hi! i've been reading some of your older fics and was wondering if there's any merit in watching buffy for the first time in the year 2024
This may not be obvious, but this is actually an extremely complicated and highly subjective question. I'll try to go on for too long.
As background: my mother loved Buffy and its spin-off Angel growing up. It was our Bible (besides the actual Bible). Not kidding, she was on the forums and fan groups and wrote fanfiction for it and everything (These days, she's really into kdramas and Asian dramas, and calls me about how the Thai seem like big fans of gay people). So I'm quite biased.
BTVS is both a product of its times and ahead of its times. It was a show about feminism and the struggle of living in this world as a woman, when very few shows were doing that. It was the first show to have a long-lasting lesbian couple, and the first show to depict a kiss between them. For better or for worse, it was one of the codifiers of broody vampire boyfriend. It was pretty unafraid to be experimental in a lot of what it did. It had incredibly complex and nuanced character work and growth that I still aspire to. Spike's arc is still matched in quality only by Avatar's Zuko. Angel's long term arc, from Buffy to his spin-off series, still makes him one of the most complex characters on TV. It had the most complex depiction of depression on TV at the time and I still think it's one of the best. I think the show had very high highs.
It also had very low lows. Some of the feminism is problematic in retrospect. The sapphic couple has a rather famous element that was severely problematic. There are, overall, some deeply atrocious arcs that I can appreciate objectively but not in practice. Xander: a whole-ass character aged awfully. On a meta level, the workplace conditions were bad (thanks, Whedon.) There are no people of color. The spoiler's sake I won't go into detail on this, but in general the good stuff was so influential and the bad stuff was just awful.
I think these days people tend to brush off the entire thing because it's Whedon. That is more than fair. But I'd also say that Whedon & Buffy is extremely similar to Brian Michael Bendis & Ultimate Spider-Man. Bendis was fantastic at writing sassy, bouncy, permanently stressed-out teens - issue was, he wrote entirely different serious adult characters the way he wrote these sassy teens. Same with Whedon: the annoyingly constant quips are perfect for Buffy, because that's who the characters are. They're awful in Marvel, because Steve Rogers is not Xander. Kinda similarly, Buffy was genuinely feminist for 90s TV - issue is, Whedon has not grown or developed his views, and now his works feel so sexist (oh my fucking god why did you treat Natasha like that). After a certain point it's egotistical: you're writing like that because you're Joss Whedon and it's how you write, not because it's what's best for the characters and story. But it was really important to me to get the character voices right, and it's freaking difficult to endlessly write dialogue that distinct, full of voice, witty, and clever.
I think BTVS & Angel TV's greatest influence on my writing is how intensely character-driven both of those shows were, and how intricate the characters were. What every character did was something they would do, if that made sense. Even the stuff I hated to watch, that made me uncomfortable, was the culmination of so much (usually). I think I also picked up the constant wit and humor lol. On a personal level, the conversations I would have with my mother where she broke down the character motivations and composition of the story was my first exposure to looking at storytelling from an analytical perspective and a framework of critical analysis, which was an approach I carried into the rest of the media I consumed and that was the primary reason I was able to become a decent writer. Thanks, Mom. Have fun with your kdramas.
TL:DR: There is merit, especially if you care about good character work. There are things about it that may make you want to drop it, which is extremely valid. Season 1 is rough but interesting, Season 2 and 5 are the best, Season 3 is pretty good, Season 4 and 7 skippable, and Season 6 is........epic highs, epic lows......
#my asks#the basic premise of Buffy is âwhat if the monsters and demons that plagued the psyche of a teen girl were realâ#which is a very simple thing but the focus on character ended up creating such a complex story#and it highly influenced how i try to have the physical conflict mirror the emotional conflict#externalization of emotional conflict is great#i dont talk about it much but i was genuinely very proud of that story#it mattered a lot to me that I hit the character voices EXACTLY#and that i was earnest and honest in exploring the themes of buffy and what made it important#i think you can tell that it was written by somebody who loves buffy at the bottom of her heart#it very much is a âhow meg would write buffyâ thing#I wrote Angel as an awkward younger version of his self from ATVS S5#when we as the audience has lost all respect for him lmfao#but what really stuck with me is a major theme and line from angel:#âif nothing we do matters then all that matters is what we doâ#and colliding angel's nihlism with buffy's desperation to live a meaningful life was excellent#i did what i wanted to do very precisely and that is the joy of hitting a level of writing skill where you can do that#btvs#buffy the vampire slayer

hazbin hotel review (first four episodes, spoiler free)
i literally only watched the show to see if it was any good outside of the ads and the hate on twitter and... its very hit or miss
im not gonna address ANY of the controversies in this show because it will lead to a biased opinion, but if you wanna look into the controversies, go ahead. this is only reviewing the show itself. not the producers, just the show. the cut underneath is gonna be long so be warned
the humor is either pretty good or very bad. and most of the time, most jokes are dragged down by ones before it or proceeding it. i personally find some visual gags funny, but most of the jokes revolve around swearing, sex, and violence. if you're into that, i won't judge. but i personally really don't like it.
the animation can be really beautiful at times! but i've also noticed a lot of animation errors. nothing major, but the most common one i've seen is that many charcters have a different lineart color than other characters (for example, angel dust as pink line art, while charlie has black) and it makes it look as if the characters are on completely different planes. theres a scene in the first three minutes of the show where charlie is holding onto vaggie, and it looks very unnatural to me. this isnt to mention the character design, as well. personally, i love the designs for characters like Velvette, Valentino, Nifty, and Sir Pentious, as well as a lot of the background characters. however, i don't like the designs of characters like Vox, Alastor, Angel Dust, and many more. the silhouettes of many characters end up looking extremely similar, and with the mostly red backgrounds in the show with most character's colors pallettes being shades of red, it makes it hard to distinguish the background from the character itself. the backgrounds are BEAUTIFUL, though. they're genuinely stunning, and i love the art done for them. it makes the world feel lived-in.
the show is a musical, and many of the songs are either very good or very annoying or forgettable. my favorite of the few we get is alastor and vox's song; i love the fast pace, the bickering between the two, and their general "tv and video" and "radio star" theme. on the other hand, both songs in episode three are extremely forgettable to me. i watched the episode not even an hour ago and i don't remember either of them. i also find Poison a very annoying pop song, and i really don't like that it's been stuck in my head ever since i heard the chorus. but, despite that, the music is usually the most consistently good thing throughout the show.
the voice acting is fine. some voice actors do great! alastor and husk have very unique voices, and they fit the character very well. however, my main criticism with the voice acting is angel dust. the accent is very jarring to listen to, and it feels pretty fake. again, very hit or miss.
the plot itself is what i don't like. the show often stops in its tracks to dump information on you, and it feels very shoehorned in. some episodes also have very generic plots, especially episode three. i could predict what was going to happen every step of the way. the structure makes it feel almost like it's for a younger audience, and not for adults.
overall, i personally think the show has its highlights, but i wouldn't go out of my way to watch any more. there are much better shows for mature audiences out there. if i were to rate the series, it would be around a five or a six for me. it's not atrocious, and if you enjoy the show for what it is, i completely understand. there are some great moments in the show! however, i wouldn't recommend this show for someone who likes adult animation.
tl;dr, it's a fine show, i have a very mixed opinion of it. wouldn't recommend unless you want some pretty good songs and some nice animation.

You started as an intern. A beaming smile on your lips most days, always happy to be in the studio with Mic when he was teaching you the ins and outs of radio hosting.
You'd majored in music business, the end goal in mind of writing and releasing your own music, though most of your plans had fallen through, the only opportunity to get you back on your feet after college being this deal you couldn't pass up.
Co-hosting with Present Mic on his own radio show.
The offer had actually been given to you by one of your superiors at the studio you worked at, having seen your optimism when it came to writing music and your love of music in general.
They wished you good luck and would always welcome you back if things didn't go so well. But you kept your head up high and marched into that studio ready to take on the world alongside the loud blonde.
And down the line, three years later, you were surprised to say the least.
"Your coffee as usual." Hizashi sets down the patriotic blue U.A. thermos sent out to the teachers at the beginning of the year. Since you'd practically moved in 'unofficially' with Mic, unofficially because you weren't technically allowed to stay due to the fact you didn't work for the school, rather employed by Mic himself in his private studio, but you were the tiny exception since you did technically work in the school.
"Thanks! Hey, I was wondering if you could check this new thing I've been working on and give me some criticism, it's just a rough draft, the lyrics just kind of came to me after a shot or two at Vlad's birthday party the other night." You giggled as you tossed him the flash drive containing your latest project, the sensitive information contained on the tiny disc landing in the palm of your boyfriend's hands.
"Another song? You're blessing my ears so early in the morning. I'm dreaming! Pinch me!" He teases. Mic's been the biggest supporter of your music since he overheard the pipes you had.
You'd had that kind of night the second week of your internship, battling the oncoming hangover after drinking with your cool new pro-hero teacher friends, your thoughts turning to lyrics as you worked in the studio, the only light being the small lamp on the side Mic kept when he worked late too.
He'd forgotten his room keys in the studio again, something you realized he did often and as he stopped by to pick them back up, that's when he heard you. You sounded so angelic, almost as if you were some sort of angel.
At first, he thought maybe it was just a recording or some sort of dare he say, Melodyne filter while you were messing around in the mic at night.
But you weren't. Your authentic voice shell-shocked him, and he sort of listened to you the entire night until you nearly pissed your pants turning around and seeing him.
âYeah, itâs nothing special really-â Youâre back to reality as Mic quickly has his headphones over his ears, a large grin on his lips as he listens, his fingers tapping away to the beat already.
You work on other tasks, filtering through requests and putting them in the queue while Mic listens to your song, his heart pounding. You were so talented and heâd wish youâd give yourself a bit more credit. You have what it takes to make it big, and heâd support you every step of the way.
âYou know with this and the other tracks you have, youâd have enough to push out an EP. All you need is a bit of marketing and producing, and Iâd be more than willing to help!â Mic smiles, wheeling over to you, pressing an encouraging peck to your cheek.
âIt sounds great, but who would wanna listen to what I write?â You giggle, toggling an advertisement as you glance over at the blonde.
âHow about this, You let me help you, Iâll spread the trial around here at work and if it gets good reviews, we publish.â Hizashi is nothing short of persuasive, and for the rest of the week he has you in his studio, adding layer after layer, fine-tuning and weeding out bits of the collection of songs youâd written until you have an EP.
Long nights fueled by coffee, water, and tea, and takeout eventually land you with the very first copy of your own EP.Â
In your hands, itâs palpable. Itâs real. It doesnât have any cover art, or a title, let alone who sang it, but Mic hands you a sharpie and you feel this fire coursing through your veins.
You feel more than accomplished.
You scribble some title down that youâd work on later and messily sign your name for Mic to make copies and then throughout the next week, youâve got dozens of messages flooding your inbox telling you to drop it on some streaming platforms.
And the following night Mic is consoling your tears as you hit your first 100 streams.Â
âIâm so proud of you.â He coos, kissing your cheeks, wiping your tears away with his kisses, patting you on the head.
âYouâre so cheesy.â You tease him.
âSays you! You named an entire song after me.â Mic huffs, crossing his arms over his chest.
âWhat if âmy belovedâ was about Marty?â You giggle. Marty, the sparkly, beautiful, elegant, beta-fish youâd adopted as the studio mascot swam around in his tank, decked out with super cool aquatic music themed stuff.
âYou wouldnât dare!â Mic laughs, his long blonde hair sweeping over his shoulders.Â
âYour hair always looks so nice down.â You snuggle into him, your fingers twisting around the ends. Hizashi shakes his head and stares down at you.
âAnd youâre as radiant as ever, my love.â Hizashi pulls you into him, snuggling his head into your neck, placing a gentle kiss to your skin as he holds you near to him.
âDo you sing, âZashi?â You ask quietly.
âNo comment.â Mic giggles, his laughs tickling your skin.
âWould you work on a song with me?â You ask sweetly.
âI would love to.â
Callers chime in every so often for requests, since Mic loves to annoy the listeners by playing your EP track by track almost daily. You have to knock some sense into him telling him that thereâs a quota to fill and while you love how he supports you, youâve got them stuck in your head too.
And when you play them every so often, your heart warms when someone requests one of yours to play. Even more so, when your songs rise to much more notable fame, youâre working on your own album, with the lovely producing of Mic, and it even features a lovely duet between the two of you.
In fact, something youâd found out with having so many connections to pros, was the amount of hidden talent.
Youâd requested a song with Kyoka Jiro, the beautiful voice youâd heard at the school festival had belonged to her and youâd been wanting to work with her since she also shared a love for music, and though she was young, she seemed rather happy to sing, even if she mightâve been shy about it first.
An unlikely duo mightâve come from a dare, Hawks. While he was rather against the idea at first, his voice was smooth and mellow, and it clashed with yours perfectly for some sort of sappy anti-romantic love song. Whatever the case, it made charts.Â
But Mic continued to be your biggest supporter, no matter how or if you got big. Youâd always find your way back into his arms, messing around with him on the radio show, and dodging paparazzi whenever you two left campus.

