The air was damp. Not cold enough for snow, but enough to seep into your clothes and settle in your spine. You were kneeling near the fire pit, trying to get the soaked logs to catch, even though you knew it was pointless.

Mari was across the clearing, snapping kindling with way more force than necessary. You didn’t have to look to know she was watching you.

“She ever gonna do something useful?” Mari muttered.

You froze. Again.

“Mari,” Nat warned, not even looking up from where she was twisting rope. She sounded tired.

Mari ignored her. “I’m serious. We’re all out here working. She just drifts around like it’s some art school camping trip.”

You stood up slowly, brushing dirt off your knees. You didn’t say anything. That never helped.

“I don’t know why we’re all supposed to pretend she’s pulling her weight when she barely even talks to anyone.”

You opened your mouth, but before you could say a word, Shauna was already moving.

She dropped the knife she was cleaning and crossed the clearing fast. No warning. No big announcement. Just a flash of movement and then Mari was shoved hard into the trunk of a tree.

The camp went dead quiet.

“What the fuck is wrong with you?” Shauna snapped, right in her face. “You want someone to blame? Say it to me. I’m right here.”

Mari shoved at her. “Get off me!”

Shauna didn’t move. “You think you’re better because you can carry wood and run your mouth? You think that makes you worth more out here?”

“She’s useless, Shauna!”

“She’s still here, isn’t she?” Shauna shouted. “After everything? After however long we’ve been stuck in this fucking place? That makes her more useful than half of you.”

“Shauna!” Natalie barked, standing now. “That’s enough.”

Shauna’s breathing was hard and uneven. She stared at Mari for a second longer, jaw clenched, then finally stepped back.

Mari scoffed, rubbing her shoulder. “You’re losing it.”

Shauna didn’t answer. She just turned around and walked straight toward you.

“I don’t know why we’re all supposed to pretend she’s pulling her weight when she barely even talks to anyone.”

You opened your mouth, but before you could say a word, Shauna was already moving.

“Come on,” she said under her breath. “We’re going.”

You hesitated, looking around. No one met your eyes.

“Where?”

“Anywhere she’s not.”

You followed her down toward the river, away from the clearing. You could still hear Mari ranting behind you, but it all started to blur once you hit the treeline.

Shauna didn’t stop until you reached the water. She kicked a rock hard into the stream, then just stood there, hands on her hips, breathing like she’d just run a mile.

“You didn’t have to do that,” you said quietly.

She turned. “Yeah. I did.”

You frowned. “It’s not like she’s wrong. I’m not exactly—”

“Don’t,” she cut in, voice sharp. “Don’t say it.”

“But I haven’t been pulling my weight.”

“You’ve been surviving,” she said. “Same as the rest of us. And if anyone thinks that’s not enough, they can go eat bark and shut the fuck up.”

You looked at her. She was shaking, just a little, from the adrenaline. Or the anger. Or both.

“You always jump in when it’s about me,” you said, not accusing just... curious.

Shauna ran a hand through her hair. “I know.”

“Why?”

She didn’t answer right away. Just looked down at the river.

“I don’t know,” she finally said. “You get under my skin. And when people talk to you like you don’t matter it makes me feel like I don’t either.”

That hit harder than you expected.

“I’m not trying to make anything harder for anyone.”

“You’re not,” she said quickly. “But... I see you, alright? You don’t talk much. But you keep showing up. You’re quiet, but you’re still here. And sometimes I think if you weren’t... I’d come unglued.”

You didn’t know what to say to that. Neither did she.

So you sat down near the river, knees pulled to your chest. After a second, she sat next to you, arms resting on her legs.

“I don’t know what this is,” she said, voice low. “What I feel. It’s not clean. It’s not... sweet. But it’s real.”

You turned to look at her. “Yeah. It is.”

For a while, you just sat there. You didn’t touch. You didn’t need to.

She stared out at the water like it might tell her something she couldn’t say out loud.

But you already knew. And maybe that was enough.

۫ ꣑ৎ Luke treats you less like her second-in-command and more like a goddess she worships. Her war table has a permanent seat next to her for you, and it’s not even labeled. Everyone just knows not to sit there. Even just the way she looks at you makes the other demi-gods in her army know that she may not worship the gods, but she undoubtedly worships you.

۫ ꣑ৎ Every weapon she owns has some small marker of you—your initials on the hilt of his blade,  a small cracked charm hanging from her belt that only you recognize. Luke's rebellion may be for Kronos, but everything else? That's all for you. She’s doing this for you.

