Elves of the Rift: Part 1

Starting the Rift overhaul with the elves you're mostly likely to see loitering around Riften's marketplace.

Brand-Shei

Brand-Shei is a merchant who was raised by Argonians in Black Marsh. I gave him some Argonian-style tattoos (with coloration inspired by ESO's Bright Throat Tribe) as well as a hairstyle inspired by one from TES III. If you look closely, you'll see his earrings are actually some re-purposed Argonian horn rings :)

Marise Aravel

Marise is a food vendor who you might fetch some ice wraith teeth for. She will have a custom hat option that shows her hair.

Nivenor

Nivenor is Bolli's wife. She is a rather snooty Bosmer who loves the finer things in life (and hates poor people.)

Dinya

Dinya is a priestess of Mara, married to Maramal. I tried to keep the gist of her Vanilla look, with short hair and yellow markings around her eyes.

more concept sketches: The Doom of the Noldor as a three-act ballet!

It'd be impossible to adapt the entire Silmarillion into a single ballet, but I think this is the closest you can get to reducing the plot to its bare minimum. more details below!

Act I: (from top to bottom) Feänor and the silmarils, Mandos, Nerdanel, the Kinslaying at Alqualondë

Act II: (from top to bottom, left to right) Fingon and Maedhros, Turgon and Elenwe, Idril and Maeglin, Galadriel

Act III: (from top to bottom) Fingolfin facing Morgoth, surely that is a Silmaril that shines now in the West?, Maedhros and Maglor

Been doing some sketching lately~ I have the Silmarillion on the brain~

This last one is evidence of the sad fact of smudging that occurs with soft lead in a well travelled sketchbook~

(which I could fix by removing the page or applying setting spray, but I haven't bothered 😅)

Also-

That one with Maedhros standing next to a young lady with hobbit on her other side- is from when I was reading through What the hell is happening? By Leader_in_red? And I was thinking 'what would the height difference actually be? If Maedhros is 7 ft tall, Hazel is normal human height, and then we have hobbits in the mix-

Anyway,

I don't think I got the heights quite right, but it was fun trying to imagine just how insanely tall Maedhros actually is. (he's not weirdly tall by elf standards if you look at the elf average height which is around six feet, but still. I like height differences. It's just so fun to draw :)

I think 'Leader in red' was the username. If it isn't I'll just edit this later :)

people are still whining about some rings of power elves having short hair? they're still complaining that the actor playing celebrimbor is too old?

That has honestly got to be some of the silliest shit I've seen about this show. Tolkien never said that all elves had long flowing hair and we have no canonical description of celebrimbor.

Pick something reasonable to be a hater about at least.

ranting on discord abt the rings of power costuming/armor i have literally no respect for it

Weird confession, probably an unpopular opinion, but: I actually like a lot of the concepts and basic designs behind the costumes in the Rings of Power series more than I like the concepts and basic designs behind the costume in the PJ Lord of the Rings films (with the costumes for the rohirrim and the people in Gondor being the exception). Don’t get me wrong, the costumes in the PJ Lord of the Rings series look amazing. They’re gorgeous and, on the whole, better made than the Rings of Power costumes. It’s just that the there’s something very dungeons and dragonsy about the PJ Lord of the Rings costumes (especially for the elves), and I know that’s because there was a twenty year feedback loop where there was a slight DnD-ness to the PJ Lord the the Rings elf outfits which then just became standard Elf Clothes in LOTR fanart which then fed back into the people making art for the DnD handbooks, but still. And I’ll admit I’m biased—it just so happens that that aesthetic is one I don’t particularly like. So seeing the costumes in Rings of Power make a clean break from that was really refreshing. And they mostly look like clothes people would wear. And I love the ideas in the designs! Elrond’s brown cloak with the feathers? That’s a sweet little tribute to his mom. The gold dust makeup on Disa’s hands and her robe (which honestly looked better in action than it did in the promo shots)? Neat concept. Tar-Miriel’s crown (and all of her outfits, actually)? Stunning. I’m in love. I just wish the designers and costume makers had been given all the time they needed to really make every costume look as good as they probably looked in their heads.

my unpopular opinion is that I’m not inherently against short hair on elves. my headcanon is that most elves have long hair and hair length isn’t gendered, but I think that giving a few elves shorter hair would be a neat visual distinction

I really honestly hate the implication that she’s this amazing archer (which personally you’d think would require a bit of hand-eye coordination and a modicum of wrist stability) but she’s somehow too incompetent to trim her own bangs?????? I love elf mage best and will always recommend it but if you want to do a "mage for templars" run, human would be a good choice. Amell is canonically Hawke's cousin, thus of noble birth.

If you want to do something lore heavy, do the Dalish elf origin over city elf because that's where all the meat is imho

I think Aeducan and Brosca does the noble/commoner story better than Cousland and Tabris but people like the latter two best because they are more directly connected to the story.
