Book Decoration: AKA All The Ways I Don't Use a Cricut

(this post is for people who don't want to buy an expensive cutting tool, or for those that do have an expensive cutting tool that would like to mix things up a little)

1. Print That Shit

If you're already printing your own textblocks, an easy step for titles is to print them. Above is a title printed onto an "obi" of decorative paper. I measured out where I wanted things on the finished book and laid it out in Affinity, then printed it on a full sheet & trimmed it down to wrap around the book. A more simple method is to print & glue on the label into a slight indent in the cover (to protect it). A third option is to do the spine in bookcloth, while you print on paper for the cover and then glue that paper onto the boards (this usually looks even better when it is a three-piece bradel bind).

2. Foil Quill / Heat Pens

The heat pen is one of my go-to tools, but it can be a bit touchy about materials. The most popular version is the We R Memory Keepers' Foil Quill (which is one of the most ergonomic), but other pens exist that can get you to a higher heat temp, finer lines, or more consistent foil. For example, I have a pen created by a local Japanese bookbinding studio that fares way better on leathers than the WRMK quill & with a finer tip, but it's hell to control. Best results in general are on paper or smooth bookcloth (starched linen, arrestox, colibri - even duo will work but its less solid). The fuzzier a bookcloth is, the less your foil quill wants to deal with it. This means the heat n bond method of making bookcloth does not play nice with a heat pen usually, but there are two solutions: 1) use this tutorial on paste + acrylic medium coated bookcloth instead that will get you a perfect surface for the heat pen, or 2) use the pen on paper & then glue onto the cloth. I did a video tutorial for both foil quill use and this type of homemade bookcloth for @renegadeguild Binderary in 2023.

You get the most consistent results by tracing through a printed template that is taped in place, as I do in the video above.

3. Paint That Shit

Acrylic paints will do you fine! The above is free-handed with a circle template, because I wanted that vibe. If you need straight lines that won't seep, lay them down with tape first & then paint over it first with a clear Acrylic medium, then your color. Same goes for stencils. 4. IT'S GOT LAYERS

By using layers of thinner boards, you can create interesting depths & contrasts on your cover. You can also make cutouts that peep through to the decorative paper behind. The most important part to this technique is the order in which each edge is wrapped. To get a good wrapped inside edge, you will split the turn in into tabs to get them to conform to a curve. You can also layer multiple colors of bookcloth without multiple layers of board, as seen below left, so long as you mind your cut edges for fraying.

5. Inlaid... anything

Mirrors! Marbled paper! I saw someone do a pretty metal bookmark once! The key is creating a little home for it to live in, which is pretty similar to the above layering method. On one layer you cut the shape, & glue that layer onto the bottom solid board before covering. You can do the top layer as an entire 1 mm board (like I did for the mirrors) or a sheet of cardstock, like I would use for inlaid paper.

6. Decorative Paper

Decorative paper is always helpful & adds to the paper hoard... & its effects can be layers with other techniques, as below. Marbles, chiyogami, momi, or prints & maps of all kinds can be great additions. Some papers may need a protective coating (such as wax or a sealer).

7. Stamps (with optional linocut)

While I've not used many more regular rubber stamps, I do know some who have, successfully! And I've used one once or twice with embossing powder (see photo 3 up, the gold anchor on the little pamphlet bind). What also works is to carve your own linocut or stamp, & then use block printing ink to ink it onto your fabric (as i did above). A bit time intensive, but it was nice how easily reproducible it was, and I liked the effect I got for this particular bind.

These methods are not exhaustive, just ones I've used, and there are of course many others. I haven't gone too into detail on any of these for the sake of length (& post photo limits) but feel free to ask about more specifics. Usually I'm using them in combination with other options.

This is amazing. I love Satsuki's eyebrows and the return of Omiko, Fukuroda and Maiko, showing their other sides.

I did a translation-summary hybrid of the drama CD that came with the 2nd blu-ray release. I made sure to include key points/dialog relevant to the main storyline (ie personalities/intentions of characters, terminology, etc.) that were missing from other translations I read online. Enjoy and discuss! :D

This drama CD takes place right after Ryuko's battle with Tsumugu (ep 5).

Ryuko gives a quick summary of who she is and why she's at Honnouji City (she's after the Scissor Blade woman, she thinks Satsuki knows something, etc). She's walking the streets limping from wounds from her battle with Tsumugu. Mako pops out of nowhere and says she's hungry. Suddenly Mataro shows up chasing after two shoplifters. Ryuko catches the shoplifters who turn out to be Fukuroda and Omiko who had been demoted to no star students because they lost to Ryuko. Fukuroda and Omiko talk about how life's been shitty: got kicked out of their respective clubs; they were sports scholarship students so once they're useless at their respective sport they're considered trash; and most importantly they can't find food. They must also fend for themselves since they left their family back in rural Japan to join Honnouji (Honnouji had been paying living expenses for their families and themselves only while they were star students). Fukuroda and Omiko are good sports about their loss and also mention that they're looking forward to the Honnouji Final Stand Exam (期末試験(Term Exam)--> 聖期末糸験 (Holy End of the Century Thread Test）for no star students that will be held next week. You get into teams of 4 and you go through several obstacles and the winners get the exam sheet. Finally, if you pass this paper exam, you're awarded a 3 star uniform. Fukuroda and Omiko convince Ryuko and Mako to join their team, since if they win, Ryuko might get a chance to get some information about her dad from Satsuki.

