by the way i kinda want to talk about the whole "christians arent oppressed" and "oooh christians wanna be oppressed so bad" stuff because i do feel strongly about it because of how much history it ignores lmfao ...because, yes. but actually no. Long ago, the Romans... actually did not like Christianity! Oh no. They despised them, especially Nero, who hated them so much he called for their execution. Eventually though Rome decided "actually yeah Christianity is cool". And that's not all!
Christians, especially Jehovah's Witnesses, weren't safe during WW2 neither! Oh no. Jehovah's Witnesses, while not persecuted as badly as Jewish folks, were still targeted and faced discrimination by the Nazis. And many were also unlucky enough to end up in concentration camps as well. Not to mention the fact that Christians are currently being targeted in other countries, such as North Korea. Oh yeah! Don't think America's getting out of this one neither! Black Christians especially aren't safe. In 2015, a black church in Charleston, South Carolina (particularly Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal) was shot up, killing 9 African Americans, including state senator Clementa C. Pinckney. And going further back in 1963, 15th Street Baptist Church, the first black church in Birmingham, Alabama, was bombed by members of the KKK, with four children, the youngest being 11, killed as a result.
So yes, Christians *have* been oppressed before. ...Just not in the way evangelicals want you to believe.

This is purely speculation on my end, but I've noticed that it seems like people (specifically younger queer people, partially under forty) are so used to queerphobes indignantly saying, "you have the right to marry, what more can you want?! Why do you shove it down our throats?!" that they internalize the idea that gay marriage and other rights were only fought for for queer assimilation.
The push for things like gay marriage wasn't just "to assimilate," and especially after the AIDs crisis, you very well could watch your lover or friend or mentor die in front of you and have no recourse. No protections. No guarantee that you could even say goodbye. Learning that - as a young queer myself - hammered home how important these things can be. To get where we are now didn't happen because of the magical benevolence of the cishets. We fought for that shit. We died for that shit.
Again, this is speculation, but I don't think young queers (even me) will truly understand the scope of queer history. It takes effort to learn about this, but it is an effort worth pursuing every single time. At the least, we owe it to honour the people who came before us who have sacrificed so much. We owe our communities that much, at least.

(trans!)zach and aviva were bunkmates at science camp. i know because i was there
#imagine them both at their first year of science camp! young and excited but also nervous and already feelin homesick on the first night#and they take comfort in each other and bond over their shared love of engineering#and become best buds practically overnight#and they keep getting each other as bunkmates every year and they pair up for everything and it’s all GREAT until it isn’t anymore#tfw some kid you met at summer camp becomes your lifelong sworn enemy. oops!#i have SO many thoughts about this concept#look. aviva being able to list out facts abt zach in mystery of the weird looking walrus can’t be just some plot-convenient intuition thing#those were things she learned over YEARS of friendship and staying up late at night trading whispered secrets#you can’t convince me otherwise#these two’s relationship has so much complexity to it actually. idc if canon barely touches on their history i’ll do it myself#hrnsgdhghh just imagine them sitting under a blanket together with flashlights after curfew because zach is afraid of the dark#aviva on her very first night of camp realizing that Uh Oh! she misses her family! and she doesn’t know anyone else here! and what if maybe#science camp isn’t gonna be as fun as she’d thought! only for the oncoming tears to stop in their tracks in order to comfort#this distraught bunkmate of hers. she adopts zach on the spot#them being penpals after camp ends PLEASE#wild kratts#zach varmitech#aviva corcovado#i also imagine that zach conveniently has his “wait i’m a dude” revelation at abt the same time their friendship ends#so they get new bunkmates for the first time that year#and also that their friendship ends at the beginning of their last/one of their last yrs of camp

hey uh is it just me or is it kind of weird when non-USamericans make fun of (usually young) USamericans who don't know geography, when for many people in US education it along with many other world history classes were not properly taught or even offered to begin with?
like... im about to start taking my first geography class today. i'm in college. i've always wanted desperately to learn geography but really didn't have many good resources for doing so. and isn't making fun of someone for something they don't know, idk, kind of a dick move

Reading London Under by Peter Ackroyd and I am SO disappointed that I did not read this before the Liztlie AU so I could just make the sewers/tunnels as gross and weird and disgusting and dangerous as possible. For those of you who thought Morgan's anachronistic open flame carbide headlamp was cool: my baby really needs to show off her methane-dodging skills.
