How Not to Break Your Sewing Machine
I work in a shop where we repair sewing machines (a LOT of sewing machines), and unsurprisingly we see a lot of the same problems over and over again, so I'm here with some advice on how to keep your machine running longer.
When you break a needle, dig around until you have found the broken piece. If you leave it in there, it can end up in the wrong place at the wrong time and break something vital.
SLOW DOWN. The function of your sewing machine depends on the different moving parts ending up in the right place at the right time. Having to go through a lot of/heavy material slows the needle down, but it doesn't slow down the mechanism underneath the needle plate. If you try to go your usual speed, the needle will arrive too late and collide with something it shouldn't, breaking either the needle or the bobbin case. If the material is especially heavy (say you're sewing several layers of denim, or sewing webbing onto canvas), take your foot off the pedal and turn the machine by hand.
Clean out the bobbin area after each project. Really. Your machine comes with a little brush for this purpose. If it doesn't, a little dollar-store paint brush will work just fine. Remember what I said above about things being in the right place at the right time? Everything needs to be able to move freely for this to work. I know it looks like it's just a little dust and fluff, but it will jam up your machine eventually.
If you can, get your timing adjusted by a professional. I know most people don't have a sewing machine repair shop in their neighbourhood, but if you can do this, it's worth it. If the machine's timing is good, then you're more likely to have a little leeway for heavier fabric or a lintier bobbin case. When the timing is just a bit off, it takes less of an obstacle to put the needle in a place it shouldn't be.
If you can, buy a machine built before 1980. If it's still working 50 years after it was made, it's gonna keep working. Those older machines are made with metal gears and therefore weigh a ton, so they're definitely not a good choice if you don't have a permanent setup for your machine, but it means they basically last forever. Newer machines are made with plastic parts, and no matter what you do, they will break.
Don't buy a Singer Heavy Duty. I'm sure those machines have their benefits, but they are absolutely not heavy duty. We repair more Singer Heavy Dutys than any other single model of sewing machine. If you're already stuck with a Heavy Duty, then follow my advice above even more scrupulously, and start shopping around for a replacement if you can. You can get a used sewing machine of better quality for significantly less than a new Heavy Duty.
To keep things working properly, make sure you're:
threading your machine properly
using the right kind of bobbin
adjusting your tension properly
and using the right kind of needle for the fabric you're sewing!
(These things are unlikely to break your machine, but they will keep it from sewing properly.)
Other than that, get your hands on your machine's manual and read it carefully. If you can, bring your machine in for a cleaning and adjustment now and then. Your machine will need repairs every once in a while: it's a lot of little moving parts! But these are some basic precautions you can take to avoid some common problems.

the funniest thing that always happens to me is that every time we have a customer who doesn't speak polish and they ask me if i speak english i'm like "no, i don't think i do" only to realize a few minutes later that i do, in fact, speak english
#maybe it's because i'm just always super anxious about my skills#or maybe it's the fact that it barely happens so i don't have many opportunities to talk to people in english#so when somebody asks me about it i'm always like “um i do speak english but just a little”#and yet here i am running a fucking blog where i write a lot of shitposts every single day#all of them in english#it's so funny to me cause obviously no one knows this#and i had a customer today and he bought diamond earrings for his girlfriend and our entire conversation was in english#and he even complimented me at the end which was very nice#and my manager was like “oh you speak english? i only understood him when he said bye bye” LMAO#YES LOOKS LIKE I DO SPEAK ENGLISH AFTER ALL#jdsfjewhif i'm sorry i never really talk about this but today i feel like i want to#like every single time i have a conversation in english i'm so fucking proud of myself for being brave enough to speak another language#in front of a stranger#i know i make a lot of mistakes but still#i'm always so fucking proud of myself. for no reason. i just am#anyway the guy was really nice and i guess it's safe to say he made my day#which doesn't happen very often i usually hate my customers#so yeah#i say whatever and whatever that i want*

Love my job, love my company. I only work ACA, and it is so nice that our megaphone to thousands of employees is "The patients are the point. The people are the purpose!!! If we do our job with purpose, things get better for tens of thousands of people!!!!"
I don't share my employer for a few reasons, but it is very reassuring to know we are not unusual in ACA spaces. I highly encourage you to scrutinize your options as heavily as you see fit. Good options are made to withstand your investigation bc good options want you to have agency in your care and confidence in your health literacy! Marketplace options change state to state, year to year - - check what your options are this year!

