Idk why but right now I'm thinking about when Rumi used their command spell on Exandroth, and thinking about the way it makes my skin crawl. I know why Rumi is using it, I know why it's warranted, but still, Exandroth at multiple points does just leave Peter alone and agrees of its own volition to go away when asked. Like from inside the text, the act makes sense, but from the outside it is uncomfortable to see Rumi turn around and not even hesitate to make Exandroth go away by force. It's not even just the force though I don't think, I think it's the act of taking away Exandroth's own autonomy, the specific spell that Rumi uses, that's what makes me uncomfortable.

I just think the existence of a command spell is fucked up and evil and the fact it can be used in incredibly fucked up ways (which it was during the campaign) makes ME feel fucked up.

-Overall characterized as pretty awkward, the kid first introduces himself by listing his flaws (including “I’m very nearsighted” among them, the silly, that’s a neutral trait!) and then saying he wished they could be friends when he literally just saved people that called him over there telepathically with the phrase “friend we never met” in there! Almost like he was rattling off a memorized script in a way and I say this in the most awww look how hard he’s trying way possible. He’s pretty implied to be nocturnal as he works during the night and his specialty is fixing busted technology. He’s very good at it too! Am I the asshole for trying to murder the guy that killed himself and I?? 4. where it hurts.

Peter should have fallen asleep hours ago. He was exhausted, but he couldn't drift off for more then a few seconds. He stared up at the blank sky, he wished there were still stars.

Fuck, everything hurts.

It wasn't even a big fight, they just got ambushed by a group of blights, it should have been nothing. Exandroth just had to show off, though. Now Peter had to deal with the constant feeling of his skin being on fire, and the dull ache from the scars where eyes had opened and shut. His feet were all blistered from walking too, just his luck.

Trying not to cry from sheer frustration, he turned on his side to face the rest of camp. Thanatos was shut off, resting. Lizard and Sunny slept in a little pile near the fire, the little fox stirred and yipped quietly, dreaming something Peter could never understand. Rumi was keeping watch, polishing her harpblade until in shone in the firelight just like her eyes did. Peter found himself entranced by the soft curve of their smile, the way their hair perfectly framed their face. Rumi was more what Peter had expected angels to look like before Exandroth showed up, divine and ethereal in his beauty. A painting worked on for decades until it was perfected, a statue carved by the greatest sculptor in the world, a magnum opus.

Their eyes drifted up to meet his, and in a burst of golden sparks the blade disappeared and Rumi looked at Peter the way she always did, like he was the most important person in her life.

It scared Peter sometimes, when he looked at him like that. He doesn't know if he had ever been someone's favorite person before. What if he was reading into it all wrong, what if he wasn't special to Rumi at all, what if he was just as much a nobody to them as everyone else.

Then Rumi smiled at him, and all his doubts melted away.

"Couldn't sleep?" He asked. When Peter nodded in response she pat the space on the fallen log next to her.

"Sit then, its awfully quiet out here, I could use the company."

Peter obliged and leaned his head on Rumi's shoulder, they were so warm...

"So is there any reason you're still up?" They murmured, softly as to not wake the animals.

"Exandroth was just an asshole today." He answered, his voice muffled in the folds of Rumi's cloak. "Can't sleep cus it hurts too much."

Rumi frowned and turned Peter's face towards him. "Why didn't you tell me? Look- here." He placed a hand on Peter's chest and he shuddered as the shimmer of magic spread through his body, it had to feel like being swallowed by starlight. When it dissipated, he felt a little better.

"T-thanks," He stammered, "I guess I just didn't want to bother you, you know?"

"You could never bother me, Peter." She whispered, taking his hand and examining the palm. An angry red line blazed across the center, still oozing a substance that looked like liquified light. Exandroth only ever opened eyes on his palms to mess with him.

"I wish he treated you better." Rumi lamented, closing Peter's hand around the scar and placing a gentle kiss on his knuckles. A flurry of butterflies were set free in his stomach. He hoped they didn't notice how much he was blushing.

"If you ever need anything from me," He continued, "No matter how trivial it seems, let me know, alright? I'm here for you, always."

"Always?" He repeated, "But what if-"

Rumi brushed his bangs away from his eyes and that shut him up pretty quick.

