Welcome all to the Quotable Disney Tournament!

Perhaps the easiest way to determine the best Disney quote would be to ask:

"Magic Mirror on the wall, which is the fairest Quote of all?"

Alas, we have yet to stumble across such a gifted mirror in our life... (but if you have one: reach out, maybe we could make a deal???) Besides, democracy is a great second choice to magical omnipotence!

This tournament consists of a collection of 128 Quotes, be them solo sayings or exchanges, going all the way back to the very first Animated Feature Film, and every decade there after.

However, with so many words, we are going to wait to construct a pictural bracket for you all. You'll just have to be surprised which quotes go up against each other this first round!

We did create 'cards' of a sort with each Quote on them. And while they are exquisite (omg thanks!), we ask you vote on the content of the words and not our artistic choices.

The first group of polls will be out on December 8th! And another about every 3 days afterwards. [edit: every 4 days starting with the Dec 22 reset.] *

Below we gave you the organization approach and fine print, for those interested:

We have divided all into two Groups of 64. All quotes from the same movie/show/place are in the same group. This prevents two, say, Mushu (Mulan) Quotes from being the finalists, but they could be up against each other as semi- or quarter-finalists. The bracket building also included an attempt at seeding, where those which had more submissions/propaganda were ranked higher. Thus the idea is number 1 of each half goes against their number 64 and so on, meeting at 32 and 33.** We only want to release 8 polls a day. This means 8 total groups for the first round. Each poll will be 1 week long (as usual) so this round might feel LOOOONG even with the staggered releases. We will also provide a 'master list' of sorts for each group with links to each poll in that group. You are encouraged to share your thinkings and propaganda for or against. If it becomes outrageous we will step in (has yet to happen). We only reblog reblog comments, not tags, not screenshots of replies. Also as typical, any tie will see both move on individually to the next round. Finally: the fonts used on the cards are either available on Google docs, fontspace.com, or fontmeme.com--and one on fontbolt.com Here is where we got a start for looking for the fonts. And while they all had all 26 letters, they did not all have all the numbers or symbols.

10 Disney hot takes/probably unpopular opinions (Part 3)

"Be Prepared" is not all that--So I'll just say that I'm not a fan of "The Lion King" (another hot take?), but I wanted to check out this song since people hyped it up, and I hadn't heard it in years. While I find the production very unique, I didn't feel as invested in the song as other villain numbers. IDK why people say this is the best Disney villain song.

2. "Moana" didn't carry it's message (or at least the parallels) very well--At least to me. The theme of self-identity doesn't translate well to me since despite exploration culture being lost, there was really no problem with her home, aside from Te Ka's influence draining the islands. Moana telling Te Fiti that not to give into despair didn't feel like a correlation between the two, since the loss of seafaring didn't make Moana's people angry or cruel.

3. Evil Amaya would've been better than the evil couple idea--Amaya's voice actress revealed that during auditions, she was meant to be the only villain while Magnifico was a good guy, and by callbacks, the roles were reversed. Seeing how Magnifico brought up valid points about wishes and the fact that he BUILT Rosas, I think having him as the good king would've worked better in the film's favor for a sense of nuance, allowing him to seem like the villain while Amaya was the true threat to the kingdom, appearing as a benevolent force like in the final product, before ripping the ground from under everyone.

4. The next original musical should be inspired by Native American, Middle Eastern, or Southeast Asian culture--Given the mixed feedback these three films have received on a cultural perspective (and "Raya and the Last Dragon" wasn't even a musical), Disney making their next big musical from one of these cultures would definitely help the company's reputation, and perhaps make people appreciate the other three films more know that more representation is available.

5. "The Lion King" remake should've used humans--It continues to frustrate me that Disney put a lot of work into Beyonce and Lin-Manuel Miranda working on related material for the remake, but as of yet, refusing to make an animated musical set in Africa with human leads. Given how amazing the costumes are for the Broadway show, I think adapting the live-action film in a similar way with humans instead of CGI would've been a more creative and interesting remake.

6. "Kingdom of the Sun" had boring music except for "Snuff Out the Light"--If the film was ever rescued and revived, I'd only keep Yzma's villain song. As of now, the film that would eventually become "The Emperor's New Groove" had 4 known songs, with two light-hearted songs, a villain song, and a love ballad. I didn't really find "Walk the Llama Llama" or "Why Can't a Human Be More Like a Rock?" engaging or interesting, and "One Day She'll love Me" sounded like very standard 90s ballad--but perhaps that was an end credits version I ended up hearing.

7. Moana should've had brothers--Okay, the original 8 is A LOT, but I would've liked to see it since Disney is much more likely to cover sister relationships rather than brother relationships, let alone brother-sister relationships. Plus it's fufill my desire for a larger main cast (assuming Moana didn't leave them behind as well).

