is the idea that as a compromise to only having to toggle off tumblr live once a month, you now have this permanent tumblr live icon regardless of ur setting choice stuck to the bottom in the middle of everything in the hopes that i click on it accidentally anyways even though it's clear i don't want it or? where is the NO 100% STOP GIVING ME THIS SHIT I DON'T ACCEPT YOUR POLICIES AND LITERALLY COULD NOT CARE LESS ABOUT TUMBLR LIVE AND WILL NEVER BE INTERESTED IN THIS TYPE OF FEATURE OR FORMAT.
@zingring @photomatt @humans idk how many feedback requests people have to cut tumblr for "no" to just be a valid response here. ppl aren't dumb and see u inching over the line trying to force this on them despite the snooze choice.
what, are there so many ppl snoozing and such a low adoption rate that you know you need to trick users into using it so you can "make number go up" or? đ

iâm in such disbelief right now and beyond disgusted.
i really hope yâall are choosing your morals over kpop; because we do not know these men at all. i will never side with or defend a predator and a criminal, even with little to no proof. even if there is the smallest chance he may be innocent, i will always believe the victim first.
some of you, as fans of the boys for years and him in general, i know you must be feeling disappointed and betrayed. youâre not dumb for previously supporting him, as we couldnât have possibly known. but now is the time for a reality check and itâs time to wake up and take a step back. this just goes to show that we know absolutely nothing about them.
for sm to just outright put out a statement on their own before any rumors even surfaced and immediately kick him out? this has to be insanely serious and iâm terrified of what he couldâve done. the crazy thing is with everything currently happening in korea with the telegram situation, and korean women constantly being in danger in general because of the men there, iâm not at all surprised that celebrities are being exposed. sm has protected criminals before, and held onto lucas when his scandal came out as well as other artists who have been exposed for similar crimes. i canât even imagine the severity of the current situation. weâve seen what happened with the burning sun, and these men are not immune to being misogynistic, vile human beings.
members have already unfollowed him and deleted posts with him in them; his best friend of 17yrs has unfollowed him. the company taking the initiative and him getting kicked out of the group in less than a second before anything even came out, no denying the claims or even trying to defend him. that should be enough to tell you and understand how serious this actually is. i am beyond disgusted with him and this whole situation.
i sincerely hope the victim is doing okay and praying for them to heal and get the justice they deserve. and remember that your love for these celebrities should always be conditional, because we do not know them. itâs their job to put on a show and show you their public persona, but behind closed doors? we donât know what theyâre actually like. we put them on a pedestal and yet we donât know what theyâre really capable of. they are still men after all. i hope the police are taking this seriously. there needs to be consequences and these women need to be protected.
let this be a lesson to all of us. they donât know us, and we donât know them, not really, not at all.
ALWAYS choose morals over these strangers you idolize. and as women, we should be standing with the victims.
maybe not all men, but enough of them. and maybe not all men, but somehow always a man. and going forward, i will continue to support nct as a whole with the remaining members. however, keeping the situation in mind, i will be supporting from afar for a little while. if the situation escalates and other members are investigated and new information comes to light about the rest of them either knowing or possibly being involved, it would be best to step away for good. i will do my best to stay updated. but i do hope the rest of the members are doing okay, and hopefully no other members were involved; but this, just shows that they can always surprise us. you never think itâll be your fave, until it is.
letâs hope this causes a domino effect and more of these people are exposed and charged for the crimes theyâre committing.
sending love to anyone who has ever experienced sexual violence or has been targeted and been in a similar situation. it is not your fault and it never was!
love you all and my dms are always open if you need to vent. <3
âïžEDIT: also i wanna add that we need to not praise the rest of the members or any other celebrity for simply unfollowing him on social media. that is the least of anyoneâs worries.
we donât know if they were aware, we donât know if they knew and were protecting him or turning a blind eye. it could be them trying to save themselves and clear their guilty conscience. maybe they didnât know and are just as shocked as we are, we donât know that either.
we blindly trust these people and believe they have good intentions but look at where that can lead to. fans being upset is valid, yes; but remember people with money and power will do whatever it takes to sweep things under the rug and make it go away in order to save face and keep their image and reputation.
follow-up post here.

I simply can't wait to reveal who's on this weeks pod, you guys! You're going to DIE. (peep the clue in the second picture!) user928 her podcast set up is so aesthetic i can't user0928 RED BULL??? what does this meeeeeean??? >>>user1211 she hasn't done a ton of athletes in the past, maybe she got one of the Red Bull athletes!! user00291 DU DU DU DU MAX VERSTAPPEN. (shhh let me be delulu for a minute) >>>user221 as much as i'd love that, we all know how much Max hates interviews.
There was absolutely no reason why having Max Verstappen on your podcast should be making you this nervous. Youâve interviewed actual heads of state, a former president, and royalty for crying out loud and youâre losing your mind over Max fucking Verstappen? You supposed it came from the fact that you had spent most of your childhood traveling from track to track to watch your dad race in NASCAR, racing was in your blood and you knew how revered and idolized Max was. And how rabid his fans could get. You wanted to get this interview right. Needed to get this interview right. Motorsport were still a huge part of your life, even if you werenât really outwardly an active fan. You never missed a NASCAR or F1 race and while you considered yourself a Ferrari girlie, Red Bull was most certainly your second team.Â
âEverything ready?â Your assistant Shannon pokes her head in as you fluff the last throw pillow on the cream colored lounge chair. Scanning the room, everything looks to be in order. The two overstuffed chairs dominate the center of the small recording studio, each with a microphone set up on a small side table next to each chair. Instrumental versions of Taylor Swift songs floated out of small speakers tucked away and a few candles burned in the low light of the studio, creating the exact ambiance you were famous for.Â
Youâd been doing your podcast, The Yapping Hour, for nearly five years now and it was now one of the most popular podcasts being produced. You specialized in relaxed interviews of people that the general public donât get to see relaxed very often. Your big break had come about 3 years ago when you had somehow managed to land an interview with Michelle Obama, her episode was still the most streamed episode of yours to date. Everyone had fallen in love with your interview style, how you got these normally highly media trained individuals to drop their guard down a little and be real for even just an hour. It gave people such a unique glimpse behind the curtain of fame and your fans ate up every bit of it.Â
âI think so!â You nod, smoothing down the front of your boyfriend cut jeans even though the denim is perfectly ironed without a single wrinkle.Â
âGood, because he just pulled in the parking lot.â Shannon smirks. She knows how nervous you are for this interview and is insisting itâs because you have a crush on the driver. Which would utterly unprofessional if it were true. But it wasnât true. At all. âAnd heâs driving this matte black Aston Martin.â She closes her eyes as she bites her lip, smirk growing even wider.Â
âOkay, letâs cool it on the hero worship.â You warn, following Shannon out into the lobby of the building.Â
Outside, itâs a dreary late April morning in the heart of downtown London. You had traveled from your home base in New York City just for this interview but had been surprised at how much you liked the ambiance and energy in the city. So much so that you had extended your stay a few extra weeks. The good thing about being your own boss of a podcast was that you could literally work from anywhere you had your laptop.Â
Peering out into the parking lot, youâre surprised to see a lone figure in jeans and what looked to be a Red Bull windbreaker, hustling across the pavement towards the door. When he approaches the door, Shannons steps forward to open the door, a gust of wind whipping at your hair when Max comes bustling in through the doors.Â
âHello!â Maxâs voice sends involuntary shivers down your spine, a feeling you fight hard to shove down. This is not the time to be a fan girl, you remind yourself.Â
âHi Max, thank you so much for joining us today! Can I get you some water or maybe some tea?â Shannons steps forward first, extending her hand.Â
Max takes it and gives her a wide smile, his eyes crinkling at the edges. âWater is fine, thanks.âÂ
âMax, itâs such a pleasure to meet you.â You step forward then, the heels of your black Louboutainâs clicking on the hardwood floor as you approach him. It takes every ounce of focus you have not to react at what feels like a white hot spark flickering over your skin when his hand touches yours for the first time.Â
âPleasure is mine.â He murmurs, cat like smirk replacing the warm smile that had greeted Shannon. Your social media did you absolutely no justice and Max was finding it hard to keep his composure you were so pretty.Â
âAre we waiting on anyone else or is it just you today?â You ask, eyes darting above his shoulder to see if there was anyone still in the parking lot.Â
âWhy? Will I be needing my body guard today?â He quips as he follows you towards the recording studio. Â
You pray the dim lights in the studio hide the way youâve gone pink. âOf course not! Itâs just that normally the people I have on the show travel with anâŠentourage.âÂ
âI donât like people.â He says, as if itâs the most obvious fact in the universe. âI prefer to travel solo. Besides, Iâm no Queen of the Netherlands or Justin Trudeau, I donât really need an entourage.âÂ
He casually drops two of your biggest interviews like itâs nothing and you feel the pink tinge of your cheeks heat to a crimson red. âYouâve listened to the show then?âÂ
He nods, taking the seat you offer him as Shannon and your AV guy Steve bustle around getting things set up. A bottle of water appears for each of you and you take out the pages of notes youâve made even though youâve got all the questions memorized. You like to be prepared and prefer your interviews to be more conversational, less question and answer.Â
âI like to know what Iâm getting myself into.â His eyes hold this glint of mischief that if you were less of a professional, would have you biting your lip and kicking your feet. Truth was, Max had spent an ungodly amount of time on your socials and wikipedia page, obsessing over you and your career.Â
âAnd yet you still came.â You tease.
âI did.â He says simply and you canât help but notice how his gaze briefly drops from your eyes down to your lips and quickly back up. Itâs so quick that if you werenât in the business of watching and observing people, you probably would have missed it. But those baby blue eyes of Maxâs are so easy to read, all you can do is grin back at him.Â
âWell, thank you for making the trek into London today. I do appreciate it.âÂ
You briefly explain how the interview is going to work, how Steve is going to make sure everything is set up and recording, how youâll post audio and video versions and that he can have final say in anything that goes in or stays out of the interview. Youâve found that a lot of your guests appreciate that little clause and in the five years youâve been doing the show only a handful of bits have been kept out. You like to think itâs because youâre good at what you do and get people to open up on a level that they feel comfortable with.Â
Steve finally gives you the okay and you settle into the cozy lounge chair, Max sitting comfortably in the one opposite you.Â
âThank you again for joining me today, Max. Iâve got to admit, I was a little surprised when your manager said youâd agreed to come on the show. You donât do a lot of lengthy interviews and I could only find a handful of podcast appearances over the years. So, why The Yapping Hour? Why now?âÂ
Max takes a sip of water before placing it on the table beside him. His shoulders are relaxed, his ankle sitting on his knee is a causal pose. Youâve become a veritable body language expert since starting the show and you can already tell this is going to be a good interview.Â
âI like your style.â His blunt answer throws you off for a moment and your cheeks heat. Again. You make a mental note to make sure they edit your complexion in post production to take the blush out. âGP sent me the one you did with Dale Earnhardt Jr a few months ago and I was impressed at how authentic you were. Dale is a character but you got a lot of depth out of him. Your questions went beyond the typical âwhatâs your favorite race track.ââÂ
âWell, thank you. That is quite the compliment coming from you.â For the third time in a short time, you blush at the compliments this man is handing out left and right.Â
Your eyes flicker above Maxâs shoulder to where Shannon and Steve sit, their smug faces tell you that youâre not imagining him flirting with you.Â
âI have to tell you, I went karting with a few friends in prep for this interview and oh my God, Iâve been sore ever since! I can't imagine how hard an F1 car is on your body. Talk to me a little bit about your training sch-âŠâ
âYou went karting as research?â He interrupts you, face a mask of disbelief.Â
Now itâs your turn to smirk, âOf course, I like to know what Iâm getting myself into.â You toss him a wink and enjoy the way your stomach flips when his ears go a bit pink. âMy dad beat me by almost 20 seconds and I donât think Iâll ever hear the end of it, but it was worth it. I can see why so many people get hooked, it was so fun.âÂ
âKarting with a NASCAR legend had to make it a little better though, yeah?âÂ
âYou know my dad?â Your brows nearly hit your hairline, youâre so surprised at this. Your dad had been long retired before Max had come onto the racing scene and there wasnât a huge overlap in fan bases between F1 and NASCAR.Â
Max nods, âHe was racing around the time Jos was in F1. I still remember that one Daytona 500 where he stole the win from Earnhardt Jr on the last lap after heâd led for the entire race.âÂ
You tilt your head back laughing and Max thinks itâs the prettiest thing heâs ever heard, fully entranced by the long column of your neck thatâs suddenly exposed. âOh God, dad is going to die when he hears you know about that race.âÂ
âHave either of you been to an F1 race yet?â A plan begins to form in Maxâs head.Â
âNo!" You lean forward to swat at his arm playfullt. Iâve tried a few times but itâs always fallen through. I do watch most of the races though, as long as my schedule permits. Sometimes itâs easier when you guys are in Europe because the races are so early in New York, itâs easy to watch them from bed on Sunday mornings.â
The image of you wrapped up in a fluffy duvet wearing nothing but his t-shirt as you watch him race nearly sends Max into orbit. He blinks furiously, trying to get that vision out of his mind so he can pay attention to you.Â
âTell me this then, if you could pick any garage to watch the race which one would it be and why would it be Red Bull?"Â
You canât help that laugh that explodes from you then and Max preens under your attention, smile stretching wide across his handsome face. âYou know, I could have sworn it was my name on the podcast Instagram page.â You tease, giving him a wink. âYou keep asking me questions, Iâm going to be out of a job, Verstappen.âÂ
âI canât help it when the interviewer is much more interesting than I am.â He murmurs, taking another sip of water without taking his eyes off of you.
The rest of the interview continues on for the next two hours and you get so much content you feel a little dizzy at the thought of having to cut over half of the episode. For the first time in the podcastâs history, you may have to split this into two episodes. Max doesnât mind one bit, finding that heâs not as nervous as he thought heâd be with how easy he finds it talking to you.Â
You wrap up the interview over an hour past the time you had told Maxâs press officer it would last but neither of you make any movement to get up, despite both Shannon and Steve beginning to wrap things up.Â
âIâm so sorry I kept you this long, Max. I know youâre not a huge fan of lengthy interviews.âÂ
Max just shrugs, âIf all interviews were like this, I probably would say yes to a lot more of them.âÂ
You grin over at him as you rise, realizing the sun is setting outside and your stomach is aching for food. Max follows suit, although he feels a clench in his stomach realizing that his time with you is coming to an end.Â
âCan I ask you something?â He says when Shannon and Steve walk out of the studio, leaving the two of you alone.Â
You look up at him and nod earnestly, âOf course!âÂ
âWhy didnât you ask me about my childhood? Usually itâs one of the first things people ask me, especially in these kinds of interviews.âÂ
You shrug, face heating at being found out. âLike you, I do my research and I figured you might not want to talk about that part of your life. I want my guests to feel comfortable when they come on the show, not immediately put on the defensive. I guess I thought there were other more important topicsâŠâÂ
Your words hang in the air, heavy between you two. Something in Maxâs chest aches at the simple kindness youâve extended him. Itâs true, he doesnât like revisiting his childhood very often, especially when itâs recorded and will be put on the internet. His dad was very much still in his life, obviously, and while he had done a lot of work to move past his childhood, it was still painful to talk about. Â
âThatsâŠwow. Thank you.â Is all he can manage, voice thick with emotion.Â
âOf course.â You murmur, reaching out to touch his elbow in what you hope comes across as a comforting gesture.Â
Maxâs eyes drop to where your slender fingers rest on his bare arm before a smile stretches back across his face. âI know itâs kind of last minute but you were saying earlier youâd never been to a race. Weâre in Miami next weekend and Iâd love it if you were my guestâŠâÂ
You canât help the flutter in your chest at how nervous he appears standing before you. Your eyes dart over to Shannon, the official keeper of your schedule and are delighted when she nods vigorously, phone in hand with your calendar already pulled up. You made a mental note to give that girl a raise ASAP. âI would love to, Max.âÂ
âYeah?â He sounds almost shocked that you had agreed so quickly.Â
âYeah.â You say, a hint of a giggle at the edge of your voice.Â
âHow about I take you out to dinner tonight and we can work out the details.âÂ
âWhy Max Verstappen, I had no idea you were this smooth.âÂ

Really good Twitter thread originally about Elon Musk and Twitter, but also applies to Netflix and a lot of other corporations.
Full thread. Text transcription under cut.
John Bull @garius
One of the things I occasionally get paid to do by companies/execs is to tell them why everything seemed to SUDDENLY go wrong, and subs/readers dropped like a stone. So, with everything going on at Twitter rn, time for a thread about the Trust Thermocline /1
So: what's a thermocline?
Well large bodies of water are made of layers of differing temperatures. Like a layer cake. The top bit is where all the the waves happen and has a gradually decreasing temperature. Then SUDDENLY there's a point where it gets super-cold.
That suddenly is important. There's reasons for it (Science!) but it's just a good metaphor. Indeed you may also be interested in the "Thermocline of Truth" which a project management term for how things on a RAG board all suddenly go from amber to red.
But I digress. The Trust Thermocline is something that, over (many) years of digital, I have seen both digital and regular content publishers hit time and time again. Despite warnings (at least when I've worked there). And it has a similar effect. You have lots of users then suddenly... nope. And this does effect print publications as much as trendy digital media companies. They'll be flying along making loads of money, with lots of users/readers, rolling out new products that get bought. Or events. Or Sub-brands.
