the knife?”
You asked him while you two were watching a horror movie, cuddling on the sofa.
Without taking his eyes away from the T.V., he said jokingly:
“Why, honey? Do you want to stab me?”
You pushed him laughing and then with a more serious face asked again.
He now was looking at you, thinking thoroughly about it before answering.
“Mmm, I don’t think so. It would give me chills if I ever had to remember something as scary. It would bring bad luck to our home!”
You nodded lightly and after another question appeared in your mind, you asked:
“And if I was the one getting stabbed, would that be different for you?”
He froze for a brief moment but then relaxed again. He placed his eyes back on the T.V. screen.
“No, it wouldn’t. Bad memories like that will never be forgotten, but, Honey…” He now looked directly at your eyes, and with determination he continued:
“I want you to only remember the good things. I would want protect you from remembering something hurtful, because you’re an angel to me, who deserves only happiness in her life.”
You didn’t move an inch, and instead kept looking at his eyes. Your heart full with love was pounding like crazy.
He raised his left hand and slowly caressed your cheek. With hints of a smile he spoke again, slowly.
“Please keep only the good memories, honey.” He smiled and leaned to kiss you lightly.
Jaehee
“I think it wouldn’t be possible, Y/N. If I got stabbed, the knife would now be evidence for the police.”
“Well, let’s pretend they didn’t need it, would you keep it or throw it away?”
“I’m not sure. There wouldn’t be a need for me to keep it, but it’d be a waste to throw it away.” She had a serious look on her face while thinking about your question.
“Wouldn’t you be scared about it?” You asked surprised of her coldness about the matter.
“Why would I be scared about it? Is the person behind the knife that’d hurt me. The knife itself is harmless.” She tilts her head to the side, slightly confused about your question.
“Mmm, you’re right, but wouldn’t it bring you scary memories?”
“Maybe, if it were an extremely traumatic experience. But if we’re talking about a simple theft that went wrong, maybe that memory would hold something for me to learn about.” Jaehee continued what she was previously doing, without paying much attention to her words.
“What do you mean?” You asked for a further explanation from her.
“Experiences like that always teach us something, or they make us stronger. I don’t mind going through something scary if it means I’ll become more mature and stronger after that.”
“Why?”
Jaehee paused her tasks and stared back at you.
“Because that means I’ll be a better person, someone worthy to protect you, Y/N.”
Unlike the other guys, Jaehee didn’t stop to have a cheesy moment with you. But her words were honest enough to let you know how much she cared about you, making you smile and mutter a small:
“Thank you, Jaehee.”
Jumin
“I would keep it, obviously. Just to file a complaint with the police. The weapon is an important clue to any case, I would make sure to run fingerprints test before doing so, of course, to have my own investigation.”
“Ok, ok, honey. But I’m asking if you would keep it to yourself.” You interrupted your husband, before he kept blabbering.
“Keep the weapon just because I want?” He raised an eye brow at you, perplexed. “No, it’s dangerous to have something like that in the house, Elizabeth the 3rd could hurt her little paws if she tried to play with it.”
“What if you kept it in a safe place?” You rolled your eyes, from your husband’s response.
“It’d still be dangerous. And not to mention if I ever got stabbed, I would make sure you’d never be alone. What if they tried to get revenge by hurting you?” Jumin shook his head and crossed his arms in front of his chest.
“If someone stabbed me, I’d keep the knife.” You muttered without thinking too much.
“What are you talking about, Y/N? If you got stabbed, I’d make sure to destroy the knife without thinking it twice.” Jumin replied, anger emerging in his features from your answer.
“Eh? Why, honey?”
“If someone ever dares to hurt you, I’d want to destroy them and make them vanish completely from earth, so you’d never have to be afraid ever again.” He answered frowning. “Doesn’t matter if it’s people or just an object.”
“Whoa, that sounds scary, Jumin.” With wide open eyes, you stared at him surprised.
“Maybe I’m exaggerating a bit, but still.”
“The only thing I’d want is for you to be always safe.”
Seven
“Actually, I was stabbed once!”
“EH?! REALLY?!”
“Yeah, I was stabbed in the heart…” He sniffled and cleared fake tears from his face while pouting.
“WHAT?! How is that pos—?!”
“Stabbed in the heart by your beautiful looks, I almost died the first time I saw you, you know, Y/N?” He recovered his dorky tone and bright face holding back the laugh.
“AHHH! I’m gonna kill you, Seven!” You pushed him back, recovering from the mini heart attack you got after hearing his words.
“But I think it’s a bad idea to keep something like that! What if they put a chip on it to track you down?” He shook his head in disapproval.
“I don’t think it’s likely…” You laughed.
“If it’s a simple knife, maybe I’d keep it. I’d be fun to have a collection of all the things that almost killed me in the past!”
“Wait, how many times someone has tried to kill you, exactly…?” You weren’t sure if you’re boyfriend was serious, but knowing his past as a secret agent, it wouldn’t surprise you if it was true.
“A million times! And all of them I survived!” He said proudly, lifting his glasses with his middle finger.
“You’re scaring me, Seven… I don’t want anyone to hurt you ever again…”
You frowned and hugged his right arm tightly, burying your face in his clothes.
“Ohhh, Y/N, you don’t have to worry about it!” He reassured you calmly.
“As I said, I always survive. And now more than ever, I want to stay alive for a loooong time.”
You raised your head slowly to give a peek at him, not sure what he meant.
He turned his head around to look towards the photo framed on the wall.
A photo of the RFA sitting together on the couch, with Saeran and Yoosung at both your sides, and you embraced by your smiley boyfriend.
“I have so many things to fight for, now that I have you and Saeran with me.”
Saeran
“I’d definitely keep it.”
He didn’t hesitate for a single second before answering your random question.
“Well, that’s the answer I expected from you, but why?”
“It’s a free knife, why not?” He shrugged careless.
“A free knife…?” You laughed at his response.
“Yeah, and I’d probably use it to stab them back.”
“What? NO! You should never stab someone, Saeran! It doesn’t matter if they stabbed you first!” You hurriedly scolded him.
“I know, don’t worry, Y/N. I won’t stab anyone.” He rolled his eyes, as you didn’t notice the sarcasm in his voice.
“But yeah, I’d keep it. As a reminder that even if I met some good people like you or the RFA, there’s still bad people out there, like my father…”
You stayed in silence for some time, before replying to him:
“Instead of trying to remember the people who hurt you, why not better remember the people that love you?”
It was an innocent question you did, but it your words hit him hard.
He stood quiet for a minute, and then looked at you and smiled lightly.
Caressing carefully your head with his hand, he said:
“Yeah, you’re right. I should do that instead.”
V
“W-Why you ask that, Y/N?” He asks, taken aback by your sudden question.
“I saw people talking about it on the internet, and I was curious.”
“Well… If the person that stabbed me was someone important to me, I think I’d keep it.” He said with a low voice.
“Would it be important to you?”
“Yes, maybe they stabbed me because I hurt that person. The knife would remind me of my mistake.”
“Jihyun, your bad habit of blaming yourself is never gone, is it?”
He let out a light laugh, nodding in agreement with you.
“You’re right, I’m sorry.” He placed a kiss on your cheek.
“Baby, you’re the sweetest person I know, how could you hurt someone to the point they’d want to stab you?” You sighed.
The two of you locked eyes for a moment, remembering a certain blonde girl who made a lot of damage to your boyfriend.
“Umm, forget that.”
He laughed again, with innocence.
“Even if you hurt someone, I would help you recognize your mistake and make up for it. And I’d never let anyone hurt you.”
“You’ve spent most of your life trying to protect the people around you. Now it’s YOUR turn to be protected.” You assured him.
Jihyun just stayed silent digesting your words.
The old him, would feel bad to have you protect him and not the other way around, but now he wasn’t afraid of letting other people help him when needed.
And he loved you more than anything else, so of course he trusted your words.
“Thank you, Y/N. Let’s protect each other.”

Perfect Timing//Bill Denbrough x fem reader
Please be kind! This is only my second time publishing on tumblr, so I’m not really sure what I’m doing, but here we are!
Warnings: smut, brief mention of fem oral receiving, swearing, mild angst, underage drinking
Spring break came way too slowly, especially for Y/n. Freshman year of college is said to be one of the best years of your life, but it’s definitely the worst. Her high school was entirely too easy for her, probably because her teachers were just idiots. Then college hit, and the workload was unbearable. Not to mention, she grew homesick for her parents and her best friends and even a tiny bit for Bill.
Oh, how she hated Bill back home.
Well, okay, she didn’t hate him, it was more of just a mutual tension that sometimes led to the Losers separating them at all costs.
They went on a few dates freshman year, and even kissed once, but it all ended when popular Autumn asked Bill to “help her with English” at lunch one day. He completely forgot to tell Y/n, but didn’t think much of the whole affair anyway. When Y/n walked out of the lunch line, she smiled at her newly official boyfriend. He was hunched over a piece of paper, diligently writing with ginger hair falling into his eyes. When Autumn saw her coming over, she tapped Bill on the shoulder, and kissed him full on the mouth when he turned to her.
Y/n’s hands went slack, causing her tray to clatter to the ground. Tomato soup splattered all over her new white Keds. She obviously looked down to see the damage, and missed Bill pushing Autumn off of him. He went over to check on her and help her clean up, but she stormed off to the bathrooms.
From then on out, there’s been so much tension between them. Even though Bill explained what happened countless times, she’s absolutely refused to listen. She’s had trust issues after her biological father cheated on her mother when she was little, and this, well, this basically made them inflate like the economy. She wasn’t on speaking terms with him until the end of the school year, and even then their friendship was rocky.
But there was also a sexual tension. Bill and Y/n still had blatantly obvious feelings for each other, whether they wanted to admit or not. In fact, they even went to senior prom together, but it ended in disaster. There was a dramatic exit from Y/n when he mentioned how he was on good terms with Autumn now, and she was really sorry for what happened.
“Why the hell would you bring that up now?” Y/n rose from her seat.
“B-b-because she t-told me she w-wanted us to-”
“Can’t we just completely forget what happened back then? It was so long ago.”
Bill flushed. “Well, it r-r-really seems l-like you’ve n-n-never forgotten ab-about it these past th-three years.”
She threw her napkin on the table and left after saying, “You’re a dick.”
That night she vented to Eddie and ultimately admitted to having feelings for him, but he knew that all along anyway.
That night was the last time they talked until it was time for Bill to leave for NYU.
“Good luck,” she told him, bouncing on the balls of her feet nervously.
“Th-thank you, Y/n, y-you too!” he was so excited that day that he even pulled her into a hug, much to her surprise (and delight).
And now, here she is, on the plane to Palm Springs. It’s a long flight from Marywood, so Y/n uses her time to finish her homework. She’s majorly jetlagged by the time she lands at Palm Springs International. Luckily, the cab ride isn’t ridiculously long. When she gets to Richie’s beach house, he’s on the porch with his feet up and a daiquiri in hand.
“Y/N!!!!” he shouts, putting his drink to the side and running down the stairs.
“RICHIE!!!!” she yells back, dropping her bags to run and hug him.
“Oh, it’s been so long!”
“I know!! And holy shit, your house is gorgeous!”
“I’m telling you, Y/n, I lucked out so much by scoring that audition. Can you believe it? Rich Records Tozier, the nation’s youngest beloved DJ.”
“Hardly,” she chuckles. “So how is the life of fame treating you?”
“Oh, brilliant. Come on in, I’ll give you a tour,” he scoops up her bag and leads her to the door. It’s an incredible house, with a beautiful kitchen and even a movie theater.
“And here’s your room,” he gestures to the first door upstairs.
“May I?” she asks, hand on the doorknob.
“Be my guest.”
She swings it open to a redheaded girl on one of the two beds. She looks up from her magazine, smirking. “Hey, roomie!”
“Bev!” Y/n shrieks as her best friend runs to her and practically knocks her over.
“When did you get here?!”
“About an hour ago. Stan’s here too, but he’s taking a nap.”
“Well, we’ll have to fix that, won’t we?” Y/n grins mischievously.
“Everyone else is supposed to get here tomorrow morning, except for Mike. He’s coming tonight.”
“Oh, thank God. No Bill for a half day more.”
“Oh, Y/n, don’t be so close-minded,” Bev giggles and they sit down on the same bed, bursting with so much to catch up on. Richie doesn’t know if he should sit down with them or just go back to his daiquiri, but the doorbell rings.
“Saved by the bell,” he says, getting the side eye in response.
The girls talk for hours until they decide to say hello to Mike. Y/n stops at the bathroom first, and it takes her a while to find the kitchen after that. She has to follow the voices and Richie’s booming laugh.
“Sorry, I got lost,” she says, turning in the kitchen. “Hi, Mi-”
The third person talking to Richie and Beverly is not Mike.
It’s Bill. And she looks like a total bum in her old sundress and messy ponytail. She isn’t wearing a drop of makeup, either.
“Y/n.”
“Bill. Good to see you,” she holds out her hand professionally. He shakes it.
Is it good to see him? Looking at his cerulean eyes certainly sends butterflies through her stomach and through… other parts of her body.
“Y-you too.”
That immaculate stutter. She sits down at a barstool and crosses her legs together tightly. Richie and Beverly are quick to notice it, but restrain from commenting.
“I thought you were coming in tomorrow morning?”
She doesn’t sound rude or accusatory, just curious.
“M-my flight got c-c-cancelled.”
“Okay, gotcha.”
She drums her fingertips on the counter restlessly, not really knowing what else to say.
Luckily, Richie has a plan in case things get awkward between these two- and he’s already having to use it.
“Anyone want a drink?”
************************
“Nursing school is so insane. In anatomy, our teacher dissected a literal human body, and we had to examine it.”
“Eddie, please. We’re eating,” Y/n coughs.
“It was disgusting, but it was also fascinating,” he defends himself.
“Whatever floats your boat,” Ben shrugs.
“Y/n, tell us more about Marywood,” Eddie says, but she’s way too busy watching Bill talk to Richie’s cute next door neighbor while holding her little sister.
“You’re so good with her!” she simpers, tossing her shiny brown hair.
“Y/n? Earth to Y/n?”
“What?”
“How’s Marywood?”
“Oh, it’s… fine.”
“Just fine? Did you pick a major yet?”
She shakes her head.
“What about that guy? Are you still with him?”
“David? No, we were together for a while, but I guess the spark just kinda died. I mean, he initiated the breakup, but it was all mutual.”
Eddie squirts a dollop of sunscreen the size of a clementine in his hand. “That sucks. I’m sorry to hear that.”
“Don’t be,” Y/n shrugs, averting her gaze back to Bill. She’s very glad that she's wearing sunglasses, to hide her stares.
The cute girl was right, he is good with that little girl. Her heart would be melted, but Bill keeps flirting with the older sister. It’s disgusting.
And then, that girl has the audacity to drop the rattle she shook in the baby’s face. Y/n is close enough to hear the conversation, or at least read lips.
“Oh, l-l-l-let m-me get that.”
“Don’t worry, I got it,” she smiles, bending over so stealthily so that her breasts are all but out of that bikini.
“Ugh,” Y/n rolls her eyes.
“What’s up?” Ben asks.
“Nothing. I’m just going to go to the bathroom,” she stands up and walks almost catatonically to the door.
Instead of going to the bathroom, she finds a glass and slams it on the table.
“D-damn, Y/n. That’s n-n-not a napkin, you kn-know.”
She jumps at Bill’s voice. He obviously followed her in, and she’s not too thrilled about it.
“Funny,” she replies, searching the cabinets. “Do you want anything?”
“I-I was ac-actually getting d-drinks.”
“Oh, for you and your new girlfriend? Hey, let me know when the wedding is. That is, if I even get on the guest list.”
“What’s your p-p-problem?”
“I don’t have a problem.”
Y/n finds a bottle of straight vodka and pours it right in the glass.
“Hey, its eh-eh-eleven AM,” Bill warns her, reaching for the glass. Unfortunately, their hands grab for it at the same time and it goes crashing to the ground.
“Great, thanks,” she says.
“I didn’t w-want you to be w-w-wasted all d-day.”
“Listen, Bill,” she takes a deep breath. “I really appreciate your concern. I do. But it’s my life, and if I want to get wasted this early, then no one should stop me.”
He doesn’t answer. They both grab rags and start to clean up around their feet.
“Th-this kind of r-r-reminds me of a certain sit-situation involving t-tomato soup,” Bill risks saying.
It was a terrible idea.
“Are you kidding me? I thought we moved on from that!”
“Yeah, so w-w-we can j-joke about it now!”
She’s silent for a minute, a blend of wrath and sadness.
“Just,” Y/n says, “Just go back out with your girlfriend.”
“I-I-I h-hardly know- o-okay, what the hell is y-y-your problem? We’re n-not together an-anymore!!! You sh-sh-shouldn’t c-care about my l-l-love life.”
“You don’t get it, do you?” she stands up, vodka dripping from the rag to her toes. “I don’t care that I shouldn’t care. I do care! I’ve always cared!”
Bill is speechless, and she honestly doesn’t blame him. Y/n assumes he doesn’t feel the same about her. After all, they haven’t dated since freshman year. Sighing, she puts the rag in the sink and walks back outside.
She’s opening up her book and lying on her stomach to get a tan when Y/n hears an obnoxious “Excuse me?”
She looks up to the girl, who could literally be a bikini model. She looks at Y/n like she’s a piece of dirt, and Y/n just wants to smack her. She could never hurt anyone, though.
“Um, do you know when Bill will be back with the drinks?”
“Not a clue.”
******
Bill absolutely could not stop thinking of Y/n all day. He never really can, ever, but his thoughts have been out of control all damn day. They range from wild fantasies to regrets from way back when to just simply: She still likes me, she still likes me, she still likes me!!!!
He wants more than anything to talk to her and confess he’s been in love with her since high school, maybe even before that. But some small voice in Bill’s head tells him that even if she does have feelings, she won’t want to act on them. After all, he’s been nothing but an asshole to her.
Then again, so has she.
It’s really ironic that they’re so abrasive towards each other. Y/n is so kind and friendly to everyone she meets; that’s why Bill fell for her. And everyone tells him that he’s nothing but a sweetheart. And he’s always treated his every girlfriend like a princess.
But it’s Y/n he wants as a girlfriend, and it always has been.
Y/n comes running down the stairs, using the bansiters to prop herself up and skip the last couple steps. She’s been strangely lighthearted after she made that confession to Bill. It had been a weight on shoulders for the longest time, after all. And now that it’s out of the bag, she feels as if she can finally move on.
Holy shit, she’s so cute, Bill says to himself. She has this youthful energy, but the looks of a gorgeous young woman. Not to mention her outfit- a pastel yellow halter top, short jean shorts, and a sky blue scrunchie- looks magnificent.
“Okay, I’m ready to go!” she grins widely. “Sorry for the holdup!”
“You’re good,” Richie replies. “We were just figuring out transportation, considering I can only take five of us in my car.”
“I don’t mind taking the trunk,” Y/n shrugs. “Anyone else?”
“I will,” Beverly volunteers.
“Okay, great, and five of you can squish in the backseat. Mike claimed shotgun earlier.”
Everyone else groans while he flashes a smile and gives them finger guns.
“So charming,” Bev laughs and grabs Y/n’s hand. They run out to the car and squish in the trunk.
“Bev, I have to tell you something,” Y/n whispers.
“What?”
“I’m still not over Bill.”
“Thank you, Y/n,” she responds sarcastically.
“How did you know that? I only told Eddie!”
“It was just a little obvious,” she laughs. “And the good news is that we all think he feels the same way!”
“I don’t think he does, Bev,” Y/n shakes her head.
“What makes you say that?”
“Well, I told him today-”
“You what?”
“Shush!” she scolds as the boys get in the car. Luckily they’re all talking and can’t hear the girls if they whisper. “It just sort of... slipped out. But he didn’t even say anything. He just kind of… froze? It was so awkward.”
“You know he’s a little awkward around girls that he likes.”
“Is he, though?”
“Sure he is!”
“I don’t know, Bev. He stood there for a full thirty seconds without saying anything, and he just let me leave,” Y/n explains. “I think if he really liked me, he would have told me by now.”
Beverly gets quiet. “I’m so sorry, Y/n.”
“Hey, it’s okay! The timing was never right, and that- that happens. And it’s better I know now so I’m not hung up on him for the rest of my life.”
The rest of the drive is mostly just Beverly telling Y/n that there’s someone out there for her, and to keep her eyes open at the restaurant.
It’s a bright restaurant, very tropical and very flamboyant. A lush plant, obviously made of silicon, is the centerpiece of every table.
Good, it can hide me from Bill and spare my embarrassment, Y/n thinks as she sits opposite him. Unfortunately, Ben asks the hostess to take it away so he can see everyone. Y/n is mortified. Being directly across from her, he can watch and judge the girl the entire dinner.
She tries her hardest the whole meal not to pay Bill any mind, but it gets difficult when he starts getting tipsy. And drunk Bill can be wild. Singing and dancing on the tables wild. Luckily he isn’t at that point yet.
She doesn’t even know how he was able to buy drinks here; he’s only nineteen. The waitress must have a crush on him or something. Maybe she and Richie’s neighbor could start a Bill fanclub.
Y/n has a feeling the waitress would ask for her ID, though, so she sticks to soda. And three Shirley Temples is never good on anyone’s bladder.
“I’m going to the bathroom,” she announces. “Anyone else?”
Everyone shakes their heads. Everyone except…
“Me! M-m-me!” Bill waves his hand around like a hyper child.
“Great, I’m a babysitter now,” Y/n murmurs.
She starts walking to the bathroom, Bill hot on her heels. Surprisingly enough, when she finishes peeing, he’s actually waiting for her.
“F-f-finally. G-g-girls take so long in the buh-buh-bathroom.”
She ignores him.
“Y/nnnnn,” he slurs. “I’ve been m-m-meaning to t-t-tell you, your a-a-ass looks fantastic in th-those shorts.”
“Because that’s not a rude thing to say at all,” she replies, feeling her face burn up.
“I’m n-n-not trying to be r-rudeeee,” Bill grabs her waist and pulls her in. Y/n can smell all the alcohol on his breath, and it’s disgusting. He kisses her full on the mouth.
She shoves him off, embarrassed by his behavior. “You’re drunk.”
“If b-b-being drunk makes me w-w-want to m-make out with you, I-I-I never want t-to be so-sober.”
That hits Y/n hard. Bill Denbrough wants her. But only when he’s drunk.
He doesn’t love her in his right mind. This is all she has, and she can’t even fathom just taking advantage of him when he’s drunk. Using someone would hurt her in such an inexplicable way, and not to mention it would tear whatever small bond she had with Bill into shreds.
She plops back down in her seat, barely touching the rest of her food or speaking for the rest of the night.
When she gets to her shared room with Bev, Y/n takes a shower. She’s always loved showers because they’re a place where you can cry without risk of anyone hearing over the water running.
And that’s exactly what Y/n does. She lets the tears stream down her face, washed away by the showerhead’s water.
*******
Bill knows he got plastered last night, so it’s no surprise when he wakes up with a pounding headache. But he isn’t sure why Y/n is so quiet, especially around him. Usually she has a remark or at least a glare for him, but she seems almost meek today.
He pulls Beverly aside at one point, and asks if he did anything to her last night.
“I don’t know, Bill. You guys went to the bathroom at the same time, and when you came back, Y/n seemed really upset.”
“L-l-like angry, or s-sad?”
“Sad. But she didn’t tell me anything that happened. I’m sorry, Bill.”
“It’s o-o-okay. Th-Thanks, Bev.”
He spends the rest of the day trying to remember something- anything- from last night. Bathrooms. Bathrooms.
There are some vignettes. Y/n across from him, in that pretty top. Watching her ass as she walked to the bathrooms.
Oh, shit. Bill made some sort of comments about those shorts. What happened after that? He kissed her, didn’t he? But why would that make her sad?
When evening rolls around, Bill still doesn’t remember anything new. He’s the only one in the living room, not even paying attention to the TV. His friends come bounding down the stairs, all wearing sneakers and athletic outfits.
“A-a-are you g-guys going somewhere?”
“Yeah, to the new rope climbing place,” Stan replies.
“Where’s Y/n?”
“She has vertigo, and wanted to stay here. We thought you could stay here so she’s not alone all night.”
“You d-d-didn’t th-think about asking me f-first?”
“We drew names out of a hat,” Beverly steps in. “You just weren’t around when we did it.”
“Isn’t that a l-l-little ruh-rude to Y-Y/n? One of us is g-g-going to st-stay with her instead of h-having fun?”
“No, Bill, it was the opposite!” Richie tries to save the group, much to their chagrin. “We were voting on who didn’t get to stay home with Y/n. And you won! You get to!”
“Wh-what i-if I want to donate m-my win?”
“Doesn’t work like that. Wins are final.”
It’s all BS, and Bill knows it. There never was a hat draw, everyone knows that Bill and Y/n have a lot to work out, and they don’t want the two to go back from spring break with even more animosity for each other.
Also, they know that the two have feelings that have been expressed so wrongly over the years. Maybe now it’s time to work them out.
“So we’re going to head out now; have fun with Y/n!” Eddie waves, and they run out excitedly.
Bill sighs, not knowing what he’s going to do with Y/n all night. Maybe she’ll just be antisocial and hide in her room all night, but he personally hopes she won’t. He decides to hang out by the pool for a while, and changes into his swim trunks.
By the time he gets outside, though, Y/n is already there. She’s hugging her knees to her chest and watching the little waterfall intently.
“Hey,” Bill says, making her jump.
“Hey.”
“C-c-can I join you?”
She nods.
“Why aren’t you with the others?”
“B-because I w-w-won their ‘contest,’”
“Contest?” she shakes her head, not understanding.
“To b-b-babysit you, ap-apparently.”
“Ah. Sounds legitimate.”
He doesn’t know how to respond to that, so he just lets the sounds of the waterfall and the faint grasshoppers fill the silence. He’s sure Y/n doesn’t mind, though. When everyone else complained about the summer grasshoppers as kids, she would always dote on how they’re melodious and comforting.