"I will be here as long as you need me to." They said with such finality and devotion Peter didn't think he ever believed anything less, "Now get some sleep, we have a long day of travel ahead of us."

The harpblade reappeared in her hands and she plucked out a few notes. "I will wake you once it is time to set off again."

Peter nodded and laid back down, on the other side of the fire this time, closer to the person softly singing an old ballad to fill the quiet. When he closed his eyes, for the first time in what felt like an eternity his dreams were pleasant.

The Sun, the Stars, the Moon: Apotheosis and Its Sky

Peter missed the sun.

Back when he had a job, he'd wake every morning, greet Lizard, and feel the sun's warm rays rising as he walked to work. In the evening, he'd exit the stone-sorting building, and watch the sun set through his own apartment windows, Lizard by his side.

When Prevarus' sky was plunged into inky darkness, that all disappeared. Now, with the sky gone, so was his earlier routine. Now, he woke in the dark, greeted Lizard and Rumi and Thanatos, and they would begin traveling. Some time after wandering through woods and streams and valleys, they would become too exhausted to walk further. That, or Peter would stumble a few too many times, or Thanatos would start shutting down.

And so Peter would sit down, wish Lizard and Rumi and Thanatos a good night, and promptly fall asleep. Gone were sunrises and sunsets. Now, cold wind and darkness surrounded him.

It was just so cold, too. With the sun gone, wind whipped faster, and temperatures had significantly dropped. Ludite or some other strange magic kept Prevarus from freezing over, but some moments got uncomfortably close to it.

Peter had managed to keep his old travelling cloak from his possessions in Raans, but he hadn't salvaged much else. Before he met Rumi and Thanatos, he'd scavenged a tattered coat with a furred hood and sleeves. Despite the mud it was caked in and the various rips all over it, Peter felt it'd served him well.

Even with the coat, though, Peter couldn't hide his frustration. His routine job was no longer a constant, and he was close to freezing on the daily. He endlessly shivered, and his teeth never stopped chattering. The closest he had felt to the warmth of sun's rays in the past few months had been the piercing, burning power of Exandroth merging with his body.

Rumi and Thanatos notice, because of course they do. At first, Rumi takes every opportunity to bundle Peter up in his cloak, and stays close to him to provide some companionship. The coat helps with the wind and Rumi's presence definitely warms Peter's cheeks, but Thanatos… Thanatos takes more direct action.

Thanatos hunts. Every bear, every fox, most mammals they come across, there is a very good chance Thanatos jumps on it. He skins the bodies for pelts every night until he shuts down, until Peter is buried in mounds of patchwork furs. At some point, Thanatos takes Peter's coat from him. Ignoring his protests, and using a sewing kit Peter recognizes as definitely Rumi's, Thanatos sets to work sewing pelts into the inner layers and repairing the tears. When it's done, the warmth in Peter's chest is more than just from the coat.

He sobs uncontrollably, managing to hug Thanatos through the tears. And as Thanatos pats him surprisingly gently on the back, Peter feels as though the sun may not have entirely disappeared.

He sets to work painting stones, and soon Thanatos' pouch is full of painted rocks equal in number to the furs Peter was buried in. Thanatos pockets every rock gently, with surprising precision, as if each one is a fragile piece of glass.

As well as Rumi hides it, they find a different part of the sky to miss, Peter discovers.

"I wish we still had the stars." Rumi says one night. It's quiet, and she tells it like a forbidden secret, a rare moment of openness. She's leaning against a tree, watching a small fire Thanatos built for them. All three are sitting around it. "My coat just mimics constellations, but I miss the real ones. The moon, too. She was a comfort." A moment of consideration. "Did you ever have favorite constellations, Peter?"

Peter thinks deeply before answering. "There was one I found… it looked sort of like Lizard. I used to try to show him it every night, but he, uh, wouldn't really look up. It was alright though. I knew he knew."

As if to prove a point, Lizard looks up from Peter's bag and curls up at his side.

"I once had fond memories of the stars. They were considered a welcome sight where I was raised." Thanatos' eyes flash. "They used to say it was the gods' many eyes watching us. If that was true, I am glad to see them gone."