And then SUDDENLY those people just abandon them. Often it's not even to "new" competitor products, but stuff they thought were already not a threat. Nor is there lots of obvious dissatisfaction reported from sales and marketing (other than general grumbling). Nor is it a general drift away, it's just a sudden big slide. So why does this happen? As I explain to these people and places, it's because they breached the Trust Thermocline.
I ask them if they'd been increasing prices. Changed service offerings. Modified the product.
The answer is normally: "yes, but not much. And everyone still paid" Then I ask if they did that the year before. Did they increase prices last year? Change the offering? Modify the product?
Again: "yes, but not much."
The answer is normally: "yes, but not much. And everyone still paid." "And the year before?"
"Yes but not much. And everyone still paid."
Well, you get the idea. And here is where the Trust Thermocline kicks in. Because too many people see service use as always following an arc. They think that as long as usage is ticking up, they can do what they like to cost and product.
And (critically) that they can just react when the curve flattens But with a lot of CONTENT products (inc social media) that's not actually how it works. Because it doesn't account for sunk-cost lock-in.
Users and readers will stick to what they know, and use, well beyond the point where they START to lose trust in it. And you won't see that. But they'll only MOVE when they hit the Trust Thermocline. The point where their lack of trust in the product to meet their needs, and the emotional investment they'd made in it, have finally been outweighed by the physical and emotional effort required to abandon it. At this point, I normally get asked something like:
"So if we undo the last few changes and drop the price, we get them back?"
And then I have to break the news that nope: that's not how it works.
Because you're past the Thermocline now. You can't make them trust you again.

user11: y/n and oscar have been together for nearly four years now, they got together when they were like 19. this chloe reed girl went on one date with oscar when they were 17 and now copies everything y/n does to try and get his attention? like down to haircut and tattoos ... it's kinda crazy and y/n has made some references to it but like we're nearing like the third year of this so i think she might snap soon
user12: it's even got to the point where chloe has like started talking with y/n's accent? she has a very obvious accent so like it's INSANE
user13: and to think all of this over a single date SIX YEARS AGO
user14: on a brighter note - y/n was MADE for bangs they look so fucking good
user15: obviously she should stop but if there's anyone you want to look like, it would be y/n
user16: at this point is it even over oscar anymore? or has chloe lost herself to journey to BECOME y/n
user17: the fact that she still camps out under all of oscar's posts and constantly posts in mclaren merch
user18: and don't even get me started with how she's always in the comments of oscar's sisters' comments
user19: someone needs to get nicole to put this girl on blast
user20: remember before elon took away public likes that mark went on a liking spree about chloe being a lil weirdo

user33: oh brother this guy STINKS
user34: i am feeling sufficiently creeped out on the behalf of y/n and oscar
user35: i really don't understand her game here though? does she expect oscar to see this and actually mistake her for y/n and leave y/n for her?
user36: at this point i think she's lost in the sauce
user37: also oscar is hilariously down bad for y/n like he could probably recognise her via vibrational field he would not fall for this cheap imitation
logansargeant: this ain't it btw (it's never been it)
user38: not logan tapping in
logansargeant: who gon check me boo? i ain't got a job
chloereed: i don't know what you're trying to say, but i don't appreciate you spreading misinformation and hate
logansargeant: you have literally copied everything about my best friend down to her sentimental tattoos and you've essentially stalked my other bestfriend for nearly seven years ?
chloereed: it's not stalking if i know i'm what he really wants? she's the imitation of me
logansargeant: you like need help
user39: GO LOGAN
user40: bro has been let of the leash
user41: tbf when you think about it, logan has been friends with oscar for years and by default friends with y/n for just as long so like he's probably seen how this has effected them personally
user42: i don't really see how this is such a big deal, people try and imitate celebs all the time ?
user43: i think it's because she knows at least one of them personally and is very viciously pursuing oscar
user44: also there has to be an aspect we don't know because i don't think logan would be publicly taking her on in the comments if it weren't a lot worse
user45: also ... like it probably feels like shit as a person generally to have everything you do copied and not even get a tiny bit of credit

user50: i once went on a reddit deep dive about this drama where they compiled all the evidence and holy moly this confrontation has been a long time coming
user51: the best (or maybe worse) thing abotu all of this is that her claim of being with oscar first and dating him when they were 17 is based on one 'date' where is was just a joint ball between their schools where there was a compulsory dance in which they were partners
maxverstappen1: yo this shit is insane

You and Sunghoon weren't strangers, you wouldn't go that far.
However, there was a good reason that you weren't friends â you were never home when he was at your parents' house. You'd moved out with your boyfriend a month or so into him babysitting your menace of a sister. She was well-behaved for him, but had been an absolute tornado of a child when your mother would ask you to babysit. You were actually the one who found Sunghoon through an ad on social media, and he'd been yet another thing to add to your parents' monthly budget.
Then again, no one told them to have another kid so late in their lives. Or yours, for that matter. You were eighteen when Mina was born, and it'd been a pretty rocky five years since then. You went off to college and didn't really get to see her grow up, and she soon learned you were someone she couldn't depend on emotionally because you were rarely able to stick around outside of holidays. It pained you, but you knew you'd eventually get the time to bond with her.
And that time came very quickly after meeting Sunghoon â because your boyfriend dumped you after six months, insisting he was too busy with school to maintain a relationship. Heeseung was a graduate student, and he tutored on the side for extra cash. Your parents funded your lifestyle, so you'd never worried about anything â until Heeseung sat you down and said that the relationship was stressing him out.Â
Needless to say, a week after the breakup â you moved back in with your parents and left him to figure out the rent himself. It was a calculated move, but your parents agreed that you didn't need that kind of energy in your life. It didn't stop you from remembering all the other times Heeseung dogged you â from taking continuous 'breaks' from your relationship in the three years you were together, to falling prey to temptation (read: another woman grinding on him at a bar while you were two feet away.)
And you talked about him to every person you possibly could â including now, your little sister's babysitter as he washed dishes in your parents' kitchen. The conversation hadn't started out this way, he'd actually been telling you how much Mina talked about you while you were gone.
"Anyway, that kid loves you, man." He nodded as he slid a plate onto the drying rack, and you laughed softly. "Mina was born when I was a teenager. She just thinks I'm cool now, she'll go through the phase of hating me when she's older." You shrug.
"I wouldn't be so sure. She talks about you a lot, something about you playing a viobib?" His brow is arched, and you snort. "Violin. I played her the violin one time so she'd leave me alone. I'm surprised she talks to you so much, she has a hard time warming up to anyone. Even my boyfriend can't get her to talk to him."
His eyes narrowed slightly, "You have a boyfriend? Since when?" You shrug again. "Since before I met you. I guess I should say ex, though. Boyfriend is the title he prefers, but not the one he deserves. At least, not right now." You say pointedly, and his brows furrowed as he leans on the counter, arms crossed.
"Elaborate." "You're babysitting my kid sister, not giving me counseling."
"Consider it a perk for eldest daughters who act like they deserve shitty men." He says, a bite to his tone as you scrunch your nose. You sigh, nibbling your lip before rolling your eyes. "We're on-and-off. Sometimes I call it off, sometimes he does. He's in grad school and he tutors, and he said everything was stressing him out. He dumped me a bit ago, and I moved back in here. I'm surprised I haven't seen you around more."
"Right, so what about that arrangement is making you believe that you deserve this sort of behavior?"Â
You peek up at him, his brows still furrowed as he awaits your answer. Your stomach tightens a bit as you blink. "I guessâŠI don't know, actually." "Okay, then ditch that loser." He shrugs, and you scoff. "He's not a loser. He's smart and sweet and we're just going through a rough patch." "If you have to justify his presence in your life or his treatment of you to your friends or anyone you talk about him to, then he's a loser. He sucks and he doesn't deserve to have access to you in any way." Sunghoon clasps his hands in front of himself, and you frown.
"He's nice enough." "Yeah, so is any other guy, babe. You're not gonna give just any dude a chance because he's 'nice enough,' are you?" He peers at you through his shaggy hair, and you feel your cheeks heat slightly in embarrassment. "The fact that you allow that behavior, seemingly quite often, will only make him make you his doormat. He'll do it over and over until he's sick of you, then he gets to dump you and make it seem like it was a mutual thing. You won't win in a situation like that." "It's not about winning." You mutter, grabbing a peach out of the fruit bowl in front of you. He leans back on the island, arms crossed in front of him.Â
"Isn't it, though? There is always a prize and a player in a relationship. You," He taps the tip of your nose with his finger gently. "Are the prize, and he's the player. If he's not playing to win you, then he's playing to lose and wasting your time."
You stare into his eyes, not missing the way his brows jump as he leans slightly closer.
"Stop wasting your time on a shitty dude when you can do so much better. Especially if you're really as cool as Mina says. Kids don't lie about people they admire." His tone is slightly teasing, and you roll your eyes. "Mina has thrown eggs at me, I wouldn't be so sure she admires me." "I don't know, she said you're really nice to everyone. That you're funny, you can singâŠdanceâŠ" Sunghoon lists a few things your sister said while you were asleep, and you feel your ears grow hot. "She also said you're the one who taught her how to do backflips, and that she wants to be like you when she grows up. I'd suggest getting that guy out of your life sooner rather than later so you can set a good example." "Did she mention him?" Your eyes snap up, and Sunghoon shrugs. "Once or twice. She said he makes you cry more often than not." You snort, shaking your head as you look down. "What does she know? She's five."
"Kids see things from an unbiased perspective, they're still learning how to be functioning humans. She associates him with you being upset, so I wouldn't be surprised if you told me that you're 'on a break' right now. I've been listening to you for five minutes and I already don't like this guy. If he cared, he'd be here. He doesn't care." "You're only saying that because it's what I need to hear." You roll your eyes as you avoid the rest of his spiel, and Sunghoon shakes his head, stealing a grape from the ones he washed for you earlier. "I'm saying that because it's the truth, and when I love, I make sure the person I love knows." "You don't even know him." You scowl, and he smirks. "Don't have to, babe. It's all over your face. You look defeated as hell when you talk about him." "Not your babe, Sunghoon." You shake your head, and he shrugs. "Could be, if you ditched that guy. I don't even know your favorite color but I can almost guarantee I'd be a better boyfriend than him."
"My favorite color is green." You mutter, and he leans closer to your face. "Anything else you wanna tell me about this guy?" "Why? You'll just be mean about it." You mumble, licking your lips when you feel his fingers tilt your chin up. He coos, "You're cute when you're defensive over a scumbag." "Stop that." You shove his hand away, and he smiles. "You need a rebound or something. All you've been able to talk about since you moved back is this guy. He sucks, babe." "Ugh, I know! Alright, I know he sucks, you don't have to rub it in." You frown, biting into the peach in your hand. "D'you know he'd never tell me I was pretty? I mean, I know I am, he didn't have to. But it would've been nice to hear every once in a damn while." You chew angrily, before hearing him laugh softly. "You have enough confidence for a man to feel like he doesn't need to tell you that. You carry yourself so well, it's honestly very sexy." You look up at him, meeting his eyes. They're calm and sincere, like he didn't just call you sexy in the middle of your kitchen while you're wearing a random t-shirt and sweatpants. "Me?" "Yeah, you. It's just us in here, Y/N." He snorts, "You seriously need to get over this guy. I don't like hearing you talk about this like you deserved it." "What do you know? You hardly know me." You know your voice sounds bitter, but it only spurs him on. "Don't need to know you super well to know you just need to feel appreciated." "Right, appreciated." You roll your eyes, tossing the half eaten peach in the trash. "Like I'm gonna find that in a rebound." "You can." He nods, making you snort. "Like who? You?" "Sure." He shrugs, and you nearly choke on your own spit. "What? Sunghoon, be serious." "I am being serious. If that's what it takes, I'm all for it." He shrugs again, like this is the most nonchalant thing ever, like he's not offering to fuck the bitterness out of you so you'll act normal again. You gawk at him, "Sunghoon, I cannot just use you like that. We hardly know each other, are you insane?" "Is it insane if I say I want you to?" He leans forward on the counter, a soft blush on his cheeks. You gape at him, his finger coming to close your mouth. "Does it matter how well we know each other? I'm sure it'll be a one time thing, and since we don't see each other often, I don't see the harm." "You want me to use you to get over my ex-boyfriend? You want to be my rebound?" You're shocked at his suggestion, he can tell as he shrugs. "You can use me anytime you want. Think about it." He winks, pushing off the island.
You feel your cheeks grow hot as he leaves the kitchen, letting you sit with your thoughts.
Sunghoon lived a mile away, in an apartment complex you helped him pick out once your parents hired him. Your mother had insisted he live in the house, but your father refuted by saying Sunghoon was a grown man, he needed his own space. You'd taken him to fill out the paperwork, and it was one of the last interactions you'd had with Sunghoon before moving out.
You sigh shakily, running your hands through your hair.
It wasn't the worst idea. You knew that Sunghoon wouldn't have offered it if he wasn't attracted to you, at least. You knew what it was like to feel desired, but something about the way Sunghoon looked at you made you feel giddy.
Maybe it was the promise of feeling something new, or the idea that you shouldn't do it â because he works for your parents. Getting involved with you could cost him his job, if anyone found out.Â
You feel your phone buzz in your pocket, and you sigh as you reach to grab it.
Message From: Park Sunghoon (Babysitter) [8:32pm] you know where i live if you're down. [8:32pm] just let me know, gorgeous.
Fuck.
Bad idea, bad idea, bad fucking idea.
It hadn't even been a day since you and Sunghoon had the conversation in your parents' kitchen. Or rather, the awkward moment in your parents' kitchen.Â
It'd been three hours. It was nearing midnight as you stood in front of the elevator, the cold December air biting at your exposed legs. You'd gone to a late dinner with your friend Aeri, and you'd be lying to yourself if you didn't admit that her encouragement is what got you into this predicament.
The elevator dings, revealing a young girl and her dog attempting to step out. You give her a soft smile, earning a nod and a have a good night as you step in. You press the button to the third floor, bouncing on your heels as the elevator starts moving. This could be the worst fuck of your life and you won't even know until after, or even during. What if it's the best fuck of your life and then you're just forced to be around him as his employer rather than a potential fuck buddy or even worse, a girlfriend? "Get it together, Y/N." You mutter to yourself, hearing the elevator ding as you reach the third floor. You step out, turning to the right and walking past three doors, before standing in front of his apartment. His doormat is that of a frat boy's â Please Don't Do Coke In Our Bathroom.
You snort, before knocking on the door softly. You hear rustling, and the lowering of a TV before the pitter-patter of dog feet. You hear him sigh as he unlocks the door, his face appearing before you as he opens it. He looks surprised.
"Y/N, what a pleasure." He speaks smoothly, and you roll your eyes. "It's cold, invite me in." You cross your arms across your chest, making him smile as he steps to the side. You walk in, shivering as you carefully step out of your heels. You squat to pet his dog, but she disappears behind his legs. You pout at him, and he just snorts. "She's shy."
"It's fucking freezing outside, Hoon." Your teeth chatter as he closes the door, taking your scarf as you hand it to him. "Well, you're barely dressed. I assume it would be cold when you're half naked." "Did you want me to wear layers and make this take ten times as long? Be serious." You huff, sliding your coat off. Granted, you'd put this dress on with the idea of going to a bar after dinner and posting thirst traps on your story for Heeseung to see and yearn forâŠ
Which is shitty of you to appear in Sunghoon's apartment after thinking that way.
"I don't think you wore this for me, Y/N. You were at dinner with Aeri." He rolls his eyes, and you forget he also has your Instagram. "Man, just take the win. Do you wanna fuck me or not?"
He shrugs, "Do you want me to?" "You wouldn't have offered and I wouldn't have shown up if the answer to either of those questions was no." You say pointedly, and he clicks his tongue. "I guess you're right." "I usually am." You roll your eyes, making him laugh. "Here, have a seat." "What, are you gonna wine and dine me?" You tease, and he smirks, disappearing into his kitchen. "Could say that." You take a seat on his couch, looking around the apartment. He's decorated in a very Sunghoon  way â lots of black decorations and shelving on the exposed brick, an array of books on a shelf to the left of his desk and a record player. You look at his coffee table, the fashion magazines and editorials stacked high.
"You always snoop through people's things?" His voice rings behind you as he holds two glasses and a bottle of wine you're sure you've seen only in your father's reserve. You huff, "Well you leave me here to entertain myself, I'm bound to look around." "Valid. Come on." He tilts his head for you to follow him, your cheeks aflame as you do just that. He leads you down to his bedroom, a large bed with a black duvet in the middle of the room. More books, a few incense candles, a few figurines in the corner of his room. "I like what you've done with the place." "Thanks, it only took fucking forever to figure out what I wanted to do. I think the exposed brick makes for a bigger headache than those home bloggers make it out to be."Â
It makes you feel at ease, how easy conversation can be with Sunghoon. He doesn't make anything feel inorganic, but he also doesn't talk more than necessary in order to get his point across.
