The Seven and The Boys with forced supe reader(like Billyā€™s little sister as revenge for billy and the boys constantly causing problems)
Rouge powers readerā€”ā€”ā€”ā€”powers turn on and off randomly
can absorb life forces and powers(which they can steal(albeit accidentally))
Very stubborn and sarcastic just like her brother
Home lander is probably extra yandere for tons of reasons and keeps the reader in a glass room(enclosure or whatever)(think a zoo exhibit or big aquarium tank without waterā€”ā€” that one room from You or the glass apartment In Supernova for the kid with the same sort of powers)so that he can see his pet/prize/whatever tf he plans to do with them
-šŸŒ‘
I keep seeing this as a full blown fic in my mind but I donā€™t have the skills to pull it off so Iā€™d like to see other peopleā€™s takes on the idea!

įƓā˜… I read your req and I'm intrigued so this is my attempt on it, hope it meets your expectations. This is like a full on story lol (angst, gore, death, killing, looooots of cursing like I'm not even exaggerating, homelander being homelander, some fluff at the end?)
Parts: 2
Tumblr media
With your brother's reputation, it's hard to ever live your whole life without the constant need to look over the shoulder. You always liked to tell yourself that after cutting ties with him, it will ensure you your safety, but those words were nothing more than just lies.
Losing Becca changed him completely. You could still recall the last time you spoke to him, the talk regarding your concern escalating into a heated argument.
"I'm telling you! You have no chance against a literal superpowered person! You'll get yourself killed!" You raised your voice, standing on the other side of the kitchen counter.
"Yeah, but this ain't a life worth livin' for anyways" He brushed your words off like he usually does. You watch in disbelief as he pours himself alcohol.
"Fuck you. You're such an asshole..." You said and he nods at you as he lifts his glass up.
"I'll drink to that" You scoff when he actually drank from his cup, the sound of him sipping ticking you off.
"Okay, fine, get yourself killed! But I won't stand to be here when it happens. I want you out of my life. I never wanna see you. I never even want to hear from you again! You're... you're..." You gasp as you start to sob. He turns to you, nothing but a blank expression on his face.
"Hey... take it easyā€”"
"No! Don't you fucking tell me to take this shit easy when you just admit to me that you're willing to throw away your life for some blonde american supe! You are a shitty brother! You're just like dad!"
"Don't you fuckin' compare me to that cunt!"
"I fucking said what I said!"
"Fuck you!"
"FUCK YOU!!"
The sound of your heavy breathing filled the kitchen. You could feel your chest rising and falling, your face burning from the overwhelming anger. Butcher sighs at the sight of you as he looks away with his eyes closed.
"You don't know half the things I know sis... you have to understand..."
"No... don't bother telling me. I already know that you'll never change..." You grabbed your things and before he could stop you, you left the house, slamming the door while you were at it.
For the next 8 years, you would find yourself living somehow a happier life. Making friends, going through relationships and heartbreaks, getting multiple jobs to pay for your apartment. It was like an ocean wave since it was never steady but you couldn't deny you've never felt more alive.
However, even on these good days, there were nights you'd find yourself waking up to nightmares. Nightmares of your brother dying. Nightmares of being abandoned. It always left you covered in cold sweats and sometimes you couldn't go back to sleep so you'd just sit by the window or watch some videos online to keep your mind off it.
Even though you convince yourself you were happier.
You never felt secure.
You always felt like something was out to get you.
Especially after you saw the news of him theorised to have killed the senior vice president working at Vought. You couldn't bother to remember her name cause the image of your brother was hauntingly enough. That's when you realised, if they were after him, what if they were also after you?
You stood at the counter of the restaurant you worked at. The job was new as you interviewed for the role of the cashier. Though all these days of dealing with rude customers and having to force a smile is making you want to rethink a different job. Just then, the door to the restaurant opens.
"Welcome!" You said as cheerfully as you can. Instead of searching for a table to sit, the customer approaches you.
"I'm sorry but where's the restroom? I really need to go" The customer spoke, he was wearing an awfully lots of layers, even shades indoors.
"It's just at the back to the right, there's a huge sign, it's hard to miss it" You smiled and the customer stares at you for a while before nodding.
"Thank you"
Finally, he leaves and you couldn't help but be relieved. Why were you holding your breath in the first place? After a couple more hours of standing around and smiling, your shift was done. You did your daily duties and cleaned up the place, making sure it was clean before you leave.
"Bye (Y/N)! Don't forget about our hangout this Friday night!" Your friend spoke as she leaves first.
"Trust me I'm looking forward to it!" You replied before heading to the back of the building to throw the trash away.
You were on your way to the huge bins until you felt the trash bag become lighter. You stare down and was annoyed the second you saw that the bag had tore. It's settled, you're getting a new job after you get your salary. You crouched down and tried to think of ways to solve the issue.
Once you stood up, you felt a sharp pain on your neck. Before you could even do anything to find the source of the pain, you collapsed. The last thing you could feel before becoming unconscious was the touch of someone catching you.
....
"Will it work?"
........
"We've only tested on rats. We're not sure sir"
...........
"Do I have to rephrase? If she dies, you fucking die with her, you understand?"
...............
"Yes sir"
.....................
"Good. Now do what you're only good for, you fucking worthless piece of shit"
...............................
Lights... knives... syringes... you slowly awoke on the floor as faint images of what you would recall as a memory began flashing in your head. Did that happen? It felt real. You opened your eyes and blinked a couple of time to register the room you were in.
You were... in a cage?
You looked around, the walls and floors made of white marbles which made it cold when your skin made contact with it. Now that you realised, you were no longer in your uniform, you seemed to be wearing some kind of gown patients would wear for surgery.
"Morning sunshine!" Your body jumped when you heard a familiar voice, a voice you only heard on the tv or radio shows. You stare at him as he walks to the center, a few feet from your cage.
It was Homelander. You never thought the day would come where you would be face to face to the person behind the reasons of your brother's rampage.
"Did you rest well?" He asks, an eary grin on his face. You looked around the inside of your glass cage.
"Couldn't you have given me a mattress?" You said. Your concern catching him a bit off guard but he didn't show it.
"Well, we tried to give you something more comfortable to sleep on but it seems like anyone who tried to even touch you ended up well... what's the word for it... withered. Dead. Nothing but a corpse suck dry of it's life" He said but you had no idea what any of his words meant.
"Is this some joke?" He chuckles.
"No. No joke (Y/N). I'm simply just giving my hypothesis on your new powers"
Powers? You have to be high right?
Did whatever pain that you felt was the mark of your death?
Is this some sick twisted illusion of yours created in hell?
"Yeah right... and I'm fucking Beyonce. Would you like to see my collection of Grammys?" You said sarcastically, clearly not taking anything seriously.
Homelander doesn't say anything but just laugh, since you were clearly convinced this was hell and that you were dead, you laughed along with him. He trembles his shoulders as if he's cold, that devilish grin still on his face.
"Wooo! You're a jokester aren't you (Y/N)? I know I'm just gonna love you. How about I bring you a gift as a symbol of our blossoming friendship?" He asked but he had already left the room. Your answer never even needed at all.
As your laughter died down, you were left alone in the room. You felt high. Too realistically high. Were you pumped with drugs? Shit... you grabbed your head as you tried to process the feeling until you heard the sound of a high pitched scream. You turn your head to find it to be your friend from work. She was shoved into the room and right when she stood up to leave, the door was shut.
"Let me the fuck out! You fucking bitch! You promised me weed!" She slammed on the door a couple of times after attempting to twist the doorknob open.
"Cleo?" She turns to you, her masacra ruined from her tears.
"(Y/N)? Holy shit what happened to your hair?" She said and you were confused until you checked to see the front strands of your hair now dyed white.
Okay now what in the actual fuck is happening...
"I don't know...? Why are you here?" You questioned.
"Some fucker promised me weed for some cash. I should have known better when I saw how cheap it was" She sighs as she sits against the door.
Suddenly the glass door on your cage sprung open. The two of you exchanged confused expressions. Is this some kind of trick? You wondered but either way you stepped out from your cage and began to approach your friend. She sighs as she curls up into a ball.
"What the fuck even is this place...?" She asks after you finally sat down beside her. You rubbed her arm to provide some comfort.
"I don't know... this feels real and fake at the same time. Hey, if by any chance we were in a puzzle just like in Saw, how much do you wanna bet who'd winā€”?" You nudged her playfully but instead of getting a response. She falls over.
Her face was pale white. Eyes dilated. The veins on her body growing visibly purple. The sight left you in shock and you quickly grabbed her by the shoulder to jerk her a few times. No words left her mouth except sounds of gasping, as if the air was getting sucked out of her lungs.
"Cleo! What the fuck! Holy fucking shit!" You cursed and it didn't take long until her body grows limp. Like a skeleton with a thin layer of skin left.
Afraid the same would happen to you, you quickly ran into your cage. You sat at the corner, trying your hardest not to look at your friend. That was real. This isn't some stupid trick set up by Satan. This is fucking real.
But why is this happening?
Why you?
The glass door slammed shut and the noise made your body jump. The door to the room opened but got stuck at the weight of your friend's corpse. You could hear the sound of disgust come from Homelander as he ends up kicking body aside to be able to open the door fully.
"So... did you like my gift?"
"What the fuck did you do? Did you poison her?" You said which he seemed offended at.
"Me? Oh please, I can shoot fucking lasers out of my eyes and I choose to poison some fucking nobody? I mean look at her" He chuckles, his eyes staring at the corpse of what was your friend.
His tone and words growing a small wave of anger within your chest.
"What do you want from me?"
"You know what I want" He said, the smile on his face gone. He was now serious. His gaze cold enough to send shivers down your body.
"(Y/N) Butcher. Butcher. I didn't know he had a little sister" He took a step closer, then another, until he was face to face to the glass, staring down at your figure hiding away in the corner.
"He really doesn't get scared huh? Not afraid of death, to take a life, not even me. And well... since he fucking hates supes so much, then I might as well make his beloved sister one. If I can't strike fear in him, you will" Homelander spoke, the corner of his lips twisting into a grin. As if all of this was bringing him some sick enjoyment.
"Everyone will be the pawn and you'll be the queen... so save your strength. You're gonna need it sweetheart" He turned around and as he leaves, he stares at the corpse for a quick moment. Even from inside the cage you could hear him shout for the people working to clean the body.
Fuck... this cannot be your life now...
You're now an animal kept in a cage.
Hours progressed to days then months. The only thing keeping you entertained was... the toilet? Aside from that was the visits Homelander would pay you every now and then to make sure you were alive. It almost seemed like he had expected you to be dead by now but you weren't, which he's impressed about.
You laid on the ground, staring at the ceiling. You were bored so you decided to try to count from 1 to 10000 this time. Just as you got to 482, the door opened and you turned to see it wasn't Homelander but rather a worker. Assuming he's just here to clean, you turned back to the ceiling to continue counting.
"Pssh, ma dame, do you hear me?" He knocks on the glass, his french accent caught your attention.
"I don't care. I'm not gonna strip for you"
"Nono! That's not why I'm here, your brother, Billy Butcher? He sent me here" His name striking something in you. You got up as your eyes are slightly widened.
"He knows I'm here?"
"Yes... he's here as well. He's gonna try to get you out of here"
Just as he finishes talking, the glass door sprung open. He gets in the cage and reaches for you but right as you reach for his hand, you remembered you weren't the same anymore, you were cursed, so you quickly pull your hand away. Your action causes the man to tilt his head in confusion.
"Do not worry, I'm not here to hurt you" He tries to take a few steps closer but you quickly stepped back.
"No.... no stop! That's enough!" You raised your hands gesturing him to stand where he's at.
"Don't touch me..." You added and he stares at you for a moment before taking a few steps back until he's out of the cage.
"Okay... but you must follow me. We don't have much time left" He said, walking out of the room and you hesitated for a while before following after him.
When walking down the hallway, you couldn't help but look around the area. This was your first time seeing the place you've been trapped inside for supposedly months. As you followed the strange man who saved you, you noticed that he seemed to be talking to someone over his earpiece. Was it Butcher?
After managing to sneak past several guards and having a few close calls, you two finally made it out from one of the back doors. You hurried as you followed the man somewhere. You couldn't believe it. The feel of the wind and the smell of the grass was making you wish you appreciated the outdoor more.
"Were you noticed?" His friend who's been on the look out asked. He shakes his head.
"No" After hearing his reponse, his friend turns to look at you.
"I'm M.M.... C'mon, your brother put in a lot to save you" He began walking away and the two of you simply went along.
He did?
"I haven't introduced myself. I'm Frenchie. It's nice to meet you" The man who saved you earlier said with a smile and you weakly smile back.
The moment the three of you reached a van parked in a safe area. The door slide open and your eyes widened once you were locked eyes with someone familiar. Yet he looked so much different now. He grew a beard. You had to admit, it made him look less ugly.
"(Y/N)..." He got out of the van and was ready to embrace you but you quickly avoided his grasp. This causes him to stand there with his arms hanging there awkwardly.
"Ooookay.... get in" M.M told Frenchie and they did just that, sliding the door close to give you both the privacy.
"All these years and you still hate your ol' brother" He jokes as he drops his hands down to his sides, but it was clear that he was upset at your actions and trying to hide it.
"Don't touch me"
"I got it"
The two of you stood there and you were staring at him a little too hard. Thoughts racing in your head like a racetrack. What the fuck has he been up to these years and how did he even find you?
"So... are we jus' gonna stand here and wait for 'em to realise you're missin'?" He nods at the facility nearby and you sigh.
"You're taking me home" You walked over to the passenger seat but the sound of Butcher clicking his tongue made you stop halfway in your tracks. Now you were standing in front of the van.
"Not gonna happen. Is your head loose of screws sis? They know who you are now, which means they know where you live. You're gonna be stayin' with me" He said.
Shit... there's really no chance of a normal life now. You really are cursed.
"Stay with you? With these guys?" You point at the van and from the front of the vehicle, you could see his friends all huddled in the back, the whole time they've been secretly listening to the conversation but once you pointed at them, they tried to act as though they haven't been doing so.
"They can protect you"
"I don't need protecting. The last thing I need is someone doing that"
"Oh really? Then mind sharing your experience in there? Was it a luxury? How much longer do you think you could have lasted if I hadn't found you" He took a few steps closer and you gave him a warning look.
"You're my sister... you think a few fights is gonna change that?" He tried reaching for your shoulder and you quickly dodged it. Failing to notice, tears were beginning to well up in your eyes because deep inside, you were desperately in need of comfort, a hug, anything physical but you couldn't even have that.
"You can't touch me... nobody can.... f-fuck... I killed my friend just by touching her..." You began to sob, your hands grabbing onto your face in an attempt to hide your expression. A frown appears on his face.
"What the fuck did they do to you...?"
"They made me a freak! They gave me these fucked up powers!! I don't want this...!" You cried, wishing this was another of your nightmares and that none of this was real.
"It's okay... come here..." He began to step closer to you but you were too numb from the feeling to even react.
Taking off his coat, he puts it securely around you before wrapping you in his arms. For the first time in months, you finally felt the presence of another person's embrace. The warmth felt so good. It was like you were melting from it. Your sobs grew weak as you nuzzle onto his chest, the fabric separating the contact of your skin with his. This was everything you needed right now.
"We'll get through this... these powers of yours ain't gonna scare me away" He said, rubbing your back gently.
"Thank you..." You muttered.
After you escaped and made it safely away from your prison. Homelander was alerted of your escape a few hours later. He arrives at the facility, walking down the hallway as the doctors walking by were scared to see him and trying their best to avoid his sight. Once he walks in the office of the head security, the man sprung up almost instinctly.
"Sir" He greets him. Homelander doesn't say anything but stare at him... before breaking into a smile.
"Great job, at least you're good at failing at your job. Now show me" He walks over to the guard's side who's hurrying to click a few things on his computer to show him what he came here for.
"The tracker we planted in her is working well and fine. She's currently in a vehicle heading somewhere"
"Good... it's like sending a cat to a bunch of rats" Homelander then gave the man a strong pat on the shoulder.
"Do we go after them sir?"
"No, keep an eye on her for now. I'll tell you when the time is ready" Without any further discussion, he left the office. A plan already set in his mind.
(I might make a part 2 but I'm not sure if anyone would be interested, it'll be sort of fluff where the boys figure out her powers, some angst? Idk, tell me if you think I should)

HIHIHI, I was wondering if you could match me up with a Hazbin Hotel, Helluva Boss, and a Sally face character? IF THAT'S TOO MANY YOU CAN JUST DO ONE OR THE OTHER
OOKAY so, basic info, yappa yappa, I'm not good at thiisiss
My name is Sophie, I am Hispanic though I know NOTHING about Spanish UHUSHSUšŸ¤ŗšŸ¤ŗ I and gender fluid (They/She/He), I'm a January Aquarius (if that matters), and a INTP/INFP
Personality wise : I guess I'm an ambivert? MOST OF THE TIIMMMEE I'll mirror one's personality, but in general, it depends how close I am with said person šŸ’ŖšŸ˜¼ Once you get to REALLY know me, I have little to no filter (in the right situations), I can be really sarcastic, really sexual (in a joking manner/as long as the other party is okay with it), affectionately insult, and I curse like a witch being trialed. I get irritated easily though, but I (try) to keep that to myself, being a people pleaser. Oh, I tell a joke? It's a dad joke. My love languages are gift giving, and depending on the person, a bit of physical touch (Side hugs, hand holding, ECT.)
FOR MY STYLEE... I REALLY think it's a huge mix of dark clothes: Goth, Adam Sandler, skateboard, Grunge, ECT., though I'm REALLY open minded!
I saw some people talk about their physical appearance.. SO LETS DO IITT : Brown, wavey hair that goes all the way to my lower back (I WANNA CUT IT AHHH), bangs that I absolutely DO NOT know how to style, somewhere between tan-white skin, roundish-almond, brown eyes, upper lip beauty mark, rectangular body shape with MEAT IN THE THIGHS RAHH šŸ„“šŸ– My nose is straighter than I am, y'all
I LOOVVE Wine, literally heaven on earth. I also love drawing, animating, singing, writing, doing random voice overs, doing voice impressions, music (Mostly metal, rock, Goth, alt/indie, electronic), anything horror, insects, space, reptiles, basically any animal, anatomy, origami, and some other stuff I forgot about.
Some extra stuff about mee, I am usually very closed off and try to be polite until I have a deep friendship with a person, I am THE total fucking opposite. I love the internet, it literally raised me, therefore, I will cherish it (most of the time at least). I am literally a perfectionist, like AHHHH. I am very naive, like help me, I've caused so many problems with my naiveness šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ¤ŗ
I LOVE daydreaming, why be in the real world when you can star off into space and pretend you're in another? Despite being the youngest in my family, I am surprisingly the one who acts like an older sister. I LOVE BABIES!!! Like, my step-aunt had a baby ALSO named Sofie, and I got to hold her AHSHAHHZH. I can be a bit hypersexual (FUCK YOU TRAUMA), But I know how to control it because I'm just like that šŸ’ŖšŸ˜¼šŸ‘¹
ā€”ā€”ā€”
I'm SOO sorry if this is too lengthy
I hope you're having a wonderful day/night! Thank you in advance if you DO match me with a character
HI LOVE!!!!! OFC!!2!1!1!
IVE DECIDED TO PAIR YOU WITH!!!!!!!!! ā€¦ā€¦ HUSK, LARRY JOHNSON &ā€¦.. BLITZƘ!!!
~~~~~~~~
Tumblr media
Although you donā€™t realize it at first, itā€™s really easy to get along with husk. Even if you arenā€™t drinking!!
I think your personality drew this kitty in!! Although he doesnā€™t mind the sexual jokes, he would prefer to keep them to a minimum. He loved when you are sarcastic with him- or make jokes. Thats his humor as well, and loves to indulge in someone who has similar humor!!
Although you get irritated quickly- he can tell immediately. HE KNOWS EVERYTHING. He will being you somewhere quiet/alone and away from people and talk to you about it.
He would try to help you NOT be a people pleaser, def the guy to stick up for you and tell that person to do it themselves.
Although his love language seems to be quality time- he doesnā€™t mind any!! Heā€™ll feel bad to take gifts from you tho :(
Heā€™d enjoy watching your outfits!! One day heā€™ll ask you to be goth- another adam!! He thinks anything you wear is cute on you.
If you love wine, heā€™ll MAKE sure he always has it in stock for you- let alone let anyone else order it. Probably hides it too.
Heā€™d love to hear about your interests, or new animations, or even hearing you sing!!
Even if youā€™re naive!! He will be your bodyguard. Literally might be so annoying but heā€™s up your ass.
Even if you think you have imperfections- to him you donā€™t. And he will make sure you know that!!
Tumblr media
L-L-L-LARRRY!!!
Come on. I think you and Larry would bond over your culture!! He also does NOT know any Spanish. LOSER ALERT. (Hc: he probably only understands it but fucks up pronunciation)
Your personality suits him sm. Cursing like a sailor? Him too. If you mirror his personality? Loves you. If you get close to him? Love you more. If you are sexual? Heā€™ll play back donā€™t worry!!
Style, style, style. HE LOVES IT SO MUCH OH MY GOD. Everyday he looks forward to what youā€™re gonna wear, and probably goes all googly eyes. Cause heā€™s a loser like that!!!
Heā€™ll definitely be a gift giver too, heā€™ll share his drugs (if you are into that. If not thats cool too!!) Heā€™ll paint you all the time!!
Would drink with you 24/7. He probably wouldnā€™t drink wine though. Heā€™d say itā€™s too ā€œelegantā€.
He loves your hair sm. You both have similar hair AHHH!!! he probably braided ur hair and his together once, or it got stuck head banging!!
Begs you to sing sanity falls while he paints. He absolutely LIVES to hear you sing.
Indulges in anything you like- will try it out ONCE. If he likes it, heā€™ll join you for more! Or just to spend time with you :)
Would probably love the internet too if he was raised off it.
Also sooooo naive. Two peas in a pod.
He would daydream with you. (As in he gets high and pretends heā€™s in lala land.)
Tumblr media
LAST BUT NOT LEASTā€¦. BLITZIE!!
Literally definition of ā€œhave to be close to get each others personalitiesā€
Understands that itā€™ll take time for you to show your true personality- but him too.
He will also make sarcastic remarks to you, and engage in playful banter!!! If you make a sexual joke- donā€™t think he wont flirt with you. He will.
More of a physical touch guy!! He wants to make sure you arenā€™t leaving him. Heā€™s scared to keep losing people.
Not a wine drinker- but probably an alcoholic under the covers. Or maybe he drinks a shit ton when heā€™s stressed and regrets it.
LOVES your thighs. Would eat them!
At first he thought you were insane, but slowly started to love your style- and he now sometimes dresses in it. Even while sneaking to the human realm!
Definitely not an art driven guy. Heā€™s bland but he gotta work! And on that note, has BEGGED you to join !!! And if you did- heā€™d get your art and use that to lure victims. Play guitar? Slash them behind a tree. Sing? They die backstage. Photography/Drawings/Animations? Once they leave into an alley they are done for!!
Will probably want to start a family with you- or hope you can at least get through to loona. He cherishes her soooo much!!
~~~
HI HUN. I MADE SURE I GOT TO YOURS CUS YOU WERE ALL THE WAY AT THE BEGINNING!!!! I HOPE THIS WAS OKAY :3

I would very much like to see the experience of Tucker introducing Poppy to Reservoir Dogs. I live that kind of stuff. Before he passed, I introduced my dad to RWBY because we had already been RvB fans together for years, and during COVID I introduced my aunt and sister to RWBY and we all keep up with it. Needless to say, I love that kind of stuff, and it'd be neat to see Tucker experience that. Bonus if Junior is there too cuz 20 years from now I want my kids seeing RvB
(I'm sorry to hear about your dad, but glad to know you could share things together like that. My dad died several years ago, and many of the movies I enjoy I watched because he showed them to me, and as I got older, I would share new things with him. I still have my mom, and we enjoy either re-watching movies we've loved for years, or me showing her something new)
I wish I had the time/energy to draw out all the interactions I have in mind for Poppy and the others, but I do indeed have a lot planned! Poppy was meant to be the new Red Team member, and because Simmons so rarely gets to make any new friends, I thought it would be funny if in the beginning, Sarge is like- "Look boys, we got a new Red! She's a real firecracker!". Simmons' internal knee-jerk reaction is KILL-DIE-HATE-DEATH-MURDER-DESTROY (because that's HIS father-figure that he also tried to bury alive one time, back off!). Then Poppy has ONE conversation with him about the Ewoks Cartoon, and Simmons just goes- "Oh, sibling?". Yes, sibling! It also helps later when Gene shows back up; Poppy can tell them apart just fine- "They don't even sound the same. Simmons sounds like Simmons. Gene sounds like an obnoxious little dipshit".
I wanted to have a few different interactions with Poppy and everybody else, to show how they would get along, and how they would argue (because that's just the fun with all these goobers! they love each other, and they WILL bicker constantly). Tucker becoming Poppy's first friend in the group (besides Sarge) wasn't planned, but then it was accidentally cute? She first meets him when he arrives to do some special training as a favor to Sarge, but he immediately trips and falls down a hill. Poppy is the only one around, so when she helps him up, he doesn't say right away WHY he's there (a bit embarrassed). She introduces herself with her first name, and he does the same- Lavernius. It eventually comes out that yes, he was here to help with the same "Freelancer Training" that Wash put him through, and Poppy is nice enough not to tell everybody he ate dirt 10 minutes ago. They then proceed to get along, because a couple of the others training under Sarge try to give Poppy a hard time, and Tucker gives her some fun suggestions as come-backs (Mr Quick-Witted, Mr Sarcastic). She tells him- "You're funny!", and it takes a sec for Tucker to process that- "I... I am?". Most people just groan and complain about his jokes, but they are vibing!
When Poppy officially becomes part of the group, Tucker gets to catch her up on everything (who has what annoying habit, etc), and at last, somebody new to show Reservoir Dogs to! This is like having a new friend you get to show all your favorite stuff to! Tucker truly has incredible depth as a character, he's smart and clever, he carries so much responsibility, and he CARES a LOT about other people. When he jokes about being important, it is usually just false bravado... but then he actually IS important, VERY IMPORTANT. Which is why he struggles with not feeling good enough, falling back on his own annoying habits. Tucker realizes Poppy has issues with feeling comfortable just being HERSELF, and losing the group of Reds and Blues who used to be her friends (Flag Zealots who ran out of ammo, and started harmlessly pulling pranks on each other, mostly fighting over who got to keep Poppy on their team). They both just make each other feel welcomed in a very simple and easy way.
In the larger part of my story-line, it takes a while, but they DO find Junior again. Poppy has heard so much about him from Tucker, she's more than happy to really get to know him. Poppy is very good at making Junior feel accepted right away (the kind of person who can chill with kids, talk about stuff sort of on the same level, but is also very comforting and supportive, a balance of a cool friend who will still be responsible).

Book review: Stella Maris, by Cormac McCarthy
By Stuart Kelly
Published 16th Nov 2022, 16:38 BST
Updated 16th Nov 2022, 16:45 BST
t is a curious kind of question to ask, but what kind of a book is Stella Maris? In a daring move, the publishers brought out Cormac McCarthyā€™s new novel The Passenger last month, and then this other new work this month. I have known of novels ā€“ often science fiction ā€“ which are scheduled at six month intervals. But this is unique, particularly because McCarthy is such a renowned figure. So what is this book?