8. "Brother Bear" should've focused on Kenai and his brothers as humans--I'm always frustrated how little Disney focuses on brotherly relationships in contrast to sisterly ones, and I do think it's weird that they were trying to make "The Lion King" with bears (this version being inspired by King Lear in contrast to TLK being inspired by Hamlet) and it somehow became "Brother Bear." Connecting to points #4 and #5, it would've been great for this to be a Native American musical, but with humans instead.

9. Stephen Schwartz should've written the music for "Mulan"--I wouldn't trade the music of "Mulan" easily, but as Stephen is one of my favorite songwriters of all time and he was originally involved in the project, I kinda wish he'd gotten to be part of the soundtrack, especially if this meant he could've written more songs than the 4 we got in the final version.

10. We should get more non-princess Disney princesses--While I'm not against literal princesses (either through marriage or birth), I do think Mulan is the odd one out as the only Disney princess who isn't from a noble family. I think that'd be cool if we had more Disney heroines who earned the official Disney princess label.

Yep. I turn into a monster because I make making the bed fun by getting in side the sheets when changing the duvet cover 😂

3. what’s your job?

I am a PhD research student full time, and I also work as a teaching assistant running tutorials during the semester for the undergraduates.

4. if you could go back to school, would you?

Once I am done with this PhD in another (hopefully) two years, thats it for me. No more degrees. No more school expcept for working in a university

5. can you parallel park?

Nope. Not a hope. I cannot do it. I can reverse into a spot but I cannot parallel park.

6. do you think aliens are real?

Aliens and Ghosts. 100% I believe they're out there somewhere. Probably laughing at us.

7. can you drive a manual car?

Yep. It's the only car type I've ever driven. I love my little Micra.

8. guilty pleasure?

I love Drag Race. I will binge seasons I've seen multiple times. I know the lyrics to most of the songs written for the show and the musicals.

And yes I'm still mad over certain choices and decisions in the show.

9. tattoos?

I currenty have four. I got my latest in January. I have one on the back of my right leg above my heel (it's a marching tatt with my mam), and the rest are on my arms (left forearm, left inner bicep, back of right bicep)

And my sister and I are planning on matching tattoo's next time I'm in Ireland.

10. favorite color?

Green. I love dark greens, and like olive greens.

It used to be blue or red but I love green.

11. favorite type of music?

Honestly.....I sound like an asshole saying this, but I don't have a favourite type.

I will basically listen to every genre, and I have playlists that reflect that. I will mix and match genres. I can go from broadyway to grunge to country to pop to folk music to orchestra's to piano pieces.

12. do you like puzzles?

I love them. I used to get puzzles for Christmas every year and loved spending time doing them.

13. favorite childhood sport?

Swimming was my main one. I even competed on a swim team.

14. do you talk to yourself?

I talk and sing to myself the whole time, especially while living in Prague because I can go a day or two without physically talking to people so I talk to myself.

Tea.

I can only drink iced frappes, and even then I normally irder them without the coffee 😂

I wanted to be an archealogist and then a vet. I was a strange kid.

I’d say 3, which is very basic, but there is a story behind it. When I was little there was this cartoon where the protagonists were numbers and three was the clever one, that also happened to be pink! Best number in the show, so it became my favourite

I’m a student, and unemployed

4. If you could go back to school, would you?

I have been super lucky and always had good experiences in school, or made the best out of the not-so-great ones, so I would absolutely go back

ooh okay told jules that it was scalloped potatoes when they asked so. taking this as an opportunity to name another one. my BASIC potato fave is tater tots for SURE. little slice of heaven right there. perfect addition to any meal, fulfills snacking urge cause they're so bite sized and delightful, they're like hashbrowns but you get a more consistent crispy to soft potato ratio... plus sonic (the restaurant. not the guy) has chili cheese tots that are like. disgusting but in an awesome way. you know. shout out american fast food i love to get chili cheese tater tots and a ridiculous grape slushy with fucking. nerds in it. meal to make your stomach churn but god if it isn't good

didn't look at the numbers you sent before i went to send you one in return and i think i immediately picked this same one 😭 um anyway. freezing is the best option for sure. the thing about burning and drowning is that it gives you time to Panic where if you freeze you could just go to sleep... i have always been a "make it quick" guy when it comes to imagining my own death. very consistent about Not wanting to drown or burn 😭

for the other two though. i think drowning is preferable because it is theoretically less painful. however burning is sexier. my final word on the matter

20 - favorite disney princess movie?

tee heeeeeeee sleeping beauty :3 i am a prince phillip boy and i think aurora's design is just gorgeous and i love the art style of the movie. i didn't actually watch it that often growing up i've only seen it two or three times but i do love it very much... just don't watch movies that often...

in terms of disney princess movies that i Did watch often as a kid cause we had them on vhs. mulan. i think we get the reasoning there skfgjh

Top 5 animated movies?

