UPDATE: Playlist Extension: Helluva Playlist
That was an interesting break from the hiatus… two episodes almost in a row followed by another hiatus. So I might as well take this opportunity to add my new playlist extension. These will all follow the end of “Tell the World” from the previous list. I’ll wait to decide whether to make Season 2 into one or two sections depending on how many more songs come in.

Major Update!?
For anyone who has been here since the beginning (or archive-binged), there have been two playlists in Canon Companions that haven't quite followed the rules set by the others, those being The Comprehensive Simpsons Mix Collection, which is a compilation of mixes that vaguely connect to a selection of mostly secondary characters, and Sonic Songs, which is made up entirely of official songs (which all of the others specifically exclude). As the Canon Companions selection grows, (along with Supplemental Scraps, which I may discuss in future posts. PJ's Appendix is an example I've mentioned before), and Soundtrack Playlists become more of their own thing, I've thought about completely replacing Sonic Songs and The Comprehensive Simpsons Mix Collection with brand new Canon Companions for those works. I haven't started yet, so there are no promises (hence the ? in the title), but hopefully I can make more cohesive Canon Companions.
Proposed changes:
Make a new Canon Companion for Sonic the Hedgehog that will be entirely separate from the current Sonic Songs. Move the current Sonic Songs to a separate soundtrack playlist. Create a supplemental scrap combining the two.
Make a new Canon Companion for the Simpsons that will share some key songs with The Comprehensive Simpsons Mix Collection but in a different order and with new songs for previously unrepresented characters, locations, relationships, etc. and removing a lot of redundant or tenuously-connected songs. Move the old Comprehensive Simpsons Mix Collection to supplemental scraps, and create another that combined the two along with official Simpsons music.
Things such as songs by artist and duplicates will change without necessarily getting bigger.
Once these have been created, they will get new playlist posts.

The Best of Canon Companions Tracks 265-275
[Warning: This post contains major spoilers for Harry Potter, Fire Emblem 7, Firefly, Fire Emblem Tellius Series, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Grimm, and Zootopia]
1. “My Immortal” by Evanescence
Works represented: Harry Potter; Fire Emblem 7; Firefly Characters represented: Snape to Lily; Matthew to Leila; Zoe to Wash
In every case the song is being sung by a character who lost a significant other (or unreciprocated crush) to a premature death, and it’s hugely relevant in every case. It’s a beautiful song, it’s applied to several important plot points, and it’s about at least three of my favorite characters.
2. “Do or Die” by Papa Roach
Works represented: Fire Emblem Tellius Series; Harry Potter; Buffy the Vampire Slayer Characters represented: Soren about Ike; Harry about Sirius; Buffy about Angel
In every case, this powerful song is used to explore the relationship between two characters where one truly respects the other, but either loses him, temporarily or permanently, or sees him become sadder. It’s most relevant in the case of Fire Emblem Tellius because it’s so apt in details, while in the others there are a few mistakes. It’s about my two favorite characters in my favorite work/game.
3. “E.G.G.M.A.N” by Paul Shortino
Works represented: Sonic the Hedgehog Characters represented: Dr. Eggman
Character aside, this song easily took high points in every other category because Sonic is a work I love and Sonic Adventure 2 is my favorite, it’s plot-important as the main villain song and relevant because it’s about as expository as most Sonic Heroes songs, and it’s just a fantastic song in its own right.
4. “The Chosen One” by A2
Works represented: El Goonish Shive; Harry Potter; Tales of Symphonia; Fire Emblem 7; Sonic the Hedgehog; Buffy the Vampire Slayer Characters represented: Grace; Harry; Colette; Lyn; Shadow; Buffy
This song had a major advantage, being the sole song on six playlists, but that alone wouldn’t have gotten it on. Yes, it was helped by being about two or three of my favorite works and two of my favorite characters, and by being a really good song, but the main reasons it made it as far as it did is because it did a good job of exploring the pain of being a chosen one, which is applicable for at least five of the six, and being extremely plot important for at least four of the six--one of which, ironically, is not the one that it’s canonically used for.
5. “False Pretense” by Red Jumpsuit Apparatus
Works represented: Grimm; Zootopia Characters represented: Nick to Renard; Judy Hopps to Bellwether
In both cases, these songs are narrated by a character who saw an ally go to an arch-enemy with almost no transition, with the latter character being a successful liar. It’s a great song about a climactic moment in two awesome works.