"How long were you with that guy, anyway? Here, put this on." He holds out a pair of sweatpants, which you take with a quizzical look. "Three years. Uh, Hoon, the point is to be naked here, not put on more clothes." "Is that how it was with him? You'd just show up and strip?" He rolls his eyes, digging a shirt out of his dresser for you. You feel your cheeks warm as he hands it to you, before giving you a glance. "Was it?" "...Kind of." You look at your feet, and he sighs. "Yeah, wellâŠI don't play that. Do you need help getting your dress off?" "Oh, yeah. Just the zipper." You turn, pulling your hair to the front. You feel his fingers graze your back, before he tugs the zipper down in one go. He snaps your bra strap playfully, "We can lose this, though." "Yah!" You swat his hand away, making him laugh as he turns away. "Do you want to watch something or just talk?" "We can watch something, whatever is fine. Just nothing scary, my room is spooky at night." You shudder as you undo your bra, folding it in your hand before tugging the shirt over your head. "Oh, do you intend on driving home after?" "Did you want me to stay?" Your words sound a bit bitter, and that only makes Sunghoon frown as he scours the selection on HBO from his bed. "Dude, the more things you say, the more scummy I realize this guy was to you. Next thing you know you'll tell me he never went down on you." You freeze, and Sunghoon gapes at you as you turn around, pulling the shirt down your torso. "Y/N, you've got to be kidding me." "No, he did a few times, I swear!" You try to defend him, but Sunghoon only scoffs out a laugh. "That's fucking insane. Like, actually insane." "Hoon, you're embarrassing me." You whine, and he only blinks. "Why would you be embarrassed that he didn't wanna eat you out? That in itself is embarrassing for him. Real men eat pussy, and they eat it with gusto." "Shut up." You cover your face with your hands as you hear him sigh. "I'm just saying. Now, come on. Either put the pants on or lie the hell down." You huff, shoving the pair of sweats on before joining him on his bed. This is normal, friends fuck all the time.
Except you and Sunghoon are not friends.
You must've spaced out, because the feeling of Sunghoon squeezing your knee makes you jolt. "What are you thinking about?" "Nothing." You lie, shaking your head. He hums, turning his attention to the random movie on the television. "You're a bad liar, you know?" "Am not." Scoffing, you turn to face him. Your knees hit his outer thigh as you turn, and he gives you a lazy smile. "You are. You were staring off into space and chewing on your cheek for like, five minutes. What's up?" You scrunch your nose, looking down at your hands as he tilts his head. "You can tell me, you know. I don't judge." "Don't you, though? I mean, I'm here after you absolutely dogged on my ex earlier." You snort, and he smiles. "I'm judging your ex, not you. Well, not right now at least. I will always dislike the fact that you think you deserved that treatment, let alone from a guy who probably couldn't even make you cum." Your eyes snap to his, shock across your face as he pinches the bridge of his nose with a sigh. "Babe, come on." "He was nice!" You whine, and Sunghoon just laughs in disbelief. "Don't laugh! It's not funny!" Your lip is jutted out in a pout, before Sunghoon maneuvers you onto his lap. He makes you move up closer, your ass resting high on his thighs. "He really didn't make you finish?" You groan, adjusting yourself to sit comfortably. "I mean, he did a few times. Just not as often as I would've liked. I don't want to talk about him." You rub your temples, Sunghoon's hands finding home on your hips. "Okay, we don't have to. Tell me what you like." "What I like?" You repeat, and he nods. "Yeah. LikeâŠpositions. Any kinks, anything I should know to make this the best experience possible."
"...Does it matter?" Your voice is meek, and he rolls his eyes. "Yes, it matters. I want you to feel good. If you don't know, I can figure it out. You just have to trust me." You feel your chest warm at his words, and you glance at his face as he speaks again. "We can go as slow as you want, this is about you." "But what about you?" You toy with the hem of your shirt, and he smiles. "I'll enjoy myself either way, don't worry about me." His hands squeeze your hips gently as he looks down at you. "You okay?" "I'm nervous." You mumble, looking away as he coos. "Baby, you don't need to be nervous. It's just me." His hand comes to hold your jaw gently, making you face him. He squeezes your cheeks gently, making your lips pucker.
"You're so pretty." He smiles as he compliments you, making you roll your eyes in embarrassment. "Stop." "Why? You are. Pretty little thing." He's teasing you, your hands now holding onto his wrist as he inches closer. "Should I kiss you?" "Yes." Your reply is more of a breath, and he chuckles. "Seriously, it's okay. I'm not going to hurt you, promise. Unless you're into that."
"Kiss me already." You groan, making him roll his eyes before closing the gap between you. His lips are soft and taste like cherry Chapstick. His hand lets go of your face, moving slightly down to the base of your neck. Your own hands move to fist his shirt as his teeth nip at your lower lip, a whimper from your throat making him move you impossibly higher on his lap. His other hand moves to the nape of your neck, tangling in your hair to hold you steady as his tongue slips into your mouth.Â
"You'll stay the night, right?" He pulls away from your lips, eyes searching your face for any sign of hesitation. You nod as best as you can with his hand in your hair, "Yeah. If you want me to." "I want you to." He whispers, before letting go of your hair. "Can we take this off?" He tugs at the shirt he gave you, and you move to tug it over your head. He lets you, watching the way your hair cascades down your back. His hands find home on your waist, his thumbs barely grazing the underside of your breasts as you look back at him, flinging the shirt somewhere behind you.
He doesn't say anything, only meeting your lips in a kiss. It's softer this time, but your tongue finds its way into his mouth gently. He sucks on it, hearing a low moan from you as your hips cant against his. "Sorry."Â
"No, don't be." He shakes his head, pressing chaste kisses to your lips. "Use me however you want, baby. That's what I'm here for."Â
"Butâ" "This is about you. Just let go." He meets your lips once more, kissing you deeply as his hands grip your hips tightly. He moves you against his hardening cock slowly, setting a gentle pace for you. You follow his lead, rutting against him as his hands move upward before you grab them and place them on your chest. He groans lowly into your mouth, thumbs grazing over your pebbled nipples as he drags his lips down your jaw, your soft whimpers filling the air as his teeth nip at your neck.
"S'fucking gorgeous." He murmurs against your skin, tracing his tongue down the gentle slope of your neck, a shudder running down your spine as he kisses down your chest. "Can I?" His doe eyes peer up at you though shaggy bangs, and you nod quickly. Your fingers card through his hair as his tongue flattens against your nipple as you groan.
"Feel good?" He mumbles against your skin. You only breathe out shakily as you nod, your lip bitten between your teeth as he nips and sucks his way across your chest, your nipples glistening with his spit. He scrapes his teeth against one gently, earning a guttural groan from your lips as he kisses up your chest. "Wanna taste you, angel. Can I?" Your pupils are blown as you look down at him, your fingers pushing his hair back as his hands dip below the sweatpants you're wearing. "Can I?" "Okay." Your voice is slightly raspy with lust, and he smiles softly before pressing a kiss to your lips. "We can stop anytime, just say the word."Â
You nod, moving off his lap. He lays you back on his pillows, kissing your lips softly before trailing down your body. "So beautiful, baby. Can't get enough of you." He kisses down your stomach, before his teeth catch on the waistband of the sweatpants you're wearing. He bites down carefully, pulling them down your legs as you cover your face with a whine. "Something wrong?" He calls, pulling them off your ankles and flinging them to the ground.
"No." You respond weakly, and he smirks as his fingers land on your thighs, pulling you closer to him. "You're lying." "You're just hot, okay?" You peek at him through your fingers, seeing him shake his head as he snaps the waistband of your underwear against your skin. You jolt as he smiles, before sinking to his stomach and spreading your legs. You hear a soft whisper of shit from his lips. "Sorry? Is something wrong?"
You try to move away, only for Sunghoon to hold your hips down. "You're fucking soaked, doll. Holy shit."Â
He doesn't give you a chance to respond, opting to press his face against the sticky fabric of your ruined underwear and inhale deeply, a whine from his throat hitting your ears as he noses at the fabric. "You're so fucking hot."
You feel his tongue before you reply, the underwear a useless attempt at a barrier as he finds your clit easily. Your thighs tense around his head, his preening at the taste of you just through the fabric is enough to make him cum in his pants. "HoonâŠ" You mewl, your fingers tugging at his hair to get his attention. He only hums in response.
"Take them off." Your whine is loud, and he hastily pulls your underwear down your plush thighs, throwing it over his shoulder as he dives back in, tongue lapping at your wet cunt like a man starved. You're a moaning mess as his pouty lips wrap around your clit, sucking gently as he pushes your thighs open further, working two fingers inside you carefully. He groans at the way you clench around them so tightly, your walls so warm and wet as he curls them into you.
"Taste so sweet, pretty. Would never give this up, ever." He murmurs against your clit, pressing wet kisses to it. You can't even respond, your eyes screwed shut as you cant your hips against his mouth harshly. "That's it, baby. Come on, give it to me." He's whining against your pussy, latching his lips to your clit as your thighs begin to tremble.
"H-Hold my hand." You mumble, and Sunghoon immediately laces his free hand with yours. "Need you to cum on my tongue, beautiful." His fingers find that spongy spot, making your soft belly cave in as your thighs close around his head. A choked moan leaves your lips as you coat his tongue and lips in your orgasm, your body trembling beneath him as you try to push his head away from you. "S'too much, Hoonie-" "One more, baby. You can give me one more." He bullies his shoulders through your thighs, moving to hover over you. He presses his wet lips to yours, your tongue attempting to collect any taste of you off of him. He lets you deepen the kiss, his hand snaking between your legs to rub teasing circles into your clit. Your mouth falls slack, your nails digging into his bicep. "One more, baby. Wanna feel you around me." "O-Okay."Â
He reaches over you to his nightstand, pulling the drawer open to find an empty box of condoms. "Fuck, wait. I thinkâ" "Want it raw." You mumble, eyes closed as your hands run under his shirt, fingers tracing circles into his softly chiseled abdomen. His eyes are wide, his hand coming to your face, stroking it gently. "Look at me. Are you sure?"
"Positive. Want it, Hoonie. Wanna feel full." You barely open your eyes as you nod, turning your head slightly to kiss his palm. He shivers slightly, closing his eyes to compose himself as he nods. "O-Okay. Alright." He straightens, pulling his shirt over his head and quickly pushing his sweats down. You don't bother to look down, knowing in your heart the stretch will be worth a thousand viewings. He pulls you to the edge of the bed by your thighs, carefully tucking a pillow under your hips as he rests your leg on his chest. He kisses your ankle softly, before running the leaking tip of his cock through your wet folds. He nearly buckles, the warmth almost debilitating as he eased himself into you. Your mewl is so soft he almost misses it, his eyes darting to your face as he slowly sheaths himself inside you, biting his lip so hard he's sure he'll draw blood. Your lips are so swollen from the kissing and biting that he can't help but lean over and kiss you gently, burying himself to the hilt inside you. Your soft whisper of fuck is against his lips. "Move, Hoon." "You gotta give me a second, baby." He whines into your neck, making you clench around him. "Fuck, fuck don't do that." His hips jerk involuntarily, earning a choked moan from you as your nails dig into his shoulder. He straightens himself, figuring if he's going to cum fast, he'd better make it worth your while. He pulls out almost entirely, pushing your thighs to your chest as he bullies his cock back into you. Your moans are so loud he's lost in them, your chants of yes, yes, right there so overwhelming for him as he tries his hardest to stave off his own orgasm.
"Feel so fucking good, baby. Shit." He whimpers into the air, his grip on your thighs bruising as you mewl beneath him, your hands finding his wrists. "Kiss me, Hoonie. Wan' a kiss.." He leans forward, the kiss a mess of teeth and tongue as he bottoms out inside you repeatedly. His tip is bullying your sweet spot relentlessly, making you whine into his mouth. "Want you to cum in me." You whisper, and he almost stops as the words hit his ears but your nails drag down his back. "Want you to fill me up, Hoonie. Please."
"Anything you want, fuck. I'll give you anything, baby." His voice is choked as he trails his lips down your neck, feeling your cunt flutter around him in that oh-so-familiar way. "Gonna cum for me? Gonna cream all over this dick?" You only whimper in response, your teeth sinking softly into his shoulder. He feels himself spill inside you at the sensation, a deep groan from his soul as you cum right after. He doesn't stop working the two of you through it, his hips bordering the two of you into overstimulation as you claw at him.
He feels his skin sticky as he rests his forehead on your shoulder, your fingers now flat against the muscle of his back as you breathe in deeply. You shift slightly beneath him, before patting his shoulder. "I don'tâŠI can't get up, I don't think. I can't feel my legs." You rasp, and he chuckles into your skin.
"Yeah, that's usually what's supposed to happen." He replies smugly, earning a sharp smack from your hand in the middle of his back. "Ouch! What the hell!" "I told you to stop making fun of me!" You huff, and he moves to look at you. "I'm not! Did I not just give you two mind blowing orgasms?"
"I wouldn't say mindblowingâ" He rolls his eyes as he covers your mouth. "I made you cum, which was the goal. Was it not?" "No, the goal was to get over my ex." You say, muffled by the palm of his hand. He ponders a bit, before looking down at you intently. "Well, are you?" You feel your cheeks flush as you look away. "Maybe. Might need to go again, don't know. Not fully convinced." "Not fully convinced, she says." He removes his hand from your mouth as he teases you gently, and you roll your eyes. "Okay, fine. You're good, you got me." You admit tiredly, and he smiles.
"For how long?" "What?" You look up at him, and he shrugs. "How long do I have you?" You let your eyes scan his face as he looks down at you with curiosity in his eyes. You scoff, an amused tone to your voice. "You like me." "Obviously." He rolls his eyes, "Otherwise I wouldn't have offered." "You sly little minx. Luring me in here with the premise of getting me over my ex, knowing I'm on the rebound." You poke his chest, and he scoffs. "Clearly, you like me too. Or else you could've absolutely dodged my offer." "Or maybe I think you're hot and wouldn't mind seeing you outside of the cute little necklaces my sister makes you wear." You tease, and he shrugs. "I'll take what I can get. Either way, do you feel better? Less thoughts about that idiot, more good feelings?" You nod, sitting up on your elbows. "Let me take you to dinner, Hoon." He blinks at you, before glancing at the clock on his nightstand. "It's two in the morning, babe." "Not right now. Later. After you're done babysitting." You say, and he raises his brows. "Are you sure?" "I wouldn't offer if I didn't want to." Your tone is pointed, and he scoffs. "You want me so fucking bad." "In your dreams. Get off me, I'm all sticky."
He does just that, and takes the most gentle care of you. He lets you lean against him in the shower, he shampoos your hair and steals kisses when you least expect it. He changes his sheets while you try to sit comfortably in his desk chair, complaining of sore hips and thighs as he smirks to himself. "So much for a rebound, huh?" He murmurs into your hair as you snuggle into his side, making you snort. "Go to sleep, Sunghoon. Goodnight."
"Goodnight, babe."
"Not your babe, Hoon."
"Not yet."

how to start reading again
from someone who was a voracious reader until high school and is now getting back into it in her twenties.
start with an old favourite. even though it felt a little silly, i re-read the harry potter series one christmas and it wiped away my worry that i wasn't capable of reading anymore. they are long books, but i was still able to get completely immersed and to read just as fast as i had years and years ago.
don't be afraid of "easier" books. before high school i was reading the french existentialists, but when getting back into reading, i picked up lucinda riley and sally rooney. not my favourite authors by far, but easier to read while not being totally terrible. i needed to remind myself that only choosing classics would not make me a better or smarter person. if a book requires a slower pace of reading to be understood, it's easier to just drop it, which is exactly what i wanted to avoid at first.
go for essays and short stories. no need to explain this one: the shorter the whole, the less daunting it is. i definitely avoided all books over 350 pages at first and stuck to essay collections until i suddenly devoured donna tartt's goldfinch.
remember it's okay not to finish. i was one of those people who finished every book they started, but not anymore! if i pick up a book at the library and after a few chapters realise i'd rather not read it, i just return it. (another good reason to use your local library! no money spent on books you might end up disliking.)
analyse â or don't. some people enjoy reading more when they take notes or really stop to think about the contents. for me, at first, it was more important to build the habit of reading, and the thought of analysing what i read felt daunting. once i let go of that expectation, i realised i naturally analyse and process what i read anyway.
read when you would usually use your phone. just as i did when i was a child, i try to read when eating, in the bathroom, on public transport, right before sleeping. i even read when i walk, because that's normally a time i stare at my screen anyway. those few pages you read when you brush your teeth and wait for a friend very quickly stack up.
finish the chapter. if you have time, try to finish the part you're reading before closing the book. usually i find i actually don't want to stop reading once i get to the end of a chapter â and if i do, it feels like a good place to pick up again later.
try different languages. i was quickly approaching a reading slump towards the end of my exchange year, until i realised i had only had access to books in english and that, despite my fluency, i was tired of the language. so as soon as i got back home i started picking up books in my native tongue, which made reading feel much easier and more fun again! after some nine months, i'm starting to read in english again without it feeling like a huge task.
forget what's popular. i thought social media would be a fun way to find interesting books to read, but i quickly grew frustrated after hating every single book i picked up on some influencer's recommendation. it's certainly more time-consuming to find new books on your own, but this way i don't despise every novel i pick up.
remember it isn't about quantity. the online book community's endless posts about reading 150 books each year or 6 books in a single day easily make us feel like we're slow, bad readers, but here's the thing: it does not matter at all how many books you read or what your reading pace is. we all lead different lives, just be proud of yourself for reading at all!
stop stressing about it. we all know why reading is important, and since the pandemic reading has become an even more popular hobby than it was before (which is wonderful!). however, there's no need to force yourself to be "a reader". pick up a book every now and then and keep reading if you enjoy it, but not reading regularly doesn't make you any less of a good person. i find the pressure to become "a person who reads" or to rediscover my inner bookworm only distances me from the very act of reading.

Cherry Bomb - tattoo parlor au anthology
MDNI | poly 141 x fem fat reader | masterlist
Part 2: Piercings and Puns
âPleeaaasse?â Johnny whines, pressing his hands together and giving you the biggest, sparkliest puppy dog look you could imagine.
You roll your eyes. âNo.â
âPlease! My two oâclock cancelled anâ Iâm so bored!â He flops over the counter, arms dangling right above the appointment books. You pointedly ignore the size of his biceps.