#like maam ive worked here for barely a month you know this#and my first ever shift was 8 hours and CLOSING#i did a lil bit of everything my first day why do you think im so adaptable to what you need now???#anyways i had NE help shred chicken cause we needed more and then i couldnt even use it bc we were out of the salad kit 🙃#today twas a long day#i was supposed to do subs but literally worked on salads all day cause we were so short staffed#a coworker who YESTERDAY asked for a shift today never showed up. our manager had to open and was barely through salads when i got there#(3 hours after open)#me and manager tackled customer service and did as many tasks as we could (specifically distress and make salads)#(i learned how to do temps)#morning cook stayed late WITHOUT TAKING A BREAK to bring back some stuff we needed#closing cook got sick and left when me and NE did leaving i assume 2 store managers (maybe just 1) and one coworker to close#we so short staffed they had a job fair JUST FOR OUR DEPARTMENT.#anywho#ive also been up technically since 1-2am. i got extra 1 hour between then and 5:30am before i had to get up. i went to bed at 9pm#so. ive been tired all day but since i dont have work tomorrow im gonna stay up late and chill#amber's shit you can ignore

just reflecting today on the 7th poured drink tonight and recalling how when i was venting to my co-workers about yesterday and the panic attack i had and all that, she mentioned how I needed more help when I was drowning and i swear to you the immediate thing that came to mind when she said that was alan wake
#i haven't really made many drowning gifs have i#also i feel bad cause like. god#this is so stupid and convoluted and part of the guilt i'm carrying right now#our customer service department ended up being the straw that broke my back and made me have that panic attack/meltdown yesterday#and i try#i TRY SO HARD to have some empathy towards them cause i mean#they're the ones getting basically abused by our customers#and it hurts so much to me that i can't be more help#and specifically the situation yesterday was me having to jump in and finish something that idk took me all of ten minutes to do#after i asked for some forklift assistance that took maybe like half an hour#but i had asked my employees to get that done *last week* and they couldn't do it#and the poor customer service rep had to escalate it to the director of sales which she flaunted in myf ace#and i felt terrible when i snapped and said 'ok i'll drop everything i'm doing to help you'#when i did legit have a million other things i needed to do#i'm honest to god tempted to rate myself as unsuccessful this year just cause like#i've been having to do my own employee's jobs which is also my fault for maybe not being firm like i need to be#but anyway her saying how i was drowning of course made me think of alan which honestly made me feel a little better#cause i mean it's like nick right#if alan could get out of the dark place even though it took him 13 years maybe i can too#and also inspiring in the way that like. alan needed help and i probably need help too#i've gone to therapy twice once in person and once online and like nick it's just...#not my thing#but something both therapists seemed to concur upon was that my support system isn't the best and i also need to work on myself#and love myself and lmao that's soooooo much easier said than done#but anyway i'm sorry i should get a real diary or somethin but#something about the formatting of tagging like this is weirdly comforting

