ooh okay told jules that it was scalloped potatoes when they asked so. taking this as an opportunity to name another one. my BASIC potato fave is tater tots for SURE. little slice of heaven right there. perfect addition to any meal, fulfills snacking urge cause they're so bite sized and delightful, they're like hashbrowns but you get a more consistent crispy to soft potato ratio... plus sonic (the restaurant. not the guy) has chili cheese tots that are like. disgusting but in an awesome way. you know. shout out american fast food i love to get chili cheese tater tots and a ridiculous grape slushy with fucking. nerds in it. meal to make your stomach churn but god if it isn't good

didn't look at the numbers you sent before i went to send you one in return and i think i immediately picked this same one 😭 um anyway. freezing is the best option for sure. the thing about burning and drowning is that it gives you time to Panic where if you freeze you could just go to sleep... i have always been a "make it quick" guy when it comes to imagining my own death. very consistent about Not wanting to drown or burn 😭

for the other two though. i think drowning is preferable because it is theoretically less painful. however burning is sexier. my final word on the matter

From the moment Bada arose from her slumber, she sensed that her day would be draining. Usually, waking up before the sun had the chance to peak above the horizon wasn't difficult for her—so many years of doing so had made sleep fatigue all too familiar. However, last night, she stayed awake into the wee hours of the morning, something she typically tried to avoid.

So when her body starts to naturally wake up only a few hours later, she groans loudly into her pillow, squeezing her eyes shut and mentally cursing her past self for staying up so late.

Although all she wants is to stay in bed more than anything, she forces herself to rise from her plush king-sized bed and tosses the warm sheets aside.

Briefly, she turns around to gaze at the spot where she had just been lying when a thought strikes her. You must be asleep in your own bedroom. Curled up in a similar, large bed, a pocket of heat cradling your figure while your chest slowly rises and falls. Your eyes must be tightly shut, eyelashes fluttering as you fight to remain asleep despite the rays of sunlight that will soon begin to peek through your curtains. Your soft lips must be pursed together. Your lips...

Bada wishes you both shared the same bed. She wishes she hadn't been so courteous to buy you a new bed, comfortable sheets, and all the amenities you needed when you first arrived. She wishes instead that you were lying in her bed. She wishes she could wrap her arms around you, and pull you close whilst you slept. She wishes she could foster a beautiful heat between your two bodies. She wishes she could run her fingers across your skin--

Bada shakes her head, sighs loudly, and turns away sharply from her bed. She rubs her eyes as she makes her way over to her dresser, mumbling berating words under her breath for thinking of you in such a way. It's not appropriate and beyond that, those types of thoughts lead to feelings, which she does not--cannot have for you.

Bada's day seems to worsen after dressing herself in her usual attire, a freshly ironed black suit and slacks. The fabric touches her uncomfortably, and still feeling the edges of sleep mar her vision, everything is suddenly bothering her.

But the final nail in the coffin is when Lusher, one of Bebe's most trusted mafia members, walks into her office hours later, carrying a tray of breakfast.

Immediately looking up from the papers in front of her, Bada expects to see your lovely face greet her, but is met with Lusher's cheeky expression instead. She tries not to display her palpable disappointment, but concealing her feelings has never quite been her strong suit. Her mother had told her this many times when she was younger.

"Don't jump out of your seat in excitement, now." Lusher jokes, placing the breakfast tray on the desk.

Bada's lips tighten into a firm, thin line as she stares down at the food, feeling her hunger quickly escape her. "Thanks."

"I know I'm not who you wanted to see, but I can't lie, your disappointment hurts me." Lusher moves a hand to her chest, acting like she'd been wounded.

Bada sighs, shaking her head. "Why isn't she here this morning?"

"Still in bed, apparently." Lusher clasps her hands behind her back. "We found her asleep on the couches late last night. She must have been waiting for you to leave your office so she could wish you a good night, but ended up falling asleep out of exhaustion."

The butterflies that dance in Bada's stomach internally, are a stark contrast to the disapproving expression she wears externally. "I've told her many times not to wait up for me. It's not healthy to be staying up so late."

Lusher sighs dramatically. "You're telling me. How many times have I asked you to head to bed earlier?"

"That's different." Bada denies while picking up her golden ink pen and continuing to write. "I have work to do. Waiting so late into the morning just to wish me a good night is..."

"Sweet? Incredibly kind, and definitely a testament to how endearing your fiancée is?"

Bada clicks her tongue in annoyance. "What are you still doing here? Don't you have something better to do than bothering me?"

"You know there's nothing I like more than bothering you." Lusher shoots back with a sly smile.

Bada tried to continue working, she really did. She attempted to push through filling out papers, even though her wrist was screaming at her to take a break. However, come midday, she was already fed up.

Ruffling her hair and groaning loudly, Bada stands up from her table, the chair she'd been sitting out whining loudly against the floor. She wastes no time in shuffling to the door, grabbing the handle, and pulling it open.

Right when she does, she catches a flash of your figure walking down the hall toward her, your bodyguard only a few paces behind you. As her gaze connected with yours, she felt as if the world transformed, shifting from monochrome sketches to vibrant watercolor paintings

"Oh." You speak first, an easy smile finding your lips. "Good afternoon, Bada."

"Good afternoon." She greets back, trying her damnedest not to sound overjoyed at your presence. "Were you coming to see me?"

"I was." You nod. "I just wanted to let you know I'm planning on going to the mall."

"Are you now?" Bada says absentmindedly, her hand coming up to clutch at her tie and loosen it. The fabric suddenly feels much too tight around her neck.

"Yes..." You trail off, your eyes taking in how Bada's pale and lithe fingers grab at her tie and jostle it around, making it dangle a bit messily across her collarbones. Such a simple action should not be so attractive, no--it shouldn't. It's really ridiculous how easy it is for your fiancée to be so naturally alluring.

"That sounds nice." She hums. "Are you looking to buy something in particular?"

"No, not really." You shake your head. "I'm really just going to look around, and not stay at home all day."

Home. Bada's heart warms at you calling the mansion you both reside in your home. Although it technically is, it's different for you to perceive it as such. It means you feel comfortable here, with her--living with her--

"You should come with me." Your voice brings Bada out of her stupor, her eyes immediately finding yours.

Her mouth opens and closes dumbly, a clear look of shock painted across her face. She tries to quickly gather her bearings, half-heartedly muttering out, "I--I wish I could, but I have a lot of work to do--"

"Bada, all you do is work," you remark, crossing your arms over your chest. She has to force herself not to think about how cute you look doing so. "You deserve to have some downtime. Even if it is only for a few hours."

She stands there, still a bit shell-shocked, staring at you before her eyes shift to the figure behind you, finding your bodyguard, who is trying very hard to conceal her amused smile behind a shaky hand.

Bada's gaze turns icy as she eyes down your bodyguard, prompting the subordinate to immediately turn away and dispel her smile. "All right. I'll come with you."

