arrowhead spears are usually under to category "mao" (矛）and as far as im aware there are 3-ish types (?) (mao矛, qiang枪 and shuo槊). qiang would be closer to the ones in the pic but !!!! they all have diverse variations of spear heads so it might take a while to find the exact one.

also i am not sure what you mean by ‘”tang shen”? Tang seng (唐僧/Tan Senzang/Tripitaka) from Journey to the West was a monk seeking nirvana/to relieve people of suffering, and was based upon a real Buddhist monk (XuanZhang). Throughout the surrounding myths, it is believed that eating tangseng’s flesh could bring immortality (which is why so many monsters/yaoguai hunted him down and also the reason why the monkey king sunwukong was assigned by a higher order god (i dont remember the name oops) to protect him. there were also like 3 other disciples but bailongma (the horse tangseng rides on) doesn’t really do much other than transport him (?) so idk. also im pretty sure it was also assigned by the same god to accompany tangseng soooo yeah.

but it would make sense for Big Mama to want to get rid of/eat Tangseng for his flesh or idk which motive ROTTMNT would give her. In “Journey to the West”, the spider witches/yaoguai (zhizhujing蜘蛛精）took a more temptress/seductive role to lure tangseng to his death for yk his rumored divine flesh (that sounded weird). it might have been possible for Lou Jitsu to have a close relationship with Tangseng as friends/associates/coworkers for Big Mama to target him as a romantic interest (fake) but idk i havent really watched that far yet. 

Another interesting thing is that Big Mama might have 6 other siblings (cause there are 7 total spider witches in the originial JttW text) so maybe they could be other ruling mob bosses (:eyes:)?

the masks are interesting cause they remind me of the guard lions in the front of temples/gates/entrances to (you guessed it) guard the gates and protect the people inside from evil spirits such as the witches or bad luck/bad fengshui. basically the western equivalent of gargoyles on cathedrals n christian monuments. but the comparison of the masks to lion guardians are a bit of a far stretch imo. Otherwise i think they are just oni masks (they had the same purpose but were used ceremonially (i think)).

Big Mama's Chinese Roots and a Connection to Tang Shen?

First off, to preface... this whole thing started because @caro-rolo figured out that the Mystic Portal Key doohickeys in Rise are actually just some kind of fancy compasses that have North, South, East, and West written in Chinese characters.

Now, the first thought I had to learning this was "Tang Shen" because in the TMNT universe where Japanese influence is pretty heavy, she is notable for having a Chinese name.

She is also the love interest of Hamato Yoshi in many different variations. Though in Rise, that role belongs most notably to Big Mama, with Tang Shen being a blink and you miss it easter-egg credit on the cover of Jistu for Justice:

Mama is also most likely the source of where Splinter got his mystic portal key, and she even has one of her own in her office. Judging by how much control she has over the Hidden City, from the Battle Nexus, to demolition derbies, to train stations, to crime rings, she seems to have a large control over just who all is in her city, and these keys could very well be something she controls directly.

Now, Big Mama has all the set ups for having typical TMNT Japanese roots. Even her home estate seen in "Hidden City Job" has a very Asian look to it inside and out:

Plus, the whole "her being a yokai", makes it easy to assume she is based on some kind of Japanese spider demon like Jorōgumo, Yatsukahagi/Tsuchigumo, or Ōgumo, etc.

But "Yokai" can also be used to describe the Chinese term "yaoguai" which is basically the same definition.

So if Mama were a Chinese spider demon instead, the first one who comes up on a quick Google search is "zhī zhū jīng" or "spider woman". These are 7 spider demon sisters who fight Sun Wukong in Monkey King: Journey to the West.

Here, the spiders changed into seven beautiful young ladies who wanted to eat the flesh of Sun Wukong's master, Tang Seng, which is said to make the consumer immortal and forever young.

"Tang Seng"... "Tang Shen"... sounds pretty similar.

And aren't there also some animation ties from ROTTMNT to Lego Monkey King? Tangent side note, but there's a spider demon queen in that universe too and guess what? SHE'S PURPLE!

And where did Mama and Lou Jistsu first meet? On set of one of his movies "Crouching Shrimp Hidden Tiger Prawn" in 1984. A movie where an actress like Tang Shen could very well have ties to? (We'll come back to this at the end.)

Another chip in the Chinese vs Japanese bucket is Big Mama's Security Team:

At first, I thought their distinct faces represented Blue Japanese Hannya/ Oni masks, but what if they're supposed to be Chinese Nuo masks instead? Not unlike Zuko's Blue Spirit mask in ATLA.

You could also argue these guys are wielding a sort of Qinglong Ji or Fangtian Ji, which are Chinese spear or polearm weapons. (But if anyone knows what those spear thingies are really called, please let me know, it's driving me nuts!)