Inumuta reports to Satsuki and the Elite 4 that Fukuroda, Omiko, Ryuko, and Mako are participating in the Final Stand Exam. Satsuki says this year's exam will be a little different this year.

Fukuroda and Omiko have dinner at the Mankansokus. The two reveal that Satsuki personally scouted the two to Honnouji Academy after observing their jab/serving skills (albeit while the two were doing laundry in a river. since they couldn't afford washing machines. Japanese puns ahoy). The two also reveal that they plan to live together after they graduate and run a Boxing-Tennis Bar. In return for dinner, the two decide to do the laundry for the Mankanshokus. Family fluff results in the Mankanshokus saying they'll back up the team during the exam. Mikisugi pops out of nowhere and tells everyone that this year's exam won't be about strength, but instead intelligence and academics. You must correctly answer each question announced by the Student Council successively, and the remaining teams get the exam sheet. Fukuroda and Omiko are bummed because they suck at academics. Mikisugi says he was merely reporting what the Student Council said, as they rule Honnouji City. He also believes that this change was implemented because the Student Council knows that Ryuko's participating in a team with non-academic members. Ryuko gets pissed and runs out of the house to go find Satsuki.

Ryuko confronts Satsuki about the rule change. Satsuki explains that intelligence and academics are equally essential as strength to a student. Satsuki says the academy has been rattled after Ryuko showed up, so Satsuki plans to make students remember what a true student must excel at.

Satsuki: "I told you last time that all club presidents are after you. If you defeat them all I'll fight you again. So, if the Homework Club attacks you, what were you going to do?

Ryuko: "Well...uh...there's a club like that?"

Satsuki: "No"

Ryuko: "There isn't?!"

Satsuki: "I'm pointing out possibilities. But have the mindset that something that has the potential of happening will definitely happen. Honnouji Academy is my kingdom. Everything that occurs has my will. Therefore this new exam is also Kiryuin Satsuki! Are you going to run away from my challenge? MATOI RYUKO!"

Ryuko: "Grr...damn"

Senketsu: "Ryuko, there's no way you can win this argument right now."

Ryuko: "I'm going win this Final Stand Exam! Remember that!" and runs away.

Ryuko's now pumped for this academics battle, but has no plans of action. Tsumugu drives up to Ryuko and gives her 2 pieces of information: "if you're going to study, go to the library" and "the Honnouji Academy Library is just around the corner" drives away.

Mako's still trying to find Ryuko after she ran out of the house during dinner. Mako's also still super hungry and finds a trail of cheese (ep4 de ja vu). The scene ends with a crashing sound.

Ryuko and Senketsu arrive at the oh-so-amazing Honnouji Library, and beat up everyone in there to take it over. Ryuko boasts her cramming skills and proceeds to study her ass off…but she ends up sleeping at the library for 6 straight days (occasionally waking up to eat and go to the bathroom). Fukuroda and Omiko get angry at her since they were depending on her for the brains, and Ryuko had said to leave all the studying to her. Mako suddenly pops up and shows everyone a mole-shaped transceiver she bought in the slums to use to cheat on the exam. They all have no problems with cheating and are willing to do whatever it takes to win.

Exam day at the academy grounds, there's more people than usual since this time it's not a strength/fighting-oriented exam. Fukuroda and Omiko are wearing the transceivers while the Mankanshokus have computers (presumably stolen) in front of them to look up answers. The Student Council and Satsuki make their grand appearance.

Satsuki announces the first question: "Kiryuin Satsuki's eyebrows are thick! O or X (true or false)!"

Ryuko: "What the?"

Gamagoori: "You've got 30 seconds. Press the O or X button."

Ryuko: "What kind of question is that?!"

Fukuroda: "Even croquettes don't know the answer!"

Mako: "O, it's exactly how you see it."

Omiko: "That's not a good idea! What if she's sensitive about her eyebrows? We'd make Satsuki-sama angry right off the bat. It's totally X."

Fukuroda: "Wait, Satsuki-sama hates people with attitudes that deliberately attempt to flatter. THICK THINGS ARE THICK! I think she's looking for people who can say things straight up."

Mako: "I see, you've got a point."

Ryuko: "Hey wait!"

Gamagoori: "TIME'S UP"

(all teams submit their answer)

Fukuroda: "Most students have answered O!"

Omiko: "As expected of Honnouji Academy students. There aren't many cowards."

Mako: "Ryuko chan! Why did you press X?!"

Fukuroda: "You bastard! Are you serious?!"

Satsuki: "The correct answer is…X! CALLING THESE EYEBROWS THICK IS PRESUMPTUOUS! Truly thick eyebrows aren't dropped-spindle-shaped like mine. Eyebrows that are consistently thick from start to finish can only, truly be called thick!"

(teams who were incorrect immediately get thrown out of academy grounds)

Satsuki: "Hmph, I'm impressed you're still remaining, Matoi."

Ryuko: "It's you. I assumed you'd pull out some outrageous logic like that. How the fuck is this an academic question?"