Bill can’t hold himself back any longer.
“Y/n, what d-d-did I do l-last night?”
She turns to him. “You really don’t remember?”
“I re-remember making a com-comment, which I-I’m sorry about b-by the way, th-that was an a-asshole move. And I-I remember kissing y-you. But then what?”
Taking a deep breath, Y/n continues. “Well, then I pushed you off and told you that you were drunk.”
She pauses.
“And th-then?”
“Then you said, ‘If I want to make out with you when I’m drunk, then I don’t ever want to be sober.’”
That’s it? Bill thinks. He’s not stupid enough to voice his thoughts, luckily.
“Oh, Y-Y-Y/n, I w-w-was drunk. I d-didn’t know what I w-w-was saying.”
“Listen, Bill. I know you remember what I told you yesterday in the kitchen. And what you told me at the restaurant really hurt, okay?”
“Why? I-I wanted to k-k-kiss you,” he asks, genuinely confused.
“You’re such an idiot sometimes!” Y/n laughs incredulously. “You wanted to kiss me when you were drunk, not in your right mind!”
“I al-always want to k-k-kiss you in my right mind!”
“What?!”
“I-I think I love you, Y/n.”
She’s frozen. Could he actually mean that? Has he been drinking again? Hearing that from Bill Denbrough has been her dream since… forever.
“I think I love you too, Bill.”
He jumps up from his lounge chair, and leans over Y/n. He tucks a piece of hair behind her ear and kisses her tenderly, gently. Her lips are just as soft as he remembers them to be all those years ago, softer than any other girl he’s kissed.
“Wow,” she beams as they pull apart. “I guess I knew this, but you’re a much better kisser than my ex.”
He laughs. “W-why, thank you. You’re n-n-not so bad y-yourself.”
“Thanks,” she giggles. “I just… I can’t believe this is happening. I feel like doing something crazy now, something outrageous.”
“L-like what?”
“Hm…” she thinks for a minute. “Do you want to go skinny dipping?”
“Okay, sure,” Bill chuckles.
Grinning, she begins to peel off her one piece. She slips the straps off, and the rest slowly slides off her body. Her breasts are exposed first, then her stomach, then everything. Her skin is smooth and glorious.
Bill pulls off his swim trunks and throws them behind him. Y/n wants to tease him about his erection, but she’s way too shocked at his size.
They bask in the beauty of each other for a moment before they dive into the water, crisp and cool on their bare bodies. Y/n splashes Bill right in his face.
He pushes wet strands of hair from his ocean eyes. “H-how dare you?”
“What are you going to do about it?” she taunts.
“This,” Bill says, throwing Y/n over his shoulder and taking her outside the water. She’s both screaming and laughing her head off at this point. He carries her all the way to the deep end and tosses her in.
When she surfaces, Y/n makes sure to flip him off.
“So r-r-rude.”
He cannonballs in, and they swim around, and eventually go under the waterfall. They end up making out and gasping for air.
“D-d-do you want to tuh-take this inside?” Bill whispers.
She nods, and they get out. As Y/n shivers, Bill gets them fluffy towels from a bin by the chairs.
Grabbing his hand, she pulls him through the sliding glass doors. They run around the house in nothing but towels, giggling and kissing and dripping pool water everywhere. The two finally make it to Bill’s room and go directly to the bed (after locking the door).
“Spruh-spread your legs,” Bill breathes in her ear, sending goosebumps up and down her body.
She obeys and lets him kiss her knees, her thighs, and eventually her core. He pleases Y/n in a way her old boyfriend never did.
When she finishes, Bill holds her for a minute so she can catch her breath. Then, when he turns around to put on a condom, she moves against the wall.
“Oh, s-s-so you w-want wall sex n-now?” Bill raises his eyebrows.
“Maybe,” she shrugs. “If you’re comfortable with it.”
Instead of using words, Bill throws Y/n up against the wall and kisses her roughly. Their tongues clash, and she loves every second of it. Then he goes in. He starts slow at first, but begins to pick up the pace with her approval.
“D-damn, you’re so t-t-tight,” he whispers while she keeps muttering his name.
“Probably because I wasn’t with someone as big as you before.”
Hearing that makes him turn redder than his hair. “Really?”
“Really,” she sighs. “Can you go a little slower?”
He listens to her, and almost screams in pleasure when she starts to suck on his neck.
They both finish in a couple minutes, and are pretty burned out- Y/n especially because she’s never made such rough love before.
She lies in his arms, back on the bed, and traces the love mark forming on his neck.
“I think I love you,” Y/n says for the second time tonight.
“I-I th-think I love you t-too.”
They can’t help smiling for the umpteenth time in the past hour. Their stars had never aligned until now, and it couldn’t be a more perfect exchange of love. The wait was unbearable, but incredibly worth it.
Y/n and Bill make each other feel whole, like there was a sort of void within each other, unfilled until now.
“Hey,” Y/n’s voice is soft and gentle. “I’m so sorry about these past years. You know I have trust issues, but I took them too far and didn’t treat you right. And I’m so sorry.”
“I’m s-sorry, too. I’ve been an ass-asshole to y-y-you, a-and it’s m-m-my fault we broke uh-up in the f-first place.”
“Don’t say that,” Y/n frowns. “It was Evil Autumn’s fault.”
They chuckle.
Resting her head on Bill’s chest, Y/n asks the dreaded question.
“So what’s going to become of us? After spring break.”
Bill thinks for a minute, stroking her hair, and admits, “I don’t w-w-want us to c-c-cut each other off again.”
“Neither do I.”
“I think our sc-sc-schools are like t-t-two hours ap-apart; that’s n-not terrible.”
“It’s not,” Y/n agrees. “Maybe we could take turns driving every weekend, and find a halfway point or something.”
“A-an ex-exact halfway point,” Bill adds.
“An exact halfway point.”
They can make it work, they’ve got to. Both Bill and Y/n are extremely optimistic about the future ahead, now that every feeling has been sorted out between them. And even in the unfavorable event where things don’t work out, there will always be Palm Springs.
Bill presses a kiss to her forehead. There’s not a chance that they won’t make it. The timing is finally, after all these years, perfect.

Small Hours
Reader x Jeon Jungkook
Word Count: 1,438
Genre: Angst (w/ brief fluff)
Warning: Emotional cheating and some strong language
[A/N: I wanted to post a fic to hold you guys up until I’m finished with the requested ones. This story is actually inspired by a personal experience. While it definitely worked out at the end for my boyfriend and I, it was still one of the hardest things I had to go through. Also I might make a second part to this but we’ll see. Hope you guys enjoy!]
Tumblr media
You weren't surprised when you got a text from your boyfriend Jungkook that he was on his way to your place. Even though it was close to 1 a.m., you were used to him showing up this late, especially after working the late shift from his part-time job. He also didn’t have to worry about you being asleep this late since you tend to stay awake into the late hours of the night. What did surprise you was opening the door to find a disheveled and tense version of your typically tidy and cheerful boyfriend.
You gesture for him to come inside and, after shutting the door, you gave him a comforting hug. "Is everything alright, babe? You look terrible"
Despite giving you a soft smile, Jungkook still couldn’t hide the anxiety bubbling inside of him. "I really needed to see you," he opens. "Can we talk?"
While escorting him to your bedroom, a variety of worse case scenarios plagued your mind. Is he in trouble? Did something happen at work? Is he dying?! You tried to mentally stuff down these intrusive thoughts but it was  a losing battle for you. Once you two reached your room, you sat at the edge of your neatly made bed, watching Jungkook nervously pace in front of you.
A moment passed before you finally broke the stressful silence. "Can you please tell me what's wrong? You're scaring me," you said with a slight laugh, an attempt to pass off your fears as a joke.
Jungkook walks over to you and sits close to you on the bed. He looks at you deeply into your eyes. His own eyes were glassy and tired, a little bloodshot even. "Things have been pretty stressful lately," he solemnly confesses, "it's getting too much to bear."
You took his hand and lightly caressed his bony knuckles with your thumb. "Go on, honey," you said, encouraging him.
You let Jungkook vent about his troubles to you. About how he feels overworked from his job. About his sleeping troubles. And about the many responsibilities he had to take care of. The more he talked, you hear his voice becoming increasingly shaky. When he finally let himself break down, you pulled him to your chest and stroke his slightly fizzled locks.  As always, you felt terrible that he had so many things weighing on his shoulders and wished that you could take a lot of his worries away. But during moments like these, all you could really do is hold him tight and tell him he’s going to be okay.
Once his sniffling dies down, he slowly sits up and looks at you. “Thanks for listening to me,” he says while wiping his tear stained face with his sweater sleeve.
“Of course, Kookiepants” you smile warmly at him, “It’s what I’m here for.” Cupping his face, you slightly lift yourself off your bed to give him a gentle kiss on his forehead. You figured everything was okay until watch his smile gradually fade away.
“I have to tell you something,” his expression changes into a serious one. Knowing how rare he displays such a look, your mind again goes to thinking of the worst scenarios possible.
“What?,” you asked cautiously.
Jungkook takes a moment before continuing. “You know the friend I made online? The one from Germany, Alice?”
“Yeah I know her,” you rolled your eyes derisively. Of course you knew her, she was his Overwatch buddy. When they first began playing together a year ago, Jungkook would go on and on about how kickass of a player she was and back then you didn’t think that much about it. It only started bothering when the two began regularly messaging each other on Instagram. It’s not that you didn’t like Alice; it just kinda annoyed you that some other chick was getting so close to your boyfriend. Jungkook knew how jealous you’d get and assured you that his relationship with the girl was strictly platonic. And of course you trusted Jungkook. In the many years of your relationship, he never gave you a reason otherwise.
“What about Alice?”
Although he hesitated momentarily, he doesn’t take his gaze away from you. “Well me and her have been talking a lot lately and… I think I’m growing strong feelings for her.”
You suddenly stopped stroking his hair and looked down at him. “What do you mean by that, Jungkook?”
He started to tear up again. “What I mean is that, I think I’m falling in love with her.”
“...What?” You feel your body go cold from pure shock. It was as if the world had come to a complete stop and only you and him were in motion. “You’re in love with her?”
“But I still love you!  Just somehow I feel the same way for the both of you. It just happened,” his voice breaks. He then holds his head in the hands and starts to cry again. “I’m sorry, Y/N.”
“And how does she feel about you?,” you asked despite knowing what the answer will be.
He snivels. “She told me she feels the same way.”
At that moment, you feel an intense mix of emotions. Sadness. Anger. Disbelief. Confusion. How could this happen?, you thought. How does a man have such strong feelings with a girl he’s never met in real life and only been talking for a year? The same feelings he has for the woman he’s been with for almost a decade? You actually had a history with Jungkook; you two have gone through so much and more. Compared to you, what did he have with this Alice girl? You tried to add things up in your head but nothing made sense. This situation doesn’t make any fucking sense.
A normal person would tap into their raw emotions and start bawling like crazy or even start screaming. But you couldn’t bring yourself to do that. Sure you were completely devastated but the shock hasn’t sunk down deep enough for you to cry just yet. You also weren’t much of a screamer.
Repeating your actions from before, you took Jungkook into your arms and gently rocked him to calm him down. He holds you back tightly, as if he was afraid of letting you slip away.
“I don’t wanna be in love with her, Y/N. I only wanna be with you,” he says between sniffles. “You have every right to be mad at me.”
“I’m not mad at you, Jungkook,” you responded quickly. “I’m just mad at the circumstances. If what you’re saying is true, that you’re in love with this girl, I really wished it hadn’t got to this point between you two.” You stopped talking for a minute as you listened to him whimper into your chest. You then push him back a little, causing him to look up at you. “I am happy that you’re being honest with me. You could’ve hid it from me and do something behind my back. But you didn’t.”
“Of course, Y/N,” he says while wiping his tears away. “I love you. I wanna spend the rest of my life with you.” He leans forward and lightly pecks on the lips before resting his forehead on yours.
You felt the tears you’ve been desperately holding in finally spill from your eyes. “I love you too.”
You and Jungkook sat on your bed holding on to each other for a little bit longer. During that time, you told him that he couldn’t talk to Alice anymore. He promised to end the friendship and to block on every social media account he followed her on. When he finally calmed down, you found yourself going into “doting girlfriend mode”. You suggested he should take a relaxing shower while you washed his laundry. And when he came out of the shower, you made sure he had a nice, hot meal waiting for him. The two of you talked and hung out for awhile before finally deciding to turn in. However, you waited until Jungkook was fast asleep before you quietly snuck out of bed, heading towards the bathroom.
After flicking the lights on and closing the door behind you, that was when you finally let yourself fall apart. You slid down against the door and silently sobbed to yourself. You still weren’t sure if these were sad or angry tears, could be a depressing mixture of both. As you wept alone on the bathroom floor, your head leaning on the cold wall next to you, the same questions repeatedly echoed inside your head, “Why? What did I do to deserve this? Why is this happening to me?”

Tumblr media
y/n sat at the edge of her queen sized bed, fingers running oh so carefully across the dress. the dress was a long, baby blue color which looked amazing with her eyes. the dress fell off her shoulders, a slit in the right leg. it fit her perfectly, complimenting her figure in the most amazing way. because of the tightness, she couldn’t wear a bra or else she may have died from how tight is was around her chest.
her legs dangled over the edge, barefoot trying her hardest to not touch the cold hardwood. the last place she wanted to go tonight was the midsummers party. but, growing up a kook life she had to go. thats the one thing about her life she hated. a kook.
a stupid name for being rich. she hated the title so much, that she had decided the past few months of her life to change. it happened the moment she met kiara.
“holy shit!” kiara ran across the beach, kicking sand up behind her. the two girls ran straight into eachother, falling backwards. y/n rubbed her forehead, looking up at the girl that she had crashed into. they looked at eachother the same way, realizing they somehow knew eachother. “you go to kook academy?” kiara finally spoke up, breaking the silence. and for a moment, she forgot what she was running from. y/n nodded, standing and helping the other girl.
y/n dusted the sand off her ass, looking back up at the girl. “kie! stop socializing with the kooks,” a boy hollered, running beside kiara and slapping her back before running again to two other boys. was it that obvious y/n was a kook?
“sorry about that,” kiara smiled to the obviously concerned girl. “thats my friend. hes a dick,” she whispered to y/n, which finally got a reaction from her.
“so, why’re you on the cut?” kiara asked, trying to start a conversation.
y/n shrugged, arms crossing over her chest. “can’t stand my family anymore.” she laughed, rocking from the balls of her feet to her toes. she felt awkward, having necessarily nobody to talk to. she hadn’t lied when she said she couldn’t stand being with her family anymore. all they did was criticise her, saying she had to be more like her sister who had a bunch of friends. while y/n stood mainly by herself with maybe one friend.
kiara nodded, glancing back at the boys who were waiting for her. “hey, do you know how to surfboard?” she asked suddenly, catching y/n off guard.
“yeah, a little.” y/n shrugged, still rocking a little.
“wanna come with my friends and i?”
thats where y/n met the rest of the group.
ever since that day, y/n had joined the friend group. she didn’t fit in immediately. the boys weren’t a fan of her being there when kiara introduced her, but eventually they came around. one more than others. jj thought she was gorgeous, a funny girl who broke out of her shell. but, she was a kook. and jj hates kooks. so he would always pick arguments with her, but y/n never took them to heart.
they got along well. jj always shared his beers with her, knowing she can’t handle as much alchohol as him. he was the most protective of her than anybody, never letting her out of his sight. it wasn’t hard for the pogues to see that he had a crush. everybody but the two knew about it.
when y/n finally fit in, it was like she was always there. her and kiara both agreed on how much they hated the kook life, though there were some upsides, being on the run was a lot more fun.
controlling your own life. it was amazing. refreshing. just being free.
the memory made y/n smile to herself, standing from her bed finally to finish whatever she had left of getting ready. she was going for kiara. the girl finished her makeup, sliding on the sandals she was wearing and going down the spiral stairs. she finished putting her earrings and entering the car with her family. they rode in silence, entering together and eventually everybody left to do their own thing.
“kie!” y/n called from across the porch, running to the girl and embracing her. “i already know i’m not gonna make it her for long,” she sighed dramatically, getting a slap from kie.
“don’t worry, your boyfriend will be here soon enough.” kie teased, arm draping around the girls shoulder like jj’s had done so many times. y/n’s face flushed, hard to tell under the makeup she wore. “oh y/n, be safe. i don’t want you getting hurt,” kie continued to mess with the girl, making her voice deep as to make fun of jj.
“oh shut up kie. you act like i don’t see the way pope and you eye fuck eachother.” y/n retorted, shaking the girl off of her. this got a reaction from kie, the two fighting eachother while making fun of pope and jj.
“damn,” jj spoke to himself, quite loudly, walking towards the two girls. he wore a butlers outfit, hair somewhat slicked back but still messy and untamed. jj looked sexy, as y/n would think.
“see something you like?” kie gestured to y/n, making jj bite his lip jokingly.
“hell yeah,” his arm wrapped around y/n’s shoulder like kies had done earlier, making kie’s eyebrows raise. “how are you two enjoying the party?” he acted like a sever, pulling away from y/n as a group of kooks passed by.
“oh its amazing,” y/n joked, eyes batting aggressively to help convince the boy it was a joke. from behind jj, y/n spotted rafe, topper and their goons. her face pulled into a snarl, “bogeys two o’ clock.”
jj turned, eyes rolling. “they look dumb,” he muttered, connecting eye contact with rafe before turning around. y/n hummed in agreement, kie doing the same.
“hey, i see pope,” kie pointed to the boy who was turned from the group. “i’ll be back.” she let out a brief smile, picking the edge of her dress up to move quickly towards the boy. this left jj and y/n alone, in a peaceful silence.
jj smoothed down the button up he was wearing, looking up at the girl in front of him. he felt the note in his pocket, remembering why he was at the midsummer party in the first place. “i’ll be back, madam, i have to go give a note to princess kook.” he spoke in a posh accent, taking y/n’s hand into his own and pressing a kiss to the back of it.
y/n nodded, bowing respectfully at the boy and walking away in time with him. she went to the back, looking for her family. knowing she wouldn’t be able to find them, she weaved her way in and out of the many people and successfully entered the building.
footsteps were behind her, but she ignored them. suddenly, a boy walks infront of her. hes much taller, dark skinned and y/n recognized him as kelce. her breath hitched, but she continued to walk, trying to go around the boy.
a hand grabbed y/n’s arm, tugging her backwards making her trip on her heels. “um, excuse me-” she tried staying polite but stopped when she saw rafe was the one holding her. seeing the boy made her writhe and try and free herself. “let me go!” she seethed, falling onto her ass.
rafe tsked, looking down the hall before shoving her into the mens bathroom. it was conveniently empty, which helped to bring a sick smile onto his face. topper followed in, while kelce took a moment before also entering.
outside, jj was looking around for you everywhere. he had given the note to sarah cameron, pushing past many people as he tried his hardest to spot you over the crowd. “kie!” jj called, spotting somebody he finally knew. “have you seen y/n?” he was worried. you never just disappeared without somebody. or at least without telling somebody.
kie shook her head, not knowing. “last i saw she was inside.” she nodded her head towards the building, making jj sigh. jj glanced around, noticing he didn’t see the three dickheads either. this made his heart speed up. he tensed a little, ignoring whatever kie was saying and leaving to enter the huge building.
and back inside, y/n was struggling to get out of rafes grip, being dragged around the dirty bathroom floors still on her ass. he gave her arm a rough squeeze, which will most definitely be leaving a bruise before dropping it. y/n hissed, recoiling back into herself in the far corner. topper and rafe stood above her, topper more uncomfortable rather than the boy beside him.
y/n looked at them, concern laced on her face.  “what do you want-” she hissed, her leg getting grabbed as rafe crouched to her height. he pulled her close to his body, her knee flush with the boys crotch. where the fuck is jj? the girl wondered to herself, pulling herself away from the boy.
jj ran down the long halls, opening every door to try and find the girl who he was looking for. finally he stopped to catch his breath, waiting outside of the womens restrooms. they wouldn’t be in there, he thought, but he might as well check. jj gathered whatever self esteem he had left, pushing open the door.
rafe’s hand slid up from y/ns calf to her lower thigh, making the girls stomach drop. topper crouched beside the boy, grabbing y/n’s wrists as she went to slap him away. she struggled against him, her mouth opening to scream but she felt like her mouth was dry. she felt empty, weak, trying hard to fight but she knew there was no way. kelce watched from behind rafe, giving y/n a look of apology, almost, before looking away.
y/n regained her energy when she heard soft footsteps outside of the bathroom, letting out a shrill scream of help. it was cut short by a very rough- and non-consensual- kiss. she pulled away quickly, eyes filling with tears as she did so. her head slammed against the wall, sending a shock of pain through her head down her neck. when had she gotten so close to the wall? what are they gonna do to her? now her heart was racing, letting out a silent sob.
jj heard the scream. he stopped, waiting to see if he could hear another. he rushed out of the womens bathroom, bursting the mens bathroom door open. he stopped, his ears turning red from anger quickly. seeing y/n in the corner, surrounded by three guys who he knew she despised made his blood boil.
his anger got the best of him quickly. jj jumped into action immediately, throwing a punch across kelce’s face, catching him off guard. kelce hissed in pain,  clutching his cheek before quickly retaliating.
the fighting made rafe and topper release y/n quickly, the girl cowering in the corner in fear. there was blood flying around, staining jj’s shirt as he was obviously cornered. y/n cursed, standing as she watched rafe go to kick jj in the balls. she jumped onto his back, grabbing the back of his collar to choke the boy. he coughed, flipping the girl off with ease. he turned, kicking her shin roughly with a snarl.
jj’s arms were pinned behind him, topper punching his stomach and watching the boy double over in pain. kelce released his grip slightly, giving jj the opportunity to  reel his leg foreward, pushing it backwards into kelce’s crotch with whatever energy he had left.
y/n stood quickly, her arm swinging, punching rafe across the face and hitting his jaw. the sudden burst of adrenaline gave the punch extra force, knocking the boy back and making him stumble. he snarled, lunging at y/n and knocking her to the ground, he held her down, tearing the gorgeous blue fabric she wore.
anger surged through jj at the sight, topper going to hit him again. he dodged quickly, punching the boy in the gut and pushing him backwards into the wall. he threw atleast ten punches at the boys face and stomach, slumping down quickly with blood rushing from his nose and lip.
rafe ignored what was happening behind him, one of his hands caressing y/n’s face in a sick way. “you’d be much prettier if you weren’t such a fucking slut.” he hissed, slapping her across the face with anger. his face softened for a moment as he saw what he just did, but quickly returning to his normal resting bitch face.
y/n thought jj might’ve killed him. jj pulled rafe backwards, both of them stumbling before regaining their form. jj grabbed rafes collar, grabbing his jaw roughly. a surge of pain ran through rafe’s body, stopping him from fighting back.
“you never. and i mean fucking never. call my girl a slut.” jj hissed, lifting his leg to kick the boy back. rafe fell, to tired to fight back. jj’s eyes looked at you, covering your chest where the tear was. he sunk beside you, anger still coursing through his veins.
“i’m so sorry i wasn’t there,” y/n could tell jj was beating himself up for no reason, it wasn’t his job to look after you constantly anyway. jj shook his head, feeling so terrible. “what’d they do to you?” he asked softly, seeing as the girl looked a little stirred up but not awful.
“he tried touching me. but im okay,” y/n cooed, arms wrapping around the boy. she didn’t care about the tear anymore. her hands wrapped around the back of jj’s head, holding him close.
“i’m gonna kill him. i swear,” jj spoke as though the boy wasn’t close by, though he may have left at this point (they weren’t paying attention to the three boys they fought off). y/n shook her head, staying silent.
“is there an issue, gentlemen?” a guard opened the door, catching the five in there off guard. y/n looked at him with wide eyes, covering her chest again.
“no there... actually yes.” jj started, clearing his throat and wrapping his arm around the girl beside him.  “we were in here for um, destruction of property.” he came up with something, smiling at the guard and squeezing y/n’s side as to tell her to go along with it.
“yup. and these men were about to escort us out.” y/n continued, smiling cheekily as she glanced at the boys around her.
“which is what you should do,” jj stood, helping the girl up.
“escort us. out.” y/n wasn’t the best at lying, but the guard seemed to believe them. he led them out, rafe catching their attention again
rafe let out a sly cough, muttering the word ‘slut’ under his breath. jj turned, ready to throw another punch but y/n caught his arm and stopped him.
“he isn’t worth it,” y/n said softly, leading jj back outside.
after jj taking a shot from a random man, and y/n escaping the wrath of her parents, the pogues escaped the party and ran to meet john b. y/n and jj stayed back, not saying much. there was plenty of awkward silence between them, both wanting to say something about what just happened but they couldn’t. y/n wore the blazer jj had on earlier, covering her chest from everybody.
“so.” y/n stopped walking, jj following soon and looking at her.
“so?” he seemed confused, stepping closer.
“your girl?” y/n brought up what he said earlier, a smile on her face. jj’s face dropped, hoping she forgot he said that.
“i have no clue what your talking about.” jj shrugged it off, continuing to walk. he sauntered away, trying not to show his embarrassment.
“wow, okay.” y/n laughed, running to catch up with him. “guess you won’t wanna be my boy then?” she teased, arm wrapping around his arm and latching them together.
“well, who said that?” jj’s face flushed, grinning cheekily at the girl. the smiled at each other, before bursting out into laughter. they were far behind the group, turning towards each other.
it seemed like there was a gravitational pull between them. y/n’s hands cupped his cheeks, pulling him into a short but sweet kiss. jj’s arms wrapped around her waist, pulling away from each other but shortly returning to each other again. they felt in that moment, like they were perfect for each other. and they were.