One of the funniest things about any customer service job is when customers think you are supposed to care when they threaten to do business elsewhere. No customer service agent or low level manager has ever in their life cared if you are taking your business elsewhere. You are going against a corporation in a capitalist hell that doesn't care about you at all my dude, I don't know what you think telling me "I'm gonna take my business elsewhere" is gonna change. 🤷♀️
#I'm a supervisor and sooo many of my escalations people use this as a means to get me to do what they want#when i literally can't#so when i respond with 'ok if that's your decision'#you see really quick most of them don't actually mean that they just say it to get the rep to suck up to them#because moving someplace else is a hassle they don't want either#but if you don't already know front end reps and lower level management don't really have power#our job is literally to try and see if we can help or direct you#but we don't make the decisions#if i did my decision would be to do whatever i can to get you away from me as fast as possible :)#ok rant done#customer service#work bs#flapping my wings#ugh#i need a vacation

periodically people have to be reminded that you should be against these large generative ai models because its aggregate content theft and not because of like "laziness" or whatever
#like yes the arts are wildly devalued which#goes in hand with this push to replace us en masse with ai to cut labour costs#and its disgusting to see#but if someone says its making art accessible to disabled people. and you talk about a guy who learned to draw with his feet#you need to take a good hard look at yourself#it feels bad to encourage the automation of art when in popular culture so much of our work is devalued but#as an artist!!! i am lazy. i use 3d models i trace photos i use custom brushes#sometimes you just aint drawing all that. the Laziness thing is a bad argument#whats bad is feeling entitled to Take the work of others without permission to train generative models!!! thats the problem!!!#just bc you're taking stuff en masse it doesnt make it better than stealing from one person. thats not the same thng as inspiration shut up#i think technology and tools evolve and its cool that I've found thinvs that support me as an artist#its not fucking about the machine learning its about theft how many times do we have to teach you this lesson

the fucked part of this update is that i remember back in ye olden days when the dashboard layout was much more similar to the current look, except it had all the stuff on the right side bar (where the current dash layout has the reccommended blogs and the tumblr radar iirc) and we still had the top bar with the little icons, and the stuff on the sidebar wasnt NEARLY as cluttered as it is now. and i remember when they got rid of it in favor of the top bar with little drop down menus and everyone fucking LOATHED IT, we were all clamoring for it to be rolled back. and they somehow managed to finally put the blog info back into a sidebar like we wanted all those years ago and they somehow fucked it up so bad that we all hate it and want the old layout back . what a website
#i feel like if we jsut had the options to pick and choose what was displayed on the sidebars#it would make life a lot easier. like i honestly dont personally hate this new look#its a lot more reminiscent of the old dashboard i loved so much#but i do understand why so many people hate it and i really just wish#more websites let us customize the UI to our liking a bit more#like idgaf about having shit about post+ and tumblr blaze in my right sidebar on the activity page#but i would LOVE to be able to have other options there instead.#and honestly what is stopping them from letting us upload custom dash background images. cmon now.#i miss the fuckin stylish skin i used to use with its galaxy pattern.........feel like pure shit want her back

Is it bad to say that I just want a conclusion? Is it bad to say that I'd rather something just end badly so I can move on than to end well but be drawn out for who even knows how long? I'd just like to move on, for better or worse. I'd like to stop worrying.
#personal#my cat is coming into technically his third night at the vet#hes 14 or 15 years old and hes been hospitalized for constipation at least 5 times in as many years#they told me this time that theres a large mass of hair making up part of the blockage#which couldve been a factor for all of the other times as well#they told me last night that our options were sedate him to give oral meds and hope they work#or sedate him at a specialty center to perform surgery#or euthanize#.#and they said he was being more cooperative today and theyd try to keep going without sedation#but they had to keep him another night#i called out of work today in case i got a bad call#but now what? do i call out of work again tomorrow?#do i resign myself that the potential 'we're sorry there was just no more we could do' could come while im with a customer?#i want them to give me an answer even if its bad#i just want to finish this#obviously i want my cat back and home and sleeping next to me#but i want *an* answer

guh i didnt get to complain abt this at work but while i was in reptiles rearranging stuff someone walked over talking on their phone goofin off and offhandedly said 'oh that geckos dead, how sad.' like not sad at all just like. lackadaisical. while i am two feet away staring at them bc i know the gecko is not dead bc i Just saw it and they dont make eye contact so i cant even like. try to say anything. and they clearly didnt say anything to any other employee when i brought it up after they left they just thought they saw a dead animal in a pet store and like. didnt care? and im so sjdfg irritated and baffled.

