Concept for this au-

Instead of being found by watch and becoming a prime defender, post-mortem William is taken under Mal’s wing as his protégé and taught to harness his Wisperer powers. Mal manages to gain his trust, partially because their first meeting is under far better circumstances, and partially by imitating David’s mannerisms to play to William’s desire for his older brother’s approval. 

William gradually realized that Mal was a terrible person who had been manipulating and using him. With the help of the wisps as well as several other spirits who he covertly freed from Mal’s control, he manages to kill Mal and take his place as the spirit world’s ruler.

Ashe had a habit of summoning spirits to keep her company, because she was confined to her room and unable to go out in the world and make friends she could hang out with. Seeing how suffocated and miserable she is in confinement, the ice fairy suggests to Ashe that she explore the spirit world while Mark is away.

She meets William, and they bond quickly. Both of them are isolated and deprived of meaningful connection with their peers, both of them are terrified of the fact they wield an otherworldly power that they believe is unfit for their hands. 

In this AU, spending prolonged amounts of time in the spirit world has a severe negative impact on the health of the living. So William offers Ashe fruit from the spirit world, which will bind her to it, allowing her to stay with him safely.