It is not a sequel to The Passenger. It is not a parallel text, telling the same events from a different perspective. It is not really part of a literary diptych, as it is stylistically very different indeed ā€“ it would be like having a diptych with one half from the Baroque period and the other half in startling Cubism. Is it, perhaps, a pendant to the first novel; or a ravelling up of unanswered question? Not really. The publishers have opted for ā€œcodaā€ which seems as good a word as any. I suppose I would describe the relationship between Stella Maris and The Passenger as akin to symbiotic. Now, having read Stella Maris, I went back and looked over passages of The Passenger, and they appeared in a different light, like changing the angle of a mirror. Likewise, The Passenger sets up some of the mythology which Stella Maris expands.
It is, whatever it is, quite remarkable. As with only a few other authors ā€“ Roberto Bolano, Brian Catling ā€“ it has the distinction of having given me bad dreams. Scratch that: nightmares. I mean that as a compliment. The Passenger introduced Western, a marine salvage diver who turns fugitive. We learned that his father worked on the Manhattan Project, that his mother died when he was young, and that his sister, Alicia, is both a genius and insane. There were also dark hints from Westernā€™s roguish friends that he was in love with his sister. Western is not just a fugitive from nefarious forces with inexplicable agendas, but a fugitive from his own past. In Stella Maris we get Aliciaā€™s full-on flight from reality itself.
ā€œStella Marisā€ is a ā€œnon-denominational facility and hospice for the care of psychiatric medical patientsā€. A note, dated October 1972, reports that Case 72-118 (is that a nod to how many patients were admitted that year?) is 20, Jewish/Caucasian, female, arrived with $40,000, is a doctoral student in mathematics, has been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and has been a resident on two previous occasions. At least one of my hunches from reviewing The Passenger proved to be right. She is not, we find out, actually called Alicia, but changed her name by deed poll using forged documents from Alice.
Alicia, to use her chosen name, is caustic, wry, rebarbative, sarcastic and dismissive. She is also phenomenally clever, and the book takes in topology, physics, ethics, Schopenhauer, Grothendieck, religion, music and at times wonders if mathematics is something we impose on the universe or a set of truths that would exist without any consciousness to comprehend them. She has a pleasing disregard for Carl Jung. It is pretty heady stuff, and one can see that McCarthy has made good use of his time at the Santa Fe Institute for multidisciplinary research. Alicia revels in being a paradox ā€“ that she was sane enough to know she had to go to an insane asylum. She certainly does not go easy on her psychiatrist. (A slightly indulgent anecdote: when I had had my insides visiting the outside world, I developed delirium from the painkillers, so a psych was sent. My Dad arrived and the ward sister told him I was seeing the psych and he said ā€œPoor sodā€. She replied, ā€œNo, heā€™s in very good handsā€. Dad said, ā€œI wasnā€™t speaking about Stuart.ā€) It is not so much that this Alice has fallen down a rabbit hole, she excavated the rabbit hole with her fingernails and built a labyrinth at the bottom for good measure.
Formally, the book is only the interchanges between Alicia and Dr Cohen (with the exception of the fake document about Stella Maris on the first page). The reader has to be nimble in not skipping, although the longer disquisitions are usually Alicia. This form is reminiscent of the Greek stichomythia, to use a technical term, which in tragedies in particular uses alternating lines of dialogue to emphasise the underlying conflicts. One of the few books I know in a similar form is William Gaddisā€™s equally difficult JR. So, from the very first page, we get: ā€œHow are you? Are you all right?ā€ ā€œAm I all right.ā€ ā€œYes.ā€ ā€œIā€™m in the looney binā€. She is a master of negation: ā€œIā€™m not really seriousā€. ā€œOhā€. ā€œAliciaā€™s okay. I prefer it to Henriettaā€. ā€œYouā€™re not being serious againā€. ā€œNoā€.
Aliciaā€™s one condition is that they do not speak about her brother, which they duly do. She tells us about her hallucinations ā€“ the Thalidomide Kid and his vaudeville entourage from The Passenger ā€“ and her self-awareness about them, which includes using maths to figure out their heights and being sceptical about them having any meaning whatsoever. In some ways the reference to Greek tragedy is key. Western and Alicia are a modern day Orestes and Elektra, siblings from a cursed family, fleeing Furies. The two together, for two doomed not to be together, are a staggering achievement.

More ramblings about my Steveā€™s sister oc feel free to ignore
Her name is Aria Juliette Harrington, her and Steve are twins and she was raised in England with their mother and stepfather.
Mr Harrington was only married to their mother for a few years, and Steve was mostly raised in England even after the divorce. He faked an American accent when he moved in with his dad and eventually just sorta, forgot his original accent. Aria teases him for it endlessly.
When Steveā€™s dad got remarried and decided to start a business, he wanted the perfect family image and that didnā€™t include being a deadbeat dad and a divorcee, so he fought for custody of Steve (read: bribed several officials and social services) and threatened Steve to pretend his family didnā€™t exist, and to call his new stepmum mother.
Aria and Steve remained as close as they could, only seeing each other on holidays and communicating through letters.
Aria is, as Steve would put it, batshit insane. She forms judgements of people super quickly and holds grudges like you wouldnā€™t believe. She does NOT like Nancy or Jonathan after Steve told her what went down and no amount of Steve telling her that theyā€™re cool now will change her mind.
Sheā€™s also super sweet and caring and is very maternal to their half siblings, but has a fairly short temper and while she would never turn her temper on her siblings, she has no issue with fighting anyone else.
Sheā€™s been to see several therapists and theyā€™ve all mentioned some stuff about a personality disorder and emotional childhood neglect but her mother wonā€™t hear of it, so she just goes untreated which. Isnā€™t great.
Itā€™s especially not great when sheā€™s 19 and steals her stepdads car and hits a dude and almost kills him. No one knows what happened there apart from the judge and her lawyer, but she gets a reduced sentence and the guy himself goes to jail for a verrrry long time, and everyone just sort of decides it was for a good reason and looks the other way.
Steve is very hurt that aria wonā€™t tell him what went down with her and the guy she hit, but aria doesnā€™t want to upset Steve by telling him, bc it would absolutely change everything for him. The way he views his childhood, the way he views her, and she canā€™t have that (yes the guy did what you think he did no I wonā€™t go into detail)
Once aria gets out of jail her mum decides that England isnā€™t the best place for her and talks to her paternal grandmother about sending her to Hawkinā€™s. She goes, and is absolutely not what anyone expects Steveā€™s sister to be like.
Sheā€™s funny, sarcastic, and not willing to put up with any disrespect from any of the kids to Steve and openly tells them to get their shit together. Sheā€™s not easy to get along with, but she also clearly makes Steve super happy, so they put up with her.
Plus she can cook super well, so thatā€™s a plus.
She always seems to be making something; food, embroidery, crochet, knitting, her own clothing. Thereā€™s always something in her hands and she is always happy to explain to el what sheā€™s doing.
She isnā€™t close to anyone in the party but el, who appreciates not being treated like a secret weapon, and being taught new skills that have nothing to do with her usefulness or her powers.
Aria knows all about her powers and the upside down, though, since Steve tells her everything. She just doesnā€™t bring it up.
She ends up making super good friends with Eddie who is a fan of her quick wit and unwillingness to let anyone elseā€™s opinion get to her.
She openly rolls her eyes at people trying to call her a freak for having two piercings, and is perfectly happy to sneak off in the night and put Steveā€™s bag through artie mckinnonā€™s windscreen after he calls Eddie some interesting words in the family video car park.
She is genuinely a trainwreck of a person, but she also helps Steve let go of his rigid grasp of his old reputation, protects Eddie in a way no one has since his mother died, immediately clocks robin as another queer woman and gives her some much needed solidarity.
Ironically, though she helps Steve let loose and stop being so worried about being looked at as a freak, her own persona seems more and more to Eddie and robin like a shield.
They see the gentle way she interacts with el, how she softens her voice, and gently guides her hands to knead dough, or manoeuvre a crochet hook. They see the way she drops a hand on wills shoulder and steers him into the kitchen when he starts breathing too fast at a stupid horror film that mike and Lucas insisted on.
They talk it out with the party at Steveā€™s house (he let them use the pool due to the heat) when her and Steve go on a trip to Indianapolis for the day for some twin bonding. The others refuse to believe them that aria might be anything less than a Rottweiler in human form, so Eddie and robin go snooping for old family photos in Steveā€™s room.
Eventually, they find a video titled ā€œpicnic in the meadow, 1981ā€ and play it
Itā€™s grainy, and the footage is wobbly. Itā€™s arias face that fills the screen first, smiling widely with her sandy blonde hair falling around her face in a stark contrast to her usual low bun.
The sound clears and she is laughing at whoever is holding the camera. Her voice is soft and impossibly tender.
ā€œCome here, love, let me hold the cameraā€
A little boys voice, no older than four, says okay and giggles, and the camera changes hands. The footage changes to a small boy with blonde hair like aria and Steve, and he giggles again and runs off. Aria huffs goodnaturedly behind the camera, and the kids are struck by how genuinely happy she sounds.
The crappy camera pans up and around, showing a picturesque landscape that has the viewers gasping. Itā€™s an actual, literal, meadow. Like something out of a fairytale. Lush grass, wildflowers in almost every colour, and at one point a blue butterfly flutters past the lens, making aria laugh in delight.
Eddie cements this image in his mind, deciding to use it in a future campaign.
The camera moves again, showing the base of what is clearly a huge, ancient tree. Steve is sat there, with a toddler on his lap. Itā€™s a little girl with dark hair, and sheā€™s grasping eagerly at the strawberries Steve is handing her.
Aria moves closer, scooping up the little boy from before as he giggles maniacally, and drops him down next to Steve.
Steve lifts his head and smiles at the camera in a carefree way that none of them have truly seen before. He is wearing a light blue cardigan, clearly handmade, and itā€™s obvious that itā€™s arias handiwork. He looks soft, and happy, and the little girl on his lap smacks his hands in frustration as he stops de-heading the strawberries for her. Steve and aria laugh and Steve smacks several kisses in rapid succession on her face, and her mouth opens in high pitched laughter to reveal two missing front teeth that have everyone twisting to look at Dustin.
The little girl rolls out of Steveā€™s lap and her and the little boy steal a packet of raspberries and run off to sit by a low stone wall not far away.
Steve rolls his eyes at the camera, and asks aria to hand it over.
The footage switches back to aria and she looks so different that itā€™s hard for the party to recognise her. No haphazard low bun, no loose hoodies and yoga pants.
She looks beautiful. Her hair is down, and crowned with a poorly made daisy chain. Her cheeks are rosy and freckled, and her brown eyes are golden in a ray of late afternoon sun. She is wearing a light green sundress that floats around her in a light breeze and she looks like a completely different person. She looks happy.
Steve stands behind the camera, and turns the camera so it faces both him and aria as they press their cheeks together and smile into the lens, capturing forever a moment that seems all too normal for them. Like they spend every day this happy.
The footage ends, and robin and el have tears in their eyes.
Max is the first to speak. ā€œNo wonder sheā€™s so unhappy all the time, if this is what she left behindā€
Eddie and robin share a look, not saying it outloud but knowing that max is thinking of billy, and how he changed after being forced away from a life he loved in California.
Robin rewinds the tape and returns it to itā€™s spot.
Everyone seems a little more inclined to cut aria some slack after seeing the tape. It seems easier to imagine her as something other than the perpetually annoyed, grungy ex con theyā€™ve come to see her as.
Seeing her press a loving hand to her little brotherā€™s face as he tugs on her dress, and a kiss to Steveā€™s cheek makes her seem more real to the kids. And the little girl with missing teeth that Steve dotes on in the video has Dustin silent for several hours, wondering if thatā€™s why Steve tolerated him in the beginning, because he reminds him of his sister.
When Steve and aria come home, itā€™s to a quiet living room full of kids, and el rushes forward to wrap her arms around ariaā€™s waist. For the first time, everyone takes notice of how instinctual it seems for aria to place a hand on els back in response, and to stroke her hair.
They donā€™t tell them what they saw, but theyā€™re nicer after that. They stop making fun of Steve, and start calling before they just barge into the house. Eddie asks her more about her home, and enjoys watching her smile when she starts gushing about the twisted trees in the woods at the end of her road, and the wild beauty of the moors that inspired wuthering heights, did eddie know?
Things get better for aria after that. She stops feeling like living in Hawkinā€™s is tearing at her heart. Even though she still misses her family, and her life in England, sheā€™s adapting.

In Your Dreams Epilogue
Pairing: Baker!Seokjin x Lawyer!Reader
Word Count: 1.1k
Warnings: not a single one
Genre: oh this hella fluffy lol
Summary: You wouldn't necessarily call yourself cynical or pessimistic, but when it comes to the topic of soulmates, well you're certainly not the most agreeable person. It's not that you don't believe in love but, when your career exposes you to what happens when 'love' isn't enough, when being soulmates doesn't bring your happy ending- it can be hard to put your faith in such things. Still, just like everyone else you have the dreams, the ones of your soulmate's memories. The ones you'll continue to have until you find them. Unfortunately for yours, meeting him does little to change your outlook- at first. He's certainly got his work cut out for him.
***
Your eyes follow your aunt as she paces back and forth in your dressing room while you sit as you let Lisa double check your hair and makeup for the last time. When she steps away from you, you climb out of the chair and grab your aunt by her shoulders.
"Aunty- aunty! Aren't I supposed to be the nervous one today?" You jokingly ask her.
"Absolutely not the last thing you want is to get cold feet." She shakes her head.
"Right so why are you trying to worry a hole into the floor? You have got to calm down." You tell her.
"You're right. I'm sorry I just- you're getting married!"
"Really? I had no idea. That explains the white dress and the months of planning and my bridal party." You say sarcastically.
"Oh stop it. You can't blame me for my reaction, truthfully your father and I never expected to see you walk down the aisle." She says.
"Go easy on her y/n. To be fair pumpkin your dreams never really included this kind of thing." Your dad chuckles.
"Yeah well- things don't always go according to plan." You shrug.
"Right but if we want this wedding to go according to plan the bride and her escorts need to get in place now. And Jin just entered the hall which means so do I!" Lisa says shuffling out of the dressing room.
"After you sweetheart." Your dad says gesturing towards the door. You smile at him as you walk down the hall to the end of the short line of people left to enter. Lisa and Jimin are the best man and maid of honor, Jin's other friends Jungkook and Namjoon are the other groomsmen while your bridesmaids are another friend of yours and Lisa's from college and Jin's sister Miyoung. The ring bearer is Lisa's nephew and then the flower girls, are some of Jin's younger cousins.
You couldn't decide who would walk you down the aisle, so you asked both your aunt and father to do it. So, with one on either side of you, you enter the ceremony hall and slowly make your way down the aisle. As you hear the wedding march play and look at all your friends and family watching you, you allow yourself one final moment of disbelief. I can't believe I'm getting married today. To my soulmate.
With a deep breath as you reach the end you take Jin's hand and join him at the alter, nodding to your aunt and father as they take their seats.
If anyone asked you what the officiant said during your wedding you wouldn't be able to tell them most of his words, focused only on Jin and the feeling of happiness blooming in your chest, but you remember clearly when the moment came and he announced to the crowd-
"The couple has chosen to recite their own written vows."
"Would you like to go first?" Jin whispers to you and you shake your head.
"No." You whisper back.
"Well okay," Jin clears his throat, "I thought so hard about what I was going to say and every time I sat down to write it, I would ask myself 'how do I explain to the love of my life, and to all of our friends and family, how amazing you are. You are headstrong and determined, you are kind and thoughtful, and if I tried to explain all of the ways you are everything I've ever wanted and then some this wedding would go on for days-" there's a soft ripple of chuckles from you and the rest of your guests, "so instead of doing that- I want to say thank you. Because you are someone who knows what you're doing and where you are going and I am lucky that you've more or less agreed to let me take this journey with you and join me on my journey. And since I'm not going to talk everyone's ears off about it- I hope that for the rest of our lives my actions will show you and everyone else every way that I think you are amazing." Jin says taking a deep breath when he's done. You're left staring at him with complete adoration.
"Wow." You breathe, after a moment you clear your throat, "I guess it's my turn now. Way to set the bar so high Jin." You joke with a chuckle, but your voice is thick with emotion as you say it.
"You know, my career is very wordy- I spend a lot of time writing and speaking, giving longwinded explanations about- a lot of things. And I wrote my vows in the same longwinded fashion but now that I am standing here and especially having heard your vows I don't feel like reciting what I wrote. I love you Jin, so much. But if someone told me when Lisa dragged me into your bakery once upon a few years ago that I would end up standing here with you today I would've laughed at them but here we are. Here I am. And look if the words headstrong and determined should be used to describe anyone it would be the man who, when his soulmate upon meeting said she didn't want anything to do with him really wasn't discouraged, who didn't blanch when she said she would only entertain one date with him, didn't run for the hills when she told him she didn't believe in soulmates. Anyone else would think he was crazy for sticking around I'm sure, but it worked. So now I want to thank you. Thank you for, proving me wrong, and giving me a reason to believe in soulmates." You say.
"May we have the rings please?" Your officiant turns to Jimin who hands him the little velvet box. He places Jin's ring in your hand and your ring in his. "Wear these rings as a reminder of the vows you have just taken. Jin."
"With this ring, I thee wed." He says placing the ring on your finger.
"Y/n?" The officiant nods to you.
"With this ring, I thee wed." You beam sliding his ring in place.
"I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride." He says. You throw your arms around Jin's neck as his arms wrap around your waist and he pulls you into a searing kiss, the sound of cheers erupting from your guests. When you pull away from him he smiles brightly at you.
"I love you." You say softly.
"I love you too. For now and forever." He says back.
Once upon a time you thought your soulmate was someone you'd only know in your dreams- turns out even the vaguest ideas can come to life with a little bit of faith.

Chapter 2
5:00 am my phone read.Ā
It was usual for my brain to be awake at this hour. Since before I can remember it was part of the schedule I followed, everywhere I went. It was a small thing, but the sense of normalcy was a comforting friend. It made sense to follow a routine I could have anywhere. I was out of bed and into workout clothes, ready for a quick jog around the woods.Ā
I started off with a slow and comfortable trot before speeding up once I reached the tree-filled terrain. The smell of wet soil, the sound of birds chirping and leaves rustling, the crunching of leaves under my feet was oddly comforting. There was a strange pull that came from the heart of Beacon Hills. I had lived in many places in my short lifetime but this place was different, the atmosphere was different, the people were different. One of those people was Derek Hale, the mysterious, broody, sarcastic man that had bumped his way in.Ā
Speak of the devil and he shall appear.
"Why are you stopping?" He asked, a small chuckle escaping his mouth.Ā
"How did you get here? Where the hell did you come from?"
"You're not the only person who jogs in this town and this happens to be the trail I take. You know, you should work out on a trail that is closer to your house. Makes it easier to actually go back."
I looked around. Once again, I had trailed off and didn't know where I was. "Lucky for you, I have a great memory. We can finish off running and I'll instruct you back to your house."
"You know you sound like a stalker." We started to jog once again.
"How so?"Ā
"Well, you've only been there like two or three times and you already know the way back. Creepy!"
"Oh, come on, it means that I have a very sharp memory. Unlike you who can't seem to remember what house you live in."
"TouchƩ."
The con and occasionally laughing at something. It felt good talking to him, almost natural. There was a supernatural attraction that I felt when I was near him, an unusual need for his closeness. Our relationship came easy, as the clichĆ© would have it, it felt like I had known him all my life.Ā
We ran for about an hour and a half before we turned back. "I think it's time we went back. You have school in an hour."
"Whoa, take the stalking down a notch."
"Oh, come on, I went to that school before you, I think I know the schedule."
"Alright, grandpa. Let's head back. It's time for your breakfast smoothie and then some bingo."
"Very funny." He ruffled my hair whilst fake laughing.
"I try." We ran and ran until I came into view of the curb that led to the house. "Well, this is my exit. Would it be too much to ask for you to take me to school?"
"Not a problem. Meet you back here at 7:45?"
"That would be perfect." He kissed my cheek and left to run to where I believe was his house. My face turned red, and I ducked inside.
"Mom? Dad?" I entered the kitchen and noticed a note over a covered plate. "Left for work early. Eat your food and go to school." I read out loud.
I took my time getting ready for school. My bag was already packed, as was my lunch. A long shower and a slow breakfast were in store as I awaited Derek's black Camaro to roll into my driveway.Ā
"Thanks so much for the lift. I packed you some breakfast."Ā
"No problem and thank you." He smiled. "You know, maybe after school, I can finally give you a tour around town. So you can familiarize yourself."
"That would be wonderful." I checked my schedule. "Actually, you can pick me up an hour before school ends. I have study hall at that hour, and no one would care if I left."
"I think I can make that arrangement." He looked at me showing a perfect set of white teeth and a smile that would make anyone melt. "But wouldn't your parents know that you left school? I mean, you won't be there when they go pick you up."
"I'll just tell them Allison gave me a ride or walked home," I said thinking of more excuses I could tell my parents. Distracted by my thoughts, my hand started reaching out to the powered-off radio and I didn't notice that so did Derek's. A sharp current went up my arm as our hands make contact. We both quickly pulled away and I could feel the blood rushing to my face turning it a deep shade of red.
"Sorry, I shouldn't impose. It's your car." I spoke up, quick to start picking at the skin around my fingernails to busy my hands. Derek perceived the nervous nature of my actions and stopped my fussing by putting one of his hands over mine.Ā
"Don't worry it's fine. Just put the radio on whatever station you like." He smiled reassuringly and I reached to the radio and just turned it on, leaving it in the last station it had been on.
"Ugh, I absolutely dread going to school. Most of it I'm gonna forget either way."
"I'd tell you to ditch but that would be shame on me, so I won't. But think about it, this day you'll only get 7 hours of school and then you can hang out with me. Best present ever."
"Yeah, don't think so highly of yourself. Maybe I'll just wander around town until I find my way home."
"Very funny." He stopped at the drop-off zone. "This is your stop."
"Thanks again for the ride, awfully kind actions from such a sour wolf" I laughed at his scowl. "I'll see you in the afternoon."
"Looking forward to it." I exited the car and he waited till I was on the sidewalk to speed off.
"Was that Derek Hale that just dropped you off?" I turned around and was met face-to-face with Scott.
"Yeah. What's the problem?" Not that it will matter.
"You shouldn't trust him, he's bad news."
"Honestly, Scott, I understand your good intentions, but I'll sort out the wrong kind on my own terms." He looked taken aback at my response, probably thinking I would not talk back.
"I'm sorry if I offended you, but he is not a person that anyone should be with." With that, he left with worry evident on his face.
I understood that he was looking out for my "well-beingā€, but he didn't know me and I'm pretty sure he didn't know Derek either. Maybe that's what Derek meant when I met him. Everyone thinks he is a bad person, but he hasn't done anything wrong in my eyes.
I walked over to my locker and started exchanging my books. Closely next to me I could hear Scott talking to Allison about me and Derek, and my name should be out of his mouth. Once I finished with my locker, I slammed the door and they both stopped talking, noting my close presence. I walked past them feeling their worried stares burning my back. This was going to be a hell of a year. The only thing that could get me through it was the acquaintance relationship I have with Isaac. I did text him a bit last night but mostly helping him with homework. Lord knows he needs all the help he can get.Ā Ā
We all stood around in gym class as Stiles and Erica climbed the rock wall. Everyone else had gone including Scott who mastered a great fall. Stiles appeared to have fun, but Erica would let out sounds of discomfort and shortness of breath as she climbed. At a point, she stopped.Ā
"Erica, are you dizzy?" Coach said. "Is it vertigo?"Ā
"Vertigo is the dysfunction of the vesicular system of the inner ear" Lydia stated in a mocking tone. "She's just freaking out."Ā
"Erica!" Coach screamed.
"coach, maybe itā€™s not safe. you know she's epileptic." Allison stated. How does no one care?Ā
"Wh-why does no one tell me this?!" Coach Finstock questioned annoyed. "Erica, just fall back, there's a mat that will catch you."Ā
She slowly let go of the wall and made her descent. No one seemed to care that the poor girl was shaken to the core; they all laughed.
When class was over everyone headed to their respective locker rooms to change. Something inside me kept pulling me back to the gym, so I walked back as I put on my shirt. As I opened the doors, I saw Erica fall from the wall and luckily into Scott's arms. He slowly put her on the floor as the class ran in behind us.Ā
"Put her on her side," I stated.Ā
"How did you know?" Allison whispered to Scott.
"I just felt it." He whispered back.Ā
After Erica had calmed, the coach called an ambulance to take her to be checked at the hospital and the day went by normally. I was currently in my "last" period. Tapping my nails in a rhythmic pattern waiting for the stupid bell to ring. Only 5 more minutes and I would be out of here. This was the first time I had done something like this. I always stick by the rules and make sure to follow all of them. My heart was racing, and my palms were sweating. In 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. Cue the bell. I grabbed all my things and stuffed them in my bag. I used to my advantage the fact that everyone was piled in the hallway and headed outside. Waiting for me was Derek in his black Camaro. Suddenly my heart steadied its pace and I felt relaxed.
"Hey there, rebel." He smirked at me as I entered the car and buckled my seatbelt.
"Don't make small talk. Just go." I said whilst trying to hide by burrowing in the seat. If I could I would have jumped into the trunk to avoid any hidden stares from authority figures.
"Don't tell me you've never done this before." I shook my head no and felt my face growing warmer by the second. "Aw, you're so innocent. For a big mouth that is." I slapped his arm as hard as I could.
"Don't be rude." I crossed my arms, slouched down, and pouted. He looked over at me and laughed. That made me slouch farther down.
"Oh, come on. Don't get mad." He ruffled my hair and laughed once again when I swatted his hand away. "Yeesh, feisty."
"So, where's our first pit stop?" I asked whilst looking out the window not wanting to look at his face.
"A small diner I know. Wouldn't want you to starve." He smirked. "Might make you angrier."
"I am not angry, just annoyed."
"Got some feelings hurt?" He said laughing.
"Derek, don't be rude. You will regret it."
"Oh, what could you do?"
"Is that a challenge?" He didn't answer, just laughed. I rolled down the window and stuck my head out. "HELP!! This man is kidnapping me!! HELP!! Bloody he...!"Ā
My sentence was cut short by Derek's hand pulling me down by my jacket and onto the seat again.
"Why did you do that?" I asked innocently. I had caused the faces of a few people on the street to look at the car in horror.
"You know why! That was totally uncalled for."
"I told you that being rude was something you would regret. I'm not one to say this a lot but, I told you so."Ā
He tried his best to keep a tight scowl on his face but in a matter of seconds, we were laughing at my past actions.
"Whatever, we're here." He turned off the car and went to the passenger side to open the door for me.Ā
"Why thank you," I said and took his extended hand to pull my weight up.Ā
"No problem." I smiled at his goofy courtesy but as we walked inside the establishment I could feel my heart beating faster by the second. "Table for two." Derek pointed at a booth made for two people exactly. Once we had sat down a lady maybe in her late thirties approached us to take our order.
"What do you want to order today, darlings?" She gave us a warm smile as she waited for our response.
"I'll have the bacon cheeseburger with some onion rings, a stack of pancakes, and some chicken fillets, a Diet Coke, and afterward some pie, please."
"Would you like the kitchen sink with that?" I said in shock. "I think I'll just get the, ummmm, bacon cheeseburger also with some onion rings and an iced tea. Maybe add some pie afterward too."