"I think they were ludite. When the sky turned all dark, the stars rained down… as ludite. And we got magic." Peter reasons.

Rumi considers this. "I used to think of them as light from a place even above the gods. If the stars were the gods, ludite may have been the only good thing they did."

"The only good thing a god could do is die." Thanatos says. From him, like so many of his conversations, it is stated as fact first, opinion second.

Exandroth surges in Peter's brain, and he barely holds him back from takeover. He manages a nod instead.

"Right you are, Thanatos." Rumi leans back up against the tree, arms behind her head.

Peter turns to her. "We'll see the stars again. I believe in us." It's earnest, almost necessarily so - they have to cling to something out in these woods.

"Thank you, Peter. That is a comfort to hear." Rumi smiles softly. "I'll take first watch."

"Thanks. Goodnight, Rumi. Goodnight Thanatos." Peter says.

"Goodnight." Thanatos rumbles.

"Sleep tight, Peter, Thanatos." Rumi nods at them each, and turns to rest his sword on his lap.

And the quiet moment passes, and their travel continues.

A few more periods of darkness later, Peter musters up the courage to ask Thanatos his own feelings about the sun. The question was already posed to Rumi, who gave a story of an adventurer in a desert and not much else - but Peter's curious about what Thanatos thinks.

He can practically hear gears turn inside Thanatos' skull as he mulls over the question. Peter waits.

After due consideration, Thanatos answers him. "Peter, one of the greatest crimes of the gods is stealing our sun. That is not an item anyone can or should possess. The grief that it has caused you is understandable."

"Oh. Thank you."

"We have talked often of the sky," He continues. "I do have fond memories of it, also. Particularly of the moon. She was a constant, even when I couldn't see her. She is the closest thing to a god I could now think to appreciate." Thanatos tilts his head, examining Peter. "Why do you ask?"

Peter smiles up at him, and makes a mental note to paint another rock with a moon. "I was mostly curious. The sun and the sky have a lot of meaning to people, so I wanted to ask you too. I hope we'll get to see it return together, Thanatos."

He nods. "I hold this hope as well."

Conversations about the sky's predicament and history move on, and apart from those two rare moments, Thanatos and Rumi don't let on much more.

But when Zuen is defeated, Peter adds Thanatos' memory to the stars. Rumi adds a mark for him on the moon. And when a new day arrives, Peter can't help but think of Thanatos when the sun's rays refract across the clouds.

Far away, a metal man looks up from his book and begins to paint a sunrise on a stone wall.

tide is a seawing (also named tide). wavelength and ashe are skywings or icewings (idk what mark would be called but ashe just loses the e).

apotheosis

rumi: a rainwing who’s been receiving visions for some reason. the sword of the holy grail is some kind of animus-touched object. idk what their name would be though. maybe miracle?

peter sqloint: the saddest most pathetic rainwing/mudwing hybrid you ever did see. got unlucky and got the abilities of neither of his parents, so he can’t breathe fire or spit venom or hold his breath very long and his scales only change color subtly in a few spots and it’s entirely involuntary and based on emotion. also just very small, runt of his family. named pebble (i also had the idea to call him splat but that might have been a bit much)

thanatos: a huuuge nightwing with no nightwing powers but enough fire and rage to make up for it. lost his memory for some reason and lived in the kingdom of sand for a long time. called godslayer or something sick like that.

the gods and exandroth are like old evil dragon spirits or something idk. exandroth was a firescales. maybe the gods were animus dragons idk though.

the 3 are just kinda going around trying to kill all the queens i think who have been possessed by the whatever the gods are.

alr I don’t have a whole lot of ideas for it yet, but so far I’ve got

Peter is just a normal guy (maybe a minerology student? I also thought about him working at a place that deals with stone like floor n decor simply because I hate the place) that gets turned and used by Exandroth.

Exandroth is his sire. (Someone else said this and I’m stealing it <3)

He and Rumi are blood bonded <333 (insert that one drawing I did here)

Rumi is just one of the many characters Elena has undertaken over the course of their long life. They visit the Weylin twins semi frequently to change up their appearance and no long remember what Elena used to look like.

I’m thinking Thanatos is a former Grimslayer, but I don’t have a lot of ideas for him. He’s a vampire question mark? He got turned? Or already was turned??