I see asks like this one for this meme and I'm like "lise what if you just wrote a short and simple response listing movies, then maybe you would actually end up answering all your meme asks" and then my brain goes "nope <3" and I end up with five paragraphs. I'm just not very good at shutting up.

anyway!

1. The Last Unicorn. This is the "no-brainer" one for me because I always feel like this is just...such an important piece of media, and it's one of those things where when I show it to new people I feel very vulnerable about it and kind of go "please understand that in sharing this with you I am showing you my vulnerable underbelly and if you hate it don't tell me." I don't even know that I could articulate why exactly, but it occupies a very particular place in my heart that few other pieces of media can claim to have. I have watched it so many times and here I am going "maybe I should rewatch it today, actually. plug in my external cd drive and pull out the dvd and everything." It's like that.

2. Princess Mononoke. Another one that came to me immediately as I was coming up with this list. I'm pretty sure I watched it a little too young and the opening scene with the boar creature vs. Ashitaka kind of scarred me a little bit but...lord, what a movie. It's beautiful visually and as a story I also love it. I feel like chronologically Spirited Away was my first Studio Ghibli I remember, but this was the one I latched onto. ngl, the fact that there are wolves in it probably helped.

3. Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron. It started to get a little harder here, but then I remember how I felt when I saw a caption referencing a song from this movie's soundtrack (thanks for the bangers, Bryan Adams! unexpected but I'm grateful) and went "!!!!" like my brain was lighting up like a lightbulb. So yeah, I'm going to say this is an important one. You can take the horses away from the horsegirl but you can't take the horsegirl out of the girl. or something like that. And this was one of my horsegirl movies. I also just now remembered the paint by numbers extras that were on the dvd that I was weirdly obsessed with, so that's cool.

4. Watership Down. Actually this one should've been third and I don't know how I forgot it! I joke that the fact that the animated movies I rewatched most as a kid were this one and The Last Unicorn and that probably explains a lot of things, but honestly it might. This movie has a reputation that's in some ways bigger than it deserves (though the destruction of the warren segment is pretty much as awful as everybody says it is), but it is also just legit a really good story and well-adapted into a movie, in my opinion. I watched the remake and was profoundly disappointed mostly because I felt like the animation style was boring, and one thing this movie definitely had going for it was the style.

5. Atlantis: the Lost Empire. I almost went with The Lion King but then I remembered this movie, and, yeah. What a film. Truly everyone who has talked about the brief period where things were very weird and therefore very interesting at Disney were right. Also Helga probably turned me gay (and specifically gay for female villains), I just didn't notice until later.

Honorable mentions to The Lion King, The Rescuers Down Under, and Mulan. And probably several others I'm forgetting that I'll think of as soon as I hit post.

There are definitely the animated movies I want to see, most notably Song of the Sea, because I suspect I would really like them. I am just terminally bad at watching movies, you know.

shout out to The Secret of the Seal though, which was a movie where I sort of thought one of my sisters and I shared a collective hallucination until finally I managed to track it down with something like "seal macaroni penguin animated movie." not to be confused with the 1992 anime film Tottoi, mind you.

...though considering now that I'm looking again all I can find to prove its existence is a cover, I'm beginning to wonder again. The Rotten Tomatoes page I thought was going to take me to it returns a 404 not found.

Anyways, it always has been and always will be common for trans folk to feel seen by gender nonconforming characters, including cis crossdressing characters, that's not going away anytime soon (especially because canon recognition of ACTUALLY trans characters is even still pretty rare and even still not always handled as well as they should be).

Like, as stated before, characters breaking gender norms is a thing, you're free to project on them but dictating that others do in the same ways that you do is annoying.

Been listening to my Disney playlist today and thought I’d list my three favourite songs!

Number 3 is Just Keep Swimming from Finding Nemo! Dory is so funny and this song has such a simple, but important, message. (Plus it reminds me of my best friend!)

Number 2 is Reflection from Mulan! Milan’s one of my favourite Disney Princesses and one of my favourite Disney Movies! This is a beautiful song that really expresses Mulan’s feelings well. I just love it!

Number 1 is obviously When Will My Life Begin (Reprise 2) from Tangled! It’s from such an important moment in my favourite princess’ story! She’s finally left her tower and I feel so happy for her, and this song always reminds me of that happy feeling!

Honourable mention goes to Fly To Your Heart by Selena Gomez! This song was from the Tinkerbell movie, and Tink is my all time favourite and I love her and I love this song! The only reason it’s not on the main list is because it’s not actually currently on my playlist!