"Wait, really?" You awe, your eyes going wide and your smile growing. "I didn't think you'd actually say yes."

"Well, you're right. I do need a break. At the rate I'm working at now, I'll never do anything productive by the end of the day." Bada admits with a tired smile. "Are you ready to go, then?"

"Yes." You begin to nod, but your smile slowly turns into a frown. "But you should change into different clothing."

For the second time that day, Bada is left surprised by your boldness. "Change? Why?"

"Don't you want to wear something other than a suit for once?" You ask innocently. "It seems... stuffy to be in it all day."

"Stuffy." She laughs breathily. "I guess you're right." Bada looks between you and your bodyguard. "Will you be all right to wait for me?"

"Of course." You smile.

"Great." She smiles back.

When Bada comes back, she isn't wearing her usual black suit. And although you'd been the one to suggest it, you're not quite ready for how amazing she looks in casual clothing.

A black leather jacket is draped over her shoulders, with slick white lines running down the sleeves and across the chest. She has paired the jacket with matching black leather pants and a black shirt.

In that moment, you want to scream at whatever higher power exists for making your fiancée so unfairly attractive. How were you supposed to act normal around her when her mere presence makes you hot below the collar?

Well, despite your internal struggles you give her a compliment before you're off to the mall, hopping into a sleek black sports car and speed away.

Your first destination in the large mall is a relatively luxurious clothing store. You can't lie; you had wanted to go into the store since you passed it on one of your trips to the mall without Bada, but you were too intimidated to enter. However, now, with her by your side, you feel much more comfortable stepping into the expensive store.

Approaching the door, your bodyguard begins to step forward, about to open the door for you like she always does, but Bada is quicker. She grabs onto the handle and opens the door, stepping aside to make room for you to walk in.

You look at her and smile while mumbling a soft thank you, to which she gives you a small smile back and nods. Your bodyguard begins to walk in after you, but again Bada is faster and enters the store, letting the door swing closed behind her. It almost hits your bodyguard in the face, making her flinch back and sigh.

"Keep a look out from there," Bada tells her sternly through the glass doors.

"Yes, Boss," your bodyguard begrudgingly mumbles back, understanding that this is payback for teasing your fiancée earlier.

Bada turns back around, her eyes easily finding you in the small crowd of people. You're looking around the store with wide eyes, a smile gracing your lips as you observe the embellished clothing around you. She smiles fondly to herself, finding every expression of yours much too cute for your own good.

However, before she can make her way to you, the familiar sound of a voice greets her from behind. Turning around, she finds In-Su, one of her business partners and the owner of the clothing store. Greeting him back, an air of professionalism immediately envelops her as she begins to engage in conversation with him

Meanwhile, you're in your own personal heaven. The clothing you've been browsing is exactly your style, and despite the high prices, you know you can afford it all, thanks to the black credit card Bada had gifted you.

A few minutes later, your hands are already starting to get full as you reach to pull another article of clothing from the rack when you suddenly feel a firm force push into your side, causing you to lose your balance and almost fall to the floor. making you lose your balance and almost fall to the floor. Thankfully, you manage to steady yourself before you do, huffing while turning to your right to see what--or more accurately who--had bumped into you.

"Excuse me." A well-dressed man stands a few feet away from you, his lips forming a snobbish frown.

Despite your irritation, you instinctively apologize. "Oh, sorry--"

"It's fine." He cuts you off, eyeing you up and down. "You should be careful where you stand."

Internally, you scoff at the man, but externally, you only mumble another half-hearted apology before turning away and walking down another aisle.

"Have I seen you before?" The man follows after you.

"I don't think so." You answer back flatly, trying to ignore him and busy yourself by flipping through pairs of jackets.

"I swear I've seen you before. I never forget the face of a beautiful woman."

This time, you're unable to control your expression and outwardly cringe. Is this random man who bumped into you flirting with you right now? After acting so rude?

You say nothing to him in response, choosing to completely ignore him instead.

"You know, when someone compliments you, it's common courtesy to say thank you."

Now you're starting to get increasingly anxious. You don't feel brave enough to confront the man, but he doesn't seem to understand that you're not interested and clearly uncomfortable with his advances.

Taking your silence in offense, the man scowls before grabbing your wrist rather roughly, making you drop all the clothing you'd been holding, and twists you around to face him.

You gasp at his painful hold, attempting to break away from him but unable to due to the sheer strength of his grip. "Let me--" you begin, but the words die in your mouth upon seeing someone standing behind him.

The man, who had been staring you down, notices the shift in your expression and suddenly becomes aware of a very strong presence behind him. He turns around, still gripping your wrist, and comes face to face with a scarily calm Bada Lee.

"Do you need something?" He snaps at her dumbly.

Bada stares down at him with steely eyes, her expression so devoid of emotion you're almost terrified for him. "I believe I should be asking you that question. Is there a reason why you're touching my fiancée?"

The man looks between you and Bada, scoffing disapprovingly. "Tch, she didn't tell me she was engaged."

"Even if she wasn't, in what world would it be appropriate to touch a woman who clearly isn't interested in your pathetic advances like that?" She asks rhetorically, her voice rising with every syllable. Clearly, her anger was getting to her.

The man grits his teeth, feeling his ego bruise because not only is Bada embarrassing him, but she's also easily intimidating him with her presence. "Hey, just who do you think you are?" He raises his voice to match hers.

"I think the real question is," Bada takes a step closer, leaving hardly any space between her and him, "who the fuck do you think you are?"

In that moment, the man's entire demeanor shifts. He turns to look around the store, finding every shopper, worker, and even the store owner staring back at him, eyebrows furrowed, and eyes set into firm glares. Some of them have their hands in their pockets or are grabbing something hidden next to them. His face pales, and looking back at Bada, her face starts to become familiar. He hadn't recognized her out of her normal formal attire, but now--

He gulps, quickly letting go of your wrist like your skin burned him and steps away from you both, his posture shrinking. He starts to make his way toward the exit, attempting to ignore the stares of everyone in the store but is stopped before he can make it out.

"And where do you think you're going?" Bada's hardened voice echoes through the store, making the man freeze in his spot, his entire body going rigid.

Bada's footsteps slowly approach him from behind again and stop just shy of him.

"You made her drop her clothing."

The man turns around, avoiding eye contact with Bada and finding your eyes instead. He's about to mumble an apology when she speaks up again.

"Pick it up." She demands flatly.

The man stays still in his spot, shocked and embarrassed. But clearly, he didn't move fast enough for Bada's liking, because he feels himself get shoved in your direction, almost falling onto his face.

"Do it. Now." She says, her voice bordering on yelling.

Immediately, the man throws himself onto the floor, scrambling to pick up every article of clothing he made you drop. He does so as quickly as possible, then stands up, about to pass you the clothing, when he feels Bada's unwavering gaze bore into him and decides it's in his best interest not to touch you anymore, so he carefully drapes the clothes across your arms.

