MASSIVE Sonic 3 spoilers, don’t click on if you haven’t seen it. I need to infodump about one specific scene.

I wanna talk about the Super Sonic and Super Shadow fight scene, which may I say, was one of the COOLEST things to come out of the Sonic series thus far.

It posed the question, who would win? Super Sonic or Super Shadow?

It straight up told us the answer, with Shadow saying “you’ve won, so finish it!”

But Sonic didn’t win. I don’t think he would win that fight regardless. I think Shadow said that and gave Sonic an opening to kill him to prove a point.

Even while still on Earth, Shadow was goading Sonic about how they were alike, how Sonic was acting out of anger the same way he criticized Shadow of doing. He was trying to push Sonic to a breaking point. He brought up and mocked Tom, there’s no way he wouldn’t expect to be hit for that. At MOST, maybe he was caught by surprise, or underestimated Sonic, but I think he left himself open on purpose. Shadow is too skilled of a fighter to make that mistake.

Then Shadow, on the moon, tried to goad Sonic into killing him, “finishing” it. He stayed down, but I don’t think he was out or done fighting. We see that he wasn’t beat because of the Eclipse Cannon fight later. I think he feigned being beat to prove to Sonic that he does not have the moral high ground; Sonic can be dragged to the depths of anger, despair, revenge, and violence over something painful happening the exact same way Shadow was. And Sonic proved that Shadow was wrong about him.

Regardless, I think this perspective lends a lot to Shadow’s character as a whole, and his rivalry with Sonic. Though they hadn’t known each other long in this continuity, Shadow believes he is better than Sonic in every way. Even in the context of the movie, he probably sees Sonic as some naive, incredibly cocky and powerful kid who acts like he knows what’s right when he can’t even fathom what Shadow has been through. Shadow has to show that he’s better than him. That even when Sonic thinks he’s won, even in their most powerful form, Shadow still will rise above him.

And yet, Sonic still surprised him and proved him wrong. Because Shadow so firmly believed in his righteous pursuit of justice and revenge as the only way to go, until Sonic chose not to finish the fight and kill him.

And then, as annoying as he finds Sonic, he can respect him because he showed Shadow a way he hadn’t even considered. There’s something to be admired in that level of optimism, even if ultimately, Shadow still believes he’s better than Sonic.

It Shouldn't Need to Happen...

Someone open the tequila! I'm back on my Kataang salt.

One of the (many) things I hate about Kataang is that there is no real build on Katara's side. Even the moments that get trotted out as proof that Katara liked Aang back (like the dance in that stupid Footloose pastiche that meant nothing to the overall plot) are undercut by the fact that Katara doesn't acknowledge them. It's business as usual afterwards, and nothing about how she treats him (like her baby brother-son) changes. The only explicit proof we get that Katara likes him back in an he is my equal and I see him as a potential partner way is that awkward kiss in the end. Here's the thing, that kiss shouldn't have been necessary.

Go with with me for a second. I was recently revisiting Legally Blonde (classic), and it gave me another reason to hate the Kataang kiss in the finale. Compare how Kataang was handled to Elle and Emmet's relationship in Legally Blonde. We never see them together in an explicitly romantic way. Even the last scene, at Elle's graduation, he's in the crowd, and the whole post script reveal that he and Elle had been dating for two years and were about to be engaged could have been skipped and nothing would've been lost. The movie wasn't about Elle and Emmet. It was about Elle learning that she was smarter and more capable than anyone realized, even her, and she didn't have to change anything about her personality to be successful. Still, the fact that they did end up together makes sense. We understand why they are attracted to each other. In Emmet, Elle finds a rare supportive figure who believes in her abilities and values her beyond her physical appearance. He, in turn, is drawn to Elle's determination and intelligence (and the fact that she's hot is a bonus). That's made clear in the movie before anything remotely romantic happens between them. They don't kiss in the movie at all. We don't even see the proposal. Still, them ending up together makes sense because the movie set them up for it. It was a bit disappointing that we didn't get to see them kiss, but that's not what the movie was about. My point is, we didn't need them to kiss to believe their relationship. We may have wanted it, but we didn't need it. Because the writers did their job.

Circling back around to Kataang. They needed the kiss to show where their relationship stood. If the show had ended without them kissing, even with Katara going out to stand on the balcony with Aang, it could just be read as completely platonic. Following with the undercurrent of mom/sitter and child, Katara going out to the balcony with Aang could've been read as his caretaker's quiet pride in the child she'd raised. They needed to kiss to make it clear that their relationship was no longer platonic, and it was entirely because the writers had neglected to give Katara any real reason to want to be with Aang romantically.

once on youtube i saw a girl who had a comic and she redrew her least favorite comic page and used it as like a guide of what and what not do when making comics.

im not asking you to do that but if you did which handplates page would you redo and why?

Hate how I drew Papyrus's head on this page, hate it!! If I was going to go back and redo any page I'd go back to this one and redraw Papyrus.

Sans is otherwise fine on this page but I don't like his head in this panel, I'd redo that.

I don't like the back of Papyrus's jaw here, I remember struggling with it at the time. I could do a better job of it now I think.

I'd want to make the gutter bigger here to differentiate these two panels more.

The right panel here is too cramped, you can't see the focal point very well (the SOUL in his chest). Would probably restructure the panels to try and give it more breathing room, probably cut the Papyrus one.

I'd make the blue glow around Papyrus's hand more obvious so it'd be more clear what he was trying to do.

The text in this panel is confusing because Sans's speech bubble is near Papyrus, would probably re-stage this to make it more clear who's talking (aside from fonts).

Don't like Asgore's expression in either of these panels, I'd want to redo these.

This one was just me being dumb and forgetting Sans was blind in his right eye, I did a quick fix at the time but nowadays I'd like to go back and shift his head around properly to make it clear he's looking with his left one.

The first two comics look weird to me but those were early, that makes sense. For a lot of pages it'd just be small changes, nothing super major but just smoothing out things. Inconsistencies with Gaster's hands, weird looking Blasters, Asgore's horns, bed too big, couch looks bad, that kind of thing. But the ones above are the ones that just jump immediately to mind as a "man that looks wonky ugh" moment, haha.

On the flipside I've always liked the brothers in these panels. There are always parts in the comic that are going to look wonky to me, but there are parts I still really like too! Important to remember both things.

I think it's fascinating how Meng Yao is one of the most cynical characters in mdzs and yet, at the same time, I'd argue, one of the most idealistic.

There are goals jgy has not just for himself but for the world at large and he is very determined to accomplish them. I guess in that way idealism isn't all that far from ambition, and he certainly has ambition in spades. We often view "idealist" characters as those unwilling to compromise morally, and jgy will compromise a lot. But if you look closer, it becomes clear that that is because that underlying goal is so important he is willing to compromise anything but that.

Which makes him a very very interesting character, especially as a major foil to much more classically idealist characters like Nie Mingjue and Wei Wuxian.

it does actually mean a lot to me that solas brings up josephine as someone he respected and cared for in the inquisition btw. especially because they don’t have that many canon interactions in dai, if at all. just his quiet observations of josie’s unfailing kindness and work towards a better, more peaceful thedas being something that left an impression on him and even 10 years on, something he thinks of fondly. a god so convinced he has to break the world to fix it, who pauses to admire the way a diplomat can do it just by offering an olive branch
