So, some theories about Coyote and/or Mephistopheles

Alright, I will throw my proverbial hat into the ring in terms of trying to come up with a theory about this. Because I am not exactly sold on the most popular theory right now that old man Coyote and/or Mephistopheles is a new manifestation of Death. The main reason for that is, that Coyote is a bit too important in regards to indigenous mythologies. So having Coyote be Death, who is a fairly one-note villain, would definitely feel quite a bit disrespectful.

Well, y'all know where you are. So of course we will talk about some history. Duh.

Mephistopheles

I think most of us will know that Mephistopheles originates with the Faustus myth. So let me talk shortly about Johann Georg Faust, who was a real person, who lived in Germany around the change from the 15th to the 16th century. (From all we know, he lived from 1466 to 1540, though the dates are not fully certain, as it often is the case with older dates.) Details about his life are really hard to construct, because he became such a popular character in fiction very shortly after his death, that it is just super hard to differentiate fiction from reality. We know, however, that he was an alchemist, astrologist and magician - whatever the latter is supposed to mean at the time. Later people also claimed he was a con man. From all we know (though again, this is not certain) he died by blowing himself up with an alchemical experiment, which definitely is on brand.

If it was just that, we would probably not really remember the guy. Sure, he might have a Wikipedia article still, but hist name would not be recognized by thousands if not millions of people. No, this happened because in 1587 a book was printed, called "Historia von D. Johann Fausten". We don't know the author, just the publisher (Johann Spies). And this story then caught the attention of the Englishman Christopher Marlowe, who made something of a rewrite and translation of it a few years later as the play "Doctor Faustus", which a long while later would then serve as inspiration for Goethe and his interpretation of the story.

The rough outline however is always the same: Faust is a theologist, who wants to acquire knowledge and finds himself limited by the at the time slow advance of science. A devil Mephistopheles shows up, who serves Lucifer, and offers Faust a lot of knowledge and magic in exchange for his soul. Faust accepts. Depending on which version you read, what follows is either tragedy or a lot of magic hijinks, though the moral of the story is always: "Do not be too greedy with knowledge."

Since we do not have any sources referencing Mephistopheles prior to the printing of the Historia, we are fairly certain that whoever wrote that book made Mephistopheles up. Meaning: This figure was not based in prior myths or historical believes. Or to put it differently: Mephistopheles goes back to 1587. He did not "exist" in the real world - not even as an idea - prior to this date.

After the Faust story got so popular, though, other stories definitely picked up on Mephistopheles and put him into a variety of other stories as a trickster demon, who would often seduce good men into doing back things - often with the goal of gaining power or knowledge or both.

Old Man Coyote

Meanwhile, Coyote is a character who shows up throughout indigenous North American mythology, and - as someone has rightfully pointed out - somewhat also in Nahua mythology (Nahua = Aztec, I am trying to use the endonym rather than the exonym).

See, in Nahua mythology there is a god called Huehuecoyotl, and as you might guess: Coyotl indeed means coyote. To be exact the name translates to "Old Coyote", which indeed is quite close to "Old Man Coyote". ;)

Huehuecoyotl is (according to Wikipedia, because I still have not found a good book on Nahua mythology - please, someone, recommend me something) the Nahua song of song, dance, mischief and also of uninhibited sexuality. Because of this, he was - like so many trickster gods - also technically genderfluid, as he could take whatever form he liked. He would often play tricks on other gods and on humans too, at times even cause wars. But like with other Coyote stories, these often would fall back on him.

Which brings me to all those other versions of Coyote.

While Coyote does not show up in every North American indigenous culture, he certainly shows up in many of them. The most well known Coyote myths are obviously of Navajo origin, bout the Navajo are not the only culture featuring Coyote.

Coyote is pretty much always a trickster, and like many tricksters he is generally a positive figure, but also morally grey. While in many myths he is responsible for some creations of the world, he will usually also often cause misery to others and also himself. He also often dies gruesome deaths, but finds then ways to come back from them.

In some myths he will also take up the role of a culture hero, meaning that he will be responsible for bringing the human certain things, like fire or language. Even as Coyote he does at times appear as a shapeshifter of sorts, though this is not always a given.

Coyote shows up in more than 20 different mythologies that we know off. While his general role as a trickster is often the same, the finer details will definitely differ a lot.

So, the Theory

So, the Spanish conquest of the Nahua happened in 1519. And we also know that in general around the turn of the century the genocide in the Americas was so bad that it possibly created a fucking climate change! (It got colder because so much CO2 got sucked from the atmosphere.)