۫ ꣑ৎ Luke and you are inseparable. She dislikes going on missions without you and whenever the two of you are at the same base Luke refuses to leave your side. Luke usually isn’t a huge fan of PDA, preferring to usually just have a hand around you or holding you, but after not seeing you for who knows how long? She can’t keep her hands off of you.

۫ ꣑ৎ Her army—monsters, demigods—they all respect you. But that doesn’t mean they enjoy watching your affection. You and Luke are just a little too touchy, a little too sweet, especially after being aways from each other. They wouldn’t say anything about it, but they always look away cringing and staring at each other with a “Kill me please” look on their faces.

۫ ꣑ৎ Luke loves showing you off. She would let you speak for her during meetings or speeches, let you lead her missions purely because she knows how good you are and Luke would watch with a look full of love and adoration that would make every normal person want to puke.

۫ ꣑ৎ Everyone in the base has a betting pool on how long you two can go without physically touching. The record is under five minutes. Whether it’s her hand on your back, her arm slung across your shoulders during planning, or your fingers tangled in hers when no one’s looking—you two are practically glued together. It’s not even for show. It’s comfort.

۫ ꣑ৎ Whenever Luke is stressed she would drag you to your shared quarters and lay her head in your lap, letting you play with her hair as she rants about her frustrations to you. There would also often be days where she’s just quiet, just thinking as your hands run through her hair. Luke finds comfort in it.

۫ ꣑ৎ She would hold you every night before any major battle, kissing you as the two of you sat in silence, holding each other's hand. Luke wouldn’t admit it, but she’s terrified of losing you during a mission or in battle but she would never tell you, rather holding you as if you would break any second.

۫ ꣑ৎ After a successful mission and/or battle? You two would be inseparable. Luke would always have an arm around you, touching you as she kisses you, even being a bit sappy. Luke’s minions are on the verge of tears because they can’t simply run away from the sight, especially if there’s a meeting going on.

۫ ꣑ৎ It is very obvious how sickly in love the two of you are just from the way that the two of you look at each other and protect each other. Luke would do absolutely anything and everything for you, even willing to go against Kronos for you. Because she isn’t fighting this war just as a revenge towards the gods, but for you too.

Little rant incoming because my internet works again and I had a very long and unnecessary heated discussion with a few acquaintances in college of mine:

One of my favorite things about being a writer is seeing people praise my work and telling me how good my writing for the character is even though I don’t even care for the character (*cough* *cough* Gojo) that much or might not even be too fond of the Anime overall (I am entering a nuclear war zone now though I hope this isn’t Instagram but I am not too fond of One Piece at times either).

Something that I wish people online or even some of my acquaintances who also watch Anime would understand is that I’m not a hater. I am fully aware that there are always going to be people who just slander a beloved work simply because it is popular. But I’m not such a person. I am capable of talking about why people find Gojo appealing or why they love One Piece so much. I can just state clearly if I didn’t enjoy something either and that not even disrespectfully but as a fact that is true for only me.

One of the most popular arguments that I have recently heard when I’ve been mentioning that I don’t like One Piece as much as others want me to like it is the argument that Oda is one of the top-selling authors of all time. Nothing but respect for his dedication and hard work but that doesn’t mean anything. With that logic every author in this list of the top 10 should have their work worshipped yet I’m pretty sure Shakespeare or J.K Rowling’s Harry Potter isn’t universally beloved. Demon Slayer and Jujutsu Kaisen had some of the highest sales for a single volume yet I know plenty of people who hate it.

I am always down for a good and interesting discussion but nowadays it is just so hard for me to have that. People are somehow always biased and if I say I don’t simp for a character they drool over and adore or that I don’t like their favorite anime because it just wasn’t for me I would have done less damage if I would have just spit in their face.

I wouldn’t even be offended if you said that you didn’t like some of my favorite anime of all time because ultimately everything involving it is just an opinion. But don’t be as immature as to hate on it if you haven’t watched it simply because my opinion differs from yours. If people praise me because they believe my work is good and accurate that doesn’t mean that I am in love with a character or show. It just means that I put effort into my own posts because it is possible to dislike something and still understand its meaning.

I feel like l don’t even need to explain how this perfectly corresponds with how they’ve been hurt beyond words in the past and how they’re each other’s one good thing, the one thing in the world that makes them go “hey maybe life isn’t so shitty” even if it’s not meant to last forever, even if it’s supposed to come to an end when they get to the Eternal Library.