The lady laughed a bit, nodded, and smiled at us as she turned to the kitchen to put out our order.Ā
"So, someone's a bit hungry. Huh, sour wolf?" I chuckled.
"Why do you call me that?" He said somewhat annoyed.
"I don't know. It just fits you."
"How?"
"Cause you're very sour and you kind of look like a wolf. Hairy face and crazy hair. I don't know how to explain it. It's just a nickname, though. If it makes you mad I can just call you something else."
"I'm not mad. Just wondering." He slouched on the seat looking less tense. "How is it that I'm usually so bad with meeting people yet with you, I just clicked?"
"I don't know. I'm just special that way."
"Very funny."
"I know! I could take up a career in comedy." He chuckled as he threw a sugar packet at me. "So, since we are getting to know each other we should know basic things about one another. Let me start. What's your favorite color?"
"Maybe black or blue. What about you?"
"Totally red and black." The waitress came with our drinks. I took a sip of my iced tea and continued with the questions. "Favorite place to be?"
"That house in the woods where we met." I gave him a weird look.
"Why there? It barely stands with a foundation. What could possibly be there?"
"It's the house I used to live in before it burnt down. My family was in there." I choked on my drink when he said this.
"Oh my gosh, Derek. I'm so sorry I brought it up. We can drop the topic."
"Don't worry about it. It happened such a long time ago it's sometimes relieving talking about it." After there was an awkward silence, so Derek cleared his throat and asked a question. "Um, and what's your favorite place to be?"
"I'm not sure. Usually, I like places more because of the people I'm with. But if I had to choose probably the woods, it's the calmest place I know. The only place where you can actually be free."
"Wow, Ms. Argent. So poetic. It touched me." He pointed at his heart. "Right here."
"Very funny, now, favorite sport?" And the game went on even when our food served. Whilst eating we kept asking each other questions and getting to know each other profoundly. This has been the first time I had ever opened up to someone. It felt strange. Letting someone know small details about yourself. Making yourself vulnerable to them. Showing them how they could break you. But this was different. I felt like I was just becoming closer to him.
"We should do that someday. I mean the thought of just leaving for a whole day, not knowing where you are going, just finding an adventure."
"Definitely. You decide when the first time." I smiled at him.
"That's a deal." He looked down at his watch. "I think it's time I take you home. Don't want your parents to worry."
"Alright. Let's go." I grabbed my bag and was about to pay my part of the check, but he wouldn't let me. He grabbed the money I left and paid completely. "I don't understand the need of being such a gentleman if this wasn't a date. Just two people hanging out."
"So, this wasn't a date?"
"You thought it was?" I thought about it. "What do you classify a date per se?"
"An outing in which two people go out and get to know each other a little bit more." What he said made sense. It had never dawned on me that this could have been anything other than just a casual outing, but not being too well versed in normal social encounters, let alone dating encounters.Ā
"Alright, you win. I have officially gone on my first date."
"No way. This could not have been your first date." When he saw the serious look on my face, he stopped chuckling. "I'm so sorry you had to have given you such a crappy first date. I promise I'll make up for it one day."
"Deal." We even shook on it. "Now let's get going before my parents know I'm late."
During the drive back, he pointed out different key places I should know when going around Beacon Hills as well as easier routes to these places. Although I was heavily grateful for all the useful tips, my brain could hardly remember the first route he showed me.Ā
When we got to my house, I noticed that my father's car was not in there. I guess they haven't arrived yet. I said goodbye to Derek and entered the house, thanking him for a lovely afternoon. I changed into workout attire and, deciding to stay home, went to the basement and started working out. After half an hour of running and half an hour of physical training, I decided it was enough and went to take a shower. I noticed that my parents weren't home yet.
"I wonder what's holding them back?" After my shower, I continued my current read of Pride and Prejudice. But something was bothering me, a thought that wouldn't leave my head.
I'm leaving once the year is over. Getting close to Derek will fuck me up once I leave. I've never had to say goodbye to anyone. I can't start now. I'll need to start avoiding him. Don't know how, but I must try.
I went downstairs to get a glass of water when I heard a knock on the door. It was Uncle Chris.
"Hey, Uncle Chris. What are you doing here?"
"I'm looking for your father. Is he here?"
"No, I haven't seen him. I got here and neither mom nor dad was here. Is something wrong?"
"No. Just couldn't reach his cell. I'm sure he's fine. Have a good night, sweetheart." He kissed my forehead and left. I started to worry. What if something had happened?
So, I decided to call him. Fortunately, he picked up.
"Dad, where are you?"
"Oh, honey, I forgot to tell you. Your mom and I will be out for the rest of the week. We left some money on the first drawer of the right side of the kitchen island and if you want you can stay with your uncle."
"But Uncle Chris came by and he didn't know where you were. Does he know you left?"
"Oh, I forgot to call him. I'll do that right now. Goodnight, munchkin, go to sleep."
"Goodnight, dad. Love you."
"Love you too." I hung up the phone and went upstairs completely forgetting about the glass of water I went to drink.
My phone buzzed and I looked at the caller ID signaling that Isaac was calling.
"Hey, Isaac."
"Hey, (Y/N). Um, do you think you can pick me up?" Isaac said in between short pants.
"Sure, where are you?" I asked. He told me where he was, and I took the keys to my mother's car to look for Isaac. He looked scared and frantic when I neared the spot, he told me about. His physique also looked different. Usually, he would walk cowering but now he stood tall and seemed a bit more buff. "You okay?"
"Yeah, just, um, do you think I could stay with you tonight?"
"I guess." I started driving to my house. "Are you sure you're okay?"
"Yeah, totally. Just tired." I took the hint. He didn't want to talk, and I wasn't going to press on.
At my house, I arranged the guest room and got him spare clothes to change into. He thanked me and left for the bathroom. Something was wrong. But what?
***
Three days had passed.
Three days that I had stayed in my house for my daily workout.
Three days that my phone had been buzzing with messages from Derek asking where I was.
Because three nights before I had decided to avoid Derek at all costs.
The only way to leave it all behind is if you don't associate yourself with anyone. That way you won't feel any remorse or pain once you disappear. One time when I left was when I was approximately six or seven years old, and I had to say goodbye to Allison since we were sharing a room at that time. The second time was when I had to leave Josie. After that, I started familiarizing myself with the feeling of loneliness.Ā  It wasn't that bad once you remembered the fact that you would always see your parents when you got home, and everything would be better. Although, these days I had housed Isaac in my house, rare was the occasion that we interacted other than doing homework. Isaac would come home late in the night and quickly went to sleep. But, he stayed in my spare room for two nights and told me he had found a place to stay. He left thanking me for my hospitality.
When I finished my workout, I ran upstairs and took a shower. I changed from my stinky workout clothes to a plain white shirt and black jeans, obviously paired with my leather jacket. Once dressed I went downstairs and grabbed some cash to buy myself a muffin and a big coffee. Finally, I found the keys to my beautiful matte black Harley Fat Bob. My father had gotten me this motorcycle about two years back when he noticed I just kept crashing cars. The only thing I never crashed was his motorcycle and because he was worried I would, he bought me my own. I tend to wreck a lot of stuff. It's not intentional, I'm just clumsy at times.
I opened the door to the garage and noticed it sitting in a corner covered by a blanket. Once I took it off, I smiled. I passed my hand over the beautiful color, the smooth surface, the cold metal. It all felt familiar. A part of me. I grabbed my helmet and got on it. Once I sat my body felt relaxed, at ease. A spark of adrenaline was shot through my body when the engine came to life.
I backed up from the garage and went to the local cafƩ store. While waiting to pick up my order I noticed Derek walking in with his jogging clothes on. He still hasn't noticed me, too busy looking at the menu. When my name was called, he looked at me and called my name, but I ran out of the cafƩ with my order ignoring him.
When I got to the school everyone was staring at me. The new chick was now badass. I walked in with my backpack slung over my shoulder easing towards my locker.
"Hey there, gorgeous." I closed the locker door to see Jackson standing next to me. I rolled my eyes.
"Hi, Jackson. What do you want?"
"I was just wondering when you were free."
"Oh, well from tomorrow to never gonna happen. Get down from the cloud, buddy."
"Oh, come on, we both know you want some of this." He motioned over his body.
"Get over yourself." I scoffed.
"Babe, it doesn't hurt to try."
"I believe she's not interested, Jackson." A strawberry blonde girl appeared. Her confidence struck me like lightning, a very apparent aura of dominance radiating from within her.
"Why don't you mind your own business, Lydia. I'm talking to her, not you. You've already ruined everything else."
"Well, I think she has no business with you so why don't you scram?" With a huff and a puff, Jackson finally gave in and I turned to greet my hero, who was surprisingly accompanied by Allison.
"Thank you, so much. He wouldn't take no for an answer."
"No problem. I'm Lydia, but you knew that."
"(Y/N). Argent." She motioned between Allison and me. "Cousins."
"Pleasure." Then the bell rang. "Guess I have a new best friend, (Y/N)." You guessed wrong.
I entered Mr. Harris' classroom and sat down next to Isaac and as usual Mr. Chatty Pants tried to hold a conversation from the table behind us. Seriously, how much can someone talk? I took out my notebook and started writing down everything the teacher was saying is the homework on the board. Stiles had finally gotten the hint and didn't talk to me the whole class. That was a relief. Maybe it was due to the fact he was too focused on the strawberry blonde who had saved my ass from Jackson.
The day went on quite smoothly except at lunch. It wasn't the same Erica that had fallen from the rock-climbing wall. She completely changed; a more confident walk, she was wearing makeup and tight-fitted clothing, and her hair was perfectly styled. She left the lunchroom after taking a bite off an apple seductively and Scott and Stiles followed, as did I. Curiosity had taken the best of me as to this overnight transformation.
She opened the front doors to the school and there he was. Derek Hale in his black Camaro with the biggest smirk on his face staring at Scott. When he directed his sight to me his smirk kind of fell but was brought up quickly. During that Erica had gotten inside the car and they left, together. I don't know why I was jealous because he meant nothing to me, but it broke my heart. I got nervous. I think Scott noticed because he looked at me worried.
"Are you okay, (Y/N)?" I nodded rapidly and out of breath. I had no idea what was happening.
"I think you're having a panic attack." Stiles pointed out handing me an inhaler.
"I used to have panic attacks, too." I inhaled a pump and my breathing seemed to normalize. "You okay now?"
"Yeah. Thanks." I handed him the inhaler.
"No, keep it. I don't need it anymore." I said a low thanks and walked back to school to head to my next class.
I felt extremely weird the rest of the day. Why did I feel that way when I saw Erica and Derek together? It wasn't like anything was going on between us. Also, he's far too old for me. Or maybe I'm too young. I don't know. But I couldn't shake off that sour taste of jealousy that the image of them left.
I knew I wanted to stay as far away as I could from hin but at this moment there was nothing more that I wanted than to be close to him.

a skeleton of something more [2/6]
previously here. malex wip fic. a short serial leading up the premiere.
spoilers for the trailer and promo, will be instantly AU. If Iā€™m going to the trouble of writing a malex fix-it for the season 3 opener, why not fix 2x13 too?
**** THEN ****Ā
After Alex closed Trippā€™s journal, he met Michaelā€™s gaze across the table at the Crashdown.Ā
His golden-brown eyes were heavy with pain, the reminder of how his motherā€™s story had ended was still fresh between them despite the span of months since the fiery end of Caulfield. What had resulted in being the fiery end of them, even though Alex hadnā€™t known it at the time. The look of sleeplessness in Michaelā€™s face reminded Alex, that outside of this small piece of Nora, he had the weight of Maria still in the hospital recovering from the pathogen Flint had released. The press of the Deep Sky ring in his pocket warred with the hesitation to place one more burden on Michael, would the abacus of their fragile friendship balance out?
He flashed to that last argument in Michaelā€™s bunker, a disaster of his own making, thinking he could believe in his father, but thankfully harm was averted at Crashcon. That recent memory was motive enough for Alex to decide. Whatever happened next, he needed Michael on the same page with him.
As Isobel moved to leave the table, explaining to Michael that she needed to check on Max, Alex held Michaelā€™s gaze deliberately. Then he folded his fingers down, until the last three fanned out in a downward W.Ā
ā€œAfter what happened with Maria, maybe you should come with me, Michael. You can help me shake some sense into Max,ā€ Alex heard, tuning back into Isobelā€™s voice. Her eyes moved back and forth between them, a crease of suspicion wrinkling her upturned nose, as she stopped on him. ā€œItā€™ll be a good distraction.ā€
Without looking at Isobel, Michaelā€™s eyes remained trained on Alexā€™s hand. ā€œNo, thanks, Iā€™m good here. Iā€™ve had my fill of stubborn ass people who donā€™t want to listen to sensible advice from me, so Iā€™ll catch up with you later, Isobel.ā€Ā
She made a dismissive huff but did not argue, leaving with the barest semblance of a polite goodbye to Alex, but that was typical Isobel Evans. Michael waited until his sister was on the other side of the door, before speaking quietly, his gaze finally moving up from Alexā€™s hands to his face. ā€œI havenā€™t seen you flash that sign to me in years.ā€Ā
ā€œGlad to know you havenā€™t forgotten it.ā€
ā€œYou, making the ā€˜wait for me, I want you nowā€™ signal? Nah, thatā€™s been burned into my brain over the years.ā€ Michael said it with a faint trace of bitterness. ā€œI guess news travels fast, Maria only dumped my ass this morning.ā€
Alex winced and looked down, swallowing the surprise and spark of hope that welled in his throat at that disclosure. It was better to concentrate on the unique talent he had of stepping on landmines around Michael, than wonder about what had happened with Maria. It looked like he was still good at causing harm without intention, judging by the stung bite in Michaelā€™s voice. ā€œFuck, Iā€™m sorry, I didnā€™t know. I wouldnā€™t have-ā€
ā€œNo, Iā€™m sorry,ā€ Michael cut off his apology firmly with a wave of his hand, calling a time-out. Alex waited, his teeth pressed into his lower lip as Michael rubbed his eyes with a weary half-smile. ā€œIā€™m being an asshole right now, and thatā€™s not fair to take it out on you. Itā€™s been a shitty day already, and ā€” anyway, ā€¦ you definitely know how to get my attention, Alex.ā€ He tilted his head, self-deprecation on his face, ā€œfor better or worse, youā€™ve always been good at that.ā€Ā
It had been the sign they had developed whenever their paths had crossed over the years while Alex had been on leave in Roswell, but it had started that summer after high school. After Michaelā€™s hand had healed poorly from Jesse, the last three fingers had been left frozen in a claw, it had been a shared fuck-you to his dad to use it to form their own secret communication. A three-fingered W, turned upward meant it wasnā€™t a good time, and he would find Michael later; turned downward, well, that meant it was safe to approach him, and it had often ended in a hurried blowjob in his car. Perhaps he should have used more care in using it now, but Michael wasnā€™t the only one running on the fumes of insomnia and stress. ā€œSorry, I needed to talk to you, and I wanted to make sure you didnā€™t leave with Isobel-ā€
ā€œItā€™s fine, really. Itā€™s not a bad memory either, remembering that we had our little secret language.ā€ Michael wiggled his fingers in reassurance, his left hand still wrapped with a bandanna. ā€œI can make that signal a hell of a lot easier now, too. But anyway, what did you need?ā€
There was still a voice inside Alexā€™s head that said ā€˜youā€™, no matter how long it had been. He shoved that down deep, along with his curiosity about Maria, and concentrated on his purpose. ā€œYour advice on something, and then if itā€™s not too much to ask, your help.ā€
ā€œAnything.ā€Ā
Alex blinked, nonplussed by the easy acceptance.Ā
Michael gestured encouragingly, ā€œseriously, anything, just tell me whatā€™s going on because the way youā€™re hemming and hawing, it is freaking me out.ā€ Suddenly, all expression washed out of Michaelā€™s face as a horrible thought occurred to him. ā€œDid you get deployed or something?ā€
ā€œNot exactly, not how youā€™re thinking,ā€ he winced at the earned glare from Michael as he continued to stall while the words still tripped and fumbled around his mouth, heedless to the mounting frustration between them both. He sighed, and regrouped. Pushing the closed journal aside, Alex dug into his pocket and laid the signet ring on the table before Michael. ā€œLet me start at the beginning, I found this in my dadā€™s things.ā€Ā
ā€œJesse never seemed like a jewelry kind of guy to me.ā€ Michael picked up the ring, examining it closely with a sarcastic smirk. ā€œOther than parading around town with that wedding ring, when everyone knows your mom left him back during the Bush years, Dubya that is.ā€
ā€œMy father is all, was all, about appearances.ā€ Alex placed the photo of the group on the table, sliding it over to him. ā€œThat ring marked his membership in this paramilitary group called Deep Sky. Every man in that photo worked at Caulfield, at one time or another.ā€ He tapped his finger over the face of his father, then moved it to the right. ā€œThatā€™s my dad, and that is Ricky Long.ā€
Michael frowned, pulling the picture closer to squint at the faces. ā€œWyattā€™s dad?ā€
ā€œNo, Forrestā€™s.ā€
ā€œNazi guy? Seriously?ā€ He rubbed at his chin, the stubble longer than usual painting his jawline. Alex dragged his eyes away with effort as Michael considered that information. There was a reluctant understanding in his eyes, having recalled that Forrest Long wasnā€™t just ā€˜Nazi Guyā€™ to Alex, but someone who had expressed interest in Alex. Personal interest. ā€œI guess thatā€™s something you guys have in common then, dirtbag dads.ā€Ā
He didnā€™t look thrilled to admit that to Alex, but it was a mark of how far they had both come as friends that Michael had said it anyway regardless. It was kind of him. It was the same type of empathy Alex had extended toward Michael, when he had expressed interest in Maria. Cut open, bleeding under his skin from all the ways he had squandered his own chances, he had said something similar to Michael once upon a time. That was what love was all about. Then he had kept saying it, until he believed it most days because wanting Michael to be happy was the easier ask.
It was a gracious sentiment that was entirely wasted by Michael when it came to Forrest Long.Ā
ā€œIt would be, uh, something to bond over, if I hadnā€™t noticed that Forrest wears the same ring now.ā€Ā
Michaelā€™s eyes sharpened. ā€œFamily heirloom or do you think he worked at Caulfield?ā€
ā€œI donā€™t know, but he is an ex-Army vet.ā€ Alex tapped the photo of the members gathered together, ā€œThat was part of what Iā€™ve been looking into, identifying everyone who worked at Caulfield right until the end. As for Deep Sky, I donā€™t know if itā€™s military service, Caulfield, or a family legacy that ties every member together, I just know that Dad kept in touch with those who were involved at the prison.ā€Ā
ā€œMakes sense, Jesse was able to get a hold of the atomizer and pathogen that Charlie developed from somewhere. For all of his strutting around at Crashcon with a uniform on, that didnā€™t look like it was an official use of government property.ā€Ā
ā€œRight, it definitely wasnā€™t, and before you tell me to leave it alone-ā€ Alex began, remembering Michaelā€™s response to the investigation into 1947. He had considered Alexā€™s actions back then to be an act of futility, something that could only hurt by being revisited. The past being the past, unable to be altered.Ā
This time Michael cut him off, ā€œNo, I was wrong about that. I, um, I finally realized that just because I donā€™t see you connected to that place or the rest of your family, doesnā€™t mean you donā€™t. And while I wish that you didnā€™t, Alex, if digging into this gives you some sort of peace over it, then do it.ā€
Alex looked down, feeling the weight of relief that Michael understood. After his fatherā€™s body had been removed, after the questions and lies had been spun, he had spent the entire night sleepless over having been made into an effective weapon to force Michaelā€™s compliance. Helena had known where all the weak spots were thanks to Flint, and had armed herself with a depowering agent. Once Flint was recovered, there was nothing stopping him from employing a similar tactic in the future.
ā€œIf anyoneā€™s going to destroy me, it might as well be you.ā€ Michael had once declared with a bold carelessness that had infuriated and terrified Alex at the time, but that was nothing compared to now having a lived experience to back it up. His mind had easily used the memory of Mariaā€™s collapse after the faintest exposure at the Crashcon and had exchanged her with Michael, being torn apart molecule by molecule, by an invisible threat.
Give him an enemy that he could see any day, especially one that bled.Ā
ā€œIā€™ve been fighting so long, I donā€™t know what peace looks like anymore.ā€ Alex held out his hand for the ring, and Michael gently laid it in his palm, brushing his fingertips over Alexā€™s skin. A lifetime of controlling himself kept the reaction off his face as he rubbed his thumb over the raised emblem of Deep Sky. ā€œBut I have learned recently that when something seems too good to be true, it is.ā€Ā
Neither of them mentioned Jesse and his performance from the last few months, but Michael frowned again, ā€œWait a second, you think Forrest targeted you on purpose?ā€Ā
ā€œA member of a secret paramilitary organization just happens to ask me out after I was involved in the destruction of Caulfield? You really think thatā€™s a coincidence?ā€ Alex raised his eyebrow skeptically at Michael, before looking out the window to watch the pedestrians on the street.Ā
ā€œI think youā€™re the hottest guy in Roswell, so Iā€™m not surprised he asked you out.ā€ Michael flushed a little when Alex turned back to stare at him in surprise over the flattering comment. ā€œSeriously, youā€™re a catch, but I will agree, itā€™s not a good look that heā€™s got that ring. But maybe itā€™s crap he wears because of his dad, and heā€™s got no idea heā€™s parading around?ā€
ā€œYouā€™re being awfully generous.ā€
ā€œIsnā€™t that what you want? Because last time I checked, you were the one telling me that I should have faith in people, even if they give me no reason to.ā€ Michael flattened his hands on the table, drawing Alexā€™s attention to the bandanna on his hand again. That damn fight kept echoing between them to Alexā€™s dismay, but Michael didnā€™t let him linger over it, ā€œWhile I stand by what I said about Jesse, ā€˜cause he messes us both up, all I know about Forrest Long is that he is way too interested in Nazi history and he has good taste in guys.ā€ Michael wetted his lips, nervously to tack on, ā€œI also know that I trust you, and your instincts, so if you say thereā€™s something not right about him, then I believe you.ā€Ā
ā€œThereā€™s something not right about him,ā€ Alex repeated seriously.
ā€œThen I believe you, so what do you need me to do?ā€
ā€œHe wants to get close to me for some reason, probably related to what I know about aliens, so Iā€™m going to let him. And I need you to back me up in case something goes wrong, and maybe use that lock pick you have in your brain?ā€ Alex waited until Michael nodded in agreement, feeling the swell of gratitude at his support. Anyone else would probably think he was being paranoid, or that this was a delayed reaction to his father trying to kill them, but Michael, for all of his previous counter-arguments, had never truly believed in the good of humanity. Maybe in a few days, Alex would feel guilty in relying on that. Maybe in a few days, his suspicions about Forrest would be eliminated.
ā€œHeā€™s involved in running the open mike night at the Wild Pony with Maria, so I thought maybe I could perform a song or something? He drives a Prius, and while heā€™s listening to me sing, you could slip out mid-song and insert this into the code reader of his car.ā€Ā
On the table was a small device that mimicked a thumb drive, small and black. It was the type of technology that Alex had used in the Air Force, tracking terrorists abroad. It had taken a fair amount of searching to purchase the equivalent stateside to have on hand. Michael picked it up curiously, turning over his hands.
ā€œItā€™s designed to download the GPS history of his car,ā€ Alex explained, before rubbing the back of his head in thought. ā€œThatā€™s how I uncovered what my dad was up to, first by tracking his movements. If I let Forrest take me home, I can gain access to his laptop and phone.ā€
Michael furrowed his brow in concern, ā€œYouā€™re really willing to go that far? And what if he is involved in something shady, what then?ā€
ā€œMy father and brother both used me to get to you, thereā€™s really nothing I wouldnā€™t do to keep that from happening again and if it means playing along with this guy, letting him lead me to the members of Deep Sky? Then I will.ā€ If anything, his words only deepened the concern on Michaelā€™s face, but Alex had been committed for a long time. Since the red level threat. Since the short ride to the recruitment office. Maybe as far back as his guitar going missing in the music room.
ā€œIā€™ve slept with guys for worse reasons.ā€

Being in the witness protection program was...interesting.
It definitely was not what you were expecting, but then again, you didnā€™t know helping out a person you cared about would get you involved in a murder, yet here you are.
You had to leave everything behind, not that you had that much of a life to begin with, but it was comfortable. Now, everything was different. New home in a new state, even a new last name. Thankfully, you got to keep your first name, you were grateful for that at least.
You were surprised to find the most annoying thing was the neighbourhood that the program placed you in. Itā€™s like it was made for Mormons or something, your neighbours were too nice, at least the house to the right of yours. You didnā€™t really know who lived in the house to the left, working from home had the benefit of never going outside and the only reason you knew who lived to your right was cause those neighbours were the type of people to introduce themselves.
Yuck.
But still, you couldnā€™t help but be a little curious.
You did know, however, that they had only recently moved in since the one morning truck woke up before your alarm rang that morning. You were grouchy the rest of the day, thus youā€™ve been slightly petty towards yourĀ ā€œnewā€ neighbours since then. You definitely needed to work on your attitude...one day.
After being inside your house for more than a week, you decided you wanted some vitamin D, which you rarely ever did so you mustā€™ve been seriously deprived.
You walked out of the door leading to the backyard with a book in hand, frowning when you saw how overgrown the grass was from your laziness. You told yourself youā€™d do it later, and by later you meant you would mow your yard when you started to hate yourself enough to the point where you felt too guilty leaving it alone.
You huffed as you sat in one of your lawn chairs that you bought when you moved in, lying to yourself that you were going to spend more time outside when you knew you wouldnā€™t. A first for everything, you supposed.
A few chapters in, you heard a door open and shut in your neighbourā€™s backyard, but you thought nothing of it, almost too entranced in your book.
You smiled to yourself when you started to hear 1990s R&B playing softly, not your cup of tea but you enjoyed it occasionally. Donā€™t Go Chasing Waterfalls had just started playing when you heard the neighbourā€™s back door slammed.Ā ā€œDude, turn that shit off! Youā€™ve been playing that song constantly and Iā€™m actually getting sick of it. God.ā€ You heard an angsty female voice.
Oh no...you lived next a family.
ā€œHey!ā€
You flinched, noticing a blonde girl was talking you.Ā ā€œUh, hey?ā€ You slowly closed your book, reluctantly walking over to the fence separating the backyards when the girl motioned you over.
ā€œHavenā€™t seen you around before, just move in?ā€ She asked, smirking slightly, looking you up and down.
You mocked her smirk, not liking the almost condescending look she was giving you.Ā ā€œNo, been here for awhile. Thatā€™s how I know youā€™ve only just moved in a few weeks ago.ā€
The girlā€™s smirk only grew.Ā ā€œWhatā€™s your name?ā€
ā€œY/N. Yours?ā€
ā€œCasey, and that loser is Kenny.ā€ She pointed to the table behind her, seeing a blonde boy sitting somewhat dejectedly in one of the chairs fiddling with a small CD player.Ā ā€œHey, TLC, get over here!ā€ The boy looked to Casey with a panicked expression, visibly looking like he wasnā€™t sure if the girl meant it or not. She rolled her eyes,Ā ā€œCome on, dude!ā€
The boy nodded, frantically walking away to join Casey at the fence.Ā ā€œHey.ā€ He stuttered, blushing when he noticed your eyes on him.
