All Might's chapter was very interesting because it was the least focused on romance and instead looked like it had its own mini plot going on! O.O

The second one... is a very odd chapter from the MHA spinoff SMASH! A series that I've brought up a couple times (⁠;⁠ŏ⁠﹏⁠ŏ⁠)

MHA SMASH! is sort of like that family member no one mentions or brings up, it's a comedy (so the only non canon) spinoff, and while it certainly funny at times the author tends to go a little too overboard with his crude jokes and dirty humor (such as below) (⁠ꏿ⁠﹏⁠ꏿ⁠;⁠)

I was never going to mention this chapter but I might as well now since they decided to reference it (^^;)

In the chapter, the LOV members have just met each other, and Kurogiri innocently brings up the topic of ice breakers.

They draw straws, and the winner would be allowed to command the others to do fun things. Shigaraki wins, and commands the others to die. Kurogiri says no and moves on to the second winner, Toga. She tells Shigaraki to put on bunny ears, and Dabi to put on cat ears, and for some reason... everyone else put poor Kurogiri's outfit together. The whole thing is much much worse in full O_o

And then you just had to go above and beyond and do a portrait of him for his birthday!!!!! It’s hung on the living room center wall so that it’s the first thing anyone sees! Honestly, this man is a brute, but your art envokes his softer side! A side that he hasn’t been in touch with for…well, a long time.

Makes sure that everyone and I mean, everyone, is aware of your talent! Still, he tries to find the side hussle in it, soliciting customers for you and all. 😭😭 Will trash talk the chalk art children make on the sidewalk, which ‘…that’s not nice, they’re children..’ you say. He shrugs, nobody is as good as you.

Obito:

Finds out and tries to ‘secretly’ commission you lmao. Makes it totally obvious too, his handwriting is shit and eveeeerrryyyyone knows who Tobi really is…. Plus how can you even begin without discussing what he wants done!! Duh, Obito! Unfortunately for him, you are more interested in drawing matters of the flesh. He’ll only show his chest, nothing more.

‘That’s fine.’ You shrug, and get to work. Obito, however, does not have the resolve to sit still! It’s frustrating to no end, but alas, after what seems an eternity— its done. Sort of. Still much to add, but the basics are there and you’ll work better when he’s not asking how does it look every twenty minutes.

Eventually you do finish this beautiful piece of him, and Obito cries. You made his scars tolerable and beautiful with your mind’s creativity, he feels less self conscious about them, only a little.

Shisui:

Is the least normal about it when he discovered your sketchbook — more like snatched and played keep away. Had to fight him for it, literally. Will ask you to paint/draw him naked…many times lol and you respectfully say no... Not that he likes people to see him naked (ok maybe a little?) but he secretly hopes it might happen one day. It would be a private thing for the two of you, cause he wants that ass.

And when you do cave to his whim, just to satiate him. He’s nervous lmao. Had this oh so macho man idea of rocking a hard on but Shisui simply maintains his usual semi. It’s nice though, you make sure it’s extremely detailed..as he asked for.

But, ‘(y/n)… this is chibbi!!!’ Lol, jokes on Shisui!! He didn’t say how to draw his pp.

Itachi:

Is the most normal about it. Though he still will praise you every time you finish a piece and show him, he is still massively impressed. How does your wrist not get tired? …maybe this is why your hand jobs are so good. 😈 Just watching you try a new technique (pointillism, which is my favorite style) makes his wrist hurt. Enjoys when you ask him for ideas! He has lots of them! Mostly…obscure and derelict landscapes though.

Would not be opposed to having his portrait done, but it’s really not his style. He is disciplined enough to sit still but doesn’t see the value in it. Not until the final product is revealed, does he truly understand how important this piece was. You’ve captured his personality in a new light.

The claim of that post—“people have gotten tired of unrelenting grimdark” e.g. actual DC main runs and therefore prefer “slice-of-life fluff [that] also presents a coherent, easy-to-enter, balanced storyline” e.g. WFA—is directionally accurate but its also sort of talking about a Different Group of People than DC Comics Readers.

in particular there is a group of people who have been pretty much totally deracinated from developing or being capable of developing their own opinions on media or humor or life. because of social media and maybe also they r very young. there is a general valence to that part of fandom: the incorrect quotes, the Canva-post-derived politics, the memetic vocab + jokes and like this weird very limited view of redditizedhistory and culture+literature consisteing of the binding of Isaac and twoheadedcalf poem. and so there is just genuinely not the ability to process things that haven’t been run through a filter of accessibility. and WFA, which has BEAUTIFUL art and lots of very sweet moments, IS super accessible and its also sort of been through the preapproved foundfamily neoliberal kitsch machine and come out with a passing grade. but yes it is missing that like elusive Something and it also lacks a seriousness and it isnt the Characters. it’s something else. And its so pretentious to say its for people who don’t have the like stamina ??? for longerform storytelling but yes if you pressed me i would say its a bunch of people, primarily young genz and millennial girls/women, whose critical mental faculties and attention spans have been fried by social media and underexposure to challenging original content

that’s a different new group being lassoed into dc stuff from the previous existing audience. The DC Comics Reader People. i don’t know how much of this to do gender politics with but comics fandom has DEFINITELY gotten MUCH more female in the last 2 decades and there was a distinctive male comic book go-to-the-LCS-and-get-physical-copies and rigorously-autisticslly-fight-about-minutia-of-canon culture. Men also r going to be the one who GENERALLY prefer your fightheavy “”””grimdark””” comics, as opposed to women who doooo generally prefer social relational content. And also women-dominated comics fandom spaces are obviously qualitatively different from men’s fandom spaces. So PART of the reason WFA outsells real DC stuff is market distortion and PART is the DCfan genderdemographic shift that favors content like WFA

I rly hesitate to endorse a lot of Canon dc tumblr’s posts about the fanony WFA-style stuff bc it seems so clear that a the latter is enjoyed primarily by a group of very young people and it also feels like there’s a weird power imbalance intellectually between fanon and canon people. AND I AM A BIG BELIEVER IN LET PEOPLE READ AND ENJOY THE CONTENT THEY WANT and they shouldn’t be shamed for enjoying something as visually sweet and cute as WFA. and a lot of canon tumblr’s rants abt fanon stuff r clearly sort of excessively vicious and insecure attempts to feel superior. although admittedly quietly they r correct but it comes off cruel idk. also i think that BATMAN and superman and to some extent some others ARE indeed very flexible in terms of what is canon and what you have to consume to have consumed The Character and The Story. ive never seen BTAS but as far as im concerned, someone who has only watched BTAS is someone who has the right to do whatever batman stuff they want.

I agree that mainline DC stuff isnt the best right now and i haven’t read WFA so i can’t comment on its quality but i honestly don’t think its the case that “WFA is better written than actual Batman comics, so thats why WFA is more popular” lol

How did you get the idea to make the devilburgers au? Like why the burger/fast food business? And how did you come up with the name?

I’m glad you’re enjoying the art! Haha the origin of the Devilsburger AU happened because while I was having fun drawing the Plantagenet dramas, I had the funny image of all of them in the Burger King drive-thru. It was funny to me because the mundanity of modern American Fast Food and culture makes for a great contrast between royal French-medieval pomp.

Why “Devilsburgers?”