He turns back to face Bada, approaching her with a cold sweat.

"Hold on." She stops him yet again. "You bumped into her, didn't you?"

"I--" He tries to explain himself but is cut off.

"Apologize."

This time, the man wastes no time in fulfilling her demands. He turns to you, apologizing profusely while shaking like a leaf. You're unable to even think about accepting his apologies before he practically runs to the store doors, throws them open, trying to leave the mall. But as always, Bada is ten steps ahead.

She nods at your bodyguard, who grabs onto the man's suit with little effort, turns him around, and punches him straight in the gut.

Bada then steps in front of you, blocking you from seeing what your bodyguard is doing to the man. Her hands grab the clothing from your arms, relieving you of their weight before slinging them across her right shoulder. She then gently holds your wrist up to her eyes, the ice behind them shifting to a warm and caring glow.

"Does it hurt?" She asks softly.

You feel your body turn to mush at the attention she gives you. "A little."

Bada sighs, leans in, and places her soft lips against your wrist, kissing it with a reverence and sweetness everyone besides you is surprised to see.

It's clear to everyone that the ice around Bada's heart melts only for you.

SVSSS fanfic that I will never write-

LBH post canon accidently goes back in time. How? I don’t know, it isn’t important. If I had to pick a stupid reason, then in PIDW had a storyline where LBH went back in time to a wife’s past to like… learn more about her? To help her in the trauma? IDK but what I do know is that Peerless Cucumber would have ranged for hours about Airplane adding in the concept of time travel and then doing nothing else’s with it.

And guess who the subject of the wife plot is now??? That’s right- SQQ. Except the wife plot took the body and not the soul, and now Binghe is back during SJ’s disciple days.

LBH somehow, as the main character, manages to convince the peak lords of the time that he’s of Qing Jing! He is, really! He really laid on the charm here.

Previous Sect leader: I don’t know if I believe you, but since you look like such a polite young man-

LBH gets escorted away to a room by the head disciple. And who is the head disciple of the sect leader peak??? It’s Yue Qi, sad and depressed and lifeless because LBH managed to find himself in the period of time where YQY thinks SJ is dead!

LBH: I want to meet my young Shizun. Shen Qingqiu- Shen Jiu I think now?

YQY: …. Xiao Jiu is dead?

LBH: Maybe in the future for like five years but not right now!! He’s my super awesome Shizun! …. Do you want to drop everything to go look for him?

YQY: Oh boy, do I!!!

So the two bounce from the sect with no warning, looking Shen Jiu. Luckily, now knowing that he is alive and didn’t die in the fire, it’s pretty easy to follow the line of gossip that follows WY and SJ. And of course, the entire time, LBH is praising his Shizun.

Now, he hasn’t said that he was married to his Shizun. He didn’t want to spoil that just yet! He’ll reveal that to his younger Shizun himself when they find him. But until then, he can still tell YQY how awesome his Shizun is, and how nice, and how close he was to SQH and LQG and even to YQY himself! (That last one was a bit of a fib, of course. SQQ was always a little uncomfortable around the sect leader. But YQY was eating all of this up, being so happy that his childhood friend was so happy and well liked, and well…. It was only a small fib)

They finally catches up with them, and quickly dealing with the other guy, YQY and SJ have a nice reunion, having both think the other was dead! And of course, it was incredibly clear that YQY had been looking for SJ this whole time, which does wonders for his abandonment issues. SJ may yell at YQY for leaving the sect so suddenly and risking everything just for him, but on the inside, he is bursting for joy, trust me.

LBH is not bursting for joy. Like, at all. He had been so excited to see his Shizun but young and now that he’s here…. Something inside of him and screaming that this wasn’t his Shizun.

He had no reason to believe that. This was very clearly SQQ at 14~. But of course, he’s the 200 IQ protagonist and figures it out quickly that his wonderful Shizun/husband took over his body when LBH was 14 and that this was his shitty Shizun that made his early years in the sect awful.

He’s fully ok with that. If his husband needs to possess another man to be with him, than who is LBH to judge? Only the best body for him! The problem is, of course, that he has spent the entire trip over ranting to YQY about how good of a teacher SQQ was to him, and now YQY is excitedly telling everything he said to SJ. LBH can’t just…. Back track now! That would be weird, and if they think that someone will possess SJ later, then what if his husband never shows up??

So he goes along with it. It isn’t hard- he doesn’t hate SJ, not like PIDW him would. He was only under him for three years~ and a lot of what happened to him was still being justified in his head. So it’s just… whatever, to him at that point. He confirms what YQY had been saying, spins a charismatic lie to the sect about why they left and how GREAT SJ will be as a disciple in the future, and then he leaves. Just, fades away in front of everyone.

And now this is SJ’s life. He thinks he’s a good Shizun in the future, even if he can’t stand kids. He think that he becomes friends with SQH and LQG, which is oddly hard to do?? LQG angrily wants to fight him every time he sees him, which is super annoying, and SJ is 88% sure that SQH is talking to demons but, you know. If another version of him managed to become their friend without future knowledge, then he has to do it now! He has a head start on the race here, no way is he losing it!

He does become friends with them, and is still incredibly close to YQY as they grow up. He’s still… him, but his major heart demons- the abandonment by his Qi-Ge and being unsafe even in the sect- aren’t there anymore. He even manages to be an ok Shizun to a young LBH, somehow. He’s pretty sure that he’s sucking at that, btw, because the little brat gets on his nerves when they are in the same room for more than five minutes, but he’s being mostly polite! He had to wonder what the other version of him did to get such a glowing review from the future version of his disciple, because it has to be more than this.

Ironically, because I think it’s funny, this is the timeline that our LBH finds himself back in. The time travel was always meant to be a stable one timeline kinda thing, so anything he changed in the past affected the future. I imagine in PIDW that LBG didn’t do much of anything but maybe comfort his future wife, for Airplane’s fear of making a confusing paradox for himself. But this Binghe? Oh no, he did so much!

Because he saved SJ some heart demons, and helped him make friends despite his trauma, he’s not as prone to Qi divinations! Which means that he didn’t have a fatal one when LBH was 14! Which means when LBH gets back to his time after all of that, he takes one look at his ‘Shizun’ and knows that this isn’t his husband. Which means that his husband never possessed SJ!

He’s horrified, and spends a whole day moping around the peak, trying to think of ways to fix this. He has just gotten himself worked up to go and do something drastic when NYY finds him.

NYY: There you are!! Shen-Shidi has been looking for you all day!

LBH: H-huh?

NYY: Why are you moping around, huh? Did you and Shen-Shidi have a fight? Don’t worry! He’s your husband, I know he’ll forgive you-!

LBH: WHAT.

And that’s how he learns that while he isn’t married to his Shizun in this timeline, he is married to his Shixiong, Shen Yuan! Shen Yuan, who got shoved in Willy nilly when the system realized that SJ wasn’t going to die when he was supposed to.