“One night may be forever, but that’s alright” Basically just going with what I said above about it being a temporary thing

“Just someone sweet passing by, an angel come to save me who didn't even know she gave me something to believe in, for even a day” It’s literally Hugo-coded you guys, trust. The lyrics show how he perceived Varian as just a random means to an end at the beginning of the journey but as they got to grow closer, Varian unknowingly gave Hugo a reason to believe that there is good in the world, that there are good people, and that people can change. Which are (in my opinion) some of the most important values Hugo learns that contribute to his character development.

And then obviously “I have something to believe in, now that I know you believed in me” sums everything up perfectly. Them believing in each other means everything. Varian placed his trust in Hugo, despite struggling with it immensely, which in turn flipped Hugo’s world upside down. Him placing that trust in Hugo- this delicate, vital thing that Varian has trouble with giving to anyone else- gave Hugo a reason to start to believe in good things. They became each other’s reason to trust again, to love again. And that’s because they were able to see each other’s flaws and love each other anyway. They quite literally gave each other something to believe in.

This was lowkey all over the place but I feel like I can’t properly put into words how much “you gave me something to believe in now that I know you believed in me” relates to them and how much this take means to me (I will die on this hill) which is probably why it’s not super articulate, but you guys get what I’m trying to say. Hopefully 😭

me when Lance and Keith’s connections with the blue and red lions gives them a BOND *wink* *wink* that connects to their growth as characters. me when Lance and Keith’s discovery of the blue lion mirror Keith’s parents. me when Keith’s initial closed off persona opened up after meeting Lance and lances initial need to be a great pilot like Keith grew into a talent of supporting his crew (including Keith) and developing a role in which he can support the team without trying to one up someone else’s talent (sharpshooter instead of pilot), which set both of them up for their roles as the leader and his right hand man.

SO. Let’s start at the beginning. Lance, in attempting to find the glory he’s been failing to achieve, directly piggybacks on Keith’s plan in order to save Shiro because he could not come up with a plan of his own. These characterizations allude to the fact that…

1. Lance is incompetent in everything he’s tried up to this point. His dreams of being a legendary fighter pilot are crumbling around him because he simply is not naturally talented in flying planes. Of course, he could practice and work hard to improve, which he does later in the series (which we’ll talk about later), but after he became a cargo pilot, he decided he had nothing to offer. Consequently, he began to put up an overconfident front, really the only thing he excelled in. Confidence. Even though he had achieved fighter class, his overcompensating confidence prevented him from making sound decisions and overall improving as a pilot. Lance doesn’t trust himself to make decisions in a situation as important as saving his hero, so he used Keith’s already established plan to involve himself as a savior of his hero.

2. According to Iverson, the only major authoritative figure in lances life at this point, Lance is only a fighter pilot because Keith, the best pilot, had a discipline issue. Lance knows Keith as an amazing pilot that got him where he wanted to be. While Lance would rather do anything but have to work with Keith to achieve the glory he so desperately desires, he knows that since Keith is not loved by the garrison, so Lance can take more credit for the rescue. In lances mind, he got him where he wanted once, he can do it again.

Later, we learn about Keith’s investigation of the blue lion. He’s been trying to find this thing for ages and you know who magically reveals clues Keith has never been able to access before? LANCE. He enters Keith’s life and changes EVERYTHING. Keith’s search for the blue lion gave him a sense of purpose after losing Shiro and the garrison. Just before Shiro returned he sort of hit rock bottom in terms of that investigation. When lances connection to the blue lion guided the paladins to the blue lion, Lance helped Keith discover something new, something he had never seen before. Keith had been living the past few months or even years without doing anything meaningful or developing any meaningful relationships with people his age or discovering anything new. Lance brought a spark into his life, allowing him to use his talents to explore the stretches of space and help others. Yes, the other paladins were there when they found the blue lion, but no one was as connected as Lance and Keith to each other and the blue lion. Pidge and Shiro were more involved with investigating/informing others about the galra, not the lions. Hunk did absolutely nothing (ironic considering his character was never developed in the show to the extent of the others and was fairly useless to the team, unfortunately - he deserved better). If I remember correctly, it was Allura who said that the connection Keith felt to the blue lion was present in order to bring the paladins together, or rather Lance to his lion. Quite literally, the magical connection from keith and Lance to the blue lion (an exact match to lances personality at the time) helped both of them to discover themselves and live happier lives that ultimately brought the team and sort of the universe together???