I came up with “Devilsburger” because I initially made it ‘Burger king AU’ because I wanted to move away from using the trademarked Real Company lol (even though I think it’s funnier that way) and also so I could have more freedom to work with it. I used Devil bc of the famous Angevin Devil Ancestress story, and because it sounds cute and provocative… i need to finish designing the logo I came up with for it. Since its an American AU and us Americans love our stupid logos and BORGER it seemed really fitting and a lot of opportunities to have fun with. (I kind of have been thinking of the Devilsburger maybe being a teensy bit fancier than a Burger King though simply so that they can have Cooler Burgers but you can imagine what you like)

I initially was joking around making a play on how the show “The Devil’s Crown” but instead calling it “The Devil’s Burger” but then that kind of just turned into “Devilsburger” which sounds fun and easy to me.

Thematic/ Structural Thoughts

I love the 12th century Angevin Medieval Drama because on one hand it reflects an extremely alien culture and social approach to beliefs and life, but on the other, there’s a lot of elements that feel very familiar. Stories about heterosexual-patriarchal familial discontent, either comedic or dramatic, are very popular and long-lasting for a reason and I think even in the modern day, from the wealthiest to the poorest, that structure is still something that binds us, affecting the expectations and relationships we have between our siblings, parents and romantic partners. So it becomes very easy to reimagine characters loosely into modern family “roles,” since even though the situations and stakes are very different, a lot of the base emotions I think are eternal and map over pretty well. Jealousy, selfishness, loneliness, longing for affection, doing goofy things for attention….these are all eternal things, even if how they get expressed differs over time.

There are some things that DON’T map onto the AU very well at all from the medieval era, which is interesting to poke around with; the main thing being the modern style of nuclear family with smaller number of kids, women having a LOT more rights and mobility (even in toxic or coercive relationships). There is also the system of suzerain/vassalage and homage that I GUESS can fit vaguely into like corporate boss/employee loyalty relationship style stuff, but in a more individualistic modern culture it doesn’t really have the same ring to it. Modern society is not perfectly egalitarian By any means, but there’s an expectation and ideal of it today that people like to either strive for or Pretend Like They’re Striving For definitely did not exist then. (Hence why for me, my Burger Henry is definitely Trying to Look good in a specific way…)

Conclusion

That being said, this is all mostly for fun and sexytimes more than being like, a Deep Cultural Thesis haha. I think that kind of common story tropes and structures make things very fun to play around with because there’s already lots of expectations for how types of characters will act and behave and relate to each other.

I play pretty fast and loose with a lot of things, and in various ways my ideas have kind of moved away from maybe the original Historical Reinterpretation stuff, but in the end I like having a good sense of what I want characters to “feel” like that I really hope comes across well even in the short bits of comics and pics I’ve posted here…

No. 1: Journey Through the Middle Ages

An adventure in which Blitzen takes Hearthstone to the renaissance fair to feed his secretly romantic heart. Blitzen's a demigod, though, so trouble rising is no surprise.

No. 2: The Mystery of the Pencil Bun

A story on Levi being infatuated by Hange, narrated by Mike. The length is inspired by Levi's height.

No. 3: All That I Want

This one is Levihan, too. It delves into Hange's sense of exhaustion after becoming commander during a late night lying on the shore, and explores the possibility of finding rest, but not the way it's generally viewed. It's pretty personal and maybe one of my favorites.

No. 4: Circles Around the Sun

I love this one so, so much. This is my child. It's Levihan in an alternate universe, where seven-year-old Hange meets Levi, who escaped from the Underground at the early age of ten and got himself a job at the flower field of the Zoë household. The thing that Hange doesn't know, though, is that he's in a race against time to gather the money needed to pay for citizenship above ground, before he's found out by the MP.

It is heavy on angst (my drug) and heartbreak, and it's also got scenes where they're both just being kids, which is all very cute and sweet. But at its core, it is angsty and I giggle like a maniac when I'm writing it. All my friends have heard me yapping about it, they all know the plotline, they've heard it at least twice each, so. I'm really pouring my love into it.

No. 5: Somewhere We Can Be Alone

Levihan again, based on this art by @areyoufreeafterclass (hi, sorry for tagging you, I'm crediting). My first SNK fic, but I'm not so sentimental about it, it wasn't quite my style. It's a story revolving, again, around Hange's disposition following their promotion to commander, and explores Levi's feelings about it, too. There are things related to "Love Story" by Taylor Swift and "Romeo and Juliet" by Shakespeare.

Hello hi I noticed ppl just say stuff abt Nagito here and u answer them in such a nice way like u're genuinely interested and its so sweet so I wanna share a THEORY that's been rotting in my head for long and I WANNA SPEAK IT OUT FOR OTHER SDR2 ENJOYERS TO TELL ME ABOUT THEIR OPINION

SO we noticed how Nagito and Sonia look STRANGELY alike like bruh maybe the danganronpa art style has like, same face syndrome or smthn idk but like cmon pls Nagito and Sonia they almost look like twins which I love bcuz they're both honestly so well designed anyway

In my very personal headcanon, they're actually siblings. That's what I think and I'm gonna explain my theory below

So we know abt Nagito's good luck bad luck cycle. And I thought, what if Nagito is the first child of Sonia's parents, and since they live in a castle and in this royal like environment they'd have a sort of tradition running in the family and whenever a new child is born, they'd go to a sort of fortune teller or clairvoyant like those ppl who see in a crystal ball or idk ANYWAY

So they go to their personal clairvoyant guy idk bruh and the person tells them about Nagito's misfoturne cycle. Like he's born with it it's unfair it's sad but yeah poor little Nagito

So Sonia's parents are like omg no this can't be happening we love our son but who knows what his cycle may cause to us?!?! Only God knows!!! What if because of him the castle like burns or something or something very bad happens so they're like yeah we love you bby boy but you gotta go we're so sorry and they like, give him? Idk what correct terms to use excuse me

So they give him to a wealthy family still bcuz like yeah poor Nagito he's born in a royal family then better keep him on a high social statu yknow so yeah they give him to another family and made sure to try and find a first, WEALTHY family and second, with parents who kinda look like him like at least the mother and they did don't ask me how but they did they have like contacts in Japan bruh idk my theory's not very elabored anyway

So little Nagito, who's still like, a few months old like maybe 4 or 5 months bcuz finding a new family takes time gets given away to a wealthy family AND I have another headcanon and its that Nagito's father (adoptive one so) is the founder of a designer/luxury brand so thats why he's rich and he already had contacts w Junko's parents anyway we're getting carried away

So yeah some time later Sonia's parents have Sonia and still have Nagito in mind and they're feeling super guilty and with Sonia looking awfully like him its not helping so yeah I think they'd keep like letters they'd write to Nagito to send him when he'd get older and signed anonymously yknow? Like "we hope you're growing up in good conditions and in a nice environment, we love you Nagito" stuff like that, and It's signed anonymously at the end

And then Sonia and Nagito meet during the game and notice the very visible not only physical but also the similarities in their personality and behavior like idk they're both a little silly its so cute and they're like "lol hold up" and it'd be cute if the other students would (lightheartedly) joke abt these two being siblings WHEN IT'S THE CASE

I went from being like neutrally aware of the Sonic franchise characters' existence to totally obsessed practically overnight with Shadow and Sonadow. Went full speed ahead brainrot on them because of a freaking dream where cartoon (unspecified) Sonic & co accidentally entered the dimension of live action Sonic. Shenanigans ensued, most notably a dreambrain-hatched live action Shadow fighting his cartoon version because of his attitude toward Sonic & co.