Casey rolled her eyes yet again.Ā ā€œYeah, this is Kenny.ā€
Kenny waved quite adorably, giving you a tight lipped smile.Ā ā€œDid you just move in?ā€
ā€œNo, I-ā€
ā€œWeā€™ve already had this talk, sheā€™s been here longer than we have.ā€ Casey interrupted, making your blood boil a little bit, her attitude almost worse than yours.
Kenny frowned slightly, but covered it up with a smile.Ā ā€œOh.ā€
ā€œYep. Weā€™ve already become besties.ā€ You said sarcastically, grinning widely, making Kenny genuinely smile a little.
ā€œKids!ā€ A middle aged man with a stupid haircut, to you anyway, walked over with hesitant look on his face.Ā ā€œWhoā€™s this?ā€
ā€œY/N, your neighbour thatā€™s lived here longer than you have. Saved you the trouble of telling him yourself, Casey.ā€ You sneered.
ā€œOh. Well, Iā€™m David and weā€™re the Millers! My wife, Sarah, is at the market right now, but Iā€™m sure sheā€™d be glad to meet you sometime.ā€ He smiled widely, making you uncomfortable.
ā€œUh, dad, chill out. Youā€™re gonna scare away the only girl I find suitable to be friends with in this shit neighbourhood.ā€ Casey whispered harshly.
You didnā€™t really want to be friends with Casey, you never really got along with girls. Clearly, reading outside was a bad choice...
ā€œHa ha, if you sass me one more time today, you will be grounded young lady.ā€ David forced another smile.
ā€œUh, Dad...ā€
ā€œShut up, Kenny.ā€
You quickly realized where the Kenny kid was in the family food chain. It was a shame, the dude was pretty easy on the eyes and seemed nice from what youā€™ve seen.Ā ā€œLook, Iā€™m just gonna go. Nice meeting you fine folks...ā€ You waved awkwardly, turning around and practically speed walking inside your house.
Well, that was fun...never going outside ever again.
The overall encounter put you in a sour mood, so when the doorbell rang you prayed to god that it wasnā€™t the yearly check in with law enforcement cause youā€™d probably get yourself in trouble with that attitude of yours.
You were mildly shocked to see that awkward Kenny guy outside your door, his eyes trained on his feet before you opened the door.Ā ā€œKenny Miller, right?ā€
ā€œUh...yeah, Miller. Uh, I just want to apologize for my, uh, familyā€™s behavior. They donā€™t have the best of manners, but theyā€™re good people, I swear!ā€ He ranted at such a quick pace that it almost flew right over your head.Ā ā€œSo, yeah, sorry.ā€
You chuckled at his nervousness.Ā ā€œYou donā€™t have to be sorry, especially on the behalf of your family. They donā€™t seem like the type to appreciate it anyway.ā€
His eyes widened, holding up his hands and shaking his head.Ā ā€œNo, no, no, itā€™s not like that! They, uh, appreciate me.ā€ You kept your mouth shut, giving him a sympathetic look with a soft smile. He sighed.Ā ā€œItā€™s that obvious, huh?ā€
ā€œTo me, it is. Iā€™ve been in that situation before, so itā€™s not that hard to notice.ā€
ā€œOh...well, they can be nice sometimes I guess.ā€
ā€œI hope so. Well, it was nice to meet you, Kenny.ā€ You stuck your hand out, smiling when he hesitated but shook your outstretched hand gently.
A week later, you and Kenny actually became friends despite the two of you being almost complete opposites. He was able to poke through your cynical exterior, which was extremely rare for someone to do. He made you laugh, smile, and actually enjoy life when you were with him. You didnā€™t like it at first, but his adorkable personality won you over.
Kenny was more than overjoyed, he finally had a friend, not one out of pity anyway. The first time you two had hung out, he cameĀ ā€œhomeā€ with a huge grin on his face. Of course, Casey had to tease him about it all the time.
ā€œI still donā€™t understand how she can be friends with that loser and not me!ā€ Casey ranted.Ā ā€œIt doesnā€™t make sense!ā€
ā€œCasey, stop calling Kenny a loser, please.ā€ Sarah sighed, tapping away on her keyboard.
As soon as Sarah said that, Kenny walked through the door with another grin on his face.Ā ā€œHey, Ma!ā€
ā€œYou donā€™t have to call me that here, hon.ā€ Sarah voiced, shutting her laptop and walking out of the kitchen, but she smiled to herself.
ā€œPop your cherry yet?ā€ Casey smirked evilly.
Kenny immediately blushed.Ā ā€œI told you, weā€™re just friends...ā€
She rolled her eyes.Ā ā€œYou obviously want to be more than just friends with her. You should just ask her out and get it over with.ā€
ā€œBut...Melissa...ā€
Casey huffed loudly.Ā ā€œDude, I already told you, sheā€™s probably moved on by now. She was a total babe, she can and probably has done way better than you.ā€
ā€œHey...ā€ Kenny frowned, to which Casey just shrugged, her eyes training back to her phone. He sighed as he sat down across from hisĀ ā€œsister.ā€Ā ā€œI do like her...but I donā€™t know how to bring it up. Iā€™m awful at talking to girls about...that kind of stuff.ā€
Casey snorted.Ā ā€œYeah, no kidding.ā€ But she dropped her amused smirk when she saw Kenny glaring.Ā ā€œSorry, sorry.ā€ She sassed.Ā ā€œI mean, it did work out with the ginger to be fair, but we have to stay in this shithole until further notice. But I really do think you should shoot your shot with whatā€™s her name.ā€
Kenny rolled his eyes.Ā ā€œY/N.ā€
ā€œYeah, whatever. Just-ā€
ā€œThat girl is bad news.ā€ David suddenly voiced, walking into the kitchen.
ā€œWhat do you mean by that?ā€ Casey asked.
ā€œUh, hello? Pay attention to your surroundings instead of that stupid phone of yours to see that we are in witness protection. We canā€™t trust any of these creepy neighbours.ā€
ā€œUh, I think youā€™re a tad bit paranoid, father dearest.ā€
ā€œY/Nā€™s really cool though!ā€ Kenny expressed.
David rolled his eyes.Ā ā€œBut we donā€™t really know her, we donā€™t know if sheā€™s a snitch or something.ā€
Casey laughed.Ā ā€œWow, you really are paranoid, dude.ā€
ā€œHa ha, very funny, just go to your room and listen to your Metallicas and AC/DCs.ā€
Caseyā€™s face contorted into a disgusted scowl.Ā ā€œI donā€™t listen to that garbage.ā€
ā€œShut up.ā€ David simply replied, making Casey stand up and storm out of the room and up the stairs.Ā ā€œLook, Ken, I get you like this girl, but you need to be careful. Donā€™t say things you shouldnā€™t and all that. You have a tendency to not know when to shut your mouth. So, donā€™t do that, kay?ā€
Kenny nodded curtly, avoiding Davidā€™s eyes as he felt his face heat up in slight anger. He knew he had some...issues with keeping his mouth shut about things that should be kept a secret, but he grew up, right? Heā€™s not as naĆÆve as he was before they went to Mexico, but hisĀ ā€œfamilyā€ still treated him like he was five. Plus, he knew you werenā€™t the type to be a snitch.
While Kenny was dealing with feeling underappreciated, you were having your own set of issues to handle. Today was the day for a check up with law enforcement to make sure you were on your best behavior. You always were, but it still made you anxious to no end. And you prayed that Kenny wouldnā€™t rush in to your house like he got into the habit of doing when you were interrogated.
Of course, that didnā€™t happen.Ā
ā€œFor fuckā€™s sake...ā€ You muttered under your breath when you saw Kennyā€™s shocked and scared face when he saw you sitting with a couple local police officers.
On your end, it just looked like he was scared of police officers. But Kennyā€™s mind immediately went haywire, thinking that you called them over to investigate them even though the police were already informed of ā€œthe Millersā€ situation.Ā
ā€œKenny, nowā€™s not a good time.ā€ You sighed.
ā€œNo, no, itā€™s okay.ā€ The police officer in front of you said.Ā ā€œWeā€™re done here anyway.ā€ He walked out of your house with his partner, leaving you and Kenny in an awkward silence.
ā€œWhat was that all about?ā€ Kenny asked, not being able to control the bitter tone in his voice.Ā ā€œDid you think weā€™re that bad or something?ā€
ā€œKenny, I-ā€
ā€œWeā€™ve been doing really well here!ā€ Kenny interrupted.Ā ā€œNo problems with anybody, been on our best behavior.ā€
ā€œKenny.ā€
ā€œI donā€™t wanna go to jail. I canā€™t go to jail. Weā€™ve only been here for a couple months.ā€
ā€œKenny, stop!ā€ You finally yelled, losing your temper.Ā ā€œThey were here to check up on me, for fuckā€™s sake.ā€
Kennyā€™s eyebrows furrowed in confusion, but still had a slight expression of panic.Ā ā€œHere for you? B-But-ā€
ā€œIā€™m in witness protection, you dweeb, same as you.ā€
ā€œOh...Wait, how did you know Iā€™m in witness protection?ā€
ā€œYour family,ā€ You finger quoted,Ā ā€œlooks nothing like you. All of you donā€™t look anything alike. How paranoid and secretive that David is, it wasnā€™t too hard to put things together. You rambling off like an absolute moron a minute ago just reaffirmed my theory.ā€
Kenny frowned.Ā ā€œDang, I thought I had worked on that.ā€
You smiled slightly.Ā ā€œItā€™s alright, Ken. Iā€™m no snitch, and Iā€™m not very judgmental about someoneā€™s past. What did you even do though? Youā€™re definitely not the type to break the law.ā€ You chuckled.
ā€œOh, well, we kinda smuggled some drugs across the Mexican border.ā€ He stuttered.
ā€œHoly shit, dude! Thatā€™s sick! What was it? Was it coke?ā€ You grinned, eager to learn.
Kenny blinked at your excitement, but obliged to all your questions, sitting down next to you.Ā ā€œNo, it was marijuana.ā€
Your face slightly dropped in excitement.Ā ā€œOh. I really think weed should be legal. Itā€™s stupid, itā€™s not even a hard drug.ā€
ā€œWell, weā€™re lucky we even made it out alive. But what did you go through to get yourself here?ā€
Now, you definitely didnā€™t judge past crimes of others, if theyā€™ve atoned for it and changed that is, but you had no idea if Kenny would judge you. You actually found yourself not wanting him to look at you in a different light, and youā€™ve never felt that way before.Ā
Kenny seemed perfectly sweet, almost too sweet to judge anyone, but on the other hand...the stuff that had landed you in the program was definitely heavier than some weed smuggling.Ā
Maybe it would be too much for him. Maybe it would be best to just make something up, something less horrible, something he wouldnā€™t be too shocked by.Ā  As tempting as that route felt, the idea of lying to him weirdly didnā€™t sit well with you, though.Ā
Kenny was quick to notice the lengthy pause that followed his question, as well as the way your shoulders tensed and your eyes averted to the parquet floor. Oh no. Had he pried into something too personal? Was he an idiot for asking?
ā€œOh, um...you donā€™t have to tell me if you donā€™t want to!ā€ Kenny hurried to assure you, slight panic beginning to etch his bluish-green eyes, his fists clenching and unclenching involuntarily. ā€œI was just curious, is all! Iā€™m sorry if itā€™s too persona-ā€œĀ
ā€œItā€™s okay!ā€ To his surprise, you pulled on a tight-lipped smile, giving him a look as nonchalant as you could manage at the moment. ā€œReally, you donā€™t have to apologize for asking. Plus, you already told me about your thing, so...ā€ You trailed off, softly, wondering how to proceed.Ā
As much as you resented the thought of Kenny seeing you differently, you decided even that unpleasant outcome would still be better than lying to him. Youā€™d rather not. You liked Kenny. Despite not having spent a tremendous amount of time together, you could tell he was a genuinely good person, and you definitely enjoyed his company. Not to mention, it would be a blatant lie if you said you werenā€™t at all attracted to him.Ā
Casey may have spent most of their interactions calling him a ā€œloserā€ in some form or another, but you couldnā€™t be farther away from agreeing with her. A part of you was positively annoyed with the way she treated him. Then again, taste is subjective. It wasnā€™t Caseyā€™s fault if she didnā€™t have a good sense of it.Ā
With a deep intake of air, you nervously flipped a loose strand of hair over your shoulder, still avoiding direct eye-contact with Kenny. ā€œI, uh...Itā€™s a rough one, really. And kind of a long story. I wouldnā€™t wanna dump something like that on you, if youā€™d rather not hear itā€Ā
He tentatively pursed his plump lips, but nonetheless nodded for you to keep going. ā€œIā€™m sure I can handle it! Whatever it is, Iā€™m not gonna judge you, Y/N. I promise!ā€Ā
Promise, huh? Guess you were going to have to see about that.Ā
Trying to ignore the rapidly increasing pace of your heart and slight tremble in your fingers, you began your story.Ā
You didnā€™t want to go into too much detail, for the fear of oversharing, but you did tell him as much as you felt you could. About how you used to have a friend...a pretty close friend, who you cared about a great deal, who had always been kind and generous, alas, a bit of a troublemaker.
About how she had fallen in with the wrong crowd, something you admittedly failed to see coming. How that crowd turned out to be a notoriously vicious gang that had it out for some other poor girl, who had apparently slept with one of the gang leadersā€™ boyfriend without realizing it.Ā
How that gang, your friend included, lured her onto a rooftop to ā€œfuck with herā€ and ā€œteach her a lesson.ā€ Only that night, they went too far and ended up pushing her off. The girl died instantly, and due to the heaping pile of evidence, it wasnā€™t a particularly long investigation. Almost everyone involved were arrested shortly after, and you, having been brought in as one of the witnesses, had a choice whether you wanted to testify against your friend or not.Ā
At first you werenā€™t sure if you wanted to do that and make matters worse for her. However, after some much-needed reflection and consideration, you decided it would be the right thing to do. Someone had died, and your friend played a part in it. You couldnā€™t turn a blind eye to something that big simply because you two were close.Ā
Your friend was put away, along with several other gang members. Still, quite a few of them were still out there, and they definitely seemed like the type to hold serious grudges. You were no longer safe at your former home, and now...well, there you where.Ā
Kenny listened intently all the while, not once daring to interrupt, not even to ask a question. By the way your breathing had hitched and your lips had stuttered at certain parts, he could tell how hard that mustā€™ve been for you to go through in the first place, and how unsettling it was for you to revisit those moments in order to share your story with him.Ā
You didnā€™t notice, but as you were nearing the end, Kenny had inched to sit closer to you, his large hand carefully landing on your shoulder with a soft but warm-hearted squeeze. He had briefly hesitated in making that move, but the need to offer you comfort and reassurance overpowered his nervousness. His only hope was that you wouldnā€™t flinch at his touch, and so he felt a huge wave of relief wash over him when you did no such thing.Ā
ā€œSo...thatā€™s about it. Sorry, I know itā€™s a fucking bummer story, compared to your weed smuggling adventure.ā€ You attempted a chuckle, only it came out as more of a sad scoff.Ā
Your heart was still pounding and you were still reluctant to look up at him. Although, as you finally noticed Kennyā€™s warm hand gently squeezing your shoulder, you felt a soothing brush of comfort spread through your limbs, and you couldnā€™t deny how nice it felt.Ā
ā€œWhoa...thatā€™s...Iā€™m so sorry you had to go through that.ā€ Kenny frowned, unsure of what the right thing to say could be.Ā
ā€œItā€™s okay, really. Iā€™ve had some time to process it and move on. Well...not completely, but Iā€™d say Iā€™m doing much better now.ā€Ā
Kenny went silent for a minute, clearly still digesting the information, and the worries you had about him looking at you differently came back in full force. You opened your mouth to ask him about it, but he beat you by a millisecond, speaking first. ā€œWhy...why were you so nervous about telling me?ā€Ā
So he had noticed. Figures. The art of the poker face wasnā€™t something youā€™d ever truly mastered. It sometimes annoyed you how easy your anxious state was to spot, but there wasnā€™t much you could do about that.Ā
ā€œI donā€™t know, I...I guess I didnā€™t want you to see me as a snitch or judge me-ā€œ
ā€œJudge you?ā€ Kenny interrupted, sounding confused about the mere insinuation. ā€œFor what, not sticking up for your friend when she had got herself involved in a murder?ā€Ā
ā€œI mean, she was still my friend, so...ā€Ā
ā€œSo what? That doesnā€™t change the fact that she got in the middle of something so horrible, that couldā€™ve been avoided, if she had paid more attention to who she hung around.ā€Ā
You couldnā€™t say you had expected that. It was almost weird hearing Kenny talk that way, but you were definitely relieved to hear where he so firmly stood in regards to the whole ā€œjudging youā€ idea.Ā
You bit your bottom lip in agitation as a thought you had been wrestling with for a while creeped its way into your mind again. ā€œSometimes I feel like maybe I couldā€™ve done something...couldā€™ve checked up on her more or somehow stopped her from hanging out with them...maybe I couldā€™ve kept her from having anything to do with it.ā€ Your voice grew quieter, sounding barely above a whisper as guilt flashed through your eyes, your muscles tensing, uneasily, at the thought. Kenny was immediately closer, his arm wrapping around you, as if trying to shelter you from your own thoughts.Ā
ā€œCome on, donā€™t do that to yourself, Y/N. You canā€™t control the actions of others, not even your friends. Least of all your friends, probably.ā€Ā
You allowed a small smile to touch the corner of your lips as you instinctively leaned into Kenny, his closeness calming you, his soft reassurances shushing the self-deprecating thoughts he could sense looming over you.Ā
ā€œYeah, youā€™re right, I guess. I just try not to think about it often, it really sucks diving into that stuff.ā€Ā
ā€œOf course it sucks. I just hope you know that none of it was even a little bit your fault. From what I can tell after spending some time with you...youā€™re a really good person, Y/N.ā€Ā
You looked up at him, noting the way your faces were only a few inches apart by that point. The close proximity brought a rosy tinge to your cheeks. ā€œYou think so?ā€Ā
ā€œI do! Why wouldnā€™t I? Youā€™re smart, youā€™re funny when you want to be, youā€™re great to be around, and heck, youā€™re one of the very few people I know who doesnā€™t make me feel like Iā€™m constantly doing something wrong.ā€Ā
Hearing that made you simultaneously happy and sad. With the way Kennyā€™s ā€œfamilyā€ treated him almost around the clock, it was no wonder he felt that way.Ā You wished he didnā€™t have to. You believed someone as wonderful as him deserved so much better. If only he had at least one person close to him who would tell him how much better he was than most guys out there, how anyone should be lucky to call him a friend... or maybe more than just a friend.Ā
In that moment, you found yourself thinking what it would be like if you were that person. You imagined it would feel the same way it always did when you were around Kenny, only better. In all honesty, you couldnā€™t find a single reason not to try. What harm was there in trying? Oh, thatā€™s right...something could go badly wrong, and then whatever friendship you had with him would be in shambles.
Thatā€™s what the pessimistic side of you thought about it. But the other side, the more hopeful and affectionate side, had other ideas.Ā
Even though you and Kenny were brought into the witness protection program by very different circumstances, you were still in it together. You didnā€™t have to hide your true identities or your past, at least not from each other. That had to count for something, right?Ā
While you were taking a second to collect your thoughts, Kenny was facing some inner turmoil of his own. With the newfound closeness of the two of you, his cheeks were positively crimson, his pulse quickening, heart thumping against his rib cage. Any doubts heā€™d had about whether or not he wanted to ask you out had vanished - he absolutely wanted to do that. But how? When? Would now be a good time? He wasnā€™t sure. Yet, he was very aware of the fact that if he were to lean in just a little bit closer, he could just kiss you right then and there...Ā
Kenny briefly remembered Davidā€™s ā€œcount to threeā€ method, but for some reason it didnā€™t feel right to use. Not with you, not like that. All he wanted was to just go with the feeling, and that feeling was beckoning him to your lips.Ā
Oh, screw it. If you were to push him away, so be it. He would probably die a little inside and never attempt to do anything like that ever again, but at least he would know your immediate answer.Ā
ā€œKenny...?ā€Ā
Your soft questioning voice reached his ears as his gaze trailed over your delicate face, taking in every feature, and with a soft but resolute breath, he leaned in.Ā
Your eyes went wide when Kennyā€™s lips landed on yours. You froze for a second, not knowing what to do. Luckily, your instantly skipping heart gave you the hint you needed to flutter your eyes closed and melt into it.Ā
He kissed you so gently, so carefully, but not like he was afraid of scaring you away. More like he wanted you feel completely safe and give you every chance to stop it the second you wanted to.Ā
You didnā€™t.Ā
Instead, you wrapped an arm around his neck, your fingertips brushing the ends of his short sandy hair, your lips moving seamlessly and warmly against his own.
Kenny couldnā€™t believe you were actually kissing him back, but damn, he was thrilled that you were. He felt the affection in him surge as the softness of your lips put his mind in a haze. His hand timidly slid down to your waist, bringing you closer to him, and you willingly went, deepening the kiss as you did.Ā
After a few blissful moments you finally broke away from his lips, your noses nearly brushing each other as you looked up at him through glimmering eyes. ā€œI was almost convinced I would have to do that myself...ā€Ā
Kenny breathed a soft chuckle, not taking his gaze off of yours. ā€œTo be honest, so was I...ā€Ā
You grinned at his burning cheeks, releasing a light chuckle of your own before reconnecting your lips for another kiss, swallowing the muted grunt that rumbled from Kennyā€™s throat.Ā
Things were going to get better now. For both of you, you were sure of it. Kenny was finally going to have someone who would show him what itā€™s like to be truly wanted and appreciated, and you were going to have someone who wouldnā€™t dream of hurting you and who you knew would always do his best to understand you, give you everything he could give.Ā
Maybe this whole witness protection program thing wouldnā€™t be such a tedious affair, after all.

Chapter 15: I Heard A Rumor
Tumblr media
Five hadnā€™t expected to see (Y/N) asleep beside him the next morning. His eyes were still heavy with sleep, but he tried his best to let them focus on her peaceful face. His side ached as he reached forward and brushed his thumb lightly across her cheekbone and he thought, heā€™d like to be able to wake up like this everyday. Minus the shrapnel wound, of course. In fact, the stinging pain reminded him of just why he couldnā€™t think of fantasies like that right now. He still needed to find Harold Jenkins, and heā€™d be able to effectively do so now that his wound had been taken care of. Leaning forward, he kissed (Y/N) on the cheek and moved to get out of bed, but she began to stir in her sleep. Freezing, he watched as her (e/c) eyes cracked open. When they rested on him, a sleepy smile spread across her face. ā€œMorning.ā€ She rasped.
ā€œMorning.ā€ He laid back down and let her stare at him. In all forms, in all angles, she was breathtaking. He almost couldnā€™t believe it. The way her eyes squinted when a new thought passed through her mind, the way they blinked twice when she snapped herself back into reality, it was all her. He wanted to comment on it, but he saw the flash of pain on her face and her smile turned bittersweet. ā€œStop doing that.ā€ He whispered.
ā€œDoing what?ā€
ā€œStop looking at me like this is the last time youā€™ll see me.ā€
She went silent for a second, her fingers tracing his features. ā€œI canā€™t help itā€¦ā€
Not another thing was said before she got out of bed and assisted Five out of the room. From down the hall, they heard a bell ringing and Klausā€™s cheerful voice. Turning, they saw him approaching the two with a smile. ā€œGood morning, lovebirds!ā€
ā€œGood morning, Klaus. What is it?ā€ (Y/N) asked as she shifted her arm that was around Five.
ā€œImportant family business downstairs. Breakfast will be provided.ā€ He grinned.
ā€œYou get more insufferable everydayā€¦ā€ Five groaned, only encouraging his brotherā€™s antics.
ā€œCome on, letā€™s go! I already got the big guy waiting on me!ā€ He began ringing the bell as he danced down the stairs. With a sigh, the pair followed him down into the kitchen, where Luther was sitting at the table. The man clearly had one hell of a night, seemingly hungover. As they entered the kitchen, Klaus immediately began pouring cups of coffee for everyone. Five and (Y/N) sat beside Luther, the girl handing the boy one of the cups. He took a sip and grimaced.
ā€œJesus. Who do I gotta kill to get a decent cup of coffee?ā€ He hissed up at Klaus as he set the cup back down. (Y/N) sighed and reached over, gently taking his hand in hers. Klaus handed her a plate of eggs and she gratefully took it, setting it down in front of Five. ā€œNo, I donā€™t want to eat.ā€
ā€œFive, you need to eat something.ā€
ā€œ(Y/N), I just said no.ā€
ā€œAnd I say eat your food. Now.ā€ She sternly demanded, as a mother would to her child. Five exhaled through his nose before picking up the fork, grumpily eating his eggs. She proudly smiled and rubbed circles on his back. Luther groaned and drank his coffee.
ā€œCan we get started, please?ā€
ā€œAnyone seen any of the others? Diego? Allison? No?ā€ He looked to his sister, who only glanced around the table, wordlessly asking her usual question. Klaus motioned towards the seat across from her. Good, Ben is here. ā€œAlright, then, this is the closest thing to a quorum...,ā€ He banged his spatula on the table, only causing Luther more irritation. ā€œ...that weā€™re gonna get. Now, listening up. Thereā€™s no easy way to say this, so Iā€™m just gonna spit it out. Yeah...ā€ He trailed off and the three frowned in confusion when he didnā€™t continue.
ā€œKlaus.ā€
ā€œI conjured Dad last night.ā€ This was met with silence. Five and Luther glanced at each other in disbelief as (Y/N) stared at her brother in shock.
ā€œWait, seriously? I thought you hadnā€™t been able to.ā€ She leaned forward.
ā€œAh, yes, but Iā€™m sober. Ta-da!ā€ He gave lazy jazz hands. ā€œI got clean, yesterday, to talk toā€¦ wellā€¦ you know, and then ended up having thisā€¦ conversation with dear old Daddy himself.ā€ He explained, (Y/N) slowly sitting back with a hum. Luther dropped his hand from his face and began to stand.
ā€œHas anyone got some aspirin?ā€
ā€œTop shelf, next to the crackers.ā€ Five answered, now finished with his eggs and drinking more of his coffee.
ā€œHey, hey, hey. This is serious, guys, alright?ā€ Klaus tried to get everyone back on track, Luther sighing and sitting back down in his seat. ā€œThis really happened, I swear.ā€
ā€œSo, what did he say?ā€ (Y/N) raised her brow.
ā€œWell, he gave me the usual lecture about my appearance and my failures in life. Yada, yada, yada. No surprise there. Even the afterlife couldnā€™t soften a hardass like Dad, right? But he did mention something about his murder, or lack thereof, becauseā€¦ he killed himself.ā€ Klausā€™s voice quieted as he looked down at his spatula. His siblings only stared, Luther the least convinced.
ā€œI donā€™t have time for your games, Klaus.ā€ This time, he actually stood from his chair as if to leave, but Klaus stopped him.
ā€œNo, Iā€™m telling you the truth, Luther. Iā€™m telling you the truth.ā€
ā€œWhyā€™d he do it, then?ā€ Five asked, narrowing his eyes.
ā€œHe said it was the only way to get us home again.ā€
ā€œNo. Dad wouldnā€™t just kill himself.ā€ Luther shook his head.
ā€œAh, you said it yourself. He was depressed.ā€ Five pointed out, (Y/N) nodding in agreement. ā€œHoled up in his office and room all day and night.ā€
ā€œNo. There werenā€™t any signs. Suicidal people exhibit certain tendencies, strange behaviors.ā€
ā€œLike sending someone to the moon for no reason?ā€ Klaus tilted his head and (Y/N) frowned quizzically. Luther only stared him down.