There’s probably some sequel where LBH has to fake that he has memories of what happened in this timeline, which I imagine is somewhat close to Svsss? The system was still running around, even if a major player has changed. And LBH would just be so bad at faking it in front of two people and two people only- SJ and SY.

SY: Binghe, don’t you remember our first date? :)

LBH: …It wasn’t the water prison!

SY: ….that statement is correct but also the wrong answer.

SJ: Beast, you’re not coming to this Immortal Convenance. Don’t you remember meber what happened last time?

LBH: …. You didn’t push me into the endless abyss?

oh we’re still so young, desperate for attention

this was super experimental so i will talk about my process (+ clearer version) under the cut

i’ve been looking at a lot of “messier” or more textured painting styles recently and an artist that stuck out to me is clariondeluna ! they posted a self-portrait recently that i really liked and i was super interested in the brushwork seen in their work. i love all the textures and how the shapes feel so loose yet everything is so detailed.

that’s not a method for me at all!!!! i cannot paint like that at all and the stuff i like to paint is very different to theirs. which is okay!!!! i had no intention to copy this artists style so closely like with what i tried to do in my raiden painting, i just wanted to try this style out :^)

it’s been a goal of mine to avoid over-rendering like i tend to do a lot, and i think i’ve been doing good with that recently! the mindset i’ve got going on right now is that if i find myself staring at it too hard for too long, i have to leave it and move on. if there’s still something wrong with it, i can fix it later once ive got a fresh view!

i’ve been trying a lot of things with my art this year. i always try to challenge myself with each piece, and to end the year off i wanted to be as uncomfortable as i possibly could be with this painting. i let myself draw whatever i wanted because i still wanted to enjoy it, but everything i did in this process was new, including parts of the subject matter.

i’ve never drawn a head at an angle like this, and i struggle with drawing mouths open. i don’t do bold lighting like this, and if i do, it’s not fire. i’ve never drawn fire! i also rarely work with warm colours and i hate using green, so i combined those to be my colour palette. i like working cleanly so instead of having a dozen different layers for one section, each section only had 1-2 layers for rendering. instead of clipping masks i would simply paint over things loosely and clean it up later. i never like having limbs cut off in a drawing so i had his other arm go GOD knows where. i don’t like weird patterned backgrounds so i made myself figure out how to like it!

IS THIS MY FAVOURITE PIECE OF ALL TIME. no. absolutely not. but i’m very proud of how this came out with all the challenges i put on myself. i WANTED to get better at these things and be more broad with my art, both in terms of the styles and subjects i portray.

for those who don’t know, the design in this painting is my fatui/“Father” lyney fan design (read the design post here). the concept isnt super complicated and i don’t really have much explanation for it, but i wanted to combine the story of how lyney wanted a delusion before getting his vision, fire eating circus acts and how olympic medalists will bite their medal to prove it’s real??? don’t quote me on that i’m like 75% sure that’s a thing that happens. i don’t watch sports though so im just believing someone i heard on the internet ages ago.

I’ve been a huge fan of Glass Scientists for… what’s it been like… 7 years? Something like that.. anyway I’m super happy to see it getting more recognition AND EVEN GETTING PUBLISHED??? I got volume 2 the other day and in reading the after words about Jasper I figured I HAD to draw him and talk about why he is SO important to me and why I’m so thankful he exists the way he does. There’s so much else I could say about this series and how much I adore it and how important it is to me but for here I’m just gonna focus on Jasper and why he is so incredibly important to me.

also please go read the glass scientists if you haven’t already it’s SO GOOD

It’s.. not something I talk a lot about but to anybody who pays attention to me on here, it’s probably pretty obvious that I’m trans. Or maybe not. My best friends didn’t know for like 2 years until I made a joke about taking my t shots lol.

When I first started reading glass scientists I didn’t know I was trans. And ultimately this isn’t really a story of how I found out, to be completely blunt it kinda just happened and I’m like yeah, I’m way more comfortable this way, this is just who I am.

After coming to terms with being trans, I found a lot of comfort in many of the characters in Glass Scientists. Over the years something really resonated with me more and more about Jasper.. I always appreciated how yeah, he’s a guy and he’s also soft! And sweet! And I know how much of a walking talking trans man stereotype I am but it felt so nice to see a male character acting and feeling the way I do, bad posture and all.

A few years later and the pages where Jasper talks about being trans drop and HOOH BOY

Everything in these few pages just felt so real and personal to me. Like I had lived this experience of coming out before, as it’s something I and many other trans folk have had to do over and over again. The way Jasper talks about his journey, the way Rachel sees him and the way that the story just continues on with Jasper just.. being who he is. Especially in a world with almost no transmasc representation in media???? This was MONUMENTAL for me. I didn’t really know it was possible to be so seen and so understood in a piece of media.

The real kicker was Rachel’s line about how Jasper must have been so uncomfortable. As someone who’s been lucky enough to have a lot of support, and a loving partner who has been nothing short of incredibly kind and patient and understanding, that line just. I dunno it makes me tear up a little (a lot) every time I read it. That understanding and acknowledgment in those few little words means the world to me.

I wanted to write this out and be a lil vulnerable here after reading how Sage was worried about their portrayal of Jasper. Idk if they’d ever see this, but I wanted to get it out there that as a trans man myself, Jasper is perfect. I’m so thankful that Jasper exists in the story as he does, and that so much love and care went into portraying him. I get the same feeling reading that scene with Rachel and Jasper as I’ve had being comforted by friends and family. It’s so personal and touching. Thank you for writing Jasper the way he is <3

It’s crazy to me that despite all the jokes that Harrison looks like a human Bill Cipher there is absolutely no fanart (that I have found) of him interacting with any of the Pines.

Yeah there’s art of him with Bill, but the Pine’s family are the ones that have trauma from him and therefore would have the best reaction.

Just imagine them meeting the one kid that not only looks like someone possessed by Bill but also does real honest to god magic and has an affinity for fire!

With how much shit the Pine’s have dealt with it wouldn’t be a stretch for them that Bill came back as a kid. They’d probably assume Harrison was being possessed or something.

Harrison especially looks like Bipper so I’d imagine he’d be especially unsettling to Dipper and Mabel. (Probably gonna draw him and Mabel interacting next)

Dipper immediately being super suspicious of Harrison and doing that stalking thing he does to try and figure him out. Dipper seeing Harrison make a mistake with his magic that makes him not look great and Dipper just freaking out more.

Mabel being uncomfortable with Harrison but trying her hardest to be nice to him because he hasn’t actually done anything yet. Becoming friends when she realizes that Harrison is just a kid and not anything like Bill personality and morality wise.

Harrison enjoyed coloring in that one episode so she could probably get him to do art with her. They’d have so much fun with him showing her his magic tricks, he’d be so happy someone is genuinely interested. His magic would probably improve with the encouragement she would give him.