A few nights ago I had a random as hell dream about Sonic the hedgehog and I am now here I have watched freaking Sonic Prime on Netflix because the mental images wouldn't leave me alone so I treated it like a weird message from the universe e send Help

My only previous interactions with sonic stuff was some person I followed on twitter for something else posting art of it (mega long time ago), watching the sonic live action movies why I have no idea (super long time ago), and that joke game that went surprisingly hard The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog which I completed even though the minigames to progress got hard AF for me (pretty long time ago) and like even before all that I knew of Sonic from ads, memes, and various posts on social medias. But I didn't fully engage with it.

Side note: the twitter posting was mostly sonadow and I would look it over like uh-huh ok the vibes check out and just keep scrolling like lsdfkjdskl but that is pretty much the main reason I knew Sonic/Shadow existed but at the time I didn't actively seek it out or try to learn more.

Onward...

My brain is so so so weird and the dream was somewhat vivid like watching a movie omg where the live action sonic and pals met the cartoon versions of the characters?? even though I never watched any of the cartoons before??? as such it wasn't a specific series, I just knew it in the dream they were from a generalized cartoon universe

Specifically it was Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles in the movie group, while the cartoon group had Amy and Rouge instead of the other two alongside Sonic, who I only even really knew about because of the April Fool's game. And Shadow was also there in both groups because why not I guess and they (the Shadows) fought each other because the movie one thought the cartoon one was a jerk lmao idk? Yeah my subconscious decided it couldn't wait for Sonic 3 and made up its own version of movie Shadow.

Early in the dream there was also a little kid clone of Sonic who belonged with the cartoon group. There were some cute interactions but in nonsensical dream fashion that character just disappeared later like he was never there lol

…There was some plot about the cartoon group needing to get back to their dimension because Sonic accidentally got them blasted into the movie one somehow... after watching Sonic Prime I'm like my dream was so FREAKISHLY similar to that show's plot, but I SWEAR I knew nothing about the premise of SP before the dream. Although, in the dream they were like... multidimensional travellers doing hero stuff and had met other variants before, just this time it wasn't intentional and it messed something up.

Uh getting off track... (which the dream itself did a lot tbf)

Anyway, what I remember is the movie dimension made the cartoon group look in the more realistic style so at first Shadow thought the actual movie group were the ones from his dimension (Shadow & Amy got separated from Sonic & Rouge) and was rude to them because he was so ticked off blaming Sonic for being a dumbass and yelling at Tails for not preventing whatever happened or something, so actual movie Shadow appeared like. don't talk to my friends that way asshole and beat the absolute shit out of him. There was an explanation Tails gave that the movie Shadow was more powerful for some reason I don't remember and Amy told cartoon Shadow to stop trying to beat him. But yeah bro was so pissed movie Sonic had to step in and physically stop him because he wouldn't listen to and/or overpowered anyone else. He reminded Shadow that the other Shadow was still him, in a sense.

Cartoon Sonic and Rouge appeared and Sonic started bickering with cartoon Shadow. but the movie versions were best friends so they were watching them like wtf is wrong with y'all. Movie Shadow got fed up quickly and punched cartoon Shadow again and stood protectively in front of both Sonic versions bristling and wouldn't take his eyes off his counterpart. Cartoon Shadow was so goddamn confused by Shadow's protectiveness and asked how Sonic had made movie Shadow his loyal bodyguard (derogatory) Amy and Rouge like explained the backstory to the movie crew, which is fuzzy to me but it was something along the lines of, Shadow had been brainwashed to rival Sonic, tricked to think that Sonic was evil (unbeknownst to that Sonic who in his pov had this random edgy hedgehog start attacking him out of nowhere during a mission) and they had a lot of intense fighting before Shadow found out the truth. But the two of them never quite got over the misunderstanding. Listen I didn't know Shadow's backstory, literally none of it, but I have read the wiki since ok

Meanwhile movie Shadow, in the dream, was made and raised in a lab and similarly believed he was made as Sonic's rival/equal. Behind the scenes some government thing or whatever were afraid of Sonic's power and wanted a backup plan. But some evil guy stole and unleashed Shadow. At first it was basically just a duel, Shadow admired Sonic, but the evil guy had put a chip in his head that when activated made him try to kill Sonic. Eventually he was subdued and the chip deactivated- and despite everything Sonic insisted Shadow come with him to his home and the rest was history. This unfolded in like flashback style.

There was a funny part where Shadow questioned Sonic's home like "What kind of base of operations is this?" In a very unimpressed tone. Sonic said sarcastically "Oh, sorry if you were expecting my own Fortress of Solitude." And I guess Shadow was allowed to watch tv because he got the reference and shot back "Does that make me Lois Lane?" Didn't make a whole lot of sense sdlfkjds but movie Shadow delivered this line very confidently and flirtatious and just walked away leaving Sonic shocked LOL

And then later Shadow complained that the government people would always rewind and loop the villainy parts and he never got to see if Lois and Clark kissed (It's been too long since I watched any Superman movies so I couldn't tell you if this makes sense) and Knuckles teased him for being a romantic, and then the whole team binge watched every Superman movie.

In the "present" at some point movie Sonic and Shadow pulled their alternate versions aside and like told them off for being mean to each other lmao cartoon Sonic was kinda like uwu I didn't know Shadow had feelings he's like a lone wolf and like was surprised by his counterpart's vehemence. Movie Sonic told cartoon Sonic that Shadow can be a great friend if you give him a chance. I don't remember the Shadowses convo much but it was a lot more chill despite the fighting before (though still prickly) because Shadow's reasons were more valid and it was more of a pep talk from movie Shadow that if he opened up more it might give the others around him more opportunity to know and accept him.

I remember there was this one specific heavy emotional line in the dream that stuck with me when I woke up said by cartoon Shadow about Sonic, "He's my best friend but I'm obviously not his" DFKLJDSKJ

Additional small detail that movie Sonic and Shadow had known each other for over 2 years during dream events. And they were quite close and in sync. But still bantery

My brain basically conjured a LITERAL FANFICTION in my sleep and I have been thinking about it a lot What's hilarious is I knew next to fuck all about these characters my brain pulled the plot points of this dream out of its ass

Typed out, this dream probably sounds a lot longer than it was... the "scenes" just felt oddly detailed for how mashed together and quick passing they were.

But yeah I kept thinking about the dream and like daydreaming more scenes and it somehow turned even more into Sonadow (like, I imagined Cartoon Sonic & Shadow finding out in a very abrupt way that the movie versions were an item. <- to my delight I did find a fic with a premise very similar to this just not movie universe related. Also played with the idea of Sonic and/or Shadow accidentally kissing the wrong counterpart in their excitement at being reunited which Awakened Some Things for the receiver of the unexpected passion😂 )

The dream kinda acted as a base that inspired daydreams to spiral out from my brain without permission but I just... mentally jumped into it because ships sometimes grab you like that.