cloudtail’s daughter — worldbuilding & logistical things
so i've been working on an au re. dovewing being the direct child of cloudtail and brightheart. check out my cloudtail's daughter tag for more info, because i'm basically just jumping in this time with minimal context.
that said, i think this is relatively self-contained. it's mostly thoughts about the world of warriors, lumped in with specific changes for the au purposes.
[3.8k words, 14 min read. section headers, very long paragraphs. paragraphs in parathesis and italics are sidebars that can be skipped. a lot of spelling mistakes because my grammer checker cuts me off after like 2k words. sorry.]
section one: po3
so i've said before i want to minimize the changes made specifically in po3 for the purposes of this au. a) because that means i only have to keep track of 6 books worth of content (i've given myself through bramblestar's storm to get to the point where it could mostly fit into canon, but for reasons that are obvious re. my dovewing/tigerheart take, tigerheart's shadow would be a little weird, but not out of canon. anyway we don't get any tigerheart pov in this so who knows what he's thinking.)
anyway, hollyleaf plays a significant role in the ending three books of the rewrite, getting her own pov in book 4 the forgotten warrior. so she can't go exactly the same way it happens in po3. i need her back in thunderclan by book 2 for beavers, not book 5. also, she still needs to end up mates with fallen leaves. because changing that would count as a major series change that could have an impact on the future continuity and this series rewrite is intended to be fairly self contained.
right. so hollyleaf has her shit a bit more together, but she still kills ashfur and goes into the tunnels. the difference is we're ignoring the entire hollyleaf's story novella. don't get me wrong, it was a really good novella, but she doesn't have that much time. i'm not interested in figuring out the details of what happens, but she returns to the clans either before book one or in book one, i haven't decided. she continues to see fallen leaves fairly regularly, though, including spending irregular nights with him. everyone just kind of...accepts hollyleaf's ghost boyfriend, because no one wants to upset hollyleaf again.
lionblaze's personality is not entirely nonexistant in po3, contrary to popular opinion, but he does have to support an entire book in this rewrite, and it's the weakest book in the arc, so he's gotta have something. i've nudged him to be a bit gregarious and open. you know, big and friendly and warm. terrifying in battle though.
jayfeather ends on much better terms with brightheart. i know he doesn't really end on a bad note with her, but this is also to help story flow a bit.
other changes will, i'm sure, crop up here and there, but those are the three major ones. i've got tonnes of changes i'd like to make, but i'm keeping it minor. (notably, if it were up to me, jayfeather would do his back in time sequence once, not twice, and it would be in omen of the stars. hollyleaf's ghost boyfriend would add more solid ground to it, and that would be established in book 2, but as i've decreed the rules, it is not up to me.
also, dovekit and jaykit would be siblings, and dovepaw would become the medicine cat dovefeather, and jaypaw would be the warrior jaywing. that's a bigger change though for a different au.)
section two: family dynamics & a bit of genetics
so one thing i really like in omen of the stars is how close dove/ivy/white are. it's really cute. cloudtail and dovekit are super close in the first book, and brightheart, dovekit, and ivykit are going to stay close throughout their lives. (cloudtail will also stay close with his daughters, but dovewing and ivypool consistently look to whitewing for support, and brightheart is good for that too.)
i have whitewing as still existing because age wise, i think it makes sense for brightheart to have her younger litter at dovekit and ivykit, than for them to be her first litter and for amber/dew/snow continue to exist. (in my hypothetical jaywing/dovefeather au, this is reversed.)
i'm not keen on her being close with her younger sisters. i do think, for future story purposes, whitewing and birchfall would have amber/snow/dew. this is a super unimportant change because the only part of that litter that matters is that lilykit is fostered so that lilyheart can then foster twigkit and violetkit, and there's 0 reason that whitewing can't be responsible for that.
(be honest, did you even remember that chain of events? did you even remember who raised lilykit? did you even remember sorreltail was her birth mother who died? yeah, that's what i thought.)
anyway, i've danced around the specific genetics of how we get a grey dovekit from a white cloudtail and a red brightheart, and you may think, "matthew, one paragraph isn't dancing around it," and that's because you have no idea how much i care about this and how much i have to say about this. if you don't want to read 1.3k words about cat genetics, skip to the next section. the last two paragraphs is the only part that's even kind of important.
so. i've put a whole lot of thought into this. because obviously dovekit is responsible for being grey to make the whole bit work about her, you know, being dovekit, and dovekit must be dovekit for dove's gentle wings to work. so this is important.
i'm going to walk through the two options: tortie brightheart and tortie dovewing. (*technically, calico brightheart and either for dovewing, but i'm keeping it brief.)
(an aside that's totally skipable: so there is a gene on the extension locus E/e which causes cats born black to turn to amber, which definitely could be brightheart, but it's pretty rare, so i'm sticking with my calico assumptions. that said, in brightheart's official art, there is a black ring around her nose, implying a very specific silver tabby to amber deal. given her kit coat isn't described anywhere i can find it, i'd say it's actually the best description of brightheart. that said, best description is not the most likely. anyway, if this were the case, i wouldn't need all of this write up. so know that there's an easy solution, but i'm choosing to ignore it because of its rarity and because i don't want to check if brightheart could have inherited the silver genes she would have had to for this to work. it's definitely possible, given that frostfur has the same deal as cloudtail, see below, and lionheart could be golden --- as in the formal word for a cat with certain genes, a color linked to silver, but, well, i just can't find it likely. i'll add a short description of how it would work at the very end of this though.)
in either case, cloudtail is the same, so i'll address him first.
so, cats have four genes on the white allele, Wd, Ws, w, and wg. Wd is dominant white, and it could be what cloudtail has, but since he has blue eyes, it would be likely for him to be deaf, and, because it's dominant, there's a low chance that neither dovekit nor ivykit inherit it. is what i would be saying if whitewing wasn't his first daughter. she is also solid white with blue eyes, so to me, that makes me thing he has Wd- (as in, any other gene.)
the other option, Ws, requires him to be WsWs to be fully white, and brightheart to be either WsWs or Ws- for whitewing to inherit WsWs. given that ambermoon and dewnose are not fully white, it seems that brightheart is Ws- and cloudtails is Wdw (or Wdwg) in order for their theoretical image to be correct.
(an aside of even less importance: ambermoon's father was not cloudtail. the short explanation is that she shares one X chromosome with princess, who was XX --- see my discussion of tortoiseshells below, we know princess wasn't one, so she can't be XXo --- and one with brightheart, who's XXo or XoXo. therefore, ambermoon and princess cannot both have accurate canon descriptions because one of them needs to be a tortie. i think it's more likely she was sired by a red tom. yes, it is possible for kits in the same litter to have different sires, and yes, that is necessary, because no one else has dominant white in thunderclan AFAIK. this means making her birchfall and whitewing's gives a bit more wiggle room in all this. a bit. she could also have the same thing covered on brightheart in the above slide, but that's complicated for other reasons.)
brightheart is almost certainly Wsw or Wswg. they're not both wgwg because that leaves no options for ambermoon, who i'm interpretting as not having any white. cloudtail inherits from princess wg because of birman gloving demonstrating on her white paws (there are other ways, but given her description, which fits it almost identically, i'm going with that.) so for white, we have Wdwg for cloudtail and Wsw for brightheart.
ivypool inherits Wswg so she can have her inconsistent white, and dovewing inherits wwg.
now, we don't know anything about cloudtail's father, except that he's white too (or cloudtail couldn't be white.) princess is light brown tabby, which is something i'm having a hard time deciding her genetics for, so we'll work back to that (neither of the obvious options leads to a cat that looks like princess, because of how tabbies work, the combination is likely not to be obvious anyway) if i decide we need her genetics.
right so for dovewing to be solid grey, two things must be true: cloudtail and brightheart must be either Dd or dd (dilution). brightheart, i don't believe, is dilute, because i've seen cream on cats and it's far closer to sandstorm's color than brightheart, so i'm calling her Dd. cloudtail can be either.
dovewing is dd, and so is ivypool. that's how you get light grey.
now, either cloudtail or brightheart have to have a B- black phenotype. (special case included, if you read the aside) and i think it's more likely to be cloudtail. then, brightheart can be blbl, which is cinnamon, and would help hide her tortie-ness. (we're covering that later.)
at this point, dovewing is more or less settled. if you're comfortable with this type of genetics, you can probably work it out. dovekit inherits B-/dd/wwg, and she's everything we need. the fact that she's not a tabby does kind of matter, but not really, because the nonagouti gene is recessive so even if cloudtail was a masked tabby, he can still be Aa and brighheart can be Aa, so she won't show. that makes dovewing B-/dd/wwg/aa, for those following along at home.
ivypool is a tabby, so she'd be B-/bb/Ws-/A-.
okay, we have the core of them settled down. there's a lot more that goes into types of tabbies, but that doesn't really matter here. the last bit that matters is the tortie issue.
as is a somewhat commonly known fact, tortie cats are almost always female, because the phaeomelanin (red pigment) gene in cats is sex linked to Xo (vs X for eumelanin, the black gene). this is expressed as O/o when discussing the specific gene, but since we only care if its dominant, the XO/Xo distinction is slightly faster to type if X means black and Xo means orange.
anyway, these are codominant, if a cat has two, they'll be expressed at random. that's how tortie cats exist. since for the vast majority of cases, only female cats have two X chromosomes, only female cats can be XXo.
(as an aside, that's another reason for the clans to find sol strange. i know the clans have a lot of male calicos, but sol was the most distinctive one, since redtail died in the prologue and i can't recall any others off the top of my head.)
anyway, dovewing needs to inherit XX to be fully black (grey), so brightheart needs to be tortie to pass on one to her and remain orange. alternatively, brightheart is XoXo and dovewing is a tortie. i'm sticking with brightheart tortie because that's actually how i pictured her, so i like it better, but it doesn't really matter, since the cream on dilute torties is actually rather subtle.
ivypool is the same as dovewing, although she could be a tortie if dovewing isn't and brightheart is, something i quite like the idea of.
now, for option 3, the cryptic option in the aside. basically, to summarize, you can get black cats who turn orange over time. the end result is a cat who looks very much like brightheart if they start silver tabbies (like ivypool could be), up to the black ring around her nose in the official art. that makes it the best way to describe brightheart.
however, it's pretty rare, so i chose to ignore it for my analysis. if brightheart did have this gene, then nothing would change about dovekit and ivykit from their canon descriptions, nor would her's change, except for her apprentice art, which would need to be updated as spreading orange over silver.
this is also the only option that gives us fully red ivykit, something i have decreed adorable.
over 1k words about cat colors later, here's my take: dovewing and ivypool with somewhat mirrored tortie spots (they'll never be perfectly mirrored, both because ivypool has white and because its entirely random) is cute and adds something extra to all of that art where they're mirrored.
i'd rather have straight red brightheart because she's got so much art very clearly not calico, and i'd rather have the two sisters match each other for cinematic drama than change brightheart. the accurate thing to do would be calico brightheart because it could be easily hidden by the right genes on the B locus, but i don't want to do that. so. i hope this was illustrative.
section three: clan culture
this here has no impact on plot but i've read a lot of worldbuilding stuff developing distinct cultures for the clans and honestly, that's why i'm so sad book 6 takes place with two shadowclan narrators. unfortunately, dovewing and ivypool are, like, crucial to the success of the clan cats, so they need to be there.
that said, were i to write this, i would certain write novellas for lionblaze and jayfeather.
anyway, i'm going to take what we've come to see as "standard clan culture" as thunderclan culture. they have a good deal of contact not with twolegs but with kittypets (compared to the opposite for riverclan) in the old terretory, so it makes sense they developed a more rigid, militeristic life, less free and less spiritual than the other clans necessarily. they're trying to be tough in front of the kittypets.
riverclan is just kinda...chill. they like flowers and shiny things. they copy twolegs because its fun (cats irl do this because they want to be like you --- being like you seems safe to them, but these kitties do it because its fun.)
so they make, not flower crowns because, no thumbs, but certainly weave flowers into den walls and leave petals places. (to everyone who keeps putting things on cats heads, please try doing that with the most patient domestic cat you know, and then i'll let you quietly correct yourself. i mean, continue doing it for fun, but if you seriously think that's possible...)
i do like the idea of them making wreathes its just, like, no opposable thumbs guys. maybe the medicine cats do it for religious holidays.
anyway, they have patrols far less regularly than thunderclan. they're also the most true to real cat schedules: most active at dawn and dusk. that's when fish are active.
so they're not lazy, sleeping all day, they get up earlier than all but the earliest risers in thunderclan and shadowclan. (windclan wakes up early too, we're getting to them.)
they also make shrines, but they don't really have a ton of weight to them. they're copying what they see.
when cats die, however, the trinkets lining their nests are dispersed to their loved ones, and one or two are added to a collective pile/arrangement somewhere. riverclan has been pretty clear their nests float (although i can't tell you why, considering they just evacuate when that happens and have to rebuild), so the most useful thin i can think of is to preserve the trinkets.
they also are one of the two clans to celebrate proper holidays. there's not a good sense of order to them, but when a celebration is needed, a celebration is had.
that said, unlike thunderclan, the warrior vigil does remain strong in riverclan. this is because twolegs are far more common in their territory, and so learning to be quiet when necessary is important, and the vigil reinforces that. riverclan cats are also really good at sitting still: you have to, to be able to catch fish.
shadowclan is pretty serious, but unlike thunderclan, they're serious about religion. being a medicine cat in shadowclan is a pretty serious deal. they tend to die young. (i'm stealing this mostly/entirely from warrior cats redux because i can't get it out of my head.)
they retain bringing apprentices to the moonpool in the new territory. it was always an important deal for them, whereas in thunderclan it's kind of like "oh yeah make sure that happens," like a mastery project in high school or a first year seminar in university.
they also care a lot about their ancestors. i believe blackstar is the one who called the names of the fallen during every gathering? yeah. that's because remembering the dead is really important in shadowclan.
they've got a lot of nursery tales about ghosts who grew vengeful once their names were forgotten, fading from starclan but not allowed to fully die. so. when everyone dies real fast like that, carving their names into everyone's memory is super important.
(if it wasn't blackstar who did that it is in this au.)
anyway, they've got a good amount of order to their life, like thunderclan, and the camp is also a lot quieter. in thunderclan, kits are under a good amount of danger from badgers and foxes and hawks, oh my!, but pine forests are a bit safer, since foxes are the only serious predetor.
i mean, it's complicated, and i can't really figure out what biome to base this analysis on, but i'm sticking with "foxes are all shadowclan really has to worry about" because it works for me. so shadowclan kits are allowed (suprivised) out of camp much earlier.
i know this contradicts tigerheart's shadow, and my choice was either "shadowclan: militant about protecting kits" or "shadowclan: dgaf" and i'm going with "after brokenstar, they did get real protective of their kits, which is when tigerkit was born and raised, but over time, they've relaxed back to their natural state of chill"
anyway, they're probably the most similar to thunderclan, but dovewing vibes there so much better because there's a real sense of order for purpose, not just because. so there's less shouting about who is going on patrol and who's hunting. the dawn patrol is leaving because if you're up at dawn, you need to secure the territory. etc.
and while she's part of a prophecy, shadowclan revers the prophecy itself, not dovewing. dovewing is not special for being a part of it, she's just doing her role for clan life. her role happens to be different than the usual, but so what? she's just a cat.'
also, they have holidays. namely, the new moon is a big celebration night, but they also celebrate the seasons, and new life. this is part of why tigerheart gets so homesick: even dovewing, his wife, doesn't share this part of life with him, and he misses it.
finally, windclan. i don't know honestly what to do with them. they're supposed to be the most spiritual but that's not reflected in how they're written, even in like tallstar's revenge, so i don't know. i think they're the calm riverclan crossed with the more focused on protocol of clan life thunderclan.
they rise early because rabbits, and their hunting patrols are smaller and less organized. based on the books, they just run full wild after rabbits most of the time, which means they scare off the other ones for a while, so it makes sense to have a mentor and apprentice go out every hour or so during the waking day to grab a bunny or bird than for a bunch of cats to feed the clan for a day.
they do have a lot of respect for medicine cats and leaders. starclan isn't seen as something the average cat has any connection at all with. i have a hard time keeping track of who complains about what in the broken code and avos, but i feel like windclan gets angry at some point about shadowsight's visiosn.
anyway, so a cat like jayfeather is like "oh he real cool" and that's fun for jayfeather. everyone expects great things from him. because, you know, medicine cat and in a prophecy? can you imagine i mean shame he came to be via crowfeather and leafpool but you'd be a fool not to admit he's a credit to his parent's names.
they're also pretty proud. and private. very private. no one knows at all what goes on in windclan. i'd not put it past them to have a secondary camp to move to if they get uncomfortable with so many people knowing where their camp is.
i mean, how else do you explain them keeping the tunnlers secret for so long? i mean, like completely secret, no one else knew about them secret, we found out about them in a super edition secret for so long?
section four: medicine cat shit
this is a short section, but i want there to be the idea, especially in shadowclan and windclan, that medicine cats are really important to the integrity of a clan, so they need to be spiritually pure. this doesn't mean they can't have been warriors, but they can't break the code.
that's why thunderclan and riverclan medicine cats share herbs so much more than the others: if windclan and shadowclan leadrs say no, medicine cats are risking a lot by disobeying.
this is also part of why leafpool steps down when the truth comes out. what she did is bad enough, but it will be far worse for crowfeather if she doesn't step down, and shadowclan and windclan will come for her head.
nightcloud and breezepelt are also angry because not only did crowfeather have kits out of clan, but it was with a medicine cat. that's like having sex out of wedlock with a nun.
and that's pretty much all i have for this. most of it was taken up by cat genetics, because integrity matters to me.

Final Fantasy 14 Writing Challenge Day Eleven: Heart of Gold
Day Ten -- Masterpost -- Day Twelve
As devoted to her work as she was, Moenbryda was well acquainted with noticing when others were paying attention to her. Then again, she thought as she gave a sidelong glance through the curtain of her hair at the two who were trying and failing to not be seen, at least they had innocent intentions.
Roger and Lara, the two Warriors of Light, were shoving each other and bickering in whispered tones. Their “hiding place” was just behind one of the bush planters that the Rising Stones had placed around it as more natural dividers. For as young as they were, the two would have to crouch to keep their heads from being spotted. They were too focused on their heated (if quiet) conversation to notice that it wasn’t concealing them at all anymore. From the way they were pointing, clearly it had something to do with her.
She might as well have some fun with them.
Gently easing herself out of her chair, Moenbryda padded over to the “hiding place” of the Warriors of Light. Neither of them sensed her as she got close enough to hear what they were talking about. “--don’t see what the big deal is, you should ask her!” Roger hissed.
“It’s your question, you need to ask.” Lara whispered back just as fiercely.
“Yeah but you ask this stuff way better than I do! And! I’m the one that keeps getting scared by him anyway so I shouldn’t have to ask!”
“All the more reason for you to do it, Roger! You’ve got to show you’re braver than that! Sh-she’ll just think it’s stupid if I ask.”
He stared at her for a few seconds before he responded. “...so you’re whole reason why you won’t talk to her is because you think she’ll think you’re stupid. And that’s why you’ve been getting all blushy around--”
“I don’t! Get that blushy around her!!” Lara whisper-exclaimed, whilst her cheeks grew a darker and darker pink by the second. She seemed to be in the process of hiding her face behind her fingers while she rambled. “Moenbryda’s just! Really amazing and strong and smart and gosh all I did right was fight a few nasty things.”
It was a choice between giving away her position by laughing or giving away her position by commenting on the not-very-secret conversation happening right in front of her. Moenbryda chose the latter, if only to spare the girl’s feelings. “Well aren’t you just the sweetest thing.” Both Warriors of Light let out a very squeaky yelp before simultaneously running their backs into the planter they had been hiding behind. This had been the right call; Lara’s face had only become pinker instead of pale with shame. Moenbryda gave the two of them a wink. “Don’t knock what you’ve done, though. Primal slaying is far more impressive than what I’ve been up to.”
“N--you, uh,” Lara mumbled, her voice getting quieter with every attempt at a word. “R-roger wants to know why…”
Either in response to getting caught or as a reaction to save his best friend further embarrassment, Roger blurted, “Why is Urianger so weird?” Moenbryda blinked. He continued on when it was clear she had to think on an answer. “He talks in riddles and is always so serious and he always scares me cuz I forget he’s in the room half the time so like why is he like that?” His large green eyes stared up at her own silver ones. “The other Scions say you’re the closest to him, so...?”
What a question. “If I’m going to answer this, we’re going to be sitting at a table instead of crouching behind a planter. With some tea, preferably.” Moenbryda reached down and picked up both Warriors of Light by the arm until they were able to stand on their own. Roger had the more defined musculature, but otherwise the two young midlanders were pretty lightweight by her own standards. Lara was stuck in admiration again until the seawolf had sauntered past her quick enough that the girl had to scramble to catch up.
Not much longer after, the three of them sat at the round table that Moenbryda had taken over for her research. Books and papers were gathered up and set aside, far away from the cups of steaming hot tea that she’d poured. After getting settled in, she looked from boy to girl and back before raising a gray eyebrow. “So. You want to know why Urianger is as eccentric as he is.”
“W-well…” Roger couldn’t meet her gaze, instead scratching at the side of his face. “I just...don’t know much about him. All the other Scions trust him so I know he’s a good guy, but…” He trailed off.
“He’s like a really tall brown wall.” Lara finished for him. When the silver gaze came to rest on her own dark blue eyes, she fumbled for words again. “I-I mean, kind of like R-roger said he’s just...just really hard to guess at what he’s thinking. Even without the…”
“Pray tell, whatever dost thou meaneth, young Lara?” She fluttered her eyelids, putting a hand to her chest even while imitating Urianger’s usual tone. “Surely thou canst thinketh that this manner of speech be...obtuse?” That got a genuine giggle out of the girl. Nothing like making fun to offset nerves. “Surely one such as thee can fully grasp the intricacies of language far better than that of thine peers! Oh the youth of today hath fallen in scholarly pursuits! For shame!” The extra drama Moenbryda added got both of the teens to laugh. A success if she should say so herself.
“In all seriousness, though, Urianger has always been more in favor of keeping to himself than spending time with others. I’d say it was miraculous that he’s stayed this long in the company of the Scions of the Seventh Dawn, except that our Master Louisoix helped bring them together. And he’s grown fond of them since.” She blew at the hair that partially covered her face. “Ever loyal to those he deems worthy of loyalty is our dear Urianger.”
Lara and Roger looked to each other. There was something of a silent conversation between them before he seemed to lose and so spoke next. “Is that also why he sneaks up on people so easy? Because he keeps to himself a lot?”
She couldn’t stop the grin from growing on her face even if she wanted to. “He’s perfectly capable of making noise while he walks. I suspect he stays quiet around you purely for the amusement that comes when you discover him, though you’ll never be able to suss out that confession from him.”
“What!” Roger stood in his seat, getting dangerously close to spilling what was left of his tea.
“Did you not think him capable of humor?”
“Yes! I mean no! I mean--” The boy sat back down hard and dug his hands into his red hair as he stared at the table. “Oh my gods he’s been laughing at me this whole time.”
“Now now, he’d never laugh.” Moenbryda pointed out. “Smile, maybe, but definitely not when you could see him.”
“He can smile too?!”
“Wonder of wonders, I know.”
“Loyalty and humor…” Lara mused. “Well that’s two things we learned about him that we didn’t know before.” She carefully looked at the older woman out of the corner of her eye. “...Is there anything else you want to add?”
The possibilities of further embarrassing her childhood friend were laid out in front of her like a feast. Anecdotes from their shared past. Hilarious mistakes on his part while they were both under the tutelage of Louisoix. Odd quirks from childhood that he most certainly kept even after having not seen her in so long. Any of that could become ammo for the Warriors of Light to use in order to fluster and annoy him like he deserved after being particularly difficult to understand.
With a monumental amount of restraint, Moenbryda settled on a far more mature tact. Even Urianger would be proud, were he privy to her current thoughts.
“Loyalty and humor is fine and all, but one must take care if that’s all one knows about a person.” She took a sip of her still-warm tea. “A person of ill intent can still be loyal to their unrighteous cause. Humor can just as easily be derived from cruelty, not just harmless pranks.” Roger looked like he begged to differ, but she continued onward. “It’s the core of a person that one should look out for most of all. What they choose to do, again and again, when there is no reward to speak of or even if they are aware that the result will lead to negative consequences for themself.”
Looking between the two teens again, she smiled gently. “A concept you two are already familiar with, I’m sure.”
This time, the quiet was contemplative.
Lara spoke first. “But...we haven’t seen him doing a lot that involves his core. He’s always so...closed off. Or like he’s hiding, I guess.”
“Well then it’s good you came to speak to me about that.” Moenbryda winked. This time, the girl merely jumped instead of froze. “If I had to say any one phrase fit Urianger well, it would be that he ‘has a heart of gold.’”
“Really?” Roger piped up.
“Absolutely.” She nodded. “He will always put the wellbeing of others long before he thinks of himself. To his detriment in some cases, but admirable nonetheless.” Pointing a thick finger at the boy, she added, “Even his scare tactics, such as they are, are minor in nature. Enough to make you jump, but not enough for you to go for your weapon, right?”
It took him a moment to think back that far. When he finished, he sounded awestruck. “...yeah. That’s right.”
“See? You already had some of the evidence in front of you. All you both needed was a fresh perspective.”
Roger stared openly at Moenbryda before turning his gaze back to Lara. “No wonder you like her so much.”
The brief moment of respite for the girl’s poor face died as the pink came back in full force, even darkening into red in places. “Roger!” She shouted at him.
Moenbryda gave a happy sigh to herself and leaned back a little to drink her tea while the teens argued again. Out of the corner of her eye, she could see the far more stealth experienced members of the Scions of the Seventh Dawn snickering at the scene.
She might not have known the Warriors of Light for long, but it was good to see that such responsibilities hadn’t weighed them down enough that they forgot how to be their own age. Now if only someone would stop pretending that he was twenty years older than he actually was around her every so often.