And so my suspicion here is, that Coyote, the trickster (I am not fully sure if it is specifically Huehuecoyotl, or a generic Coyote), went over to Europe after the indigenous cultures were genocided, to exact revenge. And when he went over to Europe, he took up an identity that worked better with the believes of the people in Europe: Mephistopheles.

He might also have taken some other identities in some other cultures.

The reason I do not really think it is Death (even though timeline wise it could obviously also match up, given that the entire Faust thing mainly happened just after the events of the first four seasons) is really that Death was a very one-note villain. And it just would not feel right to me to make Coyote - who is definitely not one-note - as Death.

Adam sighed and petted Verosika's hand: No, it's okay... I'll see her.

Adam stood outside his dressing room door. He was beyond pissed off. And scared. How dare Charlie think she can just invade his space and wait for him. Like some hunter.

Opening the door, Adam couldn't help but glare at her- and glare harder at Vaggie. Because of cause the princess couldn't leave the hotel without her guard dog.

He's never felt much anger towards Charlie, but now? Since everything that had gone down with Lucifer? Yeah, no. Fuck her. It was her fault.

Adam: Oh look. Two lesbos invading my personal space. Again. And I'm not even being paid this time.

Adam walked past the girls and sat down at his makeup table, spinning his chair around to face them. He did his best to look unbothered, but judging by the way Charlie flinched and looked down, he wasn't doing very well.

Vaggie: You're lucky we paid you the first time.

Adam glared: Sorry. I don't talk to dogs. And in fact, their not allowed in the dressing rooms. They shit everywhere.

He smirked as Vaggie growled: Watch yourself mouth, whore-!

Adam: See, there it goes. Shitting. Either treat me with respect, or get the fuck out! I'm done dealing with assholes who think they can treat me anyway they fucking want.

Charlie: Adam- I swear, that isn't what we're doing-.

Adam: Really? Before you showed up, I only had one freak to worry about, but all of a sudden, I got attacked by some short asshole, who THEN came to my fucking house- the only safe place I had, and tried to fuck me! So, I don't care what you're doing. You're lucky I'm even agreeing to speak eith you.

Vaggie: Not like you get a choice, she is the princess-.

Adam: I don't give a shit who she is. So, hurry up. The fuck are you hear for?

Vaggie: Ad-.

Adam: I wasn't speaking to you. Or are you Charlie's voice as well? Little princess can't speak for herself now?

Charlie: I can. Sorry, Adam. I uh... I'm here to see you about... dad-.

Adam: Ha! Nope. I have a restraining order on him for a fucking reason. Let me guess, the short king depressed because he didn't get his way? Typical.

Charlie: Adam- please. He's... broken.

Adam: Good. No one gave a shit when I was fucking hurting! Why do I have to put down everything and stop my life, to comfort people who didn't give a shit about me?! You don't even know the shit I've fucking been through, not only in Hell, but Heaven and Eden as well!

Adam folded his arms: Short king finally got a taste of his own medicine? Fucking good. Don't bother me about it.

Charlie: He loves you, Adam!

Adam: Yeah? And I loved him in Eden. He didn't care, in fact he fucking laughed at me! Both if you shit hole parents did. So, fuck. Him. And not in the good way.

Charlie sighed, only smiling when Vaggie rubbed her back. She had no idea how to convince Adam.

The roaring of the crowd and the playing of his guitar deafened his ears but the incubus didn't care. He loved the way they cheered his name while he shredded on his axe. With one final strum, his song was done. He raised his arms and gave the horns, to which his fans reciprocated, and bid them all goodnight. He walked away his hands still raised until he was out of sight from them. Adam sighed heavily and wiped the sweat with his forearm as he made his way to his dressing room.

Once there he flopped onto the couch and groaned. Though Adam loved being a rockstar and having adoring fans, he wouldn't lie to himself, each performance, especially concerts, can be quite draining since he always had to prepare with mic checks and making sure he sounded right. Steve, his producer/manager/on-and-off-again fling, always assured him that these were mandatory. Just one of those sacrifices that come with being a star. Still, Adam felt a little like shit and he needed a drink, a hard one. Unfortunately, his evening wasn't quite over yet as knocking was heard from the other side of the door then a voice called out.

Assistant: Excuse me? Commander? I'm sorry for bothering you but I brought the VIP guests here with me.