Mabel being reminded of Bipper whenever Harrison gets a bit arrogant. The thought goes away pretty quickly though cause he usually gets humbled really quickly and just accepts it lol

Ford also immediately being suspicious of Harrison but not doing anything rash yet until he can test him. Losing his shit the first time Harrison does magic in front of him.

Stan giving Harrison the benefit of the doubt but keeping a close eye on him whenever he interacts with one of the twins. Not outright hostile to him but not exactly kind either.

Stan somehow finding out about how Harrison accidentally made his brother disappear and immediately noticing the similarities to what happened with him and Ford. He probably gains a bit of a soft spot for Harrison after and gives him pointers on random things, probably a few pep talks.

Oh also I know it’s just a difference in the two art styles but CC characters tend to have more yellow sclera and oval pupils/irises and it really doesn’t help Harrison’s case lmao

You jump in surprise when Yukimiya speaks and turn around to face him. He picked up a knife from a nearby counter. "Uhm... I'm (Y/N)...?" - "And what are you doing here?" You blink a few times, a little confused at Yukimiya's question. "Didn't you call for me?"

General headcanons

-it took Yukimiya a bit to get used to you, but after two weeks suddenly out of nowhere you became the best friends to ever exist

-but Yukimiya also quickly learned how easy you are to irritate. He always tries his best to keep you in a calm state and tries to make you feel comfortable all the time

-as much as he's curious about your horns, wings and tail, he's too afraid to ask if he can touch them. He's afraid that would make you feel uncomfortable so he doesn't even ask (you'd probably allow him to touch a little, though)

How you fell in love with each other

Although is took Yukimiya a while to get used to you, once he gained complete trust in you, he started falling for you. He always felt a little embarrassed about the fact that he fell for a demon he accidentally manifested, so he didn't confess to you. It took a few months until you started crushing on Yukimiya, but you told him very quickly after realizing what your feelings are. And that's when you started dating!

Bonus drabble (after you started dating)

For a while now, Yukimiya has thought about giving you a special present. He really wants to show you how much he appreciates you staying with him, and he also wants to express his love to you in a special way. Today, he comes home a little later than usually - which already got you worried - because he spent over an hour at the local flower shop, trying to figure out which flowers to buy for you. "Where have you been, it's so la-" You immediately stop talking when you see the flower bouquet in your boyfriend's hands. "For me?-" - "For you."

First meeting

Niko recently started watching an anime about angels and demons, which he finished just now in the middle of the night. He's sad about the anime being over, and at the same time he wishes he'd have an angel friend like the main character. That's why he tries the same summoning ritual like in the first episode, hoping it's going to work in real life as well. And it does! A part of him didn't expect it to actually work, so he jumps in surprise when he sees you for the first time.

General headcanons

-as an angel, you should be the clingier one. But no, it's Niko. And of course you don't mind that at all. You could talk to him for hours and hours and never get tired of it

-at first, Niko was only talking to you about anime. But after a bit he started getting more comfortable so now he talks to you about anything that's on his mind. You're the person he trusts the most

-Niko really loves how fluffy the feathers of your wings are. Even though it's normal, he gets terrified whenever one falls out and one time he even tried to glue it back on your wing

How you fell in love with each other

Niko started crushing on your very early, probably a few days into living with you. But he was always embarrassed about it, so he didn't want to tell you. But he was always blushing and when you asked about that, he had to twll you the truth. But luckily, you already felt the same way.

Bonus drabble (after you started dating)

Niko always appreciated the way you listen to him ramble about anime he likes. But he realized he didn't even know what kind of interests you have. When he finally asked you about it, he was very surprised to find out it's flower language. He secretly did a lot of research on flowers so one day, he surprised you with a special flower bouquet consisting of all sorts of different flowers because he just couldn't decide on only a few. Rae & Warren W: Honestly, I think they'd just be like "gimme the scariest thing you got", they're both pretty daring and adventurous people who are down for just about anything

Robin & Peter M: Frankenstein (it's frahnk-en-steen!) and the Creature from Young Frankenstein, Robin's favorite movie

Madison & Alex: They'd pay extra for all-night makeup service, they've got a plan. Both appear at the party looking completely normal, dressed in fairly plain clothes. Halfway through, they disappear - when they come back, Madison's a little scratched up, Alex has patches of fur and Wolfman claws, and both their clothes are torn. By the end of the party, they both disappear again, and later Madison is found on the floor of the kitchen, covered in blood and gruesome wounds with Bravo (her wolfdog) standing over her looking menacing.

Ophelia & Peter P: Oh, they don't need me. They both show up in intentionally-shitty costumes of the other's hero persona, having independently decided to try and fuck with each other in the exact same way.

Gia & Kate: Assuming Gia would even agree to going to a party in the first place... I could see them going as classic Goosebumps monsters. Gia's the humanoid plant from Stay Out of the Basement, Kate's a scarecrow from They're Alive! Alternatively, I could see them as a genderbent/WLW Seymour and Audrey from Little Shop of Horrors, with Gia's clover mixed in with her prop Twoey (ok ok, that's partially bc it gives Gia an excuse to have her clover with her and fend off a little of that anxiety... but mostly because Gia as a character is based on Seymour originally and I think it's playfully ironic)

Jasper & Kyle: Frank N' Furter and Rocky, of course! Kyle brings a robe since it would get a little uncomfortable to just wear the Speedo the whole time, but he does wear it.... the things people do for love, lol

Kestrel & Warren B: Warren's the only one who needs a costume, Kestrel will just shift into what fits with the theme. And honestly, with that freedom, it could be just about anything. Probably something Indiana Jones-themed, since they're Warren's favorite movies.

Katherine & Ahk: Honestly, Kat would probably just revisit her Bastet costume from that first Halloween party and clean it up a little, and Ahk would wear what he normally wears.

Quinn & Billy: I can't imagine Quinn would want particularly heavy makeup, since she would have to have to deal with removing it all after the party (when she's already tired and in pain from being on her feet). Maybe Morticia and Gomez Addams? That would be fun, and if Quinn wears her platforms she can really make the height difference pop (she's 6'3" without heels, Billy is 5'11"). And of course, Billy's so undeniably smitten he doesn't even need to act the part of Gomez.

Eris & Rick: Hm... tough question. On the one hand, I could see Eris getting really into it, spending weeks putting together the perfect costume only for it to be some historical figure that nobody besides them even really remembers. On the other hand, I could see them being pretty open about it, and willing to follow Rick's lead with whatever costume he decides on - as one of Eris' little hidden gestures of how much they care about him. Sorry this one's a non-answer, I just can't really think of something specific for them.

Nikoletta & Abner: Honestly, I don't know that they're the type for costumes. Neither of them really grew up in an environment where they celebrated Halloween much (save perhaps for Nikoletta being exposed to all the tourists flocking to New Orleans for the holiday), so there's not really nostalgia in dressing up, and they wouldn't be motivated to spend their hard-earned and limited money on costumes or makeup. I could see them agreeing to a group costume (probably at Harley's insistance), but they wouldn't come up with anything on their own.