âIâm not letting you pierce me just because youâre bored.â You scoff. âNow shoo, Simonâs got an appointment coming in soon.â
âBut ye barely have any!â He argues. âAll Iâm askinâ fer is a wee ear. Noâ even a nipple!â
A shocked amalgamation of a bark, laugh, and scoff forces itâs way out of you at that. âItâs still a no!â
Johnny groans, but at least moves away from the counter. Unfortunately, he takes the opportunity to circle around behind you, pinching the cartilage of your ear. âCâmon, olâ rightyâs begginâ fer a conch.â
The intercom buzzes before you can respond. You swat Johnny away with one hand while pressing the speaker button with the other. âHello?â
âIâve goâ an appointment with Ghost.â A manâs voice drifts through. You blink dumbly for half a moment. You still havenât gotten used to Simonâs social media and booking moniker - he doesnât like giving his real name out much, apparently.
You buzz him in. Johnny is still hanging around the desk even when you leave to get Simon - making your way down the shirt hall to his studio. The large man stands in front of his stencil maker, back turned to you.
You knock on his door frame quietly. âYour guyâs here.â
âBe out in a moment.â He mumbles, focused on whatever heâs doing. You donât really know the steps by heart, but you do know that thereâs something so special about watching artists perform this repetitive song and dance. This rhythm they know by heart. Skilled hands enacting each step with careful precision.
Heâs so hard to read. Big and bulky but calm as the night sea. You want him to like you, but you know badgering him certainly wonât get you there. So, you turn on your heal and head back out. When you return to the front, Johnnyâs disappeared back into his room.
You suck your teeth and lean back in the desk chair, rolling your earlobe between your thumb and index finger. Itâs not a bad offer, really. You only have two earlobe piercings on each side. Wouldnât hurt to add a helix⊠youâve also wanted to get your thirds done for a while. Work your way up. You glance at the clock. Simon wonât be done with his client for at least an hour or so, and youâve balanced the registers for the moment. Both Kyle and John are out today, so they wonât need anything.
It wouldnât hurt⊠well, not metaphorically.
With a sigh you stand, wandering your way to Johnnyâs space. The doorâs wide open, and his head snaps up the moment you step close like a sixth sense. âTakinâ me up on my offer, bonnie?â
You roll your eyes. âGuess I am.â
âWhit dâye want?â Johnny practically skips around his station, pulling out wrapped, sanitized tools and placing them on a rolling tray. He pats the center of the padded table in the middle of the room.
âUh, been wanting to do my thirds for a while.â You shrug. âIf you have time for two.â
âOch, Iâve got all the time in the world fer ye, hen.â Johnny grins, pulling up in front of you and grabbing a marker.
Heâs so close as he places the marks on your ears, warm fingers feeling for the best spots. A thumb traces the back of your left ear down just to the beginning of your jaw briefly. Fuck, he smells good. Warm musk with hints of citrus around the edges. The way he tucks your hair back, hands framing your face as he lines up the dots, is so oddly intimate compared to the other times youâve gotten pierced. He chews at his lip in concentration, pulling at the scar on his chin while turning your head back forth a couple times.
âThink Iâve got it.â He grins and steps back. âHave a look.â
You take the mirror, casually checking but not paying too much attention. You trust him to do right by you. âLooks good.â
âAâright. Now the fun part.â He grins, tearing open the pack of tools and a two new needles.
âIs this fun?â You frown, squirming a little at the size of the needle.
âItâs always fun tâpoke a pretty girl.â
You roll your eyes, a growing theme between you two it seems. âOh, you thought that was real clever, didnât you? Had that in your pocket a while?â
âWhy donnae ye reach in anâ check?â He murmurs, leaning close to clamp your left ear. Youâre half tempted to tell him itâs mean to tease a fat girl like this - but you donât think he means anything like that by it. Heâs just a flirt by nature.
Before you can answer, he shoves the needle through your ear. You stiffen, a strained noise bubbling up out of your throat.
Johnny coos as he slips the earring into your ear. âOne doon.â
âUh-huh.â You sniffle. Not that it hurts badly, just a basic physical reaction. Johnny still gives you an empathetic smile.
The second goes quicker, Johnny locked in on his work. Itâs interesting, seeing how intense they get. You Is it odd to wish someone would look at you like that? With that much focus and passion?
âThere ye goâŠgood girl.â He murmurs in that deep rumble that would have you squirming if you didnât still have a needle through your ear. âDoinâ so good fâme...â
âYouâre a devil, MacTavish.â
Johnny just chuckles, knowing full well exactly what heâs doing. He steps back to look at the final result after slipping the second stud into your ear. They feel hot - like two small ovens on either side of your head.
âIf it werenât for the piercings Iâd think ye were blushing, hen.â
âYouâre gonna get yourself slapped one of these days.â You scoff, sliding off the table.
âWouldnnae be the first time.â
You find yourself rolling your eyes for the millionth time.
You grunt, squatting low in an attempt to pick the last of the parlor trash. Itâs not that you mind, trash was part of your duties from the start, but holy shit do these boys put bricks in their bins? Youâd think tattoos would make light trash. Especially after the sharps are disposed of separately.
âSolid?â Simon appears in the hall, eyes flicking over you. You still canât tell how he feels about you. Neutral, you suppose. At least thatâs all you can glean from behind his seemingly permanent black surgical mask.
âYa.â You sigh, letting the bag drop and leaning back to stretch. âJust heavy. Swear yâall arenât throwing rocks in these just to fuck with me?â
You give him a grin. Simon just cocks an eyebrow - exaggerated by the small piercing lining it. You think, maybe the slight shaking of his shoulder is a laugh. In combination wonât he crinkles in the corners of his eyes. Maybe not.
ââere.â Simon grunts, closing the short distance between you quickly before snatching up the bag like it weighs almost nothing.
You stutter, following after him toward the back exit. âYou donât have to-â
âNot a problem.â He grunts, tossing the thing over the side of the bin. He quietly leads you back inside, locking the door behind you âJohnny goâ you already?â
When you frown in confusion he points to his ears.
âOh! Yeah.â You shrug, leading the way back to front desk to finish up your closing duties. âHeâs insistent. Iâd wanted them for a while anyway so I figured thereâs no harm.â
âGive âim an inch...â He sighs, pointing to the black bar bridge piercing at the apex of his nose. âSomehow talked me into this shite.â
You tilt your head. âYeah? I think it suits you.â
It really does. You canât see most of his nose form under the mask but the arc of it leading up to bridge is strong, the piercing settling into the space nicely.
Simon breaks the silence. âYou about done?â
âAlmost. Just gotta check the ATM against the book real quick.â You nod.
He stares down at you for a moment, glancing out the semi-opaque window, now black with the night sky. There arenât many street lamps on this side of town. You can only see a very faint glow from the one down by the car park.
âIâll wait.â Simon settles his wide frame into Kyleâs usual chair.
âOh! No you donât have to! Iâm sure youâre tired-â
âWouldnât feel right leavinâ you alone in the dark.â He cuts you off.
âItâs not a far walk-â
He scoffs. âDefinitely not leaving you to walk alone.â
You sink your teeth into your lip, debating briefly on arguing. Based on his comfortable lean and crossed arms, itâs probably best to just let him walk you home. He looks so wide like that, veins prominent across his forearms. Fuck, you gotta find a boyfriend or booty call or something in this city. Anything to stop the temptation to stare at your hot coworkers.
It doesnât take long to finish up your final chores. You turn all but one light off, wiring down from the bright overheads glaring at you all day. You glance over at Simon a few times while locking up the ATM, his covered face lit up by the light of his phone.
He leads you out of the shop once youâre finished, locking the door behind you and trying it a couple times to be sure. âWhich way?â
âUh, down here. Itâs only twenty minutes.â You murmur, feeling guilty that youâve kept him out extra late. You shove your hands in your hoodie pockets as you walk, the only sound on the street made up of your footsteps and some distant cars.
âWhat falls but never gets hurt?â Simon asks suddenly.
You frown. âHuh?â
âWhat falls but never gets hurt?â
You squint at him, trying to decipher anything from his face in the low light. You get nothing but a calm, warm gaze resting on you.
His eyes crinkle in the corners again. âRain.â
âPffft-â You choke, caught off guard. âThatâs such a lame pun.â
âOh? Iâve got a better one.â Simon says, a smirk in his tone. âWhyâd the mother clam scold her children?â
You chew your lip. God, youâre too literal to be clever enough for stupid puns and riddles. It doesnât help that your head is spinning from this brick shithouse, incredibly attractive and intimidating man spitting popsicle puns at you.
âThey were being shellfish.â
âOh fuck off!â You shove at his arm playfully without thinking. He gives, letâs you push him slightly before you stiffen. âS-sorry! I donât-â
âNothinâ to apologize for.â The corners of his eyes crinkle deeper. Yeah, definitely a smile. You answer it with one of your own.

Just saw a post that was basically "Hey off of the internet people usually aren't so crazy antisemitic and most of my day to day interactions as a visible Jew are normal, everything is gonna be ok" and I'm making a new post to not derail, but...
I'm super glad, obviously, that this is the case for many of you. But I do think we should be ringing the alarm bells. Because while you enjoy your grocery trips and post office in relative peace (as you ought to), here is a VERY incomplete list of things I have dealt with in the last 11 months.
-assaulted on my way to class, followed, spit on repeatedly (magen David necklace)
-professor took me outside of class and told me I needed to denounce my Judaism (I mentioned in passing my dad's family in an anthropology class)
-same professor refused to accept my final paper for reasons that did not match up with paper, email full of dogwhistles
-same professor told everyone to attend the protests and "teach those zionists to know their place" she is a Black Latina young professor. Yep.
-another professor straight up refused to accept any assignments that mentioned Jewishness (they were assignments about our families). Gave a student who submitted nothing except a picture of a Palestinian flag full marks. Failed me. I am an all As student, btw. Forced to drop.
-the chair of the anthropology department threw my complaints wabout said professors away without due process. His social media is full of blood libel.
-had to miss my finals as I could not physically get to them due to the protests
-followed and harassed in stores
-synagogue was vandalized multiple times
-called a kike while things were thrown at me
-protestors stood outside of my apartment patio with final solution signs
-new apartment, away from campus: friends of roommates harassed me constantly, to the point I could not use common spaces. Roommates told me that's his right because it's his "political view." He didn't even live there.
-new roommate moved in, less than 48 hours before she attempts to stab me, after learning I eat kosher style. "...kosher? kosher?! FUCK YOU" stab stab, etc. Bitch that was my good knife.
-the other roommates tell me to gtfo of the home I'm renting, keeping my rent ("you people can afford to lose money") and destroy a good portion of my belongings while cursing to me random nonsense about Israel. The police took 25 minutes to get there. We live in the middle of the city.
-fun fact: I had never mentioned my political stance to these people and it's not on my face-out social media (very bare bones profiles)
-been disbelieved by everyone I told this to including the police, my school, the leasing company, and my now ex best friend of 7 years
-cursed at in a store when I asked if there was a kosher section
-told nobody likes Jews because we bring down the vibe and have a victim complex. My knuckles are healing just fine after that, btw, thank you for asking! She is not.
I don't know how to request the 7th off from my school without basically incriminating myself with a threat of violence. There is no world where I just sit there when a classmate says "happy October 7th."
Hope this helps.

a moment to check the gears and cogs
feel like i want to talk a little on the message of a recent post because i think it is an important point. when i say that you do not need to QUALIFY OR DEFEND your love of tinglers or my work in general, i am pointing out an interesting social anomaly that happens with my art and with queer art.
as an autistic buckaroo i notice patterns, and on social media i see them a lot. little phrases that come up again and again with my art. âyes THAT chuck tingleâ âits ACTUALLY goodâ âmy favorite author i have never readâ âso bad its goodâ. these are always added after a POSITIVE comment about me
they also all have something in common. they are trying to distance the posters SINCERE JOY and give them an out socially. it is very very very subtle, but they are all saying âyes i like this but here is a sliver of acknowledgment that it is also weird or bad or ironic. in not REALLY fully in'
essentially these are added because it means the poster can escape their very real joy if needed. try applying these phrases to any other popular author. its much more subtle with the first two: âi liked all fours by miranda july, yes THAT miranda july. its ACTUALLY goodâ. what does this imply?
the other examples are a little more blatant but lets try them with other authors anyway. imagine saying âyoure my favorite author i have never readâ to stephen king. would you EVER say that to someone? what does that imply? how about 'i love your books theyre so bad theyre good'. horrifyingly rude
lets dive into saying 'CHUCK TINGLE is my favorite author i have never readâ sounds unusual when substituting other authors because theyre usually not queer or autistic or making outsider art. to be blunt, why CHUCK gets it all the time is because it really means 'i like chuck tingle but im not gayâ
while we have mostly culturally evolved past the idea that saying âno homoâ is some kind of joke, that FEELING is still around. it has just burrowed a little deeper. honestly it might never go away, or at least take centuries. remember these people GENUINELY LIKE MY BOOKS but feel they MUST qualify
should also be pointed out that LEFT and LIBERAL people are the ones who say this stuff to chuck. they do not MEAN to harm, and if you ask them directly how they feel about queer or neurodivergent people they would not express the same opinion as their subliminal comments might imply
the final elephant trotting by is while some of this is homophobia and fear of a neurodivergent other, it is also just plain old IRONY POISONING. its conditioning from being raised on an internet where sincerity was âcringe' and loving something was a weakness or joke. these problems work in tandem
so whats the point? what can we do? first of all, just recognizing these patterns is a start. i didnt HAVE to write all of this today but i think its important to be aware and to look inward and think about the gears and cogs that churn behind the things we say. NEXT step is trying to push past it
if you have done these things in the past, i want you to know i am NOT AT ALL UPSET. i am not mad or hurt and i do not think any less of you. you can trot by my side any day and you are trying your best to prove love. we are ALL just tryin our best, just consider this a friendly chat between buds
proving love can happen in BIG WAYS and it can happen in SMALL WAYS that we barely see. just take a moment and think âWHY am i saying this? WHY am i in this pattern to distance myself from outsider or queer art?â a little moment of consideration goes a LONG way buckaroos. LOVE IS REAL

â volleyball superstar and your personal hell hwang hyunjin proposes a trade-off you can't refuse: his matchmaking services for a passing anthropology grade. the plan is foolproof in theory; in practice, it is something else entirely.
wordsă»15.2k
pairingă»volleyball player!hyunjin x tutor!reader (gn)
genresă»college!au, sports!au, fake enemies to friends to lovers, fluff, humor, hurt/comfort, slice of life, mutual pining, slow burn. two polar opposites sharing one soul. a seungjin fic if u squint. loosely inspired by the manga/anime haikyuu!!
warningsă»mentions of anxiety, fear of failure, heartbreak, loneliness, and self-image. course language and callous banter (as always) ft. suggestive flirting and one kms joke. some of the referenced players and coaches are real; this fic is not.

a/nă»writing this felt like returning to my roots tbh. i love volleyball and i love sports aus and i love, love hwang hyunjin. thank u to my sahar for bringing this fic to life with me, as always; i can no longer write for him without also writing for you. i hope u guys enjoy reading this as much as i adored writing it. happy late birthday, our jinnie, our hyunjin, our forever ace; you are so unbelievably loved âĄ
âNot a word out of you,â you say, tossing your backpack onto the floor of the lecture hall with a heavy-handed flick. âIâm serious.â
Hyunjin glances up at you with a frown. âWhen did people stop saying good morning?â
Your lack of an immediate comeback tells him the situation is dire. He observes you for a moment, his mouth falling open, hanging still, then curving into a slow, serpentine smile.
âLook at me.â
âNo.â
âLook at me.â
âNo.â
âPlease, angel.â
âNo! Leave me alone.â
Hyunjin slumps back into his seat, thinking hard. The solution occurs to him with a poke of his tongue into his cheek. âCoffee on me for a week.â
At this, your hands stop rummaging in your bag. You cock your head, your interest piqued. Got you.Â
When you finally humor him and turn around, youâre flinching like youâre in pain, eyes closed and breath held and all. He giggles and leans in for a closer look. Tendrils of your body spray reach him from here, floral and light like a tropical coastline. He couldâve counted your eyelashes if he wasnât so flummoxed by the state of your forehead.
âWhat the hell did you do?â
âTried to cut my own bangs,â you sigh. âIt didnât go very well and now I look like Rock Lee.â
Hyunjin lets out a forceful laugh. âYouâve seen Naruto?â
You open your eyes. Only then does Hyunjin remember how little distance he left between your faces, when heâs staring straight into them and all the strange, starry speckles they hold.
The air between you curdles like sour milk.
Things are awkward between you often, heâs realized recently. Whatâs more, he didnât think he was capable of being awkward with anyone anymore until he met you. It was your ill-fated seat that he chose to sit next to on the first day of ANTH 111, your ill-fated lap onto which he chose to spill his Americano, and the rest was history (or, in this case, anthropology). His tongue ends up in sailorâs knots with every smart-aleck comment and pitiful laugh youâve given him since. Maybe thereâs more to it, maybe there isnâtâHyunjin doesnât think about it much. He doesnât like thinking in general.
You pull away from each other in unison. You clear your throat, glancing elsewhere.Â
âOf course Iâve seen Naruto,â you quip, and everything is normal again. âWhy do you seem surprised?â
âBecause youâre so scholarly.â
âI am not scholarly.â
He raises an eyebrow. âYou go to a park to play chess with old people on weekends.â
âI need to get my steps in somehow.â
âYou didnât know what Urban Dictionary was until I told you to look upââ
âGod, I learned so much about you that day."