ā€œI swear to god, Klaus, if youā€™re lying-ā€
ā€œIā€™m not. Iā€™m not.ā€
ā€œMaster Klaus is correct.ā€
Everyone in the room turned to see Pogo enter, limping with his cane. He stopped a little ways away from the table. Placing both hands on his cane, he sighed. ā€œRegretfullyā€¦ I helped Master Hargreeves enact his plan. So did Grace. It was a difficult choice for both of usā€¦ More difficult than you could ever knowā€¦ā€
(Y/N) shook her head as she stared down at the floor. ā€œButā€¦ But Momā€™s programming, i-it wouldnā€™t have allowed her-ā€
ā€œI know, Miss (Y/N). Prior to your fatherā€™s death, Graceā€™s programming was adjusted so that she was incapable of administering first aid on that fateful night.ā€
ā€œJesus Christā€¦ā€
ā€œSick bastard.ā€ Five muttered. Luther stared down at the table with somber eyes.
ā€œSo the security tape we saw?ā€
ā€œIt was meant to further the murder mystery.ā€ Pogo clarified, Luther scoffing. ā€œYour father hoped that being back here, solving it togetherā€¦ would reignite your desire to be a team again.ā€
ā€œAnd to what end?ā€ Five questioned.
ā€œTo save the world, of course.ā€
ā€œOh, alright.ā€ Klaus sarcastically giggled. Lutherā€™s glare was then directed to their chimp butler.
ā€œFirst the moon mission and now this. You watched me search for answers and said nothing,ā€ As he spoke, Pogoā€™s head bowed in shame. ā€œAnything else you want to share, Pogo? Any other damn secrets?ā€ His siblings tried to calm him as his voice increased volume. ā€œNo, I wonā€™t calm down! Weā€™ve been lied to by the one person in this family we all trusted.ā€
ā€œIt was your fatherā€™s dying wish, Master Luther. Iā€¦,ā€ Pogo sighed. ā€œI had no choice.ā€
Luther stalked closer to him, eyes never leaving his form. ā€œThereā€™s always choice.ā€ He muttered before walking out of the kitchen. (Y/N) stared ahead, trying to make sense of this fucked up situation. Beside her, Five ran his hands through his hair in frustration.
ā€œI gotta think.ā€ He sighed and grabbed the girl by the arm before blinking into his room. The two didnā€™t speak as they stood on opposite sides of the room, trying to make sense of everything. (Y/N), for one, was a bit pissed off. The man she had been trying to get away from for so long was the very one who had planned to bring her right back. Only it was to deal with something he clearly must have known about. Pogo said it himself, they were brought back to save the world. And while that does sound like a job for the Umbrella Academy, itā€™s not like any of them would have answered a call from Reginald and accepted such a mission. They had parted ways, planned on never seeing him again. So, viewed from some angles, it was the perfect plan. Jesus, he couldnā€™t have pretended to be deathly sick?! (Y/N)ā€™s thoughts were put on hold when she heard Five approach her. He opened the wardrobe beside her and pulled out another uniform, wincing a bit when he raised his right arm. She wordlessly stood before him and helped him change his clothing. The entire interaction was intimate, but of course not sexual in any way. It was simply familiar. When she buttoned his dress shirt for him, it felt as if this was the right thing to do. As if being this close to him and doing something as casual as fixing his shirt was what she was meant to do, as silly as she thought it sounded. The silence between them was comfortable and they only interrupted it when (Y/N) asked if she was hurting his side and he would reply with no.
Once they were finished, Five gently grabbed her hand and kissed her cheek. When he pulled away, they stared at one another with wide eyes. Five had kissed her cheeks, her forehead and her hands before, yes, but he had never initiated affection like that out of the blue before. He almost regretted it, but (Y/N) gave him a giddy smile that instantly relaxed him. ā€œWell, I suppose we shouldā€¦ go save the world, Starlight.ā€
ā€œIf we must.ā€ She lightly joked and gently swung their joined hands as they walked out of the room. Klausā€™s bedroom door was wide open when they reached it, so they both walked right in. He was currently shirtless, shoeless, and playing with yarn on his bed. Five uselessly knocked on the door as he passed it to get inside.
ā€œHey. Get up. Weā€™re going.ā€
ā€œWhere?ā€
ā€œTo save the world, duh.ā€ (Y/N) furrowed her brows.
ā€œOh, is that all? Great.ā€ Klaus moved the yarn away and started to put his clothes back on as Five paced the room.
ā€œSo, Pogo said Dad killed himself to get us all back together, right?ā€
ā€œYeah, so?ā€
ā€œSo it got me thinking. I had to jump to the future to figure out when it happened, but Dad, he canā€™t time travel. So howā€™d the crazy bastard actually know to kill himself a week before the end of the world?ā€
ā€œI was thinking the same thing.ā€ (Y/N) nodded as Klaus tried to answer the question, but Five cut him off.
ā€œDonā€™t answer. That was purely rhetorical. Truth is, our whole lives, heā€™s been telling us weā€™d save the world from an impending apocalypse.ā€
ā€œYeah, but I also thought he just said that to scare us into doing the dishes.ā€ Klaus added as he struggled to shove his foot into his shoe. Five turned to him with raised brows.
ā€œMe, too. But what if the old man really knew it was going to happen?ā€
ā€œExactly, but how the hell would he?ā€ (Y/N) turned to her love, avoiding Klausā€™s elbow as he raised his arms to put his shirt back on.
ā€œNo idea. But the fact remains, his fakakta plan worked. We all came home.ā€
ā€œThe perfect, fucked up plan for his perfectly fucked up familyā€¦ā€
ā€œWell, since weā€™re here, we might as well save the world.ā€
Klaus finished dressing himself and wore a smile. ā€œOh, yeah? What, like, the three of us?ā€
ā€œUh, well, ideally, no, butā€¦ gotta work with what Iā€™ve got. No offense to you, Starlight, youā€™ve been a wonderful help.ā€
ā€œAwe, shucks.ā€ She deadpanned. As they walked down the hall, Diegoā€™s figure sprinted towards them, but turned into his bedroom, no longer in a sling. ā€œDiego?ā€
ā€œWhere have you been?ā€ Five stopped, the other two doing the same.
ā€œJail,ā€ Diego quickly answered as he threw off his jacket. ā€œLong story. Whereā€™s Luther?ā€
ā€œHavenā€™t seen him since breakfast.ā€
ā€œYeah,ā€ Klaus stretched. ā€œTwo days until the world ends, he picks a great time to drop off the grid.ā€ He commented as Diego walked back out, now in his leather gear. He cursed and adjusted his clothing before tilting his head up to his siblings.
ā€œAllison is in danger.ā€

ā€œHostage situation,ā€ Ashton said, slapping the folder down in the middle of the table.Ā
Y/Nā€™s fingers grazed the manila folder emblazoned with a giant ā€œMISSIONā€ stamp in the middle of it. Fuckinā€™ subtle, she thought with an eye roll.Ā
ā€œAm I boring you already?ā€ Ashton all but snapped at the woman, his arms crossing over his chest.
She raised her gaze to meet his, holding it steadily. Aside from Calum and Michael, Y/N and Ashton were the closest in age, with Y/N having the advantage over the man, a fact she knew he despised even though she graciously allowed him to take the lead at every opportunity. Leading had never been her cup of tea, but it was definitely Ashtonā€™s, the arrogant little bastard. ā€œNot at all,ā€ she said sweetly, flashing him a smile. ā€œCaptain,ā€ Y/N added as an afterthought.Ā
Ashton pinched the bridge of his nose, shifting his stare over to Calum, seeing if heā€™d help tame the womanā€™s snark, so that Ashton could get on with the team meeting, preferably without a headache. Calum just gave his sister a small shove, which she gladly took as a way to knock into Michael on her other side, the blondeā€™s arm going to rest along the back of his girlfriendā€™s chair.
When Ashton cleared his throat, Y/N rolled her eyes again. ā€œOh, just get on with it, you prat. Hostage situation. And ready? 3, 2, 1, action!ā€
ā€œYes,ā€ Ashton said, his tone taking on the edge that was aptly referred to Ashtonā€™s leader voice. ā€œWe, that is SHIELD, infiltrated a Hydra base about a month back in an attempt to get a spy on the inside. Problem is, that SHIELD agent was working with Hydra, and led our men straight into a trap.ā€
ā€œAnd women,ā€ Y/N added.
ā€œYes, and our women agents as well, thank you, audience participation.ā€
ā€œSo our task is to do what exactly? Search and rescue?ā€ Luke asked, leaning back in his seat.
ā€œPretty much, yes.ā€
ā€œGreatā€¦ā€ the blue eyes rolled.
ā€œYeah, itā€™s not exactly glamorous, but itā€™s well within our authorization to carry out ourselves.ā€ Ashton puffed out his chest a little, like he was proud to be trusted with such a high class mission.Ā
ā€œBlow up New York a few times saving the world and everyoneā€™s a criticā€¦ā€ Y/N joked half-heartedly. ā€œFace it, Ash, weā€™re an over glorified search and rescue team. Just tell us when weā€™re headed out.ā€
ā€œJet leaves in a half hour. Folder contains more details regarding our individual parts and a map of the compound.ā€
Lukeā€™s face lit up at the potential that individual assignments might have a little bit more glory to them, eagerly snatching the folder and passing out the packets inside to each team member before tearing into his. ā€œAw! Cā€™mon!ā€ he groaned, tossing the papers back on the table. ā€œWe never get anything cool anymoreā€¦ā€
Y/N kept her quip about how Luke should speak for himself to herself, as she glanced at her own personal assignment. Fuckinā€™ hellā€¦
ā€œYou alright, babe?ā€ Michael asked, his fingers rubbing at her neck as he started to pull his arm back across her chair.
She crumpled her assignment in her fist. ā€œHmm? Iā€™m fine,ā€ she grinned, kissing his nose.
Michael blew out his air in a huff, ā€œYeah, I know the missionā€™s kinda bullshit action wise. But when we get back we can play with these new arrows Iā€™ve been working on. These ones have tracking technology, so even if I was to miss, I wouldnā€™t.ā€
ā€œAw, but you never miss a shot.ā€
Michael smirked, ā€œI know. But now you guys can use them too. Doesnā€™t hurt to pick up an extra skill.ā€
ā€œSounds like a date,ā€ she said, this time pressing a kiss to his lips, savoring the moment. In a couple of months to a year, she added in her head, because what Michael didnā€™t know, and what she couldnā€™t tell him, was that these were going to be their last moments with each other for a while.
~~~
Exactly a half hour after Ashton had dismissed his team, the group of five sat strapped in the jet, the engines rumbling as it took off, headed for the Hydra base. ā€œEveryone has their assignment?ā€ Ashton asked, eyes darting across everyone.
ā€œYes, Dad,ā€ they all mock-saluted.
The hazel eyes rolled, and his jaw ticked in annoyance. ā€œIf someone else wants to be leader, be my guest.ā€
ā€œSo then I could be the prat everyone hates?ā€ Luke scoffed. ā€œNo, thanks.ā€
ā€œAw, Luke. Weā€™d hate you regardless if you're the leader or not,ā€ Michael joked, clapping the other man on the shoulder.
ā€œHehehe,ā€ Luke laughed in a high-pitched, mocking manner.
ā€œNobody has a problem with you being leader, Ash. You know this,ā€ Y/N said. ā€œPlus we all know that youā€™re just the one relaying orders from the higher ups. Youā€™re just better at it than the rest of us. I mouth off too much, and these three are babies. Face it, youā€™re the perfect soldier.ā€
Ashtonā€™s expression softened a bit at her words, the closest thing to a compliment sheā€™s ever given him. ā€œThanks, Y/N. That means a lot.ā€
ā€œOh, save it. It doesnā€™t make you less annoying.ā€
ā€œBabies? Who are you calling babies?ā€ Michael asked, poking a finger in his girlfriendā€™s shoulder.
ā€œYeah!ā€ Calum huffed. ā€œNo babies here!ā€
Y/N laughed, reaching out to pinch Calumā€™s cheek. ā€œYou will always be a baby to me, baby brother.ā€ Then she turned her attention to Michael, ā€œAnd you? Youā€™re just my babe,ā€ she grinned, kissing his nose.
ā€œAnd me?ā€ Luke asked, perking up his seat.
ā€œA literal infant,ā€ she grinned wider while everyone else nodded, including Ashton.
The rest of the jet ride was spent doing last minute training (Ashton), reviewing personal assignments (Y/N), tinkering with new technology (Calum and Michael), or sleeping (Luke) until Ashton called everyone back for a quick meeting.
ā€œWeā€™re approaching our drop off point.ā€
ā€œDrop off point orā€¦?ā€ Luke whistled before slamming his hand down on the table. ā€œJumping point?ā€
Ashton held up 2 fingers, and Luke grinned, pumping his fist in small victory. ā€œWe canā€™t risk the jet getting anywhere near their radar, so weā€™re landing roughly here,ā€ Ashton continued, pointing at the map. ā€œHydra base is here,ā€ he moved his finger to where there was a giant red circle. ā€œAnd safe to assume itā€™s heavily guarded on the outside.ā€
Y/N studied the distance between where Ashton said the landing spot was versus where the base was. ā€œSo weā€™re landing about a mile out, and weā€™re just gonna knock on the front door, hoping they let us in?ā€
Ashton snorted. ā€œGod no. Well, kinda. Lukeā€™s breaking in to shut down their security protocols. From there, Cal should be able to hack and override their system. Mike keeps our path clear from the outside. Making our job,ā€ he waved a finger between Y/N and himself, and Y/N gulped wondering how much he knew about everyoneā€™s personal assignments, ā€œeasier for helping Luke get the hostages out.ā€
She breathed in relief. Good. Ashton was under the usual impression of personal assignments from previous missions, and not the other, slightly more complicated bit to the otherwise usual mission. Luke, with his ability to shrink and grow with the push of a button, courtesy of Calum and Michaelā€™s technology, was the thief. The one with the power to get small enough to squeeze in anywhere unnoticed. Which set him up perfectly to gain security access for Calum, who could then override any system remotely, alongside piloting his drone for extra security coverage/fighting power. Michael usually hung back with Calum to keep Calum company, while being both an extra set of eyes, and an extra fighter with his hundred percent success rate as an archer. Which left super soldier Ashton, and non-super soldier, but highly trained martial artist Y/N to provide the bulk of fending off enemies. A ragtag team of not exactly super, but definitely better than your average SHIELD agent, SHIELD had dubbed the Avengers. ā€œSounds like we should get ready to jump then.ā€
While jumping was Lukeā€™s favorite part of the mission, the rest of the team paled a little standing in the doorway of the jet, air rushing all around. But when Ashton yelled ā€œGo!ā€ they all jumped, Luke first with a whoop of ā€œShowtime!ā€ Y/N sucked in a breath, following Luke out and grabbing Michaelā€™s hand to pull him after her, the ground hurtling upwards at her.Ā
ā€œPull!ā€ Ashtonā€™s voice directed in everyoneā€™s ears, and five parachutes deployed in unison, Y/N jerking wildly with the pullback.
ā€œWhoa, easy there,ā€ Michaelā€™s voice was both in her earpiece and shouting above the wind, his hand squeezing hers. ā€œYouā€™re good, babe.ā€
ā€œUgh, I fuckinā€™ hate that part,ā€ she groaned, her stomach churning.
ā€œAnd I hate this part,ā€ Calum groaned along with his sister, before all anyone heard was his feet hitting the ground and his string of curses as his body rolled with his landing.
ā€œYou gotta learn to land better,ā€ Y/N and Ashton both scolded, as Y/Nā€™s own feet touched down, and she ran a little with the momentum so she didnā€™t roll like her brother.
ā€œYou gotta learn to land better,ā€ Calum mimicked as he picked himself up off the ground, shooting Luke a glare, ā€œWhat are you so fuckinā€™ happy about?ā€
ā€œThat shit is the fuckinā€™ best!ā€ Luke whooped in a whisper. ā€œFuck yeah! Iā€™m pumped!ā€
ā€œGood,ā€ Ashton chuckled. ā€œHow do you feel about more flying?ā€
ā€œAw sick! Is Michael gonna shoot me?!ā€
ā€œNot the way Iā€™d like to,ā€ Michael grinned sarcastically, reaching behind him for his bow and arrow. ā€œShrink down, giant man.ā€
While Luke shrunk down to the size of a tic-tac, Ashton started instructing Michael on where to shoot, but Michael brushed him off. ā€œYeah, yeah. Close enough to get him inside, but not anywhere thatā€™ll draw attention. Cal, you got eyes yet?ā€
ā€œYeah, but Iā€™m not gonna be able to get the drone in there until Luke gets in so I can hack the system.ā€
ā€œThatā€™s fine, I got it,ā€ Luke said in the ear piece. ā€œCal, Iā€™m on your right shoe. Lift up?ā€
Calum bent down to pluck up Luke, placing him carefully on Michaelā€™s nocked arrow. ā€œJust tell me where Iā€™m aiming, Cal,ā€ Michael said, breathing steadily as he pulled back his bow.
ā€œQuarter inch to the right,ā€ Calum directed. ā€œIf you aim low, Luke can run in from the ground, or if you aim high, thereā€™s a branch that he can access the second floor from. Shooterā€™s choice.ā€
ā€œSecurityā€™s on the second floor,ā€ Luke and Michael both said, and with that, Michael inhaled, and on the exhale, sent Luke and the arrow flying towards Hydra, undetectable.
ā€œAnd now we wait,ā€ Ashton commented, stretching his arms up over his head. ā€œY/N, we-ā€
ā€œWonā€™t have much time between Cal hacking the system and Hydra finding out. And Cal and Mike can only provide so much coverage while staying out of sight. So weā€™re on a time clock of maybe 5 minutes if weā€™re lucky. I know, Ash. I go left, you go right?ā€
He nodded. ā€œGet ready to run.ā€
Y/N glanced at Calum. ā€œHow much time before Luke gets into the system for you?ā€
ā€œThirty seconds. Make it quick.ā€
She turned to Michael, tears brimming up in her eyes. ā€œAw, babe. Itā€™ll be fine,ā€ he chuckled lightly, kissing her.
ā€œI know,ā€ she answered in a shaky breath, resting her forehead against his, committing everything to memory from the sharpness of his green eyes, to the pink tint of his lips. To his calloused fingertips as they cupped her face, and the scratch of his beard under her own hand. ā€œI love you.ā€
ā€œI love you, too,ā€ he chuckled again. ā€œNow go kick some ass.ā€
ā€œLukeā€™s in. 15 seconds,ā€ Calum told Y/N and Ashton, so Y/N kissed Michael as deeply and fiercely as she could, clinging to every bit of those last 15 seconds. ā€œ2ā€¦ Iā€™m in. Systemā€™s down.ā€ But Y/N wasn't ready to let go yet.
ā€œY/N!ā€ Ashton growled harshly, dragging her by the back of her shirt and then shoving her forward. ā€œFuckinā€™ move!ā€
She swallowed her storm of feelings, shutting that part of herself off, and switched fully into Mission Mode, ignoring Calum's chuckle of ā€œDamn, what kind of good luck kiss was that?ā€ and Michaelā€™s shy but proud, ā€œI dunno, but I ainā€™t complaining.ā€
With the security breach came the storm of chaos that allowed Y/N and Ashton to enter the compound without raising any serious flags. With Ashton headed to the right flank, Y/N went left, and the first chance she had, she took it.
The Hydra soldier looked to be about her size, their attention not zeroing in on her until Y/N already grabbed them in a chokehold. ā€œSorry about this,ā€ she whispered as she snapped their neck in a swift motion, then dragged them into a nearby supply closet. ā€œAsh, Y/N, I located the hostages. Where are you?ā€ Luke asked in the earpiece.
ā€œComing up on your right, Luke,ā€ Ashton confirmed.
ā€œGot in a small tangle, be there soon,ā€ Y/N grunted as she started switching clothes with the body.
ā€œGod damn it, Hoodā€¦ā€
ā€œWhich one?ā€ both her and Calum asked with an amused glint, their favorite little bit to annoy their captain.
ā€œYou know which one,ā€ Ashton hissed. ā€œCal, time estimate. Mike, coverage report. Y/N, get a move on, seriously!ā€
ā€œIā€™m coming, Iā€™m coming,ā€ Y/N muttered before taking out her earpiece and stomping on it, leaving it with the dead Hydra soldier along with her tracker just outside the doorway of the supply closet. ā€œJust not the way you think,ā€ she then muttered quietly to herself before hurrying after the other Hydra soldiers, running for the back of the compound. ā€œWhat the hell is going on?ā€ she snapped at one of them, putting as much authority in her voice as she could.
ā€œItā€™s the Avengers. Initiating protocol 78. Get in a vehicle and get out. 2 minutes until denotation.ā€
Denotation?! Son of a bitchā€¦ Ashton and Luke were still getting the hostages out. She had to warn them, butā€¦ SON OF A BITCH!
Y/N shook off the panic and kept moving, trusting that Ashton and Luke knew what they were doing, and that Calum and Michael could keep them safe and aware of the limited time before the whole base went up in a fiery explosion. Her priority wasnā€™t on the rescue mission anymore. It never had been. Hers was to carry out the original mission that had resulted in this mission in the first place. Get into Hydra. Learn what they had planned. Destroy them from the inside. But damn, it would be a lot easier if she didnā€™t have to hide it from the guys. Her guys. Her baby brother. Her boyfriend. Iā€™m safe, she screamed in her head. Iā€™m safe! Look after each other, please!
While she got herself onto a vehicle headed out, she caught a glimpse of Ashton and Luke herding people out through a side gate and into the neighboring woods.
ā€œHood, where the fuck are you?ā€ Ashton hissed
ā€œWhich one?ā€ only Calum responded, then, ā€œShitā€¦ Y/N?!ā€
ā€œCal, where is she?!ā€ Ashton and Michael demanded at the same time.
ā€œI- I donā€™t understand. Her tracker is still by the left side of the compound where she went in.ā€ Calum started fiddling around with the drone, trying to find his sister with it. ā€œY/N? Y/N, do you copy?ā€
ā€œLuke, take the hostages back to Cal and Mike,ā€ Ashton instructed, his voice tight, but controlled under pressure. ā€œCal, where did you say she was last?ā€
ā€œTo your left. 50 yards. She should be right there, Ash, I donā€™t understand!ā€ His voice was high with panic.Ā
ā€œI donā€™t see her,ā€ Ashton reported, and there was a loud bang as he smashed his fist against something. ā€œI donā€™t fuckinā€™ see her!ā€
ā€œMaybe sheā€™s on her way back!ā€ Michael said hopefully. ā€œMaybe she was helping clear the way for you and Luke. You know she canā€™t turn down a fight.ā€
ā€œHeh,ā€ Ashton chuckled. ā€œYeah maybe. I mean, these trackers and earpieces only stay on so well when youā€™re kicking some serious ass, ya know?ā€
ā€œExactly,ā€ Michael chuckled in relief. ā€œItā€™s Y/N weā€™re talking about.ā€
ā€œWell letā€™s hope thatā€™s the case, and that Ash is the fuckinā€™ Flash because guysā€¦ this compoundā€™s gonna blow,ā€ Calum spoke up, his voice still holding a small wobble.
ā€œHow much time?ā€ Ashton asked, already running for an exit.
ā€œ40 seconds give or take.ā€
ā€œAlright, Iā€™m ou- whoa, shit.ā€
ā€œWhat?!ā€ three voices demanded.
ā€œItā€™s Y/Nā€™s tracker and earpiece. Just lying here in the fuckinā€™ hallwayā€¦ and guysā€¦ thereā€™s a bodyā€¦ā€ Ashton gave a small grunt as he flipped the body over with his boot. ā€œOh, thank God!ā€ he laughed. ā€œItā€™s not her! Probably just a scuffle where some of her gear fell.ā€
ā€œOkay, well 1.) thanks for the heart attack and 2.) if itā€™s not her, then get the fuck out!ā€ Calum yelled.
ā€œOkay, but if itā€™s not her body then sheā€™s fuckinā€™ missing, so where is she?!ā€ Michael asked.
ā€œSheā€™s not with me,ā€ Luke told them. ā€œI havenā€™t seen her this whole time.ā€
ā€œI donā€™t have eyes on her either,ā€ Ashton chimed in, running as fast and far as he could before the compound blew.
ā€œCal, anything?!ā€ Michael asked, now growing frantic as he scanned around, hoping to find his girlfriend lounging against some tree behind him. Safe. Laughing at her boys for ever thinking she was in harmā€™s way.
ā€œNoā€¦ā€ Calum choked, tears starting to spill down his cheeks. ā€œCā€™mon, cā€™monā€¦ā€ he prayed. ā€œCā€™mon, Y/N, donā€™t do this to me.ā€
ā€œCā€™mon, Y/N, where the hell are you?ā€
In the distance, Y/N heard the boom of the explosion, the vehicle shaking with the sound. She hoped her boys were safe and okay.Ā  And they were safe. But they were far from okay. Because what she couldnā€™t hear was Calumā€™s broken sob and Michaelā€™s heartbreaking scream of her name.
~~~
The jet ride back to headquarters was heavy with tension. To keep his mind occupied, Ashton set to work getting statements from the hostages. Calum and Michael sat in their seats, every muscle tightened, faces blank and frozen, tear tracks running down their cheeks. Luke was the only one who looked remotely comfortable, lounging against the wall of the jet, legs stretched out, his index finger tapping an unrelenting rhythm against his jaw as he hummed to himself.
ā€œWould you knock it off?!ā€ Calum tried to yell at Luke, but his throat was rubbed raw, so it came out as a hoarse whisper.
ā€œWhat? Iā€™m thinking!ā€ Luke defended.
ā€œThinking isnā€™t supposed to be loud.ā€
ā€œWhat are you thinking, Luke?ā€ Ashton asked, his own voice clear, but weary as he ran a hand over his face and then through his hair.
ā€œY/Nā€™s not an idiot,ā€ he started.
ā€œYeah, no fuckinā€™ shit,ā€ Calum spat.
Ashton held up a hand. ā€œLet him talk, Cal. Go on, Luke.ā€
Luke straightened up, drawing his legs up, and resting his arms across his knees. ā€œSheā€™s not an idiot,ā€ he repeated, studying his fingernails to keep his mind on track. ā€œShe always knew what she was doing. So she would have known that the mission felt off.ā€
ā€œWhat do you mean, the mission felt off?ā€ Ashton asked.
ā€œOh, cā€™mon, Ash. You couldnā€™t feel it, too? We got in and out without running into anyone trying to stop us. They didnā€™t care that we were getting out the hostages. They were evacuating. They had whatever they needed and were going to blow the place up whether we were there or not.ā€
ā€œOkay. And what does that have to do with Y/N?ā€ Ashton continued to prompt.
ā€œIā€™m saying she knew. So she went in search of any plans she could get her hands on. Anything that might have gotten left behind in the scramble to evacuate sooner than they had originally planned.ā€
ā€œSo youā€™re suggesting that instead of helping us like she was supposed to, Y/N went off to try and get us more information?ā€
ā€œThatā€™s exactly what Iā€™m saying.ā€
ā€œHmmā€¦ā€ Ashton thought, mulling over Lukeā€™s theory. ā€œThat does sound exactly like the type of shit Y/N would pullā€¦ā€
ā€œBULLSHIT!ā€ Michael screamed suddenly, jumping to his feet. ā€œTHATā€™S FUCKINā€™ BULLSHIT!ā€
ā€œHow is it bullshit?!ā€ Luke yelled back, rising to stand toe-to-toe with Michael.