And Sonic Prime made my sprouting interest worse, basically fuel to the fire, so now I am obsessed with them... like what a fucking way to get into a ship

Robooty Reviews: Yandere Kanojo (7/10)

My first manga I ever laid mein precious little eyes upon... hoo boy is this one nostalgic! You can definately see how it influenced my artstyle lol. It's incredibly charming imo and i fuckin love it. anyways this manga is about a yankee girl reina and her new nerdy boyfriend tanaka (who is most definately not a yankee) and them having slice of life swag together. It's all done in a 4-koma style but is incredibly charming with a delightful cast of fun characters and quite a few interesting dynamics + jokes! Just be careful, there two versions of this story, the print and online one and they contain the same plot but have different comics each. I recommend reading both since its kinda like getting more in between stories (except when it comes to the end with the more plot heavy stuff then they diverge a bit)

My art doesnt show it lately, but my favorite is raph, he is perfect in many ways and also is relatable as an elder sibling trying to take responsibility for a role he isnt fit for, a protector but not leader, he puts his familys needs first, never hesitating to jump in the way of danger, he is a huge teddy bear sweetheart, but also has his fair share of sibling-cain-instinct prick moments that are so amusing and sweet when interacting with the others, he is my favorite, so everything about him is considered a fav, even his flaws

Donnie! Second favorite, hes the funniest, despite his doubt in his understanding of emotions, he loves more than he shows it, just differently, and i love how its presented in the show, especially the take on his design and physical aid without reducing him to being just "the weakest but smartest"

Mikey! The youngest of the bunch, i love the play on being the most empathetic but tough love kindof individual, not to mention his firey spirit, hes charming, cute, fun as most of the tmnt iterations' mikeys are, but he also has an incredibly strong spirit and optimistic take on life that it often leads him (and his brothers) to awkward situations, but eventually works out in the end with the help of his family that cares for him

And finally, leo, i am not gonna lie when i say i had a hard time liking him at first, not because hes unlikeable, in fact i understood his character, and loved his jokes, dramatic and eccentric fighting style, especially when they had him written out to not be the leader, it left him alot of space to explore his character as a support to raphs leadership. The reason why i didnt immediately fall for his character was because he was written out to be the fandom fave (which isnt bad per say, but you can get to that point where it gets repetitive and overrated), hes funny, relatable, annoying but in a humorous way, which made me want to enjoy everyone else's character arcs first before digging into his, especially after seeing the movie

As for my appearance, I have dyed bright pink hair that goes a little past my shoulders, its naturally wavy but sometimes its straight depending on how it dries. I’m 5’7” and I have green eyes, I’m pretty pale and I have freckles but you can see them much better in the sun. I think I’d say I’m more pear-shaped overall, and a slightly more sharp face/jaw. I tend to prefer more cute, pastel and/or feminine styles, but I also like to mix things up sometimes and try different styles like a more grungy all black look or just a cozy, relaxed one lol. When I’m at home, though, I’m usually quick to change out of the nicer outfits and just relax in some sweatpants/shorts and an oversized t-shirt :> I intend to get tattoos somewhere in the near future hopefully, as well as a tongue piercing someday! 

For my personality, I’m definitely an introvert. I love spending time with the people I care about, but I also need at least a little bit of alone time each day just to decompress and relax. I have pretty bad anxiety, so I tend to overthink and I’m frequently stressed even if I don’t show it, and even about small things that most people don’t even think about lol. I’m also super awkward and shy especially when I first meet people especially since I sometimes struggle to read social situations, I’m really not the type to initiate conversations much at first and I even struggle with initiating physical affection with someone I’m close to. I like making lame jokes when I’m comfortable with people, and once I feel safe and close with someone I tend to ramble quite a lot about my interests or just topics I’ve dived into recently. I love making it a conversation and going back and forth whether the topic is super important or super dumb just because it’s fun for me to get to share my perspective and hear others’ perspectives too, and I tend to think I’m a pretty good listener as well! :) I try my best to generally be a friendly, kind person and look out for others even when it makes me nervous to confront things, and I tend to avoid conflict unless someone I love is being hurt. My worst trait is probably my procrastination so that’s something I’d love to get better at, in all honesty. I’m currently in college and studying to hopefully become an English/Language Arts professor one day, though I’ve been considering switching to sociology and being a sociology professor instead! I really really do love learning about things I find interesting/important and getting to share what I learn with people :] I love starting big, exciting creative projects in all kinds of forms, though I only end up finishing them about 50% of the time lol, and I usually enjoy staying up somewhat late as I just like being up and being able to use my time how I like, without my time being dictated as much as it usually is when I’m awake

Some qualities I tend to like in a partner is confidence/willingness to initiate since it’s something I struggle with, someone who’s patient and willing to listen when I’m having a hard time (and I’m more than happy to do the same in return) and someone honest and loyal. Since I’m very anxious, I’d prefer someone who’s open with their affection with me! They don’t have to make it super obvious in public or anything, just someone who’s open and not ashamed of their partner :) And someone who’s willing to kill/get rid of bugs! I HATE bugs, especially spiders and any kind of worm :< I don’t think I’d do well with someone who struggles with showing affection at all, I feel like two anxious attachment styles may be difficult to work with in a relationship and if someone is more avoidant or doesn’t like to show much affection in any way, I’d most likely get overwhelmed and insecure and it probably wouldn’t work out well :/ My giving love languages are mostly physical touch and gifts (I love getting to see people’s reactions when I get them gifts I know they’ll love, and even if I don’t have a ton of money I’m willing to spend a lot of it just to make my loved ones happy), and my receiving love languages are probably physical touch, words of affirmation and acts of service.

Some date activities I think I’d enjoy would be like a picnic or a trip to a theme park or fair, as well as pretty much any cozy inside date :) I like the thought of watching a movie at home too, but not really at a movie theater as it’s hard to really spend much time with your date or interact with them that way and I like being able to discuss movies with my partner as we watch them (after pausing to make sure we don’t miss anything of course lol)

As for my interests and hobbies, I’m a big fan of horror or mystery movies/media in general. (My favorite movie, for example, is Knives Out) I really enjoy reading as well, even though it’s much harder for me to find time to read and motivation to pick up a book lately lol, and I really enjoy writing as well! I enjoy anime/manga (my favorite anime is Yuri on Ice, if you’ve heard of it) and even though video games aren’t generally my favorite, there are a few kinds I really enjoy like visual novels (especially spooky ones), games like Danganronpa or FNAF or “cozy games” like Minecraft or Stardew Valley! I also play the cello (though I haven’t practiced as much in this past year) and I work backstage as the stage manager in most of my school’s theater productions. I really enjoy all kinds of music, I listen to anything from k-pop to musicals to “emo” music to just regular pop lol.  I do bullet journaling as well, and I really enjoy collecting things even when I lose interest! (As in, even after I stop fixating on an interest so much and switch over to a new one, I never get rid of the merch because it still brings me joy and reminds me of how important that thing was to me :> ) I like anything that makes me emotional, whether it’s soul-crushingly sad or inspiring and heartwarming, I just like when media can make me feel things, and I’m a big crier since I tend to get emotional pretty easily :]

Some things that stood out to me: The fact that you are a huge fan of horror and mystery movies. Levi likes to dip his toes into every genre. If the movie/manga/anime/book is well written, he'd eat up whatever you'd recommend. Speaking of manga and anime, I think you and he'd like to share each others' thoughts on each other favorite anime without judgement and he definitely wouldn't feel ashamed around you. You seem like a pretty chill and relaxed person, which I think he would appreciate as he does have a tendency to overthink sometimes.

Also, as you're such a good listener, be prepared for LOTS of infodumping. His love languages include telling you all about the things he likes.

There are gonna be some rough patches like your anxious attachment style. Levi would be more than happy to help you tame your own demons, but you really gotta communicate what's on your mind if you feel insecure for whatever reason. As a self proclaimed connoisseur of connoisseur-ing- I have decided that this holiday be best celebrated by harshly and brutally judging the birthday man himself! So, here is the *definitive* list of ratings of ma.tt blog posts with brief explanations. enjoy!