Best Man Duties | | Noah + Ollie
WHEN: 4 February 2021
LOCATION: Hotel room before the wedding ceremony
NB: Whilst Ollie thought he had his nerves under control after secretly spending the morning with Lola, he starts to get nervous again as the ceremony approaches. Noah, taking his best man responsibilities seriously, steps in to help. Please note that this chatzy is a work in progress and will be updated as we go.
@olliexjames
Noah took his best man responsibilities seriously so whilst Mina and AJ were off getting dressed, he took the chance to check in with Ollie and see how he was feeling. After all, it was the most important day in Ollie's life thus far and whilst he knew that Ollie was head over heels in love with his wife-to-be, it would be understandable if he was a little overwhelmed. "Hey man, big day. How are you feeling?" Noah asked.
Ollie had been finishing up getting ready for the big day. Fixing his bow tie, he couldn’t help his eyes from continuing to dart back to the clock across the room — watching as the literal seconds began to count down to the moment of him saying ‘I do.’ He thought that he was fine after speaking to his bride just a few hours prior; but now that the minutes were passing, he found himself growing more and more nervous. His entire attention was focused on that damn clock, so much so that he almost completely missed his best man speaking to him. “W-what? Sorry, I’m just...I’m kind of freaking out right now.” He admitted sheepishly.
"Yeah, that's what I figured", Noah said simply when Ollie finally checked back into their conversation. "How big is the freak out? Do I need to pull the car around so that we can make a quick escape? Pour a line of shots? Put on Careless Whisper and have a deep and meaningful conversation? Whatever you need, I'm your man". There was no doubt in his mind that Ollie was madly in love with Lola but he understood that today was still a big deal; and it made sense that he was experiencing some nerves about the whole thing.
“The line of shots is a good place to start." Ollie said only half-jokingly, immediately gesturing towards the bottle of whiskey that laid on the hotel room's bar top. After fixing himself up he took a seat at the edge of the bed, sighing as he tried to sort his distorted thoughts. "I saw Lola earlier and everything made sense, and now I'm freaking out again. I don't know what the fuck's wrong with me right now." Ollie began, finding himself confiding in both his brother and best man. "What if I find some way to fuck this up? I really don't want to lose her."
Noah just nodded, making his way over to the bar and grabbing the bottle of whiskey. "At least you splurged on the good whiskey. It would be pretty disappointing if we were drinking the shitty stuff today", Noah commented as he made his way over to the bed and sat down beside Ollie, passing him the bottle. "We won't bother pouring shots, we can just swig straight from the bottle. It seems like the day for it", he explained. "Do you want me to go and distract the bridal party so that you can have a few more minutes with her or is this a crisis that I can talk you down from?" he asked. "Ollie, I love you but that's just your anxiety talking. You've been with her for two years now and that woman is /crazy/ about you. Getting married isn't going to suddenly turn you into a different person or turn you into an asshole, which means that your relationship will be just as special and wonderful as it always is".
"Always gotta splurge on good liquor. The cheap shit doesn't do anything for me anymore." Ollie added as Noah walked over to grab the bottle. Nodding in agreement by his next statement, he easily took the bottle and brought it up to his lips, taking a big swig from it. "Yup, definitely not cheap." He chuckled before passing the bottle back. "No, I don't want to stress her out thinking I have cold feet. I just need to shake this feeling." The man found that he was speaking more to himself than to the other male as he thought out loud. "Yeah but - what if I can't give her what she really wants? Or needs? What if one day she finally comes to her senses and realizes that I'm not..." He trailed off, shaking his head at the thought as he grabbed the bottle back from his best man. "I'm just freaked out. I can't go through another loss, not after I got myself this far."
"Such a connoisseur", Noah teased as he took the bottle from Ollie, taking a small swig before handing it back over. He had promised that he would remain sober until after the speeches so he intended to talk Ollie through this moment without getting wasted. "It doesn't sound like good feet, more anxiety that you might somehow mess this up or lose it", he said quietly, summarising how Ollie was feeling to make sure that they were both on the same page. "Oliver James, I've had the privilege for knowing your fiancé for a long time now; from before the two of you were even a couple. I can say with confidence that I've never seen her happier than when she's with you. I know that you can struggle to see your good qualities but Lola seems them all. You've been giving her everything that she wants and needs for a long time now so please don't let your own anxiety and insecurities trick you into losing the best thing in your life". He paused for a second, collecting his thoughts before speaking again. "I obviously can't promise that you'll never experience another loss again but if you walk away today, if you allow this brief moment of panic to trip you up... well, I think that's the choice that's most likely to lead to another loss. I don't know many relationships that would survive being left at the altar"
Ollie easily took back the bottle from Noah, taking another big swig of the bitter liquid; a content sigh escaping his lips at the feeling of the burning sensation down his throat. He simply just nodded as the other clarified his feelings; he knew that he wasn't getting cold feet, more so that he was simply scared of repeating the tragic history of his parents. "I never understood why she views me so highly, or how she can be so patient." He simply admitted as he took another swig from the bottle. "You're right, I know that. It's just when I think about marriage, I automatically think of my parents. Not that it's a bad thing, because from what I know what they had was good, and real but..." He trailed off, his breath hitching for a moment as he began unlocking that part of his life. "Marriage comes with the concept of settling down and getting comfortable with your life. It comes with a home, and it's the hardest to run away from. I've always told myself that I wouldn't do that again - that I wouldn't get comfortable or settle anywhere, even when we first got out together. I want this more than anything; she's my best friend and the person who understands me more than anyone...but she also scares me more than anyone." He rambled on for a few moments, thinking more out loud as he attempted to distinguish what he was truly in fear of. "I'm not going to leave her at the alter, I would never do that to her. I just need to shake this feeling in," He looked at his watch, his eyes going wide at how fast the time was passing. "A half hour. Holy shit."
Noah definitely felt relieved when Ollie confirmed that it wasn't cold feet, rather anxiety that he wasn't going to be enough for Lola; and fear that things might end tragically between them. "That's because you don't see yourself accurately, Ollie. Lola... she's madly in love with you. She knows that you're the right person for her. I've seen some of her past relationships and then I've seen her with you and god, it's so obvious that the two of you are right for each other. She loves you because you understand her better than anyone else ever has. You accept her, support her, respect her, love her for her flaws and her strength. You make her laugh, you make her feel safe, she trusts you. She's told me more than once that you're literally her favourite person on this earth. I'm sure the hot sex and great orgasms are just an added bonus on top of all that emotional shit", Noah said, unable to resist slipping in a light-hearted attempt at a joke at the end. "I get that. You know who else gets that? Lola. From what I understand, her parents had a good marriage and then her dad died and her mother basically abandoned her and started a whole new family; icing Lola out completely until she died too. She understands that taking a chance on people, on letting them into your life, is terrifying. She just knows that you're worth that investment and risk, just like you know that she's worth it too". People gave Noah a lot of shit about being a "good time guy" but when the situation called for it, he was able to buckle down and be serious to help his friends. "Alright, we're not going to spend the next 30 minutes drinking because I refuse to let you be fucking wasted when you marry the love of your life. Want to get some air? I think I can sneak you out of here without anyone noticing, we can go for a walk or something".

Since you like my alt-Marauders (WHICH IM SO HAPPY FOR) how about challenge for headcanons of them interacting with the Smashers, as allies or foes or just a chance encounter? No need to, I just thought it might be something you'd have fun with!
@thecorteztwins k I'm suddenly in a big writing mood so!! FINALLY getting around to this I'm so sorry sksksk
For anyone who doesn't know: Thecorteztwins has an amazing au where she's collected Haven (thicc angel lady who was possessed by a demon disguised as a baby), Claudine (Miss Sinister),Madelyne (clone of Jean Grey), Pyro, Sebastian Shaw, Shinobi Shaw and sometimes Alice (a clone being tested by Claudine)!
I feel like the first few days are really testy. Everyone's got some bone to pick, the usual. But the biggest thing? The name. A brief encounter with paparazzi ends with their name and the reactions go from Pyro and Claudine scoffing at how silly it sounds and what a rip off it is (Pyro being a writer?? U KNOW he wouldn't stand for Alt Marauders) to Shaw sighing about the fact that he's been stuck on a team with a cliche super nickname.
Then there's personal names because once again, Pryo and Shinobi both agree that everyone needs a name to reapply make them unique! Hardly anyone goes for it, ranging from Haven's soft "no thank you" to Shaw punting Pyro into a wall. Madelyne is slightly soft for Pyro's RPG themed alias ideas for her and less than impressed for Shinobi's idea of "Mad Milf".
Alice....I'm definitely thinking she gets nicknamed "White Rabbit" or "Wonderland" because; 1) no one can leave her out of getting a name. 2) Pyro 100% would give a cheesy media related name and 3) I like the very small connections of white rabbit to the white and red queens in Alice in Wonderland (and 4) rabbits always get experimented on :).
Gamma Gals having amazing duos with the ladies of the Marauders? Absolutely!!
Jen and Haven, being an amazing duo and I feel like they'd be the two who would have that issue where they're the only ones who can save the day and end up learning a lot from each other? Haven is probably thanking her stars that she finally gets to meet a hero who believes in her kindness just as much as she does (S H A W).
Just....Haven being able to meet an even bigger woman and trading stories and being GalPals(TM). Its a really interesting concept to me that Haven is someone who was deliberately used to destroy and Jen is someone who's entire identity is formed around smashing and destruction. It's probably rather cathartic to be working with someone who purely doesn't want to resort to violence immediately and who has been used (Haven by her demon and Jen by different people).
But also learning something from each other? Haven being able to see that sometimes you do need to fight for what you love and Haven proves to Jen that even after all this time, it isn't the muscle or power that can save everything, it's her and her drive and will alone. Catch Red and Shaw scoffing about it.
Speaking of, those two could either REALLY clash or really get along, no imbetweens. Have we found another old man for Shaw to wrestle with, Roman style??? (Ngl that would be hot in a sick way)
Skaar and Shinobi? Both long haired, beautiful, sons of big figures, grew up in abusive environments,,,,its a duo. Just put Shinobi into a mini team with Skaar and Daken and we have the "Black haired brood squad"
Rick and Pyro working together to have a joint production??? FIrebomb productions baby!! My podcast ideas? Absolutely would happen when you combine these two and its hell. Aka; Rick and Pyro gossip on their podcast and give advice to starting heroes as immortals and smack talk. But also outside of that I imagine they can get along a lot in the "had a hard time accepting stuff" and "we were heroes who often did a lot for others and got disregarded and hurt for it".
Pyro: Hey if I set you on fire can you become a flaming bowling ball
Rick: well let's fine out!!
Red and Shaw....there's a lot there. Both are old men who have been pressed on in their lives and affected by masculine presences in their lives...both are regarded as awful shitbags but they're both MUCH more complex and driven by a need for power and stability...lots of thoughts here.
Shaw and Red are one team you do NOT wanna mess with because two old men who are perfectly willing to do what's needed? Red can respect a man willing to get his hands dirty with clear means and Shaw can probably like a guy who has the drive to do what he believes is the better good. Also big hulk man who can give you endless power.
But also differences in them because Shaw abused and continues to abuse Shinobi while Red neglected and most likely emotionally abused Betty but it seemingly trying to make a difference in it now that she's come back? I feel like these two probably have a SUPER in depth conversation when forced to or alone and then never speak about it again.
Spending of Betty! Her and Madelyne?? What a DUO they're litreally a great mix because Maddie is a clone of Jean, Betty was assumed to be a clone at first and often has to suffer being the "domintrix" she hulk. Both have serious issues with their mental health and identities as well as dealing with their lives being ruled or devoted to men who ruin them. Both want freedom and have such passion! I just....so much to say about these two and the similarities. They're both red.
But yeah Phoenix and Harpy?? Skksks Maddie voice: I'm FIRE HARPY nOW
Am I still yelling for her hero name to be Griffin because of how mystical they are and being a bird and lion??? Yeah.
Also sad thoughts but,,,gals talking about their lost kids (Maddie with Nate and Betty suffered a miscarriage induced from stress), the stress of their lovers and who they've lost to (Jean, Emma, Caiera, Jarella,,,) and being manipulated by men for their power (Maddie by Sinister into Goblyn queen and Betty by Leader into Red She-hulk, Harpy, both died).
Anyway point is I can fully see them two just CLICKING or fighting a lot at first until someone points out just how similar they are. Then? Maddie and Betty out here being the brand new Thelma and Louise. Red and Black styles, willing to use force but protect the innocent, both take Alice and this cute kid that Betty absolutely mother henned in her run and,,,two moms and their talented daughters pls step out the way sir.
Tbh I don't think I have much for Samuel apart form him having a small crush on Claudine (and like,,,,not in That Sense, but Samuel does have a big history of falling for smart women or just...OP women). And then a series of gags where Haven wants to know him because he's like Shaw but also incredibly different in thinking and everytime she walks into the room,,,,Samuel is doing some horrific experiment and she just NOPES OUT. Shaw wants to make use of this but it goes horribly wrong oh God why did he try.
Lyra! I just....feel like there could be a lot for her and Claudine and Alice. Lyra was genetically engineered to be used in a war and was bullied relentlessly for being "half man" which...is rather transphobic and sexist but that's her storyline and it's too deeply embedded for me to headcanon over it so...sighs.
But yeah!!! Lyra taking Alice and giving her a night of being able to just....be whoever that night, not being pressured to have an identity of the sorts from anyone and just being able to fight people with a giant green woman. Probably has a lot of deep talks later that night with Lyra, sitting over a building and eating ice cream because it was one of the first things Bruce shared with her and a first realisation that Lyra could be more than someone's daughter.
100% would picture this with Carmilla (Lyra's sister and...also messy kinda clone) or Laura Kinney hopping along and!! Clone weapon woman team!! I could GET INTO this!!! Just...pls marvel give me a team of women overcoming abuse and forming identities among each other and cool women,,,,
But also Lyra admittedly would respect Claudine for her skills and her...tenacity? Yeah, that. She has strength and guts and Lyra probably actually tells her that she'd rather get experimented on by Miss Sinister than some pig of a man and Claudine just "thhhanks?"
Hulk,,,,funny enough I don't think I have many ideas for him yet? Probably gets into a fair few fights with Shaw and Haven over different stuff, Maddie has a bome to pick for Betty,,,I am,,,blank.
I feel like a lot of things for him would be Haven trying to break through into him, maybe each of the Marauders dealing with different parts of the system? I can imagine Shinobi and Pyro don't have a high opinion of the oversized dad until Bruce turns super ashen pale and immediately Joe starts yelling for some whisky and GIRLS....and a fella or two for matchstick and ghost baby here.
Maddie thinking that he's another Scott and then finding out that Hulk's thing is more complicated than Scott simply looking for Jean again. Also Maddie demands that she will forcefully adopt Hulk's kids and these two bonding over abusive dads???
But uh,,,that's about it!! Hope you liked it!!! I probably could easily delve into more thoughts if there's anything specific for me to set my mind on.

FIRST CHAPTER || PREVIOUS CHAPTER || NEXT CHAPTER
Credit for super friggin’ cute and super friggin’ amazing cover art goes to the super friggin’ talented ky-jane here on tumblr!
Tumblr media
It’s times like these that I really do wonder which is more nerve-racking: being thrust into a social interaction unwillingly with a whole bunch of people? Or unwittingly with just one single, solitary person?
With the large group, it was definitely and without a doubt overwhelming. Just finding the strength alone to speak up and join in the conversation was a skill that still escaped me. And even if you did manage to get so much as two words out, that meant all eyes were suddenly on you. What if you talked too much? Or too little? What if you forgot what you were saying at all? Or worse, what if you said something stupid? What if you embarrassed yourself so bad that there’d be no showing your face ever again in the light of day, much less to another human being?
Which, if I’m being totally honest, I would probably find kind of amazing.
Hermit for life, yo.
But then, there were also advantages to the crowd. The biggest one being that an antisocial, cave-dwelling troll like me? More often than not could get away with saying nothing at all. Everyone else could handle all the chit-chat while I simply faded into the background and soaked up the ambiance. That way, I could just make an appearance and give the illusion of being socially active without actually being socially active.
One-on-one exchanges, on the other hand? Now those were a whole other beast. No, make that whole other species.
There was no fading into the background here. There wasn’t even a background to fade into. All there was was you and the other person. A person you were expected to carry half of the conversation with. When put on the spot like that with someone I barely knew, forget having a back-and-forth dialogue like a normal and well-adjusted friggin’ adult, I was lucky if I got anything out of my mouth more sophisticated than “uh” or “um.” Then there were the awkward silences where I’d frantically try to come up with something, anything to say only to have my useless lump of a brain play possum and draw a total blank. I died a thousand and one deaths in those damn silences.
And okay, sure, this was Lea we were talking about. An individual who by now I’d shockingly, and on more than one occasion no less, made reasonably successful small talk with. But a few minutes of a lunch break here or some brief, friendly banter while I was taking his order as my customer there was completely different than now finding myself alone with him in a booth at some random pub on a Friday night.
And besides, it was Lea. Lea, who I’d seen shirtless and slathered in ice cream. Lea, whose lips my lips had thrown themselves at within the first five minutes of meeting him. Lea, who-
Damn it, brain, really? Was now really the best time to be playing the highlight reel of Elsa’s Greatest Embarrassing Hits?
Needless to say?
I.
Was.
Terrified.
Anna Fryse, if you could please report to the table in the back right corner, your older sister is waiting for you and is in desperate need of someone to hide behind right about now.
Also, Anna, if you were ever planning on developing the ability to psychically read thoughts, particularly mine, now would be the time to do it.
...of course, for her to hear that message, she’d need to already be psychic.
And if she was, that meant she was ignoring me.
Which she totally would do.
Brat.
Checking back into reality momentarily, it was in this second that it came to my attention that I was staring at Lea without realizing it. Well now I realized it. Particularly because he was looking back at me with a smile. My heart flatlined, my face paled and my eyes darted away.
Oh god, I had been staring. Did he know I’d been staring? ...of course he did, Elsa you dope! That’s generally what two people do when they're sitting together at a table talking.
Talking. Right. That was a thing I should be doing.
Alright, brain, I know you’re doing your best impersonation of the sound of a mime convention in there right now, but I’m going to need you to work with me here. Think of a word. Any word. Just something to get the conversation rolling. Oh yes. I can feel it. Here it comes. And that word is…
Flamingo.
...seriously, brain? Hadn’t we already said all that there was to say on the subject of flamingos earlier during the little palm notes debacle? Need we bring that back up again? I mean, I do see where you’re coming from - once you ask a man what he does in his flamingo, what else more is there to discuss with him, really? Might as well just-
“Fabracadabra?”
Lea’s voice broke through my thoughts, drawing my eyes back to him.
Wow. Now that was a really good word.
Way better than my lame word. Pssh, flamingo? What was that even about?
Wait… his word was also the name of another one of our ice cream flavors.
He took a swig from his ale as he studied me for a second, cocking his head before at last shaking it. “Nope. Too fruity sweet. You’re the type o’ gal who likes something with a lil more...” he clicked his teeth together with a smirk, “...bite to it.”
I blinked, some of my tension relaxing. Then my lips were doing something strange. Was it that crazy thing all the kids were doing nowadays, what’s it called? I believe the term was… grinning? “You’re… still trying to guess which one is my favorite?”
“Just you wait and see,” he scooched around the booth to sit closer to me, sliding the Ifrit bottle along the table with him, “I’m gonna get it. Mark my word.”
Turning my head slightly, I gave him some side-eye. “...you seem pretty sure of yourself.”
“With good reason! I’m twelve-and-oh, baby. Haven’t been wrong yet. Trust me, your top pick off the Ice Palace menu is as good as called.”
“Who ever said it was an Ice Palace signature flavor?”
His head rocked back at that, then he narrowed his eyes, “You play dirty.”
I hid a smile behind my fingers. “Want a hint?”
“Nah,” he leaned back, propping his elbows on the high back rim of the booth and stretching his long legs out under the table, crossed at the ankles. “Hints are for game show contestants and lame-os who lack self-confidence.”
“And you certainly have no shortage of confidence.”
He beamed, closing his eyes. “Nope! Who has two thumbs and is one cocky ass mofo?” Said two thumbs pointed at himself. “This guy.”
A soft snort escaped me and I shook my head. “No doubt about that,” I murmured as I looked away.
You know what? Maybe this wasn’t going to be so bad afterall. Actually, it was turning out kind of... nice.
My gaze settled on Anna and Kristoff out there. It was all the poor boy could do to keep up with my sister on the dance floor. She even tossed him out into a spin at one point, much to his surprise if the face he made was any clue. But he seemed to be coming around to the whole experience. It even looked like he might be, dare I say it, having fun. They both did. Watching the two of them had me feeling an upward tug at one corner of my lips.
“So how ‘bout it?” I heard Lea ask.
I looked back at him, quirking an eyebrow. “How about what?”
His eyes crinkled as he nodded towards an open spot out in the middle of the pub. “Wanna dance?”
Cue sound of shattering glass.
“Ack! My drink!” Rayne yelped from the booth behind me. “Sorry, I’ll pay to replace the cup!”
As for me? I’d choked. On what? My heart launching itself up into my throat would be my guess.
“W-with you?” my mouth blurted out without consulting me first.
“No, with Grand High King Fuddy-Duddy over there sporting the scar,” he tapped a finger to the bridge of his nose, rolling his eyes. “Yeah, with me.”
Why? Why would he ask-? What could he possibly be- Oh! Oh I get it now! He was just being nice! Yeah, that had to be it. He just wanted to make sure I had fun tonight. That I felt included. He was being a good friend. He really was a very sweet guy.
But me? Dance with Lea? Me? Who cowered and fled at the first sign of any form of human contact? Nope. Couldn’t do it. Quite simply no way, no how. Dancing with Lea meant I’d have to get close to him. That I’d have to touch him. Er… not to say that there was anything wrong with touching him! I mean, it actually might be quite pleasant to-
Wait, what?
Uh… let’s just put a pin in that wayward thought there and come back to it later, like say, oh I don’t know… never. In the meantime, Lea was still waiting on my answer.
I opened my mouth to give it.
All that came out was a squeak.
...let’s try that again, shall we?
Clearing my throat and snatching a wisp of my hair to tangle around my fingers, I at last got out a hasty, “No, I don’t think so.”
Was that harsh? It sounded harsh. Ugh, this is why I don’t do people!
He tsked and sighed. “It’s cuz I’m ugly, isn’t it?”
“What?!” I blanched before quickly shaking my head. “No! No, no, no! That’s not it! Not because you’re ugly! I mean, you’re not! Ugly, that is! Not at all! Far from it, you’re very-” I slapped both hands over my mouth, face roasting.
Shut up. Shut up right now.
I watched him bend forward, planting one elbow on the table and chin in his palm as he now eyed me with a wide, cheshire grin. “Do go on, I’m all ears. I’m very…?”
Oh this smug, son of a…
My eyelids drooped and I lowered my hands. “...very manipulative in fishing for compliments.”
“Guilty,” he snerked, leaning back once more and slouching a bit into the cushions. His grin twitched wider, “So, that’s a hard no then?”
I couldn’t help a tiny smile of my own. “Sorry. I... just don’t dance.”
“No worries. Figured you might say something like that. But couldn’t pass up the chance to ask either,” he winked, taking another sip of his drink. Then he paused, pursing his lips to one side and rubbing the nape of his neck. “...so what is your story anyway?”
Brow furrowing, I asked, “My story?”
He struck up a finger, “You’re twenty-two. Fresh outta college. Guessing Ivy League no less just by the look of you, but total shot in the dark there. And you just got your first job… in a mall food court. Which, ya know, absolutely nothing wrong with that, but it’s the type of gig that only teens, university students, and college dropouts go for. Take it from me, a dropout twice over now, but back at it again for round three hoping it sticks this time,” up the hand went again, now with index and middle digits crossed.
“Why didn’t it the first couple times?” my head tipped to one side.
Who, me? Trying to take focus off myself? Deflecting? Psssh, I would never!
He splayed a hand out over his chest, “Believe it or not, I wasn’t always the well-adjusted, level-headed and responsible individual that you see before you today.”
“Really?” I snorted, squinting at him. “Is that what I’m seeing before me? I hadn’t realized.”
“Shush, you. Trust me, six, seven years ago? I was a real punkass troublemaker. The kind of boy you don’t bring home to your parents, all about the sex, drugs and rock-n-roll scene, ya know? That whole college thing sounded lame to me, but all my friends were doing it, so figured hell,” he shrugged, “why not give it a shot? But me and college didn’t really play well together. I didn’t take it seriously, not really. So eventually decided it wasn’t for me and kicked it to the curb. Few years later? Thought myself older, wiser, ready to give the big ol’ four years and a diploma deal a second chance. But I was just fooling myself, I hadn’t changed one bit. Wasn’t long before we were parting ways once again.”
I folded my arms on the table, “So what’s changed? Why is try number three going to be different?”
Lea frowned up at the ceiling. “I guess you just hit a point in your life when you realize you don’t want to be slinging pizza dough at minimum wage forever. Even a screwup like me’s got dreams. Nothing too fancy... just maybe something like owning and operating my own place. Maybe a lil ice cream parlour by the beach, a real mom and pop kind of store.
“Ah, it’s silly,” he chuckled, shaking his head, “but either way, I know jackshit about running a business. And that’s why I’m back to hitting those books once again and this time I’m doing my damnedest to hammer some knowledge into this thick skull of mine,” he pointed to his temple. “I’ve really buckled down and, uh…” his eyes darted away, “...shall we say, kicked some old habits.”
“You sound like you really want to make it work this time.” I propped one elbow next to the Shiva, leaning my cheek into my hand. “I haven’t known you that long, but based on what I do know about you, I’m guessing there isn’t much you can’t do once you’ve really set your mind to it.”
“Thanks!” he laughed. Then his smile turned a shade wry, “Don’t think I didn’t notice you trying to change the subject on me.”
...fudge.
He went on, “You got my story, now I’d love to hear yours.”