Spike and Faye Pairing Analysis
March 2021
Ah the hit or miss pairing of the century! If you donât love it, you probably hate it lol. Iâm a very analytical person so I love analyzing works of art and overall enjoy deep discussions about them too. I have SO much to say when it comes to Cowboy Bebop (and oh I plan to), but I have decided to start with my very own OTP. Here, I am not really going to discuss Spike and Fayeâs feelings for each other, but rather why I think people are drawn to this pairing and why I think they're totally valid. Get ready for a long read!đ
â ïžSPOILER WARNING!!! [Major Cowboy Bebop and the movie Out of the Past spoilers]â ïž
First off, letâs clear something up. I am confident most of us can agree that Spike was in love with Julia. Some people assume Spike and Faye fans are deranged and disregard Spike and Juliaâs romantic relationship to try and make something of Spike and Faye that never was. While some people may have their various theories and opinions on this, generally, I donât think anyone denies Spikeâs love for Julia. As we will see, this pairing is not really driven by who loves who...letâs first look on the surface.
I donât know your experiences with the series, but in mine, every time I show this to people it never fails for someone to say something along the lines of,
âWait, they donât end up together?â
âWhy didnât he kiss her!?â
âHe should have stayed with her...â
and so fourth.Â
Naturally, this pairing catches many eyes.Â
Think about it, you are given two really cool, really hot and really deep characters that are really fun to see together! There are so many parallels between the two and they are arguably the strongest characters of the bunch. Granted, you can agree with this and still not ship them, but these aspects are part of what opens up the door for many fans of the pairing.
However, there is certainly more to this pairing than them simply looking good together right? As the years pass and Iâve now seen the show multiple times, my understanding of it has evolved in many areas, Spike and Faye included.Â
Spike and Faye really couldnât have ended up together. Sure, itâs a nice thought, but It would have been an entirely different show if they had. I donât feel that the show should have happened any other way and I donât think many other fans would either.Â
So, what am I saying here?
Whatâs the point of this paring if I donât think they should have ended up together?Â
It is what's so frustrating about them, yet keeps you coming back and what honestly validates this pairing in my opinion. Spike and Faye are not driven by what is, but rather, what could be. Â
I personally feel the themes of classic film Noir are not discussed enough when it comes to Cowboy Bebop! This is one of the show's major influences, especially when it comes to the plot and characters.
One of the common tropes of a film noir is that of a protagonist who is drawn back into his past and ultimate doom, usually by the âseductionâ of a femme fatale. In these movies, the women are either a femme fatale [devious, dangerous, mysterious, greedy, troubled, or unreliable] or a woman of virtue [reliable, dutiful, trustworthy, conventional and loving].Â
I am going to use the 1947 classic, Out of the Past to make my comparisons from here on out.
In Out of the Past, Jeff is a former detective who gets caught up in a love triangle between a gangster and his girlfriend Kathie, sound familiar? He attempts to run away with her, but is betrayed and runs off to start a new life in a new town. Here, he meets Ann and falls in love with her, but of course, his past catches up to him and he is drawn back into the world of criminals (largely by Kathieâs involvement). This ultimately results in his and Kathieâs deaths and Annâs heartbreak.Â
Even though Kathie is the femme fatale in this movie, I found myself comparing her more to Juliaâs role in the show, than to Fayeâs and I found that Faye actually fit best in Annâs role (this is a bit unusual considering Faye is typically seen as the femme fatale of this show).
Does that mean I think Julia was as ill intentioned as Kathie or that Spike fell in love with Faye? Well, not exactly, letâs look at it a bit further.
âThe kind of beautiful, dangerous ordinary that you just canât leave alone...Like an angel from the underworld or a devil from paradise.â
Most of what we get about Julia is from Spikeâs point of view. From this, we learn she is at the center of Vicious and Spikeâs conflict, but aside from that she is basically depicted as âThe Virtuous Womanâ of a noir. The colors around her are warm and she is shown caring for Spike. There is an innocence and modestly about her as well.
Yet, when we finally do meet Julia, we get a different image. We know she is tied up with dangerous men, but is she herself a dangerous woman?
She is certainly capable of betrayal.Â
Suddenly she is a bad-ass-gun-toting woman in leather and black, surrounded by hues of grey and dark blue. Intentional or not, Julia is a major part of what lures Spike back into the past and ultimately to his death. In this case, Julia is the femme fatale of Spikeâs story and thus, their relationship is doomed from the start.
Faye, on the other hand, is portrayed in somewhat of a contrast. When we first meet her, she is the clear cut femme fatale, appearing cunning, strong willed and seductive. However, we soon find that she has quite a bit of kindness and naivety hidden behind her facade. She uses the former tactics as a way of emotional (and probably physical) protection. Gren points this out in his conversation with her.Â
Gren,Â
âYouâre just afraid theyâd abandon you so you abandoned them. You distanced yourself from the whole thing.â
As the show progresses, we start to see less of her âfemme fatale natureâ and something more genuine. Think about it, between Hard Luck Woman and RFB Part 2 we donât see much of Faye as her typical conniving or unreliable self, aside from changing the course of the Bebop maybe. Sure she takes off, but it isnât at all for the same reasons she did in Jupiter Jazz or Speak Like a Child, for example.Â
I would argue we actually see her more trustworthy and caring than ever. Since I donât want to spend too much time talking about Fayeâs character development (not here at least) Iâll give one example of this.Â
When she returns to the Bebop after her encounter with Julia in RFB Part 1, she gives Spike the message, even though the outcome might hurt her (i.e. he leaves and/or dies). While she does first say âItâs gonna cost you,â she doesnât really mean it because she tells him without hesitation only moments later.
This isnât to say Faye good, Julia bad. Both women have their layers and even though we know way more about Faye, I donât get the impression that Julia is selfish and cunning like Kathie was. But I do get the feeling she was enclosed in a world of crime and betrayal the way Kathie was. We really only know the basics of Spike and Juliaâs situation. Who knows the details like motive or how long it lasted etc. etc. We can only speculate...
There is a scene towards the end of Out Of The Past, where Kathie tells Jeff to go away with her. This time it is her asking him, just like Julia asks Spike. During this she mentions,
âI never told you I was anything but what I am, you just wanted to imagine I was. Thatâs why I left you.â
This got me thinking...did Spike imagine Julia as something she wasnât? Or something he wanted her to be that she just couldnât be?Â
It could explain why we get such contrasted images of her.
There are themes of this âdreamlikeâ relationship between Jeff and Kathie, similar to Spike and Juliaâs âIt was all a dream.â
The two of them were going to âlive and be free,â probably something neither of them knew how to do and most likely wouldnât have been able to get away with.
When Jet asks Spike if he can just forget the past, this is his answer.
Spike,
âThere was a woman. For the first time in my life I saw a woman that was truly alive. At least thatâs what I thought. She was the part of me I had lost, that part that was missing, that I had been longing for.â
I always wondered about this, because Spike is clearly talking about Julia, but right after is when Faye shows up. To me, that spoke volumes...
Faye is a woman who is terribly human and terribly alive.
Going back to Faye and Ann, I find their similarities shine not so much in the âVirtuous Woman,â concept, but rather in Annâs dedication to Jeff and her optimism for the future. She is also the last person to talk to Jeff before he leaves for the final time, as if he were being presented with one last alternative. Spike spends his last moments with Faye as well, in which she basically begs him not to go and keep him in the present that she has now discovered for herself. She may be stuck, but she is definitely someone that yearns for human connection, love, and life.
The problem is, Spike and Faye are both set in opposite directions. Herâs leads to a future and Spike knows this because he points it out early on (My Funny Valentine). He also knows, his most likely does not. He has already dug himself too deep into this hole, if you will, that there is really no turning back.Â
But letâs say none of that was an issue? What could be?
I sat and watched this movie (Out of the Past) with my mom. She didnât know anything about it and didnât know why I was watching it. I wanted her genuine reaction. The whole time she was getting mad at Jeff until the very end. I asked her why and she said that she wanted him to be able to live happily with Ann. I explained to her why he had to do what he did. She understood this, but still couldnât help but be sad at how things turned out for him, when they could have been good.
Even though Kathie and Jeff are the âlovers,â of this movie, you donât really want them to end up together. Forget that Kathie has a devious nature, regardless, you know where it has to end and you donât want to see your hero die.
Like Kathie, Julia symbolizes Spikeâs inevitable doom and Like Ann, Faye symbolizes his possible future.Â
âIâll be with you till the endâ
âYouâre the one still tied to the past Spike!â
âWhy do you have to go? Where are you going? What are you gonna do, just throw your life away like it was nothing?!â
Itâs two sides of a sad coin...
We want Spike to have a future and because we love the characters of the show, it would be really great if he could have it with them, but that is where the tragedy is. It's only an idea we can think about, a possibility presented to us as it was to Jeff and Spike before their deaths.
The bottom line is, when it comes to Spike and Faye you are really only given a taste. You are not given what you expect to see, which is why I say this ship is driven by what could be. As it is with most of the character relationships in the show, no major breakthroughs are made until the very end, when it's too late. Then it just feels like such wasted potential, but sometimes in life, that's how it is. And thus, we have been given a very classic noir here ladies and gentlemen!
So no, I donât think people miss the mark when they ship Spike and Faye, nor do I find they invalidate the show by any means. I kind of like that Watanabe switched it up and didnât do the expected, but left us those subtle hints. He didnât outright give Spike another lover, but he gave us someone that represents what he could have. Kind of does that with the crew as a whole too!
UGH. I love-hate this show and I love this pairing! Thank you for reading my thoughts and I know this may not be the case or reasoning for everyone, but just based on what I have seen around the community and where this show draws inspiration, this is what I have concluded. I didnât get into Spike and Fayeâs feelings for each other because it gets a little more theoretical there, but I would like to do a post on my thoughts on that as well sometime. I also didnât touch too much on Spikeâs reasoning for choosing to face Vicious in the end, just because I know that will only lead into a whole other analysis lol. But you know I have my thoughts on that and certainly plan to share them đ Also, I know I basically spoiled it, but Out of the Past is such a great movie!! I think if youâre a fan of this show it's definitely worth a watch! There are so many more parallels to Cowboy Bebop that I didnât even mention. Anyways, thanks again and talk to you soon!

Okay, so last post I was giving Lucifer 5B some credit for getting me interested and intrigued about a shitty character, so, as all things should be balanced, here comes the other side of the question. I'll say right off the bat that Lucifer was never a show I took seriously, all at once because of the tone, the way they chose to develop and delve into the themes, the monster-of-the-week format (though also done in spn, there it's redeemed by the darker tone and more subtle theme-development. Obviously, this is S1-S5 I'm talking about) and again the overall way this world works. I've been known to accuse Cobra Kai and even Breaking Bad for coincidence-bending, but they don't even come close to the level of Lucifer here. Then, of course, there's how easy everything is, like a bloody sled on ice: drugs - no problem, kill someone - no problem, infiltrate a mafia group - no fooking problem. How? Well, glaze over that, it's not that important. Except it is. Remember how in that same Breaking Bad Walter's team spent considerable chunks of the show planning, hiding evidence, preparing, measuring little details, diligently covering up their tracks. And they were only involved in a measly drug manufacturing business. Imagine the shit Lucifer runs, with crime bosses, drugs, demons and prostitutes piling out of his front door. Obviously it's a show about angels and demons, and the realism isn't the focus of the program, but still, these things matter. There's always a convenience to it. Like, oh, you need to infiltrate the Russian mafia or some shit? Don't worry, I know a guy - and poof, problem gone. That's not even to mention the universe bending out of shape all around Lucifer, everyone (Chloe especially) putting up with his humiliating bullshit, the fact that he would be kicked out the police in anything even remotely resembling real life, that the mc's get away with almost everything, the unrealistic dialogue that no human irl ever speaks, the second-hand embarrassment, the cheesy "morale" speeches, the dull, predictable cases that are all done by the same formula... and more. So okay, there's a lot, a lot, of problems with this show. Which is why no one really takes it that seriously, we all know it's kind of trashy. But "kind of trashy" is one thing. Now, when season 5 introduces a genuine "evil twin" that we're meant to take with even a bit of seriousness, in the footsteps of such chef d'oeuvres as Dispicable Me 3, when that twin is the most caricature-like villain in recent history, when the allmighty is a buffoon with half a brain, forget omniscient, and isn't even in-line with the stuff he's done before, when one of the main cast is offed as though mid-sentense, with no lead-up, no foreshadowing, no preamble, like a toss of a dice, when the main character is on a race to become God himself, and his love interested Mrs God, and when, oh, Jesus fucking Christ, just stop already! I truly wonder if the writer's room a big dart board with all these drunk-ass ideas stuck onto it, and they blind throw to make the next season. It's finally hitting me now, as I'm writing this, what on god's green earth I watched yesterday.
Why does Lucifer need to become God? Why does a war in Heaven even have to be introduced? Why not focus of the more intricate inter-personal conflicts on Earth, on the characters and their mentalities, on those meaningful arcs that hold actual importance, and emotion, and down-to-earth (lol), well, meaning again. Why do we need a heavenly war? Why does Lucifer need the approval of the angels, when the moral seems to be that he makes himself who he is, not his status, not his people, not his past and not the Silver City (an excellent moral, by the way, so credit where it's due. This self-actualisation business is the second best thing in the whole show)? I get that this is why the majority vote doesn't work, but then what does work? Are they ment to self-actualise into becoming God? Now, I'm aware it's left uncertain whether Luci really is God, so I won't go there for now, but then we have the issue of his resurrection. Was it a reward for self-sacrifice? That wouldn't fit so well, considering all the previous sacrifices that were much more impressive than this one. And what's the philosophy behind that - he's acting out of love? But to what end, if by dying he practically fucked all the other people on Earth, including the very same Chloe he just brough back down? Are these really the qualities for a God to have?
Or did he once again self-actualise, but this time he actualised himself to life? That would truly be a stake-killer. I saw a theory that he finally saw himself as worthy of Heaven, which doesn't quite link to coming back to life. Well, these are perhaps, once again, speculations, and maybe this will be cleared up next season. As for Lucifer's God status, it's a shitty move on the writers' part. Not only was the execution rushed, but thematically, again, Lucifer becoming God to feel worthy of Chloe is nonsense. From a plot and theme standpoint, why does this need to happen? This Godly status holds no meaning, no emotional worth, it's not fullfilling, not symbolic of anything fitting other than that same old "bad to good" and I guess the irony of the Devil becoming God, but the irony is an empty one if it has no real meaning. Which is the case. The whole thing is empty of substance, and I don't know why they went there. You know, it's hollow anyway, not least because Lucifer really doesn't deserve it. Even this season, he is nothing but a child - he acts and thinks like a child, he unchangeably does the same "projecting" bs from season to season to season with no actual sign of emotional maturity other than that in the words of other characters. But you can say he's different all you want, it's not gonna work if the subtle signs of his change aren't there. Say, imagine if Endeavor kept running his mouth about atonement, but kept dutifully abusing his kids - this is that. And yeah, Lucifer loves Chloe in his own way, cares about her, and even comes out of his self-absorbed little world for her, which by the way bugged me about their uneven relationship since season 1 (you know, treating her like shit with a flimsy excuse and then "making up" for it with a grand gesture of sacrifice or a round of angsty suffering. Time after time, every time.)
And finally, of course, there's the issue of how inconsiderate it is to Chloe for him to become God. I mean, it's dead obvious no relationship will be possible there, not without becoming even more unhealthy than it already seems. Themathic significance and meaning aside, even then, even in-universe, it's a shitty thing Lucifer does, again, for himself. So that he feels worthy of Chloe. What she feels, once he's made it his goal to do something, essentially doesn't matter anymore. And the plot fascilitates this splendidly, I mean, she always forgives him without fault like a well-oiled machine. Always, whatever he does, and it's gotten old a long time ago. We know Lucifer can do anything, anything at all, and he will be forgiven - by Chloe, by Maze, by Dan, by Linda, by Amenadiel, by anyone that he needs to forgive him. You'll be lucky if they don't do it the same episode, and extraordinarily lucky if it takes them three or four.
There are many other things to discuss this season, like Dan's ridiculously badly written death, Chloe's whole character stagnation, the, khm, the musical episode, the saturaday morning cartoon villain problem, the fact that Michael manages to descieve an omniscient being, and God himself. I might do those separately, might not, we'll see, as those aren't nearly as interesting to dissect as the above.
Aaaand, anyway, if he is now God, I strongly suspect they'll play the angle of "even though he's God, he stills feels shitty, as true self-love/worth comes from elsewhere" and the usual thing.

Empires on the Horizon Epilogue
Jason is a CEO: Epilogue
When i started this fic (around 9 months ago-- holy hell we could have had a whole human in that time) i didnât expect it to go in the directions it did or to produce the characters and story it did. While itâs not one of my more action-packed fics it is still very special to me because 1. itâs my first jason centered fic (of which we donât have much of); 2. itâs my first really long multi-chap (the longest before this was 10 parts); 3. i got to explore so many of my crackships and dynamics of friendship i may not have been able to if we (for example) stuck to canon; 4. most importantly i love this fic because it started out (the very first chapter) as an original story that just was not going anywhere but when i decided to make it a fanfic, suddenly ideas were pouring from my fingers like wine from a split barrel. these characters feel as much mine as they are Rickâs (which is a dangerous path to go down and iâm not actually claiming theyâre mine-- gods please donât sue me). in short i love this fic dearly, iâm so proud of how far all these little babies have come (especially jason) and i hope you feel even a smidge the joy i feel over this, as you go on to read the very soft conclusion to Jason Grace as CEO.