We can go right ahead and start with Matt’s “Birthday Gift” blog post announcement itself. This post … I have mixed feelings about. It starts incredibly strong- two banger lines one after the other, the second being, ‘WHAT DO YOU GET THE GUY WHO HAS EVERYTHING?’ Like that’s a serve! But then as the reader continues... it’s just not that saucy… to no real fault of its own other than the simple nature of any 'announcement' type blog post. So I’m gonna rate this blog post 2/5. It’s fine. Low stakes. Got the job done. ⭐️⭐️

"Books 2020-2023." I like this post. I daresay I do. It’s short, it’s directly to the point. Matt admits his failings, lagging the last few years. It’s vulnerable. It’s two sentences. Right to business. Then we get the chronological list with links. No fluff. No “reviews.” Some bolded for emphasis. clean. smart. simple. easy. breezy. beautiful. covergirl. My only note on this post is I do think I would’ve appreciated some other notation for genre. ie. an asterisk for fiction, you know what I mean. But I respect this post. 4/5 stars. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

"What’s in My Bag, 2023." This was the blog post that first got me invested in this whole Matt blogging thing. I didn’t really know people blogged to be honest. In the day of super long captions on ig, twitter etc, … the blog … seemed like a fantastical art piece of legend. Not to repeat myself too much w/r/t the “Books 2020-2023” blog review, it’s clear that Matt’s style shines in list format. Something that spoke to me in this piece was the honesty- I genuinely believed that this all was in this mfrs bag. Like yeah. He’s got a heavy bag. Probably has back problems. This bag is simply too full. I got lost in the sauce a little with this post- scrolling down this journey of things I just never will get and never will seriously consider getting, but for one fleeting moment, imagining a life with. Fantasizing about having 3 phones with each associated slew of accessories. There were a few jokes that made me laugh out loud in this one. 4/5 only note is I think could have been minorly edited for brevity//a little slicing could make the whole piece more impactful. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

"Sunbird Security Isn’t Nothing." This is a very strong post. Explains simply for plebs like myself- educational for all levels of understanding- without lacking the classic Matt charm. Good use of the word “bamboozled.” Good use of directly weaponizing the reader @ apple. My only roast of this post is dude, get off Tim Cook’s dick. 4/5. good post. That last star I reserve for being truly jazzed so no hard feelings. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

"Thirty-Nine." Closing off this blog with Matt’s 2023 edition of what started all this. Gonna roast the hell out of this one because, it’s the last one and also, because I can! Also, Matt asked for a blog so I’m gonna blog! This post, despite its intended personality, felt impersonal to me. Now that I’ve deeply immersed myself in Matt’s blogging history, I feel like I’ve come to expect a certain candor and closeness in his language and phasing that I’m not quite getting in this freshly 39 year old Matt. Good ref to the Foundation series. Way to flex the milli donation. Big baller shit. But wait I’m scrolling down… “All birthday posts:….” Oh my….. ok so I guess for Matt’s birthday next year I’m gonna have to review every one of his birthday posts. Or maybe I’ll do that for my birthday just for fun. 4/5, added a star because of the links to other years and I’m impressed with the consistency that Matt’s been blogging. No need to apologize. As you mentioned, PN1 obviously ranks high for me since it has the campers. Aside from them, I just really like the atmosphere and art style of the first game. Drawing the characters from PN1 is like CRACK to me. The shapes just fit nicely and it just sort of "clicks" in my brain. Some mechanics of that game do feel dated and clunky when you play it or even watch someone else play. You can just TELL it's old lol. It's very much a product of its time (writing, graphics, and mechanics) and that can make it a hard sell to some people. I find it charming and quaint in a way. I also just love old games and their quirks.

I don't have a strong opinion about RoR. Me and my sister had to watch a playthough since we don't have a VR. It has some funny moments and it led to some inside jokes between us. It's alright.

I like PN2. It's an appealing looking game, it has a good story, but the character designs in this one don't "click" with me in the same way as PN1's designs do (except for the Aquatos, but that's probably because they appeared in PN1 in the memory vault so they worked off of that.) I'm not nostalgia blind either since I only learned about these games from my sister in Nov or Dec 2022, and got into it myself in Jan 2023.

My criticisms towards that game are only from a superficial design perspective. I don't mind Raz being cute-ified. I like janky bug-eyed PN1 Raz AND cutesy puppy-eyed PN2 Raz. Lili looks just fine to me. Oleander looks fine. Milla and Sasha look a bit… off to me. Sasha is too smooth. I know that's what happens when you gain more polygons, so I can't really complain about that too much. Raz's personality change used to bug me but now I don't really care. Raz is Raz.

The interns bore me. I don't hate them or like them. They're just there. Sorry intern fans. Whispering Rock campers they are not. Maybe some day I'll come around to them. Maybe the interns would have benefitted from some sort of modern day Campster to give them a bit more depth. They're just kind of… there. I don't feel like them rolling up at the end is deserved either. It feels like it should be epic and impactful, but it really isn't for me. Their designs all kind of blend together in my mind as well. The campers all have the same three or so bodies with just different heads slapped on, but they still each feel unique and easily distinguishable by design and personality. That's also probably just the HEAVY BIAS lol.

I do not have strong opinions on the psychic seven aside from Ford and Lucy. They're alright.

I do like the Aquatos. I wish we got more of them. They used to take up space in my brain before the campers moved in.

BUT DESPITE ALL OF THAT, I still like PN2. I find it hard to compare it to PN1 because they're so different. It's kind of like comparing apples and oranges to me. I know some people would love a PN3, but I don't really even think there NEEDS to be a PN3 since PN2 wrapped it up nicely.

Head Start at Birth - Chapters 1-10

This one popped up on MAL suddenly because the JP title begins with a "0." Always excited to read/watch something new for a change, but this looks kinda bottom tier. Not only is it an incredibly generic plot, but its adaptation is a short episodes anime 😬

ALSO, this manga is being sold in the west as chapters and in the Webtoon style? I'm old school and kinda hate this. Why can't I just buy volumes?

Ch. 1

Oof this is so generic. I'm trying to give it a chance but the cliches are too much. The art is...fine but not very memorable. At least it's in color.

The mom got over her 3 year old making land management recommendations waaaay too quickly.

I feel like they vaguely implied that the mom is an evil capitalist (monarchist?) since she won't give people tax relief. That could be something interesting to explore...

They introduce 3 age appropriate boys and then she immediately falls for the older guy. I get that she has the mind of a 30 year old but it's still weird. They'll probably go the "he waits until she's older" route. Whatever -_-

I was pleased that Lilia's parents stayed on her side as she was slightly rude to the royals. Their loyalties are in the right place at least.

Why does every shoujo isekai gotta be fixated on otome games and villainesses? It's honestly so bizarre how keyword obsessed media is these days...

Ch. 3

Yeah so, this is a romance isekai where the MC is 5 and the love interest is 15 🙄 I get that it's kinda based on the olden days when engagements like that were normal due to political marriages, but still. We don't really need to be romanticizing this stuff nowadays, right? Especially when it's a fantasy world where everything's made up and the points don't matter. Oh well.

This situation reminds me of The Familiar of Zero when Louise had a much older fiancé. Although in that series I think it was kind of portrayed as a little creepy/unsettling. Wow never thought I'd be praising The Familiar of Zero as a more progressive option 😅

I do appreciate that the dad (Guy) is ride or die for his daughter, but the joke about him thinking she'd been raped was a little tasteless.

We have yet to see what the plot of this series is going to be. Is it going to follow the romance angle mainly or is it going to be more about Lilia's personal development?

Ch. 4

Lilia's mom looks a lot like she stepped out of Umineko no Naku Koro ni. It's probably just the cravat lol.

