Not to make a parallel that will only make sense to me, but I think a lot about the volcano threat appearing as a dragon Saiki has to fight in Oteage Psychics.

I think about the Revenge of the Sith novelization and Anakin with his dragon of a dead star. The dragon of fear and loss. That represents the fear he has of losing those he loves, and to a certain point, of losing himself because it's in the end, when he has already turned into Vader, that he realizes that in his efforts to fight this dragon, he destroyed himself instead.

And what about Saiki? The volcano is not the only thing keeping him isolated from his loved ones, but it is one of the main things. It's only after he has dealt with the volcano, and as such the timeloop, that he can afford to think "maybe things can finally change, maybe I can tell them about my powers and they can finally see me for who I am and accept me anyway."

But Saiki is just... so afraid ever since the Akechi incident. It's not easy to think about being completely honest with those he loves when the one time he was, things turned out badly. When his entire life he has known he has to hide this part of himself to keep himself safe.

And the thing is he knows, because of the alternative timeline, because of that moment in which they discover him after stopping the volcano, that it could all turn out alright. His friends will love him regardless. He knows that. But he changes the timeline anyway to make it so not only they don't discover him, but they don't even suspect. Because he's not ready, because he's afraid.

It's kinda interesting to think about Reawakened in that sense and in relation with the dragon in that opening, especially because in his efforts to battle that dragon, we see that Saiki actually shatters the Earth in two halves. For Saiki there's always the concern that his powers will cause a disaster, and I think to see this particular dragon too as a representation of his fear makes sense, because in trying to push his fears back, he almost loses it all, with his refusal to accept that he is a psychic and he's the only one who can do something about the meteorite.

aaron bushnell knew exactly what he was doing. he states his intentions with total lucidity and sense of purpose. he knows what he's about to do is extreme--he says so. he speaks calmly, but he's clearly terrified. he takes a deep breath after pouring the accelerant over himself. he has to psyche himself up to light the flame. he struggles with the lighter. he says "free palestine" normally once before he starts to scream it. even through his agony he manages to say it one last time before he stops being able to speak at all. this is a man with total conviction. he wanted to help people, in any way possible. this action was a moral one, and any news outlet painting this as simply a mental health issue is a disservice to his memory. he knew what he was doing when he burned himself in uniform. he knew that there was a chance that sacrificing his own life could go on to save many others. this was the ultimate act of selflessness, and it should be treated as such. may he rest in peace.