There was something almost magical in the gleaming silhouette of the Manhattan skyline. There was something hopeful about it too.Â
Jason Grace stepped out of his car, relishing in the sound of the gravel crunching under his feet and the babble of people all around him. His suitâ a deep blue, dark enough to look black, and glittering with tiny silver diamantes that looked like starsâ clung to his shoulders and hugged his legs. The theme of the evening was âStarry Nightâ. He figured coming as the actual night was accurate enough. Drew and Silena had done a beautiful job on his outfit, to no-oneâs surprise. He would see them here tonight, along with their husband, and the rest of his friends. And tomorrow, oh tomorrow, he would be off to Rome, with the man that filled his life with overwhelming light.
âJase,â Someone called out from the darkness, âAre you hiding from us because you put two different shoes on again and are too embarrassed to say?â
âShut up Annabeth,â He laughed, âIâm coming.â
He walked towards the group of silhouettes, making out Leo and Annabeth, and Nico and Will, and coming from behind them were the dressmakers and their Charles. Hazel and Frank would be making an appearance later in the night.
âYou all look beautiful.â He smiled, hugging them, kissing cheeks and foreheads, relishing in their closeness and their comfort, as he has always done. And they did in fact look beautiful. Annabeth in a dress of blue swirling around her and pooling at her feetâ the colours matched the sapphire on her ring finger; Leo in a matching floor-length skirt and a sheer polo-neck that showed off every clean brown line of his skin; Nico and Will, in contrast, were complete opposites, the former in a black suit with silver jewellery, and the latter in an off white with gold accents; Silena, Drew and Charlie all had on suits with various parts of the galaxy embroidered in gold, threading a spectacular tapestry through the emerald green. All in all, his friends were really hot.
âYâall ready?â Will drawled, tilting his head to the entrance of the hotel a little way away.
âLetâs go celebrate!â He winked in response.
And then theyâre walking towards the bright lights, launching into conversations and updates and work and jokes. It was familiar in the way driving home after a long time away was, or catching a waft of the specific smell of your elementary school art room, or seeing someone from your childhood and slipping into a comfortable back-and-forth.
âJase,â Charlie scooted next to him, breaking away from his conversation with Nico, âHowâs the construction for the new section of the outdoor center going? I heard you hit a snag last week with the design?â
âYea there was a few centimeters off with one of the structures and it caused the whole area to be off balance,â He scrunched his nose, remembering the horror from last week. âIâm just grateful we caught it in time.â
âI canât believe itâs been a year since that center went up,â His friend marvelled, eyes wide with the disbelief of time. He knew the feeling well.
âItâs crazy. I came back from my holiday and then everything was just on fast forward.â He shook his head, a smile tugging at his lips. âIâm happy though, with the progress and how far weâve come.â
âYouâve just burst and grown and brightened,â Thereâs that soft smile, the one that made all of Jasonâs insides turn to mush. The one that told him he was loved in every capacity.
âI know.â He felt the blush creeping up his skin, pale after the long winter months. âI donât owe it to myself though. All of you guys haveââÂ
âNo way mister,â Annabeth chimed in, âYou absolutely owe it to yourself. You got yourself there, we just cheered you on.â
âYea,â Leo nudged his arm, a gentleness shimmering in his brown eyes. âYou were the hero of your own story.â
He muttered thank youâs and tried to embrace the blush but their love and joy and pride still drowned him. Before anyone else could pile on the sincerity they were walking into the lobby and being ushered to the large, elegant ballroom three doors down.
There was a collective gasp from their group, audible even above the low hum of chatter, and the soft jazz drifting through the speakers. The entire room had been made to look like they were standing inside the middle of âStarry Nightâ. Like they were the townsfolk parked outside their houses witnessing the strange and magical sky above them. Swirls of blue in the draping curtains and circles of yellow in the chandeliers and wisps of the cypress trees growing from the walls as if the very room had been built around a tree.
âThis isââ He didnât even have the words to fully express his awe. If he were an art major he would have died from the beauty of it all. As it stood he could barely keep himself up.
âI know,â A voice said quietly from behind him. âItâs almost divine.â
He didnât say anything, didnât even turn around to see who it was. He simply stepped back and let arms envelope him. He didnât need to check, because he knew, he would always know. In the heat of their skin, and the hum of their voice, and the love that radiated between them like scorching summer sun.
âMorĂł mou,â He sighed, tipping his head back to rest against a shoulder. From this angle he could see blazing green eyes and jet-black curls, and impossibly high cheekbones, and a jaw sculpted by Michaelangelo.
âHello my love,â Percy Jackson smiled. âHow are you?â
âHappy.â He muttered, lips brushing against his boyfriendâs cheek.
âGood,â The man nodded, squeezing his waist where his arms still wrapped around. âAre you going to be okay tonight?â
âI will not just survive through it,â His eyes crinkled at the corner as pure joy washed through him, âI will live through it, and I will enjoy every minute of it.â He knew the reason for the question, for the concern. But tonight it was not needed. He was nothing but excited and elated for the hours, and then days, weeks, years to come.
âI love you.â
âI love you.â
A glass tinkled somewhere to their right, grabbing their attention. And then Zoe and Reyna were stepping together and drawing people towards them as if they were gravity, magnets, the center. They looked it certainly: Zoe in a stark white dress, hugging her figure, shimmering like stardust every time she moved; and Reyna in a watery blue, gauzy and flowing in time with her body, where she goes it will ripple behind her.
âThank you,â His lawyer started, giving them a dazzling smile. âFor being here. All of you.â She looked them each in the eye, her own filled with love and⊠were those tears? From his no nonsense, boss lady lawyer? Oh he was so going to give her a hug and then tease her endlessly about it.Â
âWe have a thousand people to thank for all of this,â She gestured to the room, âAnd a thousand more to thank just for being here, but that will come in the form of surprise take-me-homes at the end of the night.â
âHowever,â Zoeâs voice, still as strong and quiet as ever, rang out across the room. âThere are two people we would like to thank right here, right now.â Her smile lit up the world as her eyes landed on them. âIn typical us fashion, itâs a little out of the ordinary but please can both our ex-boyfriendâs come up here.âÂ
The crowd burst into laughter, him and Percy with them, as they detangled themselves from each other and walked hand in hand to the front of the room.
âAs you can see,â Reyna grinned. Jason held in the groan he knew would accompany her next words. âWe did a Partner Swap.â
The laughter only loudened, people whistling, and clapping in time with their amusement.
âI will spare you the sordid details,â Zoeâs own giggling softened to a smile, âBut two years ago, after Jason and I had broken up, I called him in a panic asking for help. And despite being on a much needed holiday where he happened to meet a certain someone,â She winked at them, eyebrows waggling comically, âHe listened to me, then made use of his contacts and connected me with Reyna.â
âAnd after I charmed the suit off of her, and won her lawsuit,â Reyna stepped in, grinning wildly, âShe agreed to pop open a bottle of champagne and celebrate our win.â
âIâm not quite sure about the charming part, angel.â Zoe quirked an eyebrow, âBut yes one champagne bottle and the rest was history.â
âIn conclusion to this whole ordeal,â His lawyer turned to them, âJase, Percy, we have a present for you, to thank you for loving us, and for loving us enough to let us go, and furthermore for bringing us together.â
Zoe handed them an envelope but before they bothered to open it they pulled the women in for a hug, thanking and congratulating them. He would not change what they had for the world. He will be grateful forever. He will love them even longer.
Percy ripped open the envelope and pulled out a single sheet of paper. He leaned over his boyfriendâs shoulder and read with him.
The universe has a funny way of pulling stars together but we know with certainty that the four of us are born from the same constellation. Thank you for everything. We know we can never really repay you but please accept this as a start.Â
Tucked into the last fold of the paper were two plane tickets to Japan. The holiday they had discussed once, a Saturday game night that ended with the four of them huddled around the fire in Zoeâs apartment, chattering softly about this and that. Printed in small font at the bottom of the page was a cherry blossom branch and more text that read,
Get married losers, we want joint holidays so we can get the couples packages.
He bubbled with laughter at that, and looked up at his friends, tears pooling in his own eyes.
âAlright everyone!â Reyna clapped her hands, gathering the attention of the humming crowd. âLetâs get this engagement party started.â
And then music filled the room and people dragged each other to the middle of the space and there were cheers as the song came into focus and truly Jason understood the meaning of life that night.
After they had thanked Reyna and Zoe again, and chatted with their other friends Percy pulled him to the dance floor.
âJase,â His boyfriend cupped the back of his neck, arranging their bodies into a work of art. âWe have wonderful friends.â
âThe very best,â He agreed, swaying their hips in time with the beat. âWe have built an empire with them by our side.â
âWill you be the emperor then?â
âThere is no monarchy in this kingdom,â He smiled, blue eyes glittering and bright. âIt is just us, and our love, and everything beautiful the world has ever had to offer.â He saw oceans reflecting back at him, wonder soaking in his words, happiness pressing against his lips.
His boyfriend pressed their foreheads together, bodies still moving to music far away. âAnd if we look further?â Percy breathed, âPast the empire, to the horizon beyond?â
âIt is all home,â Jason Grace smiled. âWe are home, my love.â

I was told by your wonderful wife, birds-have-teeth that you were in need for some asks/requests. How about Izuku and S/O on their wedding day?
She truly is a wonderful wife đ„șđ
Ahh! I dont usually take requests, but this was just too cute to pass up!
I hope you donât mind that these are headcanons!
Izuku Midoriya X Reader
Wedding Day.
Category: fluff
ââââââââââ
First of all! I think their wedding would be set sometime in spring. The time of year where itâs not too hot and not too cool, just after all the leaves and flowers bloom. I mean think about it, Sakura petals flowing in the wind on your wedding day? What a dream.
It sounds crazy, but I always imagined Izuku as the type of person to want to have their wedding outside.. Kind of like- in a garden? Or a forest? You know that the wedding Bella and Edward had in the forest? Kind of like that! Except surrounded by flowers!
Flowers like.. Magnolia, forget-me-nots, tulips, and of course - sakura! Or, well, Cherry blossoms~ Just! Flowers that really brighten up the secluded space. Youâd need seclusion, after all, especially since you are marrying the number one hero.
Wouldnt it be so cute to be married under a willow tree, a brilliant white arch covered in white roses and vines standing above you both? Ackk vines.. So beautiful. Oh! Maybe thereâs even a little rock pathway down the aisle?
The air is fresh.. Because youâre in the countryside! Maybe even in the mountains. Somewhere where a little babbling brook is not too far behind the trees, its soft bubbling noises relaxing the party-goers.Â
Speaking of! Wouldnt a little plant themed engagement ring be the cutest? Something like this!Â
Wedding ring.. Well you both have to pick that out dont you?
The wedding day is obviously going to be the most important day for both of you! But also, nerve-wracking as hell. Im positive Izuku has probably freaked out five times since he woke up at 6AM. Maybe a mental breakdown. Yknow.Â
Heâs a sensitive guy! And heâs terrified! Nono, he doesnt have cold feet. He wants to marry you! He cannot imagine his life without you in it, but God is he absolutely terrified that you might be the one leaving him at the altar.
Not that he doesnt have faith in you! Itâs just.. His insecurities and anxieties taking over him. Even after all these years of unconditional love, he still cant help but feel you deserve someone way better than him. And he fears one day youâll wake up and realize that as well.
But youâd have to be absolutely crazy to even think about doing that, huh?
So yeah. Wedding day morning is filled with Izukuâs best man - Shoto - trying to calm the sporadic man down, bringing Toshi and his mom in to aid as well. He may have thrown up. Whoâs to say.
You, on the otherhand, are having a great morning. Youâre bouncing with excitement! Ready and oh-so impatiently waiting to marry the man of your dreams in the most scenic area you could find. It truly was a catch! A relatively cheap place - the majority of your funds were spent on food and flowers. You can get pretty good deals on wedding dresses if youâre marrying the number one hero, apparently. So long as they get to display one of your wedding photos.
Hell, itâd help a local business boom, and who wouldnt want that? You got a discount on your bridesmaids dresses as well~
A dream.
But the start time was quickly approaching. Tick-tock!
Soon enough, the both of you are ready to start a new chapter of your lives together.
The scene is set! Your husband-to-be stand beneath arch drenched in morning dew, light breaking through the trees reflecting on each little droplet and showering the little patch where your wedding was being held in brilliant lightsÂ
It honestly looked magical, straight out of a fairy tale. Hell, you were about to marry your prince, after all
God this wedding is like every outdoorsy kidâs dream
The piano starts up once the player gets the queue that everyone is ready.
Your friends walk down the aisle first in pairs, bridesmaids with bridesmen, silky gowns flowing in the gentle spring breeze
Soon enough the flower girl trots happily down the aisle, throwing Sakura petals every which way with a happy little smile on her face, dress as white as snow and a little pink belt.Â
It was truly a miracle no one tripped on the rocks yet.
Once everyone was in their place, a traditional wedding song began to play.Â
Showtime.
Izuku swore he saw an angel the moment those vines swayed to reveal you.
A sunbeam hit you from behind, its golden glow cascading down your body.
Tears formed in his eyes as he watched, paralyzed, as you walked down, heels clicking against the floor
The biggest, goofiest smile cracked onto his face, eyes connecting with yours. All was going to be alright. He had nothing to fear.
Heâd probably openly sob while stating his vows, hands trembling as they hold onto yours.. Itâd probably be something along the lines of.. âEver since the day I met you, iâve become a better man. You helped me grow into who I am today. You guided me towards the path that would lead me to happiness with your loving embrace, with every word of endearment youâd whisper to me, and with love as a whole. I always wondered what itâd feel like to be loved like this, and now that I have it, and that I have you, I donât ever want to let go of it. Because youâre it, princess. Youâre the love of my life, my one and only, my soulmate, and so much more. Every day weâre apart I always think of you. You keep me going. Without you, I wouldnât be me.â
Something cheesy, yknow! Somethin sweeter than candy corn. <3 what a sap.Â
He may have had to wipe his tears a few times⊠cough.
Surprisingly though, his hands are super steady when he slides that ring on.
A shaky yet firm âI do,â green eyes now a shimmering viridescent as he stares at you with the purest form of love swirling in his gaze.
âYou may now kiss the bride.â
His hand reaches up, delicately placing itself on your cheek. He cant help but take this moment in, condemning your smiling, angelic face to memory, the flashes of photos being taken completely ignored as he slowly leans in.Â
His lips are softer than they had ever been in that moment, the kiss itself so sugary sweet - the embodiment of innocence and passion. Love.
Eyes fluttering closed, he cant help but kiss you over and over again, each one making both your smiles grow larger until giggles erupt between the two of you.
Oh boy. He had lipstick smudged all over his lips. He couldnt care less, though. Pulling you close to his body, he smiled cheekily over at the photographer for a photo.
HEâS YOUR HUSBAND NOW! IZUKU IS YOUR HUSBAND! Praise the lords. (Y/N) Midoriya has a nice ring to it, doesnt it?
Inko welcomes you to the Mrs. Midoriya family with a hug.
The rest of the day was filled with you and Izuku being stuck together like glue, surrounded by friends and family.
The wedding photos would be filled with you two standing in a meadow, sun raining brilliantly down on the two newlyweds.
ackk just.. sakura petals flying in the wind~ how pretty. Maybe one even lands in your hair and he gets to pluck it out. <3
Heâs the happiest heâs ever been.
Hell, heâs sure this is what being high felt like.Â
He cant stop smiling! Heâs just so so cute.
Of course, a few goofy photos have to take place! Maybe Uravity uses her quirk to make it look like the number one hero is floating away whilst you ârunâ to try and get him.
There was even one where he and his bridesmen wear parts of their hero costumes to show off a bit. Like Deku wears his hood, Shoto wears his.. Bracelets and backback..? Stuff like that! Truly itâs a weird fuckin photo. But so so dorky and so them.
His favorite photo is definitely the one where he has you sitting on his arm as he flexes. Yep. He turned into a bit of a show off. Could you blame him? Haha.
At night is when the real fun begins. Mainly because of the party! Lanterns are set up everywhere, and due to being so far from the city- the stars are shining in the sky! Much more than youre used to.
Izuku took a dance course, unbeknownst to you (Shoto and Bakugou were forced to join him- talk about chaotic!), so that first dance together is honestly breathtaking. Heâs so gentle with you, leading the way and twirling you around.
May or may not have bawled when you danced with Toshinori.Â
CUTTING THE C AKE. OKAY OKAY.
Itâd probably be forest themed. Green and white blending beautifully together, maybe even a little frosting stream cascading down the side. Hand made models of you and Izuku stood proudly at the top. I guess the flavor would be something you both chose together?
He loves touching your soft hands so holding that knife together is awesome for him.
Oh yea. After the perfect photo is taken, he definitely smears frosting on your cheek - just so he has an excuse to lick it off.
Sticky!
You both leave in a black limo, a âJust Married!â sign placed on the back.
Ahh. honeymoon time.
Itâs going to be a long night,
Mainly because..
Well. Traveling- and.. Yâknow (;
All in all! It starts off as stressful, and ends in the sweetest way possible.