“I told you already,” I frowned, my hands reaching for a napkin to start twisting between them. “My, er… my major didn’t work out. This job… it’s temporary and-”
Lea cut me off with a wave of his hand, “Yeah, yeah, I know what ya said. I’m more interested in what wasn’t said.”
I grimaced, my fingers strangling the poor paper napkin harder. “It’s… a long story.”
“I got time. Loads of it. Only if you want to talk about it though. No pressure, it just looks like you need it.”
Did I? What was that supposed to mean anyway? “...It’s kind of personal. I’m not even sure if it’s something I really should be talking about.”
His forehead wrinkled. “What, like it’s a secret?” Then his face brightened. “I love a good secret! Okay, how about this. Let’s do a trade. I’ll give you one of my secrets, you give me one of yours. Could be anything, big or small, just whatever you want.”
I blinked at him.
Apparently, he took that as a yes, for now he was hunching forward, bringing his face closer to mine and whispering, “So here’s one that only one other person knows and only cuz he’s known me since he and I were in diapers. Not even the kiddos are in on it. Okay, so, my first name?” He gave one more quick glance around to make sure the coast was clear before lowering his voice even further, “Not actually Lea.”
My eyebrows knit together. “It’s not?”
“Nope,” he shook his head. “Middle name. Go by it cuz I hate my first name.”
“Which is?”
His face pinched. “Axel.”
“...Axel,” I repeated flatly, one eyebrow arching.
“Yup. Apparently, my folks were total diehards for Guns n’ Roses. But the real kicker? The couple o’ useless junkies that gave me life were apparently too high off whatever drug o’ the week they were on to even make sure the name was spelled right on the birth certificate. So instead of having a rockstar singer for a namesake, I’m named after a goddamn skateboard trick all thanks to one stupid E that wasn’t s’posed to be there,” he grumbled, throwing himself back into his seat and slumping down, crossing his arms.
I just stared at him for a second, silence stretching. Then I spluttered and burst out in laughter, trying to smother it behind my hands.
“Wow, rude much?” he deadpanned.
“I’m sorry, I really am! It’s just, with the name and that whole story and your pout…” Oh gosh, that pout! I thought he was supposed to be twenty-five, not five. Still giggling but sobering somewhat, I continued, “I just couldn’t help myself. I really am sorry though, I know I shouldn’t have found it funny.”
“Bah, it’s fine,” he brushed off with a grin. “I’ve had my whole life to get over it and yeah, it’s a lil funny. But now it’s your turn, Missy. Gimme a secret. Anything’ll do. And don’t worry, I’ll be a lot nicer about it than some insensitive clods at the table,” he gave me a pointed look, smirk still in place to show he was only teasing.
Oh. Right. That. I’d almost forgotten. Though technically, I’d never agreed to anything. Then again, he did just kind of bare his soul to me. And I did just kind of ridicule him when he did. So maybe… in a way, I sort of owed it to him?
“I…” My voice wavered as I hesitated, hands mangling the napkin again. I gnawed my lower lip, looking down, hearing the thudding in my ribcage get louder. Finally, I squeezed my eyes shut and opened my mouth, not fully sure what was going to come out. “My parents… have no idea where I am right now. They haven’t for a while.”
His eyes widened slightly at that. Whatever he’d be expecting, apparently it hadn’t been that.
Hey, same boat here, buddy.
“Oh… I see,” was all he said at first, taking another slow pull from his drink now as he turned this new little tidbit over in his head.
And that wasn’t even the half of it. I hadn’t mentioned the type of family I was from. Or that’d I’d been in a relationship, no, engaged with a fiancé. Or that’d I’d left him at the altar on my wedding day. Or that when I had, I’d made the split second decision to abandon the only existence I’d ever known and was now stumbling through life with absolutely zero clue as to what the frick I was actually doing.
...yeah, that would have been a lot. Perhaps a bit too much for sharing time. I think I’d made the right call with dropping only this one tiny piece of the puzzle. At least for now. And who knows? He seemed pretty perceptive, maybe it’d be enough for him to read between the lines and answer some of his questions about me. Then again, maybe not.
At last he leaned forwarded onto his elbows, one arm tucked behind the other, and said, “Alright, I’m gonna take a crack at this and you can let me know if I’m right. Or not. You don’t even have to say jackshit, you can just let me blather on like the big lunkhead that I am who likes the sound of his own voice too much, which I’m used to so no worries, totally your call.” He paused, steepling his fingers to his lips as he seemingly gathered his thoughts. Then, “Up ‘til now, I’m guessing you’ve probably led a pretty sheltered life. One where you were maybe used to having all the decisions made for you. But then, for whatever reason or other, you recently decided to cut the cord. So now you find yourself out in the big, bad world that no one really prepared you for, scrambling to find a foothold, scared shitless and just trying to figure out what the hell to do with yourself, let alone with your future.”
Holy… how on earth did he…?
Swallowing hard, I fiddled with the straw in my cocktail and mumbled, “Wow, you are good. Ever consider becoming one of those windup psychics in a box that spits out fortunes on little cards?”
He snorted. “Sure did, but was too dang tall to fit into the glass case. Too bad, those lil dudes have it made.” Then he tilted his head. “...want some unsolicited advice?”
I shrugged, now absently stirring the blue liquid of my drink. “Sure, why not.”
“Get out there. Explore. Try new things. Right now, I’m guessing your worldview is very small, so you need to expand it. It’s the only way you’ll figure out what to make of your life. Cuz as glamorous as it is, I suspect you’re like me and don’t exactly want to be working the food court all the way up into your golden years.”
Now I looked up at him, a crease forming between my eyebrows. “...are you telling me to get out of my comfort zone?”
Lea chuckled, scratching his cheek, “Sure, I guess that’d be one of way of putting it.”
“That’s actually something I’ve been hearing a lot lately,” I sighed, sinking further down into my seat. Sure, it sounded good in theory. But in practice? Easier said than done. “...any suggestions on where to start?”
He gave a low hum, rubbing a curled knuckle to his chin. Then his eyes lit up and he snapped his fingers. “Got just the thing! Be back in a jiff!” Then he sprung up to his feet, one hand on top the table to catapult himself over it and out the booth. As soon as his shoes hit the floor, he raced off, disappearing into the bar crowd.
...okay?
Should I be afraid? Yes, I think I should be afraid. Very, very afraid.
My eyes squinted, scanning the crush of soberly-challenged people out there, searching for that distinctive fiery head of hair. Should have been easy given Lea was a living embodiment of Mount Fuji, but even so, I was having trouble spotting him.
A sudden blur darted out of the throng and landed hard on the cushion beside me, crashing into my side and distracting me from my hunt.
Said blur was Anna. Surprise, surprise.
“Whew!” she puffed out happily, sweating and fanning herself with one hand while the other crammed fries into her mouth. “That boy… Kristoff, was it? Man oh man, would he be in trouble if I didn’t already have a boyfriend!”
Both eyebrows shot up my forehead.  “Boyfriend?” That was news to me. “Since when?”
She froze mid-bite, shoulders stiffening and eyes going round. Then she snatched up her drink, slurping it down as her eyes shifted rapidly about. Then with a loud gulp, she at last let out a weak laugh, “It, uh… it’s new! Yeah, we… met… at the wedding! Sorry I didn’t tell you, I just didn’t want to say anything because I, er… felt bad! With, ya know, your love life all in the toilet and the bombed engagement and whatnot, so… heh…”
“Oh,” I averted my gaze with a tiny frown. At the wedding, huh? Was it someone from his side of the family? Or maybe a friend of his? Regardless, it didn’t really matter I supposed. I directed a soft smile her way, “I’m fine, really. There was no need for you to hold back. You know you can always tell me anything.”
“I know that!” she laughed, flicking one hand dismissively. “But please, it’s me. I have a new beau like every other week, so it’s hardly anything to stop the presses over! No, the real scoop here is what’s the deal with you and Lea? I wanna know everything!”
“Lea?” I creased my brow, making another quick visual sweep for the guy in question. Still no dice, but I did see Yuffie across the way playing a game of Darts with Meg and Terra. Though… could it still really be called Darts when the projectiles being used were more of those little ninja stars? Either way, it came as little to no shock when next a scowling Leon could be glimpsed making a beeline for the trio. “What about Lea?”
“Don’t play coy! I saw you two getting all cozy-like in this booth here all by yourselves just a minute ago!” her eyebrows waggled.
I scoffed. “There was nothing cozy about it. We were just talking.”
“And smiling. Like, a lot.”
“So? People smile when they talk.”
Anna rolled her eyes. “Yeah, people. You don’t. Except for with me and Ray-Ray.  Plus,” and here she got in my face, jabbed a finger into my collarbone and paused with all the drama of Sherlock Holmes about to reveal the key piece of evidence at the climax of an epic murder mystery.  “...you laughed.”
Eyelids drooping, I grumbled, “I laugh all the time.”
“Nu-uh! And not like this, you don’t! Gawd, it’s been… I don’t even know how long since I heard a noise like that out of you. You can’t fool me, there’s definitely something between you two. A… a spark!”
A half groan, half huff escaped me. Anna was always like this. She’d binged one too many romantic comedies in her as of yet short existence on this earth. I’d been considering telling her about the Kissident, but now? Bad idea. Like, in all the history of bad ideas, it would just be the absolute worst. She’d have a field day with that one. Better to keep it on the hush-hush for the time being. “There is no spark! There’s not even a… a flicker! Or a glimmer! Or a glint! Not even a fizzle, okay? We’re just friends. Besides, I just broke up with a fiancé not even a month ago, so alleged sparks are the furthest thing from my mind, understand?
“Methinks the lady doth protest too much,” she slyly brought the Golden Chocobo back up to her lips.
Eyes narrowing dangerously, I cracked my knuckles, “Methinks if the little sister doth enjoy breathing, she’ll knoweth when to zip it.”
“Methinks the little sister is zipping it forthwith!” Anna chirped with a two finger salute. There was a lull as she plucked another fry to give it a nibble. Then, “Sis, can I just tell you how amazing this is?”
My head dipped to one side. “What is?”
“This!” Her arms spread out wide before bringing both hands in to gesture at me, “You! Being out in the real world! Making it on your own! Meeting new people! Having a job! All of it! You’re different! It’s a good different! And this is just the start too, I can already see it, you’re gonna do great things. I’m so proud of you,” she cooed, pinching my cheek.
I swat her hand away, “Great things? Please, Anna… I scoop ice cream at a mall.”
“Yeah, for now! But that alone was a huge step for you. I mean, c’mon, if someone had told you a year ago that you’d be out from under Mom and Dad’s tyrannical thumbs and doing the whole independent thing, you’d probably would’ve just thought that person was spouting crazy talk.”
“I suppose that’s true,” I murmured, feeling the hint of a grin pulling at one side of my mouth. “I guess… I never knew what I was really capable of.”
“Well, now you’ve had just the kick in the rear you needed to find out!” Her smirk then slowly faded into a tiny grimace. “Listen… I’m so sorry about what happened. If I’d known how unhappy you were, I never would’ve let you get all the way up to the day of wedding bells before-”
“No, it’s okay. You don’t have to apologize,” I shook my head, putting my hand on top of hers. “It wasn’t your job to save me, it was mine. I just… should have done something about it sooner. Then maybe things wouldn’t be the disaster zone I imagine they are now back at home,” I puffed out a heavy sigh.
Anna laughed, “You got that right! Mom and Dad? Still hella pissed! So any thoughts on when you’re gonna talk to them?” I winced, looking away. She hastily tacked on, “No rush or anything! And you don’t have to worry about me spilling the beans to them either about where you’re laying low! Take all the time you need. I just think-”
“Sorry to interrupt ladies!” We both jumped slightly in our seats as Lea made a sudden reappearance, skidding to a stop beside our table, eyes bright and ear-to-ear grin splitting his face in two. “But I’m gonna need to borrow El here for a minute!”
“Of course!” Anna giggled, standing up from the booth to clear a path out for me. “She’s all yours!”
Um… excuse me?
Don’t I get a say in this?
“Thank you!” he singsonged before snatching my hands in his and yanking me up out of the booth and onto my feet. “Come on, we’re up next!”
Up? Up where?
He started to turn but stopped, tapping a finger to his pursed lips. Then the smile was back with a vengeance as he picked up the Shiva and shoved it into my hand. “Lil liquid courage never hurt!” he gave a firm nod before taking my other hand in his once again and sprinting off, me doing my best not to spill the drink as I stumbled and tripped after him.
I had a bad feeling about this.
“Where are we going?” I called out as we weaved a path through the crush of people, ignoring the soft, weird buzz I was feeling where my fingers were interlaced with his.
Not breaking stride, he turned his head just enough to glance at me out of the corner of his gaze, eyes crinkled. “You’ll see.”
My bad feeling now had an added side of gut-wrenching dread thrown in on the house.
Particularly because I was pretty sure we were heading straight for the-
“Next up on the karaoke stage,” a female voice suddenly rang out over the speakers high above while the music coming from the jukebox faded away, “we have Elsa and Lea here to sing a duet for us! Please welcome them with a round of applause, everyone!”
The room erupted in cheers and clapping as we at last broke out of the dense crowd to find ourselves directly in front of the stage.
Aka my worst nightmare.
Well… at least at the moment.
My nightmares had a tendency to pass around the highly coveted and sought after “Worst” title, depending on which one was most pressing at any given second of the day.
There wasn’t that much to it. The stage was made of dark, polished hardwood with maroon, heavy velvet curtains hanging behind it to decorate the back wall. There were a couple of stands for the cordless mics accompanied by a lone barstool between them. And of course, the karaoke machine itself, front and center with a large screen on top of it for displaying the lyrics. As a whole, it was almost deceptively innocent looking in its simplicity.
But I knew better.
I’m on to you, you miniature torture chamber cleverly disguised as fun for the whole family.
“Surprise!” Lea beamed down at me. Then another tug at my arm and I was staggering to keep up once more as he brought me around to one side of the stage and up its stairs. I tried to put on the brakes, but my legs had turned to jelly, rendering them useless. Instead, it was all I could to stammer and splutter as he chipperly explained, “So as far as available songs go, it was slim pickings when it came to duets, nothing but cheesy love songs. But I think I picked the best one of the bunch, super energetic, should be loads of fun and-”
“No!” I at last managed to get out, jerking my hand free, whirling on my heel and marching back down those steps at warp speed.
He was quick to follow, grab me by my shoulders, spin me back around and guide me up again, still with that stupid grin in place. “Aw, c’mon! You asked me for ideas on new things for you to try! So here you go!”
“Who says I haven’t done this before?” I hissed, feet now scraping across the stage as he slid me along it.
Lea snerked through his nose. “I took a wild guess.”
“That was awfully presumptuous of you.”
“So what, you telling me you’ve sung karaoke?”
“No, but that doesn’t make you any less presumptuous!”
We came to a stop now next to the mics. He stepped in front of me and bent down to my eye level, his hands still firmly gripping my upper arms to keep me from bolting. “Come on, El! Do it for me! As a favor to a friend!”
I shot him a deadpan look. “Fun fact: we’re no longer friends.”
“Since when?”
“Since ten seconds ago when you dragged me up here against my will.”
“Pfft, you don’t mean that,” he finally released me, ruffling my bangs and rolling his eyes before stepping over to the mics, unblocking my field of vision. That’s when I saw it.
All.
Those.
People.
Watching. Murmuring. Waiting. I’d already known the bar was packed, but now, up here, sensing every single last one of those eyes on me, the place seemed to be all but bursting. There were just… just so many! I-
Wait, was the crowd shrinking? And not as is thinning out, but were the people actually getting... smaller?
“Oof!” I wheezed out a surprised grunt as my back collided with something.
Oh.
That’d explain it.
Apparently without me even realizing it, my feet had taken it upon themselves to back me away from the edge of the stage, away from the people and straight into the curtained wall behind me. My hand started groping about, looking for the edge of said curtain, latching on when I found it and sweeping it out for me to hide behind. Everything went dark.
I am stealth.
A ghost.
A ninja.
Sneakiness personified.
Unseeable, unknowable, and-
The curtain whipped away and I winced as light returned, revealing Lea standing before me. He laughed, “There you are!”
I squeaked, grabbed the curtains and yanked them in front of me once more.
Now where was I? Ah, that’s right… ahem! Unseeable, un-
The velvet curtain flew to the side once more and Lea hooked his hand in my elbow, pulling me out and back towards the karaoke machine. “Trust me, you’ll be fine!  You got nothing to worry about! I’ll be there the whole time, hamming it up and just in general making a big idiot outta myself, so no one's even gonna be looking at you. All you gotta do is stand there and sing your parts when they come up, 'kay? Song’s super short too, so it’ll be over before ya know it!”
My lips parted to tell him exactly where he could take his “super short song” and stick it, but was interrupted by the spotlights suddenly flicking on. One zeroed in on Lea, the other blasted me like a paralyzing ray and I just stood there, eyes wide and unblinking, mouth hanging open and alcoholic beverage still in hand.
Another wave of applause went up for us as Lea tossed me a mic. Frozen stiff, I made no move to catch it, instead just watching it dumbly as it arced up through the air before streaking straight down in front of me to clatter against the stage. He snorted, bent down to pick it up and put it in my free hand, pressing my numb fingers to close around it before he moved to stand in front of the other mic.
My breathing was shallow, my heart was a jackhammer and my feet no longer seemed to work, now just glued to this spot.
Oh god, was this really happening?
 That’s when the music started.
Apparently, yes. Yes it was.
The tune was led in by a quirky, rubbery bassline and a playful piano. Wait… I knew this song. Yeah, it was from a musical. The one full of leather jackets, summer lovin’ and grease lightning. Musicals were a good thing. Musicals were a thing I knew. Kind of a guilty pleasure of mine. Used to sing along with them all when I was little. It could actually be considered kind of pathetic, the sheer percentage of my brain that was still to this day crammed full of all the words to famous Broadway hits.
All that said though… it did absolute friggin’ zilch to calm me down.
“I got chills, they’re multiplying,” Lea started off, dipping his mic stand dangerously low and giving it a wide sweep around before straightening back up and removing the mic from the base. He was no Travolta, but his voice actually wasn’t half bad. “And I’m losing control,” he sang on, spinning on one foot once, twice, three times before abruptly stopping to point at me with a smirk, working some hip action. “Cuz the power you’re supplying… it’s electrifying!” His whole body spasmed from head to toe as he fell to his knees then full on faceplanted at my feet, causing me to jolt back a step.
...hamming it up? Please, more like going whole hog! Jeez!
My part was coming up in about five seconds. I could hardly hear the music anymore over the thundering of my heart or the hiss of breath hyperventilating in and out of my nose. That’s when it happened again.
Everyone and everything around me was suddenly in slo-mo.
Man, I really needed to get a handle over my powers of time control!
It was in this uncanny second of my wildly burgeoning mutant ability (ha, if only) that I spotted them. Rayne and Anna, in the front row of the crowd with big smiles to root me on. As I locked eyes with one then the other, my sister gave me an excited nod of encouragement while my roommate was mouthing something to me. Couldn’t be sure, but it looked suspiciously like the words ‘comfort zone.’
Then I looked down at my hand holding the Shiva.
...liquid courage, huh?
...fine. Let’s do this.
Nostrils flaring, I raised the drink to my mouth, knocking back several gulps before slamming the glass down on top of the barstool. Still shaking, I jerked the mic up to my lips, knuckles white around the handle. Like a dam bursting, the words started flooding out before I could even think them. “You better shape up,” oh gosh, was that a quiver I heard in my voice? My free hand down by my hip clenched tightly. “Cuz I need a man, and my heart is set on you.”
Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed Lea still flat on the floor but now propped up on his elbows and gawking at me. I looked away, heat flooding my face. Come on now, I know it’d been a while since I last sang so I was rusty, but I couldn’t be that bad. Stubbornness flaring, I took a deep breath and continued, words stronger now, “You better shape up! You better understand to my heart I must be true…”
“Nothing left, nothing left for me to do,” Lea came back in with a fierce grin as he scrambled up onto his feet. “You’re the one that I want!” we both sang the chorus as he landed to my right, doing the iconic dance from the scene in the movie, with a thumb hooked in the waist of his pants and swinging his hips to and fro. “Oo-oo-oo, honey, the one that I want!” In a shuffling side-gallop, he passed by in front of me to my other side and repeated the move. “Oo-oo-oo, honey, the one that I want!” Again with the side-gallop, this time behind me, and again with the little jig. I was biting back a smile. Well, at least he was true to his word… he really was making a big idiot out of himself. It was getting harder to stay mad at him. Harder… but not impossible. “Oo-oo-oo, the one I need, oh yes indeed!”
Lea now moved several steps over to his side of the stage, giving me room as the song shifted in preparation for the second verse that I was going to be starting off. I tensed, spine ramrod straight as I recalled what the next lines out of my mouth were going to be. Feeling my blush creeping all the way down to my toes, I wrung the mic in both my hands now as I stiffly brought it back up and squeezed my eyes shut. “If you’re feeling affection,” I wasn’t here, I wasn’t me, “you’re too shy to convey.” No, I was Olivia Newton-John at the school carnival, oozing confidence in a smoking, skin-tight outfit showing off her killer bod. “Meditate in my direction.” Oof, the next part. How did Olivia pull off that breathy purr? Maybe something like, “Feel your way.”
Harsh feedback screeched through the speakers, making my eyes snap back open. Apparently it had come from Lea’s mic, which he was clumsily fumbling to keep from dropping it. Now having it firmly back in grip, he brought it back up in time to croak out, “I better shape up!” He cleared his throat, banging a fist to his chest and now looking a little red in the face. I guess all that prancing around must have been catching up to him. “Cuz you need a man…”
“I need a man who can keep me satisfied,” I sang back, quirking an eyebrow at him.
Whatever his malfunction had been, he was now bouncing back, face brightening as he ran into a knee-slide, stretching a hand up towards me, “I better shape up if I’m gonna prove-”
“You better prove,” I rolled my eyes and shook my head at his antics, “that my faith is justified.”
“Are you sure?” he asked, hopping back up before my voice joined with his, “Yes, I’m sure deep down inside! You’re the one that I want!” The chorus started again and Lea grabbed my hand, catching me off guard and twirling me into a spin. “Oo-oo-oo, honey, the one that I want!” Now he pulled me up against him, flashing me a cheeky grin as one hand wrapped around my waist and the other took hold of mine, mic sandwiched between them. “Oo-oo-oo, honey, the one that I want!” Unable to resist any longer, a laugh bubbled out of me as he swept us around in circles in time with the upbeat music, bringing his mic up between our lips whenever we needed to sing the next line. “Oo-oo-oo, the one I need, oh yes indeed!”
The chorus repeated a couple more times, Lea continuing to dance us about the stage the whole time. Once when I was able to catch a glimpse out into the audience, I even spotted Rayne and Anna busting a move themselves on top of one of the tables, Riku on the ground frantically gesturing for his wife to get down. When the song finally started to fade, the room erupted in applause and whistles. Lea released my waist, but didn’t let go of my hand, instead tugging me towards the edge of the stage. There he raised my arm up high before he bent into a flourishing bow for the adoring fans, pulling me down into one as well. As we both straightened back up, a smile tugged at my lips and I breathed a sigh of relief as my heart rate finally began to calm down.
I’d done it. I’d actually sung in front of all those people and lived to tell the tale.  And oddly, I was even... almost kind of giddy about it? It couldn’t be that I’d actually enjoyed that? No. No way. That was just the adrenaline talking as it still coursed through my body which was finally getting to relax now that the danger had passed. I was just happy it was over with! Yeah, that’s all it was. It had to be.
As the bar quieted down once more, Lea returned the mics to their holders before jumping down off the front of the stage and pivoting around to smirk up at me, “Damn, El, why didn’t you tell me you were packing a gorgeous set o’ pipes on you?”
There that blush was again, creeping back up my neck. I gave a soft harrumph, “Stop, I do n-”
I was startled into silence as he picked me up by the waist, my hands hastily going to his shoulders as he lowered me down off the stage and deposited me on the floor beside him.
Okay… so that happened.
“I’m serious!” he pulled his hands back, planting them on his own hips as he hunched forward slightly. “You’re trying to figure out what to do with your life, right? Well, I think we hit a ringer here! Ever consider being a singer?”
I turned my back on him with a snort and walked away, heading towards our booth. “Oh, sure. I’ll just have to hire professional wranglers to drag me kicking and screaming up to the mic for every performance.”
“Oh, c’mon, it wasn’t that bad, was it?” he caught up and fell into step beside me. “You had fun and really got into it, I could tell!”
Only because Lea had been distracting me the whole time. “It doesn’t matter either way, only fools try to make a career out of singing. Do you know how hard it is for most people to make it big in the music industry?”
“Yeah, but most people don’t have a voice like yours.”
I groaned, “Please, can we just drop it?”
“Fine, fine, dropping it,” he raised his hands in surrender.  Then, “So… are we friends again?”
I side-eyed him, wrinkling my nose. “...probationally.”
One corner of his mouth twitched upward and he slipped his hands into his pockets. “I’ll take it! And hey, at least something good came outta our lil musical adventure.”
I gave him a questioning look, to which he grinned wider.
“I got to dance with you after all.”

Author's Note: For those who don't know it, the song they sang is called "You're the One That I Want" from the musical "Grease" - a rather problematic musical at that (as I discovered from rewatching the movie while writing this chapter after not having seen the movie in over a decade) but I still love this song and you can pry it from my cold, dead hands xD Also I may or may not have watched 50 (thousand) youtube videos of couples singing this song at karaoke for IMPORTANT RESEARCH reasons before writing up this chapter. I must say, just simply writing the karaoke scene felt almost as mortifying as if I'd actually had to go up on stage and physically sing the damn song myself! I don't normally write songs lyric for lyric in my stories, but I just figured with what an anxious bundle of nerves Elsa is in this story, it was kind of important not to just gloss over and hand-wavy the karaoke. So yeah, I don't usually write singing scenes, but hopefully this one turned out halfway okay? Anyhoo, on another note, Elsa is a lot better at this whole holding-a-conversation thing than she gives herself credit for… once she gets over her crippling anxiety at the very idea of stringing more than two words together! And lastly, I found a way to give Lea both his names in this fic, woooooooo!