If we do end up getting a reunion between these babies I only hope that we either see Rumi genuinely emote instead of doing their normal ahaha im perfect look at me shine- (they deserve to emote more and stop hiding behind perfection-)

OR yk those overly emotional run ups people do when they see their partenr get off a plane for the first time in like ages? They just make eye contact with their partner and everything is slowmotion, they start sobbing and they meet, one of em picks up the other and spins them? Just Rumi spinning Peter (or from how strong our boy has gotten possibly other way round), Peter's just rambling about what happened, Rumi's just staring at him with so much love and adoration,, Angelstone have their cute lil moment and it just cuts to Thanny not knowing how to approach Peter. He even maybe like backs up a lil with Peter comes towards him before lobbing himself at Thanatos and hugging him,, Thanatos does his gentle lil pat hes done before and just apologises- he isnt really sure how Peter can hug him after what he's done, but Peter explains how he's already forgiven Thanny, and that he knows he didnt really do it, he wasnt in his right mind,,

For like the next week, Peter is treated like an absolute gem, he's picked up by Thanatos and put onto his shoulders if he even looks tired, or Rumi just scoops him up and carries him without a word,, Thanatos does his whole intimidation act the second someone breathes aggressively in Peters direction, Rumi just stands there with their magic crackling at their hands,, All the while Peter is just standing behind em like,, guys i killed Exandroth pls- im good- did i tell you about this cool new rock i found-

I don't feel like I properly articulate this, but I think the thing that really gets to me is that the God Slayers get a lot of praise for being heroes, but if you believe that the world was made better via the overthrowing of the Gods and the end of the greater cycle of Gods- Exandroth MADE that happen. Zuen could not have cared less, but Exandroth consciously made a choice with a great cost in order to put the world in a position where it could BE revolutionised. Rumi, Thanatos, and Peter have this conflict imposed on them by circumstance, but Exandroth CHOSE this. Do you get what I mean? Rumi is there because of visions, Thanatos because of betrayal, Peter because of obligation.. But Exandroth is the singular character who wants for the sake of WANTING, for the sake of its OWN conviction to overthrow the Gods and to change the world.

And sure, maybe Exandroth wanted to be God, wanted power, but that's because Exandroth thought ITS ideals were what was going to make the world better. Its driving ideology was its sense of retribution.. It BELIEVED the Gods were doing WRONG and thus DESERVED retribution, it BELIEVED that there was a great injustice happening that NEEDED righting. Exandroth is the "archangel of justice and retribution", and even if its a fucked up and skewed version of it, Exandroth still put EVERYTHING on the line to do what it thought was right.

And like!! Exandroth doesn't CLAIM to be an ally to humanity, but holy SHIT Exandroth literally helped give humanity the technology to KILL celestials, and the fall of the celestial realm resulted in people gaining access to ludite!! Exandroth fucking helped give humanity AUTONOMY.. And the means were certainly fucked up!! No doubt about it!! But Exandroth did something that nobody had done before it and was willing to pay the price for it because it thought it was the right thing to do!!

And to be clear, the price of all this was: Exandroth's entire culture being wiped out, Exandroth's home being destroyed, letting itself become ostracised, Exandroth's Gods being slain, Exandroth suffering imprisonment, Exandroth giving up its body (if we are to assume Exandroth, like the Gods, had to inhabit a vessel in order to exist outside the celestial realm), Exandroth risking its life in battle and Exandroth actually DYING at the end of Apotheosis.. And sure, maybe none of this meant anything to Exandroth, maybe she couldnt care less, maybe it DID only want power, but that's still a LOT.

So maybe this post will convey why (on top of the other potentially interesting things about him) I find it TORTUROUS that the fandom will just have nothing to say about Exandroth and flatten its character to a pretty basic interpretation when it has such STRONG motivations and has made decisions SO HUGE it created the plot of Apotheosis. I NEED to know scientifically why people black out whenever it comes to Exandroth because making posts like this makes me feel like I'm insane even when I'm just stating what is in the plot of Apotheosis.