I also forgot when you imbue a river with 1000 years of shit, you'll get peat with methane that sparks from the heat as you tunnel through it and just-
Appreciate that for a second! Dirt that lights on fire!

Hello! It might sound really odd, but I'm writing a fanfic and it's set in the UK. I saw that you're British. The characters are in secondary school (Year 11), and while I do my fair share of research, I am hopeful that perhaps you can aid me with this. if it's not too much trouble, of course, and only if you're comfortable with it. I appreciate the trouble of reading this long ask in the first place!
I know it varies for each school, but any bit of information will be helpful! In case you wish for examples of what I search: What do you do in form and do the students in it always change? Do you use phones in class? What school trips were like (and did you have school trips out of the UK?)? Would you usually use the bus or walk/use a car? And so so!
Please, it'd be a great help to my writing! It might never be truly accurate, but I wish to get as many details as I can about school life in the UK. For me, any shred of detail is important!
Thank you so so much for reading this, I appreciate it even if you don't answer. :)
Well first of all, thank you for thinking of me with this, it's very nice that you did :)
Also very new. Never expected anybody to come to me about this kind of stuff lol
And yeah, you're right, it really does vary between schools
I'm not sure if I could help much because I can't exactly remember everything that happened in high school. It's really just a blur for me. But I'll list what I can and do remember:
Also, I'm not in school anymore, so this is just from when I was there. Idk what may have changed since then
What we did in form -
The most common was doing the register, making sure everyone was there. Then the rest from there would vary. Sometimes our form teacher would talk to us about different topics, like bullying or organizing our stuff. And sometimes they'd have nothing to talk about, so we'd either talk to each other (our friends yknow) or talk to the teacher about something
Or sometimes the teacher had little activities for us to do. Either to improve organizing our work or just other activities (idk, drawing or card games. it was just supposed to pass the time)
I would probably equate it to a free period, depending on if the teacher had something to talk to us about or something for us to do. But you're definitely supposed to stay in the class throughout it
For year 11's, the very last year of high school, we would normally be told to complete any work we had in form time. So if the teacher didn't have anything to talk about, they'd say "okay, for the remainder of our time, do any work you have left to do in silence". If you had to do coursework on the computer then you had to ask if you could go get a computer, and if the answer was no (depending on time left in form), then you'd just do something else. Draw or something. Or complete any written homework you have
In my school, we were given form booklets, which were just like a simple schedule book. The first couple of pages had school rules and such, then there was a little section where we recorded our "target grades" (basically a whole "what could i have done better/what could i do next time" thing for each of your lessons and what grade you got in them for each year you were in the school). And the majority of the book was what could probably be described as a calendar schedule for each day of the week and a notes section (for anything you needed to remember to bring or do during the week)
And with the whole "teacher gave us stuff to help organize" thing, that would usually involve the form booklets too
I'm not sure what you mean by "do the students change", but I'm assuming you mean if any students can just go into any form, and the answer is no
There are forms for every year. Like, one year 7 form classroom wasn't for every student in year 7. The form rooms were split up between different rooms, at least 20 students to each room. So the form rooms would be assigned as 7A or 7B etc, so you could assign at least 20 students to one of the rooms and give them a number
For example, "which is your form?" "mine is 9C" "oh so you're in year 9?" "yep"
So each student was assigned a form room to be in, and they always had to go to that form when it was form time, and you have to do that all the way until you finish high school. Unless one of the students was bad and continuously disrupted form time in their own classroom, in which case the teacher could probably assign them to a different form so they didn't cause any more disruptions
Form time was usually had in the mornings before classes. You'd get there, the teacher would do the register, you'd do whatever in the remaining 30 minutes, and then go to your first class
Sometimes we'd have form time in the middle of the day though. Which, again, acted more like a free period than anything else. I think it was kind of rare to have in the middle of the day though. Sometimes we talked about stuff with the teacher, sometimes we didn't
(so I guess you could basically say it's like homeroom? I guess that's what Americans call it. sorry if I'm like, overexplaining stuff you already know, I'm just trying to cover it all)
Do you use phones in classes? -
As far as I remember, no, we weren't allowed phones in classes unless the teacher specifically said "you can use your phone". I can't remember why they would be used in the classroom, if ever. Maybe if the calculators weren't working, so you could use the one on your phone?