At its core, divine knowing is an exhibition about knowledge, power, and agency. Itâs become a more common understanding that governments, institutions, and algorithms will manipulate the public with what information they frame as fact, fiction, or worthy of attention. Though I am early in researching this topic, I've only come across a minimal amount of mainstream discourse on how the initial threat limiting our scope of knowledge is a refusal to listen to ourselves.
In a world faced with so many threats - humans being violent toward each other, toward animals, toward the earth - it can be a bit unsettling to release the reins and allow ourselves to bear witness for a moment, as we slowly develop a deeper awareness of surrounding phenomena and happenings. Â
divine knowing includes works by formally trained and self-taught artists. A majority of the artists are bisexual, non-binary, or transgender. Regardless of degree-status, gender, or sexuality, these artists have tapped into the autonomous well of self-knowing. Their artworks speak to tactics for opening up to a more perceptive mode of being. They unravel dependencies on external sources for knowledge and what we might recognize, connect with, or achieve once we do.
The installation Femme Digitale by Sierra Bagish originates from a series she began in 2017 by converting photographs of women that were taken and distributed online without the subjectâs consent into paintings. Her practice at the time was concerned with female abjection. Sourcing images found via simple keywords and phrases (e.g., passed out, passed out drunk) she swathes a mass-circulated canon of internet detritus that articulates and produces aggression towards women. With her paintings, she circumvents the imagesâ original framing mechanisms and subverts these proliferated images through a sincere and personal lens.
These paintings divulge the blurred space between idolatry and denigration these online photos occupy, asking whose desires these images fulfill and what their propagation reveals about the culture producing them. Â While Bagish's work contends with political motivations, she also remains keenly observant of form and the varying utilities of different media.
âI use the expressive potential of paint as a vehicle to intervene and challenge ideas about photography as a harbinger of the real and everyday.â
Chariot Birthday Wish is an artist and angel living in Brooklyn. They have seen The Matrix 28 times in 2 years and love horses. The tarot series included in divine knowing is their most intuitive project, something they revisit when unsure of what to work on next. The Major Arcana are composed of digital collages made from sourced images, the Minor Arcana are represented by short, poetic, interpretative texts about the cards. The series is played on shuffle, creating a unique reading for each viewer. This is a work in progress that will eventually finalize as a completed deck of digital collages available for purchase.
Chariot's work emerges from a constant consideration of apocalypse and connection. They reference technology in tandem with nature and a desire for unity. Underneath their work's surface conversation on beauty, care, and relationship exists an agenda to subtly evoke a conspiratorial anti-state mindset. Through a collective imagining of how good things could be and how good we want them to be, we might be able to reckon with how bad things are in contrast.
âI think about texting my friends from the middle of the woods...
Humans are a part of nature and we created these things. There's this Bjork quote where she says that "You can use pro tools and still be pagan." I'm really into the idea of using technology as a tool for divination and holy connection with nature. I imagine a scene; being in moss, it's absolute bliss, and then the connection of texting, sharing an image of moss with a friend, sharing that moment through cellular towers.â
The album "adding up" by thanks for coming is composed of songs Rachel Brown wrote during what they believe to be the most challenging year of their life. Rachel now looks back on this time in appreciation, recognizing they grew in ways they had never imagined. The entire year, they were committed to following their feelings to wherever it may lead.
âIf I hadn't been open to following the almost indiscernible signs I was being sent, then I would have missed out on some of the most important moments in my life.â
Kimberly Consroe holds a Masters in Anthropology along with degrees in Archaeology, Literature, and History. She is currently a Research Analyst at the US Department of Commerce. Her artwork is a passionate escape from a hectic professional life and touches on themes of feminism and nature.
Her works begin as general ideas; their narrative complexity growing with the amount of time she invests in making each one. Her decoupage process starts with cutting hundreds, if not thousands, pieces of paper. The accumulation of clippings sourced from vintage and current-day magazines overlap to tell a story. In Domestication, Kimberly borrows submissive female figures from found images of Ryan Mcguinness's work and places them in a position of power.
âI believe intuition is associated with emotion and experience. It is wisdom and fear, empathy and outrage, distrust and familiarity. It is what we know before we know it. This relates to my artwork in that, from beginning to end, there is never one complete idea concerning the outcome: it is a personal journey. It emerges from an ephemeral narrative that coalesces into a definitive story.â
Anabelle DeClement is a photographer who primarily works with film and is interested in relationships as they exist within a frame. She is drawn to the mystery of the mundane. Intuition exists in her practice as a feeling of urgency and the decision to act on it  ---  a drive often used to describe street photography where the camera catches unexpected moments in an urban environment. Anabelle tends to photograph individuals with whom she has established personal relationships in a slow domestic setting. Her sense of urgency lies in capturing moments of peak intimacy, preserving a memory's informal beauty that otherwise may have been forgotten or overlooked.
Gla5 is a visual artist, poet, bookmaker, production designer, and educator. Play is at the center of their practice. Their process is an experimental one embracing impulse and adventure. Their compositions are informed by relationships among bodies of varying shapes, materials, and densities. Interests that come up in their work include a discernment between symbols and non-symbols, dream states, the portrayal of energy in action, and a fixation on forms such as cups, tables, and spoons.
âI generally think of my work as depicting a layer of life that exists underneath what we see in our everyday lives.â
Gladys Harlow is a sound-based performance artist, comedian, and activist who experiments with found objects, contact mics, textures, range, analog formats, present moments, and emotions. Through raw, avant-garbage performance art, they aim to breakdown societal barriers, abolish oppressive systems, and empower communities. Gladys was born in Queens, NY, raised in Miami, FL and has deep roots in Venezuela. Currently haunting in Philadelphia, PA, Gladys is a founding member of Sound Museum Collective. SMC holds space for reconstructing our relationships to sounds by creating a platform for women, nonbinary, and trans sound artists and engineers.
Street Rat is a visceral exploration of the mysteries of life. Attempting to bring heavy concepts to your reality, it is the eye on the ground that sees and translates all intersecting issues as they merge, explode, dissolve, and implode. Street Rat is Gladys Harlow's way of comprehending, coping, feeling, taking action, disrupting the status quo, and rebuilding our path.
All Power To The People originated as a recorded performance intended to demystify sound by revealing the tools, wires, and movements used to create it. All Power To The People evolved into an installation conceived specifically for this exhibition. The installation includes a theremin and oscillator built by Gladys, a tarot deck they made by hand, and books from the artist's personal collection, amongst other elements. Gladys has created a structure of comfort and exploration. They welcome all visitors of divine knowing to play with the instrument, flip freely through the books, and pull a tarot card to take home.
Phoebe Hart is an experimental animator and filmmaker. A majority of her work is centered around mental illness and the line between dreams and reality. Merry Go Round is a sculptural zoetrope that changes in shape and color as it spins. Its form is inspired by nature and its color by the circus. The videoâs sound was produced by Hayden Waggener. It consists of reverbing chimes which are in rhythm with the stop animationâs movement; both oscillate seamlessly between serene and anxious states.
âI often don't plan the sculptures or objects I am fabricating, there is a vague image in my mind, and my hands take care of the rest. I find that sometimes overthinking is what can get me and other artists stuck. If I just abandon my judgments and ego, I can really let go and create work that feels like it came inherently from me.â
Powerviolets is the solo project of multi-instrumentalist Violet Hetson who is currently based in New York. After experiencing several false starts while bouncing coast to coast, recording and performing with several lineups, Hetson has finally released her debut album. ~No Boys~ namesake is a sarcastic sign she hung on her suburban CT teenage bedroom door. Violet Hetson grew up primarily listening to punk and hardcore. She parses elements of these genres with influences from bands such as X and Suburban Lawns. ~No Boys~ takes a softer, melodic approach to Hetson's punk roots. Powerviolets' music is linear, unconventional, dark, and airy with a sense of humor.
Mary Hunt is a fiber artist specializing in chain stitch embroidery. This traditional form of embroidery uses vintage machinery and thick thread to create fibrous art and embellishments. They use an approach called "thread painting," which requires each stitch to be hand guided by the turn of a knob underneath the table while the speed of movement is controlled by a foot pedal. Chainstitch works can take anywhere from 20 minutes to 200 hours, encouraging a slow and thoughtful process. Mary uses a Cornely A machine, made in Paris more than 100 years ago.
âI think we are sent messages and guidance constantly. Our intuition is simply our ability to clear the path for those messages. The largest obstacles on my artistic path are usually self-imposed negative thoughts. I simply do things to take care of my spiritual well-being, first and foremost, and the rest follows. If I can trust the universe, trust the process, then I am much more likely to listen to the messages sent my way.â
Jes the Jem is a multi-media artist working with acrylic, watercolor, mold clay, and whatever else she can get her hands on. She uses vivid color to bring joy into the lives of those who view her art. Jes the Jem has experienced a great deal of pain in her life. Through that unique displeasure, she has been gifted a nuanced perspective. She aims to energize the present while paying homage to the past events that shape us. In her art, her life, and her interpersonal relationships, Jes the Jem appreciates the gift of all of life's experiences.
âThe pursuit of happiness and understanding is instinct.â
Pamela Kivi pieces together visual scraps she has saved over the years, choosing to fuse them at whatever present moment she sees fit. Her work reflects on creative mania, fleeting emotions, and memories. Pamela's collages are a compilation of unexpected elements that include: old notebooks, cut-outs, text messages or Facebook message conversations, nostalgic cellphone photos, and visual materials she has chosen to hold onto. She prints out, cuts up, scans, edits, repeats. Pamela's artistic practice is deeply personal. It is a submittal to the process of dusting things off until a reflection can be seen, all enacted without an attachment to the end result.
âI rely on intuition and whatever state of mind I am in to whisk me away. In life, I often confuse intuition with anxiety- when it comes to creative work, I can decipher the two.â
Through sobriety, Kendall Kolenik's focus has shifted toward self-discovery and shedding old adaptive patterns, a process that led her to a passion for helping others heal themselves too. In autumn, she will begin her Masters in Social Work at Columbia University.
âI love how when I'm painting my self-doubt becomes so apparent. Painting shows me exactly where my doubt lies, which guides me towards overriding it. When I paint something and lean into doubt, I don't like what comes out. When I take note of the resistance and go with my gut more freely, I love it. This reminds me of my yoga practice. What you practice on the mat is a metaphor for how you show up in life. By breathing through the uncomfortable poses on the mat, you learn to breathe through challenging life moments.
I think we all grow up learning to numb and edit ourselves. We are taught not to trust our feelings; we are told to look outside ourselves for answers when we already have a perfectly good compass within. Painting is an archway back to that for me - rediscovering self-reliance and faith in my first instinct. When I'm creating these rainbow squares, sometimes I move so fast it's like something else is carrying me. I sort of leave myself and enter a trance. Like how you don't have to tell the heart to beat or the lungs to breathe - thinking goes away and I can get so close to my knowing that I become it. I love how art allows me to access my love for ambiguity, interpretation, and an interpretation that feels closer to Truth. I find no greater purpose than guiding people back to safety and reconnecting them with themselves. The most important thing to ever happen in my life was when I stopped trying to deny my reality - listening to your intuition can be like a freefall - no one but you can ever know or tell you - it is a deep trust without any outside proof.â
Lucille Loffredo is a music school dropout, Jewish trans lesbian, and veterinary assistant doing her best to make sure each day is better than the last. Lucille tries to find the music rather than make it. She lets it tell her what it wants to do and what it wants to be. The Wandering EP was in part written as a way to come out to herself. She asks all listeners to please be gentle.
âChange will come, and it will be good. You are who you think you are, no matter how far it seems.â
Whitney Lorenze generally works without reference, making thick, graphic pictures with precise forms conceived almost entirely from her imagination. Images like a slowly rolling car crackling out of a driveway, afternoon sun rays shining through a cloud of humidity, or headlights throwing a lined shadow across a black bedroom inspire her.
âAs it concerns my own practice and the creation of artworks generally, I would define intuition as the ability to succumb to some primal creative impulse. Of course, this implies also the ability to resist the temptations of producing a calculated or contrived output.â
Ellie Mesa began teaching herself to paint at the age of 15, exploring landscapes and portraiture. Her work has evolved into a style of painting influenced by surrealism where teddy bears will morph into demons and vice versa. Her work speaks to cuteness, the grotesque, and mystical beings. The painting "Kali" is an homage to the Hindu goddess of creation, Â destruction, life and death. This was Ellie's first painting after becoming sober and is an expression of the aforementioned forces in her own life. Through meditations on Kali, Elli has been able to find beauty in the cycle of love and loss.
âTo me, intuition means doing the thing that feels right whether or not it's what you want it to be. When I'm painting or making a sculpture, I give myself the freedom to follow what feels right, even if that means starting over or changing it completely. I allow the piece to present itself to me instead of forcing something that doesn't want to be.â
Mari Ogihara is a sculptor exploring duality, resilience, beauty, and serenity as experienced through the female gaze. Her work is informed by the duality of womanhood and the contradictions of femininity. In particular, the multitude of roles we inhabit as friend, lover, sister, and mother and their complex associations to the feminine perspective.
âIntuition is an innate, immediate reaction to an experience. While making art, I try to balance intuition, logic, and craftsmanship.â
All Of Me Is War by Ames Valaitis addresses the subconscious rifts society initiates between women, estranging them from each other and themselves.
âIt is an unspoken, quick, and quiet battle within me as the feeling of intuition purely, and when I am making a drawing. I am immediately drawn to poses and subject matter that reflect the emotion inside myself, whether it is loud or under the surface. If a line or figure doesn't move me, after working on it for a few minutes, I get rid of it. If something looks right to me immediately, I keep it; nurture it. I try to let go of my vision, let my instinct take hold. I mirror this in my life as I get older, choosing who and what to put my energy into. The feeling is rarely wrong; I'd say we all know inherently when it is time to continue or tap out.â
Chardel Williams is a self-taught artist currently living in Bridgeport. Her biggest inspiration is her birthplace of Jamaica. Chardel views painting as a method for blocking out chaos. Her attraction to the medium springs from its coalescence of freedom, meditative qualities, and the connection it engenders. rears.
âIntuition for me is going where my art flows. I implement it in my practice by simply creating space and time to listen. There are times when what I'm painting is done in everyone else's eyes, but I just keep picking at it. Sometimes I would stop painting a piece and go months without touching it. Then, out of nowhere, be obsessed with finishing. I used to get frustrated with that process, but now I go with it. I stopped calling it a block and just flow with it. I listen because my work talks.â