Satsuki: "I'm measuring how observant students are of the personality of the exam proctor and the intent of the question. You having some perception is something I wasn't expecting."

Ryuko: "Tch, say what you wanna say."

Gamagoori announces the next question which is about the history of school rules and its relation to government laws. The team tries to contact the Mankanshokus with their tranceiver, but Inumuta has already disabled it. All hope thought to be is lost, but it turns out that Senketsu had been studying while Ryuko was sleeping. Senketsu goes on a roll and answers correctly to all the questions.

Gamagoori's questions are about laws, Sanageyama's are about konnyaku (How much konnyaku does a Japanese person consume daily? 6 grams), Jakuzure's are about fashion/classical music, and Inumuta's are about math/cryptography. Ryuko's team becomes the last team remaining. Sanageyama's about to ask the final question, which of course is about konnyaku, but Satsuki cuts him off saying she's tired of konnyaku. Gamagoori announces the last question, which asks why this exam requires the team to consist of 4 members. Ryuko tells Senketsu to leave this question to her, and she answers that it's for each member of the team to fight an Elite 4. And nobody has won against the Elite 4 yet, which is why there aren't any other 3 star students. This answer is correct.

Sanageyama: "Damn…my konnyaku question would've been the finishing blow to defeat them."

Nonon: "No way."

Inumuta: "Nope."

Gamagori: "Impossible."

Satsuki admits that she's underestimated Ryuko and allows Gamagoori to give Ryuko the exam sheet, which appears to be a piece of cloth. The Mankanshokus barge in to the scene warning Ryuko to stay alert. Another Mako appears saying that the Mako on the team is fake. Barazo and Sukuyo had found the real Mako locked in a cheese factory, rescued her, and arrived at the academy grounds. Maiko breaks out of her Mako costume with an OHOHOHOOOO! Maiko says she wants revenge for Ryuko taking away her status, and she had Fukuroda and Omiko join her plans. All 3 laugh at Ryuko for being fooled. Maiko has a conversation with Gamagoori proving her resolve and tenacity for revenge and gets Satsuki's permission to battle Ryuko. The exam sheet engulfs Maiko, Fukuroda, and Omiko to turn into a goku uniform that all 3 wear at the same time. GATTAI! The exam sheet (答案用紙→戦暗怪糸=Fighting Dark Suspicious Thread) is a cloth that's 30% life fiber which is the equivalent of a 3 star uniform. Maiko says even though one person can't properly wear a 3 star uniform, having 3 people wear it at once will balance things out. More kanji puns about strepower (Maiko's move is called Strepower Strepower Strepower Kick). Ryuko Life Fiber Synchronizes and struggles to hold off the attacks at first because their goku uniform has the swiftness of tennis and boxing sports. Senketsu says he's also struggling to unleash his powers because he feels heavy and wrinkly. He explains that these wrinkles are equivalent to the human brain's wrinkles, which he got from studying so much at the library. Sukuyo gives Mako a portable iron and Mako EXTREEEEEEME IRONINGs Senketsu. Senketsu forgets everything he's learned and feels lighter. Ryuko goes Scissor Blade Decapitation Mode (cue DON'T LOSE YOUR WAAAAAY) and Sen-I-Soushitsus the 3 star uniform.

Ryuko: "Did you see that Kiryuin Satsuki?! Huh? Where'd she go? Damn, I let her get away again!"

Satsuki and the Elite 4 are walking in the Honnouji Academy hallway. Satsuki is impressed with the tenacity of Maiko, Fukuroda, and Omiko so she says she'll give them one star uniforms. Gamagoori contests that doing so will disrupt the order of the academy, but Satsuki says she doesn't mind. She tells Inumuta to contact REVOCS to order a large amount of goku uniform life fibers. Satsuki goes back to the Student Council room. The Elite 4 have a conversation:

Sanageyama: "A large order of life fibers huh. What is she planning?"

Inumuta: "Probably the mass production of club presidents. What does this mean…"

Jakuzure: "But when Satsuki-sama makes that face, she's always on to something fun."

Gamagoori: "Something that's worth disrupting the order of the academy?"

Satsuki's monologue: "Using the existence of Matoi to strengthen Honnouji Academy. Hmm my next move…why don't I call it the Naturals Election."

Friends called me a Fake Engineer, I bought their dinner.

My daughter 17, asked me to post this here. And Im the Dad who does as the women in my life tell me, which is how I ended up in a restaurant tonight with snobs. So the characters, my wife, wife’s coworker 1 and her husband arrogant engineer 1(AE1), wife’s coworker 2 and her husband my CPA, and Lastly AE2 and his wife. Each couple has two teenage children with us.