It was rare that they allowed it though. You couldn't even use your phone in the hallways, nevermind in the classrooms
You had to completely turn your phone off or mute it as soon as you got onto school grounds. No one was there as soon as you got into school to enforce this rule, they just kinda trusted us to do it (so obviously you had to be sneaky if you wanted to use it during the day)
If you ever needed to make a call without using your phone, you had to go down to the reception and talk to whoever was behind the desk and ask them if you could make a call. You'd tell them the number and they put you through to whoever you wanted to talk to
And this is kinda obvious but I'll say it anyway - if you got caught with your phone out, you had to give it to the teacher and you'd get it back by the end of the week. I think
What school trips were like -
Again, not sure about this one
They were... chaotic, I guess. As much as it can be when there are a bunch of teachers trying to look after a whole group of kids all at once for a whole day. You'd go on a coach with the rest of the other students and go to the place (wherever it was), and it was kind of a struggle to organise everyone
Sorry, but I don't remember much about what they were like
I do remember that we went to the movies though. Sometimes it would be as a reward if the class did good on exams
I'm sure we went to other places but. can't remember where else
Did you have school trips outside of the UK? -
Yes
I never went on any though
The school's funding wasn't great, so there weren't a lot of trips outside of the country. Since I was at the school, I can count maybe 1 or 2 trips that people signed up for. The only one I can remember specifically is a trip to Paris though
Transport -
Car. I was driven to school by my family
There were buses, but I heard they were hell (other kids being shitty yknow), so I never went on one
I'd walk home if family wasn't available to pick me up
-
Uhhh I'm not sure what else you want to know lol. I don't know how much you know, so...
I guess I'll just mention food real quick?
And the queen/royalty and history. Can't forget that
-
Cafeteria -
We call it Canteen
(I have no idea why)
It's usually the same experience I guess? You're supposed to pay for food, but there were kids who had free school meals. There were also those who had packed lunches with food from home
Cooking -
Food Technology
So the teachers asked you to pick a recipe for something you wanted to make, then you had to bring ingredients from home and cook it all in the classroom-kitchen at school
Might be exclusive to just my school but, the class was mostly written work. So you didn't get to cook all the time
(which I would say kinda sucked, and it did, but honestly preserving the ingredients for the class was a nightmare too. Food Tech was usually during the day, so it could be your third class of the day or last class, which meant you had to bring your ingredients in the morning, keep it somewhere safe in the school - whether it was in your form room or in the classroom-kitchen - and hope things didn't spill or get stolen. OR you had to bring the bag of ingredients everywhere with you. And then you had a problem if the thing you were cooking took more than an hour, because the class was only one hour. You were lucky if you had Food Tech for 2 hours. So like I said, a nightmare)
UK History -
Let me just say that we don't learn about the monarchy, or at least, not all of it
The most we learned about history was the Tudors, the black plague, and the Victorians I think. King Henry and his six wives
It should definitely be mentioned that I hated history class and so didn't pay a lot of attention in it, but I know that we didn't learn about the monarchy
We didn't learn about the queen, or the king, or whatever happened in the past with them. The most we learn about it is from our families (and whether they tell us the whole truth - if they know it - or the "good" version is completely up to them, unfortunately), the media (who kiss royal ass like no tomorrow) and from the internet, if we choose to question what we're told
Other british people on this site have told me the same thing, that they didn't learn about the monarchy in school either, so. take that as you will
I don't know if it depends between schools though so *shrugs*
-
Oh yeah and I'll mention the whole teams thing
-
Teams -
Yeah there's assigned teams for the students
And again I'm not sure if this is exclusive to my school or if it's every school, but we had 4 colour teams (red, blue, green and yellow)
And kids would get sorted into these different teams
I can't exactly remember what they were for??