We learn about Elrich's tragic backstory (his parents were executed for treason). Unfortunately, it didn't really make him a more interesting character. I had hoped he'd have at least some sort of reaction to the engagement but he's pretty much just "bland perfect husbando" so far.

I know this said in the tags but also…I have too many to really count so *sighs* I’ll put my whole rec list here since many of the manhua I’ve added are ones I adore ahaha:

The biggest stars though…:

When it comes to more general stories and ones that have gotten donghua (animated) adaptations, I’m obsessed with White Cat Legend, Beryl and Sapphire, Fei Ren Zai, Lanxi Zhen, and All Saints Street.

White Cat Legend is set in the Tang dynasty and is all about mystery and intrigue, with the donghua adaptation showcasing a lot of incredible action scenes. We also have a main character who is…a literal anthropomorphic white cat due to ~mysterious reasons~ from his past, and it’s a really intriguing one to slowly unlock.

(^ Also all of these characters in the above gif are great)

Beryl and Sapphire is really fun because it’s only drawn in stick figures—even though the characters do have canonical human designs—and can tell a different story every chapter. Some are overarching arcs the author cuts back to, like the Robo-Beryl and Demon King Beryl arcs, but many are just one-off stories. The donghua handles this by having the first season treat the main characters, the titular Beryl and Sapphire, as actors, which you can see in the catchy OP:

It’s a really unique yet adorable experience!

Fei Ren Zai is more slice-of-life, goofy fun, with the main cast being legendary and mythical Chinese creatures (yaoguai and yaojing) and figures (such as gods and goddesses). The twist here is that they now all live—and have to navigate—the modern day lol.

This one updates a lot and thus has many, many good jokes, and even educates people on Chinese mythology a bit through its comedy—you can thank Baize for that, the fourth wall-breaking bookworm who also hosts a trivia segment after many episodes of the donghua.

The entire cast is really charming for this one, and it has some of the best merch out there!

Similarly, All Saints Street is the exact same premise, except featuring Western monsters. It’s also Fei Ren Zai’s sister series, and I’ll always have a soft spot for it and Lanxi Zhen since I was a contributor to my friends’ efforts to translate these manhua.

(^ Lanxi Zhen is also the prequel manhua to the donghua, The Legend of Luo Xiaohei, and its prequel film, The Legend of Hei, which became popular a few years ago due to its gorgeous animation. I’ve connected it here to All Saints Street since both are series I’ve helped translate, but also because the director of Luo Xiaohei, MTJJ, also directed the animated adaptation of All Saints Street.)

Now for shoujo—or in this case, shaonü—manhua, I adored both Once More and Protect My Star due to the maturity they showed behind their themes. I also really like Hidden Love since it’s both cute and because the cdrama adaptation was so so good, which is actually why I intend to read some more shaonü manhua soon…

What I like about them is that we don't always get flat female and male leads or the more stereotypical "I'm a goofy nice girl who falls for the bad boy/boy who's kind of a troublemaker/mean to me" character tropes (which there's nothing wrong with! I myself loved many shoujo manhua with such character settings as a kid).

The male leads for these ones are really goddamn charming and the romance is all so soft. They also have very nice art styles that disprove many manhwa readers' assumptions that Chinese manhua always look "bad" or are "poorly written."

To quickly summarize some selling points: Protect My Star starts off as a goofy "fan ends up with idol" story that on the surface looks like pure wish fulfillment—especially since some readers found issue with the way the main character treated the idol of the story—but it's actually a great set-up for growth that really pays off. This applies to the side ship as well, who have their fair share of issues, but also reach a point that many fans appreciate, and I can't help but also cheer on the male lead of this side couple ship, since he's a classic puppy dog character ahaha. But yeah, all the relationships and characters develop and grow in ways that are pretty fulfilling in this manhua, to the point you can really feel as if the characters have grown up by the end of it!

Hidden Love and its sister series, First Frost (or brother series, since the male lead there is the brother of the main character of Hidden Love), are also just really lovely. Hidden Love is a schoolgirl's romance: a girl falls for her older brother's friend and even though she does miss him due to him only seeing her as a little sister, an unexpected reunion when she's in university sets off a romance that took the world by storm when the cdrama adaptation released (Duan Jiaxu, the man that you are...). It's just really sweet and does have a very beautiful—and cute!—romance, where the male lead actually finds healing in the female lead.

Then for Once More, there's a maturity to it that feels pretty new. Like we do get misunderstandings and the characters do make stupid mistakes, but they tackle the issues and communicate the way adults should. It also explores a lot in terms of what makes a romantic relationship and how backgrounds—and trauma—can create boundaries that couples have to navigate together. The male lead is also really compelling in this one! He's soft and gentle but playful and occasionally firm, and the way he pursues the female lead is really refreshing. Plus the side ship is cute too!!

There’s quite a few shaonü manhua in my donghua/manhua recommendations list and I have a feeling I’ll like quite a few of them, such as My OTP Is So Sweet That I Want to Fall in Love and My Star and I, aka My Lucky Star. Even without having read them yet, I'm already really charmed by their art styles, which has a watercolour-y feel to it that I've picked up is pretty popular in these shaonü manhua! I've also checked them out a little bit and like the three shaonü manhua I described above, My OTP Is So Sweet and My Lucky Star also seem to contain pretty compelling stories with gentle romances and character development, with the male leads all being quite charming.

As for a shaonü manhua I really like with a donghua adaptation, the body-swap story, No Doubt in Us, is a great one, and its writer is even behind the popular danmei (boys' love) novel (which also has a manhua), The Wife Is First.

Now if we were to switch gears to the ones that I go really feral over... They're admittedly danmei/boys' love manhua ahaha.

The biggest contenders and the ones that you could actually make a case are my "true" favourites are I Ship My Rival x Me and Kiss the Abyss. The former is based on an equally fun novel with an equally hilarious audio drama adaptation, and the latter is an original manhua but has a really great vomic adaptation.

If I were to explain the charm of the above two...

Well, the main characters for I Ship My Rival x Me are just refreshingly adorable, and the entire thing is pretty soft but also just very funny. Wei Yanzi's brain circuit makes a frightening amount of sense despite its zaniness, and I don't think anyone can fault him for falling for the charming puppy and greenest of green flags to ever green flag, Gu Yiliang. They also both make some really stupid assumptions that lead to some really stupid but actually really harmless—and thus hilarious—misunderstandings. 😂

This manhua literally fulfills the age-old imagination of fans who end up shipping their favourite actors together—as the entire reason Wei Yanzi and Gu Yiliang get together is because Wei Yanzi starts shipping him and Gu Yiliang too...except he's only shipping it ~in theory~ because their fans (who call them the Niangzi ship) are the only ones who don't view them as rivals! Wei Yanzi totally doesn't actually have a thing for Gu Yiliang himself...right?

(Spoiler alert: he totally ends up having a thing for Gu Yiliang 🤣)

It's just a super feel-good and squee-worthy story, and the manhua's art style and pacing are all so *chef's kiss*. The manhua has an adorableness to it that's perfect for this story.

In contrast, Kiss the Abyss is darker, as our main character—and my personal gender envy icon—Wang Zixin (aka Wangzi or "Prince") transmigrates into the video game he made after being killed by its main character come to life...and the video game features a death game (think Squid Games) that its players must survive. In comes the very main character that killed Wangzi for putting him through such hell, known as Abyss, an experiment of super-strength that has only known a lab his whole life, except now he's a teenager who hasn't yet darkened to the point of no return or suffered the very death game that made him snap.