Adam sighed completely forgetting about that. Almost all VIPs get access to meet him after every show. Though he loved his fans coming to him and saying how much they loved him, maybe even getting some head from the older crowd, tonight, he didn't want to. However, he knew that he didn't have much of a choice. Unless he wanted Steve up his ass, and not in a good way. Letting out a long groan he sat up, rubbed his eyes, and yelled out to her.

Adam: Bring them in.

He closed his eyes and sighed once again as he heard the door open and feet shuffle in. He prepared himself for the immediate responses of squealing and clamoring over to shake his hand. However, he was not prepared for a familiar voice to call out his name.

Charlie: A, Adam?

He opened his eyes and standing in front of him were Charlie, Vaggie, and a one-eyed sinner.

I realised how underdeveloped Dorcas is as a character and she's the loml so I came up with a few (a lot) headcanons for her

I personally headcanon her as being academic rivals with Lily and Quidditch rivals with Marlene but somehow best friends with Mary which started out because they were the only two black girls in their year and bonded over the racism and braiding each other's hair. Imo she'd have stuck to the skittles even after most of them took the Mark but then they did something she couldn't forgive (maybe to Mary's family or smth) and that's when she decided to join the Order instead of staying neutral like Pandora. She probably wanted to go into Wizarding Law or experimentation, maybe in Arithmancy or Runes. I think she was a half blood (her mother was a witch, her dad was a squib maybe) but raised in a Muggle community so her first interaction with magic outside her family was on the train with Pandora and Evan. I hc her as only child living in a joint family with three or four cousins, both younger and older but if she had a sibling, it would be a younger sister. I don't think she ever forgave Sirius even in any timeline where he and Reg reconciled because while she understood that he had valid reasons for leaving, she couldn't relate because she'd never do the same to her cousins or siblings. She masterminded every prank or plan the skittles had but no one ever thought she was involved because the teachers loved her. She would definitely be popular because she argued a lot with blood supremacist or racists or even just guys in general to defend people. She was the one who showed Reg, Barty and Evan how wrong their racist, homophobic blood supremacist families were. I think she'd be very open about her queerness and her heritage too. The only reason she never became Head Girl was because of Dumbledore's blatant favouritism of Gryffindors, even McGonagall wanted her to be the Head Girl.

She had blackmail on every single person at Hogwarts and used that to get into the Slytherin Quidditch team after they refused to let her try out because she was a girl. She and Emma Vanity became the first girls on the Slytherin Quidditch team since Eileen Prince. Thought she was ace until Emma who was her first proper crush and they became fwb but broke it off after Emmeline came into the picture. She dated both Reg and Evan while they were closeted and being pressured by their parents to date someone "suitable". She became good friends with Emmeline and Lily during a group project in either Runes or Arithmancy. This forced her and Marlene into such close proximity that they were forced to acknowledge their feelings for each other and eventually started dating after flirting with each other. If you ship Dorlily then the confession happened after one of them hit the other with a stronger spell than they were supposed to be using during DADA and they ended up being hurt. She definitely had to listen to Pandora/Mary pining about Lily before they got together. She and Remus became friends after she deduced that he was a werewolf in third year and started researching on Wolfsbane for him. Barty ran away to her house instead of Reg's or Evan's. She, Barty and Evan blew up a lot of shit because of their experimentation. She and Reg read a lot of Muggle literature which she introduced to him and frequently had debates about it. Muggle literature was one of the things that finally got through to Regulus and showed him how wrong blood supremacy was. Dorcas took Divination to understand Pandora better despite thinking that the subject was bullshit. She defended all of the skittles because people kept taunting them. She was the one who taught Barty, Evan and Pandora how to fight the "Muggle way". She was Mary's gay awakening but Mary never had an actual crush on her. She was definitely a hatstall between Slytherin and Ravenclaw.

wow, I love how detailed your version of Dorcas is....I feel like a lot of people struggle to characterize her, so this is really cool to read! I love the idea of her being friends with people from so many houses, too.

- race like… is a little bitch. but not in the 1899 15/16 year old boy way, but rather the 2024 15/16 year old boy who makes so many morally incorrect jokes but he actually makes them funny

- going off of that he completely RUINS the humor of all of the others (namely crutchie)

- speaking of crutchie. i believe he gets heavily involved in online discourse surrounding human rights, and whenever he is literally done with the person he adds a “:)” at the end of his statements to psyche them out.