I think, at the end of the year, one of the teams would get awarded points depending on how well students did in tests and good behaviour and stuff and the rewards could range from like. a trip to the cinema or just a trip in general to somewhere fun (like an amusement park) or a free school day (where your entire team would go into a classroom and just watch movies and do activities and stuff for the whole day) or something like that
I'm sure not every school did this, but mine did
-
That's it. I guess? Send me another ask if there's something else you wanna know specifically
But this is just from my experience
Hope this helps in some way :)

This will probably get looks from performative and ultimately harmful non-transfems despite my being transfem but-
Some y'alls only interaction with feminist history and theories, radical feminism regardless of its intersectionality and really any feminism deeper and louder and meaner than blatant choice feminism like the barbie movie and whatever TF taylor swift thinks shes got going on is through your occasional and short interactions with terfs and it shows. You call vagina art terfy and it fucking isnt. Its feminist art. Your brainrot is making you a fucking mra. The fact y'all think talking about the man vs bear situation is about/started/ran by terfs (and encouraged some really questionable other transfems shitting on it despite it clearly just being about women's safety and yes all men, not transphobia.), everything from questioning wether certain groups belong in our community to thinking a word is a slur or having a lesbian icon (I have sources don't test me) or not to not liking a certain band has been called "terf rhetoric". I'm all for us Transmascs talking about how terfs affect us cause they absolutely do and their harm to the transmasc community can not be understated but like.... Y'all are not allowed to call Jack shit terf rhetoric anymore. Like nothing. You don't know what it means, you litterally call transmedicalism and sysmedicalism terf rhetoric. Do you mean exclusionist? Say exclusionist. Terfs are not the end all be all hate group. They have a very specific complex mindset that affects so many people in specific ways. Someone hating Neopronouns is not fucking terf rhetoric. It's nbphobia. Holy fuck. Learn what words mean.
(intersectional trans radfems exist, radical feminism isn't terfs and swerfs and historical radfems would laugh in their faces for their idiocy)
#clover speaks#clover vents#hating bi lesbians is not terf rhetoric vagina art is not terf rhetoric medical sexism is not a terf topic#everytime you call some form or bigotry or some form of deep cut feminism you dont know shit about terf rhetoric#another trans person loses their wings#terfs harm people via certain avenues in specific ways#you've turned it into a fucking meaningless buzzword to decribe everything from opinions you dont like to actual bigotry#its basically gotten the exclusionist radical regressive gatekeep gaslight terreatmemt#words that mean very specific real things but gets so overused it means fuck all now#if your explanation for why something is supposed terf rhetoric is just something something splitting the community#something something exclusionary something something heard one say it once then you dont have the authority to fucking talk about it#I've been in the trenches fighting terfs and learning about their veiws and mindsets to accurately fight and rehabilite them#the hell they've actively put me and many other trans people through can not be understated#one called you a name one sent you a hate anon and sudeenly your the master of knowledge? gtfo#the specifics and deep rooted hate and history of that group is serious and every time you call some fucking#meaningless community discourse about if some inane insult is a slur like stupid or freak and call it terf rhetoric#you give terfs more fog to hide in you obscure the enemy that much more#you make it harder to find real actual terfs and their nazi friends when you call a fucking antikin a terf for being antikin#stop comparing other groups to terfs and heres a quick ajd easy way to identify if something is actually fucking terf rhetoric#dose the topic specifically talk about terfs or terfism or transmysogny/transandrophobia in the context of exclusionary radical feminism?#if the answer is yes then their might KEY WORD MIGHT be terf rhetoric involved.#if the answer is no then its not fucking terf rhetoric plain and fucking simple#find another buzzword milo because transmedicalism by definition cant BE FUCKING TRANS EXCLUSIONARY RADICAL FEMINIST RHETORIC#God this fucking community sometimes is so fucking exhausting#reminding me yet again that its mostly young and mostly people who lose their minds when i bring up terfs and racism#and yes you perisex afab trans person who thinks this isnt about you and the random shit youve false flagged as terfy#this is about you and your misusage of a serious allegation and association to falsely claim some terminally online take is terfy#You just make me hold my head in my hands and sigh really loud and try not to send you to the shadow realm#Not everything an alleged terf believes makes something terfism or terfy#please actually learn what words mean before you use them and make an ass of yourself called some tranfem exclusionist a fucking terf psyop

reblogs off since im tired of the dumb fucking discourse happening here, go read this long post and reblog it instead please.
