Kokiri World Building

Children, Kids and Lost Children

The Kokiri all claim the Great Deku Tree as their father. Some of them are spirits of various trees or other plants given further life while others were Lost Children that became part of the Woods. Whatever the case all of the Kokiri are called Children of the Forest. They each gain a fairy companion that further binds them to the natural world and that coupled with their general unwillingness to leave the woods leaves them unable to do so after a long enough time. The process usually takes one full season cycle.

Koroks are similar to the Kokiri but less attached to a more Hylian appearance and are often children that came to life from other plants or from young trees. According to some it is said that Koroks have the remnants of the spirits of fallen Fairies or of their older counterparts which is why they seldom seem to change but only some can see them.

Kikwis are believed to be the ancient Koroks and Kokiri before their forms no longer suited life in the Woods and the Fairies, the Great Mothers of the Fairies, blessed them with new forms according to the Great Deku Tree.

Kids are the Skull Kids. They are Lost Children that have grown too old for a fairy to claim and aid properly. They are cruel because while they are part of the Woods and they have some magics similar to the other Children they have other magics more similar to the Poe that dwell in the Woods thanks to their association with decay.

Lost Children are children that were left in or near the Woods or that wandered into it themselves. They can become a part of the Forest, becoming one of the Children or the Kids, or they can find their way outside the Woods. They have magic from the Woods that grows over time and are typically raised alongside the Kokiri as they look most like them. The Lost Children all have the hope of becoming proper Children of the Forest and are often very adept at using Nature magics, particularly Cleansing magics but often don't realize their abilities.

Most of the Children and Lost Children have a strong affinity for Fairies and they also have a strong sense of how healthy the land they are in is. It is instinctive for them to try and purity it. The Fairies are often willing to help and heal them as well as keeping them from becoming Skull Kids to a point, the adage of age causing magic to grow is true and Fairies can only prevent one of the Lost Children from becoming a Skull Kid for so long which is why adults often become Stalfos instead of their more benign counterparts the Skull Kids.

the funniest meltdown ive ever had was in college when i got so overstimulated that i could Not speak, including over text. one of my friends was trying to talk me through it but i was solely using emojis because they were easier than trying to come up with words so he started using primarily emojis as well just to make things feel balanced. this was not the Most effective strategy... until. he tried to ask me "you okay?" but the way he chose to do that was by sending "👉🏼👌🏼❓" and i was so shocked by suddenly being asked if i was dtf that i was like WHAT???? i am lucky, i live in a safe neighborhood in a safe state. my masc passenger princess comes up from DC. i drive her for an hour to where all the leaves are a violent arrangement of color. we walk along the trails, letting autumn into our blood. in this part of the state, there's a lot of pickup trucks and trump signs. when we chastely kiss before getting into the car, i accidentally make eye contact with a woman holding her child's wrist. she looks disgusted. she looks fucking pissed.

two hours later my girl and i are eating dinner on a patio, soaking in the last warmth of new england sun before the chill of winter sets in. we are giggling and trying to talk through plastic vampire teeth. at another table, i see a young woman sit up straighter. i watch her watch us. she blushes and takes her partner's hand from across the table. shy, like the taste of evening has just become something deeper.

it's worth it for this moment, i think. my lover is still humming the same song she's been singing for four days straight and i don't want to kill her for it. her guitar is beside my bed. her toothbrush is in my bathroom. in a few moments i will make us lunch. we are lucky enough to have found each other. it is lucky enough to be in love.

I have seen the men who are doctors refuse to leave their patients, even when they have no medicine or supplies to give them, even when they're threatened with bombings. I have seen fathers who have lost all their children pick orphans up into their arms and proclaim them their child so they are not alone. I have seen men and boys digging pets out of the rubble.

the men are innocent too. the men and boys are being hurt and killed too. the men and boys are grieving too. the men and boys are scared too. the men and boys are fighting to save their people too. the men and boys deserve to be fought for too.