âYour favorite social media platform is Quizlet,â he bursts, exasperated. âQuizlet.â
âIt is not.â An introspective pause. âOr is it?â
âI wouldnât be surprised.â Hyunjin throws his feet up on the chair below him, jabs in your direction with a bandaged finger. âThere is no way you enjoy watching 2D men beat each other up in your free time. I donât buy it.â
âHonestly, I thought youâd have more to say about my current appearance than my hobbies.â
He does, though. Matter of fact, heâs been curating a list since this conversation started: Vector from Despicable Me, Dora the Explorerâs hot older sibling, Spock. You face-planted into a lawnmower. You mistook a paper shredder for a hat. It goes on.
But then his head turns. Your eyes meet again. Heâs reminded that itâs hard to sustain an inner monologue and look at you at the same time, Vector resemblance and all.
He reaches up, nudges a lock of your hair over a centimeter or so, and gives the patch of forehead a gentle flick.
âWatermelon,â he mumbles with a sickening smile.
You divert your attention to your lecture notes with a disappointed click of your tongue. âYouâre getting soft.â
He spends the entire lecture daydreaming about tropical coastlines.
âI only get coffee from that one place on the east side of campus, by the way,â you say as youâre strolling out the building together, âand I get it a very specific way. Can you handle it?â
âYour faith gets me out of bed in the morning,â Hyunjin deadpans. âIâll handle it, love. Text me your order.â
All of a sudden, you position your hands close to your stomach, the lapels of your jacket casting them in shadow. Your fingers begin to move in a sequence that heâd recognize anywhere.
âBody flicker jutsu,â you whisper, and then youâre scurrying off without another wordâbut you do glance back at him to gauge his response. Your smile is purely effulgent, your laugh but a faint sigh against the main quadâs busy thrum.
Hyunjin gapes at your retreating figure for so long that phosphenes start prancing around his field of view. Then he heads to the gym. His heart is pounding against his ribs like a battering ram.
âHwang, I need you in my office.â
Hyunjin stops lacing up his shoes to see Coach Bang standing on the courtâs sideline with a grim air about him. He glances at his captain, confused.
âDonât look at me,â Minho says mid-stretch. âGodspeed.â
âThanks, cap.â Useless.
Head volleyball coach Christopher Bangâs workspace reminds Hyunjin of a morgue. Itâs all fluorescent lights and spotless white walls, the only decorative fixture a picture of his siblings, parents, and dog in front of the Sydney Opera House, framed and facing him atop his desk. Hyunjin once snuck the thing into the bathroom, an innocent plot to satiate his curiosity, and promptly discovered the manâs propensity for violence. Heâs packing beneath those dry-cleaned polos, by the way.
Hyunjin closes the door and takes a seat. Bang taps a knuckle against the tempered glass of his monitor. âYou can read, right?â
âYes, coach,â he sighs. Everyoneâs expectations for him are subterranean.
From: Park Jinyoung «[email protected]» To: Bang âChristopherâ Chan «[email protected]» Subject: Not good See email from Hwangâs antopology professor below . He submitted the complete script of the Trolls movie instead of his mid term paper and now heâs failing the class . Not good . Sort out ASAP JP Sent from my iPad
Bang snatches up his mouse and scrolls, his ears turning scarlet. âWrong email.â
âYep.â
From: Kim Kyeyoung «[email protected]» To: Park Jinyoung «[email protected]» Subject: Regarding Hwang Hyunjin To Director of Athletics Park, I am writing to inform you that, as of yesterday, Mr. Hwang Hyunjin has a D- (64.9%) in ANTH 111: Cultural Anthropology, due to his submission of the complete script of a kidsâ movie instead of his midterm paper. It is disappointing to see Mr. Hwang trivialize and ridicule my class to such a degree. Please see to it that he reorganizes his priorities lest his Student-Athlete Participation Agreement do so for him. Regards, Kim Kyeyoung Professor of Anthropology
âThatâs bullshit!â
âWeâre in agreement there.â Bang folds his arms over his chest, throws his foot over his knee. âDo you know what your Student-Athlete Participation Agreement says?â
âDoes anyone?â Hyunjin scoffs. Bang whips out a form and brings it to eye level, the thing covered from top to bottom in microscopic Times New Roman. âNo way you just had that.â
âI had it delivered ten minutes ago,â Bang confesses, then clears his throat and begins to recite. âAll student-athletes must complete the academic term with a C or higher in all courses, should they wish to continue their participation in athletics thereafter.â
Hyunjin stiffens. âWhat the fuck? Iâve never heardââ
âIf any Department of Athletics personnel,â Bang continues, raising his voice, âhave reason to believe that a student-athlete will not be able to satisfy this requirement, they are encouraged to utilize resources such as academic advising or peer tutoring in guiding said student-athlete back onto the correct path.â
He shoves the piece of paper across his desk. âRead that name aloud for me.â
Hyunjin stares at the signature at the bottom of the page, scrawled so carelessly that most of it deviates away from its designated line. There is a rare hollowness in his chest that he recognizes as anxiety. With it comes a glimpse of a life without volleyball, the question of what little of him would remain.
âHwang Hyunjin,â he says under his breath.
The office goes silent. Bang tucks the form back into his drawer. It closes with a gentle click.
Then comes the yelling.
âThe Trolls movie? Trolls?! Are you fucking with me, Hwang?â
âIt was a cultural reset! The pinnacle of modern media! Howâs that for anthropology?â
âBAD!â Bang explodes, gesturing to the email emphatically. âVERY, VERY BAD!â
Hyunjin slumps over, dejected.
âYouâve never had trouble with school before.â He leans over his desk imposingly. âWhat the hell happened this semester? What changed?â
Nothing is the first answer that comes to mind, but Hyunjinâs pulse spikes like a lie detector. Upon the inside of his eyes replays a scene of a certain someone with watermelon bangs doing teleportation jutsu at him from a few yards away, wearing a smile made of some kind of space dust that astronomists havenât discovered yet.
He grits his teeth, annoyed. This is what happens when he thinks.
âBeats me,â he fibs. âTypical junior year stress, maybe.â
âDoes any of it have to do with Piazza?âÂ
Hyunjin shudders.
It just might, actually.
Modesty has no place in the career heâs had: high school national champion turned ace hitter in both the South Korean U21 roster and regular rotation for Seoul National University, the best collegiate volleyball team in the country. His name has lived at the top of ranking lists and the center of gold medals since he turned old enough to qualify for them; the press believes him the instigant of South Koreaâs imminent volleyball revolution. Itâs a mouthful, he knows.
It was never a question that he would go professional; the question was who he should talk to and where he would go.
At the start of the school year, Bang, acting in place of the agent he was advised to find and never bothered to, gave him a list of people to reach out to. On the very top was none other than Roberto Piazza, the chairman and head coach of Allianz Milano, one of the most eminent club teams in the worldâand current home to Hyunjinâs personal idol, outside hitter Ishikawa Yuki.
Hyunjin thought his poor coach had finally succumbed to his old age. The thought of stepping onto the same court as Ishikawa felt sacrilegious, let alone donning the red, white, and navy blue of Allianz Milano with him. But Bang slapped him on the back of the neck and reminded him that going professional was equal parts preparation and opportunity; he was never going to know the answers to questions he didnât ask. Hyunjin was coerced to fire off an introductory email despite his reservations.
Piazza replied within the week.
For the last five months, Hyunjin has been fighting with tooth and nail to manage his expectations. He scrolls past the teamâs social media posts like they burn his eyes. He replies to Piazzaâs emails right before working out with Changbin under the assumption that whatever the shredded libero does to him will eviscerate his brain. If his world is made of dreams, this is the one at its very core, imbued with destructive potential the second it became attainable.
But thatâs the last five months. The last five weeks have been you kicking him in the shin because heâs laughing (or trying to make you laugh) and the professor is staring; you listening to him rant and rave about volleyball when he knows you couldnât care less about the sport; you relaying the contents of your class readings like hot gossip, your eyes wild and hands flying around because you canât contain your excitement. You, you, you.
He cards a hand through his air, regaining focus. âYou know how I feel about Piazza.â
âExpect the worst, hope for the best.â Bangâs chair skids backwards as he stands up. âI think itâs a good approach.â
Suddenly, he is directly in front of Hyunjin, low enough to meet his eyes. His hands rest upon his shoulders firmly.
âBut hope is hungry, and it will consume you if you let it,â he says. âDo not let it, Hyunjin. Iâm not asking.â
Even while being squeezed to a pulp and regarded with the cold intensity of a statue, Hyunjin canât help but feel anchored, somehow, to the floor of this miserable office. Protected.
Bang lets go of him. âIâm not asking you to find a tutor by the end of the week, either.â
Hyunjin groans. âYeah, yeah. Iâm on it.â
A set of bandaged fingers appear in your periphery to place a paper cup onto your laptop. Accompanying the smell of fresh coffee is that of smoky rose, as decidedly douchey as ever.
âI thought you said your order was complicated.â
You look up from your phone to see Hyunjin plop into the adjacent seat. His long, caramel-colored hair is damp and unstyled in the aftermath of a morning shower, droplets of water pearling on the lapels of a navy blue windbreaker, layered over a white long sleeve. You recognize the outfit by now as game gear.
âWas it not?â You ask.
âIt was an Americano, love. I walked up to the cashier and placed an order for an Americano.â
âWell, I wasnât sure if you could handle that much.â He flips you off as you squint at the cup. âSomeone wrote their number on the lid, by the way.â
âWhat? Really?â
âNo.â
He shoves you hard enough for your upper body to drape over the opposite armrest; youâre still cackling by the time youâve straightened up again.
âWhy did you get this, anyway?â Hyunjin grumbles. âI thought you had a sweet tooth.â
âI do, but you donât.â
Only then does the fool understand that you had no intention of charging him in coffee just for a haircut reveal. He takes back the coffee hesitantly.
âThanks,â he says at last. âNice of you.â
âI know, right? Hated it,â you respond, and he almost chokes on his first sip.
You almost choke on nothing when Kim Seungmin materializes in the aisle adjacent. He holds out a hand in Hyunjinâs direction. âYo.â
Hyunjin dabs it up mid-sip. âI fully forgot you were in this class.â
âWell, Iâm due for my weekly appearance.â Seungmin slips into the seat directly below you, glancing at you over his shoulder. âHey, Y/N.â
âHi,â you say, somehow managing to stumble over the single syllable the word has. You thank your lucky stars that you fixed your hair yesterday.
You like Kim Seungmin. Not just in the cutesy, crushy way, but in the âI would relinquish all of my rights for youâ way where you spend every waking moment cursing out whatever stroke of misfortune placed Hyunjin in the seat next to you instead of him. Heâs funny, gorgeous, and talentedâa vocal performance major with a student-athlete contractâand you think your infatuation is more than justified. Hyunjin thinks itâs hilarious.
You side-eye your blonde adversary, prepared to see one of three things: a suppressed laugh, a dramatic eye-roll, or a mature kissy face that usually results in the first option. Youâre met with something far more worrisome.
Heâs thinking.
That canât be good.
Suddenly, his phone screen lights up with a text that temporarily wipes the conspiratorial gleam from his eye. Hyunjin scans it over and groans. âCan this guy do his fucking job?â
âHe wouldnât have to if you didnât quit,â Seungmin answers. âIâll never forget you, Manager Hwang.â
âShut up.â You peer at Hyunjin, silently requesting an explanation. âOur captain is forcing us to help him look for a new team manager. We need one for playoffs because of some stupid U-League ruleâSeung, why do you look morose?â
âIâm mourning.â Seungmin does look morose indeed. âHyunjin committed larceny last year and our coach punished him by making him our team manager for the rest of the season. It was so funny.â
Hyunjin slides down his seat. âIt was the worst experience of my life.â
Neither man seems inclined to elaborate on the mention of larceny. You choose to digress. âCan I ask why?â
âHe had to be responsible,â Seungmin whispers. âFor other people.â
The top of Hyunjinâs head stops right next to your armrest. You reach over and pat his hair in faux sympathy. âPoor thing.â
âHardass refused to do it again this year, so now weâre recruiting.â Seungmin props an elbow upon the back of his chair, looks at you contemplatively. âI donât suppose you have four hours to spare every day.â
Hyunjin scoffs from below you. Loudly. âThis one? Team manager?â
âI can see it.â
âI can see killing myself, maybe.â
The next time you reach for him is to hit his forehead. A crisp smack resounds around the barren lecture hall. Hyunjin cusses into his seat cushion.
âSeems like a great candidate to me,â Seungmin muses, and the warm smile he gives you mirrors onto your face before you can think better of it. God, itâs pretty. You wonder how it would feel pressed against your own.
Hyunjin is now completely out of sight and halfway onto the floor. âI miss when you didnât come to class, Seungmin.â
Eighty minutes later, youâve just emerged from the classroom when Seungmin calls out to you. You come to such a sudden halt that Hyunjin almost trips over you, but you barely notice him stumble, utterly enraptured by the hand Seungmin brings to the strands of hair by your ear, the fingers that dust your cheek as they pluck a small piece of lint from out of the tresses.
âSorry.â He flicks it away with a sheepish smile. âI couldnât unsee it.â
You manage to thank him just before your whole body ceases to function. Hyunjin sidesteps the two of you, yawning.
Seungmin excuses himself not too long after you reach the main quad. You also turn to leave, sparing Hyunjin a curt farewell in the process. He hooks his pointer finger around the handle at the top of your backpack and lugs you backwards with infuriating ease.
âI didnât like that at all,â you say.
âI donât care. I have something to tell you.â
âYou have a kid, donât you?â
âWhaâhuh? Who do you think I am?â
âThe one-night-standâs poster child. The champion of the contraception industry.â
âYeah, contraception industry. Itâs right there in the name.â
You canât argue with that. âWhat do you have to tell me?â
A shadow of hesitation flits across Hyunjinâs face. Your smile falters. Is it possible that youâre about to have a serious conversation with him for the first time? Maybe you shouldâve saved the secret son bit for another time.
âIâm failing anthro.â
So much for a serious conversation.Â
âCome again?â
He repeats the mystifying statement.
âYouâre joking.â The look on his face says otherwise, though, and your eyebrows disappear into your hair. âYouâre failing anthro?â
âI just said that, yes.â
âYouâre failing anthropology?â
âMhm.â
âJust so weâre clearâyouâre failing Introduction to Cultural Anthropology?â
âYes. Iâm glad youâre having fun.â
This is the best day of your life. âI didnât even know that was possible.â
âYeah, well, our professor has no media literacy,â he mutters.
âWhat?â
âNothing.â Hyunjin clears his throat. âAnyways, I was thinkingââ
âWow! Congratulations. Thatâs a bigâoomfââ
Hyunjin puts his entire hand over your face. Your mangled noises of protest go unacknowledged.
âI was thinking,â he continues, pushing your head around like a stick shift, âyou and I can work out some kind of deal.â
You shove his wrist off you with a revolted groan. âI think I just ate some athletic tape.â
âHappens. You wanna hear the deal or not?â
âDoes it involve ingesting more sports equipment?â
âDo you want it to?â
âJust tell me the deal, boy.â
âAlright.â He takes a deep breath. âIf you help me pass this class, Iâll set you up with Seungmin.â
Your head performs a triple-axel on your neck. You are unable to respond for what feels like multiple hours. Finally: âIâm gonna need you to elaborate.â
âOn which part?â
âAll of them. Everything.â
Hyunjin sighs, then scans the courtyard. His gaze settles on the student union a little ways off. âAre you hungry?â
You pick up a sandwich and a smoothie in a state of nervous stupor. One would think itâs the prime minister youâre about to have lunch with and not an imbecilic left-side hitter eating from three different entrees at the same time.
Heâs chosen a table a few yards away from a planter of flowering cherry blossom trees. You feel jealous eyes on the side of your face as you take a seat across from Hyunjin, but they donât know that his telephone pole legs still bump against yours even with them drawn as close to your body as anatomically possible. Or that heâs drawing up a literal Ponzi scheme on your sandwich wrapper. You wager youâve had better company.
âYou like anthropology. I like listening to you talk about anthropology.â He traces over the wrapperâs left corner. âAnd I kinda want you to boss me around. That weird?â
âYes, definitely,â you mumble around a mouthful of bread. âGo on.â
âConclusion one: you should be my tutor.â He taps in place as if applying a finishing touch, then swaps to the opposite side. âYou also like my teammate, but heâs neck-deep in volleyball and music this semester, which makes him hard to get a hold ofâfor most people.â
âLet me guess. Not for you.â
âTen points to Ravenclaw.â His British accent is nightmarish. âSeung and I live in the same building. We get dinner when we go back from practice together. Conclusion two: you should come with us.â
âTo dinner or to practice?â
âTo both. Which brings us to my third and final conclusionââ
He slams a fist onto the center of the wrapper.
ââyou should manage our team.â
âI knew it!â You slam the table as well, your smoothie wobbling upon impact. âYouâre trying to swindle me! You canât pay for my labor with more labor. What do you take me for?â
âItâs not labor, dumbass! Ask our last manager! He didnât do shit!â
âYeah? Who was your last manager?â
âMe!â
Oh, right. âBut you hated it!â
âI hate everything that isnât playing volleyball. Try again.â
You fold your arms over your chest. âYou said youâd kill yourself if I managed you.â
Hyunjin starts balling up your sandwich wrapper. âItâs true. I thought about you and my coach getting along and promptly got a rash. But it makes so much sense: you do whatever you want during practice, tutor me afterwards, and then you and Seung can eyefuck over ramen or something. My coach hops off my dick, you hop on Seungâsââ
âSTOP!â A girl drops her receipt not too far away, startled by your outburst. âStop right there. I get it. Stop.â
âItâs a good plan.â He slings the paper ball towards the nearest trash can. It drops into the hole without so much as a brush against the rim. âYou know it is.â
Youâre loath to admit that you do. âWhen did you even come up with all this?â
He flicks a thumb in the direction of your anthropology class. No fucking wonder heâs failing.