We are at a Japanese steakhouse in America where the chefs cook in front of you. CW1 and AE1 invited all of us for their youngest daughter’s birthday. Since their daughter is close with our daughter. So the parents are at one table and the teens at another. At the teen table my daughters (17 and 14) order sushi appetizers, mocktails, and shrimp with scallops. At our table the Sake is flowing along with a few top shelf drinks. My wife and I order our appetizers, drinks and dinners. We are all paying for ourselves and I see AE1 and AE2 seem to in competition for who can spend the most. My CPA and I chuckle at them and stay out of the fray. Until AE2 hears my daughter order and says to her, “careful now your daddy is only and agricultural engineer. He doesnt make as much as us real engineers.” For context they are structural engineers with Bachelor degrees, Im an agricultural engineer with a PHD. I work for governments, private investors, and several agro corporations. I own my own consulting firm. I help build sustainable reusable gardens. And this work allows me to travel to poorer countries and help them use what they have to start growing their own food. Apparently these men thought All I did was travel to impoverished places and teach people to dig in the dirt. They believed I did all this work for free and therefore made very little money. Im not “rich” by any stretch, but Im comfortable. We dont do extravagance, so we have savings and my wife works. However in 2023 I was awarded a handsome contract to design tower gardens in several states. Its a seven figure contract over three years. Back to dinner These guys ask me about the most ridiculous things. Like “is it good to grow onions and carrots in the same garden?” And were laughing at me and my work until their wives told them to stop. I chalk it up to drunken arrogance and dont even bother to answer. My CPA was laughing so hard he almost fell out of his chair. Apparently, he is AE1’s CPA as well. And knows the ins and outs of both our finances. AE1 taunts CPA to tell the table what he brought home last year after bonuses. CPA pulled up the figures on the phone and tells us. Its about 1/3 of what I brought home in 2023. The CPA says “I have yours up want me to share?” I decline. And he nods. Que another round of taunts. I go to the restroom and find the waiter. I pay for the whole check and leave a generous tip on top of what they added for a big party. After our sobert the waiter thanks me in front of everyone for the tip and wishes everyone a good night. AE1 and AE2 stare at me for a moment. I smile nod and tell CPA to tell them my income last year. After which I simply said goodnight. Petty absolutely, gratifying damn right.

Daniel Law thoughts and observations.  Why is his last name so bloody difficult to figure out?

This is a quick and frivolous post as opposed to my normally long form ones.  I’ve got it hard for Daniel at the moment; I’m wade through the vast expanse that is the internet looking for merch for him.  Steven merch is like shooting fish in a barrel with how popular he is.  K.K. merch is also easy and super cheap second hand.  But Daniel merch.  Hoooo boy, it takes some time and effort to find.

The first issue around him is his bloody last name.  Which Japanese isn’t equipped to deal with.  This shows in my merch quest as I’ve scrolled through pages and pages of items.  But first:

The Darkhorse translation calls him Daniel Low.

The Funimation translation settles on Daniel Law.

When you listen to the sub and the dub, both the Japanese VA and English VA both clearly say “Law”.  I’d like to also note that the Japanese VA for Steven, Mitsuru Miyamoto, has really good pronunciation for all of the English terms/names he says specifically which makes me really think “Law” is the intended spelling.   The credits also reflect this.

Both versions also settle on the title of Lieutenant.  While the literal translation is Assistant Inspector (keibuho - 警部補).  I’m not sure why they didn’t go with Detective which sounds like the most American term and Inspector being British.  I guess Detective is a role while, Daniel would still have a police rank associated with him. But I know squat about American policing terms and job titles.  Maybe, I should go back and watch some Law and Order and cringe?

Where is this total weirdness around Daniel’s name coming from?  Especially if we get a season three and Marcus also shows up for the Calamity Auction arc.

Now, we all know that having an equal transfer of Law into Japanese can’t happen since there is no way to make say a “La-wa” etc.  The best you can get is to drop down in the r-line to the “ro” combo.  But then you’ve got that pesky “w” you need to do something with.

If you wanted “Low” this would be the easiest way to get it.  Go with “ro” and add the long vowel dash making it “ro-oh”

But we can see this reading of “ro” with a long “o” can be [sighs] Rho, Lau; Low, Loo, Rau, Raux, Roe or Roh.

Okay, this isn’t what happens in the credits.  The Japanese credits write his name out this way.  “ro” with the “u”.  Now, the first hit is “Law”.  Yay!

But then we get also; Loew, Low, Lowe or even Rowe!  Argh! 

So, how does this tie into merch?  Well, how his name is spelled on KKSS merch of course and how to search for it!

For Back 2 Back full color acrylics that were Jump (Festa Specials I’d guess), we get him and Marcus being referred to as Lowe.  ‘Cause they are twin brothers and Daniel is the older one! Another issue with Japanese language mechanics versus English but that’s for another time.  I’d read Daniel to be several years older since he’s referred to as “older brother” in B2B but since you have to place your sibling in age relative to you - Marcus has to say older brother in the original Japanese.    

There is also a small special badge set with Steven and Daniel here, where he is also referred to as “Lowe”.  Did I impulsively buy this?  Yes, yes I did of course!

Yet when we look at other items music/band themed (acoustic guitar) , the American heroes (fighter pilot? why?), ice skating, saloon barkeep/western. he’s got a last name of “Low”.

You might begin to think - okay, it is clear that 1.) there is no official spelling of his name down on paper.  2.) merch designers see ロウ and make an educated guess 3.) his name can’t be “Law”.

Buuutttt let’s go to the actual search function of a Japanese site like Goods Republic.  And what do we find in the character list on the left hand side?  Daniel Law.