ā€œBECAUSE IF IT WAS TRUE THEN WHERE IS SHE, LUKE?! HUH?! DO YOU SEE HER IN HERE?! CUZ I DONā€™T!ā€
ā€œObviously sheā€™s not with us,ā€ Luke scoffed. ā€œBut she got out, that Iā€™m sure of. Sheā€™s somewhere.ā€
ā€œOhā€¦ā€ Michael nodded, his sudden drop in tone frightening. ā€œSo, what youā€™re saying is that WE left her behind! Our teammate! His sister! My girlfriend! And we just LEFT her?!ā€
ā€œItā€™s better than the alternative of believing that sheā€™s DEAD!ā€
ā€œOh, cuz thatā€™s SO MUCH BETTER! What your theory suggests, Luke, is that WE either failed our teammate by leaving her behind, or sheā€™s dead. Regardless of which of those options is the truth, WE FAILED HER! Whatever happened to her is OUR FAULT!ā€ His hands clenched into fists at his sides and he raised them, whether to hit Luke or the wall behind him, no one was sure. Then, a sob was wracking through Michaelā€™s body, his fists dropping back to his sides as his body crumpled. ā€œOh, God,ā€ he cried quietly, curling up on the ground, his body shaking with the force of his cries. ā€œY/N, Iā€™m so sorryā€¦ Itā€™s all our faultā€¦ Fuck, Iā€™m so sorryā€¦ā€
~~~
Five months later found Y/N in a place within Hydra where she had enough access to send word out to SHIELD about Hydraā€™s plans: the creation of the an undefeatable army made up of highly skilled super soldiers injected with a recently perfected and modified serum that made Ashtonā€™s super soldier skills look like childā€™s play.
The same five months found 4/5ths of the former team, smarter than they were before, but at the cost of diminished spirits as Ashton laid the all too familiar manila folder in the middle of the table, with its pitch-black ā€œMISSIONā€ stamp in the center.
Michaelā€™s fingers went out to graze the stamp, his eyes meeting Calumā€™s as they shared a weak smile, both of them missing the way Y/N used to call the folder stupid for stating so clearly what it was.Ā
ā€œWeā€™ve received intel about Hydra's latest plans. Itā€™s not good,ā€ Ashton said, pausing for a sarcastic comment about how if Hydra was involved then of course it wasnā€™t good that never came. ā€œTheyā€™ve not only modified the super soldier serum, theyā€™ve also perfected it. A hundred percent success rate. Hostages donā€™t stay hostages for very long.ā€ Again, he paused, waiting for a witty quip, but was only given nods of understanding. He let out a small sigh. ā€œWith the intel, we also got information of where their supply of the serum is, and where theyā€™re making it. As far as our source knows, itā€™s just the one lab. Our mission is slightly different than what weā€™re used to as itā€™s a three-parter. The first part is pretty standard. Get in and release the hostages they have before they can be turned. The second part is also getting more information about the lab and the serum. We have to make sure that this is the only lab before we can go about initiating Part Three, which is destroying any and all labs we learn about. But today, our focus is on Part One and Two. Part Three will be carried out at a later date once SHIELD has time to go over everything and assess the situation.ā€
ā€œAfter I get in to override security for Cal, I can start looking around for lab plans,ā€ Luke decided. ā€œIf you can handle the hostages, Ash.ā€
Ashton nodded. ā€œYeah, I can handle that. Mike, I might need you closer to the action though, rather than staying back with Cal, and providing your backup there. If youā€™re up for it, that is.ā€
ā€œI can get closer, itā€™s fine,ā€ Michael replied numbly.
ā€œPerfect. And how are those new trackers you and Cal have been working on?ā€
ā€œReady. And injectable. Once injected, Cal has access to turning them on or off, so weā€™ll never have to think about trackers again. Like potentially losing oneā€¦ā€
ā€œAnd some of them can be fitted onto your arrows, yes? So maybe we can stick a lab worker or two with them?ā€ Ashton followed up, ignoring the bitter edge in Michaelā€™s tone.
ā€œYes.ā€
ā€œAlright. We leave in a half hour.ā€
~~~
Y/N was patrolling around the upper deck of the Hydra base when both an alarm sounded and her earpiece crackled to life. ā€œSecurity breach. Fuckinā€™ Avengersā€¦ā€
ā€œSecure the hostages and the lab,ā€ came a different order.
ā€œOn it,ā€ Y/N answered with several other voices, but she stayed rooted in her spot, knowing her old teamā€™s moves by heart. Luke was somewhere in the compound, no doubt hiding in his shrunken version. Michael would have taken a closer position now for Ashtonā€™s sake to help keep the path clear for Ashton to escort the hostages to safety. And Calum would be flying the drone, being everywhere the rest of the team couldnā€™t be, informing them of every move.
The familiar buzz of a drone a few seconds later came as no surprise, and she turned to the sound, grinning.
ā€œY/N?!ā€ the droneā€™s speaker yelled in shock.
ā€œHi, baby brother,ā€ she said, waggling her fingers in a wave. Then, her lips turned down in a mock-pout. ā€œSorry about this,ā€ she told him, grabbing the wings of the drone.
ā€œYeah, me too,ā€ Calumā€™s voice said, as he pushed a button that shot out an arrow as Y/N brought the drone down over her knee, cracking the device in half. She let out a slow hiss as the arrow passed straight through her shoulder, and then embedded itself in the wall behind her.
ā€œTell Mike to up your archery practice,ā€ she told the broken drone as she dropped the two pieces, then took off.
ā€œY/N?!ā€ Ashton, Luke, and Michael were yelling in Calumā€™s ear. ā€œYou found her?! I told you she was alive! Where is she, Cal?!ā€
ā€œBitch broke my drone!ā€ was all Calum could come up with as a reply.
ā€œCalum!ā€ Ashtonā€™s voice was sharp, Michaelā€™s desperate.
ā€œGive me a second, she broke my drone!ā€ Calum grumbled, his relief about his sister being okay mixing with the rage only siblings could have for one another when one of them broke something of the otherā€™s. ā€œOkay, okay. Yes! Fuck yes! Whoohoo! Mikey-boy the tracker arrows work!ā€
ā€œOf course they work,ā€ Michael scoffed proudly.
ā€œWell, I sort of shot through her, so I wasnā€™t sure if the tracker got in her, or the wall.ā€
ā€œYou shot my girlfriend?!ā€
ā€œShe BROKE MY DRONE!ā€
ā€œYou can build a new one,ā€ Ashton told him with a sigh.
ā€œYou shot my girlfriend!ā€ Michael continued to screech.
ā€œI had to get the tracker on her!ā€ Calum protested.
ā€œWell, fuckinā€™ track her then, and get her out of there!ā€
ā€œCal, send me and Luke her location,ā€ Ashton ordered. ā€œWhoeverā€™s closest tries to get her. But Luke, we gotta head out before they surround us. This isnā€™t like last time. Theyā€™re standing their ground.ā€
ā€œShe was on the upper deck on your side, Ash. Sheā€™s headed your way now, Luke. Towards the lab,ā€ Calum reported, his eyes on Y/Nā€™s tracker.
ā€œFuck, I gotta get out of here with these guys. Luke, get Y/N,ā€ Ashton said, guiding a small group of hostages to safety.
ā€œIā€™m in the lab, I got h- Oh, fuck me!ā€ Lukeā€™s words of hope died down as he glanced out the window of the lab. ā€œI gotta shrink back down if Iā€™m gonna get out of here. Theyā€™re fuckinā€™ swarming the lab. Ash, thatā€™s good news for you because it means your path is clear.ā€ He grabbed as many folders as he could gather in his arms, before hitting a button to shrink back down, just as Hydra soldiers muscled their way into the lab, looking around for anything out of place. ā€œ ā€˜Scuse me. Pardon me. Just gonna squeeze pastā€¦ā€ Luke talked aloud as he sprinted across the tops of boots headed for the exit. ā€œYou know, maybe I should get some of those trackers next time. Got plenty of feet to stab them into right now.ā€
ā€œDuly noted,ā€ Michael said, loosing a volley of arrows, sinking as many trackers into Hydra agents as he could. ā€œDid you get Y/N?ā€
ā€œNoā€¦ā€ Luke replied in disappointment. ā€œAsh?ā€
ā€œNo, I had to get out with whoever I could. Luke, you out?ā€
ā€œHeaded back now. I snagged some plans, if thatā€™s any consolation.ā€
ā€œThatā€™s awesome, Luke. Thanks,ā€ Ashton said, but there was a lingering note of dejection that they couldnā€™t get Y/N too. ā€œSheā€™s alive, and Cal got a tracker in her, which is more than we could have hoped for anyway.ā€
ā€œI know. But still. Sorry, Mike.ā€
Michael shook his head, straightening his bow and quiver on his back before following after Ashton and Luke back to Calum. ā€œItā€™s fine. Ash is right. Weā€™ll work with what we got.ā€
ā€œWeā€™ll get her back. Donā€™t worry,ā€ Ashton said, his words mostly directed at Calum and Michael, but also as a vow on his and Lukeā€™s part. Theyā€™d get their girl back if it was the last thing the team ever did.

Y/N sat with her mouth set in a tight line as the nurse patched up her wound. ā€œYou super soldiers are all the same. The blank expressions. Immune to normal pain,ā€ the nurse commented as they worked.
ā€œNot a super soldier,ā€ Y/N replied numbly, feeling the thread pull her skin back together. ā€œJust a regular psycho.ā€
ā€œMmm,ā€ the nurse chuckled. ā€œAnd this was ā€˜just some light training,ā€™ yes?ā€ They gestured at the wound.
ā€œSibling rivalry gone too far, actually,ā€ Y/N corrected.
ā€œMmm, well in my experience, few things come between siblings. You will be fine.ā€
ā€œI hope so,ā€ she muttered under her breath, but Y/N wasnā€™t so sure. How did she justify leaving her brother, her boyfriend, and the rest of her team in the dark about a mission they were all part of? How did she explain that she had to let them think that she had succumbed to the worst of fates? That she had to let them deal with the heartache of thinking she was dead, only to find out she was working for the enemy? SHIELD assignment or not, that wasnā€™t the kind of news she could just waltz back home with and offer up a simple ā€œHey, sorry Iā€™ve been gone.ā€ Y/N and Calum had suffered a lot between petty sibling issues, like when he first learned she was sleeping with his best friend, to much bigger issues regarding missions as part of the Avengers team. But this? Playing double agent while having to leave him completely in the dark? There was no coming back from this. And Michaelā€¦ Oh, the betrayal he must be feeling. And mix that with the guilt and blind rage? If he was functioning at all, she bet that it was an ugly sight. A shell of the man she loved. Any ounce of humanity turned off to not drown under the pain.
Still, a part of her hoped that Michael or, perhaps even Calum, would turn against orders to try and stage a useless rescue of her, now that they knew part of the truth. And while she knew it would be a meeting that ended poorly on all sides, she could at the very least slip them a note. So back in the safety of her room, she quickly penned a note, then tucked it into her uniform.
~~~Ā
Similar to last time, the ride back to headquarters was tense. Ashton kept busy by collecting statements from the hostages they managed to rescue. Then, he joined Luke in pouring over the statements and the documents Luke got his hands on in the lab.
Calum kept his eyes glued to the device that held the locations of all the trackers, watching the way Y/Nā€™s blinked steadily.
Michael sat off on his own in sullen silence, his mind racing, hands clenching and unclenching into fists in a repetitive manner. He wanted to order the jet to turn around. To go back and get Y/N if he had to carry her over his shoulder himself. He was angry at his team, and himself for leaving her behind for a second time. Angry that he couldnā€™t stop failing her at every turn. But in the anger was a twinge of hope and relief. She was alive. Which meant that they could get her back. Luke had been right along. She knew what she was doing. But he still selfishly wanted her safe next to him. He wanted her laugh ringing out as she annoyed Ashton. He wanted to be able to smell her shampoo mixing with her sweat when she rested her head against his shoulder, complaining about how she couldnā€™t wait to get back and take a long hot shower. He wanted to be able to cover her cheeks in a blush as he whispered dirty words in her ear about the things heā€™d do when he joined her in said shower.
ā€œCould you stop?ā€ Calum asked, snapping Michael out of his thoughts.
ā€œHmm?ā€ Michael hummed.
ā€œThe banging. Wanna stop?ā€ It was less of a question and more of a command.
Michael looked down at his fists, noting the redness form along the outer edge of his palms and pinky fingers. ā€œOh, sorry,ā€ he mumbled, placing his hands in his lap, not even aware heā€™d been banging his hands against the floor.
ā€œI want her back too, Mike. Just as much as you do.ā€
Enough to break protocol and go rogue? Michael wanted to ask, but all he ended up saying was ā€œI know.ā€
When they got back to headquarters, Ashton and Luke continued their work of looking over every word on every scrap of paper. Calum wordlessly joined them, his attention still held captive by the location tracker with itā€™s slow, steady blinks. No one thought it to be out of the ordinary, when Michael opted to head straight to the armory. Just hand waving and mumbles of ā€œYeah, could you?ā€s.
So Michael lugged the bag of gear into the armory, setting to the task of putting things out, and taking stock. But instead of putting his own gear away as well, he prepped it, having no intention of sitting around waiting for orders to be handed down. Not now when he knew where Y/N was. Fuck the rules and regulations. He was done with letting her down, letting her wonder why her team still hadnā€™t come for her. ā€œDonā€™t worry, babe. Iā€™m coming. I promise,ā€ he mumbled under his breath as he left the armory, dropping his bag in the doorway of his room, then going to find the rest of the team. ā€œHey, Cal?ā€
ā€œYeah?ā€ the man asked, not lifting his head.
ā€œYou got a spare one of those?ā€
ā€œOne of these?ā€ Calum questioned, holding up the device.
ā€œYeah. I, uhā€¦ Just wanna be able to see her, you know?ā€ he half-lied, making his voice crack for extra sympathy points.
ā€œYeah, course,ā€ Calum nodded, pushing his way to his feet. He walked a few feet to a docking station that held various other forms of tech. ā€œHere,ā€ Calum said, grabbing one and logging into it. He tapped a few buttons until the familiar map pulled up. ā€œThis is just hers, and this,ā€ he swiped across the screen to pull up a menu. ā€œYou can click to see the location of any tracker. Weā€™re 1-4,ā€ he twirled a finger to signal he meant himself, Ashton, Luke, and Michael. ā€œAnd Y/N is 5. And the others are various trackers we got in Hydra agents today, or just not in use yet.ā€
ā€œThanks, Cal,ā€ Michael took the device in his hands, then titled his head slightly towards Ashton and Luke. ā€œI think Iā€™m just gonna shower, then call it a day.ā€
ā€œWeā€™ll holler if we find anything interesting. Feel better, Mike,ā€ Ashton told him.
ā€œNight,ā€ Luke mumbled, even though it was barely noon.
ā€œNight,ā€ Michael repeated, heading back towards the rooms, swallowing the rise of guilt of lying to his team. But theyā€™d understand that this was something he had to do. Or so he hoped.
In his own room, he turned on music, then pulled a knife from his bag. Taking a few quick rapid breaths, he cut into the skin of his arm, prying his tracker loose. Hissing through his teeth, he dropped the tracker on his bed before bandaging up his arm. ā€œFuck,ā€ he shuddered. ā€œArgh! Okay. Here we go.ā€
~~~
Not being able to risk taking out the jet, it took Michael until well after the sun went down before he came within sight of the Hydra base with its giant searchlights, both lighting up the place, and casting it in menacing shadows.
Michael ditched the motorcycle well before he needed to as a safety precaution, before creeping the rest of the way on foot. His breath came out in huffed little clouds as he headed straight for where Y/N was. If the tracker was as accurate as Michael wanted to believe, she was right where she was when sheā€™d had her skirmish with Calum earlier. Upper level deck, left side.
It was only as Michael got closer, that he started to realize he had no plan for getting in. ā€œTime for a distraction,ā€ he whispered to himself, digging through his bag for a grenade. ā€œShowtime, bitches.ā€ He pulled the pin and sent the grenade flying. He crouched low, covering his ears, and waited.
There was a loud bang, and then a startled scrambling from inside the gate, as a couple guards rushed out to check what had happened. Michael snuck up behind one, covering their mouth with his hand and dragging them backwards. The guard kicked uselessly at the ground, thrashing about as they tried to get free from Michaelā€™s hold until they finally went limp. Quickly, Michael took their earpiece, before swapping clothes with the unconscious guard he left slumped up against a tree.
ā€œWhat was that?ā€ a voice was barking in the earpiece.
ā€œWe donā€™t know sir. We donā€™t see anything,ā€ a handful of voices answered.
ā€œWell if you find anything, put a stop to it!ā€ the voice barked again.
ā€œDid you find anything?ā€ a voice called out in the dark, a flashlight swinging in Michaelā€™s direction.
ā€œNo,ā€ he called back quickly, heart pounding in his ears as the flashlight stopped advancing. ā€œAll clear.ā€
ā€œStupid fuckinā€™ pranksā€¦ā€ the other voice grumbled, the flashlight retreating. ā€œHeaded back in,ā€ the guard spoke into the earpiece. ā€œAll clear.ā€
ā€œCopy that,ā€ a different voice replied.
ā€œWell?ā€ the first voice demanded, the small beam of flashlight turning back to Michael. ā€œAre you coming?!ā€
ā€œRight! Yes!ā€ Michael said, willing his feet to move, and controlling his breathing to not give away his excitement as he crossed into the Hydra base. He still had the problem of needing to get to Y/N and get them out without raising any alarms. Which started with first getting away from the group of three guards he walked in with without anyone stopping him. So, not thinking too much about it, Michael slowed his walk before stopping altogether. And when his guard counterparts paid no mind, he slipped his way between buildings, hiding in the shadows as he checked the tracker.
He walked purposefully towards the stairs that would lead him to the upper deck, hardening his gaze and sweeping it across the grounds, like he was just another guard doing nightly patrol duty. ā€œI donā€™t know what Lukeā€™s always bitching about. This shitā€™s easy and Iā€™m full-sized,ā€ Michael remarked under his breath as he climbed the stairs and rounded a corner.
At the end of the walkway stood a single guard, their hair obscured by the black cap on their head. But even then, it didnā€™t matter. Heā€™d know her anywhere, in any disguise. It was the way she held herself, her chin slightly tilted towards the sky, her shoulders squared but relaxed, her right foot always slightly shifted more forward than her left foot. He opened his mouth to call out to her, but the words died on his tongue. Was he just supposed to say ā€œHiā€ like he hadnā€™t left her for dead for five months?
It turned out, he didnā€™t need to say anything, as he took a step in her direction, his boots echoing off the metal floor. She whirled around, her dark eyes zeroing in on him. At the very least he expected a grateful smile as her head tilted slightly to the side, and she blinked slowly, trying to determine if her mind was playing tricks on her. But instead, she just fixed him with a cold steely look that sent the wrong kind of shiver down his spine. He cursed himself as he faltered in his next step. He had never once entertained the idea that she could have been brainwashed in all this time. ā€œY/N,ā€ he said slowly, holding up his hands. ā€œCā€™mon. Itā€™s me. Let me get you out of here.ā€
ā€œYou need to leave,ā€ she spat.
ā€œNot without you.ā€
ā€œMichael, Iā€™m serious.ā€
ā€œSo am I.ā€
ā€œDonā€™t make me do thisā€¦ā€ she whispered, bowing her head ever so slightly.
ā€œDo what? Iā€™m here to take you home, babe. Cā€™mon!ā€
She crouched, tilting her head so her eyes met his. ā€œFinal warning.ā€
Michael shifted a protective stance of his own, raising his fists. ā€œSo this is really how you wanna have this reunion, huh?ā€
ā€œItā€™s the only way.ā€
Michael dodged as her fist came swinging at his jaw. ā€œFine. Have it your way, then,ā€ he growled, throwing his own punch that landed on her body. When she huffed in annoyance and slight pain, an apology was ready to fly off his lips.
She used his pause to tackle him, the walkway rattling with the force of his body hitting the ground. ā€œCā€™mon, I know you hit harder than that,ā€ she taunted, connecting a rapid succession of blows against his upper torso.
He twisted underneath her, bringing up his arms to block her hits. ā€œJust come with me!ā€ he begged, as he threw his arms forward, sending her skiddering backwards off of him.
ā€œI canā€™t!ā€ she yelled, charging at him again.
He did his best to block her attacks, but some hits still found a place to land, small grunts leaving his mouth at each connection.
ā€œFight back!ā€ she yelled again, aiming for his jaw.
ā€œNo!ā€ He snatched her wrist, as her knuckles started to brush into the side of his face. ā€œIā€™m not gonna fight you, Y/N! This is ridiculous! Iā€™m not trying to hurt you! Iā€™m trying to save you!ā€ he tried to reason as he spun her body so her back was flush against his chest, holding her tightly to him. ā€œBaby, itā€™s me,ā€ he whispered in her ear. ā€œItā€™s me. Itā€™s Mike. Cā€™mon, baby. Come back with me. Come back to me. Please.ā€
A growl ripped out her throat as she brought one of her feet down on one his with as much strength as she had. And when Michael doubled over in pain, hearing the crunch of bone, her other leg kicked backwards, nailing him squarely in the chest, knocking him backwards.
ā€œY/N?ā€ a voice sounded in both of their earpieces. ā€œWhatā€™s going on?ā€
Y/Nā€™s chest heaved as she stared down at Michael, who stared back up at her, struggling to find his breath. ā€œNothing,ā€ she told the voice, before turning her back on Michael.
ā€œY/N,ā€ Michael croaked out uselessly, coughing. His mouth tasted of blood and every part of his body felt like it was on fire.
He had no recollection of how he got off the compound and back to his motorcycle. Just like he had no recollection of driving all night back to Avengers headquarters.
He was, however, somewhat aware of his teammates' gasps of surprise when he dragged himself into the foyer of the building, as his body slumped against the cool tile, and he finally blacked out.
~~~
ā€œWhat the fuck were you thinking?!ā€ Ashton thundered, his hand coming down hard on the table.
Michael stared blankly past Ashton, not bothering to give a response. Ashton didnā€™t care about the answer anyway, and it didnā€™t change anything. And now he understood what Y/N was doing, and she was trusting him to keep what he knew to himself.
Upon his arrival, Michael had slept for close to two days before finally waking in the infirmary, his body still badly battered, but his pain at a manageable level. He had trudged his way down to his room, rummaging through his things when the note fluttered down. With shaking fingers, he opened it, reading the hastily scrawled words, ā€œItā€™s the mission. Iā€™m safe. I love you,ā€ in Y/Nā€™s handwriting. He barely had enough time to shove the note in his pocket before Ashton was knocking on his open door, looking more pissed off than Michael had ever seen. Wordlessly, Ashton had jerked his thumb in the direction of the conference room, and wordlessly, Michael had shuffled after him, ready to accept whatever fate awaited him.
ā€œWell?!ā€ Ashtonā€™s voice cracked like a whip as Michael did nothing but blink at him.
ā€œWhat was I thinking?ā€ Michael asked, his voice soft. ā€œOh, nothing really.ā€
ā€œYeah, no fuckinā€™ shit, Mike!ā€
ā€œOh, lay off!ā€ Calum snapped, coming to Michaelā€™s defense. ā€œMike did exactly what we all wanted to do, but were too scared to do. He tried to get her back. If you wanna fault him for that, Ash, then youā€™re a bigger jackass than we all thought.ā€
Ashton sighed, sinking into his chair. ā€œIā€™m not faulting him, Cal. But what he did was reckless. It could have jeopardized all the work weā€™ve been doing. I get that itā€™s Y/N, but we still have a job to do. No one person is bigger than the mission, even if she is your sister. Iā€™m sorry.ā€
ā€œFuck you,ā€ Calum said with a sad shake of his head. ā€œFuck. You.ā€
ā€œIā€™m sorry. It wonā€™t happen again, Ash,ā€ Michael said, his voice still soft. ā€œCan I go?ā€
Ashton rubbed at his face in agitation, letting out a small scream. ā€œYeah,ā€ he said, his voice muffled by his hands. ā€œYeah. Go. Whatever. I donā€™t care.ā€
ā€œSo youā€™re just giving up?!ā€ Calum asked, his angry and broken expression sweeping across his team. ā€œJust like that? Weā€™re done?ā€
ā€œUntil we get our new orders, yes,ā€ Ashton told him.
ā€œThatā€™s BULLSHIT!ā€ Calum exploded. ā€œYou!ā€ He turned, jabbing a finger at Michael. ā€œYouā€™re just gonna walk away?! You go rogue to rescue her on your own, without me, and now youā€™re throwing in the towel too?!ā€
ā€œYou heard Ashton,ā€ Michael shrugged.
ā€œOh, youā€™re so full of shit! All of you! Fuck SHIELD and fuck you lot! Itā€™s Y/N! She needs us! She trusted us! How many times are we going to keep failing her?!ā€ Tears fell hot and fast down Calumā€™s face. ā€œPlease!ā€ he begged, his voice cracking. ā€œWe have to do something besides sit on our asses! Mike, please! You canā€™t give up on her! Cā€™mon! I thought you were on my side! Mike! Itā€™s Y/Nā€¦ pleaseā€¦ā€
ā€œNo, itā€™s not,ā€ Michael said bitterly. ā€œItā€™s not, Y/N. This,ā€ he gestured about his beat up body, ā€œis not her.ā€
ā€œFuck you!ā€ Calum cried into his hands, and let out a muffled scream of heartbreak and rage. ā€œI fuckinā€™ hate you!ā€ He raised his gaze to shoot Michael his best death glare. ā€œI hate you, do you hear me?! I fuckinā€™ hate you! Youā€™re giving up, you fuckinā€™ coward! Youā€™re supposed to love her, you fuckinā€™ bastard!ā€
Michael tried to bite his tongue as Calum continued to hurl abuse his way, but the last few words of the attack cut deep, and he couldnā€™t keep his composure any longer. ā€œI gave up?! Me?! Iā€™m the only one who wanted to go back for her five months ago!ā€ Michael went off. ā€œIā€™m the only one who went back for her a few days ago! Not Ash! Not Luke! Not you, her fuckinā€™ brother! ME! I went back! So fuckinā€™ listen, and listen good when I tell you that everything that makes her Y/N is gone! Itā€™s useless, okay?! Sheā€™s Hydraā€™s now. The quicker you learn that, the better.ā€
ā€œI FUCKINā€™ HATE YOU!ā€
ā€œONLY BECAUSE YOU HATE YOURSELF MORE AND YOU KNOW IT! We all have to live with what we did. You have to live that you didnā€™t have the guts to go save her yourself. Iā€™m not gonna carry that guilt for you, Cal. Iā€™m not carrying any of your guilt, or Ashā€™s, or Lukeā€™s. Because bottom line is I fuckinā€™ manned up when she needed us, while you three sat on your asses. So go ahead and hate me. Say I jeopardized the mission, or that I failed her. I donā€™t give a fuck. Because at least I fuckinā€™ tried, which is better than the three of you can say.ā€
Michael could hear Calumā€™s scream echoing off the walls as he hobbled back to his bedroom. He could also hear, or rather feel, the slam of Calumā€™s own bedroom door a few moments later.
Michael eased his way on his bed, the sheets freshly changed after he had left his blood splattered tracker on it. He knew a new one had been injected in him at some point over his state of unconsciousness, and he briefly wondered if it was the same one heā€™d ripped out. No sense in wasting technology when it wasnā€™t broken, after all. Laying back into the pillows, Michael dug out the note, and the device that still had Y/Nā€™s location, seeking comfort in her looped handwriting, and the steady blinking of the device.