Jimmy & Lars: Honestly, it would be fun enough just to play up the whole Ghostbusters thing. They're something of local celebrities, but with Lars being more of a behind-the-scenes guy and Jimmy being... well, a ghost that doesn't look like a ghost, everyone just thinks it's a damn good costume until they demonstrate the reality of it. If Lars can get his idea for a painless proton stream worked out in time, he'll make a spectacular show of "catching" Jimmy. If he can't, he'll just make a spectacular show of missing.

Spider (pre-apocalypse, attends alone): Would show up with a detailed sketch of a monster of his own devising, something super creative and super creepy. Hell, he's probably got four-leg stilts and an articulated costume tail of his own, just to add to the effect - he's a film guy, he takes Halloween seriously!

I have now finished "I saw the TV glow" and will leave my thoughts about it because uhh that's why

(obviously spoilers for I saw the TV glow below the cut)

(TLDR: it wasn't what I expected but I still enjoyed it and found the story very interesting)

First of all some general stuff.

I love like most movies A24 produces they're always a joy to watch for me, so I had high hopes and they didn't disappoint. It was obviously very A24 but I think they did a good job with the movie in general.

I enjoyed all the shots and I thought the lighting was super cool and worked very well for the general mood of the movie. Again very A24 but the scenes were set up in a super captivating way.

Didn't expect to see justice Smith as the main character in this, I feel like he's been stalking me since the Quarry but honestly he's a great actor so I'm not complaining. Just didn't see him in any of the promo stuff so I was surprised to see him again lol.

I found the breaking of the fourth wall super interesting. It was a very surprising element to me but it worked super well with the themes and it brought a meta element to the storytelling that was super interesting in context of the rest of the story.

Now onto the stuff everyone actually wants to hear:

I actually thought the storyline was super interesting. It had a very slow buildup and it took a while to get like anywhere but I think that works perfectly with the themes of the movie and where it ends. I understand why this made it rough to watch for some ppl tho.

A lot of that beginning gave a sort of uncertain and almost uncomfortable vibe, which again I think worked great but I understand why someone wouldn't like that. Personally a great buildup to the later story tho.

Now I'll be real, I didn't quite understand the aggressive trans themes everyone was putting on the story until like after they were at the football field and Maggie tried to convince Owen to bury themselves together. Like I understood the story obviously and I got some hints but I didn't get for most of it how it was meant to be so much Abt being trans.

Once it hit it hit tho, like once Owen talked about it and once you were confronted with it more it hit and I think it worked really well and was super interesting.

It definitely wasn't what I expected it to be and that makes it even cooler in my opinion. I was slightly worried it would just be a movie about a trans kid and then they figure themselves out and yippee. A part of me was glad it wasn't that.

Because - and now this goes into the actual theme - but I feel like so rarely there's a point made out of "okay but you will have to kill who you are to become the person you're meant to be". Most of the time in pop culture when there's trans representation it's still "oh this is great and awesome you're gonna become awesome and you're life is gonna be great and nothing will change that you don't want to change" which I get but it's also not really how it works.

I thought it was super refreshing as a theme to talk about how yes sometimes you have to kill the person you have been all your life and it's scary and awful and you obviously don't want that but you have to if you don't want it to forcefully kill you in the future.

Obviously it's in the themes and the subtext and the interpretation and there's gonna be a lot of (especially non queer) people who won't get that from that movie and that's okay. I wouldn't be mad at someone if they didn't pick up on that. But to me it was super interesting and I thought it conveyed a lot.

Now still, and maybe this train will hit in the next hour or tomorrow or whatever, but it didn't make me feel any sort of big emotion. Like for me personally, I have been dealing with this for two years, this isn't a new conflict for me. This isn't some realization of something new that sent me down an emotional spiral. And that's okay but I just didn't sit there crying sobbing like some people said they did.

I thought the ending of the movie was really interesting and gave the viewer a great moment of reflection. I really liked how sudden it was and how cut off it felt. Both in story and with the themes that just worked super well and like I said I feel like that gave an extra push to the viewer emotionally.

Obito will be so surprised that you just don't let them be.

He'll be more excited than you to do all this. He will be asking a lot of questions and to your excitement, you will be happy to answer all of them.

Even if you make a mistake he'll take it down as a "don't" in the little mental list that he is creating.

The next time he'll do it will be when you'll be sitting right next to him. He'll want to show off to you how he paid attention to all of that and is basically an expert now.

But once you tell him that YOU like to do it he will let you know and may even let you in on a few tricks that he figured out himself!

Naruto

At first, he'll be excited about it as well. Just like Obito, he had no clue that this was a THING.

So he'll lie down, bring your all the things you'll need. But as soon as you apply rubbing alcohol to his pimple and it starts to sting he'll sit right up, "YOU NEVER TOLD ME THAT IT WAS GONNA HURT."

You tried to laugh it off and said that this hurts because of the alcohol and only this step hurts.

The poor guy believed you but when you squeezed it, he was in the other corner of the room, "I think it is better if we let it be." with a "YOU LIED" face hahaha it'll be so funny that you won't be able to stop laughing.

Although your puppy face is all he needs to endure all the "Pain". Even though his training hurts like 100X times he'll be so sensitive which will be the funniest thing for you to watch.

Secretly you made a video that you showed to Sakura.

Sasuke

He'll be disgusted right from the start. First of all, he doesn't even touch it why would he let YOU touch it?

But after you gnaw at him for HOURS he will let you do it.

Still, be very disgusted the entire time.

Once it is all done and you asked him to take a look in the mirror he denied it and went on with the day to get rid of all the weird feelings that process gave him.

But when he'll see the mirror later he'll be a little impressed and might ask you to do it again depending on how bad it is. If it is too bad he'll NEVER in the world would let you touch it. Not because he is insecure or anything but he just hates the entire idea.

Neji

Just like Sasuke, he'll be against the whole idea.

But unline Sasuke he WILL BE insecure about it which is why he is insecure about it.

What if you came closer and realized how bad it actually is. Because let's be honest, Neji is the sort of guy who must be very hygienic and cautious about his looks even if he doesn't show it but I can imagine that he does a lot.

So the fact that you even noticed that he has a pimple made him a bit insecure.

But once you said, "What is wrong with it, you too have them and it is better to get rid of them rather than them leaving a mark later." He was a little convinced.

But was asking you to be very careful while doing everything.

Shino

He won't be against it but might feel a bit uncomfortable because after the whole process is done he cannot let his insects touch it.

He never stops them from anything but this was a bit odd for him.

He will be his quiet self as you start but just like Naruto, he'll jump out of his place as soon as it stings.

"You said it won't hurt." he'd say without sounding angry even though he is a bit caught off guard.

