So, I watched the 1922 movie Nosferatu, because of course I´ll watch a silent era German expressionist flick in my spare time, and I actually really liked it.
It is true that this is very far from a faithful adaptation of Dracula, but I knew that going in (nothing can be worse then the Ford-Coppola version, right?). Judging this movie sorely on the basis of taking “inspiration” from the Dracula novel, and being an otherwise original work, the movie really was interesting to see. The actors did a great job of conveying the sort of emotions and personalities they were supposed to present, and even managed to add a lot of charm to them. Helen and her husband are especially adorable.
Speaking of Helen, while clearly not presented as refined as Mina, I do love that in this version she is still a very “active” character, and its through her initiative that the titular vampire is finally defeated. Thats clearly a win. And th actor who portrays Count Orlok did also a phenomenal job, his very body language coveys such creepiness, not to mention the fantastic make-up on him.
The sets were great, the costumes were great, and the cinematography is truly iconic.