- jack does art commissions, but ONLY for his friends. although he silently judges some requests and just avoids them like the plague until they forget about it

- davey has an astigmatism so he technically doesn’t need to wear glasses all the time because he can still see, but whenever jack wants to show him a drawing on his tablet he stops jack and SEARCHES for those glasses like they could save the world so he could see the drawing without little lines from the light

- katherine is a decorated writer, but she’s very disturbed by the concept of young adult books and booktok and will advocate viciously against them inside of comment sections

- romeo and race share a journal of quotes featuring the groups worst moments… some seem HORRID out of context such as :

- nobody knew kath until davey met her through debate team. she was the only one with a solid line of reasoning on the other side and in that moment david felt nothing but respect towards her and forced her to join the group.

- speaking of teams- albert and crutchie do robotics!

- albert bought a tattoo gun specifically for jack to tattoo a hyper realistic watch onto his wrist. now every time somebody asks him the time he tries to gaslight the fuck out of them.

- this is my personal favorite atm- spot has picked at the scabs from bug bites on his arms since he was a child, which left him with a bunch of tiny scarred dots across his arms… which is why his nickname is spot.

I don’t always agree with some things written or said about a character, especially regarding Sylus. But I also don’t attack people in the tags for everyone to see for perceiving a character or storyline how they do.

It’s too easy to continue past something you disagree with instead of writing a dissertation about why you dislike it and tagging it with popular tags to rage bait.

all of my opinions are popular opinions i have no original thoughts ever unfortunately. ummmmm maybe that I find people's interpretations of kouyou to be very shallow and black/white-ish and too heavily rooted in fanon content. from what I've seen a lot of people subscribe to: 'oh her design is similar to an oiran's so it's implied she handles the mafia's sex workers and so she must be grooming kyouka' all while her obi being in the front also symbolizes being a widow ( and we know she's been in mourning over her lover being killed ) and her desire to protect kyouka from those feelings is misguided but genuine idk idk i'd need more time to put my thoughts together but tldr i feel like it's always either 'girlboss!mom!' or 'evil woman who is just as bad as mori for reasons i won't specify' and both are fine it's just character interpretation but i don't feel that way about her ( i see her as a selfish, paranoid yes, but a deeply hurt and flawed woman who needs the opportunity to do *good* for someone <- and she does by getting kyouka's papers from the Special Divison transport vehicle ) and it's hard to articulate it.

my notes:

my overall interpretation of this song is "I'm trying to break through the friend zone (friendship barrier) so that you like me instead of thinking of me as a friend", so any vagueness in translation went in that direction

The use of "lock horns" in the official translation snippet + the HAO motifs give me the mental image of like, a hand-to-hand kung fu battle, so I leaned towards that imagery whenever there was vagueness (as opposed to like, a military campaign, for example)

deco's official english translations tend to be very liberal, so i tried to keep my translation a little more literal

I'm going to preface this story by saying: I don't necessarily believe in karma, but

I may have been walking through today with a vague sense of disbelief tainted with unkind smugness after my tiktok fyp was flooded with poor fans who tried to get presale ticket to one mr n. kahan's new tour only to find that demand was through the roof and GA pit tickets were seriously going for $300, in presale, and even the "worst" tickets in the lawn were going for $70

and while I undoubtedly think it's deeply unethical for both platforms (thanks ticketmaster) and artists to allow such dramatic ticket cost inflation, I also generally don't relate...

I (VERY LUCKILY) gravitate towards smaller acts, and the most I've paid for a ticket all year has been, like... $90 for a ticket to beyonce, which got cancelled and I was refunded lol. if I look back at all my receipts from shows this year, most have been around $50/ticket after fees, and several have been closer to $20. my favorite show I've seen all year was a $15 ticket.

it's mostly luck—I tend to like smaller acts, and I've been seeing mainly rock acts this year, and those tickets simply don't run as high as pop acts. and part of me is honestly very grateful that I haven't been swept into any of the really recent huge acts.

I think of all the people scrabbling for boygenius or taylor swift tickets and how much money they've had to shell out... how a lot of them don't even GET to see the acts they want to see because they've been priced out or tickets sold out. I can't remember the last time a show I wanted to go to sold out lol. maybe bastille in london?

and again, it's just a matter of luck that I'm not really into any of these megastars and therefore don't have to compete in the gladiator arena to try to see shows I want to see, but sometimes luck manifests as a feeling of self-satisfaction, you know? who among us hasn't experienced a little self-superiority from time to time.

look, if YOUR tiktok was flooded with people saying concerts have been awful since 2021 (including rock and metal shows), but every concert YOU'VE been to since 2021 was amazing and the crowds were really good and you always got tickets and it never broke the bank, you'd feel pretty validated in your choice of musicians and the crowds they attract too, alright?? sue me! I felt frugal AND undeservedly clever!