He'll still agree to do it since you want him to. But would complain a lot like a baby.

for context, keita/raze (he/him) is my irl partner. he's been a simp for alucard (castlevania) longer than i've begun simping for strahd. i only discovered this years into the relationship when we watched castlevania (where i expected to be a bigger simp for castlevania), and instead HE made high pitch simping noises as alucard appeared on the screen and i was like -sus eyes- wait a GOSH DARN MINUTE-. also, keita has a thing for necks. i shrugged it off when he first told me, but years later i started simping for strahd and now i look back at that moment like 'hm. odd.-'. anyways, i mostly started dating him because he sounds like a kermit the frog southern guy who goes 'howdy howdy' and he says 'i should be golden' unironically and i think thats pretty funny

From one vampire to another, you both are quite literally made for each other in that regard. He sees you and he can feel warmth flooding through his ice cold veins, how the moonlight illuminates your figure makes you look just ethereal. He is stunned into silence but soon regains himself and Ritsu can't help but to approach you.

Now given his sleeping patterns, it is a little hard for the both of you to meet up for any kind of outings, these would mostly be happening later in the evening and into the night given his aversion to sunlight, but he manages to work his schedule just right between his unit work and when he sleeps. He will always make time for you.

Another cat lover! Perhaps the both of you would like to go to a cat cafe for one of your dates? It would be something that he would find both enjoyable and relaxing, especially if you get to be there with him.

His schedule is quite busy sometimes given the work he has with his unit, Knights, but if you would like, you could always join him when they have practices and lives. Honestly, the thought of you being in the crowd and cheering him on makes this young vampire smile.

Speaking of his unit, the others absolutely adore you and they protect their own, and given that they now see you as one of their own, they will protect you just as you protect Ritsu. It is what a Knight does, after all.

Ritsu is big on giving you those words of affirmation. He may not be too much of a talker, and he really isn't that down on himself, but he would never want you to be down on yourself. He wants you to know that he is committed to this relationship no matter what it takes.

Overall, two vampires are able to join each other under the light of the moon. It is something that he will always love. With your similar interests and hobbies, it just makes the time that you spend with one another so much better and so much sweeter.

What got you into writing fanfic in the first place?

I have been writing fanfic since before I was even old enough to know what it really was. I was always day dreaming and drawing pictures inserting my own characters into my favorite stories, or forcing my favorite characters into my own situations (my mother used to transcribe the adventures of various Disney princess for me lol) the first *real* fanfiction I remember writing was in 5th grade for the book Eragon. My childhood best friend and I had a red spiral bound notebook that we passed back and forth and wrote our fic in. In terms of The 1975- I've been a fan of theirs since the Robbers music video started showing up on my Tumblr dash back in like 2014? (I couldn't figure out who I wanted to be more... Matty or the Robbers girl and years later I still in fact do not have an answer for that one lol) And I realized they were the same band that sang the song Chocolate. However, I didn't start posting my writing for them until last year when I was Going Through It™️ and my Bestie encouraged me to use it as an outlet (sorry Fictional!Matty! that's why your life sucks!)

2. What boundaries would you not cross as a writer regarding content?

I don't think I've actually killed off any *main* character or public figure yet and I can't actually see myself doing that? At least in something that I post for public consumption? Honestly that could change though. I don't really have any boundaries I'm not willing to cross because I am a firm believer that fanfiction is still considered art and art is supposed to make someone feel something and even make them uncomfortable. I actually have a fic that I've been working on that I'm hesitant to share because I'm not sure boundaries exist and I don't want to offend anyone (again) 😂

3. Has a fic ever made you cry? And if so, what was it about that fic?

This question isn't fair. I am a cryer, everything makes me cry. I started crying the other day because I love my horse so much (he's totally fine he was just looking super cute and was all happy I brought him carrots.) So yes, lots of fics have made me cry. Anything that I read that I can tell the author poured their heart into writing is honestly going to make me at least tear up and I am not ashamed to admit it. That's why I don't wear mascara on my lower lashes and only wear waterproof eyeliner 😂

4. How do you feel about abandoning fics?

I've only officially done it once, for a Hockey RPF fic that I just, wasn't enjoying working on. Everything else is just on "Hiatus" until I remember it exists again even if it takes years. I don't consider myself a quitter and abandoning a fic that I've started posting kind of breaks my soul. HOWEVER I do have a folder on my Google Drive that's just a graveyard of abandoned and half finished fics that I never posted that I go and visit sometimes.

5. Are there any novel authors you like that have influenced your writing style?

Yes! For sure 100%. However, I am currently sitting here going "I have never read a book before in my life" which is obviously a bold face lie you should see my GoodReads page but not really because there is a ton of my real life personal information on it lol Even though he's not (technically) a novelist (even though he did write a book!) can I say Pete Wentz? He's probably one of the writers I look up to the most. The way he bends words to pen lyrics just... scratch an itch in my brain and I hope I can one day make someone feel the way Fall Out Boy lyrics make me feel and I 100% feel like the flowery way he writes has influenced my to some capacity.

i rant about resident evil and their writing / inclusion of the girls.

i jsut want 2 girls to go on their fucked up little adventures together is that too much to ask

i finally got to the halfway point of code veronica X and GODDDD i fucking knew they were gonna do this goddamn shit w/ steve and claire. i knew from the goddamn beginning even if i didnt want to admoit it...... residetn evil just cant be normal w/ a girl being paired w/ a guy. they just fucking cant

i understand that this is seen more among the older games (ashley + leon from re4 as well) and i cant speak for the og re3 nemesis but the way they wrote carlos and jill? its just.... why make these male characters say such bizarre and degrading and just ? nasty comments towards the female protag? do you really expecvt us to root for them? i just dont fcuking undeerstand, and this occurs in a remake too! they didnt bother to maybe just maaaybe take that bulllshit out. because jill's uncomfortable. IM uncomfortable. its just. godddd who the fuck caaaares STOP THIS TROPE

you see this same thing w/ steve and claire.... not oonly is steve incredibly fucking annoying the first second we meet him, he also continually acts as a nuisance towards her for a good quarter of the game. yeah sure theyre just building up to the Ground Breaking Emo backstory drop later, but. you already made me fucking hate this loser so goddamn much meaning im not gonna give a single shit about his development later. maybe its thr lesbian in me popping out maybe its the aromantic in me popping out WHO KNOWS all i know is that. resident evil makes me very upset sometimes dflkgnjg i love the games i love the characters (esp the girls big surprise i know) but jesus christ. somethings i just can't ignore. and this is cerrtainly one of them. a girl just can't exist out of a guy according to capcom. and that sort of idea is suuuper evident in how they portray and include their women. you could have a girl protag (re3, recv etc) but theres always a 99% chance theres gonna be a man tagging along + continually saving their asses and theres almost alwaysa an even HIGHER chance that theyre meant to be seen as a romantic interest! and its exhausting@!!!!!

long story short . i get im not resident evil's target audience . but im still gonna be pissed and annoyed . the girls deserve better .

im def gonna have to go more in depth abt resident evil and their writing of relationships (or lack thereof) some other time but just for now. the best written ones are claire + sherry and mia + ethan goodbye

Maybe a minor problem with fire force is that Shinras whole shtick of "wow this sensitive traumatised kid looks like a monster when nervous" kinda turned out in a way that his design balanced it out and turned into a generic "kinda cool- kinda everyman" shonen protagonist design. Maybe it should have went all in either being really creepy and devil like or really like a woobie that people could attach themselves too like Crona or something. Idk

I'll say more about Shinra in reply to another ask, too, as well as in something else I want to discuss (regarding "how did almost everyone but Arthur fail to recognize something was wrong with Shinra when he was not in his own body").