ok so tumblr also really needs this reminder based on some posts ive seen around lately, the "babygirlification" of JSTOR is bad. like Bad Bad. did you all just collectively forget history? did you alll just forget they have blood on their hands? just because they publish science stuff in an ever so slightly more ethical way than springer and are a little silly on social media sometimes? JSTOR killed aaron swartz (wikipedia). in his fight for freedom of information he downloaded papers off of jstor (with acedemic access from MIT) to share and make freely accessible (as all information should be), for this he was charged with wire fraud, computer fraud, unlawfully obtaining information from a protected computer, and recklessly damaging a protected computer. he was facing up to 50 years in prison and a 1 million USD fee for a simple act of downloading files he lawfully had access to. with this court case the US government drove one of the most important online activists and programmers (he is behind so much stuff you all take for granted) into suicide in the name of JSTOR.
JSTOR isn't the cool girl on the block. this isnt a call to boycott them (though please learn how to use things such as sci-hub and fight for open science and freedom of information in general please <3), but please dont glorify them as some sort of cutesy platform.

Something that I think Warhammer 40,000 storytellers miss sometimes is the sheer scale of their setting. I mean, don't get me wrong - I love the big, dramatic clashes, the characters you can buy in mini form and their convoluted, interwoven lore, the dramatic combats against unstoppable foes across a thousand ruined worlds. But that's the top of the setting, as it were - the most powerful beings in the universe, all fighting for supremacy. And at ground level, the level of the ordinary person, are so many other stories.
Did you know that a Lunar-class void cruiser has a crew of 95,000? Nearly a hundred thousand people, aboard a spaceship five kilometers long. A city, flying through outer space to wage war. Many of those people are proper trained soldiers, fresh from some academy or veterans of long, grueling campaigns, and many more are pressed into service, begrudgingly laying their lives at their Emperor's feet. But, unless the ship is currently actively involved in a really bloody campaign, most of those people were born aboard that ship. Most of their parents were born aboard it. And their grandparents. And their great-grandparents. Lineages stretching back centuries, so far that the original soldier who came aboard has been forgotten. A lot of those people probably know, on some level, that they're aboard a ship flying through space - but a lot of them probably don't, and I guarantee you almost none of them understand what that means. This ship is their world. To look out the window means madness so often that they avoid it - not that windows are readily available anyway. Most of them probably barely even understand that they're fighting. All they know is that when the readouts on their analog instruments display like so, when they hurry to obey the blared orders through the klaxon, the Emperor is pleased with them. They were born into that world. When they were children they did smaller tasks the adults couldn't. Their entire existence was winding metal corridors, laid out according to some archaic design, any logic that might dictate their layout long since degraded after millennia of ignorant maintenance, lit only by emergency lights that have long since become the default. They learned how to read an angle readout or how to relay an order perfectly the way another child might learn history or math. When they grew up, their service was flawless, born of pride and ignorance, and when they grew old and died, their legacy was remembered until it was forgotten. Many were killed in battle, but who cares? They gave their lives to the Emperor - a name whose meaning they don't understand, but whose importance they believe in wholeheartedly, all but synonymous with the commanding officers up above.