When Lance became the paladin of the red lion and keith became the paladin of the black lion, their official roles within the team accurately matched the personalities and unofficial roles that they had finally gained through their character development. Lances early journey centered around learning he didn’t have to be the best pilot in the galaxy, but instead could be a pretty good gunman and a major support pillar for the team emotionally and tactically. The journey mirrored his transition from the “confident and friendly” blue lion to the “instinctual and fiery” red lion. The blue lion, said by the dreamworks team to be the lion most accepting of its pilots, typically paladins who it/she see potential in and intend to nurture towards growth. While the red lions descriptions don’t necessarily match lances personality because the descriptions were written to match Keith, its paladin must earn the respect of the red lion in order to pilot it/her. Once he becomes the paladin of the blue lion, the confidence Lance had been parading about became more rooted in his actual skills as he finds himself useful to the team with his sharpshooting abilities. By the time he takes up the mantle of the red paladin, Lance has matured in personality and skill, allowing him to act on instinct and match the role of Keith’s right hand man (HIS INVISIBLE RIVALRY TURNED INTO ADMIRATION AND LOVE). His acts for the team and universe have proved him worthy to be the red paladin.

Keith’s struggle with accepting his new role as the black paladin was displayed much more overtly in the show. Scared of losing Shiro again and feeling unready to lead a team after a life of isolation and struggle with people, Keith was extremely skeptical about becoming the black paladin. His journey focused on learning to work with as well as lead others and develop meaningful connections with his teammates. While keith piloted the red lion, he didn’t need to work with anyone because of the sheer talent him and his lion exhibited in combat and flight. However, Shiro’s guidance in forming relationships with his teammates helped him to use his strengths to boost the team. When he became the black paladin, keith had to officially adopt the role he had unofficially grown into through the bonds he made with the paladins and the tactical knowledge he used to guide the team. The “unstable” red paladin of the beginning of the show accepted and understood the importance of adopting a major leadership position, despite his own insecurities and fears.

Lance and Keith’s shared connection to the blue and red lions, their connection to shiro, and their willingness to reveal their deepest values and emotions to each other have established them as having one of the most powerfully bonded relationships in the series. Lance and Keith have been through a lot, but despite it all, they have always been devastatingly, meaningfully, and compassionately intertwined, to the deepest internal themes of their characters and storylines.

I think the thing I am looking forward to MOST with Helluva Boss is when it’s Stolas’s turn to deal with his issues and we get the Stolas equivalent of a Blitzø Sucks party and all the ”But Stolas did bad things too! And he’s the worst for not acknowledging that” come to the realization that “Oh…they were getting to that bit of the ongoing story that is currently in progress and is nowhere near done and maybe if I had just waited and given them the benefit of the doubt I would have seen all the clues and indicators they dropped that this would be an upcoming character storyline. Looking back it was actually very obvious they had not just forgotten and brushed over it to make Stolas “look good””

But then of course we’ll still get the “HA, VivziePop must have seen how mad we got and added that in just to make Stolas look better and justify this dysfunctional relationship between *checks notes* an isolated Demon Prince and a traumatized Hell Born Imp In Literal Hell”

So maybe I’m not looking forward to it.

It’s not Polites’ fault that Odysseus reveals himself to the cyclops.

It’s not Polites’ fault that the cyclops chose violence (before y’all say anything yes the cyclops is rightfully pissed off but still it’s not Polites’ fault that he refused the deal and attacked them). Also y’all seem to forget that he helped in the fight against the cyclops, meaning he is most likely not open arms 24/7.

It’s not Polites’ fault that Odysseus and Eurylochus both kept making mistakes along the journey (like Odysseus more so explaining himself than apologizing and Eurylochus opening the bag or Odysseus sacrificing six men, etc).

While I do understand that Polites might not be a favorite of someone’s because his personality isn’t for anyone, I still don’t see why y’all blame him for everything. All he does is try to show Odysseus that they don’t always have to resort to violence. They don’t always have to have their guards up.

You say he’s stupid for this belief because he’s been at war for 10 years, yet you never stop to actually think that perhaps he’s just really tired of the bloodshed or that he was simply trying to cheer up his friend. This might be a shocker to some of y’all but you can be a warrior and still have a positive attitude and be optimistic.

Y’all will do everything except actually hold Odysseus accountable for his own faults.

The fact that we’re even at this point is a miracle in itself and needing every character to explicitly say their orientation and/or gender identity shows how ignorant you are, not just regarding media literacy, but also on queer history

By your myopic lens you’re discrediting a lot of queer characters that didn’t and/or couldn’t outright say that they’re queer

Characters shouldn’t have to outright say their orientation and/or gender identity for you to consider them “good rep”

That perspective is ridiculously narrow minded and downplays the importance of previous queer characters that helped pave the way to where we are now