Additionally,  you go on Zen Market and access JP Mercari directly, searching with the terms of ダニエル and 血界戦線.  You will get merch that not only pulls up Daniel but all the translated descriptions will always refer to him as Daniel Law.

What have I learned from this?  That until we get season three and Daniel gets a floating info box like below, we will never truly know how his name is spelled.  However, with the sense of humor that Nightow has and his wordplay in English, I really still think the original intent is “Law” because he’s a fucking cop.  Come on, easiest cheese joke ever.

And if he doesn’t get a floating info box in a season three, it means they aren’t giving him full justice due to his increasing role in the series.

oh hey ive been meaning to ask is there an easy or preferred way to get into kamitsubaki lore esp for vwp. ive tried to skim the website like 3 separate times & only picked up the very very basics

ok so the problem with kamitsubaki lore is that literally like Most of it that is direct and not just implied thru music videos/twitter posts happened in a fuckign ARG that is... kind of lost media kind of not. the kamitsubaki city ARG took place on a website where players were given new... riddles and tasks called Qs every day for the month of october in 2021 and that website is now inaccessible but people i know archived and translated all the content they could so it's still viewable in some fashion. a couple of my friends practically singlehandedly edit the kamitsubaki fandom wiki and you can find all the "story fragments" (cutscenes from the ARG with direct story) translated here (oh and there's also lost media from before the ARG from kaf's old fanbox page that is now inactive/lost media... i have all of the images from that but they aren't all typeset yet so i'd have to get back to you on that one. it's dubious whether all that stuff is still canon anyways, a lot of it seemed conceptual before kamicity was properly outlined. one day i'll compile all this shit somewhere for everyone to have easy access since the wiki is kinda eh for it)

when you said "skim the website" i assume you're talking about the website for the narrative TTRPG stuff? perhaps? sorry kamitsubaki has websites all over the place it's kind of a disaster. i can't give too much information on this one honestly, my japanese isn't good enough and i'm a little bit behind, but afaik other than the tutorial after you sign up which walks you through a scenario with one of the girls as TTRPG practice, the rest is just... TTRPG stuff. like you making up stories with other players within the setting and whatnot. you'd have to browse through it. (eventually there's going to be some sort of small video game related to all of this. exciting. who knows when that'll happen)

there is also some stuff to do with the cr/ypto project that's loosely correlated with kamitsubaki city i guess but not really you can ignore that. and i would ignore it. i do

otherwise it's kind of like vocaloid song series where the VWP music videos contain hints to lore/metaphorically show what's happening. occasionally art is posted to the hashtag # STORY_VWP on twitter too which contains art correlated with the actual story of kamicity.

if you want my basic breakdown and understanding, tldr the girls r summoned from elsewhere by a mysterious organization called the Restoration Foundation to use magic singing powers to restore life to a city, but the city is doomed to end in apocalypse from fishlike creatures called Tessaracters every single time and they're like. in a time loop with varying amounts of memory retrieval trying to save kamitsubaki city and go home. there seems to be a lot of significance with what clothes the girls are wearing in different media and etc etc

Sorry i'm sleepy and this is probably too long and also a mess. the reason it's a mess though is because VWP lore is a mess and that's part of the fun for me. if you have more specific questions about specific parts i probably can help with an answer though! i'm not as into it as some other people but the lore is still fun to theorize on and i like seeing symbolism in the music videos.

this isn't even touching on like. how there's the kaf membership manga canon which is just an official comic where vwp is in high school together. or otogibanashi which was a series of... spoken skits? that kaf put on at her concerts for a while and has yet to be concluded and is a completely different universe from the rest of the vwp lore. Yikes, this is a very dire state, if we will see more than one team breaks 75 and 140 I will be SHOCKED. The amount of TBDs is also staggering... 

That being said, we still get one Japanese, 2 Canadians, 2 Italians, and one American teams with a lot of potential. But please god, make them all stop using emo pop songs.

Men:

I had a moment of panic when I couldn't find Shoma on the list, but gladly he is there. Jason however is not (boo). Happy to see Yuma back and there a lot of great names on the list. Canada is really in a bad place when not one man got 2 assignments from what I see and they all go only to two GP assignments (yikes). It’s funny how in almost every GP you can mostly see who is in a good position to win it, but everything else can go wild because men will men. 

Women:

Another example of the dire state of Canadian skating, only three women with assignments and only one of them with two assignments, this is bad. So happy to see Wakaba back on the list, and overall great names from Japan and Korea.

Also worth noting that in all 3 disciplines we are not really seeing more than 1-2 up and coming juniors, which I find kind of unfortunate.

We really are stuck with G/P, C/B, and G/F for another year. What will it take for at least one of these teams to clear out ffs?

Lajoie/Lagha vs. Green/Parsons in both GP assignments feels intentional and like the powers at be are setting up the next big rivalry. I don’t like it.

CPom up against Zinga/Kolesnik in a GP is also quite the challenge and I think intentional from USFS.

Juniors debuts: Mrazeks with 2 assignments, Lim/Quan with 2 assignments, B/B with just one. Suepr sad not to see the junior Brits here (love them) and hope at least on of the TBDs will go to them.