2020 in review
tagged by @7rc --thank you, I love doing these kinds of things. and since i always write too much for them, the list is under the cut.
Top 5 movies I saw this year:
Emma. (last film I saw in a theater!)
Roman Holiday (hOW did it take me this long to watch this. how is roman holiday not more embedded as a fanfic au plot trope? a pure delight.)Â
The Host (went through all the Bong Joon Ho movies I could find after seeing Parasite and this one was my favorite. B-movie but make it art!)
Naussica of the Valley of the Wind / The Castle of Cagliostro / Porco Rosso (As of this year, Iâve watched every Miyazaki movie! all three of the ones I caught up with are great, and I canât bring myself to choose between them.)
The Hateful Eight (we hooked our laptop up to our stereo to watch this after Liminal Election Week and it was so cathartic to live in a world with different, more visceral problems and to see people in lockdown for a different reason)
Top 5 TV shows I watched this year:
Halt and Catch Fire (I didnât post much about this show at all when I watched it in June because it was so good that I watched all four seasons in one weekend. Stick with it thru the first season where itâs still just âdiet 80s Mad Men and Lee Pace and MacKenzie Davis are thereâ and youâll get a show thatâs also a stunning mediation on how people youâve grown apart from can still be part of you even after time changes both of you several times over and what it means to be able to forgive and be forgiven. youâll feel like you lived a lifetime after finishing this.)
The Simpsons (first nine seasons! this is what I watched over the summer when packing up the apartment Iâd lived in for four years)
What We Do in the Shadows (the first season was a great time, but somewhere around the Jackie Daytona episode was when I realized I was watching a masterclass sitcom)
Derry Girls (this was the perfect stress-barricading watch for the first week of quarantine! absolutely sublime.)
Simone Giertzâs youtube channel (loved the consistent experience of being able to watch a cute, talented woman follow the inscrutable exhortations of her soul, especially when those exhortations were things like âmake a coffee table out of matches and then light those matches,â âbuild a robot deer I can hunt with a compound bowâ and âbuild a scissor lamp.â her whole spirit of âyeah, fuck it, Iâm just gonna manifest this thing because I want toâ is infectious and brought a lot of joy back into covid summer)
Top 5 Songs:
Choose literally any Fiona Apple - Fetch the Bolt Cutters track and insert it here
Fleetwood Mac -Â âAngelâ
Throwing Muses - âNot Too Soonâ
Adrienne Lenker - âAnythingâÂ
Haim - âDonât WannaâÂ
Top 5 Books I Read This Year:
The first four Earthsea books by Ursula Le Guin, with special mentions to The Tombs of Atuan and Tehanu which both gave me the delightful âI am spending a week just living in this book and lapping it down as if itâs waterâ experience. #tenarhive.Â
The Secret History by Donna Tartt. I was going to describe this novel where pretentious students form a Greek cult and then murder the weak link of the squad as âfunâ which seems a little incongruous but like...itâs a taut, perfectly paced thriller and I got to understand the Greek allusions in it and there was some delicious dramatic irony in how the bookâs narrated. so yeah, i did have fun with it. itâs fun.
The Fire Next Time by James Baldwin. Baldwin can write epigrammatically and thatâs how I first encountered him, as a quotation. But the reason he gets quoted is because he makes sure to never simplify his ideas or reduce the world to something less complex than it really is, even when heâs also going for pith and wit. And of course, like all writers, he improves all the more with context. As a Christian, I found his critique of how the church has let itself be used as a tool of white supremacy particularly lucid and helpful.
Daisy Jones and the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid. âFictional oral historyâ is such a fun and breezy conceit for a novel and I tore through this one in a day during the first week of quarantine. a lovely little pastiche of some very familiar tropes if you happen to love the archetypes and mythology of popular music and/or are a boomer. this is what is responsible for the Fleetwood Mac.
Pyrrhus and Cineas by Simone de Beauvoir. I leaned on this little essay A LOT for the honors thesis I spent this year writing and reread it three times. Itâs such a clever and intriguing discussion of why we bother doing anything at all or why we should choose one goal over another when it all just ends in us dying anyway, which are themes that really hit this year. The last paragraph of the first part always gives me chills.Â
Top 5 positive things that happened to me in 2020:
this was back in the part of 2020 that isnât part of 2020, but I had one really fantastic 48 hours back in February where I helped host the speakers my job invited to a philosophy of religion conference, went to two really nice dinners, talked about so many interesting things, and then went on a impromptu outing with an art history major to see a pop art exhibit.
I participated in several different classes and reading groups, mostly organized by two of our professors, that gave me something to do over the year other than doomscroll and vegetate. I read Kafka, Nietzsche, Toni Morrison, Camus, Philip K. Dick, and Foucault for the first time over the course of these and it was a precious gift to have a built-in venue for social interaction when I was stuck in an apartment by myself.
I moved to an apartment in another city with one of my best friends to ride out quarantine together and that decision has been such a boon for my mental health in the back half of this year. finding the place was a nightmare, but itâs in a nice neighborhood that has a beautiful park and a sculpture garden in walking distance and it was wonderful to put up art and make the place our own. it was a refreshing and much needed change in a year when change was hard to come by.
I used online school to go home for thanksgiving for the first time since I moved away and then just stayed for the rest of the holidays. I usually only get three weeks down here on winter break, so it was nice to have a month and a half instead.Â
I graduated from college! and one silver lining of having no idea what 2021 is going to look like is that Iâm forced to take at least a semester break to heal from the burn out instead of automatically starting the application cycle for grad school (although the âoh I have no idea what Iâm going to do about grad schoolâ is dawning on me and figuring that out will be a huge part of whatever happens next year).
i feel weird tagging people to think back about this last year now that weâre safely out of it? like donât go back into 2020, thatâs where the 2020 is! but, if you want to, iâm tagging @justthatspiffy @aahsoka @theraisincouncil @cosm-i @letsoulswander and you, if you also wanna revisit this kind of stuff.

[multi-chap masterlist] [next chapter]
Your fingers wrapped around the car key in the ignition, slowly turning it and killing the engine. Leaning forwards, you took a closer look at the outside of the tattoo shop you arrived at. It looked clean and modern, white letters in a sharp font spelled out the shop name on the glass.Â
'HERO|INK'
Quirking a brow you couldn't tell if the owners were being clever and using a play on words for 'heroic' or if 'hero ink' was what they were going for. Either way, you shrugged your shoulders and figured it'd be a good topic for small talk during your tattoo session.Â
Before exiting your vehicle, your eyes scanned the road you were parked on to make sure no cars were coming. Seeing that it was safe, you wrapped your scarf tightly around your neck, nuzzled into your coat and opened the door, taking off into the freezing cold air. The chilly wind and fleeting snow made your eyes screw shut and bones rattle as you ran to the door of the shop.
Once inside you leaned back against the door, underneath itâs ringing bell that signaled your arrival and took a breath from the brief jog. The temperature inside the shop was extremely warm and cozy, making you hum while shaking off the snow flakes from your hair.Â
Looking around you were in awe at how well designed and laid out the shop was. You've been in plenty of tattoo shops with your past friends and lover, none of them were even close to how nice this place was. It was pristine, sharp and sleek. Art work was framed and hung from the walls, along with traditional Japanese oni masks. The floors were wood and shiny, the front counter was matte black. The tattoo stations were no where in sight, leading you to believe that they were in the back away from the public.
While looking around and unwrapping your scarf, quick footsteps could be heard from a walkway behind the counter. You looked and smiled when a black-haired male popped up, he gave you a triangular smile in return. He wore a black beanie and had his ears gauged. Black ink in a geometric design with a lotus covered his throat and went further down under the collar of his raglan shirt. Both of his arms were sleeved out, they seemed to have the same theme of geometric patterns along with bold sharp flowers. Looking further you noticed just how massive his elbows were, they were really awkward looking and unconsciously you made a not so cute face.Â
A warm chuckle made your eyes tear away from the mans elbows and you blushed with embarrassment.
"I â I'm so sorry for staring."
"Nah, it's normal I have weird elbows. It's just because of my quirk," he smiled.
Before you could ask what his quirk was, he bent one of his elbows and aimed it at you. Suddenly a ribbon of white shot out from it and wrapped around your waist. You gasped when the material retracted and pulled you closer to the front counter that he stood behind. You couldn't help but laugh from the demonstration and clapped when he released you and bowed.
"It's tape, comes in handy for a few things I guess. I'm Sero by the way."
You nodded and took the hand he held out for you to shake, "It looks practical, I'm (Y/N)."
Sero raised his eyebrows and went to the computer monitor at the end of the counter. He smiled and snapped his fingers before looking at you.
"You're here for an appointment,"Â he replied and looked at the clock on the wall only to chuckle, "You're five minutes early, we usually never have customers arrive early."
"Yeah, I've never been late for anything in my life honestly, it's just a pet peeve of mine."
Sero breathed out a warm laugh and walked out from behind the counter, his arm motioning you over to a high table that sat against a wall. He pulled out the stool for you and couldn't help but offer his hand when he noticed that the seat was a little too high off the ground.
"Sorry, we usually have massive guys come in here. Rarely do we ever have many females."
You smiled and mentioned it wasn't a problem and thanked him for his help.Â
Sero took a seat next to you on the opposite stool after he grabbed a sketch pad and pencil from the counter. The two of you went over the idea you had in mind for your tattoo. As you explained the image, Sero's hand worked at sketching up a general idea of it. What you described was very minimalistic.Â
A plain ocean wave, curling in on itself, no shading involved just line work. You also added lyrics that curved around the wave perfectly. Once Sero finished he looked it over and smirked.
"It's simple and really easy, but I can tell you have a reason for this just from the lyrics. It's always nice to have someone come in wanting a piece that holds sentimental value behind it. It makes what we do that much more important."
You smiled and nodded but didn't care to elaborate any further on your meaning.Â
Sero nodded himself, quickly figuring out that you didn't want the topic to go any further, to which he was perfectly fine with. He briefly excused himself for a moment and disappeared back behind the counter. You waited silently and watched the busy street outside until Sero came back in a short amount of time and rubbed his hands together as he approached you.
"Alright, where are you wanting to put this?"
You blushed slightly and lifted your arm, placing your hand on the patch of skin on your ribs that started behind the cup of your bra.Â
"Here."
Sero raised a brow and nodded, "Okay, that's perfectly fine. You are prepared to remove your shirt and bra for it right? Also, your placement choice may be just a tad bit more painful than other spots."
Nodding, you lowered your arm. "I'm fine with all of that. Pain is of no issue, I have a healing quirk."
Sero chuckled and crossed his hands behind his head, "Well shit then, this should be a piece of cake for you! Your artist is finishing up on one of our guys right now, so we'll go ahead and get your paperwork done."
Quickly, he went to the computer behind the desk and printed up a few forms and jogged back over to you and placed them on the table with a pen. Clearing his throat he rubbed the side of his neck.
"You are older than 18 right? It's just something we have to ask."
You giggled, which seemed to reassure Sero, "Yeah, I'm 22 actually. I know, I don't really look it."
Sero agreed and went over the paperwork with you, it was just simple stuff such as you agreeing and consenting to the tattoo, accepting that a tattoo is indeed like an open wound and is susceptible to infections if not taken care of. The paper also asked that you inform them of any allergies to latex, ink, and other things that would come into contact with your skin. After filling out your paperwork, Sero gathered it and placed it in a file behind the counter and motioned you over behind it and to follow him down a hall.Â
There were three doors all on the same side, two were closed and one was open, the sounds of buzzing and low-volume music could be heard the closer you got.
"Hey Kiri, Denks, this is (Y/N)," Sero said as you both hung around the door frame.
You peeked in to see a yellow-haired male, he was shirtless and random tattoos littered his skin as he laid out on a tattoo chair with an arm wrapped around the back of it. One of his nipples were pierced and a ring with a lightning bolt charm hung from it. His golden eyes flickered up to you and they sparkled when he smiled wide and shifted in his chair.
"Goddammit Denki, stay still, I do have a needle to your skin!"
A raspy voice caught your attention and made you look to the male who was hunched over with his back to you, tattooing Denki.Â
He wore a black muscle shirt; the sides ripped open all the way down to his waist and showcasing the hard-muscled body beneath the fabric. Both of his arms were covered in traditional Japanese tattoos and a thick black headband had his bright red spiky locks held back, not that they looked like they were going anywhere from how hard and sharp they were.
"Sorry, you know how excited I get when there's a pretty girl around," Denki teased and winked at you.
You couldn't help but blush and smile, only boosting the males ego even more.
Sero moved to stand by Denki and shook his head at the tattoo being placed on his rib cage. "Denki, I really don't understand you sometimes man."
You walked over to look for yourself and covered your mouth trying to hide a chuckle. For some reason this man was getting a tattoo of a hand making an upside down 'ok' symbol.Â
The red-head glanced at you from the side, deep red eyes looking at you for the first time and quirked a dark brow. You looked back with a smile only to have one of his eyes narrow before he went back to tattooing. You frowned and nervously rubbed your neck.
"Maybe he's just in the zone," you thought.
"So, to what do we owe the pleasure of having such an angelic face enter our shop," Denki asked, batting his exceptionally long lashes at you.
"You mean our shop," Sero corrected and flicked the golden boys forehead as he motioned from himself and Kiri.
He whined and stuck out a pierced tongue making you lightly chuckle and cross your arms while watching the red-head tattoo.
"Well obviously I'm getting a tattoo."
Sero snorted at your straight-forward answer and patted Denki's shoulder.
"Yeah, a tattoo that she's paying for, so hurry it up Red."
Kiri waved off his friend and mumbled incoherently as Sero walked out after giving your shoulder a squeeze and flashing you a reassuring smile. You smiled back and thanked him while removing your coat and sat down in one of the free chairs as you waited for your artist to finish.Â
You jumped when you caught Denki staring at you all starry eyed. Your brows knitted, a nervous chuckle rolling off your lips.
"You got a man cuteness?"
Kiri's eyes flashed from his task and to you for a brief second before looking back down and smirking. You suppressed the shiver that threatened to run down your spine from the look his piercing red eyes gave. Shaking it off you looked at Denki and shook your head.
"Uh â no. I just recently moved here actually, so I don't know anyone."
Denki excitedly shifted in his seat, digging something out of his pants and making the red-head growl at him. Suddenly, a phone was tossed your way, fortunately you had quick reflexes and caught the device, giving the yellow-haired man a look.
"You can know me, put your number in there, we should totally go out sometime, I'll make sure you have fun!"
You looked at the phone in your hands and hesitated from being put on the spot so quickly. "Uhh, I don't â"
"Just do it so he'll shut up and I can finish this," Kiri demanded with an annoyed voice.
Denki glared at his friend and pushed his shoulder with his palm, "Hey man what's up your ass!"
"Nothing, I just hate wasting time. I have other things I need to do after all of this shit."
You rolled your eyes, already getting sick of the sour attitude this guy was having so far. Without wasting anymore time you unlocked Denki's phone and went straight to entering your contact information.Â
He seemed pretty harmless and actually funny, so what would it hurt to make a new friend. Getting up from your seat, you walked over and handed the phone back to Denki with a smile.Â
Once turned around and walking back to your seat, both of the men stole quick glances before you turned back around to sit. Kiri cleared his throat when your (e/c) eyes looked at him and your tongue briefly wet your lips. You bit on the end of it as you quirked a brow at him. He raised his own eyebrow and subtly shook his head, going back to the tattoo.Â
Denki went to typing away on his phone, seconds later your own phone went off and you fished it out from your bag on the floor.
You opened it to a text from an unknown number that read, 'Just making sure you didn't give me a bogus number' .
Looking up at Denki, who was once again smiling at you made you quietly giggle. After saving his information you spent the next ten minutes browsing random apps to make the time go by. When the buzzing of the tattoo machine finally stopped you looked up to see Kiri place it on the tray next to him and sigh.
He wiped the ink clean with some tattoo soap and a napkin then nudged Denki's leg as if to say he was finished. Denki smiled and hopped off the chair and walked over to the mirror to check out his comical piece of ink. He turned to you and raised a brow. You were able to fully take in his other tattoos which were all literally random and had no cohesive theme to them. It was a mess really.
"What do you think cutie?"
You smiled and chuckled, brushing back a lock of hair. Unaware of the red eyes watching the small movement with interest.Â
"I have a feeling it really suits you."
Kiri yawned in the background and leaned his head to the side, cracking the bones in it and sighing. He stood from his stool and stretched his arms above his head, your eyes widened as you realized just how massive this guy was. There wasn't a single ounce of fat on him, everything was hard tattooed muscle. You swallowed harshly, admitting to yourself that he was definitely attractive, almost too attractive!
"So, virgin skin huh?"
Your eyes blinked and looked over to see Denki crouched down next to you, it made you jump a little and he chuckled.Â
"Excuse me," you asked with a smirk.
"I don't see any sort of marks on you, no other tattoos, not even any scars. Even people who live somewhat normal lives have some sort of scars, what are you like some princess that was sheltered from the world?"
Kiri shook his head and tossed an empty ink cup at Denki, "Why can't you mind your own business man."
You shook your head at both men and assured them it was okay.Â
"Uh â first off, no I'm not a princess. I've had my fair share of scrapes and scratches, but they don't last long because I have a healing quirk. It's not much but â"
"Shit really? So you could heal my tattoo like right now and I wouldn't have to wait two weeks to go swimming?"
You laughed and placed a hand on Denki's cheek, Kiri looked at you with a raised brow and narrowed his eyes, something foreign and totally fucking stupid bubbling up inside of him at the scene before him. Denki however was over the moon and grabbed your hand.
"You do know it's like freezing balls outside right, you can't go swimming!"
"Of course I can cutie, there are such a thing as indoor pools, hot springs!"
"Ah," you remembered and shook your head, "you have a point I guess. But yeah, I could heal you, its small enough."
Denki stood up eagerly and pulled up his shirt, giving you the side of him with the fresh tattoo. He kindly and desperately pleaded to see your quirk in action. It made you laugh, he was too cute for his own good.
With a smile, you placed a hand on his skin. Denki flinched slightly from the feel of your cold fingertips, you apologized softly, earning a bright smile from him.
Closing your eyes you took a deep breath and cleared your mind, a small buzzing at the back of your skull thrumming as your quirk activated. A dim glow illuminated under your hand quickly before disappearing.Â
Kiri watched on closely as he set up fresh tools, his machine and ink for your tattoo. When you pulled your hand away Denki looked down and felt at the patch of skin. It was no longer warm and raised, it felt as if the tattoo had been healed for months.
"Damn sweetheart, you know you'd come in handy around here," Denki complimented with a devious look in his friends direction.
Kiri glared at the golden boy as if he had said something out of line. Denki cleared his throat and lowered his shirt back down but you smiled at him and he instantly perked back up.
"Well, I should be heading off and letting you get to it Red, thanks again. I'll be back later tonight," Denki walked over and gave his friend a half-hug and grabbed his coat from a hook on the wall.Â
He sauntered over to you, taking your hand in his and bringing it to his lips to place a kiss to it. You couldn't help but laugh at how unashamed he was, you were really starting to like this guy.
"It was such a pleasure to meet you gorgeous, this definitely won't be our last time seeing each other. I'll hit you up later, maybe we can go for a bite to eat sometime."
You nodded and waved as Denki made his way out of the room.Â
The moment he was gone the atmosphere suddenly lost all of it's lightheartedness and you were now alone with the not so charming red-head.
You looked to see him standing at the small desk that sat in a corner of the room, the sound of a printer could be heard and his muscular fingers took the sheet that exited from the machine. His free hand scratched at the back of his neck, body turning around and walking back to the tattoo chair to place the sheet on the leather of it.Â
He smirked and looked at you finally where you stood there almost glaring at each other.
"Alright little one, strip."