âWhat is this, mock trial?â
The owner of this voice is the third man youâve seen today donning that navy windbreaker, white long-sleeve combo. He has a face that reminds you of your neighborâs cat from back home, sleek and sharp and only slightly sinister. Thereâs a dash of humor in his expression as he approaches your table like heâs enjoying the company of a court jester.
âSlamming tables like fuckinâ tariff lawyers,â the cat-man hums, lifting a hand in Hyunjinâs direction. âI could see it from all the way inside.â
âCaptain!â Hyunjin crows, dabbing him up without missing a beat. They really do that like breathing. âJust the man I was hoping to see.â
âReally? I thought youâd be avoiding me like the rest of our homunculus team.â
âI would never.â
âYou did. Yesterday. When you saw me and started running in the opposite direction.â He pauses for emphasis. âAs fast as possible.â
âWell, that was yesterday. Today is a new day.â Hyunjin tosses you a proud glance. âAnd today, I bring you a new team manager.â
You stiffen. âI havenâtââ
âIs that so!â When the stranger smiles at you, you feel the same satisfaction you did every time the cat let you scratch her on the chin. âMusic to my ears. Whatâs your name, cutie?â
You catch Hyunjinâs eye across the table; he nods enthusiastically as if saying go on, then. You briefly picture yourself strangling him with his own athletic tape. You then picture yourself hopping on Seungminâsâ
Rigidly, you throw a hand out to the cat-man, your face aflame.
âY/N,â you grumble. âIâm looking forward to working with you.â
He shakes on it heartily. âLikewise. Iâm Minho. Welcome to the team.â
âYes, welcome to the team,â Hyunjin parrots, looking positively jolly. You gnash your teeth together so hard your jaw throbs.
Heâs lucky that his proposal holds so much water. Heâs lucky that you donât plan to strangle him until after you try that eyefucking thing.
You do kick him under the table, though.
The team has five weeks to prepare for the Korean University League, the biggest college-level volleyball tournament in the country. You have five days to learn how the hell athletic tape works. You canât tell which is the bigger endeavor.
âIâm going to cause him irreversible skeletal damage,â you tell Changbin.
The teamâs libero is twice as kind as he is talented, a full-time sweetheart working part-time at the universityâs sports medicine clinic. Only your first week on the job and youâve already decided heâs the only person on Earth you would permit to usher you through the gym at 6:45 A.M., a roll of athletic tape pressed to your back like a pistol.
âYou will not,â Changbin answers. âOne, because this wonât involve his skeleton, and two, because I wouldnât ask you to help if it did.â
âYouâve misunderstood me,â you return as the two of you stop in front of an examination room. âI want to cause him irreversible skeletal damage.â
âOh.â He opens the door with a frown. âOh dear.â
Inside, Hyunjin is sitting cross-legged on top of a taping table, fitted in a loose gray tee and athletic shorts. He watches in pessimistic silence as you enter the room and beeline straight towards the shelf on the right. You slip a thick binder into your hands and bury your nose inside it without so much as a greeting.
âI am going to get maimed,â Hyunjin tells Changbin.
âHave some faith, both of you,â Changbin replies sternly. You find the pages youâre looking for and begin poring over them like youâre cramming for an exam. âYouâll be fine, Jinnie. Y/N studied.â
âStudied?â He repeats. âFor this?â
âIâm pretty sure Quizlets were made.â
âThree, to be exact," you interject, sticking out your hand. âNow tape me.â
Hyunjin mouths the words tape me in baffled silence. The latter obliges your request with a smile. âSee? What could go wrong?â
The answer to that, actually, is a lot. Especially after Changbin gets called away to help stretch out a teammate named Felix who allegedly âsprained his ass,â leaving Hyunjin to you and your binder.
You detect no smoky rose in the air around him today, just the subtle smells of cedar and cypressâlaundry detergent or shampoo, maybe. Figures he doesnât wear that insufferable cologne to practice.
âGo easy on me, yeah?â
While Hyunjinâs tone is teasing, yours is downright somber.
âI canât promise anything.â
With that, you turn your palms face-up in a silent request for his hand.
A few strands of hair fall into your face as you lean in for a better look. Itâs the first time youâve seen his fingers untaped; theyâre pretty, long and slender and surprisingly manicured, but also battered in their delicacy, the veins running over the back of his hand and forearm prominent, his bottom knuckles discolored from the healing bruises they bear. His hard work is palpable upon the smooth skin as evidently as if tattooed.
Hyunjin says your name in close proximity. You respond with an absent hum.
âYouâre not nervous, are you?â
âNo. Maybe a little.â You let his hand fall free and go to rummage for supplies. âFine, yes. Very.â
âBut you made Quizlets. Youâre prepared for anything.â
âThatâs what Iâm saying!â You realize only after spotting the gentle smile on his face that heâs making fun of you. âI hate you.â
âActually,â he hums, âI think you care about me, love. Thatâs why youâre nervous.â
âNonsenseâI care about disappointing Changbin. Thatâs it.â
âAnd me. And hopping on Seungminâs dick. All these things donât have to be mutually exclusive.â
You try to tackle him. Hyunjin catches your hands a few inches away from his face, fingers closing around your wrists with obnoxious agility.
âHave you lost your mind?â You whisper-shout, your face on fire. âDonât bring that up here. Iâll maim you for real.â
The laugh that explodes out of him throws his entire body backwards, turns his eyes to crescent moons and his mouth into a little rectangle. You hate that you donât hate when that happens.
âMy bad, my bad. It slipped out. I wonâtââ
One incremental shift of Hyunjinâs body later, you find that youâre precariously, alarmingly close to one another.
So much so that you notice the mole beneath his left eye for the first time, that you're nearly cross-eyed looking at it. That the tip of your nose actually brushes against his before you pull away with a quiet intake of breath.Â
Things are awkward between you often, youâve realized recently. Youâre both professional yappers, always quick to digress, quick to find a new topic to bicker about before the awkwardness marinates. But hours later youâll look back on the interaction and still remember how the air shifted: like a layer of dust had been blown away and something untouched and unknown was discovered just underneath.
Since youâve met him, Hyunjin has spent more time on your nerves than on your mind. Youâre not exactly losing sleep over such a circumstantial acquaintance; you know that his presence in your life will end the way it began, naturally and anticlimactically and inside the ANTH 111 lecture hall. Still, it doesnât go unnoticed when your heart and stomach launch into an elaborate gymnastics routine in the wake of something he says or does, just as theyâre doing now.
Hyunjin glances into your right eye a moment, then your left. The mole just below his left eye disappears when he smiles, the expression soft, saccharine, and sincere. How anyone casually looks the way he does is beyond your abilities of comprehension.
âThank you,â he murmurs.
Your face continues to burn, now perhaps for different reasons. âWhat for?â
He lets go of your wrist, sweeps the lock of hair that keeps getting in your eyes behind the cuff of your ear.
âCaring about me.â
Then he flicks your forehead. You recoil with a quiet ow.
âNow stop stalling and tape me, dumbass.â
âOkay,â you mutter, rubbing the injury tenderly. âNo need to get violent.â
It turns out the arduous taping procedure described in the instruction manual is for serious hand injuries. Hyunjin splints his fingers together for support, not rehabilitation, so it takes all of five minutes for him to talk you through his process. You finish taping both of his hands with nineteen minutes to spare. So maybe the Quizlets were overkill.
As youâre walking him down to practice, you take his hand and lift it to eye level, scanning your craftsmanship dubiously. âItâs not too tight, is it?â
âItâs perfect.â He swivels the hand around and grabs onto your entire face, the sensation by now eerily familiar. âWant another taste?â
You shove him down the stairs that remain. Unfortunately, there are only two. âYou are truly grotesque.â
The gym has come to life since you arrived earlier this morning, now illuminated by shining ceiling lights in addition to the sun spilling through high, narrow windows. Most of the team has yet to step onto the court, still stretching or jogging along the sidelines: Minho and Coach Bang are talking strategy on the bench, the coach taking notes on a handheld whiteboard every now and then; Changbin is leaning over a recumbent Felix below the scoreboard, presumably trying to fix his ass.
The only one already with a ball in hand is Seungmin, setting to himself by the net. Once, twice, thrice straight up in the air, and then he glances in your direction and sends the fourth towards the left side of the court in a buoyant arc.
You only glean bits and pieces of the next few seconds. Hyunjin is at your side one moment, making a break for the net the next. His arms draw backwards in perfect synchrony. Feet hit the floor with laserlike intent. His entire body unravels like a fraying chrysalis as he rises to meet the ball, pounds it over the net and into the ground at an angle so clean that the sound of its landing resounds within your ribcage. It rebounds over the railing of the second floor and barely misses the doorway of the examination room you just emerged from.
Hyunjin drops lightly back onto his feet, following the ballâs tumultuous trajectory with proud eyes. A leftover breeze tosses a strand of hair over the bridge of your nose, and time starts moving again.
âOi, this isnât your backyard! Go pick that up!â Their coach booms, though his words lack their usual bitterness after what he just witnessed his ace hitter do.
Hyunjin swivels towards Seungmin first. âCrazy bitch. What the fuck was that?â
âLower and faster. Further from the net too,â Seungmin returns. âHowâd it feel?â
The grin on Hyunjinâs face reminds you of a wildfire, untamed and all-consuming and frightening in its fervor. âLike we just won everything.â
He tousles your hair as he jogs past you and back up the stairs to fetch the volleyball. Seungmin waves at you with one hand and palms another ball into his other. His face is warm and bare, his slim build flattered by his volleyball gear. Youâve witnessed few people so nice to look at and even fewer things as elegant as his setting form. But you are still thinking about Hyunjinâand you canât move.
It is debilitating, watching somebody do the very thing they were destined for.
A little less than a week later, Hyunjin is approaching hour three of spewing hot garbage into a Word document when he decides to give up and call you.Â
âHello?â He immediately starts laughing. âWhere the fuck are you?â
You poke the top of your head into the shot of your ceiling, gesturing to your headband. âMy face is preoccupied at the moment.â
âOh, you have to show me. Please.â
You flip your phone up for no more than half a second. A camera shutter goes off, followed by a shriek so loud that it peaks your mic.
âMotherfucker!â
He basically sprints to his camera roll. His prize: you with your face slathered in cleanser, hair pinned back by a Miffy headband, looking like the abominable snowman if he liked cute merchandise.
âThank you,â he says earnestly. âIâll treasure this forever.â
âYouâll be punished, Hwang.â
âDonât threaten me with a good time.â
You brandish your middle finger at him in response. He props his phone up against his computer screen with a chuckle.Â
âAaanyways, I have a thesis statement to run by you.â
The first thing you did as Hyunjinâs tutor was help draft an email to Professor Kim, begging her to let him resubmit the two essays he royally botched. She replied with a lengthy quotation from her syllabus, specifically the section that talked about (and prohibited) resubmissions, but ended up making an exception for Hyunjin on account of the âtruly piteous timbreâ of his email. You fell out of your chair laughing when he read you her response.
âYou shouldâve opened with that.â
âI tried, hello? Someone distracted me!â
âRead. It. Before I change my mind.â
You spend a few minutes at most on the thesis itself, advising him to avoid passive voice, answer the prompt, establish a refutable argument, the works. Then he asks you a question about the research topic itself, allusions to the afterlife in Ancient Egyptian artwork, and the tutoring session takes a turn into what feels like a podcast episode.
You talk about the God of Death, Anubis, and his connections to the underworld; the elaborate, lavish funerary rituals intended to ensure the souls of the dead traveled safely; the vibrant murals that flanked their final resting spots as pictorial requests for divine protection. And you talk about them all with such confidence, such eloquence, that itâs as if youâre leading him through a history museum rather than talking to your phone as you do your skincare. He could listen to you for hours. He does, actually.
Around 1 A.M., Hyunjin stops typing mid-sentence when you come into frame for the first time, collapsing into your bed with a sigh of relief. Your eyes are soft and sleepy as they blink at your screen, strands of damp hair clinging to your cheeks. He feels his heart physically shift inside his ribcage when your mouth stretches into a yawn. It is the same sensation as the time you shot him a smile over your shoulder and he couldnât move for ten minutes.
With that, his attention span has run its course.
âBaby,â he interrupts gently. âLetâs stop here, okay? You seem tired.â
You open your mouth as if to protest, only to yawn again.
âI suppose I am. Will you keep working tonight?â
âI think so. I hit my stride.â
âText me if you have questions, then. Iâll respond when I wake up.â
âOkay.â
âOkay.â
Your lips curve into the smallest of smiles. It copies onto Hyunjinâs face incurably quickly.Â
âI had my doubts about this tutoring thing, you know.â
âWhy is that?â
âWell, you told me this class was the closest thing to daily naptime youâd experienced since preschool.â
âIt really is.â
âYou also told me you would rather slam your tongue in a car door than read more than three sentences in one sitting.â
âI really would.â
âAnd you once referred to academia as âVirgin Village.ââ
âDidnât you come up with that?â
âNo, hello? I live in that village.â
He grins. âI know. I just wanted to hear you admit it.â
âFuck you.â
âAh, donât threaten me with a goodââ
âWhat Iâm trying to say is that I didnât think you would take this seriously, but Iâm happy to be proven wrong.â
Hyunjin leans back. âWell, turns out I might give a fuck about anthropology after all.â
âReally?â
âNo.â
You pretend to punch him through the screen. Itâs so cute that he forgets to think before he opens his mouth next.
âBut I do give a fuck about you.â
Thereâs nothing crazy about the statement. Youâre friends, sort of. You manage his team. It would be strange if he didnât. But the seconds that follow are terrible, a silent prophecy of something disastrous, like a cloud of rubble before an avalanche, the standstill during a starâs final breath. And Hyunjinâs heartbeat is hounding against his ears like a performance of traditional taiko.
He says good night in a haste. The call ends. He stares at the wall of his bedroom in a muddled haze for who knows how long.
Then he opens his texts.
Hyunjin: We have team bonding tomorrow btw Hyunjin: Donât forget Y/N: i forgot. Y/N: pick me up at 6:45? Hyunjin: đ«Ą
He picks you up at 7:53.
You approach his car with your fists balled and your eyebrows knitted together like a mean old curmudgeon and heâs walking too close to your lawn.
âHis fault,â Hyunjin says before you start yelling.
Minho simpers at you through his open window. âHey, you! So glad you could join us!â
You fix the man with a judgmental glare as you slide into the backseat. âArenât you the captain? Why are you this late?â
âWhoa, okay. I wouldâve scheduled this for earlier if I knew right now was honesty hour.â
âYou did schedule it for earlier,â you say. âYou scheduled it for way earlier.â
âYeah, well, youâre fired.â
âYou canât fire me, Minho.â
âI can too. Tell âem, Hwang.â
âI want nothing to do with this.â
When you step through the doors of the arcade, youâre met with a surge of sensory input that you havenât experienced in years. The air hangs thick with the smells of greasy concessions; everywhere you look are flashing screens and neon signs, stuffed animals and fading posters; clamoring against your ears are the sounds of games being won or lost, of balls being pocketed or launched, and of a horde of fully grown men spectating a match of Dance Dance Revolution so passionately (and loudly) that theyâve scared everyone away from that side of the room. You recognize the current competitors as Changbin and Jeongin.
âIâll go pay,â Hyunjin says. âHow much time do we want?â
âInfinity,â Minho answers. Hyunjin doesnât move. âTwo hours.â
He flashes him a thumbs-up. âAnd you?â
âIâm okay, I think.â
âNo youâre not,â the two men answer in perfect unison.
You glance between them warily. âI donât mind watching, seriously. I donât even know how most of these games workââ
âThereâs Tetris,â Hyunjin cuts in.
You purchase an hour.
One would imagine the point of the evening is to break the SNU menâs volleyball team, not to bond them. Youâve never seen so many strained blood vessels in your life. Nor have you heard of half the insults they spew at each other as the night goes on. Felix has to pay a fee for lodging an air hockey puck in the side of the MarioKart machine. Changbin loses at skee-ball and has to down an XL slushie like itâs a shot. Itâs a scary amount of boyishness expressed in scary ways.
But theyâre happy. Youâve picked up on it when theyâre on the court, noticed the raw elation they emanate just from playing together. Yet, their closeness has never been more evident to you than tonight. The men are either laughing or making someone else laugh, arms draped over each other at all times, equally happy to celebrate victories as theyâre eager to punish losses. It dawns on you at some point that youâre glad to be here with them, grateful to be a part of something so specialâespecially because thereâs Tetris.
âHave you ever considered going pro?â Hyunjin asks over your shoulder.
You waited until most of the team was distracted to slink off to your beloved machine. Hyunjin tagged along, undoubtedly with the intention of making fun of you, only to be rendered speechless by your mastery. Heâs been watching in a state of stupor, forearms propped against the back of your chair.
You donât respond for a while, too focused on a precarious patch to even blink, let alone partake in conversation.
âI already did,â you finally answer.