sometimes people will ask me about working in a library and I have to find a gentle way to tell them they literally would not last a day working in a public library
#i do not care what customer service jobs youve worked before. nothing will prepare you for library patrons#some real things from the log we keep of problems: a woman bringing in a squirrel#several people bringing snakes#a man being tazed repeatedly by cops in the middle of the room#today a guy set the building next door on fire then came in here and the cops had to come arrest him#unfortunately there are many overdoses in our bathrooms#sometimes people will just start fist fighting each other right in front of everyones books#sooooooooooo oh sooooooooooo many creepy people calling us repeatedly to masturbate to women reading things out loud#something that happens shockingly often is patrons typing their email address into google and screaming at us bc were hiding their emails#or like they dont know their password so the scream at us for not having that#a gentleman once began flinging feces at employees at one branch#once i was leaving work and someone FILMED ME and we literally never found out why#I've known many many people whove been stalked by patrons. one who had her house broken into#its a labor of love

Gonna be honest the longer i spend in adulthood and the more unfair shit i have to deal with, the more impatient and intolerant i become of other perfectly functional and capable adults whining that life isnt fair (and implying that they dont have to try because of it).
No its not fair, but you know what? Its not fair for anybody. That doesnt mean you deserve extra special treatment to make it fair for you only which will only realistically come at the expense of others. Crying to other people actively cleaning up other peoples messes that it's unfair to ask you to clean up other peoples messes isnt as revolutionary as you think it is. Yes it sucks, but you can deal with it like the rest of us.
Not to sound like your dad but there is a point where you just have to suck it up and deal with it. No it's not fun, no it's not fair, yes it sucks, but youre not a child bro, suck it UP.
The amount of fully functional adults out there who act like children when the world doesnt function on fairy tale rules is truly baffling. And ive noticed that theres ALWAYS this weird implication to their logic and reactions that its perfectly fine for other people to take on MORE bullshit if it means they dont have to deal with anything they deem unfair.
Obligatory reading comprehension question: what does the use of the term "perfectly functional and capable adults" imply about the type of people OP is referring to in this 30 second vent post? Is the OP really referring to legitimate disability accommodations or desolate life circumstances, or people who have every ability and resource at their disposal to deal with BS and choose not to because its a little hard?
#i had so many coworkers like this at the mall#the managers and I would have to do like double our job descriptions because the keyholders would whine like this#and like yes i get that retail sucks#but we all have to deal with shitty customers whether we like it or not#im all for complaining about them but im not for acting like you should get#extra special treatment exemptions from them on the basis that they make you uncomfortable#they make everybody uncomfortable!! shut the fuck up and grow up!!

Something I really really really wish customers would understand is like. How much really dumb pointless shit matters to corporate. How if you liked your service please don't leave a review with anything other than 100% across the board because giving us an 80% or a 70% just makes our review score stay the same or drops it. It's never good enough and they're always barking at us to do better no matter how good we do it doesn't amount to anything unless we're at 90-100% . Please if you do surveys only ever leave 100% if your happy with your service please I beg you
#having my manager be like 'oh make sure to greet people make sure to ask for emails' i do#god damn i do i bust my ass and she still has to like 'talk' to me abt my rating going down its not my fault if customers just dont coopera#i could get on my knees and lick thier boots and theyd still give our store a 70% rating . not my problem#if you shop somewhere frequently and they want you to sign up for whatever just make a dummy account or whatever because they#judge us based on how many of those we get . its so annoying#people wonder why cashiers are so dead and emotionless everywhere#its because no matter how good we are its never enough its hard not to become defeated and jist give up#your reward for digging fast is a bigger shovel or whatever