Summary: Halloween, the only time of the year when the spirits can leave Camp Redwood. Bobby takes the squad with him to a college party, where youâre one of the hostesses.Â
Halloween. The only time of the year when the trapped spirits of Camp Redwood could step over the border and wander off into the world.
Granted, they couldnât really get much further than Los Angeles, the very place they had been trying to escape by signing up as camp counselors in the first place, as they had to be back by midnight. But after being stuck in that wretched place, constantly surrounded by death for over thirty long years, anything was better than there.
The first times they discovered this loophole, they had, of course, tried to stay outside camp after midnight, but every time, they would pass out and wake up inside the border again. They were really stuck, and Halloween was the only time the curse was lifted.
Most years, Benjamin, his mother and brother would go off with Bobby as the camp wasnât safe for him and he couldnât visit them there, while the other spirits went off on their own.
But this year was different. This year, the Richters were on Ramirez guard duty, and Bobbyâs college just so happened to be throwing a Halloween party with an 80s theme. It was an opportunity too good to pass up.
Bobby brought his car up to the camp early that morning, waited right by the border and called out for the spirits, letting them know of the festivities they were going to be participating in that evening and no one made any protests to it.
On the contrary, Montana and Xavier practically fought their way to the front seat, Xavier coming out on top at the end of it and forcing Montana to take her place in Trevorâs lap in the backseat. Not that she was complaining.
You went to the same college as Bobby and had made yourself acquainted with him as you shared more than a few classes. You would say you were good friends, but you didnât really hang out other than in an academic purpose.
You were a sorority girl and a popular one at that, and he had always been kind of an outcast. Probably not very surprising, as his dad was the infamous Mr. Jingles.
He had told you the entire truth about what really happened at Camp Redwood, about Margaret Booth being the real villain and how she had framed his father to get away with fulfilling her twisted needs.
But he hadnât told you about the way they were ghosts at camp and that he regularly went up to see them.
Even though you were pretty much the only one who believed the story about his dad and Margaret Booth, it seemed a bit too farfetched that you would also believe in ghost stories, and even though you didnât hang out on a regular basis, he wasnât ready to lose the only living friend he had.
It was your sorority that was hosting the costume party, and you were⊠not too thrilled about it. You may have been a sorority girl, but you were in it all for the friendships and sisterhood, and less so for the parties and boys.
Majority of the men of the 21st century were pigs, especially the frat-boys. To them, everything was theirs, objects and women alike. Although really, to them, there was no distinction between the two.
And their rich dads feeding their massive egos and toxic masculinity with ideas and promises that they were going to be at the top of the world one day didnât make things better, either.
The sexual revolution had been even more intense during the 20th century, but at least then theyâd had some manners about it. When finding out the theme of the annual party, you had found yourself wishing you were actually in the 80s.
But unfortunately, time travel had yet to be discovered, so all you could do was put on a smile, get dressed in some skimpy outfit consisting of a bright purple bralette, a black mesh top and a skintight leather skirt, and go around the party greeting everyone like the good host that you were.
Only half an hour into the party, you had been hit on by more guys than you could count, of which none had made a courteous approach.
It was always the same. They would slide up next to you with a smug, self-righteous smirk, touch your hair or your face while ogling your chest or legs, and ask in a voice they probably intended to be seductive but came out as anything but, âWanna get out of here?â. Â
Every time, you would smile and politely turn them down with the excuse that your sisters were counting on you to looking over the order at the party, and every time you got the same response.
âWhatever, youâre not that hot, anyway.â
At this point, you were so used to it you didnât even bat an eye, which was actually really sad, because it shouldnât have to be that way.
Eventually, you just retreated to the back of the living-room, leaning against a wall with an untouched drink in your hand as your friends and enemies danced along to âYou Spin Me Roundâ by Dead Or Alive in all their drunken glory, all dressed in neon, mesh and headbands and behaving as if they wouldnât have to go back to studying early the next morning.
By the time Bobby walked into the house with everyone else in tow, the party was raging on, the entire house feeling as if it was shaking with life.
After having had to adjust themselves to the new century the previous years they had gone out during Halloween, they were all astonished at the familiarity of it all.
The costumes looked just like their actual clothes, and the music blasting from the speakers was the very same music that had been the latest hits during the time they were still alive.
âOh, Bobby, this is tubular!â Montana gasped excitedly as she looked around the room, holding on to Trevorâs arm tightly.
Chet nodded, looking around with equally as much fascination. âToooh-tally tubular!â He agreed.
Bobby chuckled, but before anyone could say anything else, Xavier had grabbed a hold of the human boyâs sleeve and tugged on it, looking rather distraught as he stared at something at the other side of the room.
âBobby. Whoâs that?â He asked, eyes not once blinking.
Bobby and the otherâs followed his line of sight and instantly caught sight of you where you stood, looking over the room in a bored manner with your arms crossed over your chest.
Your hair was styled in wild curls, your hips hugged beautifully by a black leather skirt and your stomach and arms on display underneath the black mesh, your chest barely covered by the lilac bralette.
You were unlike anything Xavier had ever seen, and he had seen a lot of lightly-dressed girls during his time as an aerobics instructor. He couldnât take his eyes off of you, his head spinning at sight of your smile.
âSheâs hot.â Montana was quick to comment, to which Bobby chuckled once again.
âYeah, she is.â He agreed. âAnd sheâs totally out of our league. Out of anyoneâs league, really.â
Xavier finally tore his eyes away from you, turning to look at the human beside him. âYou know her?â
He shrugged. âWeâre in the same classes.â He informed. âSheâs the only one Iâve told about my dad.â
âShe knows about us?â Ray spoke up for the first time.
âNoâŠâ Bobby hesitated, watching as yet another guy approached you, having to hold in the snort when seeing the annoyed and disgusted look overcoming your face. âI kind of left out the whole⊠ghost part.â
âIntroduce me.â
Bobby averted his gaze to the blonde boy beside him, eyebrows raising in surprise at the demanding tone in his voice. âWhat?â He inquired, to which Xavier yet again let his eyes leave your form to look at him.
âIntroduce me. To her.â He demanded, eyes flickering over to you for a brief moment before looking back to Bobby, adding in a more hesitant voice. âPlease.â
Bobby hesitated, looking between the two of you. âI donât think thatâs a very good idea, Xavier.â He admitted but having felt their stares burning into the side of your face, you had already spotted them, and wasted no time in heading over in their direction, eager to get away from the conversation you were currently forced into.
âOh, thank God, youâre here.â Was the first thing you said to Bobby as you got close enough for him to hear you over the music, dumping the drink in your hand at a table on your way. âIâm at the brink of going crazy.â
You came to a stop before him, your arms crossing over your chest, which only made it even harder for Xavier to tear his eyes away from your⊠assets.
âI take it youâre not having a very good time, then.â Bobby smirked, amused.
You met his eyes with a playful glare, before looking around sourly. âI wouldâve rather stayed at my dorm, watching a movie or something, but oh well.â You snorted, turning back to look at him. âWhat to do, right?â You asked, attempting a small smile.
He returned it with one of his own, and you suddenly became very aware of the stares from the people he was with, direction your eyes to them. Your eyebrow raised slightly at the sight of them. All of them looked like they were pulled straight out of the 80s.
You hummed, giving them all a once-over before turning back to Bobby. âSo, are you going to introduce me to your friends?â You asked, and Bobby quickly snapped into it.
âOh, right.â He realized. âGuys, this is (Y/N). (Y/N), this is-â
âIâm Montana.â The only girl in the company stepped forward, holding her hand out to shake with a big smile on her lips. âI just have to say, your bod is like, rad. Do you take aerobics?â
âI-â You were at loss for words at the sudden compliment, your eyes widening slightly. But nonetheless, you took her hand in yours, shaking it.
âI do actually.â You answered, chuckling. âI havenât met anyone whoâs into aerobics around here before. Itâs not really a thing anymore. Where did you say you were from?â
She smiled proudly. âLos Angeles, born and raised.â
You hummed, narrowing your eyes slightly at her, trying to process her face in your head, but came out with a blank. âWeird.â You said. âI havenât seen you around before, and thereâs only one aerobics studio left here.â
She only shrugged and smiled, and Bobby took the wheel from then on, beginning to introduce everyone else.
âThis is Ray, Chet, Trevor, aaand⊠Xavier.â He introduced them. All of them gave you a smile and a small âhelloâ accompanied by a wave each, and you kindly returned it all, until your eyes finally met with the last person to be introduced.
You had never been one to believe in the clichĂ©s always used in chick flicks about love at first sight, but as you met his eyes, you couldâve sworn you felt the rest of the room just⊠melt away.
He was absolutely gorgeous, looking as if he was pulled straight out of a magazine.
A feeling resembling a high came over you and your body moved on its own as you held his gaze, your hand coming out in front of you. âIâm (Y/N). Itâs nice to meet you.â You said, smiling, and he wasted no time in taking your hand in his, giving it a squeeze.
âIâm Xavier.â He introduced himself, even though Bobby had just introduced him a second ago.
You smiled and nodded, holding his gaze for a moment longer before turning to look at Bobby again. âWell, you know the drill by now.â You told him. âDrinks are in the kitchen where they always are, and if thereâs anything else you need, I wonât be far away.â
Bobby smiled, leaning in to hug you quickly, an act of friendly affection that you accepted with open arms.
âThanks, (Y/N).â He told you, letting you go and turning to his friends. âLetâs go get some drinks.â
They didnât need to be told twice, all of them heading in the direction of the kitchen without a second thought, weaving their way through the people crowding the room. But Xavier didnât move from his spot, his eyes staring down at you.
For some reason, however, you didnât mind, simply looking up to meet his eyes with a small smile.
Your head tilted to the side slightly as you inspected his face, eyes narrowing as your smile widened. âDonât I know you from somewhere?â You asked carefully, finding him awfully familiar.
A nervous smile overcame his features, but you thought nothing of it as he shook his head. âNo, I donât think so.â He answered.
You hummed, analyzing his face for another moment before shaking yourself free of your thoughts, chuckling. âSorry, you just look so familiar.â You confessed.
The sound of your laugh instantly caused his smile to widen, and his confidence quickly rose when you let the subject go. âI guess I just have one of those faces.â He shrugged.
âYeah, I guess.â You chuckled again, smiling. You were quiet for a few seconds, your eyes leaving his to gaze around the room.
In one of the corners, you could spot your sorority sisters playing beer pong with some guys from one of the fraternities, and by the looks of it as Savannah had her tits out, they were playing the hit-or-strip version.
The sight brought a slight sigh from your lips, and you shook your head. You could only comfort yourself with the knowledge that your other sisters would look after her and keep her out of harmâs way. God knows she wouldnât be able to do so herself in the state she was in; she had never been able to hold her alcohol very well.
âLookâŠâ You began, finally tearing your eyes away from the scene and turning back to the blonde boy in front of you. âI know this is kind of sudden and that we donât know each other very well but⊠would you want to get out of here?â
You smiled sheepishly, fiddling with the large bracelets on your wrists. âIâm not much of a party person and Iâve been desperate for an excuse to bounce since this thing started.â You confessed.
But rather than finding your sudden and bold request strange, he only smirked, holding his hand out for you to take. âI go where you go.â He told you without as much as a second thought.
You raised an eyebrow at that, but smirked at him and put your hand in his, and wasted no time in leading him towards your dorms.

