Now Fionna and Cake has only had 4 episodes so far, so bear in mind my response to this might not hold up once more come out, but

I've only seen sporadic episodes of the first 4 seasons of adventure time (out of 10) like, a decade ago, and I'm having a pretty good time.

You're gonna be out of the loop of quite a few things, but so far there is context sprinkled in the show through flashbacks and stuff that will help you a little. You wont be able to like, make predictions as well as people with the full context of the show can though obviously.

If that wouldnt damper your enjoyment then i say go for it. I dont think there's anything wrong with starting in the middle of everything. It's like how Star Wars starts with episode IV.

The Ultimate Guide to MCC!

New to watching mcc? Have no idea where to start? Or maybe you already watch mcc, and just want information all in one place?

Well, good news! I'm insane about MCC and made this massive post for no other reason! I plan to keep this updated as I think of other vods/clips and new stuff happens, so if you want to be sure you're reading the most up to date version of the post, click here.

With all that out of the way-

What is MCC?

MCC stands for Minecraft Championships and is an event organized by Noxcrew, who develop and test the games, and Scott Smajor, who makes the teams! The event takes place usually once a month, and 10 teams of 4 people compete to be the top two teams overall by playing eight minigames! The top two teams battle it out at the end by playing Dodgebolt (first to win three rounds takes the crown).

Noxcrew announces the teams and next date of the event on MCC's official twitter and their newsletter via email, although @mcc-updates posts the teams here as well after they're announced.

Canon VS. Noncanon MCCs

Sometimes, Noxcrew decides to host an MCC that is considered "noncanon". Typically, this means that something about the event is different, and player's coins and stats for that MCC will not go into the overall average of their played events. Some examples of noncanon mccs:

All Things MCC is a channel hosted by Seapeekay and always uploads a video after each MCC featuring their picks for the top ten plays of the event! They also do team predictions + the occasional other video on MCC. Super fun, and a great way to catch some clips you may have missed during the event.

MCC Vault posts clips of various perspectives from various events--typically another way to see things you might not get to see otherwise.

Wolfeei Extras makes content about both MCCI and MCC, and has covered Etho's MCCI arc, MCC team predictions, and SandwichLord's leaderboard domination. Additionally, Wolfeei does content with participants of MCC, such as watchparties. Overall, a great channel to watch to stay in the loop of what's going on!

If you're a Sands of Time enjoyer, Hbomb94 usually goes live the day after the event and vod reviews at least one POV of Sands of Time from each team. Super entertaining, and a fun way to really get to know the strats for that game.

You may be thinking-wow, these games look really fun! Is there a way for anyone to play them?

The answer is yes-and no. While some of the games are not currently available for download, Noxcrew has a public minecraft server called MCC Island, available for anyone to join and play! As of right now, the available games to play on that server are:

Parkour Warrior (available in singleplayer mode and a fast paced competitive mode)

Sky Battle (eight teams compete instead of ten, and there are maps available that are not played in the main event!)

To Get To The Other Side (three rounds instead of six, uses a mixture of maps from the event and maps that are not played in the event)

Hole in the Wall (be warned--there are traps, different maps, and overall is a harder game on the island. My personal fav:D)

Battle Box (three rounds instead of nine, mixture of maps

Dynaball (Not a MCC-event game, but a team based game involving tnt!)

a/n~ so sorry if this sucks cause ive never given a tutorial for my writing but i will DO MY BEST

so you said you wanted to write cute scenarios of dates for the hxh main four+ hisoka, silva , and kikyo! first thing i usually consider when i get requests especially, or just when i have an idea, is: would this character even do this? like if someone asks me, “hey, can you write headcanons for illumi zoldyck with a soft/sweet/kind s/o?” that would be possible (though maybe a little far-fetched canonically). it’s fine to stretch those boundaries a bit for fanfiction, i think. but if that request had instead been like “can you write reader x soft/sweet/kind illumi?” that would’ve been a hard no. don’t alter characters’ natural personalities because then it’s not the same character. what sometimes helps me is, especially if i haven’t watched or read any media of the character im writing for in a while, is looking up the character’s wiki on the FANDOM site and reading through their personality traits as well as their key moments because it helps me to determine what the character would do in the story and how they might react to some things. feel free to also go back and look at clips of the anime or pages of the manga; i find it helps as well!