Canadian federation backing Fabbri/Ayer (understandable) and Langhan/Razgulajevs (infuriating)  but not supporting Hensen/Lickers which very much annoys me.

US dance field remains crowded with 9 (!!!!) different teams on the GP circuit: C/B, H/B, G/P(2), CPom, Z/K, Browns, P/B, M/A. B/S. The only other country to come close is Canada with 7 teams: G/P, Candanes, L/L, F/A, B/B, L/LG, L/R.

I have to admit I felt emotionally disconnected from skating since WTT and in most way it still feels that way. I hope things will start getting more exciting soon and we will get some (good) programs announcements. Either way, bring it on.

Being tired all the time

Mid to late October

Yesterday, I went to my middle school in the afternoon because of a schedule change, usually I'm there all day. The teacher that I work with told me about the conferences going on for the third years. The school system here is different from the states in that kids work really hard to get into good high schools as opposed to us working hard in high school to get into good colleges. The kids have to meet with the teachers and their parents and talk about what school they want to go to, and the exams they will have to take. The third years are US ninth graders. Their high school is only 3 years. I felt unqualified to choose my university at 18, so I can't imagine having to choose a high school at 14/15 especially because the high school chosen will affect the colleges one can get into. The teacher has to go to all of these meetings back to back and they happen like once a month ish from now until they apply (I'm not sure of the whole timeline). He was like “this is why teachers are always dead during the fall”. And I'd agree. I have never seen that teacher not extremely busy. 

I try to remind myself that this is supposed to be fun. Despite being here to work, my work isnt particularly difficult and I ought to be having fun. More fun? I'm not sure. Considering I have set hours of about 8-4 during the week, it is difficult for me to do much. Though, today is Monday and I am going grocery shopping after work and I'm excited to pick out desserts. Last time I got these waffle pastry cookie things? They're waffles but encrusted in sugar but they're not overly sweet. I love them. I'll also be getting tricolor dango. Anyway, I want to do more stuff over the weekend. But I'm so tired on the weekends that I often don't do that much. It can be difficult to plan things because some information is not accessible to me (websites will be not updated, hard to understand, all in Japanese, etc). Or the events hosted by the Chiba AJET (chiba prefecture jet association) group are so far from me it becomes an all day event and then some. 

Even trying to convince myself to do solo traveling is difficult because I don't think that's my preferred method of traveling. Despite being in a beautiful, new place I am the same person and I have to relax my expectations of how I should be spending my time. Just yesterday, I went to a cafe in the middle of nowhere with a lady from the English circle club in my town. She is very sweet and has lived in California on and off for years, so she speaks great English. The cafe was someone's house but also not? It had a homey feeling, eccentric decorations, and the people there all knew each other. There were also 2 cats that were so cute and friendly. I hadn't seen animals in a while so this was big for me. I got curry rice for 600 yen and it had so many vegetables and beans in it and my friend told me everything was fresh from their farm or garden. I think the cafe was open late for a small event because of the full moon yesterday. My point is that I didn't know I would be going to this place until the morning of when she invited me. I hate doing things spontaneously because it makes my brain anxious and nonfunctional. I agreed despite not wanting to go in the moment because I knew it would be a fun experience regardless. I wonder if pushing myself to do things alone would have the same effect. In the same vein, I could also just let myself enjoy my solitary hobbies in peace.

Innocence lost the dark side of Akihabara

Pedophiles claim drawn childporn (lolicon) decreases sexualization of real children, but if that were true, why is Japan one of the only countries in the world where junior idol culture and DVD’s containing the sexualization of real children are legal? Obviously, lolicon only increases the sexualization of real children.

The crowd in the Ishimaru Soft event space in Akihabara sits anxiously awaiting the arrival of an idol, whose most recent DVD they purchased for the right to meet her. Led on by the MC, the 50 or so middle-aged men call out in unison: “Mana-chan!” After two more calls, she appears—a girl of 13, looking dazed and sheepish. As the cameras zoom in, she strips down to her bikini, which drapes on her under-developed form.

Mana is a “low teen” pursuing a career as a model. As abhorrent as it may sound, children as young as 2 who are billed as “junior idols” release photo books and DVDs. Insofar as the models do not expose their breasts or genitals, this is not against the law. But the way scantily clad kids blow on flutes and lick ice cream cones in front of the camera has raised eyebrows at home and abroad.

The idol industry in Japan in general is estimated at 60 billion yen annually, and junior idols shift some 3 million photo books and DVDs per year. There are countless websites (such as Pure Little Sister Club) and a syndicated magazine (Moecco) catering to fans.

This trend began in the ’90s, when columnist Akio Nakamori coined the term "chidol," or child idol, to describe the sudden increase of young models. The neologism fell out of favor and was replaced by “junior idol,” which shifts the emphasis from childhood and links the phenomenon with legitimate up-and-coming idols.

In Akihabara, long known for its stock of lolicon (Lolita Complex) and “little sister” movies and magazines, the number of shops advertising idol DVDs marked U-15 (under-15) has quietly increased.

“This is a gray area in Japan, but the residents of Akihabara and I find it reprehensible,” says Takaya Kobayashi, 54, a Chiyoda Ward councilman.

But at places such as Oimoya, located right on Akihabara’s main street of Chuo Dori, fans crowd around merchandise displays featuring underage girls.