âSorry, what? You played professional Tetris?â
âIn middle school. Then I got bored and switched to backgammon.â You pause. âThen I got bored again and switched to chess.â
âHow do you look like this with these hobbies?â
Your run ends a few minutes later with a somber sound effect. You turn around in your seat with an anguished groan. âI think Iâm washed.â
He looks at you like youâve lost your mind. âYou just set a new record by three hundred thousand points.â
âItâs a small pond,â you say, and an idea occurs to you. âDo you wanna try?â
âI get the feeling I donât have a choice.â
âThen youâre smarter than you look.â
âWell, you lookââ
His eyes move between your shoes and your face, and then his voice is an inaudible mutter as he sinks into your seat. You think you hear something along the lines of unfair.
âWhat was that?â
âUgly. I said you look ugly.â He cracks his knuckles. âNow letâs break some fuckin' blocks.âÂ
When Hyunjin learns that the pieces can be rotated (so six or seven attempts later), a man walks into the arcade.Â
He has hair the color of dark chocolate, the face of a fairy princeâand heâs with someone. The two of them appear arm in arm, laughing at something he said. He looks at this person the way astronomers do to the sky.
Something shatters inside you like old porcelain.
Your hands loosen around the back of Hyunjinâs chair. You canât watch. You canât think. You can only feel a void of disappointment rip open, stretch over you like an elongating shadow.
âSeung!â Thatâs Jisung, you think. âYou made it!â
âYo, sorry weâre late.â Thatâs Seungmin. That is undoubtedly Seungmin. âDinner took longer than I thought.â
âMin, are you sure Iâm allowed to be here?â You donât know who this voice belongs to and youâre not sure you want to. âI feel like Iâm intrudingââ
âHwang,â you say suddenly. âI have to go.â
He turns around, confused. An unattended block falls into a terrible spot on the screen behind him. âAlready?â
âI forgot I had an important call to make.â You turn away, training your eyes on the patterned carpet. âSorry. Iâll see you around.â
You have touched Hyunjinâs hands many times. Heâs asked you to tape his fingers every day since the first; he likes the way you cut off his circulation, says it helps him hit harder. But you never hold his hand so much as you examine it, the act stiff and unfeeling, cordoned within the professional pretense of athletic treatment.Â
Now, Hyunjin catches your hand like a gardener repotting their favorite flower: delicately, careful of leaving its roots intact and petals untouched, but firmly, securely, so the flower continues to stand tall even when itâs been extracted from the soil, not even a speck of dirt slipping through the cracks between their fingers. That is the image you conjure when he slips his between yours, his metal rings cold where his fingertips are warm.
He says your name. There is a pinch of pain in the word, and you know that he knows.
âDo you want to be alone?â
You have never been asked such a thingâyou have never asked to be asked such a thingâbut, for some reason, the question brings tears to your eyes.Â
âYes, please,â you whisper, and you pull your hand away.
When you stalk past him, you hear Jisung notice you, call out to you, a note of worry in his question. You also count three pairs of eyes on your back: one concerned, the next confused, and the last you are wholly incapable of meeting.Â
Unknown to you is the fourth pair fixed upon the top of the Tetris machine, where youâve left your phone.
You emerge into the parking lot. The frigid air stills your mind for a fraction of a second, the last moment of mental quietude you will allow yourself that night.
Hyunjinâs right; the team manager doesnât have to do much.
Coach Bang allows you to come to whichever practices and games you feel like, during which you might at most lug around a ballbag or fill someoneâs waterbottle before holing up somewhere to do your own thing. But you like the people you work for too much to do so little for them, so you attend everything your schedule allows.Â
Last week, you could be found helping Minho put up the volleyball nets before practice, your laughter echoing throughout the spacious gym as he complained to you about his biochemistry professorâs distinct âcabbage scent.â Or running to grab materials for Changbin as he treated his teammatesâ injuries like you were assisting an orthodontist giving someone a root canal. The dinner invitations you extended to Seungmin were always turned down, but his teammates were more than happy to assist you and Hyunjin in your quest to establish the best kimbap joint in the area once and for all. You even had a heart-to-heart with Coach Bang during one of the teamâs water breaks, in which you managed to get half a smile out of the guy; Hyunjin was convinced that was his way of asking you to elope. You spent more time in the gymnasium those ten days than you had your entire college career.
Then came the arcade.
Five days have come and gone. You havenât attended practice since, but you still see Hyunjin every morning at anthropology. The two of you sit in uncharacteristic silence for most of the lectures. Youâve taken the best notes of your life. He doesnât mention the previous weekend; he doesnât mention much of anything.Â
In person, that is.
That Friday afternoon, youâre reading on the terrace of the library when you receive a text. Itâs from Hyunjin, a two-minute voice note. You hesitate for a moment, stick a pencil into the gutter of your textbook to save your place, and slip your earbuds in. You listen to it.
Then you listen to it again.
And again as you wrap up your study session and go home. Again as you cook yourself dinner and load the dishwasher. Again as you shrug on a jacket and pocket your keys, setting off on the familiar trek to the gym.
As for what you plan to do there on a Friday night, long after the team has finished practice, you havenât the slightest clue. You continue to move regardless, fueled by the feeling that there is where you need to be.
Coach Bang is leaving the building just as youâre approaching it. He halts in his footsteps and raises his eyebrows when he notices you. The man has always been difficult to read, but his face is exceptionally opaque now. Maybe itâs the shadowy landscape; more likely itâs the uneasiness that began to mount within you once you noticed the lights in the gym were still on.
âItâs been a while,â he greets.
âCoach,â you return, lowering your head. âI want to apologize forââ
âSave it,â he says, not unkindly. âThereâs nothing to apologize for, alright? The team is lucky to have you.â
You manage a grateful smile. âIâll be back starting next week.â
âIâm glad to hear it.â He starts to walk away, stops himself, and glances into the illuminated building. âI would give him some space, by the way.â
Your uneasiness morphs into anxiety as you watch his broad back retreat into the shadows. You remain outside the gym for a few minutes more, accompanied by the distant melodies of cricket chorales and the muffled squeaking of shoes against laminated hardwood, the harsh sounds of flesh meeting leather.
Briskly, you walk home, rummage around, and return to the gym ten minutes later with your textbook tucked beneath your arm. This time, you unlock and enter the building without a moment of hesitation.Â
Hyunjin is positioned multiple yards behind the service line, rotating a volleyball in his hands. A high toss, two resounding steps, and a collision like the crack of a whip. The previous ball has barely landed in the furthest corner of the court when heâs picking up the next, retreating to the same spot to do it all again. His tank top is the color of charcoal over his sweaty skin, his hair auburn where itâs plastered to his neck. Heâs alone.
You only catch sight of Hyunjinâs face when you descend the stairs. His expression is crystalline, hardened with concentration and fortified by courage, but fragile all at once, rendered delicate by fatigue and fear, spilling from his every seam and splintering off his person like a broken vase. You recognize it as clearly as if you were looking at a picture of yourself from the worst years of your life.
âI was told to give you space,â you call out, and Hyunjin drops the volleyball heâs holding.
His lips fall apart. Nothing comes out of them. The only sounds to follow are your footsteps as you make your way towards the bleachers, a vertical wall of plastic now that theyâve been retracted for the night. You fold your legs into a criss-cross as you take a seat at their base.
âIs this enough space?â
More silence. You gesture to the volleyball nervously.
âDonât make me go further, please. Iâm not ready to die.â
Finally, this earns you a smile. Itâs not much, but it loosens the nervous coils in your heart, permits your lungs to contract once more, and it remains on his face as he swipes the ball back into his hands. You open your textbook.
The rest of the night elapses in turning pages and soaring volleyballs. You donât care for minutes or hours; you give him all the time in the world, as he did you.
The only time you glance at the clock on the wall is around midnight, when Hyunjin hobbles to the middle of the court and collapses. Youâre worried at first. Then he rolls onto his back and releases a guttural groan into his hands, and your held breath comes out a laugh. You set down your book and stand up.
Thereâs a lake of perspiration forming around him. You pay it no mind and flop onto the floor, your eyes instantly narrowing beneath the fluorescent lights.Â
âHow do you see under these things?â
âI donât,â he returns. âI complained about it to Coach once.â
âAnd?â
âHe made them brighter.â Sounds about right.
Hyunjin spends the next few minutes catching his breath, his chest rising and falling in your peripheral vision. You sift through your mind for phrases of consolation or gestures of support and come up empty. You wish you had Hyunjinâs way with words.
But you think about the way his smile reached his eyes as he thanked you for caring about him, the tenderness with which he caught your hand at the arcade, the I give a fuck about you he blurted before ending the study call. You think about the voice note. Itâs not that Hyunjin has a way with words; itâs that heâs brave enough to break the silences that you canât, like he perceives your anxiety for the aftermath, shouldering the responsibility so you wonât have to.
This cannot be his burden alone.
You inhale. âWhatâs on your mind?â
Hyunjin doesnât answer right away. You give up on squinting and close your eyes. The lights are still bright enough to dance around the murky darkness.
âI donât think I know how to put it into words.â
You nearly laugh; you know how that feels. âDonât think, just talk. Iâm here.â
The same advice you gave yourself seems to work on him as well.
âDo you remember Ishikawa Yuki?â
His role model.
âHeâs currently playing for a club team in Italy called Allianz Milano.â He blows out a deep breath. âIâve been talking to their coach, Roberto Piazza, for the last six months.â
The gears in your head creak in their effort to process the implications of these words. âHoly shit, Hwang.â
âHe emailed again, this morning. Said he was coming to the tournament later this month, heâs excited to see me play in person, whatever. And it hit me, finally, that this is all real. Like, this is actually happening to me. I spent all of today freaking out and asked Coach to let me stay back after practice. Usually, it wears out my brain if I tire my body, but it only half-worked today. I couldnât wrap my head around anything. I still canât.
âI am who I am because of that man, and nowâŠI have a shot at playing with him. I keep asking myself why Iâm notânot happier. I should be bouncing off the fucking walls, no? If I told my past self that this would be happening to him one day, heâhe wouldââ
You open your eyes, confused by the sudden silence.
Hyunjin is sitting up next to you, staring intensely into the bleachers. You first notice the tip of his tongue prodding into his cheek, then his shuddering breath. He lifts a hand to his face, pressing against his eyes.
You stop thinking after that.
You sit up with him. When you settle your fingers around his wrist, he allows you to pull his hand back to his side. But he turns away as if trying to hide from you; he squeezes his eyes shut as if that would obstruct your view of his pain.
You reach to cradle his face, bringing him back to you. The cuff of your sleeves wipe at the saltwater on his cheeks, push the hair off his forehead with gentle sweeps. The two of you are close, close enough that your lips would meet the space between his eyes if you so much as lost your balance. His gaze traverses to your face, but you resolve not to meet it. You know you will traipse into uncharted territory the moment you do.
âDonât fight it.â You trace over the hill of his cheek. âHealing becomes easier if you let yourself hurt. Trust me, Hyunjin.â
His first name should feel foreign on your tongue, yet you suspect the syllables have accompanied you all your life.
âYou donât have to continue if you canât.â
âSâokay.â Hyunjin lifts your hand away from his face, presses a kiss to the base of your palm. âI want to.â
You feel yourself stumble ungracefully into the uncharted territory from before; does he do the same?
âI used to play volleyball on this expanse of cracked blacktop, behind my primary school. It was pretty brutal on my feetâI blew through so many different pairs of sneakers my mom almost made me quit.â He smiles at the memory. âBut every time I came close to quitting, Iâd go home and rewatch the same USA vs. Poland match from the 2008 Summer Olympics I asked my dad to record, and Iâd promise myself it would be me on some other kidâs screen someday.
âThat kid would tell everyone whoâd listen about how cool I am. That Iâm a secret superhero. That Iâm living proof humans can fly if they really, really tryâjust like I talked about the volleyball players I grew up watching on my TV.
âThe other day, Coach told me that hope would consume me. I thought it was just some senile drivel at the time, but..I think I get what he means now. I would do anything and everything to make that kid proudâeven if it meant losing myself.â He lowers his head, auburn strands falling into his eyes. âThatâs whatâs on my mind.â
Amidst the ensuing pause, a storm approaches. It does not come in the form of rain or snow, sleet or hail, no; it is a gathering of words unsaid and emotions unacknowledged, all emerging from the deepest chambers of your heart in synchrony. The same entities you used to scapegoat for all the times things were awkward between you and Hyunjin when you were the culprit all along. You and your blind cowardice.
The storm tears open the seam of your lips. You do not resist; itâs long overdue.
âEvery time Changbin sees you, he turns into a smitten schoolgirl,â you say. âHe is physically unable to contain how endearing he finds you. He told me so himself.â
Hyunjin looks at you with widened eyes. You think you can see your own reflection in them, and you are the spitting image of a lighter dropped into gasoline, unstoppable in your vehemence.
âJeongin comes to you for advice before anyone else,â you continue, âeven for things related to schoolâwhich I still find hard to believe, Iâm not gonna lie. But you have his best interests in mind, and it shows in everything you do for him. Of course your opinion matters more than anything in the world.
âI know you think he canât stand you, but you are the reason Coach Bang loves this job, why he loves this sport. Itâs written all over his face every time he calls you something mean, every time he makes you run another lap, every time he looks at you. Youâre like a son to him. Everyone sees it but you.â
âThen thereâs me.â You pause to catch your breath. âWhen I think about what my life used to be, I remember a lot of things. I remember loneliness. Insecurity. I remember my books and my backgammon boards and the way I taught myself to disappear inside them so the world would never find me. I remember avoiding mirrors like a vampire because I didnât like seeing my own reflection. I remember feeling like I had to put on someone elseâs personality every time I left the house because nobody would want to know me for me. All I ever wanted was a place where I could be myself, love myself, without consequence. I have yet to find that place.
âBut I found a person. Someone who wouldnât know time and place if they kicked his dick into his body. Someone who thinks instant ramen is high in nutritional value because it comes with dried vegetables. Someone who sweats the same amount of rain the Sahara Desert receives yearlyâyour body is not normal, by the way.â
Hyunjin giggles; it is soft and short, a small, tearful huff into the quiet air that makes you feel like youâre flying.
âDonât get me wrong,â you say. âYour sense of humor sucks and your taste in coffee is so boring and you are the one with no media literacy, not Professor Kim. But I love spending time with you. I love who I am when Iâm around you. And none of that has to do with volleyball.â
The next time you blink, you discover that heâs not the only one with tears in his eyes. How long has that been going on?
âThereâs so much about you to be proud of, Hyunjin.â You give him a watery smile. âThat kid will be spoiled for choice.â
When Hyunjin pulls you into his arms, you fall into each other like going to bed after a long day. Your face burrows into the crook of his neck in your embarrassment; he is laughing and crying at the same time when he mumbles something into your shoulder: âI knew you cared about me.â
You are so happy for the comedic relief you could sob. It helps that you already are.
âHow the fuck are you still sweaty?â You choke out, and you think you like his cologne after all.
Six days later, Hyunjin opens the door of his apartment.
A fun-sized flurry of black and white barrages into the hallway outside and almost runs headfirst into the figure waiting there. You fall to your knees like youâve just been gravely wounded, emitting an ear-piercing wail to match. All it takes is a few good head scratches for Kkami to stop yipping bloody murder and start whining for attention instead.Â
Upon minute five of watching you and his dog cuddle in the hallway directly outside his home, Hyunjin sighs.
âCan you come inside, please? My RA will think Iâm doing some freaky shit again.â
You side-eye him as you walk into his apartment, Kkami perched happily in your arms. âWhat, exactly, does freaky shit entail?â
He smirks as the door falls shut. âYou want me to tell you or show you?â
You turn to Kkami, disgusted. âYour ownerâs a bit of a pervert, my dear.â
Kkami licks you on the chin. Hyunjinâs eyes narrow to slits.
âTraitor.â
Naturally, Hyunjinâs parents chose the eve of his final anthropology examâand the week before the tournament that will determine the trajectory of his careerâto ask him to look after Kkami for a few days. He nearly canceled their plane tickets himself, but his impromptu roommate is currently ransacking your face with kisses on his couch, and he thinks your laugh complements his studio better than any decoration.Â
âDo you want anything to drink?â He calls from the kitchen area.
You meander over, Kkami (still) perched happily in your arms. âWhat do you have?âÂ
âAlcohol.â He opens his fridge far enough so you can peer over his shoulder. âAmericanos.â
He stops speaking.
âIs that all?â
âYes. Waitâand apple juice.â
âYou are about to be a professional athlete.â
âWhat the Italians donât know wonât hurt them. You want apple juice, donât you? I can see it in your eyes.â
âMaybe. Can you open it for me? My hands are full.â
Hyunjin does so with far less reluctance than he feigns. You thank him jubilantly, popping the straw into your mouth.
âLetâs get this over with.â
At 10:32 P.M., all is calm. You are sitting on the floor, your back against the side of his mattress. Hyunjin is where the universe intended: curled up in bed, both him and his laptop lying on their sides. You have studied eight out of ten units in only two and a half hours, and the night is still young. Kkami is but a fluffy, sleepy Oreo by your waist.
At 10:33 P.M., the Oreo begins to retch.
You startle a foot into the air. Hyunjin is out of bed and on his feet in the blink of an eye, the very image of a dog dad on duty. He grabs three different things off the kitchen counter with one hand and scoops up the long-haired chihuahua with the other, and then heâs kicking open the door.
Seungmin appears out of thin air carrying two heaping bags of groceries. Hyunjin nearly knocks him and a monthâs worth of fresh produce down four flights of stairs.
âHyunâKkami?â Seungmin swivels. âYo, what the fuck isââ
Hyunjin is already out the door.
A few minutes later, Hyunjin squats off to the side, pouring fresh water into a portable dog bowl. A little ways away, Kkami is throwing up ebulliently; a set of footsteps approaches.