so for what you want to write specifically, cute dating scenarios, i think that most of the characters you’ve chosen are a good fit. the main four are good for a prompt like that, and the zoldyck children you’ve chosen can be fitting as well. but as for hisoka, kikyo, and silva, that kind of prompt might not fit so well because obviously these characters can’t be seen as sweet or kind or loving. has hisoka ever expressed any interest in wooing someone properly or is he someone who operates on lust? did kikyo and silva court each other and go on little dates or was their marriage probably arranged/forced/only useful for selfish purposes? do their personalities even allow for sentiments like dates? would they even consider that? before writing something ask yourself if you can really see the character doing that clearly in your mind.

i think it’s a great thing that you’ve watched and read the respective canon content of your characters, and it’s good to refer to it if you ever find yourself struggling to characterize someone accurately. however, it is fanfiction, so don’t feel like you need to be super rigid. write whatever you’d like, honestly. but here’s a really common thing i notice when people write fanfiction: they take one aspect of the character and run the shit into the ground. a prime example of this is hobie brown from across the spiderverse and his “i don’t believe in consistency” line. like Jesus Christ. well-written fictional characters, like the ones of hxh, are often as versatile as real people are. make sure the character doesn’t feel like some one-dimensional version of themselves, and please don’t write for the character only based on one aspect of their personality. for example, hisoka is rather unpredictable, so that’s something you’d probably want to incorporate into writings for him. but for characters like most of the zoldycks, you’re going to want to tread a little lighter since they aren’t the main characters and thus we don’t see a whole lot of them. in situations like this, you might have to focus on just what you can see of them. so again, just ask yourself if you can see the character really doing what you’re writing them to do. would they act that way in an actual episode of the anime or volume of the manga? if you’re unsure or the answer is no, try going a different route.

it is also okay to make mistakes. practicing a lot will eventually get you to where you want to be. i still find myself slipping up in my writings and getting carried away (so read over your writings before you publish them)!! my dms are open if you ever would like me personally to review a piece and offer maybe more specific advice!

What did you base Alastors Nox Magia off of? Why type of magic is it and where did you get the ideas for a good ass fanfic?

The answer is sort of a long story that I suppose begins with my first exposure to Hazbin Hotel in general, during a particularly doomed D&D campaign where my character basically acted exactly like Charlie did in the pilot:

Granted, Fianna is not anything like Charlie at all, but the DM found it funny enough to send me the gif above and then everyone got distracted for about 5 minutes while they started meming.

The next day I watched the show and was completely hooked!

I started looking into the Wiki to get a greater understanding of the world shown, read the comics (like all 20 pages hahaha), and listened to Addict while working on prompts for Charlastor Week 2022, taking a break from my regular manuscript I'd been working on for a few years (stay tuned for updates soon on that one!). I had about a month so I decided to try my hand at smaller short stories, since some of the authors I idolize are so good at short fiction, and conveying strong emotions in just a few thousand words.

I watched and rewatched the Pilot, studying the characterizations there as well as thinking about funny and unexpected scenarios the characters could get into while dealing with the concept of redemption and how to make it work (needless to say that the fact that they already had it happen was... unexpected. I have thoughts on that but will put a pin in that for now to avoid getting too distracted from your question!).

