I swear, he was THE BEST part of the movie.

(Semi-spoilers from now on) I read about people tearing up at the scenes with the elderly ladies or the talks about being a woman, but for me the scenes with Ken were the most emotional ones for some reason. Seeing him struggling with the changes he himself brought into the Barbie World, being aware that he's just hurt and lost... There's a lot to unpack (*wink*) about him and you will definitely need to see this movie more than once to understand the aspects of Ken's character, like how he represents both girls and women's struggles, but also what young boys and men go through when it comes to toxic masculinity etc. I don't know how many girls can actually relate to Ken more than Barbie in this movie, but I would also be disappointed if my dream social concept wasn't about horses...

AND "I'M JUST KEN" IS SUCH A BANGER!!! I've listened to it before watching the movie, but actually seeing the entire number? Sympathising with Ken and understanding his struggles, even though it's portrayed in a more comical way? I cannot explain what I felt at that moment, but it was both fun and heartbreaking in a weird way? Definitely rooting for Ken!

Ryan Gosling did such a phenomenal job. The line delivery was absolutely flawless. My favourites were definitely "Hold my ice cream, Ken" and where Barbie told him to find his purpose, and he was like a little lost boy having a crisis on the floor XD The facial expressions were great, the comedic timing was really visible here. Anything involving movement and choreography was also amazing.

If you're hesitant to watch this movie for any reasons (maybe, like me, you were worried about the polarising reviews), just do it for Ken. I know his character will not disappoint you.

I mentioned it in this post, but it's just so funny to me to imagine a Jason who grew up with an absolutely WILD Dick Grayson as an older brother, while the younger batkids grew up with a more mellowed out and mature (arguable but when measured against the other kids, he wins by a landslide) Dick Grayson.

Summary:

Elain was gifted many things in life, but privacy was not one of them.

Having been born nestled between her two sisters’ debuts to the world, Elain had long since grown accustomed to a fundamental lack of privacy in her life.

As a girl she had shared a room first with Nesta, then, after Nesta declared that she required peace and quiet from her annoying, whiney little sisters, Elain had been swept into Feyre’s nursey to share the space. The two had remained bunkmates until her father made a foolish bid on a trade route and the family began a swift, unyielding churn into the throes of poverty where they all were forced to sleep stuffed in the same room in the cottage.

In the walls of the tiny cottage no one was spared a shred of reprieve from the others. Their father rarely left his bed, choosing to remain in it all day laying in ailment- though it was not always clear if it was his mind or his body that kept him there for months on end. Feyre retreated into the forest finding both food and solitude in the thicket. Nesta was never found without a book in her hands- her thin nose in between pages and her sharp mind off in faraway lands.

Elain had found sanctuary in the Earth. Despite the soil being starved of nutrients, Elain managed to cull a small smattering of garden right outside the cottage front door. A tiny, beloved space that was truly hers in the estate.

While the garden was her sanctuary, it did not provide the same firm boundaries her sisters enjoyed with their own solitary pursuits. While Nesta would make a point to ignore anyone who dared to speak to her midbook and no one dared join Feyra when she sprinted into the forest, Elain often found her garden did not provide quite the same level of solitude. Feyra would drag her paints outside near the struggling chrysanthemums. Nesta would lay out a blanket under the old oak tree as if the shadows could mask the smut she gripped in her hands. Papa would, on occasion, stumble right through her small dandelion patch in search of something he could never articulate.