In conclusion, I got sent on a massive rabbit hole because of a fictional compass and regret nothing! 🧭

Now what is Big Mama's connection to Tang Shen? Are they related? (The actress does look a bit purple.) They could be sisters like the 7 sisters of the Monkey King lore. Did Mama seek to get rid of Tang Shen so she could get closer to Lou Jitsu herself? Are they the same person? Is Big Mama based on Japanese or Chinese folklore? Did any of this make any sense at all?

"taerae~" — "what now?" he sighs, hinting that he can already sense the mischief matthews up to. matthew chuckles "im.. super bored". taerae sets down his phone and sighs again as he slouches into their shared couch. "me too, do you wanna do something?" he asks the boy beside him, shifting his place to face matthews grinning face.

"lets call yn." matthew declares in a stern voice. "oh, youre that bored?" — "so.. bored, taerae". I think we can all tell what bored means by now.

"well, i guess we could..." taerae mumbles, faster than he thought he would. matthew grabs his phone and immediately dials your number.

you pause the show your watching to pick up another call from yet again, matthew.

"hello?" — "yn~.. me and taerae are so... bored. could you come over? lets hangout."

"matthew, i came over a few nights ago. and the night before, and the night before that! are you sure the others are okay with this? I cant keep going back and forth from my house everyday."

you exclaim, worried if your intruding the other boys space by coming over so much. you tried to lessen the habit but you just couldnt say no to matthews sweet whiny voice.

"i.. okay.. I'll be there in 10." you hang up the phone quickly as you get ready to see your best friends for the fourth time this week.

my day's just started (i just woke up) but my whole week has been really bad- i had all my exams crammed into this week and due to family reasons i couldnt study at all last week. usually i'm not so stressed out but i'm senior year now and everything is becoming real and i don't think i can handle it all.

i have my maths test today (i had 2 this week bc i do normal maths and specialist maths- that specialist maths threw me and im still a little sore over it so i feel like i'll do bad in my normal maths test- even though ik thats stupid bc i KNOW my normal maths content and im normally GOOD at maths... idk)

ig i've been panicking for my future alot lately. i dont want to disappoint anyone anymore and i want to be smart again but its getting so confusing 😭

GUYS I WENT TO TGE BEACH AND ALMOST DROWNED

Ok so i was on my pooltoy(hes a big intex aligator) and i was laying on him short ways(he was sideways idk how to explain) and i was floating in the water and it felt nice so i closed my eyes for a while and then it turned out i floated too far away from the beach! A guy came to my rescue uwu my eyes were closed bc i was so exhausted, and i didnt notice at first anyone was coming, but i heard him say something, and i looked up at him and he asked my name(i answered, i figured it was similar to why paramedics ask for your name) and he said his name was Thor and he had me hold onto him and he pulled me back to the beach uwu

It was so scary i was like crying, and by the time i got to my friend(he was asleep on the beach) i just. Fell to the ground bc my whole body felt like jelly ><

Okay so I started working through some problems on a website I discovered called Rosalind. It's several bioinformatics coding challenges. Harder ones unlock as you complete easier ones. It's pretty fun! Each problem has taken progressively longer to complete, sure, but I'm really loving getting back into the problem-solving mode. The one thing is that they don't give you aaaaaany coding help or hints or suggestions, so that will probably make things really difficult down the line (the best way to learn!!! (I need to maintain optimism)). Currently (almost) everything has been within my skillset, so mostly string manipulation and simple operations, and even though all of my work was probably worth a combined five hours on the eight problems (only finishing seven because I couldn't figure out probability), they ultimately weren't too bad. This will probably be what I spend my time on in the office to keep my coding skill up when I have nothing else to do.

While I should probably be learning R... I simply don't want to right now. Maybe in July after I get back from home idk.

I've also started watching music theory lectures (as opposed to just the interactive online textbook thing), and I really enjoy them! The circle of fifths is really clicking now for the first time in my life lol. I might try to also use downtime in the lab to write out my scales since I have a better understanding of how they work (kinda). It presents the textbook content in a slightly different way which I kind of appreciate, and then I can take that perspective back to the online textbook exersizes which I do for a few minutes daily. When I go home (so very soon!!!) I'm going to have to bring out ol' girl Melody and try some things, I think.

On that note (hehe), I need to think of a name for my bass!! My flute is Melody, my sax is Jasmine, my uke is Lulu... which are admittedly not very creative but I think they got a little better over time :P (Melody because flutes play melody (I was twelve, okay?), Jasmine because saxes play jazz, and Lulu for Honolulu because ukes are from Hawaii). So I think that, in keeping with tradition, the name has to be a little cheesy. I have one idea, but I don't think it's clever enough.

I haven't been eating very well lately. I'm in the process of restocking my pantry. I think I sort of just.. ran out of steam for cooking for myself. So it's been an embarrassing amount of chef boyardee, uncle ben's, velveeta... but tomorrow, I'm shaping up! Meatball stroganoff. And I have a plan for future meals, so I'll keep an eye out for sales, etc etc. Gonna get restocked! I'm shaping up! Maybe tomorrow I'll go for a walk in the morning! Maybe before even picking up my phone! Who knows!