6. “Playing God” by Paramore
Works represented: Total Drama; Goof Troop Universe Characters represented: Samey/Sammy (to Amy); PJ to Pete
In both cases the narrator is a mistreated character who is attempting to call out their abuser for not only being mean, but also acting hypocritical and smug about it. It’s a perfect song for a wonderful character from each of two great shows, including my favorite character of all time.
7. “Me Against the World” by Simple Plan
Works represented: Fire Emblem Tellius Series Characters represented: Soren
This is a very apt description to Soren’s introduction--where even though he does the best he can to help the mercenaries, he gets considered “a nightmare, a disaster, a lost cause not a hero” but he’ll never let their opinions of him stop him from speaking his own. I love Soren as well as the series he’s from and the song, and, as a main theme for a deuteragonist, it’s plot-important too.
8. “If Only” by Hoobastank
Works represented: Harry Potter; Zootopia Characters represented: Slughorn to Harry; Judy Hopps to Nick Wilde
It’s not terribly irrelevant to Harry Potter, though it is once again extremely lopsided, since Zootopia is responsible for the song being only three songs from the end of The Best of Canon Companions: Judy Hopps apologizes to Nick Wilde and mentions that she was ignorant and small-minded, hoping for Nick’s forgiveness but understanding if he won’t give it. Yes, it’s also for one of the most climactic scenes in the film. Yes it’s also about my favorite animated work/movie. Yes I love the characters from it too. Yes, it being a good song and somewhat relevant to Harry Potter probably wouldn’t have made it on on their own.
9. “Hopeless Case” by Less than Jake
Works represented: Fire Emblem Tellius Series Characters represented: Soren to Ike
This song describes Soren’s feelings in the first support conversation with Ike, where Ike calls him sensitive and Soren is taken aback because there’s so many things wrong with him and Ike “[doesn’t] see [him] that way”. It’s a sweet beautiful song for my favorite pair of my favorite two characters in my favorite game/work.
10. “You’re Not Alone” by James Durbin
Works represented: Fire Emblem Tellius Series Characters represented: Ike to Soren
Yes, that is two in the top three related to Ike and Soren. In particular this one is about how Ike wants Soren to know that, no matter what may have happened in the past, he will always be there for him with love and care. The fact that a hug is offered in the song is also pertinent. It’s climactic, it’s a beautiful song, and it’s about my favorite two characters in my favorite game/work.
11. “Taking Over Me” by Evanescence
Works represented: Fire Emblem Tellius Series Characters represented: Soren to Ike
This song is the last song on the list for good reason. It does make three in the top three related to Ike and Soren, which, considering the order was only on relevance, seems to be a (cool) coincidence. But this particular song is the only song that sounds SO uncannily like it was written by the character or at least for the character, that it’s almost hard to believe the song came out a year before the first game. The plot of the song is: the narrator loves someone, who doesn’t remember them, but they would still “give up everything just to find” them, and remembers when they met and, after given a hand knows they love them too. Bonus points for being a gothic metal song. And it’s climactic, and about my two favorite characters from my favorite work, and a great song I never get tired of hearing. Truly the very Best of Canon Companions

The Best of Canon Companions Tracks 254-264
[Warning: This post contains major spoilers for Fire Emblem Tellius Series, Mansfield Park, Tales of Symphonia, and Fire Emblem Awakening]
1. "Nobody's Home" by Avril Lavigne Works represented: El Goonish Shive; Tales of Symphonia; Fruits Basket Characters represented: Ellen; Presea; Tohru While this song made it high in work because it represents El Goonish Shive, and it's a fantastic song regardless, both the eerie relevance and the prominent plot-importance (as well as the character points) came mainly from Tales of Symphonia. Not only do the emotions demonstrate Presea's position perfectly, but "she wants to go home, but nobody's home" is a very good description of her character arc. 2. "Predictable" by Good Charlotte Works represented: Mansfield Park Characters represented: Edmund to Mary This song represents the point where Edmund realizes that Mary has been using