Wanna read fics with this OC in it?
For a fic close to canon Gravity Falls (season 3?), read this.
For an AU about Stan and Ford getting a new neighbor at seven-years-old, read this.
Miscellaneous Oc Asks
@cityandking created a (relatively short) list of random, weird, hopefully interesting OC asks. Feel free to specify a character or just send a couple of questions, and then share it around!
What six CDâs would your OC keep in their car? Is it just a taste/preference thing, or do any of them have particular significance? I canât think of any particular CDs, but as far as artists go... Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Queen (or in the Gravity Falls world, the band called King), ACDC, a disk full of instrumental piano music, and a Dolly Parton CD her friend Madeline Ingrid probably gave her.
What does your OC smell like? What does your OC wish they smelled like? Coconut butter, japanese cherry-blossom perfume, and occasionally disinfectant (she works at a hospital). She tried every hard to smell nice, as most women do, and if she feels like work is ruining that, she might use her favorite âstress reliefâ lotion to help overpower the smells of rubber gloves and baby spit up.
How aesthetically-oriented is your OC in their clothing? Their living space? Their general presentation? If their lookâą is mismatched, is that on purpose? Hephzie has a plain, easy-to-follow fashion sense: blue-jeans with t-shirts for casual events, jeans with blouses for nicer days, and occasionally a sweater for the winter. She also has a small love for boysâ clothes; she wonât shy away from mensâ t-shirts or button-ups if they feel nice and look OK. Her living space is relatively tidy (having grown up with grandparents who needed clean floors to avoid falling) but sheâs not a clean freak. Her living space is very artsy and mitch-match, having friends all over the world and she loves learning about different cultures. She might have a rug from India by her bed, but a quilt from Ireland on her bed and a small statue from Hawaii on her dresser. With a bunch of hand-me-downs and mis-match tastes, her overall aesthetic is old and comfort.
What one word would you use to describe your OCâs vibe? Chill.
Whatâs one mundane thing that would throw them off-kilter? Why? Nuclear families. She grew up with her Grandma and Grandpa on her motherâs side. She never knew her father and her mother abandoned her at a hospital, not even waiting to see what would happen to Hephzie. So Hephzie values family very much, but she sees no reason why blood should be the most important factor in the definition in âfamilyâ. The idea of a ânormalâ family, one with two parents who are married and in love, siblings, and occasionally cousins and aunts and uncles, is like a dream to her. Itâs nice, but not for her.
What kind of AU is your OC best suited to? What kind of AU would be the worst? Is there any AU that would be, objectively, just really funny? Hephzie is in 2 AUs: one pretty close to canon Gravity Falls, and one in which she grows up as neighbors to Stan and Ford. Both AUs are very interesting and I love seeing how she responds to each scenario, but I think the more âtragicâ of the two is the canon-like one. Iâve toyed with an AU of her becoming a singer and I can see it going either two ways: either she crumbles under the pressure and gets into drugs and overdoses, or she flourishes and uses her money and power for good, like feeding the hungry and helping the homeless find homes.
If your OC could pick a different name, title, or pseudonym for themself, what would they pick? Why? Have they ever been given an alternate name/title, and how do they feel about it? Well, her birth name is Alicia-Sarah Hephzibah Fisher Cece, but she HATES the name Alicia-Sarah and only goes by Hephzibah/Hephzie. In one AU, she legally âfixesâ her name.
If your OC were playing D&D, what would their race and class be? What backstory tragedyâą would they give their character? Does that reflect their own life in any way? Be honest. Okay, because a certain extra-special person in her life loves D,D, & More D, she plays, too. Sheâs an woodland elf, a healer, and has very little interest in her character, but she likes the storytelling and the praise she gets if she manages to heal a wizard with pointy-ears and fluffy brown hair named Rokuro the Righteous.
Star Wars or Star Trek? A certain boyfriend of hers likes Star Trek better, but she likes Star Wars better. Itâs been a bitter rival since the beginning of time.
If your OC is from a fantasy world, where in the real world would they come from? If your OC is from our world, which fantasy world would they most want to live in? Bonus: Would you ever write/RP them in that world? Hephzie grew up on Irish folktales (her grandmotherâs family is from there), so she would love to meet fĂŠries and see magic and meet a selkie. Screw being a mermaid, she wanted to be a selkie! And... no, donât expect a fic about this.
What plant, animal, and color does your OC feel like today? A Venus Flytrap, a mongoose, and the color dark-green. Itâs been a rough day but sheâs keeping a level head.
If your OC were a superhero, how flashy would their costume be? Also, what would their superpower be? Does this go with their costume at all, or are they all about fashion? #CanâtFightCrimeIfYouAinâtCute Well... in the canon-like AU, sheâs kinda a superhero already, so... think something like a knightâs armor on the arms and legs with a maroon cape. Power would be healing, but she can also fight hella well with a sword and bow-and-arrows. And sheâs never cared about looking good, she just wants to survive the war...
Does your OC thrift? Buy designer? Where would they shop irl? GOODWILL FOR THE WIN!!! She and her friends called it âtreasure huntingâ in high-school and it stuck. She loves it, and when a certain somebody came out with a song about it, she was livid (even if she was fifty-something years old).
Is your OC superstitious? If so, what superstitions do they believe? If not, what do they think of superstitious people? Sheâs constantly around the supernatural and abnormal... and loves it. She thrives off of what is different. So, superstitious?... Hm, she isnât paranoid or afraid; she welcomes it with open arms.
Is your OC religious? Do they want to be? Have they ever been at some time in the past? How complicated is their relationships with worship/the gods/the church/etc? Her grandparents took her to church growing up and she loved the music. Her grandmother was the choir director and her grandfather played the piano, and she had âthe voice of an angelâ, so she happily sang in church, but she kinda stopped going to church when she went to college, but if you ask her sheâll tell you sheâs a Christian. She says it just makes sense to believe in a god; thereâs too much that science canât explain. She also likes studying Buddhism, Islam, and Judaism to learn more about other people and cultures.
Hardwood, tile, or carpet? Hardwood. But she will NEVER say no to a fluffy rug.
Whatâs their go-to parlor trick? Are they actually that good at it, or do they just enjoy it? Do people tell them theyâre good, even if they arenât? How do they handle criticism? I canât really think of a good parlor trick. She has a lot of talents she keeps on the down, like singing and stand-up comedy (donât ask). On another note, she takes criticism overall pretty well.
If your OC could request one boon from a god, what would it be? The extermination of a certain three-sided demon.
Favorite comfort food? Do they enjoy junk food or are they more of a foodie? Can they cook? Whatâs their favorite thing to cook? OREOS are HERS! DONâT TOUCH THEM UNLESS YOU WANNA LOSE A HAND! She also secretly loves watermelon (doesnât like to tell people this) and her comfort food is either hot tea or hot chocolate. Something to warm her hands. And no, she canât cook; she burns everything. EXCEPT, she can brew coffee and sheâs a pretty good barista (was one during college).
Any major theme(s) or conflict(s) in your OCâs life? How have they dealt with that? Are they aware of it, or do they ignore it? Did you design them with such theme(s)/conflict(s) in mind, or did they evolve naturally? Loyalty is a huge one for her. I think so many people have forgotten what it means to be a true friend and what real loyalty looks like. Youâre willing to go far and wide for the people you care about because you want to, because you get fulfillment out of doing the right thing. Hephzie will have your back, no matter what. She doesnât care what race, background, gender, sexuality, religion, she doesnât give a shit. If youâve got her, youâve got a loyal friend. IOne thing she struggled with - and is only semi-aware of it - is loneliness. She finds it suffocating. Itâs slight PTSD from losing so much in her life, and sheâs not terribly clingy, but sheâll wallow about it and sink into depression if she feels abandoned or alone. She NEEDS that reassurance that she is not a freak and not alone and that SOMEONE would care if one day she was gone. This evolved naturally when shaping her backstory and realising it needed to have realistic consequences.
If they could steal one major piece of art with no consequences, what would it be and why? Bonus: how would they pull off the heist? Anything Bob Ross. Loves that guy. And sheâd probably just recrute Stan to help her with either blackmail or her âPlease, for me?â line.
Now itâs YOUR turn!

GO Rom Com Spotlight: @caedmonfaith
The most excellent @caedmonfaithâ (also Caedmon on AO3) has claimed 27 Dresses to adapt for Good Omens in the Good Omens Rom Com Event.
For reference, hereâs a little background about the source material!
About 27 Dresses: Perennial bridesmaid Jane (Katherine Heigl) always puts the needs of others before her own, making her the go-to gal whenever someone needs help with wedding plans. So when Jane's younger sister Tess (Malin Akerman) snags the man (Edward Burns) Jane secretly loves, Jane finds herself questioning her role as a wedding junkie for the first time in her life. Meanwhile, a handsome reporter (James Marsden) sees Jane's unusual story as his ticket off the bridal beat.
We spent some time chatting about how the adaptation is coming so far, as well as future plans for it! Now, get to know @caedmonfaithâ a little better!
* * *
goromcom: Letâs start with something about you. You know how if you open a Tumblr chat with someone you haven't chatted to before, Tumblr tells you two things they post about? I wanted to tell you that yours reports that you post "#black widow and #clintasha". I love learning about which other fandoms all of you are in! Black Widow is amazing, I really like that character!Â
caedmonfaithâ: Yep, caedmonfaith is my tumblr, and that's the only social media I have that's not facebook, really. And that's really interesting about the tags I'm associated with! Clintasha is the very first ship I wrote for, the ship that pulled me into fanfiction and started me on this wild journey, but I haven't written for Clintasha in almost five years. I guess maybe I was just more active on tumblr then, and that's why they're like that? I don't know... seems like Doctor Who would be one of the tags, since I wrote 141 Doctor/Rose fics! LOL And yeah, Black Widow/Natasha Romanov is amazing. I love her so much. I miss writing for her, honestly, but Good Omens has sucked up all of my attention.Â
goromcom: Oh, I miss Rose so much, too. I really loved that era of Who. But letâs move on to your romcom! You are adapting 27 Dresses as your romcom. Has this movie been a favorite of yours, or is there some other reason you chose it?
caedmonfaithâ: I didn't actually mean to choose 27 Dresses - it wasn't my first choice! My first choice was 10 Things I Hate About You. As soon as I saw the list of romcoms, I decided that was the one I wanted, and started plotting the story. I needed to pick more than one romcom, though, for claims (I believe the number we were supposed to pick was ten), so I picked nine other movies I thought I might be able to do something with without putting a lot of thought into it, because I was caught up in 10 Things. I used a randomizer to sort them, with 10 Things at the top of the list, and 27 Dresses just happened to be second. But due to a laggy connection to google docs, I got my claim form in about sixty seconds too late and my first choice was taken my the amazing Mia_Ugly! I was salty about it for a hot minute, then sucked it up. Â I realized that she'd do an amazing job and got really excited to see what she would do. She's such a brilliant writer.Â
As far as 27 Dresses goes... I remember seeing it when it first came out and thinking it was super cute. I'm a  sucker for romantic comedies, anyway, especially when they involve weddings, and James Marsden is absolutely beautiful. It's no hardship to look at him. This was my favorite role Katherine Heigl played, too. I remember watching the movie multiple times when it came out, because I enjoyed it so much.
goromcom: What's your favorite moment of your movie, and are you looking forward to presenting it in your adaptation? Any loose plans for that scene that you can share?
caedmonfaithâ: My absolute favorite moment in the movie is one that isn't going to make it into my story, unfortunately. It's when Kevin is at Jane's apartment and she's trying on dresses to show him the range of things she's worn for all the weddings she's been in. She comes out in a ridiculous, hokey dress, and he says, "What is that?!" Â She replies with a smile, "It was a theme wedding!" And he comes back with, "What was the theme? Humiliation?" I remember being really tickled by that line at the time, and it's the biggest moment that's stuck in my memory. Unfortunately, I don't have an organic place to put that line, so I'm having to scrap it.
goromcom: Do you plan to stick very closely to the beats of the original story, or make bigger changes?
caedmonfaithâ: Confession time: I haven't seen the movie in ten years, since I was pregnant with my middle child! I debated about whether to watch it again to refresh my memory or to go ahead without watching, and to be honest, I'm still debating whether to watch it or not. I didn't want to follow the film too closely - I wanted to put my own spin on it, and worried that if the movie was fresh in my mind, I'd be more inclined to follow it too closely. But my beta has suggested that I rewatch, so I'm on the fence.Â
I'm keeping the broad strokes of the film, but making some pretty significant changes. Crowley is playing the Kevin character, and he's a reporter who has recently had a 'fall from grace' after publishing some unflattering information about his publisher's wife. That's fairly consistent with the film, as I recall. But Aziraphale is taking the Jane role, and I've had to change him up quite a bit. In my story, he's a very sought-after wedding planner, nicknamed the 'Angel of Love'. In the film, Jane is in love with her boss and heartbroken when her sister, Tess, manages to catch his heart. The movie revolves largely around her turmoil over being a bridesmaid for Tess while watching the man she loves marry someone else. None of that made it into my story. There's no love triangle.
goromcom: Oh, I personally appreciate that change. Love triangles are not my bag, though they must be someoneâs, as they seem to make it into lots of media.
Other than that, what's an interesting decision you've made in your planning so far--a notable casting decision, a changing of venue, or some other plan you have to paint Good Omens all over your rom com?
caedmonfaithâ: The film takes place in an American city I don't recall, but I've relocated my story to London (and Tadfield). I have Crowley in the Kevin role and Aziraphale in the Jane role, as the romantic leads. Anathema features heavily in the story as a matchmaking American heiress who has made her home in England and writes occult books. Newt is her hapless fiance, a boring accountant who indulges his love's every whim. Madame Tracy is Aziraphale's assistant, and is married to Shadwell. I'm throwing in nods to canon as much as I'm able without shoehorning them: I don't want them to feel forced.
goromcom: I am blatantly stealing this last question from The Good Place: The Podcast, but here goes: Tell me something "good". It can be something big or small. It can be a charity you think is doing good work, or you can talk about how great your pet is.
caedmonfaithâ: Oh goodness, this is a dangerous question. I have three beautiful, amazing kids, ages 14, 10, and 8, and they're all three awesome. My husband is handsome, wonderful, and incredibly indulgent of my fanfic writing, and I'm very lucky to have him. I could rhapsodize about any or all of them for hours, but I'll spare you.
I guess the most significant exciting thing on my horizon is that I have a major milestone birthday coming up on March 5. I'll be 29 again! (I'll actually be 40.)To celebrate, my best friend is throwing me a huge party at her house, and I have close friends flying into my town from New Hampshire and Seattle to spend a four-day weekend with my BFF and I. We have tons of plans to do fun stuff, and I simply can't wait. Happy Birthday to me!
goromcom: Indeed! 40 is slightly in the rear view mirror for me, so I feel like I can tell you that Iâve had a lot of fun with the ages that begin with a 4 so far. I hope yours are just as good. :)
And speaking of things that are good, make sure to catch the marvelous GO adaptation of 17 Dresses, coming very soon!