I can't remember which rewatch it was that I picked up on an interesting exchange between Charlie and Alastor that turned into a whole mess that would consume me to this day:

She tries to put a limitation on his ability to do too much, and I wondered if that could lead to a sort of interesting power-play between them (because in the end this is the part of their relationship that is fundamentally interesting - they're both powerful people with opposing moralities, having to work together to acheive a common goal). Basically, because Charlie's not precise with her language, she ends up basically not controlling Alastor at all. Which works out in its way, because she hides from her deeper wellspring of power with the aid of a gentle persona.

I liked the idea of something deeper between them and within themselves - and with them being opposing forces, I wanted to work with the idea of Alastor being associated with "night" and "dark", versus Charlie being associated with "sunlight" and "rainbows".

Shadow and Flame, only a bit less Lord of the Rings and a bit more sexy.

Nox Magia , the "night" magic, follows basic arcane principles that I've picked up on through the long and involved process of being a massive nerd and reading a lot of stuff.

For writing magic, I like looking at basic logic structures and hovering somewhere between harder and softer magic. My other manuscript that is premiering this year will be discussing some differing types of magic systems as well, if you enjoy reading Riddle and my other works, I hope you enjoy those as well!

But as for the story itself, it wasn't meant to be a story about a man falling in love... it's the story of a man being dragged into love, kicking and screaming about it. 🦌🌈

To Alastor the Hotel is about control, and his experience there is just a game not to be taken too seriously. Charlie is also about control, or rather, trying to find a way to control without breaking everything with her terrible strength.

Alastor embraces his strength, while she hides from it, and he finds that contradictory instinct in her interesting, so he comes up with the idea of a game to teach her some magic that might help her. But as with all magic, intent governs everything (even when you don't realize), and the spells he's teaching are telling a particular kind of story - you can preview what's happening in the chapter titles that have the runes' names! 🍷

I genuinely love your works, especially with the TFP kids. And I was wondering your opinion on Transformers: Rescue Bots? It’s more kid-friendly, but very well written.

AH good old rescue bots. Personally I wouldn't watch it for fun or anything unless it was for writing purposes. When I skimmed the show, I loved the characters, but I found myself bored by the episodic plots more often than not. It's a very well done show though! The characters are given proper attention, the lore is a bit wacky, but it seems to mesh well enough with its parent continuity.

Personally I didn't like the humans all that much, but that's my assessment of pretty much all human characters. The TFP kids are an exception simply because they came as a package deal with the bots in a very tense war situation. No I cannot explain why the wartime vs peacetime difference makes me appreciate a human character more. No I do not like the bayverse humans despite them hitting those marks.

Annnyway, I appreciated the spotlight on lesser known or new bots in the show. Rescue Bots does an excellent job subtly fleshing out the TF universe, especially TFP which was clearly a bunch of bogus thrown together in a semi-coherent manner to be consumed by fans. Although admittedly 99% of my TF knowledge comes from fans telling me about stuff or via reading the wiki/watching clips, so I cant exactly be called a critic. With that said, it was a good show on its own. Would 100% recommend. However I prefer something a bit more mature and with a more linear story that has an overarching threat.

TFP spoiled me.

New Waves by Kevin Nguyen [link to LA Times review] i read this a year or two ago and enjoyed what it had to say about online vs IRL friendships, grief, hustle culture, and creative identity.

running after two hares by chaparral_crown on ao3 this is probably my favorite fic of all time. no exaggeration. i have the whole thing printed out on 200+ pages of copy paper bound with comically large binder clips. and it's not even finished! there's this fanon concept called HEU (Hannibal Extended Universe) where people consider all of the different characters that the main actors played outside the show (in other shows, film, etc) to be connected to the showverse. for some reason i've never been able to suspend my disbelief enough to get into a lot of HEU content. i'm picky about fic just as i am with any other creative writing i engage with -- i have been for most of my life. THEN. i come across this author's insanely popular HEU fic, and i've read non-HEU stuff from them before that i adored, so i figure 'why not' ... and this 'crack treated seriously' quickly became one of my fav things ever. the prose alone is so masterful. and it's such a DENSE read, like, you really gotta slow down to appreciate all the introspective asides and jokes and commentary about the text (show) and metacommentary about how unusual pairings thrive, inside and outside of fiction.

