Do you know a Coriolanus Snow?
So, let me preface this by saying I have not read any of the Hunger Games books (it's just not my preferred genre). Instead, recently I went to see the Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes movie with my roomie, who loves the books and recently read the prequel and described the whole plot to me before we went. Watching the film and listening to her description of the books I was struck by something: Suzanne Collins has done a wonderful job portraying everyday evil's perfectly pleasant face. Coriolanus has friends. He's smart, driven, charming, but also stilted and awkward. He loves his family. He feels shame about the poverty he and his family has fallen into. He is also, an utter douchebag who knows how to play both sides and seem like a good person. Sejanus believes Coriolanus is on his side the entire time. He gets frustrated with him, but still believes Coriolanus can be reached. Lucy Grey believes in Coriolanus because she sees him make efforts to help her (I understand in the book she's portrayed as more canny than the movies and less overall trusting of Coriolanus. In the films she comes off as hesitant but overall, like Sejanus, convinced that Coriolanus will be swayed.). Coriolanus is careful to always hide his intentions or frame them in a "helping you helps me" way. But, his bottom line actions are always about saving his own skin. The film is brutal. It serves as a brilliant metaphor for a lot of the racist, classist violence within the United States and the ways in which imperialism comes home to roost by feeding on vulnerable communities. Coriolanus serves as a perfect metaphor for the countless every day people who, believing that they are temporarily disadvantaged and superior, not only reject invitations to resist, they sabotage them. Coriolanus moves through the world with a deep sense of entitlement that keeps him from empathizing with others who share the same plights as him. The people from the districts are meant to live in the country backwoods, eating katniss and dancing to bluegrass. He is meant to rise in the ranks and return to the capitol. Because he is educated and they are not. Because he is from an Old Family and they are not. A life with the covey on the edge of district twelve, surrounded by beautiful greenery with the chance to catch and forage for your own food would mean not wanting for anything, but it would not have status. No one would be kissing his ass and singing his praises. Coriolanus before all the gunfights, could have found a way to move Tigris and Gram out to the district and build a life there. But it never even occurred to him. Living a quiet life with Lucy Grey would never satisfy Coriolanus because he doesn't just want to never be hungry again. He wants to have power over others. Which is why he betrays Sejanus when he could have kept his mouth shut. He did it to save his own skin. He did it to regain access to the capitol by getting Dr. Gaul's attention. Every turn Coriolanus takes is for the worst. Until he is staggering through the woods with an automatic rifle, looking all the world like a wet skin head as he bellows Lucy Grey's name into the dim. I can see why some fans were angry with this book. I think there is a desire to believe that every asshole has a reason for winding up cruel. That something drove them over the edge. But Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes breaks that concept apart, brick by brick. Coriolanus is not special, in his hunger, in his desperation, in his poverty, in his loss. He's not special in being exposed to the capitol's brutal propaganda. Everywhere around him in the story, are people resisting their fates without stepping on someone else's neck. But Coriolanus, with all his good looks and fumbling charm, will ultimately step on a throat if it helps him up. I've met a lot of Coriolanuses. Lovely snakes. How many times have you met Coriolanus? When did he take the chance to bite you instead of smile?

my specialty in my digital photography/stop-motion class in college was to make pieces very skillfully executed that you could not look at directly lest they give you a migraine. one time the assignment was just a simple stop motion walkthrough of someplace on campus with a filter & transition effect to show that we understood how to use the video software. i inflicted upon the class an abomination in the rainbow chroma filter that RIPPLED with every single frame change and the professor made me stop it after 5 seconds and gave me a 100. then asked me for a copy to show future students what NOT TO DO.
my logic(correct) was that if you could not look at it you could not give me a bad grade on it.

i haven’t read the books but a show about a trio who have great natural chemistry, found family vibes, great dialogue, amazing plot, fighting ghosts/supernatural elements, each of them have special powers and skills, each character have a proper development and story, awesome dynamic… is so so so good. their dynamic reminds me of the one between the beloved trio - harry, ron and hermione. i love lockwood, lucy and george. also the whump is great (lockwood is angsty, reserved emotionally detached individual who has a traumatic past and THAT cliffhanger was brutal). the way lucy protects lockwood and george and vice versa is EVERYTHING! THEY ARE MY FAMILY. here i am, yet again, deeply invested and in love with a new netflix show that might or might not get renewed asdfghjkll WHY DO I TORTURE MYSELF LIKE THIS? KNOWING FULL WELL THAT NETFLIX GIVETH AND NETFLIX TAKETH AWAY FML
look at them! the boys comforting lucy. lockwood holding lucy’s hand ahhhh… every time lockwood and lucy hold hands… i melt THE CHEMISTRY IS CHEMISTRYING

Shadows of Fear: Sugar and Spice (1.2, Thames, 1971)
"You might have known that children can't keep promises."
"Promises, what promises?"
"You shouldn't have told her if you didn't want me to know."
"Know what?"
"She said that you'd taken him to -"
"Where?"
#shadows of fear#sugar and spice#1971#horror tv#classic tv#thames#single play#patrick dromgoole#john kershaw#sheila hancock#ronald hines#suzanne togni#ivor salter#janet hannington#i think I'll add the horror tv tag onto these from now on; whilst that first ep (really more of a pilot‚ as mentioned in the tags on that#post) acted more as a kind of mildly creepy suspense piece‚ i feel like we're more comfortably in horror territory here. not supernatural#horror to be clear (i don't remember the series ever going there) but certainly within that realm of 'intended to be unsettling' that most#tv attempts at horror from the era fall into. this is certainly a much darker piece‚ imo‚ than the first one: Sheila Hancock's young son is#missing and her daughter acting very strangely‚ claiming their father took him... something he denies. it's (like all of these episodes) a#cheap production: a couple of sets‚ a very small cast. but the cast here is a winner‚ with the late great Hines wringing real complex#responses from him variously pitiable and loathsome drunken father‚ and Hancock switching between bristling indignation and barely#controlled hysteria. the standout tho is young Togni‚ who gives a quite frankly brilliant performance as the troubled daughter who may or#may not be playing games. she was actually nearly 20 despite playing what is clearly intended to be a 13 or 14 yr old#and appears to have given up acting very soon after this play aired; a great pity because her disturbing‚ mercurial presence here hints at#an actor of real depth and skill. it all ends quite nastily so be warned‚ this isn't a light bit of afternoon telly‚ it's truly dark

Ten days ago Schitt's Creek celebrated its first day on set. And like Kim's Convenience, I haven't finished watching its last season! I've perhaps watched a couple of episodes a year since the pandemic. For two reasons: first, because I can't watch without my sister and we don't live together anymore, and also because the Roses are family too, and I'm not ready to say goodbye!