him, which Fanny tried to warn him about but he brushed off. It's an apt descriptor in both diction and tone, and the fact that it's about my favorite character in one of my favorite books as well as one of the best songs on the album it's from, puts it high on the list. 3. "Hopeless Bleak Despair" by They Might Be Giants Works represented: Fire Emblem Tellius Series Characters represented: Sephiran In this song Sephiran (really, Lehran) reflects on his life and how miserable he was throughout it, but after his near death experience and, many centuries in the future, he's feeling much better. This is surprisingly literally apt for a They Might Be Giants song which is why it's as late as it is. Even though Sephiran isn't one of my favorite characters, this is a hugely plot-important song, very good, and about my favorite game/work. 4. "Not Listening" by Papa Roach Works represented: Zootopia Characters represented: Chief Bogo This song demonstrates toughness, resolve, stubbornness, and protectiveness--all key traits of Chief Bogo. The song is apt in both diction and tone, and the fact that it's about Chief Bogo, one of the important characters as well as my close second-favorite, and my favorite animated work/movie, makes it even better. 5. "You Found Me" by Kelly Clarkson Works represented: Fire Emblem Tellius Series; El Goonish Shive Characters represented: Elincia to Ike; Justin to Elliot In both cases, the song is more-or-less literally relevant: Ike found Elincia on the side of the road, and Elliot found Justin being beaten by bullies. It's also about two of my favorite works, very plot-important in both cases, about two of my favorite characters on one side and one of them on the other, and a great song. 6. "My Way" by 3 Doors Down Works represented: Zootopia Characters represented: Judy Hopps to Chief Bogo and Chief Bogo to Judy Hopps This song represents the huge fight that Judy and Bogo have that results in Judy almost being fired, but culminates in Judy being given 48 hours to solve the case. It's relevant to both of their positions as well as their mutual stubbornness. It's also a great song about some of my favorite characters in my favorite animated work/movie. 7. "For the Sake of Revenge" by Sonata Arctica Works represented: Fire Emblem Tellius Series; Harry Potter Characters represented: Naesala to Skrimir; Sirius to Snape
This song is being narrated in both cases by someone who is being treated as an unforgivable murderer by another party who earnestly believes it to be the truth, but the narrator attempts, knowingly in vain, to explain that it's a misunderstanding: in the former case because of mitigating circumstances, and in the latter because of a blatant false accusation. In addition to being relevant and plot-important, it's also about some great characters, my favorite game/work, and a great song. 8. "The Dead Skin" by Sonata Arctica Works represented: Tales of Symphonia Characters represented: Kratos to Lloyd This song does a surprisingly apt job at describing Kratos's feelings about Lloyd and himself in the moment where he demands that Lloyd kill him. In addition to being both crucial and relevant, it's also beautiful and about one of my favorite characters. 9. "Perfect" by Simple Plan Works represented: Penny and Aggie/QUILTBAG; Goof Troop Universe Characters represented: Michelle to her dad; PJ to Pete Yet another lopsided duplicate, this time Penny and Aggie's side wouldn't be enough to make it onto the Best of Canon Companions at all, but Goof Troop's has an extremely apt song, both in content and in tone, which is not only great, but also very plot-important, about my favorite character, period, and about one of my favorite works. 10. "Slipped Away" by Avril Lavigne Works represented: Fire Emblem Tellius Series Characters represented: Jill to Shiharam This sweet, heartbreaking song is used to aptly describe Jill's feelings of sorrow after her father was made to be killed in battle. I love the song as well as the work that it represents, and it's a key plot point too. 11. "2 Minutes to Midnight" by Iron Maiden Works represented: Fire Emblem Tellius Series; Harry Potter; Fire Emblem Awakening Characters represented: Ashera; Basilisk; Grima In every case a larger threat of death is looming over the environment, but nobody really knows what's going on or how to stop it. It's hugely plot-important in at least two cases, which is perfect for a six minute heavy metal song alluding to a doomsday clock, it's a great song, and it's about some of my favorite works.

