10 JoshxEddie hcs because I rewatched s5 and am delulu

This largely takes place in a season 5-adjacent AU, but I have various hcs that span across the show. And also Marisol doesn't exist. If it gets enough interest I'll write it.

Before they get together Eddie sees a creepy guy harassing Josh at a bar one time when they're all out for drinks after most of the main squad leaves and pretends to be his boyfriend to intimidates the fuck out of creepy guy until he leaves Josh alone. Josh has a panic attack about the creepy guy because of his trauma. Eddie helps guide him through it, then gets him home safely.

After that day Eddie starts feeling Things whenever he thinks of Josh and he can't put a name to it but he wants to make sure Josh is safe in a Overprotective Black Cat sort of way so he begins texting him regularly to make sure he's alright.

They've always been aware of each other, they work in the same circles just different environments. When Eddie starts working at dispatch he finally starts noticing Josh. Actually noticing him.

Josh and Eddie can't STAND each other at first when Eddie joins dispatch. More so Josh, because Eddie is a hot firefighter with a big heart and Josh knows needs to tread carefully. Rivals to lovers hands down.

Their first date happens when Eddie gets tired of being single and takes Hen's advice on a speed dating event at one of her favorite bars. She forgot to tell him it was a Queer bar but hey, Eddie isn't homophobic. His bestfriend is bisexual and has a boyfriend. Maybe it'll be fun. When he matches with Josh they're both painfully awkward about it until Josh and Eddie start gossiping about the other speed daters like they're watching telenovelas or the bachelor.

The infamous "You're a guest in this house, act like it!" scene ends up with Eddie rushing forward and kissing Josh against a wall because he cannot stand this man. Eddie thinks he's so smug and cocky and he thinks he hates him so much with his eyes and his soft lips. They've had all this tension building up between them, all Eddie wants is to kiss his stupid face. Imagine his surprise when Josh kisses him back.

Eddie spends weeks searching for sexuality labels, trying to find the right one. He invites Josh to go out for a beer a couple of times during his questioning phase just to spend time with him off the clock again, and Josh helps explain the idea of not needing a label unless it's something Eddie connects to. Eddie doesn't have to identify as anything specific unless he wants to. Eddie cries a lot when he gets back home.

When he finally does discover the term demisexual it suddenly feels like everything makes sense. All the puzzle pieces are perfectly aligned. Something tight unspools in his chest. He tells Josh, who celebrates with him after work. The 118 shows up too, so Eddie tells them as well and it becomes a night of celebration.

Bonus:

Eddie likes when Josh bosses him around.

Once they become established Eddie realizes how much he loves Josh being in control in the bedroom and loves how easily Josh can make his head go quiet and everything feel still.

At Death’s Door Recap

Have I mentioned how much I love Season of Mists?? I’ve been really trying to drag out my reread of it to better sit with each issue, read up on analysis of the text/art, etc. It’s been…hard. Because I just want to devour it.

Turns out that in 2003, DC released an alternate point of view story in manga form. Told from Death’s perspective and written/illustrated by Jill Thompson. Now, I’ve never read manga before, but sign me up because alternate pov stories and missing scenes are my jam! So now, I present to you some thoughts:

First, this is the most manga panel and it kind of is a good panel to sum up the whole vibe:

Thompson did a great job adapting the character design of the Endless to manga style. I’m imagining that this is likely how some manga-fans would perceive Dream and his siblings. Ha!

Art side by side

Here’s a side by side for comparison. Panel redraw by Thompson (Dream’s manga-cloak!) of his return vs Kelly Jone’s (haute couture peplum?-cloak) original. I think I actually like how Thompson drew this panel better as I have a better sense of the construction of the cloak without losing any of the drama.

Sibling interactions: Hilarity Ensues!

Most of the story follows Death once Lucifer closes Hell and how Delirium and Despair come to her aid. I gotta say, I love how Thompson treated the sibling relationships in this story.

The sisters seem to have a closer relationship than in the Gaiman original run, but it’s done in such a way that it still slots in nicely with what we know of them in canon. I LOVE that Del and Despair pitch in to help Death. Their interactions seem less GoT and more like what we see from Del/Dream in Brief Lives. Hilarity Ensues!!

Like any good sisters, they totally creep on Dream’s talk with Nada. Way to eavesdrop, ladies!

A softer side of Despair

I particularly loved seeing the portrayal of Despair in this story. She’s given a softer and more compassionate touch. Or maybe Del just has that effect on her family. Lots of Brief Lives road-trip vibes between the two.

In conclusion

I’m kind of taking anything released by DC that wasn’t written by Gaiman as sanctioned, official fan fiction. This story was one of the best kinds for me: charming story, great characterization and a fun read.

Overall a fun companion to my favorite arc. Great art. And a great detour. Next up: my fav issue of Season of Mists.

So I've got questions not tied necessarily to any one chapter (but may be spoilers) - did Sam and Ryan talk after leaving Christopher's house? Would Sam consider joining the HRA at any point, or even simply lending minor aid/turning a blind eye? Are we going to get a voice scene involving them? Are any of the four humans (screw Max, nobody cares about Max) they rescued going to feature in future chapters?

... dang there was something else too but I can't remember

I'll keep some of these answers vague because, as tends to be the case, you have some accurate hunches when it comes to stuff that's coming XD

First, no, they didn't talk - Sam felt super awkward carrying Ryan in their pocket and didn't really know how to make conversation. Ryan might have tried, if he wasn't tiny and also in a pocket. Maybe they'll get a chance to bond later, who knows?

Second...perhaps? First and foremost, they're Christopher's friend - even if they don't understand at first, they'll support him in whatever he chooses to do. That's pretty clear based on the last few chapters - I'm pretty sure Sam knew Christopher wasn't keeping the humans for himself, so that could be considered "turning a blind eye." And maybe with more exposure to humans, they'll start to understand more - honestly Danny and them would really get along if they gave each other a chance.

As for whether we'll get a POV for Sam (I think that's what you mean), I haven't planned one yet, but it's not off the table. Maybe not before the main story wraps up - but I do want to do some one-shots and shorts after I end ITWOM, so maybe then!

And will we see the rescued humans again? Yes. Definitely. Remember that super fluffy thing I said I wrote the other day? Heheheh.

I might not be able to resist more Christopher/Max interactions though, we'll see