I read back through the notes and I feel like you guys may have overreacted with the pile on response?? It's okay if anon misinterprets or misses things on a FIRST watch through - especially if their attention had been split if they were doing something else while listening - because most people need time to REFLECT on a piece of media before they start being able to draw important connections. I myself wasn't MAGICALLY bestowed with a perfect interpretation of the text: I had to reflect on it, watch it over, and engage in discussions to get a better picture. In fact, I STILL find new things I missed when I rewatch it now, because that's just what engaging with a piece of media is like.

I understand your feelings completely (I'm sick of bad interpretations online too!), but these reactions were SO extreme I had to look through the reblogs off my account to see if there was some mysterious, hidden response that I was missing the context of.. But no!! You guys just projected your general frustrations about media illiteracy on some random anon who wanted to talk about how they're feeling!!

Imagine if you were going through your first watch of Apotheosis, wanted to offer a liveblog of your thoughts, and THIS is the backlash you get from other fans for just speaking your mind:

I feel like I'm being too harsh on you guys, and I don't want to upset you because some of you are my mutuals, but I would personally find this response so damaging and degrading!

Also!! It's not a crime to just find a character annoying?? Rumi is a favourite character of mine but what I like in a character isn't what everyone likes in a character, you know?

BUT ABOUT RUMI...

I'm not going to say anything about the character because I don't want to assume anon can't come to their own conclusions about that. But instead I want to point out something that everyone seemed to miss, which is the point:

If you feel characters are missing character development throughout the campaign, that is NOT a mistake of the campaign, Apotheosis is just a different kind of story. You are NOT meant to find the 'heroes' noble, you are NOT meant to see them develop, you are NOT here for a feel good story- Apotheosis was BUILT to be a tragedy. It's a tragedy with the most dramatic twist of fate, something that should have sealed its fate ending up the gateway for love to prevail. You are being pulled on a journey you KNOW the horrible destination of, but then the story subverts your expectations.

If you listen to the Rolleds, it's interesting to hear the players all say in their own words that they don't think their characters are capable of getting better. Bizly, Grizzly, and Charlie all say they don't think Thanatos, Rumi, or Exandroth respectively have the capacity to change. Hell, Peter says about himself that he can't do what the others do, and Charlie notes that Peter won't change unless there was something to prove he could be more than what he felt he was.

Apotheosis is a campaign you have to watch in full if you want to see characters development, because it's only with certain plot points (some quite far in I should add) that the world views of these characters is seriously challenged and they stop dwelling in their ego long enough to change.

BUT I DO WANNA POINT OUT..

Episode 10 has a really integral point in Rumi's character development where they apologise to Exandroth, which is sooo fucking important. There was also the scene where Rumi returns to the room they got the blade in an earlier episode!! Which I'm not going into the details of either, because I've been typing this point for a while, and I'm avoiding spoilers, but go rewatch everything from the point where they arrive at Ranz and episode 10!! (these are like my favourite episodes btw lol)

So yes, I do think anon was missing some crucial points that point to changes in Rumi's character, but that's the main issue I have with this ask. I don't think you guys were being very cool when you called them media illiterate. Anon, I doubt you're gonna see this, but I hope you're doing well and you might find this analysis to be interesting or more relevant to your ask.

I'm never not obsessed with Rumi trying to confront Exandroth. When Exandroth is all 🥺 asking what its done to not earn Rumi's trust and then gets distracted MID-SENTENCE by a squirrel and incinerates it. Exandroth has stock evil dialogue talking about how Rumi is weak for not trusting it. And then she just PEACES OUT after saying vaguely, "BALL BITCH, WORD" when asked about what it'll do when the Gods are dead.

I do understand people who think Exandroth is being manipulative, but to me that is Exandroth doing the worst job at communicating anything ever. Like the fact Exandroth later clarifies it was being an ass because Rumi started it is insane levels of miscommunication that I can't see Exandroth's behaviour as being anything other than evil autism.

Such unfathomable heights of the most bizarre behaviour, I can't get over it. Exandroth could have just said "Rumi, you're being a bad team player," and instead it goes off on a spiel like "Thanatos doesn't share this weakness," GIRL WHATTT.....

Maybe I'll make a clip of it and share it just so you can watch it if you haven't experienced it because OH MY GODD IT'S SO... IT'S SO WILDD..... Why did it do that.....