Sometimes, the klaxons sound a specific command, and every person on board who understands what it means feels a deep, awful dread as they run to their battle stations. They don't know what a warp jump is. They don't understand they're going from one place to another by the fastest way available. All they know is that, for a time, the ship dips into hell. The corridors go wrong. Things and people might not be where or what they were before. Daemons stalk the halls, and must be killed by any who can hold a lasgun. The overcrowded berths, the little nooks that families find for themselves - they are not private anymore. They are not safe. Things drift through the shift that do not care about the laws of physics, but that delight in killing and torturing human beings. Vast energies shake the ship and tear parts of it away - their home, their world, their existence, the biggest thing they can imagine, assaulted by something bigger. Is it the Emperor's punishment for failure? Is this what battle is? What's going on? They don't know, and no one who does can be bothered to tell them. The dread of those who have seen this before is even worse, because they don't know how long it will be. It might be just a few hours. It might be days, or weeks, or months, or years, or decades. It might be centuries, as the captain of the ship goes hunting daemons deep in the warp - the officers live that long, after all, and have little care for those who don't. There will be people born in hell, who spend their entire lives fighting from the day they can stand, and who die in hell, as old age and need catch up to them and they curl up in a corner to perish. To them, it isn't even hell. It's just the world. The world is death and pain and cruelty, an infinite metal box through which monsters stalk, and sometimes you must run to a battle station and do as you're ordered to do. And sometimes, as they reach forty or fifty or even a ripe old sixty, the ship drops out of the Warp, and, for the final years of their life, they are granted a life of relatively safe service better than anything they ever hoped to dream of.
Those are the kinds of stories I want to see more of. Super-soldiers fighting each other is cool, yes, but I want to see this universe explored. I want stories from the perspective of those that keep the Imperium going, or the aeldar, or the tyranids, or anyone, really. There's just so much potential in this setting. It deserves it.

please stop scrolling and take the time to read this.
i don't think people understand the extent of the horror happening in palestine right now. "death" means nothing to people because of desensitisation so let me just tell you what white phosphorus is. it's being used in israeli munitions and has been and will continue to be fired across gaza and the palestinian borders.
white phosphorus burns when it comes into contact with oxygen (at nearly 800°C or 1500°F. the human body can withstand ~50°C for reference.) the air you breathe in ignites and it is near impossible extinguish. it sticks to clothing and skin and is very difficult to remove because it will continue to ignite in air. it burns flesh up to the bone and even past the bone because it penetrates tissue and is absorbed VERY easily. if you inhale it it'll destroy your respiratory tract and lungs. it can cause failure in multiple organs including the liver, kidneys and heart. it is being released in one of the most densely populated places on earth.
the only way to treat someone exposed to white phosphorus is to submerge them in saline or water and to pick out the substance with forceps, and when you undress a wound the substance can re-ignite. this is just ONE weapon that is being used to kill palestinian people right now. palestine does not have access to medical care, humanitarian aid, power, or internet. their hospitals are being bombed. gaza is one of the most densely populated places in the world with over 50% of the population being children. many children are the sole survivors of their families. there are videos of children experiencing panic attacks and symptoms of ptsd. the fact that israel has committed war crimes in plain sight means that we can only imagine what will happen to the palestinians in complete darkness.
israel has and will continue to deny this. your interests and fandom will still be here, you will wake up tomorrow morning and see your friends and family, but an entire nation of people are being wiped off the map. being silent is being complacent. reblog, spread information, tell people in real life, attend protests, sign petitions, call your government offices, at the very least be angry and upset and horrified because once you become numb and indifferent and hopeless the oppressors will have already won.
what's happening right now is more than a genocide and once it becomes a part of history we'll wonder how the world let this happen. genocides have been part of all nations. just because it is far away does not mean you don't have to be concerned. the fact that YOUR governments and YOUR idols and the people around YOU are supporting the mass eradication of an entire group of people should scare you. it shouldn't make you feel anything less than sick and angry and disgusted. DO something about it, no matter how small you feel your voice is, because palestinians no longer have one.
[edit] links to some helpful reblogs: one & two

learn about palestine with this masterlist of info
+ a further reblog of mine
[edit 2] about palestinians "not having a voice" at the time i wrote this post internet connection was cut off entirely and even journalists weren't able to report for a period of time — that is all i meant by that. they of course have a voice and i never meant to undermine how people are risking their lives in gaza to get information out there and i apologise if thats what people took from it, it was not my intention but it is entirely my bad. please continue to spread information and updates from gaza as they come.