Next chapter, this thrilling night out continues! What further adventures in Friday night drinks await our hermit heroine? Is a career in singing ACTUALLY on the table for consideration or will it forever remain a pipe dream? Will Elsa ever perfect her ninja skills, which seriously leave something to be desired currently? Stay tuned!
Thanks for reading, I super duper appreciate it! And an extra BIG thank you to those of you hit that like button last chapter, seeing that always brings the biggest, goofiest smile to my face!

Prompt #18: Panglossian
To say Iiro wasn’t nervous would be a lie. She watched at the ivory spires of Limsa Lominsa came into view and her heart soared with excitement even as her stomach jumped with nervousness. This was the first time she had ever been away from home, after all! She wondered if her mother and father were worried about her, but she would be fine! She had done all her research, and she was ready! She’d become a great adventurer, know throughout the realm! Hells, maybe she’d even become more famous than the Warriors of Light! She found the nervousness being shoved down by the wave of giddy excitement that filled her.
She was quick to rush down the gangplank the minute she had a chance, looking around, her eyes sparkling. She lifted her arms, taking in the warm sun and the salty air, smiling ear to ear. Limsa Lominsa was rebuilding quickly, considering the Calamity was not that long ago. People were bustling about their days, laughter filled the air. There was a hopeful sort of energy in the air, and it was infectious.
“I’m here, M’aja,” she whispered, looking around. “I’m going to make you proud. Just you watch.” She took a moment of silence to remember her friend before shaking her head and rushing into the crowd. After a few minutes of walking, she realized she was quite lost. There were so many people! And so many decks and levels and... What was she going to do? She couldn’t even figure out where the Aetheryte was, and she remembered that was the first thing she had to do when she entered a new place.
She must have looked very lost because she was soon discovered by a slightly older Hyur man. He stepped in front of her, stopping her slow trek down the road. He smiled pleasantly at her, raising a hand in greeting.
“Ho! Hello there, miss. You look lost. Can I help you find something?” He asked her, and Iiro fidgeted shyly, looking away.
“Oh! Uh, yeah. I’m lost! I want to become an adventurer, but I’ve never been to Limsa so I don’t know where anything is!” she laughed nervously and the man nodded in understanding.
“Oh, yes! Limsa is a winding maze when you first get her. Have no worries, I’m more than happy to help you! I’m a bit of an adventurer myself, you see!” He winked at her. “Now, follow me, and be sure not to lose me, alright?” She nodded. Goodness, what a nice man! Her journey was off to a great start! She followed him carefully. He easily navigated the crowd and led her to the Aetheryte, even helpfully telling her how to attune to it.
He then led her to the Adventurer’s Guild where she met a gruff but nice man named Baderon. He was more than happy to help her register with the Adventurers Guild and show her all the points of interest on a map of Limsa Lominsa. He looked over at her new friend curiously, and looked back at Iiro, his cheerful tone dropping to a wary grumble.
“Well, that’s everything you need. You be careful out there, miss. We’ve been havin’ some kidnappings recently, and a pretty girl like you would be a prime target.” Iiro blushed but smiled confidently at him.
“Don’t worry! I’ll be just fine! I’m going to be a great adventurer!” she bragged, and though Baderon seemed hesitant, he nodded, shooting a look to her friend. She skipped away, giddy with excitement that she was now officially an adventurer when the man approached her.
“There we go! Welcome to the Guild, miss,” he said pleasantly. “What are you going to do now?” Iiro paused and thought, tapping her finger against her chin as she looked up to at the ceiling.
“Hm, I think I’ll go find some jobs and get my career into motion!” She said, and the man nodded.
“Well, if you’re going to do that...” he said, and she looked at him curiously, tilting her head. “Why don’t you join me and my crew? We could use an extra hand, and we’d be happy to help you out.” Iiro’s eyes practically sparkled. They wanted her in their party? That was great! She heard it could be hard to find people to party with as a new adventurer, and she had already found a party! She nodded excitedly.
“Yes! Yes, that’d be great! My name is Iiro Iro, by the way! A name to put on the papers, right?” She couldn’t hide her excitement, and the man smiled.
“My name is Murphy. Nice to meet you, Iiro!” he said. “Well, let me tell my party and get the paperwork in order. Why don’t you meet me in say, four bells...” He looked at her map in her hand and pointed to a small dock on the Lower Decks. It was a little out of the way, somewhere near the Fisher’s Guild, but she could probably find her way there with little trouble. “Right around here? We’ll figure out what to do then and you can get ready for the job we pick.”
“Alright!” Iiro folded the map and tucked it into her pocket. “I’ll see you in a little bit, Murphy!” He nodded and walked off. Iiro dug into her pack and pulled out her gil purse. She had saved up for this very moment! Quickly calculating what she needed, she rushed off to the Upper Decks. She took a moment to stop by the Arcanist Guild to get herself registered and then proceeded to the markets. She bought herself a shiny new book, some fancy new armor, and a handful of potions. She still had enough for a warm meal and was happily munching on a sandwich when the time came to meet her new party.
It was dark now, the sun having set about a bell ago. People had found themselves home, and the city was much quieter than it had been earlier. She found herself on a quiet, barely lit deck. It was a little eerie, just hearing the sound of the waves brushing against the pillars of the deck. She looked around. She couldn’t see Murphy or anyone else! Where was everyone? Was she too early?
Just as she thought this, something smashed against the back of her head and she staggered, her vision going white for a brief moment as she fell to her knees. She blinked, turning her head to see what had hit her, completely surprised to see Murphy standing behind her with a small group of men and woman, dangerous smiles on their faces as they began to crowd around her.
“Murphy?” She questioned, her voice shaking, her head spinning. “Why’d you hit me?”
“I can’t believe she actually came,” the Roegadyn woman to his right sneered. Murphy snickered, crossing his arms.
“Told ya she was stupid,” he said, leaning over Iiro. She looked up at him, confusion all over her face.
“W-what’s going on?” She asked. “Weren’t we going to party together...?” The group behind him laughed, a few insults being thrown in her direction that she couldn’t hear, her ears ringing from the blow to her head.
“Party together? Gods, you are stupid,” he said crouching down and reaching out. He gripped her long hair in his fist and she whimpered, tears coming to her eyes as fear filled her. He was going to hurt her! “We ain’t adventurers, luv. We’re pirates, and you? You were an easy target.” He reached out and forcibly pulled her pack from her. She let out a cry and reached for it, struggling in his grasp, but he shoved her away. When she fell on her back, he held her down with his foot, and she gasped for breath as she struggled under the pressure. He opened her pack and made a face.
“Psh. Not what I thought there’d be,” he grumbled, throwing the pack to another Hyur, who caught it. “Well, that’s fine. Those robes and that book look rather nice. We’ll be taking those.” Iiro’s face paled and she flailed.
“N-no! Please! That’s all I have,” she sobbed, fear filling her as he reached down and tore off the clasp of her robe. She struggled valiantly but was only rewarded only with a few blows to her face and body as his party joined it, forcibly taking everything she had, leaving her only in her small clothes.
“Careful, boys,” Murphy said. “Don’t hit the face too much. She won’t sell for as much if you bruise her up too much.” Iiro let out a sob, her chest aching. She had definitely broken something, and her limbs went limp as he stomped his boot into her midsection, knocking the air from her. Her vision blurred, but she was vaguely aware of the Roegadyn woman pulling out a coil of rope, preparing to tie her up. Was this how she died? Was she going to be killed on her first day of adventuring?
Her vision began to turn white around the edges as she felt the rope being tied around her wrists, cutting into bare skin, her ankles following. She tried to struggle one more time but was struck on the head once more. Her vision darkened, and though she tried to stay conscious, she found she couldn’t.
She mentally said goodbye to her mother and father, apologizing to M’aja as darkness finally overtook her.
She awoke later in a warm bed, her wounds treated and her body sore. She looked around, confused. The sun poured in through a small window to her left, and on a table near here was a small meal of stew and bread, still steaming and warm. She blinked, sitting up and whimpering as her chest protested. The door opened and she flinched, covering her head as a Miqo’te woman dressed in green walked in.
“Oh! You’re awake!” she said, walking up to Iiro. She was holding some more medical supplies and walked up to Iiro’s bed, placing them on the small nightstand. Iiro looked up at her, shaking, and the woman blinked. “Oh! Oh, no, don’t worry, you’re safe now. You took quite a beating. It’s a good thing Jacke heard you screaming or else you woulda been taken away by those wanna-be pirates.” She rinsed a cloth in a bowl of water and slowly reached out to dab at Iiro’s face. The Lalafell flinched and the woman recoiled.
“W-what happened...?” Iiro whimpered, and the woman tilted her head.
“You were mugged, and almost taken away to be sold. Those guys were pretty bad though. I can’t believe they tried to do that in front of the Guild. Here, let me clean your wounds.” Iiro was nervous but nodded as the Miqo’te continued talking, changing her bandages carefully. “Name’s V’kebbe, by the way. You’re safe in the Guild. Jacke was quick to make sure those idiots were punished for breaking the code.” Iiro stared up at her, confused, and V’kebbe sighed. “You’re probably still tired. I’ll tell the Guildmaster you’re awake. He wanted to talk to you. Then you can go back to sleep, okay?” She motioned to the table as she stood to leave. “You try to eat. I won’t be long.”
Iiro watched her go and walked carefully over to the table, sitting on the seat and looking at the stew. It was a simple meat stew, and she didn’t realize how hungry she was until the smell hit her nose. She quickly dug into the food, ripping a piece of bread with her teeth when the situation hit her. She had nothing. She was nearly taken away. Tears filled her eyes and she let out a choked sob, still shoveling food into her mouth as she cried. What was she going to do? She had no gil, nothing. They took everything. She only had the too-large clothes they had dressed her in, and no weapons. She couldn’t become an adventurer like this, and she couldn’t get home without gil...
“Yer awake,” a gruff voice said at the door, and Iiro looked up. A young man sauntered in, V’kebbe close behind him. “Good. Knew you’d wake up, but still, ye’ve been asleep fer two days. How ar’ ye feeling?” He looked over her and winced, noticing the snot and tears that dirtied her face. “Ah. Bad question. Sorry.”
“W-what do I do?” Iiro sobbed, dropping her half-finished bread and covering her face. “I don’t have anything. I don’t have any gil, or clothes or even a way to defend myself! W-what am I supposed to do now...?” The man watched her, arms crossed as he watched her cry for a moment.
“Ye could give up,” he suggested, and she looked up at him, shocked, eyes puffy and nose running. She shook her head fervently.
“No! No, I can’t! I have to become an adventurer, no matter what!” She sobbed. “I made promises. I have to! I have to!” The man watched her for a moment more and uncrossed his arms, walking up and kneeling next to her.
“Ye still want to fight?” he asked, and she nodded, rubbing her eyes as she tried desperately to dry her tears. “Ye want ta make a difference?” She nodded again and he huffed, smiling slightly and standing.
“Good. We can’t ‘elp ye with much, but we can help with that.” she looked up at him, confused. “Name’s Jacke. I’m the Guildmaster of the Rogue’s Guild- th’ very building yer in right now.” He made a sweeping motion to the room around them. “Ye wanna fight? We can ‘elp with that. Give you a pair of stabbers. Teach ye to protect yerself.”
“W-what?” she asked, eyes wide. Jacke sighed.
“I’m tellin’ ye to join our guild,” he told her. “We’ll help you, Give ye weapons, teach ye how to defend yerself. So long as ye want.” She sniffed, and he looked over her meal. “Ye don’t ‘ave to make a decision now, ye can rest-” Iiro blew her nose loudly before jumping up in her seat. Her body screamed at her, but she ignored it, staring at him, determination in her watery eyes.
“No. No! I’ll join. I have nothing else,” she said, her voice shaky. “Teach me how to fight! I want to defend myself! I won’t let anyone do this to me again!” Jacke grinned, crossing his arms.
“Alright. V’kebbe? Get this girl a pair of stabbers. We start lessons the second ye heal.”

The Sketch
Chapter two, segment five
Previous
Full chapter on Ao3 here
Running from your problems never works if you walk right back into them.
Johan relaxed with a cup of tea, petting Willy’s dog, Airgead.
“How do we know each other, Joey?” Willy asked, holding onto Shawn’s hand. The irishman had a black eye but a toothy grin. Wally nodded to his brother’s question. “I know you, I know I do, but… how? How do we know each other?”
“It’s… it’s a long story,” Joey sighed, trying not to drown in his thoughts. “You know how… how I um. Messed up, very b-badly?”
“An understatement, to say the least,” Wally laughed. “I died!”
“At least he wasn’t the one who killed you,” Shawn snarked, tapping the back of Joey’s head. “I’ll never forget how that felt. Yeesh.”
“Sorry, sorry,” Joey mumbled sheepishly. “I wasn’t okay….”
“We all know that,” Wally snorted. “Never really were, were you, Jo?”
“Probably not,” Johan sighed once more, feeling so alone in a room full of people. He was not much in the mood of being around others anymore. They laughed and chatted, and he wanted nothing more than to sink into the depths of the earth, never seen again, only surrounded by warmth. Airgead’s head plonked onto his lap, and he looked into the young dog’s eyes. Johan patted his head. Someone called his name. “Hm?”
“Go on,” Willy encouraged him, leaning back. “You messed up. Next?”
“Henry fixed it all up, and now we’re here,” Joey answered, and he wished that was the end of that. “Most of us haven’t mentally aged in that time, though, which I n-need to investigate more. It’s like w-we were in a stasis since 1929, and then when we came back, t-time continued on.”
“I guess that makes sense,” Marvin slowly stated, his brain going as fast as it could. “I mean… really would explain why I still feel young even though I should technically be thirty years older.”
“Yeah,” Joey trailed off, biting his lip. “I really was stuck being a teenager for thirty years… not recommended. You end up b-being foolish a-and blind.”
“Good to know,” Tian wryly replied, fiddling with his gauges. “Wasn’t really planning on doing somethin’ like that, you know.”
“I know,” Joey responded, feeling drained. He got up. “Anyone want any more tea? I’m going to get some m-more for myself.”
He left without another word, and sank against the wall of the Franks slash Flynn kitchen, breathing heavily. Gracehopper landed on his knee, trying to bring him some comfort, even a little bit. He gnashed his teeth, trying not to cry out loud, and he quickly rose, hands going to his mouth, and he ran out. He ran out of the house, and ran out of the lavender field it was surrounded by, and ran out of the city’s borders, running until he could hardly hear his thoughts, only the drumming of his feet hitting the ground, his weeping pants, and he ran until the shore of Manhattan Beach, fell to his knees, and screamed as loud as he could, his voice echoing over the ocean.
It was… terrifying… in such a comforting way. That there was something so much bigger and stronger than him, that could destroy him in moments, that he would simply drown away and never be found, discovering things that would never be spoken about just because their discoverer was dying, taking last glorious breaths of ocean water.
His head fell onto his chest, and he shook with silent sobs. The sun was on his back, setting slowly. His eyes rose to see the ocean, and he could see the red sunset reflected within it, and, while Johan was no sailor, he delighted in it. How similar he was to the ocean, that their eyes were one and the same, watery, weeping, unknown deaths hidden deep within their resecess, crying to those that would listen, and so powerfully alone.
Joey slowly realized where he was with dismay, and begrudgingly got off of the sand, not bothering to brush it off, knowing that it would flake off on his long trek home, pulling his cloak around himself and his mask over his face, to be unfamiliar until home. Home sounded so wonderful. It sounded like Henry. Home, Henry, one and the same, though in two different places, but so similar. Firm like Henry, solid, comfortable, safe, all like him. Joey was lost in these thoughts as he slowly walked, or rather, limped his way back, knowing there were blisters on his feet and sunburn on his ears. His head was low, his eyes drooping. He was tired, but not badly so, the tiredness of ‘This is going to feel wonderful when my head hits the pillow’.
How had he run so far? How long was he running?
Miles?
He did know, and he breathed slowly as he slowly glided down the alleys.
It was a gentle passing, he alone, he with nothing but the rising stars and moon.
Hours passed, time marked by his foot falls.
One foot in front of the other, some sand by his ankles, but not uncomfortably so, its presence oddly grounding. He walked, and walked. He passed the wharf closer to his studio, and froze, hearing murmuring voices. He made himself relax. It was just some random people. There was no need to be so nervous about everything and anything. The bridge’s wind was chilly, and he shivered, walking onwards.
Looking out to the water beneath the bridge, he shuddered.
It looked like ink in the dark night, the black sky reflected in deep murky waters. He wondered what it was like beneath the quay, but for a brief moment. Water terrified him, as growing up in the desert, he never learned how to swim, and the rivers and oceans were so vast, dark, and horrifying, he never could bear the thought of learning now. But he leaned against the rail.
It was silent.
A hand clapped onto his mouth, another yanking back his arm, and he shrieked in pain, but it was muffled by the hand. Joey was bent over the rail, his heart pounding. He struggled against the gang that was busily restraining him, tying his feet together to a cement block and his hands behind his back.
“Fleischer sends his regards,” was hissed in his ear, and he was yanked up by the cinderblock, thrown over the bridge. He screamed as he dropped to the water, and he felt it surge around his body, all encompassing and covering. Joey could vaguely hear above him laughter, and the sound of a car starting and going away. He cursed himself. He should have been more careful.
Panic was the next thing to fill him.
He. Could. Not. Breathe.
Writhing in the water, he looked around in a panic, everything blurry from not only his terrible vision but by the tumultuous waves above him. He felt a bump as the block hit the bottom of the river, and he closed his eyes, and would have wept if he could, but could not, and so, instead of that, he thought harder than ever before to save himself. Never before had he cared more to get away from death, normally finding it a comfort for a tranquil end, but the idea of dying at the hands of water was enough to crush him to minuscule pieces. He opened his eyes once more, calmer. A green glint caught his eye, and he knew it to be a beer bottle, thrown in by some drunkard on a rave or who knows what, he did not care at the time, or ever again. He prayed it was shattered, and that one bit of luck was given to him, that one saving grace. Wriggling over in the current, he managed to spin and grab it after three tries, and he sawed at the ropes binding his wrists, the sharp fracture cutting him in a few places accidentally, definitely getting glass into his fingers. He could feel their nibbling bites driving into his skin, puckering around the shards. Johan finally managed to break free of those ropes, and set to work on his feet, his lungs burning. He needed air, desperately! He hacked out of the ropes, and shot up, and found the surface much farther than he rather believe, and he would have torn off his cloak if he did not have faith in himself. He kicked his way up, higher, and elevating himself in the water, and he stared to the wavering moon as darkness began to cloud his vision, taking it over, water seeping into his fragile lungs. Joey’s hand felt cold, and he burst out of the water, his mask destroyed by the liquid and dripping down his face, his hair clinging to his skull, tangled to no end, but never had he been so alive, every nerve buzzing. He slowly made his way out of the water, coughing, coughing, and then, breathing. In, and out, each breath so painful, so wondrous. He collapsed on the rocks, and… breathed.
He lay on the rocky shore, air seeping out and in, his chest pressed to the cold ground, his wet cloak pressing down on him with a sensation of warmth. When the sun rose, his groggy thoughts began to clear, and with the dawn, it dawned on him that he would be late to work. Johan pushed himself off the stoney earth’s floor, and carefully began walking to the studio. On the way, he threw away the ruined mask and instead pulled his drying hood over his head.
As he expected, he was late, and everyone stared at him as he trudged into his office. Dot knocked on his door to inform him of his meetings, stared at him, and giggled at his dazed and absentminded appearance.
“Should I cancel these meetings, then, sir?” she asked with a smile. Johan nodded, resting his head on his desk. “Alright, Mr. Drew. Have a good da- oh, hello Dr. Stein!”
The young frenchwoman scurried away as Henry entered the office, closing the door behind himself, and walked over to Joey.
“Where were you?” he inquired, befuddlement and some demand in his tone, his hand going to Joey’s arm to give it a grounding squeeze. His brows shot up. “And why are you… uh, moist? Did you shower in your clothes again, Joey?”
“No, I had an impromptu swimming lesson,” Joey replied, his hand going to push Henry’s away, but instead they intertwined. Henry’s thumb absentmindedly ran over the back of Joey’s hand as he looked into his eyes. Joey shifted and swallowed roughly. “....”
“You smell like the river,” Henry observed with concern, eyebrow raising. “The river is dangerous, Joey, everyone knows that. What… you’re lying, please, what happened? Why are you all wet? Were you not paying attention to where you were going?”
“I was, I was,” he insisted, crossing his heart with his spare hand. He took off his pin to check if the photographs within were damaged by the water, and found to his relief, they were not. He pinned it back, and gave the worried Henry a small smile. “I’m fine.”
“Joey.”
“I said I’m fine.”
“I know what you said, and you’re not! Who tried to kill you this time!? Your hands, there’s cuts all over them, Joey, what happened!?”
Johan froze, and his jaw locked.
“Joey,” Henry breathed in sharply, rubbing the bridge of his nose. “You’re going to come home with me, and then, you’re getting out of New York for a bit. You mentioned that your cousin is in California? Go visit her. Please, just… I’ll send one of the Franks to grab tickets for you, go pack your stuff. Just do this for me, okay?”
“Don’t send me away!” Joey pleaded, gripping his desk. “W-what about the toons, th-the workers? I can’t just abandon th-them, they’re m-my, our, studio f-family! Don’t do this, to me, Henry… please, don’t.”
“I have to,” Henry insisted, his blue eyes screwed shut with internal pain. “I’m… I’m scared Johan. I worry for you. So much… I can’t stand the thought of losing you now, not after everything we’ve been through. I’ll take care of the toons, I’ll sign the checks, but Joey, if you’re dead, everything is going to fall apart. Do you understand? Do this for us.”
Joey looked around his office with torn eyes. He wanted to stay, so badly… but Henry was right. They had come so far, and it took so much work. He sighed and sank into his chair.
“Okay,” he whispered, his head lowering. “I’ll go visit Ramona. Fine. Fine! You win.”
“Joey, don’t talk like that,” Henry scolded with a groan. “You’re making it sound like I’m punishing you, but I’m not, I really am not. I promise you, I just want you to be safe. Throw them off your tail, clear the air. I don’t want you to get hurt.”
“I know,” Johan replied, getting up, grabbing his cane, hobbling towards the elevator. “It doesn’t make it hurt any less, you know. It hurts more.”
“Joey, please, let’s just have a nice dinner after work,” Henry asked, hugging him on the elevator, swaying a little. “It’ll be good. Us an’ Linda, as a family for once, you’re always too busy or I’m at work, can’t we just have this one thing together?”
“I think it would be… nice…” Joey slowly agreed with Henry, his knees lowering and his head burying in Henry’s hair, he inhaling the man’s smell of strawberries. “It would be v-very nice.”
“Mm, that’s the spirit,” Henry encouraged, hugging him a little tighter. “We could have something vegetarian if that suits you.”
“Very much,” Joey admitted with a smile, getting off the stopped lift, his thin hand locked in Henry’s broad one. “What are you thinking of?”
“How much I adore you,” Henry answered without missing a beat. Joey hushed him, blushing, his steps speeding up. Henry grinned, and went on, “How much I’d like to take you to my house for a nice dinner, making sure you eat for once, relaxing on the couch with my arm around you, tight and warm, close and together. But dinner wise, I’m thinking my father’s walnut and endive salad, cause I wanna pull you close endive right in, and then if you grab some eggs from your chickens, darling, vegetarian haggis, my mom’s recipe.”
“You’re disgusting!” Johan laughed, but thought it a wonderful idea anyways. “But… that does sound interesting, honestly… you’re not going to cook it in a sheep’s stomach, are you?”
“No, no I won’t,” Henry chuckled, and patted Johan’s stomach. “I should though, you need to put on some weight.”
“Ew! No, thanks, Henry. No way.”
Johan and Henry packed in silence, though Henry insisted on being the one to pack Joey’s undergarments, making a point of packing an extra pair, grinning and raising an eyebrow as he did so, finding himself tackled under Johan’s thin and bright red frame, the lanky chicano flustered and embarrassed, and they laughed, realizing how absurd they looked. Johan carefully packaged some eggs, grabbing a loaf of honey cake with it. Henry watched him with somber eyes, which Joey caught. Joey smiled at him sadly, walking over and hugging him over the shoulders.
“It’ll be okay, Jo,” Henry assured him.
“I know,” Joey replied, hugging him tightly. “I know.”
“Let’s get back to work,” Henry told him, and so they did.
At the end of the day, they met up in the parking lot, and Henry hopped onto the back of Johan’s motorbike, and off they went, and then they were at Henry’s house. They began cooking together, and Diane dropped Linda off an hour later. She eagerly helped Henry with preparing the haggis as Johan made faces behind Henry’s back, Linda howling in laughter at each of them. Joey adored the girl, she filled his heart with so much joy.
They finished cooking, and they ate the salad together as the other food cooled, Henry and Joey swapping stories and joking, Linda adding in her own anecdotes every so often. They were safe and happy, and together. Johan even praised Henry’s cooking skills, and he pinned it on his excellent parents. They toasted strawberry champagne to Henry’s parent’s good health, and Johan's parent’s poor health, laughing their heads off as they did so. Even Linda joined in, though she was not quite sure as to the purpose of it. Henry suddenly realized that Joey technically was not of age to drink, and Johan immediately spat back that alcohol was entirely illegal anyways. Henry had nothing to say in return, and Johan sipped his drink with a smug fangy grin.
They sat on the couch after eating, Linda sandwiched between them, Johan reading to her a story as Henry dozed off, his arm over Linda’s shoulders and hand on Joey’s shoulder. Eventually Joey put the gal to sleep, carried her to her room, and then returned to Henry, curling around him on the couch. Henry’s hand ran through his hair.