So thanks to a pretty absent System—a popular trope in Chinese transmigration stories that control things like a video game and hands the transmigrator protagonist tasks—Wangzi has to protect Abyss and make sure he doesn't suffer the same dark fate as the original Abyss.

I love this one because of the main characters: Wangzi is very smart and level-headed—but with both charm and humour—and a complete bi icon. He's suffered a lot himself in his past, but he picked himself up due to reasons we find out as the story goes on, and he's just a really interesting main character to follow. Then Abyss is very much so the puppy/wolf trope, which I fell in love with after reading both The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System and Erha. It's hard not to love Abyss when he has much of the same charm as Luo Binghe and Mo Ran from those other stories I mentioned.

Also, the author of Kiss the Abyss is behind some other manhua I really enjoy, such as the popular I Have to Be a Great Villain and the more underrated but still quite "darkly" interesting I'm Sick!

Don't Say You Love Me is also another really cute one that I think I can argue as a favourite of mine—to the point I myself even translated some of the original Chinese chapters (for example, here), along with a few clips of its vomic adaptation (for example, here and here), to English lol. It's a time travel story (also called transmigration in Chinese even though the character doesn't transmigrate into another world/story): Lin Yutong is confessed to by his best friend, Qin Weiyun, and in a drunken panic, he runs away...only for Qin Weiyun to be hit by a car while chasing him.

This triggers his transmigration/time travel back to before they graduated high school, where he hasn't met the reticent but polite Qin Weiyun yet. They still meet, except now Lin Yutong has to navigate all these other things: living this period of his life over, his feelings for Qin Weiyun—and Qin Weiyun's potential future (romantic) feelings for him, the future accident, and so on.

Similarly, the aloof and distant Qin Weiyun is kind of on-guard with this Lin Yutong, who acts weirdly nice and open to and interested in him, and who seems to know him bizarrely well. To someone that prefers to keep everyone at a distance, Qin Weiyun finds Lin Yutong suspicious in multiple ways.

Still, this is a very cute slice-of-life story with a pretty refreshing romance between its leads, since Lin Yutong isn't your typical boys' love protagonist. He's silly and goofy and a bit childish, but it's exactly that sunny charm that draws in the seemingly cold Qin Weiyun.

Plus the author's other manhua, Beware of the Dream Demon, is also quite popular!

Pixiu's Eatery, No Way Out aka Pixiu's Bistro is also great! It's like Fei Ren Zai since it has mythical Chinese yao and gods in the modern day, but this one's a danmei. Our titular Pixiu ends up taking in a male ghost named Wen Xi who doesn't have many memories due to reasons™️, and a hilarious yet heartfelt romance ensues. I've also loved this one enough to translate a clip from its vomic as well here, since this scene in particular always gets me cackling when we reach it lol.

It's a very "we kind of need each other but we start off very unwilling" relationship that snowballs into a "we spend so much time together and help each other so much that no wonder we fell in love with each other" ship. And even if you know nothing about Chinese mythology, a lot of the jokes work anyway. 😆

But like Fei Ren Zai, this manhua similarly plays with the identities of these Chinese mythical beings and how they'd be affected—comedically—by the modern world. Like Pixiu, a creature of fortune, is now a penny-pinching, grumpy restaurant owner who bears a severe grudge against the mysterious Taotie.

I don't think I can really do justice for this one if I were to keep trying to describe it, since comedy often has to be experienced for yourself. But if you like danmei and/or Fei Ren Zai and/or Chinese mythology and/or comedy, then this is the story for you!

A few others that I really like that float between being known and unknown are How'd I Get a Heroine's Script and Wo Jia Dashixiong Naozi You Keng, both transmigration stories.

For the former, I like it for its cute, soft nature—and the way it plays with transmigration clichés. Specifically, we first meet Chao Yi, who transmigrates into a palace and is told he needs to get close to the polite and smiley but actually very cold seventh prince, Gu Yunheng...which means he does plenty of silly, "embarrassing" romantic gestures to try and get close to the reticent seventh prince.

Except throw in a few twists (there's one I really like that I won't spoil, but I think it's a "you'll know it when you see it" twist) and a mystery and some court intrigue, and you get a story that ends up a pretty endearing romance and interesting, if not understated, palace drama.

This one's also another one with a vomic adaptation too~

Then for Wo Jia Dashixiong Naozi You Keng, aka My Dashixiong Has a Hole in His Brain, it's a hilarious transmigration story that also involves reincarnation...which makes it like SVSSS and Erha kind of mashed together.

I wrote the Pinyin version of its name, which probably looks daunting for a non-Chinese speaker. And this is because its poor English name has been through a lot. For example, the donghua's official English title is just What's Wrong With My Big Brother, which I feel like misses a lot of the goofy and, of course, cultural charm of the original.

It's a little harder to recommend I think, since it relies on you being familiar with both wuxia (Chinese martial arts fantasy) and transmigration tropes: for example, our protagonist, Dongfang Xianyun, thinks he's just an NPC, so he lazes around for the first bit of the story while bothering who he thinks is the protagonist: Yin Feixing.

What he doesn't know though is that Yin Feixing is actually living this life over, having reincarnated. Because his last life ended so poorly—he became a demonic sect cultivator and was condemned by society, including his upright and stoic dashixiong (elder martial sect brother), Dongfang Xianyun... So in this life, he intends to push every bad thing that happened to him onto Dongfang Xianyun, including becoming a demonic sect cultivator.

What he can't foresee is that his dashixiong has changed a lot. Gone is the calm and collected dashixiong he came to see as a hypocrite in his last life. Now he's...weirdly goofy and shirks responsibility at every turn. At first, Yin Feixing is constantly yelling and chasing his dashixiong (classic tsundere behaviour lol), but his dashixiong's newfound warmth is weirdly off-putting in the sense that it lowers his guard...but also means that no matter what Yin Feixing throws his way, Dongfang Xianyun now seems capable of changing the narrative?

It's...admittedly a manhua that has a lot of fanservice, as it's not explicitly a boys' love/danmei story, yet it is very, very queer-coded. The original manhua also features costume designs with quite a bit of skin, and it's been going on forever.

I'd recommend it for those who a) like wuxia and transmigration already, b) who can enjoy and tolerate bl tropes and tones and fanservice, and c) who like the premise I just described above.

If you are intrigued but can't necessarily handle a manhua that's hundreds of chapters and not even fully translated and has those bl/fanservice overtones, I'd recommend the donghua adaptation instead! It's 3 seasons so far, and it tones down a lot of the fanservice, but still retains much of the other things, including its hilarity and its charm.

Oh, and the donghua's seasonal titles are really clever and cute, since it presents the series' narrative arc within itself!:

Season 1: Wo Jia Dashixiong Naozi You Keng: My Dashixiong Has a Hole in His Brain (the title of the original manhua and its title overall)

Season 2: Wo Jia Dashixiong Shi Ge Fanpai: My Dashixiong Is a Villain

Season 3: Wo Jia Dashixiong You Dian Kaopu: My Dashixiong Is a Bit Reliable

Final one I wanted to showcase is The Silver Wolf...because it's really fucking cute and I really like it but no one knows about it!!

If I had to promote it in a way that generated interest, I'd liken it to The Legend of Luo Xiaohei—which I have before—since both feature a young girl with pink hair taking in a boy who's actually a yaojing. Both boys thus have animal features (cat and wolf ears!) and both girls also have mysterious "older brothers" who are related to the world of magic somehow.

Specifically, for those who like The Legend of Luo Xiaohei and actually ship said pink-haired girl with said-yao boy, while Luo Xiaohei doesn't exactly make that romance canon, The Silver Wolf does!