Starsky & Hutch Virtual Season [link to Fanlore wiki] i got into S&H fandom in 2012. i remember how intrigued i was at the concept of the Virtual Season, which had its heyday a decade before i got into the online fandom. this kind of fan activity is the precursor, imo, to stuff like people calling installments of their webnovels 'episodes', the concept of a 'dream season' (ex: how hannibal ppl talk about how season 4 would play out if the show hadn't been cancelled), etc. people weren't just writing serialized fic, they were cultivating a really unique Experience

Prefacing this with the fact that I know next to nothing about Helluva Boss. 99.9% of what I know about it and its characters come from Hazbin Hotel fics, random clips on YouTube, and some sporadic wiki reading. Namely, everyone seems to completely love Fizzarolli and Asmodeus so I finally caved and looked up info about them just to get a better feel for who they were. They're precious and have single handedly convinced me I should watch Helluva Boss, if only to expand the potential worldbuilding of Hazbin Hotel (considering they apparently take place in the same universe).

Now that being said...the reason I have gathered you all here today is to discuss something very important.

WHY THE FUCK HAVE I NOT SEEN MORE STUFF REGARDING VOX AND MAMMON????????

Like something that I have thought about quite a lot is that Vox could be very easily played as either a Pride or Greed Sinner. He very much toes that line and ngl it makes me imagine that when he was sent to Hell there was an actual debate on which ring he should be sent to (I have actually imagined this happening with a couple other Sinners as well, such as Valentino and Husk, their debates being for Lust and Gluttony respectively though I'm pretty sure Asmodeus would have given up that battle pretty quickly considering he's all about consent).

But like, my brain is buzzing with possibilities for this duo. I don't want to spill too many because I might actually write them and wouldn't want to spoil anything, but one idea in particular I need to get out of my system.

I see a lot of people talking about the falling out between Alastor and Vox being at least partially to do with Vox changing. Like he becomes all about money...and fame...and Alastor thinks of him as a sellout. Do you see it? Do you see the vision? What if Vox, still a fairly young Sinner for all intents and purposes, gets tricked into making a deal with Mammon? Mammon knows there is greed in his soul just waiting to be fed and nurtured and he promises Vox power, enough power to make Alastor truly respect him as an equal. But that power corrupts and feeds that lurking greed and he slowly but surely drifts away from the person Alastor found so interesting to be around in the first place.

As for what Mammon gets out of this, I like to imagine that the Sins get their power from not only how many souls they have in their rings, but from the potency of those souls. Vox is a very potent soul and Mammon is definitely a sore loser about Lucifer getting him. But having him as a thrall is the next best thing.

Side note that they both have fucking electrokinesis like COME ON

I have watched both anime adaptations! I take bits and pieces that I like and ignore other bits (*cough* mukuro *cough*). I also know that 77 all survived, but I adore that cast and want them to be involved in the Ghost AU as well, so for now their bodies are just in a comatose state while they vibes with 78 and 79.

Have you/will you read the manga adaptations/spin-offs?

I have my personal preferences, but I’m usually pretty open to most ships. Usually I’ll draw/reference Ishimondo, Sakuraoi, Leosaya, Fuyupeko, Sondam/Soudam, and the Training Trio in my comics though.

Probably! I focus on things as I get inspiration to, so I haven’t discontinued anything! I just can’t promise consistent content for it.

1- I had fun reading a ton of fics for a fandom I'm not in a while back. Filtered for tags I like and sorted by kudos for fan favorites. I decided to wiki/watch clips cause some canon stuff are interesting. The more I knew, the less I wanted to read - the characters and their typical personalities in fics are very much different from canon that I was confused if they were the same people. The comments for those praise how "in character" they are as well so I thought that was how it actually was.

