This month, I ran two one-shots for my LotR musical friends of "Hobbits on Horses", a homebrew I hacked together from Kids on Bikes/Brooms! Partially inspired by Folarin Akinmade (Gimli) GMing for the Watermill cast, mostly inspired by me wanting to learn how to GM. We had a lot of fun but I also made my friends cry, which I'm pretty sure is the mark of a successful TTRPG.

Notable moments include:

Session 1:

Merry and Pippin attempting to woo Arwen by pretending to be an elf in a trenchcoat

Overcoming elf/dwarf xenophobia by nerding out about architecture

Bill Ferny is mauled to death by a sentient badger

Every single river has a river spirit, yes including the one under Rivendell

Sneaking the reforged Anduril into the Fellowship's equipment so that Aragorn (Aaron Sidwell) will accept it.

Session 2:

Elrond "doesn't like gardening"

Entwife unsure why Arwen's best friend is giggling when Arwen looks like she's been pulled through a bush backwards and Aragorn won't say anything

Elrohir is Tom Giles in a wig

Grima (imagined as Bridget Lappin) geting hit in the nuts with Bilbo's cane

Boromir attempts to loom over Bilbo falls flat on his face, and swears fealty to the Bagginses

The Rivendell Sex Pollen Clearing tm

It was the first time I've ever Game Mastered, though I've played a bunch of TTRPGs and spent far too many hours watching/listening to other people play them. Many thanks to @dimension20official's Adventuring Academy for a bunch of hints! I had no idea how I would do, and I'm so grateful to this lovely bunch of people for being willing to be guinea pigs for me. It's really strange to have a creative skill that you literally cannot practise by yourself before you have to perform in front of others. By the end of the second one-shot, I was absolutely in love with GMing and I'm really looking forward to doing more!!!

I think there's something very frustrating about how so many activist events, like the haka in the New Zealand parliament, are brushed off as spontaneous acts of passion instead of carefully planned and coordinated efforts. I see it a lot of with indigenous activists especially, and it feels like a lot of people lean on that idea because they like the romantic idea of activism being spontaneous passion but it's incredibly infantalizing to ignore the efforts that these activists and protestors and politicians put into making these things happen, making their voices heard and preparing their communities and allies to stand as a united front when it's time.