The Best of Canon Companions Tracks 243-253
[Warning: This post contains major spoilers for the Fire Emblem Tellius Series and Tales of Symphonia]
1. "Armatage Shanks" by Green Day Works represented: Fire Emblem Tellius Series Characters represented: Soren to Ike This is a nice catchy song that works aptly to describe Soren who "must insist of being a pessimist" admitting to Ike that he is "branded" and "never trusted anyone, let alone" himself. It's also plot-important and about the best characters in my favorite game/work. 2. "They" by Jem Works represented: Fire Emblem Tellius Series; Lord of the Flies Characters represented: Yune; Ralph In both cases, the society's rules are being questioned by a spirit who does not agree with them. In one case, it's a larger society questioned by an isolated goddess; in the other, a naysayer in a smaller group. I love the song and both works, of which this song is key to the development. 3. "Wild Horses" by Natasha Bedingfield Works represented: Fire Emblem Tellius Series; Harvest Moon More Friends of Mineral Town Characters represented: Astrid; Claire In both cases the narrator is a free spirit who feels trapped and isolated by her big city life and would rather things be much simpler, bonus points for Claire because of the horse imagery. It's about two of my favorite video games and a gorgeous song. 4. "Everything You Want" by Vertical Horizon Works represented: The Simpsons; How I Met Your Mother Characters represented: Smithers to Mr. Burns; Ted to Robin In both cases, this song is sung by a guy pining for the heart of someone that he does all sorts of great things for, but still doesn't have his affections reciprocated. It's a really good song, as well as being applied to two of my favorite characters, and plot-important to one of the shows. 5. "The Wedding March" by Mendelssohn Works represented: Harvest Moon More Friends of Mineral Town Characters represented: Claire and the marriage candidates This song deserves remarkable acclaim for not only being the only instrumental to make it onto the best of Canon Companions, but for making it this high in relevance. Since it's well-known wedding music, it works very well for a generic marriage event. Also, it's beautiful and here applied to the key event in one of my favorite games. 6. "I Push Her Buttons" by Honest Bob and the Factory-to-Dealer Incentives Works represented: Fire Emblem Tellius Series; Harry Potter; The Simpsons; Goof Troop Universe Characters represented: Geoffrey about Elincia; Ron about Hermione; Homer about Marge; Goofy about Sylvia In every case the song is sung by a guy who you wouldn't have expected to luck out like he did, but does. In at least three cases, he's also kind and caring. The song is really sweet, two of the characters narrating and two of the characters being sung about are among my favorites, and it represents key couples in four works, of which two are among my absolute favorites. 7. "True Colors" by Cyndi Lauper Works represented: El Goonish Shive; Zootopia; Fruits Basket Characters represented: Grace to Tedd; Clawhauser to Chief Bogo; Tohru to Hatori In each case, the character narrating learns a shameful secret about their addressee, but actually, not only doesn't mind it, but likes it, thus telling them that it's okay to let it show. It's most relevant in El Goonish Shive and least in Fruits Basket, most plot-important in Fruits Basket and least in Zootopia. Zootopia and El Goonish Shive also gave it a work boost, and the former gave it not one but two character boosts. 8. "You're Gonna Go Far Kid" by the Offspring Works represented: Fire Emblem Tellius Series Characters represented: Shinon to Rolf This song is ridiculously apt for describing Shinon's teaching methods to Rolf, in both diction and tone. Even though I don't particularly care for Shinon, I love the song and the game that he's from enough that it hardly even matters here. 9. "Guard My Heart" by Bowling for Soup Works represented: Tales of Symphonia Characters represented: Lloyd to Kratos and Kratos to Lloyd This song represents the part of the game where Lloyd wants Kratos to be an ally, but Kratos is still too loyal to Mithos to switch sides. Meanwhile, Kratos also wants to help Lloyd but is conflicted because he's still loyal to Mithos. Lloyd's understanding nature is explored well in the second verse, his feelings of disappointment in the first, and Kratos' perspective in the third. It's a beautiful song and about great characters. 10. "Hold Me" by Weezer Works represented: Fire Emblem Tellius Series Characters represented: Soren to Ike This is for the final moment in the special info scene where Soren finally succumbs and lets Ike hug him, crying in his arms and letting out all his vulnerabilities. All the vulnerabilities are clear in the lyrics, and this is a really good song for a really great character in a climactic scene from a really awesome game. 11. "Forsaken" by Dream Theater Works represented: Fire Emblem Tellius Series Characters represented: Ashera about Sephiran
This song has some eerily apt imagery but there's a little bit of gender confusion. Regardless, the song works really nicely as the song for the moment when Ashera awakens. Not only is that moment plot important, but this is a fantastic song about a fantastic game.