“Your hair’s white again,” Henry commented quietly. Johan hummed in acknowledgement. “What happened? Why did you go white so soon?”
“I don’t know,” Joey replied, his eyes closed. “I think that my, uh, powers did it to me. That using them to reset left a permanent mark on me.”
“I think it’s pretty,” Henry softly remarked. Joey went still. “I always did. It’s such a… fascinating thing, your hair. Gorgeous.”
“Yours is also really w-wonderful,” Johan mumbled, blushing. “It always smells like strawberries. I, uh, like it a lot. It’s soft and I love the curls.”
“Your ears are cute,” Henry cooed, scratching behind one of them. Joey gasped, but leaned into the touch anyways, vibrating slightly. “And that’s cute, too. What is it, like, uh, purring? It’s really nice and adorable. So so cute.”
“I’m not adorable!” Joey whined, his blush going deeper into his skin, ears tilting back. Henry grinned, raising an eyebrow, scratching under Joey’s chin, messing with his short (but growing) beard, making Johan sigh and squeak with the ticklish and delightful feeling. “How d-do y-you know me s-so well?”
“Cause I love you,” Henry responded quietly. Joey looked at him with wide red eyes. Henry looked back. “I really do, a lot.”
“I love you, too, Henry,” Joey softly said, smiling. “You’re incredible. And wonderful. I trust you for everything, with everything. I adore you.”
Whatever happened on that couch, Joey did not know for certain, but he knew he felt weightless, and so happy, silently together in domestic tranquility, a sun and an icarus. But this time, his wings remained unsinged, and their binding was not physically enforced, foreheads pressed together and nothing more, but the spiritual sensation of wholeness encompassed them both to the ends of the entirety of the universes, though their own was a construct of their own making, and they built another one within it, just them two, alone together.
“Johan Icarus,” Henry murmured, tasting the name on his tongue, savoring it. “When you’re done visiting your family, come back here, as they’d never think to look here.”
“I’m sure Disney and Fleischer would think to look here, Henry, it’s rather obviou-”
“I meant your family,” Henry continued with a smirk. Joey’s mouth remained open in shock, and Henry’s hand closed it for him, pushing his chin up. “They’d never find us. Not in a million years, not a million resets.”
Joey teared up, and Henry smiled at him softly.
“I know we’ll make it. No matter how hard it gets, we’re going to get through.”
Henry rocked Johan as he wept into his chest, comforting himself as well as the younger man, and they took solace in each other. Eventually they parted, Johan going to the guest bedroom and Henry to his own room, and called goodnights to each other.
Johan drifted to sleep, and he suddenly registered a small presence in his room. He looked up to see Linda standing in the doorway.
“Uncle Joey? Can I stay in your bed tonight?” she asked him in a loud whisper, tugging on his blanket. He lifted it up and let her crawl inside, then pulled her close and tucked the blanket around her. “Thank you.”
It was all quiet once more.
“I wish I could call you papa Joey,” she mumbled. Johan froze up again. “Cause my Daddy loves… loves you… and I love you, too. I wish he would marry you already.”
“I love you both t-too,” Joey whispered to her, hugging her tiny body. “You’re my little Linda. But… I guess Hen and I aren’t ready for that yet. Heck, we just had our first date!”
“Don’t you have a date in the park every tuesday?” Linda inquired with some wonder. “That’s what Daddy calls them.”
“I, uh, didn’t know that he called them that,” Joey bemusedly replied with a smile in his voice. “It’s sweet, but… hm. I’d call them, uh, informal meetings.”
“They’re dates,” Linda pouted. Joey chuckled, “Okay, okay.”
Joey’s door opened again. Henry slipped in.
“Can I join you?” he questioned them with a smile, and both Linda and Joey scooted to make room for him. “Linda, scooch away for a sec, I need to kiss Joey.”
“No you don’t!” Joey squeaked, turning bright red, shielded by the darkness and his deep inky skin. “You most certainly do not!”
Linda giggled as they bickered, and wiggled into the blanket, lulled to sleep by her parent’s soft and loving voices.
When Linda woke up, Joey and Henry were eating a rushed breakfast, preparing to leave for the train station, and Diane picked Linda up to take her to school.
At the train station, Joey and Henry kept a gentleman’s distance, though Henry assisted him with his suitcase, making sure his compartment was comfortable enough, double checking his tickets with him, anxious to leave him. Joey shooed him away, and soon, the train took off. Henry waved him off from the platform, and blew him a kiss he made sure to catch.
Joey’s visit to his cousins was uneventful, though he was appalled at the conditions they were in, and made sure to fix them to the best of his ability. He was not sorry to leave them after a week and a half, and eagerly returned home, to Henry.
Though Henry was not smiling when he picked him up from the train station. He handed him a mask, and told him to put it on.
“What? Why?” Joey asked, perplexed. There was a police badge flashed in his face not a minute later. “What the hell is g-going on?”
His questions went unanswered as his hands were placed behind his back, and he was glad he put on his gloves earlier. He flinched as he heard the click of the cuffs behind him, and he felt his breathing pick up speed.
“Calm down, Joey, it will be okay,” Henry assured him, more sounding like he was trying to assure himself. “There’s no proof.”
“For what?!” he demanded as he was led away. “Can someone please tell me what’s happening?!”
“You’re under arrest for the murder of Walter Elias Disney,” he was informed. Behind the mask, his jaw dropped. Weakly, he asked, “Excuse me, what?”

A Clawful Plan & A Pawssibly Good Day (Chapter 10) - Dinner for Two Marichat Fic
A Clawful Plan & A Pawssibly Good Day
Plagg quietly sipped at his coffee the next morning, idly watching Pierre set down the chairs for the morning hours when the restaurant would open for business.
His voice seemed loud in the emptiness of the large space and the lack of the usual talk of the crowd and bustling kitchen, “Did Adrien say when he would be back today?”
The chair scraped slightly against the floor and Pierre pushed it under the table neatly, a sigh escaping him, “He said to expect him just before-“
The doors opened as if on cue and the blond himself walked in, hoodie pulled down deeper to cover his face, hair messy, “Hello Pierre, Plagg.” Adrien moved the protective cover of the hoodie away from his face, smiling tiredly at his friends, “I’m sorry for being late, had late night shoots yesterday and an exam earlier this morning.” He didn’t have any eyebags, he couldn’t allow himself to, being a model, but Plagg could definitely see the exhaustion in that green stare.
“Why don’t ya take the day off? It’s a Wednesday.” Wednesdays were reserved for Adrien to freely study for university if his schedules called for it, like upcoming exams or catching up with lost lectures or attend events his father forced him to go to.
Adrien rubbed his chin, resting his hand on his hip and Plagg snickered at the model pose, “Wednesdays are always so full of customers, are you guys going to be alright?” he scratched the back of his head, a sign he was uncomfortable with ditching work.
Pierre offered a kind smile, “Of course, you don’t have to worry at all Adrien. Just make sure to keep up with your studies and don’t forget to rest too.”
Adrien smiled at the elder man, bowing slightly in gratitude, “Thank you Pierre.” He looked at Plagg, who was watching him curiously, “Plagg, don’t trash the VA room again, please.”
The dark-haired man rolled his eyes playfully, “Yeah, yeah, mom don’t worry. Now shoo and go before I change my mind and sit your ass down here.” Plagg was about to take a sip of his coffee before an arm planted itself around his shoulders abruptly and a hand roughly ruffled his already messy raven hair.
“Thanks Plagg, Pierre! You guys are the best!” with a smile to Pierre, the blond raced out of the restaurant, leather bag filled with today’s lecture papers.
Pierre chuckled at the dark, murderous frown on Plagg’s face, “Shut it old man.”
Pierre’s expression changed drastically, a brief flicker of something more sinister shining in those old, brown eyes, “Excuse me, Plagg?”
The raven haired man stiffened, “A-Apologies sir!”
The old butler nodded approvingly, his usual friendly disposition in place and Plagg sighed in relief, sagging further into his seat, muttering about secret demon butlers and pesky blonds.
His phone vibrated with a new message and he lazily took it out, quickly typing in the password and opening the messages.
They were from Tikki.
‘Good morning stinky sock! I hope the cheese cake I made you yesterday was alright. Have a nice day at work, catch you for lunch tomcat!’
A heartwarming smile softened his normally sharp features, Pierre discreetly watching the man’s lips transform into a gentle smile as he typed a reply.
‘Morning, sugar cube. Of course it was, it was purrfect. Don’t overwork yourself either today, I’ll wait for you with lunch outside the shop.’
Adding a silly emoji at the end, Plagg sent his message taking another sip of his coffee.
For some reason, it tasted sweeter.
------------
Marinette stubbed her toe against the desk, cursing under her breath and Nathaniel paused in his sketch to look over his shoulder curiously, a sympathetic smile on his lips, “You okay?”
The dark haired woman sighed, slumping back onto her chair, “Fine…”
Nathaniel set his pencil down and turned towards his friend completely, “Sure? You don’t look that fine to me. When did you go to sleep?” he had always had an eye for detail, ever since his childhood days where he first began to draw every day. It also meant he nearly always picked up on miniscule details other people failed to notice.
As often as Marinette wore very little to no make-up, today she had applied a thicker layer under her eyes, which blended into her skin tone to hide the dark eyebags.
Marinette should’ve known Nathaniel knew better, she gingerly touched the smooth skin beneath her eye, “That obvious?” she offered a tired smile and Nathaniel shook his head.
“To me, yes, but not to others.” His small smile stretched into a concerned frown, “Seriously, what’s up? You’ve been on edge lately. We made the deal with that model and the fashion event is only a few days away, I would be relaxed in your stead.” The red-head crossed his arms, carefully observing the woman before him who wrung her hands in her lap nervously before her.
A drawn out sigh and a groan followed her next words, “I know but-! Argh!” she threw her hands in the air, standing up and pacing back and forth in a line, hands gesticulating wildly, “Have you ever met a person you thought was really funny and kind and interesting but like, you don’t know them all too well and you suddenly see a different side to them that you didn’t expect and you don’t like that side of them and you feel really helpless and frustrated?!” Marinette still continued to pace before hands clasped onto her shoulders and Nathaniel gently grabbed her attention by turning her towards him.
“Hey, easy, stop trying to walk holes into our floor.” Nathaniel soothingly squeezed her shoulders again, “I…I guess I can relate to what you’re saying Marinette.” The surprised look she gave him made the professor chuckle, “Remember Chloe? I used to have a bit of a crush on her in primary school, until she started with that bullying anyway. That went away pretty fast. I mean, I don’t really think it’s the same as your situation, but I can relate with the liking someone and not liking certain aspects of them thing. It’s natural.” He shrugged, noticing her calming down slowly, “…Want some coffee?”
Slumping her shoulders, Marinette nodded and Nathaniel led her toward the kitchen, setting up fresh coffee while Marinette slowly started talking about the restaurant she frequented in her breaks.
Once both steaming coffee mugs were in front of them, along with a cookie plate inbetween, did Nathaniel stare at the woman in bewilderment, “W-Wait…you…you’re saying there’s…a toy?” Nathaniel still tried to wrap his head around the quick explanation Marinette had given him, about her recent behavior, her extended breaks, everything. “And…there’s a guy voicing that toy and you…started liking him?” Nathaniel rubbed at his chest, feeling a stinging sensation there, but he tried to curb it.
Marinette, pink faced, slowly nodded, “I mean, maybe ‘liking’ is a bit strong, I mean, he’s really nice and funny! I like his puns! And he keeps me company while I eat, he’s easy to talk to and get along with and well, I don’t know! I l-like his voice okay!?” Marinette slapped her hands to her face, the tips of her ears a beet red and Nathaniel burst into laughter at her shy reaction, “S-Stop laughing! I’ll demote you!” the threat was empty, but it sounded adorable coming from her red face.
Nathaniel coughed a few times, trying to hold in the chuckles trying to come out, before he took a sip of his coffee and it finally died down, “So…you like his voice, huh?” Nathaniel adjusted the collar of his shirt, feeling slight embarrassment bubbling within his own chest at how cute Marinette reacted.
“Ugh, Nath!” Marinette looked ready to spontaneously combust or throw something at him, “It’s-I-I mean- it’s not like I-“ she backtracked, eyes blown wide, elbows planted on the table and hiding her eyes, “Uhm…I…actually did see him.”
The professor’s eyes flew open, leaning forward over the table, “Wait, what? You did? When? How comes you didn’t tell me?” he tried pinpointing when it could’ve possibly been, maybe the time she visited him? But that meant she saw him on campus and that was highly impo-
“I-I met him after your lectures…I kinda bumped into him in the hallway…”
Nathaniel choked.
“What does he look like? What’s his name?” alright, maybe Nathaniel was getting too excited to know this guy, but he definitely wanted the best for her, even if it meant throwing his own infatuation out of the window.
He tried ignoring the prickly, painful sensations in his heart.
“H-His name’s Erik, he’s a bit taller than me, messy dark hair, he likes to joke around and um, he teaches art psychology or uh, art therapy in your university.”
Nathaniel’s body froze and his blood ran cold.
Images conjured up in his mind.
Memories of the past two years of him working as a professor to be exact.
And him.
‘Yo, Kurtzberg, playing with colors again? You’ve got something there on your cheek.’
‘Hey tomato-head, cooped up alone in that room, doesn’t that drive you up the wall? Go out and have some fun, maybe you’ll get some friends along the way!’
“Nathaniel?” Marinette rose an eyebrow at the vacant stare he seemed to have set on a fixed point on the table and she waved her hand.
‘Heh, this looks like a bird shit on it, if I have to guess what’s on your mind, I think the answer stays the same dontcha think?’
‘Most artists only dream of being able to tell what art truly means like us therapists, it’s a shame you chose the weaker craft of the two.’
“Nathaniel? Hey! Earth to Nathaniel!” the man jumped, as if ripped from his own thoughts, wide eyes looking at her.
“Uh, s-sorry, I-uh, got lost in thoughts.” He scratched his head, ruffling his already messy hair.
Marinette noticed the familiar almost haunted look in his eyes, it reminded her of her younger days when she used to be bullied in school. Her hand reached across the table and settled lightly over his fist, “Does he treat you badly at work?”
She had a hunch, but she couldn’t picture it. It didn’t fit together, the picture she had of Chat Noir when she was in the restaurant and when she met him at campus.
Maybe she was wrong, after all.
Nathaniel smiled weakly, “Don’t worry, I tell him off politely whenever he tries to act all alpha male on me. I’ve learned a thing or two following high school.” He winked reassuringly, and patted Marinette’s hand closed over his fist, “It’s just, I always had bad vibes about him, before he started being a jerk to me. He just spells trouble.” He noticed the conflicted look on her face, “But don’t let my personal judgement influence your own, if you say he acts differently in the restaurant, maybe the jerk behavior is just an act? Maybe it’s just me.”
At that, Marinette immediately shook her head, “No! Don’t think that for a second! I don’t know what it is but I’ll find out, he can’t treat any of my friends that way if…if I really do end up liking him that much.” She looked unsure of herself and Nathaniel hated seeing her like that.
He squeezed her hand reassuringly, “I wouldn’t worry too much Marinette, if he likes you, he will realize what a mistake it is in letting you go.”
Marinette flushed, smiling warmly at him, “Thanks Nath, I can always count on you to cheer me up when I need it.” She grinned awkwardly, “Well, except Alya as your female counterpart.”
Nathaniel smiled.
-----------
Adrien almost groaned in bliss at the explosion in his mouth, the delicious pastry from the bakery he grabbed on the way felt like the first taste of heaven after enduring weeks of hell.
He was on his way to catch up on his studies at Nino’s place, before getting ready for the fashion event later this afternoon, he had enough time to pour over the new materials his professor gave him before he had to drive towards the address for the fashion event, of course hosted by Agreste Fashion, with a model wearing a dress made a growing designer. He hadn’t caught the designer’s name, but according to conversations he overheard, the designer must be good at their craft with decent production time.
He hoped to get breaks in-between, he hadn’t eaten much except for the pastry and a small breakfast in the morning before the exam. He bet Nino had some leftovers from yesterday, maybe even something edible in the fridge.
Nino was a surprisingly good cook, courtesy of Nora who loved and treated him like he was her very own little brother since his and Alya’s high school days. Nino mentioned Nora being a bit of a tough nut, instead of showering him with affection, she usually showered him with ‘tough love’ when she visited, whatever that meant.
Adrien smiled when he spotted the building Nino’s apartment was in, he also remembered the very stunned look the DJ gave him when he humbly asked to temporarily share living quarters.
‘Sure dude, you know you’re always welcome, but what happened? Did you lose your apartment? Did your dad piss you off?’
As probable as the last possibility was, Adrien had explained what the true reason was, his apartment was empty.
Not furniture-wise.
It lacked warmth.
It lacked everything a room with people living in it should have, warmth, personal belongings, trinkets that were useless or not that pretty but were still held dear.
Trivial things that made his father scrunch his nose.
Trivial things that made Adrien smile because they reminded him of his mother, when she would take little trinkets and souvenirs from places she would visit for her roles and bring back with her.
Adrien himself didn’t have much, not many personal things, the things he recently got that were closer to his heart were pictures of him and Nino. Those were already in his apartment, one in a frame, the other clipped to a piece of string he remembered seeing in Nino’s house all those years ago, when they were still teens. It inspired him to do something similar, it felt so personal, so real.
For now, only Nino’s picture hung there, they also made a few pictures with Alya at the club as a memory, those would come there too.
Adrien hoped many more would come. Maybe even some with a certain dark haired woman with bluebell eyes.
He took out the spare keys Nino gave him, quickly unlocking the front door and jogging up the stairs before finding the door to Nino’s apartment already unlocked.
Was Nino home?
Adrien pushed the door open, stepping in and setting the keys in a bowl near the doorway, taking his shoes off, “Nino?” he called out, already smelling something delicious wafting in from the kitchen.
“M’ here dude!” the boisterous voice of his friend called back and a small smile lit Adrien’s entire face as he made his way towards the kitchen.
The rooms were small, but enough for one, or two to comfortably live in.
Nino was sitting at the kitchen table, steaming plate in front of him, fork rolling around in the sea of noodles, vegetables and sauce, “Hey man, grab a plate and join me, you haven’t eaten anything much, right?”
The blond snorted softly, shaking his head as he fixed himself a plate and glass of water, “It’s scary how well you know me after all those years.”
The DJ grinned boyishly, gently punching his friend in the shoulder, “Once a model, always a model, huh?”
Adrien chuckled, “Once a friend, always a friend.” Nino’s teasing expression softened, and he nodded immediately, both men chuckling.
“I thought you were in the studio practicing for that gig you were hired for?” Adrien had to admit, even if Nino was nowhere near Marlena’s caliber of cooking, the food was still good.
He wolfed down the veggies and noodles when Nino started talking, “I was, in the morning though. It’s already two in the afternoon, don’t tell me you forgot how to read the clock?”
Adrien rolled his eyes playfully, “I forgot the time, it flew by so fast after that exam, I was just rushing from one point to the next.” Nino spotted the leather bag set on the couch in the connected living room, frowning in concern.
“Aw man, you still gotta study, huh?”
The blond shrugged, swallowing down the noodles, “Yeah, but I should be done in no time. It’s not that much, besides I still need to get ready for that event today, so I’ll go over to my apartment to prepare. I think I’ll sleep there too, so don’t stay up late okay?”
Nino huffed, taking a big gulp of water, “Whatever you say, mom. Just drive safe and don’t drink too much, young man.” Nino imitated the voice of an old woman and both men, despite themselves, burst out laughing at their silly antics.
Adrien enjoyed these things.
Whenever he entered Nino’s apartment, it always reminded him of home, or the closest thing he could associate to it. It reminded him of their school days and strong friendship and what a good man Nino was.
The two men continued eating and chatting and laughing, even after half an hour went by, Adrien felt at ease, the papers in his bag temporarily forgotten, the fashion event forgotten.
All that mattered was the food, his friend, the atmosphere.
It smelled – it felt – like home.
-------------------
Erik strolled across campus leisurely, scanning his schedule for his next class, when he spotted the familiar sight of a certain dark haired woman in the distance.
A grin automatically stretched his lips and he waved to catch her attention, “Marinette! Hey!”
The woman jumped, surprised by the call before she relaxed upon noticing him and waving back.
Erik walked up to her and smiled down at her, “Hey, visiting tom-uh Nathaniel again?”
Marinette smiled, “Hey Erik. Yeah, I just wanted to go over a few things concerning work, I won’t be a bother for too long.” Erik looked around, that explained why she waited near his office too.
Erik planted his hands in his pockets, “I see. So, you don’t have some time today, huh?”
She flashed him an apologetic smile, “I’m sorry, I don’t. I have to help organize a fashion event and help dress the models.”
His interest peaked at the word ‘models’, “Models, huh? Mind if I watch?” the grin on his face was positively feral, but the look in Marinette’s eyes hardened to steel.
“Watch?” she rose an eyebrow and Erik backtracked quickly.
“You know, your work, how you work.” He cleared his throat, “Anyway, I may not make it actually, I have classes starting soon until late. See ya tomorrow, purrhaps?”
A smile made its way on the frown previously marring her pretty features and Marinette nodded, “Sure. Good luck on your lectures!”
“Yeah, you too!” he waved and moved towards the long stairs ahead.
Marinette sighed, rubbing her arm.
--------------
A few hours later…
Flashing lights, clicking heels and painted faces greeted Marinette as soon as she entered.
Paparazzi, bodyguards and models as far as the eye can see.
There were so many people.
She took a breath, before carrying her designs and bag with designing tools towards the changing areas. It didn’t take her long at all to spot a model, or several of them.
Most were doing their make-up, chatting or doing pep talks. Marinette couldn’t fault them for it, she would be a jittery, nervous mess if she would’ve even have to imagine stepping foot onto a catwalk, or anywhere where hundreds of eyes would be on her.
She wasn’t good in the spotlight.
After greeting and going over the minor details and major parts of the show, Marinette helped them put on the dresses she designed, feeling at the same time odd but comfortable, handling something that was hers, her very own work in her hands, and helping models put them on, adjusting things and offering advice.
It felt liberating but also frightening, like an otherworldly experience.
Marinette wasn’t new to fashion nor to handling fabrics or designs, but she was new to this; the spotlights, the flashing cameras, the crowded fashion galas with hundreds of models running up and down looking for their agents, bodyguards or organizers.
She smiled kindly when another model thanked her for her help in braiding her hair, it wasn’t part of the job, but she would help wherever she could if it meant easing the anxious looks on the young women’s faces.
She wasn’t much older than them and yet, she felt obligated to keep them as comfortable and relaxed as possible under these circumstances.
Some models were seasoned experts, doing breathing exercises or small, personal rituals. Some were tracing patterns on their hands to calm themselves, others were looking in the mirror and silently encouraging themselves, some were chatting with others while again others were drinking juices or water to distract them from the big event which would open any minute.
It was almost time to shine.
Marinette excused herself from the changing rooms, making sure the models were taken care of before she stepped out.
The large, luxurious ballroom was filled to the brim with people. Some were already sitting, looking like they belonged to the VIPs or high end people who would asses the event. Others in suits were chatting amongst themselves near the buffet, people with cameras were keeping a low profile and trying to discreetly take pictures without disturbing the guests too much.
Marinette was glad she had the pass around her neck, people would mistake her for some lost woman who accidentally stumbled into this fine establishment and not a semi-respected designer whose work was about to be put up on stage.
She took a deep, staggering breath, accepting a glass of orange juice from a waiter who was parading around with a plate full of champagne and orange juice glasses.
She gulped the liquid down in nearly one go, frayed nerves still breaking at the seams, but at least she was sure she was hydrated.
Marinette decided to mingle about the crowd, greeting a few other designers she’d met a handful of times, but otherwise keeping to herself.
Due to so many people, there wasn’t much room for individual people to really distance themselves from the crowd. It was inevitable to hear some private conversations.
Marinette pretended to enjoy the ambience while subtly listening in on any remotely interesting conversation topics.
She spotted a group of male models a few steps away, talking, some chuckling. Almost all of them had bathrobes on, they would obviously come up on stage later, after the female models were done with their performances.
As Marinette tried to slip past the group of males, back towards the changing rooms to check on her models, she nearly tripped over her own feet when a particular voice caught her attention.
She was sure she wasn’t imagining it, but when she turned around, there were several models talking, it was impossible to say which voice belonged to whom. There was a blond with green eyes, a brunet with blue eyes, several black haired guys with brown eyes.
But there was only one name that hit her like a lightning bolt when she heard a familiar voice sound from among the group.
Chat Noir?
Thanks for reading everyone! I hope you enjoyed it :3 By the way, is the plot advancing too fast?

“Oh yeah and then Lydia taught me how to do this cool trick with the yo-yo I found yesterday-“, said Sophia between a mouthful of salad when she was interrupted by Maggie.
“I swear, if I didn’t know any better, I’d say it sounds like you’re in love with her,” she said with a chuckle.
At this Sophia went bright red, her eyes the size of the plate in which she was eating the food she narrowly avoided choking on.
“W-what I-I’m not- that’s ridiculous-“
“Oh my god, Sophia relax, I’m just kidding,” said Maggie interrupting her for the second time in the past minute.
Sophia laughed nervously, She definitely wasn’t into Lydia, at all, I mean could you imagine? but she did know she was bisexual. She liked girls. She liked boys and she thought nothing of it most of the time, except for every now and then when the old preconceptions of society crept up on her from time to time.
But Maggie’s response left her confused I mean did she say that because she was fine with it? Was it because the idea of two girls being together seemed like a joke?
She quickly pushed those thoughts out of her mind and turned her attention back to trying to make things less awkward.
“Hey mom? Carl and Lydia are doing some shooting practice after Carl’s finished with work, can I join them? I promise I’ll be safe and the practice range is only just outside the gates.”
Maggie sighed and ruffled Sophia’s hair as she stood up to take her plate to the kitchen.