~~~
It took another week before orders came down, and Ashton summoned them all into the conference room. Michaelā€™s fingers brushed against the empty chair between him and Calum as he took his seat. It took more willpower than he cared to admit not to slug Calum when the other man growled lightly under his breath. He doesnā€™t know any better, Michael had to remind himself. If he did, he wouldnā€™t be acting this way.
Ashton set the manila folder in the center, and when no one moved, he dove right in. ā€œBetween the files Luke was able to get, all the statements we have, the information weā€™ve gained from the trackers, and the intel SHIELD has from their agent inside Hydra, we have all the information needed to bring this to an end, once and for all. This is an all hands on deck situation. SHIELD is officially running the whole operation. Theyā€™re taking care of the hacking and gaining control of Hydraā€™s operating system. They already have a unit assigned to deal specifically with destroying the lab. Our job is pretty simple. Weā€™re just soldiers.ā€
ā€œActual action?ā€ Luke asked, leaning forward slightly.
ā€œActual action,ā€ Ashton said, smiling a bit. ā€œSomething Iā€˜m sure weā€™ve all been itching to do for quite some time.ā€
Luke pumped his fist, ā€œFuck yeah!ā€
ā€œAnd Y/N?ā€ Calum asked.
Ashton sighed. ā€œBased on personal experience, we can assume sheā€™ll be fighting for Hydra. So yes, itā€™s a good chance sheā€™ll be around. Ideally one of us comes across her before the rest of SHIELD so we can subdue her, and get her out safely. But sheā€™s not our priority, and yes, before you start, I tried to convince SHIELD into letting us specifically deal only with finding Y/N and getting her back. But all I got in response was bureaucratic bullshit about how we were being employed to do a job, and how we arenā€™t exactly in a position to ask for any favors.ā€
ā€œSo play good little soldier, but if we see our chance, take it?ā€ Michael guessed.
ā€œYes, exactly. And Mike-ā€
ā€œIā€™m not fighting, I know,ā€ Michael cut him off. ā€œDo I at least get to come and hang out wherever we set up base camp? Help with security, and the like?ā€
ā€œYes, of course. Youā€™re not being punished, Mike. Youā€™re not fighting because you donā€™t have medical clearance. But youā€™re still coming along. All hands on deck.ā€
Michael nodded. ā€œCool. Thatā€™sā€¦ Cool. Thank you.ā€ He was fully expecting to be benched, and expected to stay behind. A lesson from SHIELD about how even the Avengers had to follow their orders. But getting sidelined only because he was still injured? Well, thatā€¦ Fuck, he could handle that no problem.
ā€œBe cooler if we can finally get my sister backā€¦ā€ Calum muttered.
ā€œWeā€™re gonna try, Cal,ā€ Ashton said.
ā€œYou said that last time, and look what happened.ā€
ā€œSoā€¦ half hour til take off, yeah?ā€ Luke asked.
ā€œNot quite,ā€ Ashton chuckled. ā€œWe leave tonight to meet up with SHIELD at the base camp theyā€™re setting up just outside of Hydraā€™s radar. Then we go in just before dawn. Iā€™ll give a 30 minutes heads up before we head out though.ā€
~~~
After the worst night of sleep he ever remembered getting, Michael got up just as the sun was beginning to brighten the sky from a dark purple blotch sprinkled with stars to holding soft shades of pink around the edges.
He stumbled his way to the cafeteria tent, finding the rest of his team at a table, each clinging to their coffee cup like a lifeline. ā€œHowā€™d you sleep?ā€ Ashton asked, as Michael took a seat.
ā€œLike absolute shit,ā€ Michael answered honestly. ā€œYouā€™d think for how high tech SHIELD is, the bastards would have found a way to make camping missions less miserable.ā€
ā€œGotta cut expenses somewhere,ā€ Ashton chuckled darkly, taking a sip of his coffee. ā€œFuckinā€™ bastardsā€¦ā€
ā€œFuckinā€™ bastards,ā€ the other three repeated in agreement as a group of higher ups appeared in the entrance of the tent.
ā€œFirst wave rolls out in 10 minutes,ā€ the one in the middle barked. ā€œReport to your positions, and standby.ā€
Everyone in the tent gave half-awake salutes, and the group of higher ups continued on their way. Then slowly, between stifled yawns, people started getting up from tables, dumping their half eaten breakfasts, and half drunk coffees, before going to their places.
Luke drummed his hands on the tabletop, a grin breaking across his otherwise tired face. ā€œItā€™s showtime, boys!ā€ he whooped before pushing himself to his feet. ā€œLetā€™s fuckinā€™ go!ā€ He rested a hand on Michaelā€™s shoulder, dropping his voice into a low whisper, ā€œWe got ourselves a girl to bring home.ā€
In spite of everything, Michael couldnā€™t help but laugh at Lukeā€™s infectious enthusiasm. ā€œStay safe, guys,ā€ Michael told them as his three friends joined the rest of the crowd dashing off to their assignments.Ā
Only after the last man had cleared out, did Michael finally get up himself. He made himself a tray of breakfast, before going off in search of one of the security tents. ā€œAnything I can help with?ā€ Michael offered the first person who looked in his direction. ā€œMichael Clifford. Avenger.ā€
The SHIELD agent looked Michael over, with the boot on his foot, face still sporting a small bruise, and scoffed. ā€œHere,ā€ he said, shoving a clipboard in Michaelā€™s hand that wasnā€™t clutchingĀ  his tray of food. ā€œThis is a list of everyone involved in the operation. Those of us staying to do security are already accounted for. But the rest have been given strict instructions to check back in when they return. Whenever that is. You can be in charge of checking them in by the triage tent.ā€
ā€œGee, thanks,ā€ Michael muttered, tucking the clipboard under his arm. ā€œTriage isā€¦?ā€
The agent pointed to a tent with a giant hospital cross decorating the top.
ā€œCool. Thanks.ā€ Michael forced a tight-lipped smile before making his way over to a long table set up just inside the coverage of the hospital tent.
ā€œBack already?ā€ another SHIELD agent asked, pulling a clipboard close to them. ā€œName?ā€
ā€œOh, no, Iā€™m helping you guys with check-in.ā€
ā€œOh. Have a seat, then.ā€
ā€œHey, is Y/N Hood on this list by any chance?ā€ Michael asked as he took a seat.
ā€œNobody by the name of Hood has been checked in yet.ā€
ā€œNo, yeah, I know. I meantā€¦ is she on the list at all? Like are we expecting her to be one of the people checking in.ā€
ā€œYouā€™d have to check the list. I dunno, sir.ā€
Michael rolled his eyes. ā€œOf course. Thanks anyway.ā€
ā€œNo problem.ā€
~~~
The sky had transitioned into a soft blue, the sun peeking out from behind the trees, suggesting that at best itā€™d only been an hour, maybe two since Michael took up residence at the triage tent. But it felt like a lot longer, and if something didnā€™t happen soon, he was going to lose it.
From his spot, he could hear the engagement of combat and gunfire, so he knew the mission was well underway. But, God, waiting for everyone to get back was so fuckinā€™ boring! And it wasnā€™t that he wasnā€™t used to being the one hanging back, because he was. But this wasnā€™t hanging back to provide back up. This was just waiting. Painfully boring waiting. His breakfast lay next to him, discarded and half picked over.
He was about three seconds from excusing himself to the bathroom just so heā€™d have a reason to get up and walk around, when a laugh rang out. A laugh heā€™d know anywhere. ā€œY/N?!ā€ he shouted, scrambling from his chair.
The laugh paused, turning into a soft gasp. ā€œMike?!ā€
ā€œY/N!ā€ Michael shouted again, rushing as fast as he could in the direction of her voice. ā€œY/N!ā€ he called out for the third time, happily as he saw her pushing her way through a small group of SHIELD agents returning to camp.
ā€œMike!ā€ she shrieked, before running full speed towards him.
He got his arms open just in time for her to crash into him. ā€œOw, ow, ow,ā€ he winced as he hugged her tight.
ā€œOh, my God!ā€ she said, holding him out at armā€™s lengths. ā€œAre you okay? What happened to you? Whereā€™s the rest of the team?ā€ the questions fell rapidly from her lips. ā€œOh, Mike!ā€
ā€œIā€™m okay. Somebody beat me up pretty good, but Iā€™m fine. The guys are off helping SHIELD play soldier. Oh, God, youā€™re back! And youā€™re you!ā€
ā€œDid you get my note?ā€ she asked, nuzzling her face into his neck.
ā€œYeah, I got your note.ā€
ā€œSo you forgive me?ā€ Her brown eyes were wide and soft, and maybe even a little fearful as she peered up at him.
ā€œOf course, I forgive you. You didnā€™t have to go so hard as to break my foot, but of course I forgive you, baby. Fuck, Iā€™m just glad youā€™re finally here. For good. Safe.ā€
They could have stood there forever in their locked embrace. And they would have if someone wasnā€™t clearing their throat to get the coupleā€™s attention. ā€œMaā€™am, we gotta check you in.ā€
ā€œItā€™s fine,ā€ Michael waved them off. ā€œI got her checked in. Itā€™s fine.ā€
The agent shrugged, and walked off.
ā€œCā€™mon, letā€™s sit. We can catch up while we wait for the rest of the guys,ā€ she directed softly.
~~~
ā€œSo Luke was the only one who believed I knew what I was doing?ā€ she chuckled as Michael relayed the past five months of utter shit to her. ā€œRemind me to thank him when he gets in.ā€
ā€œYeah, I probably owe him a proper apology for that still. Should probably apologize to Ash and Cal, too. A lot of things got said in anger that shouldnā€™t have.ā€
ā€œAt least you didnā€™t tell your best friend that you hated him,ā€ Y/N pointed out, trying to calm Michael out of his remorse.
ā€œYeah, but still. We all sat around twiddling our thumbs until this last mission. I mean, we didnā€™t know what to do. We didnā€™t know where you were, or if you were okay. And when Cal told us you were okay like Luke had guessed, I dunnoā€¦ I snapped. I thought I could rectify my mistakes by coming to get you myself. I never once thought that you were with Hydra on purpose. I hadnā€™t even thought you could have been potentially brainwashed by them. I justā€¦ I dunno. Went blind with rage and every other emotion Iā€™d been swallowing since that first mission.ā€
She nodded understandingly. Then, ā€œCan I ask you a question?ā€
ā€œAnything.ā€
ā€œHow did you find me? When you came back on your own.ā€
Michael pulled the tracking device from his pocket, which he kept permanently in his pocket along with her note. ā€œAfter the first mission, we upgraded our trackers. Well, we just used the technology we came up with for my tracker arrows, and injected them into ourselves. So that way itā€™s a little harder to dump,ā€ he explained with a slight tease in his voice that made her giggle. ā€œAnd we loaded some arrows with them too, obviously. I nicked a few Hydra agents with them. And Cal got you with the drone.ā€
ā€œBut when Cal shot me, the arrow went clean through me. He was too close. Entry and exit wound.ā€
ā€œThe trackers are set to eject at the first point of contact. Pretty nifty, huh?ā€
She hummed in proud approval. ā€œPretty fuckinā€™ nifty indeed. Fuckā€¦ Iā€™ve missed you, Mike.ā€
ā€œIā€™ve missed you, too,ā€ he said, wrapping an arm around her and kissing her hair, breathing her in. ā€œSo fuckinā€™ much.ā€
ā€œAnd Iā€™m telling you,ā€ a familiar voice growled, ā€œthat I have the bloody tracking device right here! Sheā€™s not at the Hydra base! Sheā€™s rightā€¦ inā€¦ tada!ā€ Calum said, sweeping the tent open.
Ashton and Lukeā€™s eyes went wide, their mouths working to sputter nonsense. Y/N got to her feet, offering them all a shy wave. ā€œHey, boys.ā€
The magic words broke the spell, a giant grin painting each manā€™s face, before they were all rushing towards her in a gleeful cry of ā€œY/N!ā€
ā€œY/N, what the actual fuck?!ā€ Ashton tried to scold but he was laughing too hard. ā€œDo you have any idea how worried we were?ā€
ā€œSorry, Ash. SHIELD orders,ā€ she giggled, hugging the man tightly. ā€œMissed ya too.ā€
ā€œSo it was you! You were the spy on the inside! Fuckinā€™ brilliant!ā€ Luke marveled. ā€œGo in to rescue the hostages after our first spy betrays us, and replace them with a trusted Avenger. Wowā€¦ Thatā€™s fuckinā€™ genius!ā€
ā€œSo I take that as Iā€™m forgiven for worrying you guys, causing you guys to fight amongst yourselves, and having to break Calā€™s drone and Mikeā€™s foot?ā€ Y/N asked with a hopeful smile.
ā€œAbsolutely,ā€ everyone but Calum told her.
ā€œCal?ā€ she asked, turning to the man. ā€œBaby brother? Forgive me?ā€
Calum narrowed his eyes, but there was no hardness to the expression, suggesting he wasnā€™t actually angry. ā€œYou owe me a new drone, first.ā€
ā€œDeal!ā€ she said, throwing her arms around him in a tight hug. ā€œFuck, Iā€™ve missed you guys!ā€
ā€œGlad to have you back with us,ā€ Ashton smiled. ā€œGuys, letā€™s go check in, so we can all go the fuck home, yeah?ā€
ā€œYes, Captain!ā€ they all saluted with a laugh, heading towards triage to check in, and check out.
ā€œFuck, I canā€™t wait to get home and shower,ā€ Y/N complained, her right arm thrown over Calum, and her left one thrown over Michael as she trudged happily between her boys once again.
ā€œA good, long, hot shower sounds perfect,ā€ Michael whispered against her ear. ā€œAnd I think I can come up with a couple of other good, long, and hot activities for us after that shower,ā€ he added, nipping at her playfully.
ā€œMmmm,ā€ she giggled, leaning into him. ā€œThink you got the strength for all that?ā€
ā€œFor you? Always. And we have a lot of making up to do. Might take days.ā€
She shivered against him, causing the other three to groan. ā€œAt least wait until after we get home before jumping all over each other, yeah?ā€ Ashton asked.
ā€œNo promises,ā€ they answered honestly.
Ashton groaned again. ā€œCā€™mon, letā€™s give them a minute,ā€ he said with an eye roll as he guided Calum and Luke forward to the line to check in.
Michael wasted no time in their friendsā€™ quick departures to hook his fingers under Y/Nā€™s chin, guiding her to meet him in a fierce kiss, fingers knotting in each otherā€™s hair, breath rushing out of their lungs. ā€œPromise me youā€™ll always come back to me,ā€ he whispered when they had to break apart to gasp for air, resting his forehead gently against hers.
ā€œI donā€™t think I can keep that promise, because Iā€™m never leaving you again.ā€
ā€œGood, because Iā€™m never letting you go.ā€
The Impromptu Sleepover Part 1
ā€œAlright! The adults are asleep what do you guys want to do?ā€
Alya being Alya, decided to take over the sleepover to celebrate Marinetteā€™s friends finally realizing (or in most cases finally speaking up) about Lilaā€™s lies.
ā€œSwordfight!ā€
ā€œMovie Marathon!ā€
ā€œLetā€™s play truth or dare!ā€
Different ideas all resound from the girls currently huddled in Marinetteā€™s room, all the boys trying to pretend they didnā€™t exist.
Only nine people were there, Adrien had wanted to come to the sleepover, but his dad wouldnā€™t let him.
These 10 were the only ones from her class to come back to her and apologize once they realized who the real victim was.
Marinette almost couldnā€™t believe her eyes when Alix, Alya, Kagami, Chloe, Nino, Kim, Max, Nathaniel, and Marc came up to her asking for her back.
The only ones who had actually believed Lilaā€™s lies were Alya, Max, and Nathaniel but the others still apologized for not speaking out for her.
This group apology and cry session that immediately followed ended up with them holding a sleepover to celebrate their reconnection.
One thing Marinette forgot about though. Was the fact that Chat Noir would come to hang out with her on Fridays.
Which is why, when pebbles started hitting her window. She damn near had a heart attack when everyone else noticed immediately stopping their conversations.
ā€œMari, Love, Darling dearest. Who, might I ask, is throwing pebbles at your window?ā€
Every single one of her friends look at her with shit-eating grins as Kim blinks up innocently at her like he didn't just confirm for everyone there was in fact someone outside throwing a rock at her window.
Persistently.
With a deep sigh, Marinette grabs a lightsaber and spray bottle from the back of her closet.
"Alya, I am giving you permission to film this. I am NOT, however, to post this to any social media, and no one except for those in this room are to ever see the footage unless I give explicit permission otherwise. Understand?"
Alya nods frantically pulling out her phone as she and Marinette climb up to the balcony.
"Oh, Romeo Oh Romeo. Where art tho Romeo?"
Chat Noirs sarcastic call sounds from below with a bouquet of Alstroemeria, Amaryllis, and Blue Irises.
Alya hides behind the railing, just out of Chat Noir's sight as she films the interaction.
With a deep sigh, Marinette turns to Chat with regret and sorrow written all across her face, making Chat pause.
"Princess? What's the matter-"
"I'm sorry Chat Noir. But it's over."
The stricken look on his face almost makes Marinette feel sorry for him.
Almost.
"I don't understand? Did I do something wrong?"
With another deep sigh, Marinette runs a hand over her face.
"It's over Chat."
Faking tears, Marinette ever so slowly pulls the lightsaber from behind her back turning it on making the red illuminate half her face.
"I have the high ground."
Marinette sniffles for good measure as Alya finally catches on. Turning her phone back to Chat to see him looking like he was about to cry before it finally clicks.
His face goes blank as he stares up at one of his best friends.
"I hate you so much."
Marinette cackles as he pulls out his baton, stretching up to her balcony to be face to face with her.
"I can't believe that guy calls you 'Angel'. Your halo hides your horns too well and- Ladyblogger? What are you doi- Eep!"
He cuts off abruptly as Marinette squirts him in the face with the spray bottle making him reel back with a yowl.
In his haste to get away, he knocks himself off balance starting to fall over backward until Marinette grabs his bell yanking him forward.
"Okay, that is it! I'm going home and I'm telling Ladybug you're picking on me."
Marinette wheezes, trying to get her breath back and just giving up. Climbing down her skylight to collapse in a pile of giggles.
Chat and Alya both follow her down. Alya pushing her off her bed so Kim has to catch her before she hits the floor.
"Please Alya. PLEASE, tell me you got his reaction on film."
Alya smirks showing the video currently saving to her phone.
"Of course I did. Now we have a new guest here now assuming that Chat wants to stay for the sleepover."
Chat's eyes widen, looking every part the excited kitten.
"Can I?! I've never been to a sleepover before!"
All of the girls gasp in horror, surrounding Chat as they search through drawers and Marinette's closet.
Marinette, always one step ahead, runs to chat.
"Go in the bathroom, detransform put these on, and come back out. I'm assuming your Kwami eats camembert cheese since you constantly smell like it. I swear no one here is going to find out your identity or even try if they don't want me to put them on blast with all of the dirt I have on them. Now go!"
Chat is shoved into the bathroom, the door slamming shut behind him. Doing as he is told in fear of Marinette, Chat detransforms catching Plagg as he cackles in the air.
"Oh, I like her! She'd make a great kitten, with how easy it is for her to cause chaos, just how I like it!."
Shaking his head at his cackling Kwami as he got dressed. Putting the mask Marinette made him on trying it securely around his head. Stepping out to find Marinette coming back with a LARGE tray of food and everyone else huddled around Alya's phone.
Chat can't help the startled yelp he lets out when Alix pulls him down to her, gently petting his hair as she glares at Marinette.
"You're a monster Marinette. How could you do that to him?! Look at his face! His little baby face! He looked heartbroken!"
Marinette snorts at the playful scolding.
"Let him go, Alix. Go find your own stray."
Alix snorts as Marinette pulls a blushing Chat to her hugging him close. Marinette sits down dragging him with her as he buries his face in her hair. Too embarrassed to speak.
He doesn't have a babyface. Does he?
"Awe come on Mari, you found the cutest one the least you could do is share him!"
Everyone laughs as Kim makes a grab for Chat just for Marinette to pull him closer to her.
"Noooooo, this is MY alley cat! Go find your own!"
Chat Noir would never admit how hard he had to fight down his purr when Marinette started petting his hair.
You know. Before he lost that battle and a purr sounded loudly through his chest.
"Please stop. It's not fair and you're embarrassing me. Mariiiiii! Stooooooop."
Everyone laughs when Chat complains for Marinette to stop, even as he starts to melt into a puddle on her lap.
"One of these days I'm going to tell M'lady on you and she's gonna dangle you from the Eiffel Tower."
Now, under normal circumstances, everyone would be worried, but it's hard to be serious when one of Paris's superheroes is melted in a puddle in your friend's lap with a purr so loud it's hard to understand him.
"I'm pretty sure Ladybug would dangle YOU from the Eiffel Tower for being in a girls room this late, without letting her parents know. Even more, so that you detransformed in front of us. Still want to tell Ladybug on Marinette?"
Everyone turns to Marc, Nathaniel's adorable spouse as they radiate badassery.
Chat's purr stutters before starting up just as loudly again.
"I will no longer be telling M'lady."
Marinette snorts leaning back on her chaise as Chat adjusts himself so he's laying between her legs with his head on her stomach. Facing the rest of the class as Marinette plays with his hair.
"Are you guys dating?"
"Of course they are Cesaire. Ridiculous-!"
"Utterly ridiculous!" "Ew! No!"
Are the two different responses that cut Chloe off. The group finishing Chloe's catchphrase as Marinette and Chat Noir look at the rest of the class in disgust.
"Okay, first of all. Chat what the HELL do you mean 'ew'? Marinette is a babe, and everyone in this room has had a crush on her at least once before. How dare you say 'ew' like you would never date her you would be incredibly lucky if she even considered you."
Alya states with a finger in Chat's face.
Alix, Alya, Kagami, Chloe, Max, Kim, Nathaniel, Marc, and Nino all looking incredibly offended for Marinette even as she blushes and tries to hide her face.
"Guys, stop! And what do you mean all of you? Half of you are dating each other!"
Chat snickers at her distress, pulling out his burner phone and snapping a picture of her face.
"Okay, there may or may not be a literal 'Queen Marinette Club" or 'QMC' for short. We even have several social media accounts dedicated to giving you the credit you deserve. Before you ask this started that one time we went to Gotham and you answered all of the Riddler's riddles and yelled at Nightwing and Robin for their poor fashion choices and called Batman a furry when he tried to stop you."
Surprisingly Nathaniel is the one who answers instead of Alya as she pulls out her phone.
"We didn't even start the club! It was some people in Gotham who did. Max is the one who found out about it."
Sweet Marc, sweet sweet Marc never knowing when to stop before Marinette popped a blood vessel from blushing so hard.
"Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn, Cat Woman, The Riddler, the entire Batfamily (Batman included), and even some of the Waynes follow the accounts. Not to mention the other celebrities you've befriended like Mr. Stone and Ms. Nightingale."
Max reads off of his phone, seemingly proud of Marinette's followers.
"Even my mom follows you, Mari. That says something."
Chat looks up cackling as Marinette tries to suffocate herself with a pillow, Plagg rolling around on her hair as he clutches his stomach.
"Dang! Pigtails has some, what's it called? Clout! You're famous, kitten!"
Marinette whimpers from behind the pillow, her face practically radiating heat.
Chat snorts before turning back to the group.
"Number one I am well aware that Marinette is awesome and that I would be the luckiest man in the world to have her as my girlfriend. However, she's basically my little sister, same as Ladybug. Sorry to burst your bubble, Alya. Number two, she already has a boyfriend, has for a little over a year now, and he scares me. I am not testing if I really have nine lives cause he would take all of them. Number three, can you show me the 'QMC' accounts I want to follow them."
The room is silent as Marinette glares at Chat.
"What? Why are you looking at me like that? Princess? It's not like this is new informa-! They didn't know did they?"
Marinette reaches under her, pulling out a very nice-looking dagger from under the cushions of her chaise.
"Say goodbye to eight of your lives Chat. I need a new black fur hat."
Chat yelps scampering away from Marinette on all fours as she lunges for him with Plagg chasing after them laughing.
They keep running around the room until they pass Kim and he reaches out and grabs Marinette, trapping her in his arms.
"Okay, nice knife. Not sure where you got it nor do I want to know. Second of all, what's this about a boyfriend?"
Everyone surrounds her as Alix pulls the dagger from her hands putting it back under the cushions.
"Why haven't we heard of any boyfriend? Are you out of your mind?"
Alya's calm tone is very misleading as Chat hides behind her.
"He didn't want anyone to know just in case people claim for me to be a gold digger. Scratch that, I didn't want anyone to know so he didn't get sued for assault if anyone called me a gold digger and he found out."
Chat snorts.
"Yeah, you, definitely a gold digger. You know, since you didn't even realize who he was for the first 5 or 6 months of your relationship."
Marinette's glare does nothing as a blush covers her face.
"We don't speak of it Chat. I can and will still skin you."
Everyone looks at Marinette in shock.
"Okay, so all we know is that they are a he. He is rich enough to make people assume Marinette, Marinette of all people, is a gold digger and they are in a secret relationship. Who is it?"
Max looks up from his phone, where he is no doubt taking notes.
Marinette looks at the ground mumbling something that no one but Chat can make out thanks to his super hearing. He laughs and walks over to her phone unlocking it as Marinette finally answers.
"Damian Wayne."
Everyone looks at Marinette in a mix of shock and confusion before Chloe bursts out laughing.
"Only you Marinette. Only you would get over your crush on a millionaire heir to fall for a literal billionaire heir without even realizing it."
She breaks off into hysterical laughter as everyone turns to chat who is now on Marinette's computer connected to her phone as a facetime call takes place.
It answers on the second ring to someone who is most definitely NOT Damian Wayne.
"Hey Pixie Pop! Sorry, but I had to steal the phone from demon spawn. He was trying to kill me and Dick with a spoon and lunged for his phone as soon as it started ringing. Me and Dick were closer so we grabbed it and are now trying to find somewhere to hide so he doesn't actually kill us. Dick wanna say 'Hi'?"
Everyone hears a shout of 'sure' from someone out of the frame before the phone is passed over to someone who looks much like the first, except they are older and have no white streak in their hair.
"Hey, nettie! How's school?"
Chat smirks, covering Marinette's mouth as she tries to reply. A door slams shut as the two guys hunker in the near darkness, a lock clicking into place.
"School is great thanks for asking. Could be better but we are all getting by."
Two faces appear on screen looking a mix between worried and angry.
"I swear to god if you are holding Pixie Pop for ransom you will have the rage of all of Gotham fall upon you."
Chat just looks confused before remembering that he's wearing a mask and is holding Marinette's mouth shut.
"Oh! No, I'm not holding her hostage, we're friends. Chat Noir, Parisian superhero at your service. I just wanted to prank her boyfriend, she's having a sleepover and I was invited."
Their expressions immediately relax.
"Oh good. I was worried about what would happen when everyone else found out. Especially Damian."
Both boys shudder and smile as everyone else in the room comes into the frame.
One of them opens their mouth to speak before a loud bang comes from the door. Two equal looks of fear take over their faces.
A second later a loud bang fills the air as the door basically explodes open, high-pitched screams of terror fill the air before all is silent a new face filling to screen.
"Sorry Habibti, my brothers are imbeciles with death wishes. What do you need?"