The Best of Canon Companions Tracks 232-242
[Warning: This post contains major spoilers for the Mansfield Park, Fire Emblem Tellius Series, Fire Emblem 7, Zootopia, One Flew Over the Cuckoos' Nest, and Tales of Symphonia] 1. "Vacation" by the Go-Go's Works represented: Mansfield Park Characters represented: Fanny to Edmund This song pretty aptly represents the part where Fanny goes to live with her birth family for a while and, while gone, realizes that she loves Edmund and can't stay away from him. This is also a great song and about my favorite characters from one of my favorite books. 2. "Like a Surgeon" by Weird Al Yankovic Works represented: The Simpsons Characters represented: Dr. Nick This song isn't plot-important in the slightest, so the main reason that it made it onto the Best of Canon Companions (and Canon Companions in the first place) is because it's just that relevant to Dr. Nick, a doctor whose qualifications are... questionable to say the least. Additionally, it's a catchy and funny song and about a good show. 3. "Right Behind You" by James Durbin Works represented: Fire Emblem Tellius Series; Goof Troop Universe Characters represented: Ike to Soren; Sylvia to Goofy This song is a great song about trust, and it's especially relevant in the chorus to Ike and Soren and during the verses to Sylvia and Goofy, but emotionally it works well for both. Additionally, it's somewhat plot important, about some of my favorite characters, and about two of my three favorite works ever. 4. "Pardon Me" by Weezer Works represented: Fire Emblem Tellius Series; El Goonish Shive; Fire Emblem 7 Characters represented: Nasir; Abraham; Renault In every case this song is being narrated by a truly contrite person who has done some terrible things in the past. In addition to being relevant, it's plot important in at least the two cases where it's about one of my favorite works, and it's a great song. 5. "Dreams of an Absolution" by Remix Factory Works represented: Sonic the Hedgehog Characters represented: Silver Full disclosure: I haven't actually played Sonic the Hedgehog 2006 so most of my opinions of this song's relevance came from trying to learn about Silver on a wiki, but from what I understand it's actually a really good song both for the plot and for Silver's character. Also, I like the song and the character regardless. 6. "Savages (Part 2)" from Pocahontas Works represented: Zootopia Characters represented: Gazelle and the panicked masses Here, Gazelle is narrating Pocahontas' parts, where she has to try to prevent the strife from developing further. Meanwhile, in the background, the predators and the prey are fighting with each other. I love the song as well as the movie it represents here, and it's very plot-important. 7. "She's So High" by Tal Bachman Works represented: Fire Emblem Tellius Series; The Simpsons Characters represented: Geoffrey about Elincia; Milhouse about Lisa The sentiment to this song is more relevant to Geoffrey, if not for the orphaned etymology of the historical and mythological references, but in both cases the song is narrated by a guy who has a crush on a girl whom he thinks is much better than he is. I like all the characters represented, both works, and the song. 8. "Billy" by James Blunt Works represented: One Flew Over the Cuckoos' Nest Characters represented: Billy Of course the name is the same, but in this particular case, it's much more than the name: there's a story of having had sex which he wasn't supposed to, the huge amount of regret, and him, ahem, "leaving". If that wasn't enough on its own to get it on the playlist, the song itself is great, as is Billy himself, and the work. 9. "I Will Follow You into the Dark" by Death Cab for Cutie Works represented: Fire Emblem Tellius Series; The Simpsons Characters represented: Soren to Ike; Smithers to Mr. Burns Yet another lopsided duplicate, while it's more-or-less relevant to Smithers and Mr. Burns, the song is much more relevant to Ike and Soren, with the only noticeable problems being specific names--Soren was taught in the school of hard knocks, vowed to never leave Ike regardless of what happened, travels the world with him, and eventually sets off with him. It's also much, much more plot-important, the work is much better, and the characters are better too on that side. It's also a really good song. 10. "Carry on Wayward Son" by Kansas Works represented: Tales of Symphonia Characters represented: Kratos to Lloyd and Lloyd to Kratos This lovely song is for the point in Tales of Symphonia where Kratos says his final goodbyes to Lloyd. At this point their relationship has reconciled and Kratos wants nothing more than for Lloyd to be victorious. I love the song as well as the characters and the game. 11. "Simple Man" by Lynyrd Skynyrd Works represented: Fire Emblem Tellius Series; Hey Arnold!; Cheers Characters represented: Brom; Stinky; Woody I love all three works represented? Check. One of my favorite characters from two of the works? Check. The song is awesome? Check. But even if two of those things weren't true, as a major character theme in two places, it would be considered plot important, even if it wasn't such an apt descriptor for the simple, kind country folk.