“Looking at junior idols soothes me,” explains Shigure Akagi, 45, an artist who says he draws inspiration from these products. “I do not have children of my own, so seeing them makes me happy.”

He isn’t the only one. Mr, the most eccentric member of Takashi Murakami’s stable of pop artists, admits he suffers from lolicon, and recruited junior idols to star in his 2008 film, "Nobody Dies."

Ostensibly, the parents who sign their daughters to be junior idols are hoping they achieve mainstream fame like Mr’s girls. And it isn’t impossible. Saaya Irie, for example, was cast in "Hell Girl" and other TV programs after her stint as a child model.

Legally, this is a dark shade of gray. A 1999 Japanese law bans children in depictions of sex, genital touching and “arousing” nudity, but junior idols manage to skirt these issues. In 2002, Japan signed the U.N.’s Optional Protocol on the Sale of Children, Child Prostitution and Child Pornography, which bans “any representation, by whatever means, of real or simulated explicit sexual activities or any representation of the sexual parts of a child for primarily sexual purposes.” Defenders say images of junior idols are not for “primarily” sexual purposes. Indeed, scenes in these DVDs can be as harmless as family travel videos. Just not always.

This may be gray, but people overseas are seeing red. In April 2008, UNICEF distributed a petition with 21,000 signatures asking Japan to curb junior idols and lolicon anime. In November, at an international meeting in Brazil, Japan was condemned as “The Nation of Child Porn.” Japan and Russia, the organizers say, are the only G8 nations that have not taken action against child exploitation.

Super Bundling: Bango’s strategy for transforming the subscription economy

TOKYO

Bango, a major player in mobile payments and subscription bundling, helps consumers to charge digital content and services directly to their mobile phone bills through its Digital Vending Machine technology.

In an interview with Japan Today, Bango’s Chief Marketing Officer Anil Malhotra and Senior Vice President for APAC, Andy Suzuki, share valuable insights into the rapidly evolving subscription economy in Japan and East Asia.

With 65% of Japanese consumers frustrated by managing multiple subscriptions and 68% unable to afford all the services they want, the pair argue in favor of Super Bundling — Bango’s service that seeks to simplify subscription management.

In addition, Malhotra and Suzuki provided advice for foreign companies seeking to enter Japan’s competitive subscription market, noting two major elements of success: finding a good local partner and staying in the market for the long-term.

Can you tell us more about Bango and its services?

Malhotra: Bango is based in Cambridge, England, and Andy manages our Southeast Asia operations from Tokyo. We’ve been in business for about 25 years, starting when mobile internet began to take off in Europe. At the time, we focused on figuring out how to monetize content and services on mobile devices.

Our key innovation was carrier billing, which allows consumers to charge online services directly to their phone bills. This method became widely used around the world, including here in Japan, where mobile carriers like NTT Docomo and KDDI adopted the technology. Today, Bango handles around $8-9 billion in consumer spending annually, supporting services for companies like Google Play and Microsoft.

How has the company evolved with the market?

In recent years, we’ve shifted focus toward subscription services. We’ve seen more and more consumers signing up for recurring monthly payments across various sectors — everything from entertainment and gaming to education and health. As a result, we identified an opportunity to help telcos bundle these subscriptions with their core products, such as broadband or mobile plans.

For example, Verizon in the U.S. has launched a platform called +play, allowing customers to manage around 50 different subscription services in one place. We call this approach "Super Bundling," and it offers consumers a unified way to manage and pay for multiple subscriptions, often at a discounted rate.

In the “Subscription Wars: Super Bundling Awakens” report, which explores consumer trends across Japan, South Korea and Taiwan, there’s a section on Japan. Could you talk a bit more about the subscription ecosystem here, and how it compares markets in the region?

Malhotra: Yes, Japan is an interesting market. When comparing Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan, you notice that these regions are starting to follow global trends, particularly those in North America. In the U.S., for example, many people have people have an average 4.5 subscriptions, but here in East Asia, the average consumer has around 3-4 subscriptions. Japan is lower than Korea and Taiwan in terms of subscriptions per user.

Taiwan has the highest number of subscriptions per user, and South Korea is slightly lower. However, Japan stands out because a significant percentage of subscriptions — 39% — are acquired through indirect channels, which is the highest in the world. By comparison, only 20% of U.S. subscribers use indirect channels.

Another notable trend in Japan is the strong adoption of gaming subscriptions, especially among younger consumers. There’s also a significant focus on local content, like anime and J-dramas, which plays a role in the high engagement levels we see here.

One of the most striking stats from the report was the issue of affordability in Japan. It says that 68% of subscribers are unable to afford all the services they want, which is the highest in the region.

Can you talk about how Super Bundling helps reduce costs and increase customer loyalty?

Malhotra: Absolutely. One of the main benefits of bundling is that it often provides better value than buying individual subscriptions. For instance, Verizon’s +play offers a movie bundle that includes Netflix, Showtime and Paramount for $27.99, compared to $35 if you bought them separately; that’s about a $60 saving per year.

Additionally, as services crack down on things like password sharing, bundles become an even more attractive way to get value for money. Consumers are also drawn to bundles because they simplify management—everything is consolidated into one bill.