2- Looking up info, I think I get where the characterization in fics came from as it seems like writers just exaggerated some good and bad traits (no matter how small) depending on how much they like the characters. If they liked them, even antagonists can be depicted as actually good people. If they hated the character, even if they're protagonists, they're irredeemable jerks and writers can't believe they're in the good side. It felt jarring to see how ooc they seem so I stopped reading.

Ben Drowned Hot Take

Honestly I think the story worked way better back when we initially thought it was just about the ghost of a kid that was drowned by either a grown man or their own father. Back before all the cult stuff was added and all these characters were added that literally nobodies knows or seems to care about.

I hold the opinion that horror stories work better the less you have to work with. Like how “Talk to Me” is really a big allegory for grief and substance abuse and that’s it. It was then praised to be one of the best horror movies of the year because it told the story it wanted to tell and didn’t add any more. Like frankly I think adding a lot of lore really takes away the horror of it all because people as a whole have this dread when it comes to the unknown.

It’s like with the Backrooms. Back when that became a thing, people were drawn to the images alone because of the unsettling nostalgia they invoked by presenting something familiar yet otherworldly. That’s all they needed to be, but people started to add levels and lore and monsters and suddenly the Backrooms were no longer scary. Really they should have stopped with the levels because the idea of suddenly clipping into those stages with various environments that you find and no way out is actually fucking terrifying, but that’s really the only addition it needed.

Honestly my theory is that people really could not handle the lack of a story behind the idea of the backrooms, they were too unsettling, so they decided to make up lore to fill in the gaps so that they no longer give the sense of dread that they used to have.

The point is that the story of Ben Drowned worked as something scary because it took the familiar and beloved game that is Legend of Zelda, and added this tragic and horrific twist of a kid haunting the game and tormenting the player all while showing him what happened to them as a victim of either a drowning accident or outright murder.

By adding the cult and the idea of ascension and making Ben and BEN two completely different figures where one is the collection of victims…it’s just too much. And it was done in a way where unless you were keeping up with the updates, you’re stuck either watching a long video tying to put the pieces together or reading the wall of text that is the wiki to try to understand everything (I still don’t understand most of it).

It became a mess of complicated story beats, trying to be something bigger when it didn’t need to be. Especially when what we initially had actually worked really well as Ben was one of the few popular characters that actually had a good story.

Today's Focus

09.16.24 - Monday has rolled around again and I feel like Garfield but I'm unable to stay in home in bed about it. It's warm today, even in the office; it's like they have all the ventilation shut off right now it's weird. So I have a sweater that goes with this outfit but I feel like I only needed it for the morning commute where it's now kind of chilly until the sun really gets going. Also, I have a green claw clip I was going to use to pull my hair back a bit but I forgot it on my vanity.

Work - Today I have to make sure I make up a secure cloud link for opposing counsel in one of SJC's old cases, and make sure that a couple of her charges get paid; there's a trip to Boston that needs reconciliation and there's a few invoices that need to get paid. Other than that I have nothing else to worry or care about.

Background Noise - Back in the office so I'm back to binging YT, but like. I feel like I kept that energy over the weekend lol. In total I got off 56 videos, including a few livestreams that were multiple hours long. I know I probably won't do that much today, but I have a lot of short videos I'm going to try and watch fast so let's see how close I get.

Study - Monday is case law day, and I have stuff I'm going to try and get through so let's see how far I get.

I did read some Wiki pages over the weekend; a couple I had temporarily bookmarked, and like a handful of tabs off of my phone. Could be worse.

Extras - Monday means I clean out the catbox from the weekend and sweep up in the spare room; today's dinner is a buffalo chicken pasta that seems both flavorful and relatively easy to accomplish. Then it's onto watching nonsense with hunny, followed by silly stuff; we commence the rewatch of Kamen Rider W tomorrow. Lord knows if I'll have the energy for creativity; all my energy has been going into the house lately (but it's all been good stuff that makes my house cleaner and therefore less anxiety-causing.)