“Sure you can, just promise you’ll be back before it gets dark and if you see more than two roamers, start heading back just in case of a herd, no matter what, okay?”
“Yay! Thank you mom! I’ll be safe I promise!,” said Sophia giving Maggie a quick hug and scoffing down the rest of her dinner.
“I’m going to put Hershel to bed now and I think you should go to sleep too since you’ll need your energy tomorrow,” said Maggie, kissing Sophia on the top of her head and making her way to over to Hershel’s bedroom.
Sophia didn’t really know Lydia all that well. She was the kind of friend you had that you have where you kind know each other but..not really. They’d only ever spent time together briefly and it was mostly just because Carl wanted to hang out with both of them so they just happened to be around each other.
She knew that Lydia and Carl kind of had a thing when they first met. She didn’t know all the details but she knew it was brief and the two of them ended up both deciding they were better off as friends.
It was strange, Carl was her best friend but Lydia, who she’d only known for a little while yet she stuck in her head a lot.
Sophia was awoken by the sunlight that spilled through her bedroom and managed to make its way to her eyes.
“Shit,” she whispered after turning her head to look at the clock on the wall. She was supposed to be meeting Carl and Lydia I’m ten minutes.
After speedily changing into a lilac t-shirt, a flannel over-shirt and jean shorts she rushed out the door, while tying the laces to her left shoe and yelling a quick goodbye to Maggie and Hershel, if they were even home.
She finally arrived at the Earl Stutton’s, her heart racing, her hands on her knees and her head down trying to catch her breath.
She looked up saw and Lydia with her arm rested on Carl’s shoulder which made her feel that funny feeling again that she hated. That feeling of anger that she didn’t understand.
She walked over to them, still a little out of breath.
“You look like you ran here from Alexandria,” Carl joked, “Anyway, I’ve got to stay back and help Earl with some stuff, sorry.”
Sophia felt butterflies erupt in her stomach at that thought of being alone with Lydia and wished she could just cut them out of her. Damn it, maybe Maggie was right..
“Hello...earth to Sophia?,” Carl said waving his hand in front of her face.
“What? Oh, sorry I’m...I’m a bit tired, yeah um yeah that’s fine um...”
“You got your gun?,” asked Lydia.
“Yeah.”
“Then lets go, you lead there way,” Lydia responded.
“Wow you have good aim,” Sophia said in reference to Lydia managing to shoot right on the target on her second try.
“Yeah, Carl said I could ‘give his mom a run for her money’ but I don’t think so,” Lydia responded, smiling softly.
Softly at the idea of Carl, Sophia thought bitterly.
“So um...what’s up with you and Carl, I mean you’re pretty close,” Sophia asked, her heart beating a mile a minute, mentally kicking herself for that question.
“Well I mean I care about him a lot. He’s special to me, he was one of the first people to ever properly care about me,” Lydia answered.
“Yeah. He’s nice,” Sophia responded, shooting her gun immediately afterwards, possibly out of bitterness.
“Yeah I mean, I thought I loved him. I mean I do love him but just not like that you know? He’s the best friend I could ever ask for but...I just don’t feel that way about him. I used to but it’s different.”
“Yeah...he’s special to me too,” Sophia responded, blushing.
“Wait, is that why you just asked me about Carl? so you can snatch him up?,” asked Lydia, harshly.
“What-no-no we’ve been best friends since we were little it’s-it’s not like that,” Sophia stammered.
“Okay, sorry. I guess I care about who you’re into a bit more than I thought-I-I mean like I’m protective over Carl is what I mean.”
“Oh so you think I’m not good enough for your golden boy, huh?,” Sophia said angrily, she didn’t know if she was angry because she was offended or angry at the fact that she was head over heels for someone who was obviously still hung up on her best friend.
“What? No! I never said that! I-,” Lydia stopped, her voice changing from bitter to melancholy.
“Sophia, I-I don’t understand. You obviously don’t like me and if it’s not about Carl then-it must be about me. Why did you agree to do this with me if you don’t like me?,” the hurt in her voice was obvious as it cracked a little while she held back tears.
“What are you kidding? I do like you, Lydia! I like you a lot actually I-“
Sophia stopped talking and gasped as a roamer grabbed her shoulder.
She was quick to move but as she did her gun fell from her hand.
“FUCK!”
Lydia ran and grabbed it from behind, turned it around and stabbed it in the head, it’s body feel on top of her and she pushed it off panting.
“Shit, Sophia are you okay?”, Lydia screamed, she was properly crying now and her front was covered in blood.
“Yeah...I’m okay,” said Sophia in shock, “Thank you if you didn’t...”
“Don’t,” Lydia said solemnly.
“Lydia..your shirt.”
“I’m fine...I’ve had worse,” Lydia responded, drying her tears.
“Lydia, you know Carl’s gonna go crazy if he finds out I almost died please,” Sophia took her flannel over shirt off and handed it to her.
“Yeah you’re right.”
Lydia made quick work of removing her shirt and used the bandana that was around her neck to clean off the blood that had soaked through.
Sophia was red as a traffic light and as flustered as ever, seeing Lydia standing there in nothing but her bra and jeans, panting and rubbing bandana over her not so surprisingly strong body.
“So um...do you think we should continue or head back,” Sophia asked, suddenly very interested in anything around her that wasn’t Lydia buttoning up her flannel shirt.
“Sophia...”
“Um yes?”
“What were you gonna say before that roamer showed up?,” Lydia enquired, moving closer to Sophia.
“Um just that...I-I do like you. I-I like you, Lydia,” Sophia stammered, her eyes taking in every feature of her face.
“Okay...I’m gonna try something,” Lydia responded, so quietly that Sophia wouldn’t have heard it if their faces weren’t two inches apart.
Then they were one inch apart
And then they were none.
Lydia kissed Sophia softly yet desperately. She kissed her like she almost lost her today, she kissed her like she’d liked her for long time but was too afraid to admit it.
Sophia kissed Lydia like she’d been dreaming of this moment, she kissed her like she’d been in denial about her feelings for too long.
Sophia suddenly broke the kiss.
“Shit! How am I supposed to tell me mum that I’ve had my first kiss? HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO TELL HER THAT MY FIRST KISS WAS WITH A GIRL?”
“Do you want your second kiss to be with a girl?” Lydia asked, smirking.
“God yes!” Sophia responded smashing their lips together once again.
Lydia giggled against Sophia’s lips, breaking the kiss.
“I think we should start heading back now,” said Lydia softly, stroking Sophia’s cheek.
“They’re back!” shouted the guard by the gates of Hilltop.
This didn’t just just draw the attention of the guy manning the the gate, as Maggie had been quite worried about Sophia being outside the gates this late, it had gotten dark almost an hour ago.
Carl rushed to the gates as they walked through.
“Ten more minutes and I was about to go out looking for you two-“ he paused
“Is that Sophia’s shirt? Are you holding hands?”
The two of them blushed.
“Lydia, people are staring let go of my hand,” Sophia whispered through her teeth, blushing like crazy as Lydia wrapped her arm around her instead and winked at her.

What would have happened in chapter 2 if you decided to write it?
Eek I’m so sorry I took so long to answer this!
The longer I think about it, the more I think a second part would have really jumped the shark any way I’d have written it, but I did have some thoughts*, which got… uh, kinda long (hence me taking forever to answer your ask), so I’m gonna put them beneath a cut if I can figure out how.
Some of this was sort of charted out in a long chat between me and Py (specifically I think the bit with Papyrus showing up, which I think was her idea?), but that conversation was so long ago it’s been lost to the sands of time (and tumblr chat having no search function), so most of this is new and specific to the version I posted.
I had a couple of scenes in my head that were a little more defined, the rest was just kind of vague, and it never came to a conclusion, really. So I guess, in theory, all of those “Reader goes to Italy and carboloads themself into personal fulfillment, Sans dies of skelesyphilis, and his gf fucks off somewhere” fantasies can still happen. If, you know, by the end of me rambling about this, any of that still sounds, oh god, you know, fuck, appealing, or whatever. If not, then uhhh whoops sorry I don’t have any ending for you at all, my dude.**
Also this hasn’t been beta’d or anything, I didn’t want to give it the same status as the stuff I actually publish, just like, on principle? so like. keep your expectations in check maybe? especially re: some of the most cliche and melodramatic dialogue I’ve written to date lol
The first scene was to take place on Jan 2nd:
Your friend, the one you’re now glad isn’t speaking to you, is standing at your door, anxiously clutching a small, rectangular cardboard box bearing a sticker you recognize as the logo of your favorite bakery. She speaks to you, and you feel your stomach flip.
“Um, so, these are for you. Uh, happy new year, by the way, and um, the frosting probably got a little smushed- you know how high they like to pile it on. But, you know, they’re fresh, so- should be good. Got your favorites.”
She hands you the box and you peek inside. Cupcakes, of course. Half the frosting’s on the lid, like she said, and you stare at them, dumbfounded. Can’t look at her.
She clears her throat.
“I know what I’m like, sometimes. I can be melodramatic and petty and- and self-destructive. I do dumb shit like drive away my closest friend with the silent treatment because I didn’t get the answer I wanted. I’m so sorry. You were right, and, god, furthermore? The entire thing was just… stupid, you know? Can you forgive me?”
You sway on your feet, dizzy.
“Of course.”
She steps forward and hugs you, and as her arms wrap around you, so does an awful panic.
Your cell phone is burning a hole in the pocket of your bathrobe, from the text you had received ten minutes prior, alerting you to your friend’s impending arrival:
Sans: she’s coming over to your place. please don’t tell her anything. i’ll figure something out. sorry to ask you to do this. i’ll make it up to you
Sans: ok that sounded wrong. not what i meant. everything sounds wrong though
Sans: i’m sorry
“Oh, thank you,” she says, sounding more grateful than she should, her scarf tickling your cheek. “That’s such a relief. Thank you.”
Really just laying that guilt on thick. Uhhh let’s see, after that:
You tell her you’re sick just to get her to go away and she believes you because you look horrible and are wearing a bathrobe in the middle of the afternoon
Cue angst about furthering the extent of your dishonesty
The next day she texts you just to “catch up” but in the middle of it, drops that Sans has been more than usually distant. They talked about so much and she knows it’s going to take time for things to get better, but since that first conversation on New Year’s Day, he’s kind of shut down-
But enough about her problems, what’s been going on with you? Oh, Not Much, you tell her. You’re still getting over your cold but you’ve gone back to work. It’s the truth, more or less. You have the sniffles, at any rate, though that’s more due to your daily extended heartbreak/guilt crying alone sessions than any physical malady.
A week later, your friend is back to sending you memes and talking about her job, your favorite shows you watch. Sans is living with her. Everything is normal, on the surface. Sans chimes in on the group chat every now and again, but that’s it. Not another word from him. The awful feeling in the pit of your stomach has faded to a dull ache that only bothers you at night.
Which is why it’s a total surprise when Papyrus shows up on your doorstep one evening and lets himself in. You didn’t even know he was in town. You’ve met him a few times, loved the guy, but he’s not here for a social call.
Well, okay, he is, but it’s not a pleasant one. He is. So. Disappointed. In you. He’s prepared a speech! To express the enormity of your fuckup.
About the 45-second mark of which, you break down sobbing. He stops immediately and grabs you a glass of water and a cool washcloth for your neck.
He apologizes as you calm down, and you have a long talk with him about the hows and the whys. It’s incredibly cathartic, you’ve never told anyone about any of this situation, and you’re drained by the time you’re done. But as he leaves, he has this look on his face and you hate it- pity tinged with trace amounts of leftover dismay, so it’s a relief to lock yourself in for the evening, even if the alternative (i.e. being alone with your thoughts and your guilt and everything else) isn’t much better.
An hour or two later, you get another text from Sans: “i’m sorry again, i didn’t know he was gonna do that.”
Interrupting myself here to say as an aside, so much for a synopsis of my vague concept; this is now going on 800 words. Look at all this work you definitely made me do that I didn’t put on myself at all. Anyway.
Sans text, continued: “he’s in town cuz of me, though, so i think i gotta listen to him. he’s uh saying we should get together and talk about how i”
“hang on”
Five minutes later: “scratch that i’m not listening to him.”
Ten full minutes later: “we can have lunch tomorrow. to talk. if you want. you don’t have to agree to it. i’ll understand.”
It’s about two in the morning when you finally respond: “Where and when?”
He replies immediately.
It’s a good sandwich. A shame you can’t do much more than just poke at it and nibble at the toppings that have fallen out of it onto the wax paper basket liner. And the bag of chips is completely out of the question. You’ve already put them away for later, for when you might eventually start regretting skipping lunch because of the awful somersaults your innards keep doing. Sans’s sandwich isn’t faring much better- he’s twirling his frilly-ended toothpick between his fingers, occasionally poking it into his dill pickle wedge.
Neither of you has said a word past your perfunctory greeting and the order you’d both placed at the counter eight minutes ago. The rest of the sandwich shop doesn’t seem to care, though. Most of its other patrons are absorbed in getting their order and getting out, or making the most of their too-brief lunch hour. It’s noisy, and it would be the perfect setting for the conversation you’re supposed to be having, you credit Sans with that much. If you could just speak.
You’re staring off over his shoulder, at the display rack of different brands of hot sauce, when he startles you by biting off over half of his pickle, chewing, and swallowing with his eyes closed and a sigh.
“thanks for… you know, not telling her yet.”
“I didn’t do it for you,” you say with enough sourness to give that pickle a run for its money.
“no, yeah, i know- i just. yeah. i’ll tell her, though. soon. uh, -ish.”
“Will you tell me when you do it? I don’t think I can take another unexpected visitor, and  I-” you laugh, ”-I’m going nuts checking my phone, panicking at every single notification.”
“‘course. yeah.”
“Okay. Thanks. For that.”
“sure.”
You tear off a piece of sliced turkey that’s hanging out the edge of your sandwich.
“…can i say somethin’?”
“That’s why we’re here, isn’t it?”
“i didn’t- uh, know you had- i just thought you were riding the same wave of… whatever that was, as me.”
He clears his throat.
“i didn’t know you felt that w- i mean, that you had actual feelings for- at least, not until you started sayin’ all those things–”
“–I changed my mind, I don’t want to talk about this anymore.”
He ducks his head.
“yeah, okay.”
You take another bite of your sandwich, chewing as you scramble for something, anything, else to say.
“So. Uh, how’s, um, y'know, everything else?”
He blinks, shakes his head, and laughs.
“what, you really wanna know? or are you askin’ just to ask?”
Shit. No, you don’t really want to know.
“Yeah. I wanna know.”
He leans back, the plastic of the chair back creaking, and looks out the window behind you.
“shit… it’s all… it’s all fallin’ apart on me.”
“I’m sorry,” you say, already a well-honed reflex.
“not your fault, really. in the end. i’m just already tired. a week ago, this’s all i wanted, for everything to go back to normal. but it turns out normal was just a lot of her pretending she could stand me. and we’re not pretending, anymore. so… but that’s supposed to help us sort everything out, right?”
Goddamn your bleeding heart that got you into this in the first place.
“feels capricious of me, right? but if it’s gonna end, why can’t it just end already? but i’m not allowed to give up yet, because that’s not what we’re doing, we’re working through our issues.”
He pushes his basket over to the seat next to him, and folds his arms on the table, head nestled into them.
“even though giving up is all i wanna do anymore,” he says, voice muffled by his sleeves.
“Every relationship requires work, Sans,” you say. Platitudinal, but true, if not particularly helpful.
“but at what point do you cut your losses? is it before or after the seventieth thing this week she tells you you’ve been doing wrong all along that she never bothered to mention to you before? you know she prefers the loose end of the tp to come out underhanded? i didn’t. she’s wrong, but hey, fuck- anything for my baby. i’m tired. i didn’t know it was gonna be like this.”
Underhanded toilet paper rolls? Do you even know who she is?
“i should just go ahead and tell her about this whole thing, already, see if that- i dunno, breaks us beyond repair. but if i do that now when all our wounds are still fresh, i don’t get to say i tried to fix things, and i guess on some level, i need that.”
He rubs his face.
“fuck, listen to me whine. i’m making it sound worse than it is. ”
“Dude, I don’t know. I’m still horrified by the toilet paper thing.”
He snorts.
“i don’t even use the stuff much, so it wasn’t worth makin’ a whole thing out of it.”
“Okay, but I’m fixated on it. It’s like, all I can think about. What the fuck?”
You’re overcome with the strangest feeling- it shouldn’t be so odd to you now, three weeks into your guilt spiraling, but you want to text her about this so badly, to give her grief about it. And if this were a normal situation, if you hadn’t made everything awful, you wouldn’t hesitate. But you’re having a clandestine lunch with her boyfriend to discuss the awful thing you did, and therefore you can’t give her shit about her weird habit you now know about thanks to him, which is what friends do. Friends don’t let friends put the roll on the wrong way without at least dragging them for it for the rest of their natural lives, so can you still even call yourself her friend?
Probably not, huh? That, and the other thing you did. Friends don’t do that, either.
Your smile fades as you start to understand on a much more personal level what he meant. You doubt you’ll be granted the same mercy as him, of working out your issues, and until then you have to live like this, unable to even joke around without it turning bitter. You’re going to lose her, too- you’re going to lose them both, maybe, probably, and the waiting and pretending is only adding to your misery. It’s a hollow kind of wanting, for something to be over and done with, but it’s rooted in you all the same.
You finally decide you’re not going to finish your sandwich, but you wrap it back up in the wax paper liner anyway, and start putting your coat back on.
“Well. Thanks for meeting with me. I think I’d better head back to work, now.”
“you realize we didn’t talk about what happened at all, right?”
You shrug. “Maybe we shouldn’t. Maybe we don’t need to.”
“you don’t- you don’t have anything you wanna say to me.”
You close your eyes and sigh.
“I’m… sorry?”
“shit, yeah, me too.”
“It was a mistake.”
“unequivocally, yeah.”
“I think that about covers it, don’t you?”
He nods silently.
“Then… I’ll see you around.”
You almost make it to the door, leaving him slumped in his seat with his uneaten sandwich. You look outside at the cold, slushy parking lot, check the time, and nearly get in your car and drive back to work. But instead, your feet carry you back to the table, back to Sans.
“I do actually just have one question.”
He looks up at you, and you can see deep into his eye sockets, and the dark semicircles beneath them, how tired he is.
“sure. anything,” he answers.
“If you had known how I felt, would it all have gone- would we be here now, having this conversation? Or would I have gone home before and none of this would have ever happened?”
Your fool brain wants you to continue: Or would you have stayed?
But you already know the answer to that one, so you stop yourself; these questions are dangerous enough, as is.
He actually looks somewhat taken aback.
“i don’t- i dunno. and i dunno how much good speculating about it’s gonna do. what’s done is done.”
“Please. It’s the one answer I feel like I have any right to.”
He shoves his hands in his jacket pockets and leans back.
“yeah. i think i’d have done the same thing.”
Your chair creaks as you fall back into it, defeated.
“Why?”
“what do you mean, why? did it seem like i gave a shit who else i was hurting at the time?”
He slumps a little further down, and in a softer, more soothing tone, says, “what are you after? do i care now that i hurt your feelings? …yeah. not that it really counts for anything.”
“It counts,” you croak.
“hmm.”
He stands, finally.
“guess you’re right, though. i’d better be getting back to work.”
He shrugs on his wool coat and winds his scarf around his neck.
“you uh… you gonna be ok?”
Are you? Feels like… maybe not?
The sobbing starts, even as you will it not to- christ, no, anything but that.
“oh. uh. shit.”
People are staring, now. You hide your face behind your hands, try to even out your voice to reassure him and your new audience that no, really, you’re fine, but it just comes out all the more overwrought for your efforts. Sans is useless, grimacing, hands outstretched towards you, placating, like with a panicking animal, and it reminds you of the conversation you’d had that night, when you’d offered yourself up as a shoulder to cry on.
“you wanna get out of here?” he asks, and you nod, rolling your eyes at your own uninvited histrionics and swiping at your cheeks.
“k,” he says, and when you open your eyes again, you’re sitting on your couch, in your apartment.
“got tissues?”
You swallow.
“Uh, bedroom, but- please don’t go in there, it’s- it’s bad.”
“k.”
He returns a few seconds later with a handful of toilet paper, and you take it from him.
“hey. it’s gonna be okay. y’know why?”
You blow your nose.
“Why?”
“no matter what else happens, you’ll always know: you put the toilet paper on the holder the right way.”
You chuckle weakly into your wad of tissue.
“You’re right. I’ll always have that.”
He sinks down on the couch next to you. Not too close.
You sigh and slump forward, elbows on your knees, calmer now.
“Well, that wasn’t supposed to happen. The- you know, the turning on the waterworks in a sandwich joint. That was embarrassing. I’m embarrassed.”
“happens. plus, i think you’ve earned the right to cry.”
Your chin wobbles again, threatening.
“Oh? I have? Cool. ‘Cuz I don’t know what I have the right to feel, or do, right now. It all feels wrong.”
“yeah. i know,” he mumbles.
“Sometimes I start feeling sad, for me, because of what I’m about to lose because of this? But then- no, can’t do that, because- hey, maybe I should have thought of that before we-” you catch your breath.
“yeah.”
“I’m mad at myself, and I’m pretty okay with that. But then sometimes I think maybe I’m mad at you for like, seven different reasons, and half of those reasons conflict with each other, but I can’t even… stay mad at you like I think I want to.”
You aren’t looking at him, but you can feel his stare.
“like how?”
You poke and prod at your face, trying to relieve some of the tension headache that’s building around your eye sockets and temples.
“Like, as your friend, I’m annoyed that you put up with ALL of her bullshit. You’re such a doormat when it comes to her. But as her friend, I’m so fucking appalled that you’d sleep with me, her best friend, less than a month after the breakup of a like- how many years? Six?”
“…seven.”
“Seven year relationship. Fuck, sorry, not to belabor the point or anything, but- yeah.” You sniffle. “And then- here’s the kicker. Just as me, alone, not relative to anyone else- I keep wishing you’d just fucking stayed in bed after I poured my heart out to you. Like I have any right to feel that. And of all of it, all the shit, that’s the one that sticks the worst, so the rest don’t get a chance to mean anything.”
The second you turn your head to make eye contact with him, he’s there, leaning in, warm. Big old eye sockets looking at you just like you’d wanted for so long.
“i should’ve. i know.”
Your breath leaves you, almost-but-not-quite on a sob, as he kisses you, and everything is right and better, if only for a split second.
“Wait.”
“yeah- yes. ok.”
“What about-” you can’t bring yourself to speak to him more than a few inches removed from the kiss, as if tethered there by a spell, “-what about everything you just said, what- this isn’t fixing things.”
“no.”
“And I can’t- you can’t do this to me again.”
“i won’t. it won’t be like last time.”
“You can’t promise that,” you say as matter-of-factly as you can manage, given the circumstances.
“keep thinkin’ about how i can’t remember the last time i felt the way i did when you were sayin’ all that stuff about me.”
Your cheeks flush even harder, as if the rest of you hadn’t yet gotten the memo.
“That’s called an orgasm.”
The ridge above his nasal cavity scrunches up pleasantly when he laughs.
“We shouldn’t.  If it was wrong before, it’s so much worse now.”
“i know.”
You cast your eyes aside to your front door, then down to where your hands are almost touching as you lean towards each other on the couch.
“You’re so full of shit, you know that?” you ask. “Fuck you for making me fall for it twice.”
Your eyelids flutter shut as you pull him in by the back of his neck.
THEN YOU FUCK AGAIN!!! WHAT ARE YOU THINKING!!! HOW COULD YOU!!!
hehe
He keeps his promise, more or less. It’s not her he has to run off to, at the end. You both have half a day of work ahead of you. You’re both late, and it’s as good an excuse as any for you to pretend he won’t still be going home to her, later.
You still have questions. You can’t focus at work.
He never promised much of anything, you now realize. It felt like he was offering much more, but- so what? Is he actually done with her? After everything? What does this look like tomorrow? A week from now?
What, you seriously think he’s going to leave her for you? Only if she kicks him out, you think, bitterly. Which makes you what, exactly? A consolation prize for his neglected ego?
You call him right as you’re getting off work, but hang up before he can answer. You want the truth??? You can’t handle the truth!!!
Things get better as they get worse. He starts coming over to see you, at least once a day. He stays an hour or two when he can. He talks with you in bed.
Yours, now, you think, sometimes.
You don’t ask him when he’s going to tell her. He’s choosing you, so he has to, right?
He will. Soon.
*Now I’m looking back at the beginning of all this and I’m like-
Tumblr media
Some thoughts??? Bitch! You just wrote most of the damn thing! And after you said you weren’t gonna!
…So CLEARLY I had like, a little more I evidently wanted to say about this fucking thing. So there you go???
GOD that was a lot of dashes in there though, huh? I didn’t even try to keep the number down.
Oops hehhe
But, uh, yeah! I don’t know how this ends! Or even, at the risk of sounding a bit pretentious, if it ends! Maybe everyone learns from their mistakes and suffers the consequences! Or maybe nobody does! Or maybe it’s a weird combination of learning and not learning and suffering and not suffering because it’s supposed to be like, way more complicated than that.
**Or maybe reader and Sans’s gf wind up auditioning for the same local network tv wrestling show and they have lots of sexual wrestling tension together and also reader has like a will-they-won’t-they thing with an 80s disaster caricature of Marc Maron and they both bond with a group of wonderful interesting women and get to create something bigger than themselves!
God, I love GLOW. Maybe just go watch GLOW instead of this, it’s like, basically the same thing only with more eighties vibes and less skeletons and more women’s wrestling and less magical penises.
So really, not the same thing at all except for the one plot point of sleepin’ with your best friend’s dude that they kind of share, but very very good, you know?
Anyway! I love getting asks (I apparently love them so much that I can’t help myself and end up writing almost an entire chapter just to answer them), and fleshing out all the vagueness a little more without the self-imposed pressure of having to finish it into something publishable was really fun. So thanks for this ask!