And spoiler warning for the ending of Fire Force.

I like Shinra, personally.

But I do wish there was more done with his character.

Some of this owes to the complexities of representing boys and men in popular media--a refusal to let them cry or show sadness in other ways. It's not as if Shinra doesn't cry--but it's mostly when he first sees his mom's house burn down and assumes his family is dead. It's not as if other boys and men in the series don't cry--Sho cries, but, again, he is pretty young, looks so much like a child, that this all felt uncomfortable to me, as if there was this insistence that boys' and men's sadness is not shown or shown in violence ways.

For example, Akitaru dies. That is Shinra's commander and (what should have been done more clearly) father figure dying. Shinra has shown vulnerability, sadness, and other emotions that boys and men still are expected not to show. But instead of even having Shinra having tears of anger, he just leaps into straight-up screaming homicidal anger that damns the world to burn, solidifying the White Clan's goals and spelling doom for everyone, playing right into the Evangelist's hands.

This should be Shinra having a wave of complex emotions that all contribute to his screwing up. But the choice made to represent this is just typical: loud scream, head up to the sky, no tears, world burns, the end. But Ohkubo sticks to something that looks only like mindless rage.

Don't get me wrong, just because you don't cry doesn't somehow mean you are not sad or not showing emotions properly or not mourning properly. I struggle with how I react to sadness or happiness, so when I am super sad but not crying, or super happy but not smiling, doesn't negate what I feel: that varies across people.

But as a visual medium, comics do have to show emotions in ways that are traditionally understand to demonstrate an emotion. It's why it's easy for a lot of us to post a crying emoji to represent what we feel, even if our words or our expressions or the very fact that we are not crying don't do as well to convey that sadness.

So, with all of my rambling there out of the way, yeah, we want to understand Shinra is traumatized, we want to understand he has dealt with setback after setback--but something feels missing to connect that to his sensitivity. He doesn't come across as easily in the canonical works as sensitive; he comes across as a generic shonen protagonist. Even Naruto cried when he read Jiraiya's writing. Where are those quieter moments to show the pressure of losing his family, being a social pariah, being wrongly accused of murder, being in a line of work where he has to put people down, almost killing his own teammates, seeing teammates get injured or even die for his sake--where is all of that affecting him? It feels like the story elides past this and doesn't want to dwell on it.

(It's why, as I'll write in a separate post later, there is an arc missing in this story: the time when Shinra was not there. Spoilers, but Shinra loses his body and has his doppelganger occupying it--and we never see it. We have a timeskip--one of the most abused and laziest forms of serialized writing--to tell us Shinra was acting different, but only Arthur noticed; no one intervenes because they mistake this for teenage rebellion--yet again reinforcing this toxic masculine bullshit that fails to see what Shinra has felt and undermines just how well his supposed found-family in the 8th just fails at understanding him; he has his body changed against his will, even if it's just tattoos, because, again, Vulcan doesn't even figure out something is different about Shinra; and his doppelganger attacks Iris--but somehow everyone just immediately accepts the real story once Shinra is back, with little time spent to show them processing how they failed to see what was wrong with Shinra, that even if it wasn't him it was still an impersonator who attacked Iris and almost hurt them, and that Shinra has yet again gone through a violation and a trauma.)

You know who did Shinra's story better? Kazue Kato. I've joked enough about how Shinra is just Rin Okumura from Blue Exorcist: family traumas, brother problems, guilt, shame, aggression but also sadness, fire abilities, supernatural or even divine origins, devil motifs, a boy who launches a thousand ships, clueless about girls, same teeth, same face, you can't spell "Shinra" without "Rin." When you say "generic 'kinda cool - kinda everyman' shonen protagonist design," it's Rin, that is who Shinra is.

And it worked with Blue Exorcist because Rin is full of contrasts: super violent but also sensitive, someone who gets into fights but because he has grown into a bully-fighter, book dumb but really good at what he's into, a brawler but also a cook, angry but also emotionally devastated and sad and oh look actually crying.

But that same potential in contrasts, while present in Shinra--the hero but who looks like a devil--doesn't work out as well as Rin because, as I just said, the work is not put in. It feels like Ohkubo starts with that neat idea, "the hero but who looks like the devil," and waits until the very last chapter to make Shinra look like the Devil himself.

It's the same problem I have with Shinra's mother, Mari: these are two characters who undergo significant changes to their bodies...and it gets swept under the rug. That should make me feel good, about a story that accepts these characters for how they look. However, you put Shinra and Mari into a story where we established this world is so not accepting of people who look weird. Arthur is ostracized; Tamaki is a pariah; Shinra is a victim of rumors and lies. The moment Shinra looks like a devil should have been the world turning on him, to (wrongly) believe that your exterior matches your interior (and to contribute to Ohkubo's "it doesn't matter the shape or form, only the soul that matters" message to set up Fire Force as a Soul Eater prequel--and he couldn't even do that right!).

Instead, Shinra reverts to his old form, Mari is surprisingly cool about being in a new form, the world accepts how Huang, Burns, and others look different...except they still look weirdly at Huang and Burns, and now Shinra and others are hunting "monsters" who are lashing out (so maybe in part because now look different because of a change of appearance forced onto them by Shinra's poorly done global rebooting?), so, again, mixed message.

I'm not saying making Shinra a woobie like Crona would help because, again, if you do reduce a character so that their outside and inside match, e.g. "Shinra is sad inside, so just make him look like a socially anxious sad person on the outside," it oversimplifies matters, as well as acts like even "normal-looking" people don't also have depression and trauma. But something was needed to give Shinra a boost in design, and it wasn't there.

Granted, I don't think it was there for most characters in Fire Force: we get characters in practically the same uniform due to the firefighter/military aesthetic, ignoring that this is a fantasy world where you can still create variations in designs. Star Trek did with the Federation. Hell, Soul Eater did, the DWMA in NOT having a uniform policy...before immediately revealing that the uniform rule is not enforced. Fire Force wanted so badly to be the antithesis to Soul Eater--few variations in designs, almost no variations in costumes--but it did so by looking so boring: we needed a 7-foot-tall Stein, we needed a Flying Dutchman, we just needed characters who looked like nothing in our world...and we didn't get it, all so Ohkubo could again troll the audience by saying, "LOL I made it look boring so that it could be a prequel to Soul Eater." I sat through this many chapters just to get a boring prequel? WTF?