"Wow, Habibti? I didn't know you felt that way about me Damian, or should I give you a pet name too?"
Chat's grin SCREAMS mischief, as Damian looks down an ice-cold glare in place.
"Let go of my girlfriend before I fly down there and skin you alive regardless of her wishes."
Everyone shivers at the pure venom in Damian's voice as Chat lets go holding his hands up in the air as he grins.
"Sorry, sorry. Letting go."
Marinette and Damian both glare at him before turning to each other, both looks immediately softening.
"Sorry, Shaytan. I'm having a sleepover and Chat outed our relationship and decided it would be funny to call you."
His smile is so gentle it shocks the rest of Marinette's friends.
"Don't worry, it's not your fault the Cat is a moron. I miss you. When do you think you can come back?"
Both of them choose to ignore Chats highly offended 'Hey!' as well as everyone else in the room with Marinette.
"That depends on when you want me there and when I can catch a flight."
Damian sits down at a table pulling a laptop to him as he sets up his phone so she can still see him.
"Well I want you here now, and I can have you a flight soon enough if I ask Father to get the family jet ready. If I work fast I can have you here by tomorrow morning, if not sooner."
Marinette looks shocked.
"You can't just ask your Father to get a plane ready just for me Damian!"
He glances back at the phone before going back to his computer.
"Why not? Everyone here loves you and if you're worried about the cost of it I can assure you a single minute of your time is worth far more than a measly plane ride."
Kim and Alya make cooing noises at the two from the sweetness of it all as Kagami steps up wrapping her arms protectively around her.
"Before you make any more trip plans you are going to tell me what you plan to do with Marinette in the future. I will not allow her to be some temporary girlfriend if you aren't serious about her."
Damian turns back to the phone looking past Marinette to acknowledge the others for the first time since the call started.
"I can assure you I don't want Marinette to be temporary. I plan to marry her and I truly couldn't care less if any of you have a problem with it."
Marinette's face invents a new shade of red as everyone coos over how cute that is. After getting over their initial shock of course.
"Habibti, do you want them to be able to come with you next time you come over? I can have father speak to their parents if they don't agree right away."
"Are you sure that would be okay?"
Marinette's timid voice makes Damian look away from his computer.
"Why wouldn't it be? If you don't want them to come with you then they don't have to, I know that you have some trouble with a few of your classmates. Seeing how late it is there I would have thought these were the ones who didn't turn on you or came back once they realized how idiotic they were to leave in the first place."
"Rude, but true."
Damian chooses to ignore Alya.
"No I would like for them to come, it could be fun! I'm just worried about space and where everyone would sleep."
Damian snorts.
"You have nothing to worry about, if you don't want them to stay in a hotel they can stay with us in the manor, there's plenty of space. And if there isn't enough space you can just sleep with me in my room."
He finishes off with a cheeky grin as Marinette sputters.
"You can't just say stuff like that Damian! It was bad enough that you said you planned to marry me, you don't need to add sharing a bed to the pile!"
Damian has the audacity to look confused.
"What do you mean? I never hid my plans to marry you nor my feelings, I don't get what the big deal is about sharing a bed anyway. It's not like Alfred would let us do anything and we wouldn't even have the chance with the circus monkeys I call brothers."
Several offended voices with 'I heard that!' 'Excuse me?' and 'You love us and you know it!'s all sound from his end.
Alix and Kim are basically collapsed onto each other as they wheeze at his bluntness.
Marinette sighs resting her head on her hands with a 'why do I even bother?' before looking up again.
"Fine, how is next weekend for everyone. I know Adrien will want to be included and I don't think he has anything going then. It will give me enough time to convince everyone's parents if need be and pack."
Everyone agrees and they end the call. Damian and Marinette saying their respective I love yous and Goodnight/Good mornings.
"I'm going to duel him."
"Kagami NO!"
Kagami looks Marinette dead in the eyes before smiling.
"Kagami yes."
Hello, Em! I was wondering if you would mind helping me find my type? Iā€™ve narrowed it down to the Si-doms (slight margin of error for the IFP types, but I donā€™t see enough evidence for Ne or Se to be sure), but from there Iā€™m having a hard time determining which fits better. I feel weakest when I donā€™t have much structure, and at work, I can be a bit of a pain because Iā€™m always asking for clarification on new tasks. In college, I always felt like the vague assignments where the instructor (1)
doesnā€™t actually tell what they want were the worst. Most people see me as the logical one in the group. I think part of why Iā€™ve maintained that image is that most of my family (especially my momā€™s side) has never learned how to deal with their emotions well, so they try to always joke or become sarcastic. Iā€™ve always gotten along with my dadā€™s family because I never feel like Iā€™m being used as some sort of verbal target practice. Iā€™ve never been good with expressing how I feel and prefer to (2
show it through actions. Whenever Iā€™m dealing with family, Iā€™m always honest (or else just quiet), and even when Iā€™m talking to someone I donā€™t know well, I have a hard time softening the blow. I try, but itā€™s not something that comes easily. Iā€™m typically relieved when someone else can take over dealing with people because I hate having to deal with people when they get upset. I typically take a quick dislike to people I think are too dramatic, but as long as theyā€™re nice I can get over (3)
it fairly quickly. One of my favorite things about my boss is that he always asks how Iā€™m doing when I come in in the morning and he always willing to jump in and cover shifts if he thinks someoneā€™s not feeling well. I also have a difficult time with people who jump into things without thinking. One of my major issues with my mom is that I sometimes feel like Iā€™m having to constantly re-plan things around her last-minute decisions. One of the things that my dad always points (4)
out as a weakness is that Iā€™m too nice to people. I have a really hard time saying no to people, and I can be really easy to guilt trip. Iā€™ve been pulled into a lot of things I really didnā€™t want to do because someone else talked me into it. A few years ago, I went with a group to an amusement park, and I got dragged along on things that I hated, all because my cousin asked. Even on the occasions when I have stood my ground, itā€™s taken a huge toll on me to know that Iā€™ve disappointed someone (5)
Iā€™m often torn between what others say about me and what I actually think. Every time I rediscover MBTI I get sucked into this endless loop of trying to somehow make sense of all the things others have said about me, what I think, and how it fits into the system. I was trying to pick a college major, I was constantly asking others what they thought would be a good choice, because I genuinely didnā€™t know what I wanted. I knew things I didnā€™t want (marketing psych, which I felt were mercenary) (6)
but I was torn between what I felt I ought to do (something that helped others) and what I was really interested in (history). I never thought of myself as good with people, but most people I know tell me that I come off as very sweet and likeable. Maybe not warm, but approachable and unintimidating. I tend to come off as studying people and waiting to judge them, even though there are some things where I just say NOPE and it can take years for me to change my mind. (7)
I did that when I first met my sisterā€™s now husband. I thought they were rushing things and I was pretty upset over how much my sister had changed after they met. Iā€™m still warming up to him, but he seems harmless. Iā€™ve never been one to share my feelings with other people, but it can be so helpful to at least see them written out. I typically will have a decent idea of what I feel, but writing it down helps me really understand it and see when Iā€™m really just being silly. Thank you!! (8)
---------------
Hi anon,
This absolutely sounds like ISFJ; I would rule out the Fi-Te axis completely given the emphasis on what other people want and their opinions and I suspect the only reason you considered high Fi was the commonly-found, but in my opinion incorrect statement that Fi users are more private with their emotions.
Your conclusion of high Si seems right; you have difficulties with spontaneity and prefer clear, specific instructions, and prefer to observe before making up your mind though can be very slow to change it, and this post has a lot of very concrete examples.
As mentioned the strong emphasis on what other people want, at times to the exclusion of what you want, and placing a high value on social niceties seems clearly like Fe. Not all high Te users are sarcastic but I've found a lot of them (myself included) are at least very comfortable with it/don't mind a little verbal target practice as long as they can return it to sender. ISTJs (and other TJs) are also typically far more comfortable turning down requests from others and tend not to rely on others quite as much for personal decisions or self-assessment, especially since it sounds you're either towards the end of your college career or shortly post-college and would probably have at least some capacity to use tert Fi if you had it.
One thing I've thought about a lot regarding FJs and being "the logical one" is that I do think self-assessements are sometimes erroneous, but also, especially if you're in your early-to-mid-20s and especially if you have a more spontaneous friend group, an ISFJ very well might be the logical one. Maybe not in the academic sense of logical, but in terms of common sense and making decent life decisions, yeah, an ISFJ will probably outdo most ENTPs even if the latter's Ti is higher, because a lot of behaviors motivated by Si and Fe (caution, consideration for the feelings of others) are smart things to do in terms of like, living life. It's less "logical" than "reasonable", but that's a pretty nitpicky distinction on my part. Plenty of deeply logical people are actually wildly unrealistic, because people don't behave logically, so the actual reasonable thing to do is, well, behave like an ISFJ and take past behaviors and relevant context and how people might feel into account.
What I have to say: This is really not what I typically write, but please allow me my self-indulgence. Also, I am rusty and unpracticed, but this made me happy to write.Ā
What this is: Yoongi has gone through twenty-seven phone numbers over the last ten years, and you havenā€™t changed yours since high school.Ā
What this wants to be: Romance
What this warrants: Rated R for Rotten Relationships (and other things)Ā
You hold your sisterā€™s new baby reverently. The baby is so small, and youā€™re scared that your bad morals would somehow seep into the skin through contact diffusion.Ā
ā€œI feel like Iā€™m already the irresponsible aunt,ā€ you whisper, shooting your sister a terrified look. The baby isnā€™t even sleeping, but what if your bellowing voice would upset him. ā€œAre you sure-ā€Ā
ā€œYes,ā€ she says firmly, ā€œYouā€™ll be a good godparent. Thereā€™s literally nothing to do except spoil your nephew every now and again.ā€ She pauses, a thoughtful look crossing her face. ā€œUnless we die. Then I guess youā€™d have to be more of a parental figure...ā€Ā
You and your brother-in-law interject at the same time in a cacophony of protest.Ā
ā€œOkay, we are not dying,ā€ he sighs as your octave increases by a half-step, ā€œPlease do not say that as I hold your offspring in my arms. I canā€™t feel them by the way. Seokjin, can you take him? I donā€™t want to drop him.ā€Ā
Seokjin takes the baby, and you feel bereft of warmth. Itā€™s a weird feeling to note that considering your firm No Babies Policy. You miss the baby already. This is witchcraft.Ā
ā€œItā€™s just a fucking hypothetical, relax,ā€ your sister laughs, her eyes softening considerably as she sees Seokjin coo over his son.Ā
ā€œIf our babyā€™s first word is ā€˜fuckā€™ I am not taking responsibility,ā€ Seokjin says mildly, eyes never leaving his baby. You donā€™t really blame him.Ā
ā€œAnd youā€™re not blaming me either. Iā€™ve been good,ā€ you say.Ā
ā€œOh please, everyone curses younger these days anyway. Iā€™d rather my son know than not know, you know?ā€Ā Ā
ā€œYouā€™re pushing it,ā€ Seokjin warns.Ā
ā€œYouā€™re such a dad,ā€ she scoffs.Ā
ā€œAnd you like it,ā€ he counters.Ā
ā€œYeah,ā€ she admits. ā€œYeah, I do.ā€Ā
You check your phone for the time, and itā€™s thirty minutes before the official start of the baby gathering. Time for you to leave.Ā
ā€œHey, it was good to see you guys. And the baby,ā€ you tell them, hugging both lightly so as not to disturb the tenderness of the moment. Bear hugs were for a different day. ā€œI have to head out, but Iā€™ll come visit a lot, okay? Iā€™ll even babysit. For free.ā€Ā
ā€œNot staying for lunch?ā€ your sister asks, looking very sad and disappointed, but you steel your heart. The two of you have inherited your motherā€™s knack of guilt-inducing looks, and youā€™re not about to fall for it.Ā
ā€œNot today, no.ā€Ā
Seokjin nods, bidding you to take care. He knows why you want to leave before the crowd gets too heavy.Ā
Unfortunately for you, cosmic luck was not on your side because as soon as the front door shuts behind you, the elevator dings and Yoongi steps out, clad head to toe in celebrity black and holding five Burberry shopping bags. Thereā€™s no one around, so you donā€™t particularly feel the need to stand on the niceties of greetings and choose instead to brush past him in favor of the elevator.Ā
ā€œAnd hello to you too.ā€ he remarks sarcastically.Ā
ā€œGo to hell,ā€ you reply, wishing that you didnā€™t have to be in a close fucking hallway because you could smell his cologne.Ā
ā€œOh come on-ā€Ā
You press on the close door button rapidly, and the doors shut out Yoongi with a soft, muted click.Ā
Twelve hours later, you get a text from an unknown number. Coward is all it said. You stare at your phone screen in bed, seeing typing bubbles start and stop and start and stop. Mister Unknown Number finally settles on silence because nothing follows after the one-word epithet.Ā
It feels like a dare.Ā
--
Yoongi finally puts his phone down. You were too smart and too self-respecting to try this all over again with him, and he wants to kick himself for ever thinking that goading you would work when you were clearly over him-
His phone vibrates intensely and consistently. Youā€™re calling him.Ā
ā€œHello,ā€ Yoongi says, picking up the phone after just a single ring. Desperate, to be sure, but he wasnā€™t positive youā€™d wait for five rings anyway.Ā
ā€œYou changed your number again,ā€ you say without preamble.Ā
ā€œIā€™ve actually had this number for two years now,ā€ Yoongi says. ā€œBeen getting hacked less and less. Guess you never saved the number.ā€Ā
ā€œWhy would I?ā€ you ask, petulance peppering every syllable of your words.Ā
ā€œWhy didnā€™t you stay for the luncheon?ā€ he asks instead of answering your question.Ā
ā€œAnd sit in a room with you for a couple of hours pretending everythingā€™s normal? No thanks,ā€ you scoff. ā€œAnd luncheon? Really?ā€
ā€œYou missed out on the shrimp toast.ā€Ā
ā€œI think Iā€™ll live.ā€Ā
ā€œSo whyā€™d you call?ā€Ā
You could take the easy way out. Save your pride and your face, and pretend that you still donā€™t carry a torch for Yoongi. You could lie and say you just wanted to call and make sure it really was him. But you were always a glutton for pain, and he was all too happy to oblige to your needs.Ā
ā€œYou wanna come over?ā€ you offer, not feeling an ounce of trepidation that heā€™d reject you. Yoongi always came when you asked.Ā
ā€œWhere do you live?ā€Ā
ā€œItā€™s the same place as last time.ā€ Itā€™s a test. Letā€™s see if he even remembers my address-
ā€œBe there in thirty.ā€Ā
--
Heā€™s late by a few minutes, but Yoongi explains through interrupted kisses and hasty undressing that there was traffic, and he showered-Ā
ā€œYou could have showered here, you know,ā€ you mutter, pawing at his dick and biting down on the juncture between his neck and shoulder. Yoongi always like a little pain.
ā€œIā€™ll shower here after.ā€ (After he fucked you at least twice, minimum. After he got to see you naked and temporarily his. After he was somewhat satisfied but much too sweaty for sleep.)Ā
And then itā€™s No Talking Time for a short while because he has your face occupied with inhaling scant oxygen against the mattress while his own head was buried between your asscheeks and legs, lapping and sucking at you like he had something to prove. Could this count as some form of asphyxiation? Probably. You donā€™t expect his mouth to make you feel close to losing control. The act had always unnerved you, but you found yourself uncaring of past discomforts and losing yourself into the feeling of soft, insistent lips.Ā
Yoongi eats you out with soft grunts, hands holding your thighs apart and firm. Donā€™t move, his hands say. His tongue up your cunt isnā€™t any sort of giving on Yoongiā€™s part; this was all selfish. He wants you to cum and feel starstruck and ruined, wants you to get it through your head that your flesh craved his flesh in the same animalistic way he needed you.Ā
You turn your head around just enough to be able to get out, ā€œYou can sto-ā€Ā
But he silences you with a warning slap on the ass. You are not to be deterred.Ā
ā€œStop with the tongue,ā€ you order.Ā
ā€œYouā€™re insane,ā€ he hisses, pulling away and shamelessly licking his lips. ā€œYou canā€™t ever just let me-ā€Ā
ā€œPut it in now,ā€ you demand.Ā
Yoongi lets out a terse sigh. ā€œI should just leave right now,ā€ he grumbles, getting up on his knees to rub his dick against you and nudges the head on your opening. ā€œI shouldnā€™t be here.ā€ He presses inside at ā€œhereā€ and wrenches a moan from your lips.Ā
ā€œThen leave,ā€ you sigh, pressing your ass back against him, relishing in the feeling of being filled again by Yoongi. ā€œJust go home and jerk off instead. Thatā€™s what youā€™re good at, right? Leaving me?ā€Ā
ā€œYouā€™re a bitch for bringing that up during sex,ā€ Yoongi says, fucking into you steadily and slowly, resisting the urge to pound into you like his baser instincts demanded. He was going to enjoy you for as long as he wanted. He knew you wanted it rough and bordering on violent, but he wasnā€™t going to add more ammo to your already large arsenal of Reasons To Hate Min Yoongi.Ā
Yoongi leans over completely, letting his torso lay flush against your back, unbothered by your sweat as it mixed with his own. You were going to feel every last inch of him inside and out. He pumps in and out slowly, sucking on your neck and breathing into your hair with audible moans of enjoyment.Ā
ā€œIā€™m not leaving,ā€ he groans, reaching over to rub your lower stomach gently, as if comforting you. The intimacy of this wasnā€™t lost on you, but you canā€™t find the words to tell him off. You missed his heat and the familiar weight. You are only human, after all.Ā
Yoongi threads his fingers through your unkempt hair, stroking gently before balling his fists into a pronounced grip. He turns your head to the side and kisses you, your neck straining from the awkward, uncomfortable position. But it reminds you of the beginning - of the before times when things were easier in the shadows of his success and unavailability.Ā
Itā€™s impossible not to feel things when he fucks you this way, and kisses you, and moans soft nothings into your ear like youā€™re the only woman heā€™s ever done this with. You are atrocious at protecting your heart, and even after two years of icing him out, Yoongi barges into you like itā€™s nothing.Ā
ā€œDonā€™t stop,ā€ you moan, heart thumping against your chest. You really, really canā€™t stand to want him so much.Ā
ā€œI wonā€™t,ā€ Yoongi reassures, kissing the corner of your eye. He doesnā€™t speed up, and instead chooses to test the limits of your patience with languorous but firm strokes. ā€œNot until you tell me to.ā€Ā
There was nothing that compared to this - not heated fucks with attractive strangers, or money, or getting crossfaded by the Han River. When Yoongi did this to you, you almost felt like he loved you.Ā
--
Yoongi sleeps silently besides you in the sunlight, completely worn out after an emotionally exhausting round of sex that made him cry when he came inside you. Heā€™s usually sensitive to the light, but heā€™s out cold and completely drained. You hadnā€™t expected that part - the crying. You thought it was just sweat until you heard rattling breaths and a hiccup.Ā
You watch him breathe silently from your place in his arms, unwilling to leave the small cocoon of warmth. Youā€™re the opposite of him, and right now, youā€™re wired. Youā€™ll probably end up crashing sometime later in the day, but for right now, youā€™re content to just watch him sleep in your bed, on your pillows, smelling like your body wash.Ā
Youā€™re too old to be scared, and yet this moment fills you with dread; that once the spell of sex and yearning was broken, everything would tilt back to its regular axis, and youā€™d be all alone again. If you were younger, you might have up and left already. Leave him before he leaves you. And itā€™s not like you havenā€™t done that before. Your entire relationship with Yoongi is always filled with one person leaving behind the other one because nothing about the two of you ever lined up properly.Ā
But this time, youā€™re too tired to run away. So you close your eyes and pretend to sleep until it finally comes to claim you.Ā
The Adventures of Silvertongue and Olive
<<Previous part Masterlist Next part>>
Warnings: homophobia, and Loki not knowing he's a Jƶtun (I put it as a warning 'cause it's just straight up sad).
Tumblr media
5- Love is an arrow
The training room was bigger in Asgard, Leaf thought. He stretched the thread and untensed the shoulders, closing one eye to guide the arrow. He hit the target exactly in the middle, perfectly done. Loki clapped slowly from the doorframe.
"Since when were you there? Why do you keep watching me do things without letting me know? That's stalking".
"I'm making up for all the times you've done the same in the library", Loki said, crossing his fingers behind his back and walking to his spot. A dagger appeared in his hand. "Do you know how to throw daggers?".
"No, but I could try", said Leaf, and Loki scoffed.
"It's not that easy".
"Let me try".
Loki gave him the dagger, and Leaf put it over the arch, stretching the thread as if it was an arrow. Loki chuckled.
"That's not how you throw a dagger. It won't work".
Leaf ignored him and hit the target with the dagger, slicing in two the previous arrow. Loki gasped dramatically, very theatrical. But, underneath his acting, he was a little impressed.
"It works", said Leaf proudly, shaking his hair away from his face, and handing him the arch and an arrow. "Now you try my thing".
Loki accepted the arrow and refused the arch. Leaf laughed. He closed one eye, made the dagger and arrow disappear from the target, and pointed with his free hand at where the arrow should land. He threw it as if it were a dagger and it hit the target exactly in the middle.
"You're very good".
"I can say the same".
They stayed in an awkward silence for a while. Loki thought of something to talk about.
"So, your dad's dead", pointed out. He then realized, maybe it wasn't a good conversation starter. It wasn't even a question.
"Indeed".
He mentally slapped himself.
"What happened?".
"Someone killed him".
"Yes, but why?".
"Why would anyone kill a King?".
"You think it was your sister, pray tell?".
Leaf stayed in silence, but then answered,
"No, of course not".
"That didn't sound really convincing".
"She's incapable of taking action by herself for anything. She's probably just glad someone did it for her".
"You really hate her, don't you?".
"Just as much as you hate your brother, I presume".
"TouchƩ".
They talked, and mocked, and showed magic tricks, and even taught each other how to throw daggers and arrows the proper way. Loki knew the prince's real name yet decided to stay with Leaf. Leaf did not like his nickname a lot, and barely flinched every time a relative would call him that, but somehow, he wasn't bothered by Loki saying it. He didn't know. And, of course, he didn't like not knowing.
"Why do you not enjoy Leaf? It's pretty", he asked, and Leaf played with the tip of an arrow over his lips. The sun was setting, and they decided the roof was the best place to be bathed with the marvelous golden hour's rays. Leaf scoffed.
"It's not".
"It suits you".
"I bet it does".
"I wasn't being sarcastic. It's not silly or anything if that's what worries you", said Loki, speaking barely in a whisper. The place was so silent they could've swore they were the only ones on the realm. Loki's gaze rested on Leaf. Leaf's eyes avoided him, with a trace of embarrassment.
"It's not that", he clarified. "It's Leaf, fromā€¦ leafy".
"Leafy? Well, that does sound a little silly, to be honest, butā€¦".
"I think it's the variant ofā€¦ fruity, would you say?", he muttered, and Loki stayed quiet with his eyes wide open. "It's a slur".
"A homophobic slur", musited Loki under his breath. "Your parents call you that?".
"Everyone calls me that. They called me like this for so long, the nickname stayed as a normal name. Though I'm sure they remember where it started", he explained, and then hurried, "though they never meant it to offend me. It's just a joke".
"I don't see you laughing much".
"I'mā€¦ used to it. It's fine".
"That's the saddest thing I've ever heard", said Loki, standing up. "I'm re-baptizing you", he decided, looking around. The prince of Vanaheim laughed. "Would you like to stay in the forest-theme? What aboutā€¦ ah! I know!", he appeared a book in his hand -a big, dusted book that barely fit over his hands-, and scanned through the pages quickly.
"What are you doing?".
"Look. Here. This tree is perfect for you".
"Theā€¦ Olive? The one that gives those weird looking fruits?".
"The trees thrive in places where others may witherā€“and olives donā€™t only thrive, but thrive for century after century", read Loki aloud. "Olive trees will produce loads of fruit in the cruelest heat and driest gravels of Asgard, Midgard, Vanaheim, Svartā€¦".
"Very interesting. But, why?".
"Well, you kind of resemble him".
"The tree?", he asked, raising his eyebrows and reading the page again. Loki nodded, a bit embarrassed. That all sounded so cheesy, completely unlike him. "I like it".
"Besides, being gay and a royal? Definitely a challenge, I would know. Yet they love you, it shows. You do thrive in places where others may wither", added Loki, and the prince immediately denied with his head.
"I'm not! I'm not gay. They call me that becauseā€¦ I don't know, I'm not", he stuttered.
"Well, I wither", clarified Loki. ā€œI would knowā€.
"Oh".
"I suspect it may be one of the main reasons they're always trying to get me to lose to Thor in the competitions for the Throne".
"Really?".
"What other reason could there be? I'm good at everything they asked me to be. I wish to be King and to do it rightly, I'm pure Asgardian royal blood, I'm not focused on anything other than ruling if I'm asked toā€¦ The only mishap for them would be to have a bisexual King".
Olive stayed silent, sinking in that information. Maybe if he told them he was, in fact... not straight, he would be free from his royal duties. But, wasn't that the main reason he wanted to be free from them after all? To not have to bear the judgement inside the Palace? He could just sink his sexuality very, very deep down, where it would never be found. Marry a girl he wouldn't love. Pray he doesn't get to be King. Pray his secret is never unveiled.
"Do they know? Or do they just suppose it?".
"Oh, I'm very queer", laughed Loki, laying on his back and staring at the sky. Olive did the same. "I've never even had to say it. It was just an implicit characteristic of me. Besides, I can change into whatever form I wish to".
"Really? Like what?".
"Like a cat. Or a snake. Or my brother. Or a woman", he counted. "Thor said in Midgard they call this genderfluid. I'm not entirely sure, because, yes, my gender sure fluctuates, as well as my body, butā€¦ I can also turn into an animal, or an object. It's not only my sex and gender what fluctuates. It's my entire being".
"That sounds so fascinating. Can you turn into something right now?".
"Of course. What would you like me to turn into?".
Olive drew a hand to his lips, and Loki's gaze followed instinctively.
"Can it be an object? Like an apple?".
"Please don't eat me", said Loki with a grin, and behind a halo of green lights, he shapeshifted into a golden apple.
"Can you speak like this?", Olive asked, and the apple remained silent and still. "What aboutā€¦ an ant?", and the apple soon transformed into a small ant. Olive put a finger on the floor and Loki climbed to it. He walked around his nail for a while, and Olive observed amused. "And can you go bigger?".
He left Loki very carefully on the floor, and Loki thought for a moment before deciding on a huge lion. Olive gasped, pulled back for an instant, until the lion began to act like a very big cat. Olive patted his head and scratched behind his ears.
Loki finally shifted back into himself and growled, shivering. He took off a lion's hair from his tongue, disgusted.
"The bigger the form, the harder it is to get back to normal", he explained.
"How so?".
"Sometimes it works weirdly. I once turned Thor into a dog and back to himself, and next day I threw a ball and he instinctively ran towards it".
"I always thought he seemed like a golden retriever".
"Leaf!", called his sister from the nearest window, "get back, Mother wants us to try on something for the party!".
"Going!", answered Olive, and getting back to Loki, he asked, "party?".
"Apparently. Might be because of the engagement, so itā€™s more like a formal dance than an actual party", he clarified. "I'll introduce to you some lady friends you could invite as a companion, if you need to".
Olive got disappointed, and wondered what he was originally expecting.
"I'd love to, see you then".
"Good night".