Its romance is admittedly very subtle, and this can be counted as a great series for younger audiences as well, but I still really like and recommend it due to its very nice art style, its dynamic action scenes, its compelling writing for the characters and plot and relationships, and because it's as cute as it is interesting~

I also didn't mention a lot of girls' love aka baihe manhua since I admittedly haven't read as many of them, although Straight Girl Trap and Baili Jin Among Mortals and Tamen de Gushi are really cute. I've been meaning to check out more as well! For example, the dark I'm More Dangerous Than You and the popular Miss Forensics are both series that have gotten my attention. I've also noticed quite a few baihe manhua take place in the entertainment circle genre, which is a genre I like!

And man, I could just keep going and going and going...

Like right now I'm really enjoying a lot of manhua, including See You My King; Blemishing the Contaminated; The Film Emperor, He Insisted on Being My Patron; The Trapped Beast; It’s Not That I Want to Wear Women’s Clothing; Salt Friend; and many others. Quite a few of these are ones that are actually adaptations of existing danmei novels, such as the mental health-aware Jie Yao, the police story Poyun and its sequel, Tunhai, the beautiful Little Mushroom, and the thrilling Bing Xing Xia Deng (commonly known as Inferior By Nature but also The Selfish Gene).

For Bing Xing Xia Deng, the manhua is how I started it, but I'll admit if you want to experience it best, the original novel and its amazing audio drama adaptation on MaoEr FM are the ways to go—I'm kind of obsessed; especially since the audio drama adaptation adds a few short scenes from the male lead's POV that don't exist in the original novel, which is both first person POV and stars an unreliable narrator.

But I'm getting off-track. I will say though that Little Mushroom's manhua is actually a great way to experience its story (so far, at least!), if only for its super, super stunning artwork. Of course I'd still recommend the original novel (and it also has an audio drama adaptation!), which its fans also adore to death, but we almost lost the Little Mushroom manhua artist due to them originally wanting to give up after dealing with haters, but thankfully they stayed on and we now still get to enjoy it as is!

From least to fav here are my overall thoughts:

Urusei Yatsura (2022)

I am just not the target audience for this. This is probably a nostalgia ridden show that people who watched the original will love and enjoy but I am not that person and with the two eps I watched I had enough. The jokes were not funny to me all characters were annoying and yeah the animation is nice but I will not put myself through something I will not enjoy for it tbh. Watch it if you liked the original ig

Tonikaku Kawaii: SeifukU

I dislike tonikaku with a passion it gives go girl give us nothing to the negative 20 no flavor no taste still the same shiz as the show so yeah. Watch it if you liked the series lmao its more of the same

Shinobi no Ittoki

I guess…… Its really kinda bland and I can’t pinpoint why. The concept is interesting but it just doesn’t hold up in its execution and I dont care for it run sorry do better I guess

Fumetsu no Anata e 2nd Season

I try so hard to care, SO hard. Since season 1 I have found this show to be kinda…. All over. Like the only storyline I cared about was the one with the kid with the mask last season and since that its just been meh to me. Like, we already kinda know how everything is going to go and all the arcs are kinda the same, they show us someone, we care for them for like half an episode, they die, repeat.

Bocchi the Rock! 

I TRIES SO HARD TO CARE TOO I AM SO SORRY. This has been like the number 1 show this year but I… I dont know I just dont like it ASDFGHJ I am not a big fan of cute girls doing nothing specially mixed with the uwu social anxiety quirky. Like they dont paint it in a bad light like most shows do and the art style is very unique but I just dont… Give a shit adfgdhjf I tried I promise but hey if you are into this shows probs the one for you.

Mushikaburi-hime

This one is boring I am ngl. Its not bad but like… Its not good either. Ive seen this trope done SO many times its just boring. It hasn’t done anything bad per se but I just dont really care for it much. I like my romance with spicier ships so yeah I mean if you like cute royal same old same old couples then watch it.

This is trash but it goes higher just because Its what it is and delivers just what I expected. The reincarnated person is annoying as fuck but the girls have cute dynamics so that's why it goes higher. Its just 3 minutes skits of the girls being cute so yeah its okay

Koukyuu no Karasu

I feel like this is a good show but I am just not the target for this adsfgh its a show you gotta pay attention to understand and a lot of history goes behind it and it just kinda bored me but I know its not bad. I just dont think its for me but that's okay I might keep watching it.

Eternal Boys 

Its okay. Its a nice concept and I have only watched like 3 eps but its a nice message I guess. Its short and whatever so it doesn't take much time to watch but its not something revolutionary. I like idol shows so maybe I am giving it more than what it is.

Mob Psycho

This is the one that gets me cancelled part 2 SKSKSK. I am not going to lie besties, I am not the biggest mob psyhco fan. Its okay, I just never got into the hyper around it sorry :(( I really wish I could because I know its a good story and I ddi like that last episode a lot but like,,,,, I feel like the story was over last season ASDFGH But hey I am glad y'all enjoyed it a lot!

Boku no Hero Academia 6th Season

I am ngl, I am like on ep 2 of bnha season 6 but have seen the Dabi scene like 20 times thanks to social media and I got no choice but to Stan. I dont like this arc of bnha as y'all know but it seems more interesting than last season and I like the way the animation direction is going so I will give them points for it.

Do It Yourself!! 

Lesbians your honor!!!! I like this one! Its cute girls doing silly lil stuff and I am not a big fan of the genre like I said but this one is more entertaining for me, maybe because I am more into DIY shit but its cute!! Nothing big happens tbh but its a soft watch to put in the background if y'all enjoy this

Romantic Killer

This was cute! A refreshing romcom from the ones weve gotten recently tbh. I liked it even though I have a different interpretation of the road they took it in the end but it was a fun show to watch with some nice gags and cute characters, defo give it a go!

Renai Flops

Okay hear me out. This one is in a weird place but hear me out. I hate everything this anime stands for because it was such a cliche weird and ecchi but it was such an interesting train wreck I HAD to keep on watching every episode and when I least expected it I was suddenly on ep 6 and the twist left me screAmiNG. It kinda goes downhill again after ep 7 but just because it took me so off guard (dont wanna spoil it but aloO) it goes high up, gg 1 for the ecchi trash 0 for Maria this round.

Yowamushi Pedal: Limit Break

Ngl this season of yowapeda hasn't been as hyped as I hoped for me but I care so much about the characters I will place it high up SKSKSKSK its basically more of the same; I honestly miss the upperclassman a lot but its okay my babies appear like for .2 frames and I start sobbing

Akuyaku Reijou nano de Last Boss wo Kattemimashita

4-nin wa Sorezore Uso wo Tsuku

THIS IS HOW YOU DO CUTE GIRLS (AND TSUKASA LY BESTIE) DOING CUTE STUFF IN A GOOD WAY. If you like Saiki K you'll like this show. I dont know how to explain it but it gives the energy from Saiki K and I loved it they are very important and relevant.

Spy x Family Part 2 

Its more of the same of part 1 y'all know spy x family its a good show I love them all I love when my families are found go stream it look at Bond and Anya being best family

Tiger & Bunny

The gays are back for more and better! Not my favorite season buT I still care about them all so much that I dont care SKSKSK go stream tiger & bunny I dont have much more to say

Guys guys my favorite comfort soccer players are finally animated!!! Watch it. If y'all follow me y'all know I am annoying about blue lock. Its the only anime that has Bachira AND Reo imagine the odds!!! Its a great sports anime and the characters are great and I love it and its my comfort okay