In terms of loyalty, bundling helps reduce churn. Subscribers tend to stay longer with both their telco and their subscription services. For instance, the average duration of a subscription increases from 12 to about 18 months when part of a bundle. If a consumer has multiple subscriptions tied to their telco, they’re less likely to switch providers because it’s more complicated to move everything.

Suzuki: Yes, that's a great point. Our analysis shows that when consumers have multiple subscriptions through a telco, they’re much less likely to cancel. For example, if someone has a streaming subscription, an education service, and a fitness app bundled together, they’re much more likely to stay loyal to their telco because it simplifies their life.

That’s very interesting. We noticed in your earlier comments, Mr Malhotra, that you mentioned health subscriptions are becoming a major growth area. Could you expand on that?

Malhotra: Yes, that’s right. We’re seeing health-related subscriptions become a significant growth area globally, and Japan is no exception. These range from fitness and wellness apps to medication and supplements being offered as subscription services. It’s a whole new category that’s emerging.

Another area of growth is user-generated content platforms, such as YouTube Premium. Over the past couple of years, platforms like Patreon (a monetization platform) and Substack (an online publishing platform) have seen massive growth, allowing creators to monetize their content through subscription-based models. While this trend is still developing in Japan, I believe that over the next five to ten years, we’ll see a lot of interesting developments in this space.

Bango has been active in Japan for a while now, so what advice would you give to foreign companies looking to enter Japan’s subscription economy.

Malhotra: The key to success in Japan is recognizing that while there are similarities with other markets, the differences are just as important. First, find a good local partner—someone who understands the market and can guide you through the complexities. It’s crucial to have local expertise to help navigate everything from consumer preferences to regulatory issues.

Second, you need to invest time. Unlike some other markets, where deals can happen quickly, Japan requires time to build trust and relationships. But once you invest that time, the rewards can be substantial, and those relationships tend to last longer. There’s a lot of integrity in how business is conducted, and it’s essential to understand that you need to commit to the market​

of course ^^ thank you for sharing the interest with me. ill put my rambling below:

first things first, i am omitting lelouch and suzaku because i think it is too easy. the show wouldnt be what it is without them.

i dont know if i can tier these characters (since i would have to give it much more thought than im willing to put into currently) but here we go:

kallen - kallen is the only character with an actual backbone and moral compass on this entire show. interestingly enough, i dont think shes written as well as she should be. the episode about her and her mother was one of the episodes that hit the hardest during my initial watch through. i also really like the scene where she stops lelouch from taking a hit of refrain as well as when she kisses him goodbye during the un conference. she is a mixed person that chooses to side with the side of liberation versus the side of comfort, and that was something she was always doing. she would always be japanese, she would always fight for her people and for what is right. she is easily the most honorable character of them all.

c.c. - c.c. is one, if not the, most interesting immortal character i have ever seen. what attracts me the most to her is the fact that she is Not a Good Person. her life has been full of strife from before she got her code and afterwards. she's the reason mao's existence is as fucked up as it is. the whole time shes lelouchs accomplice, she knows that marianne is alive and what her (& charles') plan was for the world. its thanks to lelouch that she remembers how to be human again. shes hypocritical. shes wise but also immature. she damned lelouch by giving him a geass but she still grieves him at the end. hell, one of the final shots of her during zero requiem was her praying in a church, the same place where she was betrayed. its still obviously a place of comfort to some level--which, i think is incredibly symbolic for her character. shes cryptic and hard to understand (both on purpose and not). shes sad. lonely. self sufficient. despite her long years, she is still human.

shirley - shirley represents love (not romantic love specifically, but all kinds of love) in code geass. going from her crush on lelouch, to losing her father, to learning lelouch is zero, to SAVING him from being captured--then following up after she regains her memories and how despite everything, she still wants to be by lelouch's side because she realizes that he is alone. she tells suzaku that she loves lelouch when suzaku uses past tense. she tells him that shes forgiven lelouch--which is Much easier said than done on shirley's end vs suzaku's end, but i digress. she is then murdered because of rolo's own twisted love. shes' an interesting point of view into the story because shes very much a civilian in comparison to the other major characters. there are a lot of shots of everyday people throughout cg, but shirley being a main character in this sense puts her up there for me, though id argue that shes more of a writing device versus an actual character, too.

v.v. - (smt3 hell rider voice) here we go. the person reading this might be thinking--huh? v.v.? and yes, i say. my interest in v.v. comes more from things that were implied more than they were shown, as most of said things are recalled by other characters. like Every character i am interested in, he is a hypocrite. he is as conniving as his brother, their wish being one of truth while they were surrounded by lies. they would always have each other. but then came marianne, the lady knight, the flash. neither charles nor v.v. couldve ever predicted her, nor how much she changed charles--regardless if that is true or not. what really intrigues me is that it was implied that v.v. also loved marianne. v.v., an immortal stuck in a childs body, their only true tether to the world (his brother) and the part of the world he must have desired the most (marianne). i actually am planning to write a fic about this premise because it interests me so deeply. dont hold your breath for it tho, haha.

ive been working on this for longer than id like to admit so ill just do a little rapid round for other characters i really like.