Mun talks about her D&D characters for munday
I thought itâd be fun to let yaâll hear about them. Also I know a ton of them start with L names, Iâm sorry and I donât know how this happened.Â
Lokni-Human Blood Hunter (TW: death, demons, sex, child neglect, pregnancy complications) Life goal: To kill Raktos the demon Campaign: Ravnica
The current favorite of my friends who Iâve played a few games with. Personally I think he has one of the most tragic backstories but I had to give him an intense one cause he has a very dramatic goal. The campaign is set in Ravnica which for those who donât know is a setting where most things take place in a large city where power is divided by guilds. My child is in the Raktos guild which is the ones who throw parties put on shows, and run the brothels. Thing is they also kinda murder folks alot, live on the idea of viva la anarchy and they do this to keep their guild leader, a massive demon happy so he doesnât end the world. Now that youâre caught up his story goes as follows. He was born to two parents, things were great, his mom got preggers, she was out with her husband and got dragged into a Raktos show cause they do that, she was injured and basically it became either save her or her unborn child and he insisted on the child. Dad blames the kid for loosing his wife, neglects teh child, Lokni also a child adopts his dadâs mindset being confused and hurt, family friend of mom takes in unwanted child (she is a centaur by the way), Lokni realizes eventually his dad really doesnât care about him either as dad slips further into insanity about wanting to bring his wife back, Lokni decides to go apologize to bro who instantly forgives to live with centaur mom. Later they are told their dad is dead getting mixed up with the wrong people (however based on hints from the dm I fear he is not dead and also fear when the dm brings him back). His goal as a character is this: He wants to make sure no family ever ends up ripped apart like his so he wants to kill Raktos and put someone else on the throne, not him cause he recognizes he is not emotionally stable enough to run anything. Although originally I was planning on making him more obsessive about his goals and basically become his dad, obsession and hurt drives people to crazy things, but he kinda ended up finding a 16 year old ghost girl in the woods whoâs been stuck to possess a knife and basically was like,âwell this child clearly has a rough time in life Iâm gonna adopt them!â and fatherhood is forcing this man to rethink things cause murdering Raktos=major trouble and he doesnât want to rip up this new family heâs making so now considering teleporting him away? changing him to be a good person? Yeh itâs getting complicated. OH and he was kind of forced to drink some potion stuff, cause his boss is crazy (she has a ghost choir that she possibly killed everyone there, complete with a kazoo section cause ya boi Lokni on a whim said it needed more kazoos and she listened to him cause he knows music, he plays the spoons and does magic tricks btw as a job, so clearly he knows what heâs talking about) and ye so he is a fox lycanthropy now.
Lapis Lazuil/Laz-Triton, Cleric. Life goal: Literally be the best monster killer Campaign: Regular D&D 5e
Basically we had a D&D show we were filming at school up until things got too busy with the main show we were producing. This character came before Lokni and we were told,âhey so your characters are monster hunters at this guild but theyâve all kind of been kicked out of their former parties for one reason or another which yaâll can decide and this is your last chance to stay in the guild.â Me: âcool imma make a triton that hates water, and their a tempest cleric.â Dm: â....why, why are you like this.â Me: âYOU SAID MAKE BAD DECISIONS!â So ye thatâs how Laz was made. Her story is that she was adopted by rock genasi. She thinks her parents abandoned her. Truth is they just fell on hard times just before she was born and well couldnât afford a child so did what they could now trying to find her. So she changed her birth name to be named after a rock like the rest of what she considers her real family. She also has the attitude of the stereotypical highschool cheerleader on disney movies and talks like one too but with a more raspy voice because she is dehydrated, again she hates water because of her hatred for her âreal familyâ and also she genuinely doesnât like the way it feels,âItâs just liiiike the worst ya know, um like on my skin....yeah so donât pass out in water or whatever cause like I probs wonât try to heal you....sorry not sorry.â That was literally her first line to the rest of the party. I now use her in one offs and like low key she is alot of fun.Â
Luc-Pantoran (I forgot the class and the dm still has our character sheets cause thank you virus) Life goal: Clear their name! Campaign: StarwarsÂ
So first of all funny thing about this one is that usually I have a gender and voice made pretty early into creating a character. With this person....I did not, like literally I got everything else figured out except these two details so I decided,âYou know what! You donât get either of them!â Their story went like this, they have 12 siblings ok, super rural regular family in the inner planets. All of their siblings are wildly successful and they were average. They knew they couldnât really succeed like everyone else but hey did find themselves enjoying being a nuisance so basically when asked what they wanted to do with their life they would look up at the adult asking and just go,âCrime.â SO thatâs exactly what they did. Once they became an adult they ran off, used sleeping with folks to get what and where they wanted, eventually joined a pirate crew, and life was great. They were so good, and kind of had a thing going with the captain that they became first mate. Pretty recently they realized they didnât relate to either gender and became non binary, they also are still trying to figure out their voice so it would change rather often. Thing is they got framed for stealing from the captain, and hey theyâve done alot of bad but they HAVE NOT broken trust like that, after all they actually cared about the captain, and for once was considering being just with them instead of sleeping around. Nonetheless they are on the run now trying to clear their name. Their theme as a character is,âhey you know that little voice in your head that tells you not to do something, ye they donât have that. Just a voice that says, do what ya wanna do pal!â
Clarity-Robot, vault dweller (Tw: death mention, human experimentation, dog experimentation) Life goal: Just see the world Campaign: Fall out
I love this character so much she is a baby however her theme is,âdepending on perspectives people can come across as wildly different things.â So If youâve played fall out no sheâs not a Mr. Handy or one of the robots that looks incredibly human like. We decided an amalgamation of the two fit her story better and it was available in the unofficial fall out table top we were playing. She looks humanish, a human like form but with clear casing showing her inner workings and a human mask to try to look more friendly. Sheâs got on a little yellow dress on too, very vintage, and with the sweetest most innocent sounding voice. She even travels with a Dalmatian who, as a robot could think of only the most appropriate name to describe her grizzled hound, Spot. As for fighting one arm can transform into a flame thrower and the other into a chain saw. Also as a robot she can not go against programming. She also makes comments such as,âI am overjoyed you will not become a plant!â âOh no donât pick flowers! I would hate to hurt the plant...â âAre you sure the grass will not mind if I step on it?â If you have played fallout you might know where this is going. Basically there are 2 vaults that are important, both of them are found over grown with plants one containing half human half plant monstrous creatures. Her story is that she was in the vault that laster holds the monstrous creatures. Her programming was to continue the experiment, the experiment to combine humans with plants in an attempt to improve upon humans. She could not tell the humans what she was doing, and she could not stop the experiment until it was complete. There were dogs there under her command to be used as experiments too or keep the plants in line. So the chain saw and flamethrower were to stop unruly plant monsters from attacking her and keep them in line until finally the order came that the experiment was over and she was no longer needed. So she left, secretly horrified by her actions attempting to avoid ever processing what she witnessed fully through her system. She wants to see the world for herself now with her dog friend. Again when people meet her she seems like a sweet angel going so far as to worry about even the feelings of plants, but for anyone who was in that vault they would see her as a very different person.

Top 5 Favorite Sanders Sides Videos (3/5)
To celebrate the three-year anniversary of the first Sanders Sides video, Iâve decided to count down my Top 5 Favorite Sanders Sides videos! Weâre only halfway through the list, so letâs continue.
#3 is... âLearning New Things About Ourselvesâ
youtube
GENERAL THOUGHTS
This video, I did not expect to enjoy a lot. But I did anyway. I think what really sold me was the message/lesson it was conveying, because moving forward in what you do/plan on doing, you are bound to face that question. And I was too earlier this month, but Iâd rather not get into too much detail. I will say that what Iâm doing now is the choice I want to make moving forward in life.
The other thing I really enjoyed that this was a Puppets video. Sesame Street was something I grew up watching when I was a little girl, and I got pretty much all of that watching this 38-minute video. I can tell that a lot of artistry went into the actual bits of the Puppets, from the craftsmanship to the actual puppeteering. I was thoroughly fascinated seeing the behind-the-scenes video to this Sanders Sides video too. Even if I didnât see it before, I could instantly tell that a lot of work and effort was put into this video. From a behind-the-scenes, nostalgic and message standpoint, this is one of my absolute favorites.
FAVORITE PARTS/LINES OF DIALOGUE (in no particular order)
I LOVED the Sidesâ puppets designs. Joan did an amazing job making concept designs for the puppets, and the same goes to Adam Kreutinger for bringing their artistic vision to life. Roman has my favorite design, because of that nostalgic feeling I get looking at him, and Virgilâs puppet look is a very close second!
âIâm shooting straight, even though Iâm gay.â
The SONG. I have zero regrets purchasing it from Google Play last month. I never could recall the lyrics the first few times listening to it, but the tune really stuck.
I also enjoy Roman and Loganâs monologues to each other after the song.
âMaybe because the problem is the opposite of cut and dry!â âUh, intact and wet!â
Virgil immediately regretting turning himself into a puppet.
The fact that Roman drew the Mona Lisa in a Dora the Explorer coloring book with only four crayons.
âSweet Coraline!â âBa, ba, ba!â
All the puppet/educational show references.
âThank you, you shadowy, but angelic songbird.â âYou got it, Pop star.â â*gasps* You gave me a Dad-themed nickname!â
The Cogitating Cap. Can that return in the merch shop? I kind of want to get one. XD
âOh my gosh, what is up your butt?â âAn ARM!â
Loganâs reaction to taking Virgilâs âlighting fires under your buttsâ statement literally.
Patton having no filter in the start of the video. Oh, sweet boy. That entire bit cracked a massive smile on my face.
âYouâre lost.â âIâm right here.â
Moxiety! Iâm not sure if there was an official video heavily revolving around these two. If there wasnât, Thomas and friends, please make it happen in a future video, and not just in small moments. I wanna see a video centered around these two!
âUptown funking you up.â
I love how Patton and Virgilâs verses in the song are callbacks to âMoving Onâ and âAccepting Anxietyâ respectively. I hope we get another two-part video.
*holds up a âSamesiesâ flashcard* âSame-size.â Totally didnât butcher it, Logan.
âI know that face. My child is returning.â *Virgil appears* Honestly, this entire entrance is probably my favorite of Virgilâs in this series.
âWhy did I never question peopleâs belitting views on what I do?â Powerful question.
More stretchy arms!
âIâd rather go live in a garbage can.â
Puppet Logan and Romanâs high five. I loved this bit even more knowing the bloopers that happened filming that particular moment. Iâm still giggling over the fact that Thomas accidentally poked his own eye.
âLook, Iâm not choosing sides here-.â âSanders Sides!â
Pattonâs hormone/rain monologue in the middle of the song. I could tell by watching the bloopers that it was an absolute nightmare for Thomas to deliver, because of how fast Patton is rambling.
How Virgilâs face twisted after a couple of the cutesy nicknames by Patton were thrown at him while they were still puppets. Major props to Nate Begle for making Puppet Virgil SO expressive!
âOh my gosh! I will kill both of you... With my bare hands... and this sword.â The freaking improvising WORKED. And that smile at the end.
Virgil telling Patton not to give him the cutesy nicknames. I know this is kind of a sad moment, but Virgil came off as a freaking dork at the end in his attempts to sound cool.
âDonât assume, Roman! You know what happens when you assume? You make an âasâ out of âsuâ and âmeâ.â
The fact that Virgil jumped in the bit after his solo following Thomas and Loganâs argument. Sudden loud noises.

the lost boys + names
so if youâve been following my lost boys obsession, youâll have noticed me just absolutely gushing about so many things that really got me hooked into the movieâs clutches, but one thing i decided to save for its own post was my affection for the way the characters are named.Â
in particular, the first pair of names that really jumped out at me were edgar and alan frog, for the obvious edgar allan poe reference reasons. i think those names are fitting insofar as the frog brothers are, as sam kind of points out, a little grimdark and morose (even though theyâre right about the whole âvampires in santa carlaâ thing, they could probably stand to lighten up a little about it, right?), which is pretty much poeâs brand name. on a different level, given what little we see of their parents, it kind of makes me wonder if those are the boyâs given names; we see the talk about ex-hippies being hazardous to their childrenâs given names with michael âmoonchildâ emerson and star, but edgar allan poe wasnât exactly famous for resonating with the hippie movement, either.
the tv tropes page for the lost boys acknowledges the meaningful name connotations latent in âlucyâ and âmaxâ: lucy, for the character lucy westenra, who was turned by dracula into a vampire (as was maxâs plan for lucy emerson), and max, for max schreck, who played count orlok in nosferatu, a film mentioned by name in the lost boys.Â
now, hereâs the part where the post takes a turn for the âok, youâre reaching,â so bear with me. honestly, none of the lost boyâs names jumped out at me in particular (as far as i know, none of them have any particularly meaningful connotations, theyâre just, you know, names), except for david... but ONLY in conjuncture with star. now, itâs impossible to tell whether or not this was the intention of the writers, but the fact that there are two pretty major characters in the movie with the names âdavidâ and âstar,â especially when theyâre said in the same line (when michael corners david on the boardwalk, he asks âwhereâs star, davidâ), invokes magen david, the star of david, pretty decisively. perhaps this is especially augmented by something my dad said when we were watching the lost boys together; when the boys went to collect star as she meant to go off with michael, he had a comment that went something like âoh yeah, i think she kind of belongs to them.â now, iâm obviously opposed on principle to the idea that girls can belong to guys in general, or that star actually belongs to the lost boys like an item in this specific case, but i donât think the observation was that far off; she definitely feels that she has to go to david, specifically, when he comes calling, even though itâs pretty clear that sheâd rather go get food with michael like he offered. this element of possessiveness kind of rounds out the association; literally, sheâs the star of david. so what does that mean?
well, the star of david is obviously the modern symbol of judaism (worth noting here, i suppose, that starâs actress, jami gertz, is a jewish woman). however, as a symbol, it has no real backing in the torah, only really popping up in the last few hundred years as we know it now. the website my jewish learning offers a few explanations of possible meanings: franz rosenzweig wrote about it as the star of redemption, a theme which fits with starâs desire to undo what sheâs done in giving up her humanity, while kabbalists used it as a symbol of protection against evil spirits, which can be read into her role in shielding michael from the lost boys, AND in her role in shielding laddie from the frog brothersâ attacks. no matter what the intention in these names were (and i fully acknowledge i might just be reading too much into what was never supposed to be this deep), i think these explanations are worth noting as insights into starâs motivations and her role in the movie.
in my previous posts, i talked a little bit about starâs name outside of the star of david bit, examining the conversation she had with michael where he suggested that her parents called her that because they were ex-hippies, like his, and came to the conclusion that it may be possible that her parents werenât the ex-hippies, but rather, she was, meaning that star has been with the lost boys for a lot longer than most people think. basically, starâs name has a bunch of layers metatextually, and i donât think that we would have gotten a whole conversation between the two of them about where her name came from if we werenât supposed to think about that for a little bit.Â
we stan a queen.
finally, and this one iâll admit is REALLY off the shits, i want to examine the names michael and sam in connection with one another. my own personal bias is really shining through right here, and i want to get that out of the way first and foremost. michael, right now, is pretty much my favorite name, specifically because of my intense interest in angelology and, in particular, the archangel michael. naturally, when i realized that the lost boys had a michael as the main character, i was immediately on the lookout for anything that gave it a Meaningful Name(tm) status, and so when his brother was introduced as sam, i was kind of... excited, to say the least. you see, one relationship iâm really interested in, fictionally, is the sibling-esque bond that people like to examine between archangels, and in particular, the michael & lucifer relationship is my most favorite. the thing is, another name for lucifer that a lot of that type of media in particular uses is sammael... which, obviously, could easily shorten to âsam.âÂ
in the context of the movie, sam being the one connected to sammael, the fallen angel, the one who disobeyed godâs will and took the path forbidden from him, and michael being the one connected to, like, st. michael, the leader of godâs army, seems a bit... backward. obviously iâm stretching so hard iâve dislocated my shoulder, but i think it might be interesting if that were on purpose; meaningful names that invoke the most famous angels, but then the characters marked with them go the opposite directions of their namesakes, and it becomes up to sam to bring michael back on the right path.Â
...food for thought, i guess? let me know what you think, or if you have any other names from the movie that stuck out to you! this is my absolute favorite thing to analyze honestly.Â
#the lost boys#edgar frog#alan frog#lucy emerson#max tepsch#david#star#michael emerson#sam emerson#text post#ok i KNOW that last one is so far out there but i just had to get it off my chest or i wouldn't be able to forgive myself#i've been thinking about it since the first time i watched#aaaaaaaaa