Today I'm thankful that it's cooling down!!!! And also for the rain :) And also that the pollen is gone!!!!! After a month of suffering it was suddenly just no longer blowing into my open window :D

wait one last thing, circling back, even though I want to give my brain a break from the bioinfo problems, I inherently still feel that I've left something undone, as in I started working on problem 7 but couldn't figure out the right formula to even do the probability by hand, and even though I want to give myself a full weekend break, my brain is still passively thinking about it because I feel as though I didn't come to a satisfying conclusion. i wasnt even supposed to finish problem 8 tonight but i couldnt let it go.

so i need a distraction.

crochet it is (I'm working on my vest! it is suuuuper cropped (I'm about 2/3 through the front panel right now) and I fear my tiddies will not make it in, but hopefully it will be done before I go home so I can block it and maybe fix it? [edit, two days later: the front was just wonky because this is the first thing I've crocheted in years and I hadn't figured out my tension yet; def gonna redo it i think]).

actual last thing: surprisingly, I'm actually actively working toward several goals. like i always set them, but the past couple of weeks have been a bit of a lull. now I just feel craaazy energized.

okay here are some tron 2.0 thoughts TEE HEE....... you have been Spoiler Warned for REAL!

tron fans talk abt this game with me okay 🥺

THIS GAME IS BEAUTIFUL .... MWWWWWAH!!!!!! i just love all the different environment designs, the color coding that went into the different computer systems was really cool too. my main takeaway is that the visuals Rule.

the npc designs were cool too but i kind of wish there was More variety (visually as well as voice acting)... but i really enjoy the design direction here ::-) why so many bald antagonist though? lol (AND WHY SO MANY MEN?)

In regards to gameplay i felt like it was pretty standard? i ended up using the basic disc weapon for most of the game because switching weapons takes Way too long if youre actively fighting, which is kind of a shame cuz there are so many weapon options... i did really enjoy the energy claw though 👍also the light cycle racing SUCKED and there was a graphical glitch that made it so that a bunch of visuals to my cycle were missing so i couldnt even enjoy the new design that was hyped up lol. as complicated as gameplay felt up front it definitely felt much better as it went on so it was pretty good.

game progression was very straightforward which i didnt expect..? go do this and then do that, etc. i thought it would be more open. this isnt rlly a complaint bc at least i wasnt lost or anything.

finding all the build notes was thankfully not hard but i enjoy poking around as much as i can in games already... and i liked the mechanics of searching archive boxes and being able to read emails between people ::-) YAY NOSINESS !!! despite finding all the build notes i still didnt end with the highest version i couldve...🤔 no idea how that works then...

moving on 2 story...

all the characters felt a bit flat so that was unfortunate... i wouldve liked to see some more emotions from everyone, bit more personality, etc...

i dont rlly know where jet's attachment to mercury came from, is he in love with this girl, if so why?? im thinking that since she was the first program to really reach out and help jet, that he latched on to her. but as the player i was kind of neutral on her SORRY although her design is cool

i was in disbelief that lora died and i was thinking she would just have been digitized and b in the computer somewhere? and there are allusions to her at least being superficially present in the program ma3a/ma2a etc (they have the same actress ^^__^^) but neither jet nor alan mention this which really shocks me??!!!??? thats your deceased mom or wife can u show a bit of tenderness or something..... maybe this can be cooked up more in an AU or something . idk i was really hoping she (and yori) would be around. i held on to hope for so long ✊️

OBVIOUSLY WISHING TRON WAS THERE... but omg alan being in the digital world shocked me so much i really liked that HEHE. him wearing tron's outfit was fun. i saw someone else in the tag say this, but if tron is "retired" then where is he?? INQUIRING MINDS WANNA KNOW !! he and jet werent very fazed by being digitized which surprised me buuut they also have to adapt fast given the urgency of their situation..

i felt rlly bad that thorne died SNIFFLE SNIFFLE jet and alan just watched a real guy die in front of them thats MESSED UP!! he was really cool too i enjoyed the corruption concept ::-) i was really worried the three fcon employees were gonna die too but im glad they implied that they could be repaired and manifested again.. (what is the word for un-digitized..?)

evil ma3a was really cool 👍 tbh all the antagonists are cool except im neutral on the kernel. i was confused that he was red i thought he was evil like in the original movie with the MCP's soldiers.. but i think hes just a guy who happens to be red. and also trying to kill u but just bc you (jet) are a freak of computer nature and should not be there. thats fair. i enjoyed his boss fight too.

THE FCON MONSTER WAS RLLY COOL HOW AM I NOT SEEING ANY FANART OF THEM.... ::-( i have to fix this... ALSO I WISH they had dialogue. like are they even aware of their situation. missed opportunity !!