âWhat is this thing?â Seungmin squats down next to Hyunjin, picking up the piece of patterned fabric lying on the grass.Â
âKkami gets sad after throwing up,â he sighs. âHis blanket makes him feel better.â
Seungmin watches the chihuahua for a few moments, a soft flinch crimping his features. âHe ate too fast again?â
Hyunjin rakes a hand through his hair. âI donât get it. Nobodyâs gonna take his food from him.â
Seungmin laughs. âI didnât even know he was on campus.â
âI picked him up last night. My parents are traveling for workâthey say hi, by the way.â
âI say hi back. I miss your momâs cooking.â
âMe too,â Hyunjin says, smiling. âShe would love to cook for you againâsheâs always saying youâre too skinny.â
âShe really is.â
A beat passes; it is then that Hyunjin has an epiphany.
Seungmin was the one who put a volleyball in his hands for the first time. Back then, Hyunjin was the lesser troublemaker between the two of themâa concept that neither of them can wrap their heads around to this day. Seungmin suggested they use the clotheslines in Hyunjinâs backyard as a makeshift net, despite Hyunjinâs dissuading; half of Hyunjinâs fatherâs wardrobe caught on fire, Seungmin had a black eye for a week, and nobody knows what happened to that volleyball. The two of them have been attached at the hip ever since.
It is a crazy thing, having your best friend as a teammate; a singular flick of the wrist or a point of his shoe and Seungmin will know exactly Hyunjin wants the ball down to the netâs fraying fibers; Hyunjin will be exactly where Seungmin needs him down to the flecks of paint on the volleyball court. Hyunjin has always been Seungminâs hitterâSeungmin, always Hyunjinâs setter. Nothing will ever change between them so long as that remains the case.
At least, thatâs what Hyunjin used to think.
Learning that Seungmin was in a relationship was as much a wake-up call for Hyunjin as it was for you. At first, he was just fucking pissed; how could Seungmin be so stupid as to turn down someone like you, especially when Hyunjin had shot his mouth off about his wingman services? More importantly, how long had his best friend of eighteen years been in love, and why was he the last to know?Â
Only now, as they wait for his nine-year-old chihuahua to finish barfing, does Hyunjin realize that he canât remember the last time he and Seungmin talked. Not âtalkedâ as in a brief exchange inside the locker room or the lecture hall, about a new approach he wants to try or what Seungmin got on number four or if he wants a ride to practiceââtalkedâ as in talked, about Hyunjin, about Seungmin, about the eighteen years they shared, about all the years yet to come.
Hyunjin sees his setter every day; he stopped looking for his friend a long time ago.Â
âYeonwoo, right?â
He senses surprise in Seungmin without having to look at him. But he also senses a smile, a subtle show that Seungmin recognizes what heâs trying to doâand forgives him.
âYeonwoo,â Seungmin affirms. âWeâre in the same songwriting intensive this semester.â
âAlso a singer?â
He shakes his head. âPiano player. Performed at the Carnegie Hall in the United States at, like, seven years old. I donât think Iâve ever met someone so talented.â
âWow, thatâsâhi, old man. You done?â
Kkami walks over with his head hung low and tail between his legs, and Hyunjin hurries to drape the pup in his favorite blanket, pulling the bowl of water in front of him in tandem. Seungmin runs a hand over the top of Kkamiâs head as he hydrates.
âYouâve suffered,â he tells him solemnly, and Hyunjin snorts.
âAs I was sayingâthatâs crazy to hear, coming from the most talented person I know. You guys looked so good together.â
âThanks. Itâs weird. Iâm happy.â
âYou deserve it. You really do, Kim.â They exchange smiles, and Hyunjin gives Seungmin a playful nudge. âWhen are you introducing us?â
âThe arcade wasnât enough?â
âDonât insult me.â
âWhenever you want, then.â
âDinner with my mom, dinner with Yeonwoo,â Hyunjin recounts. âIâm holding you to it.â
âBet.â
They shake on it. If Hyunjin wasnât already reassured by Seungminâs smile, he knows by his clasp around his hand that theyâll be okay.
âWhat about you?â Seungmin asks. âAre you together yet?â
Hyunjin knew this was coming. âWhat do you mean?â
âYou know what I mean.â Seungmin strings his hands together, letting them dangle in the space between his knees. âSomeone you have questions for that youâre too scared to ask. Someone whoâs lived in your mind since the day you met. Thereâs someone like that, isnât there?â
Hyunjin pokes his tongue into his cheek.Â
Ever since that night on the gym floor, Hyunjinâs been having these dreams. By the time his alarm goes off in the morning, every detail of the dream has eluded him, leaving behind only a ghost of emotion, akin to the breeze that grazes your face moments after walking past another person.
But then heâll get out of bed, and walk to that cafĂ© on the east side of campus, rubbing the sleep from his eyes. There, heâll order a vanilla latte with extra sweetener, then turn around to see you standing five feet away, holding an Americano and trying not to laugh. And heâll just know, with everything in him, that you are where his head goes when heâs not keeping watch.
He still addresses you by the pet names you hate. He still finds any excuse to be close to you; he still pesters you like a child with a crush. But now, he calls you his baby like one wishes on a star; his eyes drift to your lips every time youâre within two feet of each other; he makes fun of your likes and dislikes only because heâs happy to know about them at all. Ever since that night on the gym floor.
Itâs impossible for nothing and everything to change at once. Two people teetering on the precipice of something cannot withstand a gust of wind so powerful. Heâs already hanging off the ledge, losing his grip; where are you?
Next to him, Seungmin lets out a soft laugh. âThere is.â
Hyunjin doesnât know what to say.
âIt mightâve been me, at some point,â he hums, returning his hand to scratch the back of Kkamiâs ears. âBut it has always been you, Hyun.â
Four floors above them and inside Hyunjinâs place, you are pacing between his fridge and his bed, nervously awaiting his and Kkamiâs return.
Something catches your eye, wide and flat and hung on the wall by his bathroom door. You approach it curiously, your lips pulling into a fond smile the moment you realize all thatâs in front of you.
Many of the photographs are of Hyunjin: him in his preteens, dead asleep in bed while dressed head to toe in volleyball gear, braces visible because his mouth is open; an action shot taken at what mustâve been a U21 match, the South Korean flag stitched into the shoulder of his jersey; him with half a birthday cake in front of him and the rest smeared all over his face. There are headlines, too: Underdog team earns districtâs first high school volleyball state title; Hwang Hyunjin proves himself worthy of âace spikerâ label at South Korea V. Croatia U19 match; Coach Bang âChristopherâ Chan leads Seoul National University to second consecutive KUL championship. Thereâs oneâWho is Hwang Hyunjin? Meet the twenty-year-old instigant of South Koreaâs imminent volleyball revolutionâbeside which heâs written the singular word âmouthful.â You laugh; you agree.
But pinned to the corkboard is also a photograph of Minho, surrounded by stray cats in the alleyway outside a K-BBQ restaurant; his parents cradling Kkami in an apple costume; his high school volleyball team silhouetted against a pretty sunset. Him and Seungmin as kids, covered in grime and scrapes but beaming nonetheless; him and Seungmin at age nineteen, stadium lights on their backs, unadulterated elation on their faces as they charge towards each other, beaming still. Changbin piggybacking Felix through the hallways of the gym, neither of them wearing a shirt; Jisung offering Coach Bang a beer while the latter looks direly unamused (you make a mental note to ask about that one later); what looks like a Rock Lee cosplayer grimacing in the middle of your anthropology classroom.
You rush forward as if decreed by gravitational force. Not too far away is another picture of you, in which you boast a Miffy headband and a face full of foaming cleanser. Then another, your eyes narrowed like that of a sniper taking aim as youâre playing Tetris; you with so many volleyballs piled into your arms that you canât see your own face; your cheeks squished by a bandaged hand after you lost a bet about pandas (they can swim); you clutching your stomach on the library floor, brought to hysterical tears by Professor Kimâs email. You, you, you.
You bring your pointer finger to this last image, tracing it over the curve of your own cheek. You see a dimple on your face you didnât know you had. You realize it only comes out for him.
It has always been him.
The front door opens. A man with telephone poles for legs and a long-haired chihuahua in his arms appears behind it. You sense in him that something has changed since you last saw each other. The two of you lock eyes.Â
Itâs not awkward this time.
Multiple yards behind the service line, Hyunjin is rotating a volleyball in his hands. It feels solid and sentient, an extension of himself held in cotton-clad fingers. He knows how this story will end.
He moves his eyes to his best friendâs back. Four fingers flash back at him twice, signaling a high lob set to the left, the very play theyâve practiced tirelessly for the last five weeks. The breath Hyunjin blows out of his cheeks seems to crystallize in the air, almost solid in all its exhilaration.Â
He bends low and throws high. His arms drop behind his body like a spread of feathered wings; his feet fall into place below him like a meteor shower, two consecutive strikes against the earth that fissure its mantle. The lights overhead are bright. His palm pulls taut when it slams into leather. He knows how this story will end.
The volleyball tears towards the ground. It trembles as if scared by all that it holds: the guarantee of a flawless denouement, the catalyst of a radiant future. Hyunjinâs heart is beating hard enough to crack his ribs when he lands back on the ground, when the volleyball lands in the furthest corner of the court. Heâs not scared at all.
He balls his fingers into fists.
âJUST LIKE LAST YEAR, BACK TO BACK ON AN ACEââ
An arm seizes Hyunjinâs neck; another drags him onto the floor. His head thuds onto the hardwood with a sound he hears over the whole world detonating. His vision fills with the faces of the people he cares for most, some covered in tears and others rivaling the ceiling with their blinding smiles. He canât feel most of his body; his sweat drips into his mouth. He doesnât care. He doesnât care.
ââDEFENDING THEIR TITLE FOR THE THIRD CONSECUTIVE YEARââ
His eyes find Seungminâs among the fray. Their hands clap together with such force that Hyunjin cusses at the impact. Seungminâs gaze burns into his with a ferocity that Hyunjin plans to take to his grave. His setter. His best friend.
He says something inaudible, but Hyunjin reads the words off his lips, and his eyes fill with tears: we win everything.
ââYOUR NATIONAL CHAMPIONS: SEOUL NATIONAL UNIVERSITY!â
Hyunjinâs post-game interview is a lawless affair. He is allowed at most half an answer before a new teammate is barreling over with an animalistic screech or a new friend is screaming congratulations from out of frame.
The reporter is visibly agitated by her final question, unpursing her lips to ask: âIs there anyone youâd like to thank?â
Hyunjin exhales. âYou want the short answer or the longââ
Changbin seizes him by the head. Hyunjin bursts into a peal of high-pitched laughter as the libero litters kisses all over his face, nearly crumpling to the floor in his attempt to escape.
âLove you,â he yells before hurrying off.Â
âLove you too, Bin.â
Hyunjin turns a sheepish smile to the reporter.
âThe short answer,â she deadpans.
He starts counting off his fingers. He thanks his familyâhis first and last teammates, his eternal anchors. His other family, his actual teammates, the best boys heâs ever known. His coach, who will let him call him Chris someday. His best friend and setter, Kim Seungmin, who set a clothesline on fire once and changed his life forever.
In the distance, a figure emerges from the locker rooms. Thereâs a navy blue SNU banner draped over your shoulders, two overflowing duffel bags in your hands. Jisung and Jeongin run over to take them from you, and the smile you give them is wide and flushed, a remnant of the elation you shared from afar. The three of you start walking out of the gym.
Hyunjin thanks you.
You didnât ask for the position, he tells the reporter, but some idiot roped you into it, and theyâre all so grateful that you decided to stick around. You know the team better than they know themselvesâitâs hard to believe youâve been with them for five weeks instead of five years.
What are you like? What arenât you like, is the better question. Youâre caring, smart, strong; you see so much goodness in the people around you, all while unaware that it is your warmth that brings it out of them. Flowers only bloom in the sunâs doting radius, and so did he.
You have the sort of soul that incurs the scorn of the stars. They are the only ones to deserve you, they'd argue; youâre wasting your potential among humans when you belong to the sky, and theyâd be right.
Hyunjin pokes his tongue into his cheek, suddenly annoyed.
âWhy the fuck am I still talking to you?âÂ
âPardon?â The reporter returns, but Hyunjin is already vaulting over the bleachers, making a mad dash for the exit. She gives her cameraman an affronted glare. He shrugs.
He explodes onto the concrete, looking around in a frantic haze. He finds the blue banner heading toward the team bus and flanked by his teammates with ease.
He calls out to you.
You glance backwards. Your smile is purely effulgent, your laugh but a faint sigh against the areaâs busy thrum. His heart is pounding against his ribs like a battering ram again, but heâs used to this feeling by now. Jeongin and Jisung make themselves scarce.
Youâre beautiful. God, youâre fucking beautiful. That was the first thought to enter his mind when he spilled an iced Americano on your lap all those months ago and you looked at him like he hailed from another planet. And it is the first thought to enter his mind now, when he runs up to you and cradles your face in his hands, his touch infinitely, impossibly gentle, and you look at him like heâs everything that has ever existed, everything that ever will.Â
Tendrils of your body spray reach him from here, floral and light like a tropical coastline. He couldâve counted your eyelashesâif he didnât have something far better to do.
âTell me now if you donât want me to do this,â he whispers.
A stupid smile crosses the face of the smartest person he knows. âMy lips are sealed.â
Hyunjin kisses you. He kisses you until the banner around your shoulders is wrinkled under his touch, until your hands are tangled in his hair and aching his scalp, until the breaths you take are breaths you share, passed between your mouths like a puff of smoke before theyâre colliding again.
He kisses you until heâs crying, again, until heâs no longer tasting your lips but your grin, and he kisses you only harder when those scornful stars start to dance before him, for you are his, not theirs, and heâs really won everything, now.
âHwang, I need you in my office.â
Six months later, Hyunjin sees Coach Bang standing a few yards away with a grim air about him. He stops in his footsteps and glances at his captain, confused.
âI know nothing,â Seungmin says, walking away. âGood luck!â
âThanks, cap.â Hyunjin swears heâs had this exact exchange before.
Head volleyball coach Christopher Bangâs workspace still reminds Hyunjin of a morgue. But there are two picture frames on his desk now: one of his family in front of the Sydney Opera House, the other of a band of boys clad in navy blue, draped over one another in exhausted bliss. The latter lends the room a much-needed sense of vitality. Too bad it still houses a rusty cyborg.
Hyunjin closes the door and takes a seat. Bang taps a knuckle against the tempered glass of his monitor. âRead.â

In a park about a ten minute walk away, a small crowd of elderly people are scattered across a few stone tables, hunched over the fading chess boards painted into the granite surfaces. Mrs. Choi whisks away Mrs. Baekâs king with a triumphant yelp.
âI knew it, I knew it, I knew it! That opening is unbeatable!â She swivels towards you, shaking a fist threateningly. âYou! Get over here. Your reign is over.â
You are sitting cross-legged in the shade of a broad magnolia tree, clearing out your storage. You tried to take a picture of a particularly rotund pigeon to send to Hyunjin earlier and couldnât even do that. It was then you decided you couldn't live like this anymore.
âAs excited as I am to beat you again, Mrs. Choi, I need ten more minutes,â you call back.Â
She presents you with an unpleasant hand gesture. You turn your attention back to your phone, grinning. Two new notifications sit at the top of your lock screen.
Hyunjin: Omw now. Sorry had to talk to Chris Hyunjin: Same park? Y/N: yes Hyunjin: Whoâs our opponent today Y/N: mrs. choi Hyunjin: Not that bitch again Y/N: ?
Heâll be here in eight minutes.
You return to the task at hand. Youâve already cleared out your apps, your documents, and videos; all thatâs left is the audio files. You conduct a quick mental review. Surely youâll live without your downloaded music and accidental voice memos.
Instead of hitting the âdeleteâ button, you extract a pair of tangled earphones from your jacket pocket.
You go back to your texts with Hyunjin, open the shared attachments tab, and scroll for a long time before you find the voice note he sent you seven months ago.
He finds you a sobbing mess.
âHey, hey, whoa.â Heâs on his knees in an instant, gathering your hands into his, a world of concern in the brown of his eyes. Your earbuds fall out and clatter onto the cement below. âBaby, whatâs happening? Are you okay?â
âYes,â you say in a flustered haste. âYes, Iâm okay. I donâtâI donât really know whatâs happening.â
âDid that hag do this to you?â He asks this question so seriously. âIâll beat up a senior citizen, I donât give a fuckââ
âNo!â You let out an ugly laugh through your tears. âNo, no. Leave Mrs. Choi alone.â
âThen what is it? Whatâs wrong?â
Eventually, your vision clears enough for you to look at the man kneeling in front of you. His roots grow out longer every day, his hair by now nearly equal parts gold and black. A spot of sunlight infiltrates the magnolia leaves and lands on his left eye, turning it the hue of melted bronze.
Your fingers drift to the sides of his beautiful face as you lean in close; he smells like a combination of smoky rose and tropical coastlines.
âIâll tell you later,â you murmur, pressing a kiss to his hairline.Â
He is dissatisfied with this, hooking a pointer finger beneath your chin, guiding your face back to his. He laves the saltwater from your lips, your tongue, and then youâre smiling again, barely able to remember why you cried in the first place.
You rest your foreheads together. âHave I told you that you look like a bumblebee these days?â
He smiles. âDoes that make you my flower, then?â
âBecause youâre irresistably drawn to me?â
âNo, because I wanna put my pollen inââ
You shove him away. âYou are grotesque.â
He returns in a flash. âYou love me.â
You kiss him again. And again. And one more time for good measure, during which you mumble I do against his lips, and then you remember something.
âWhy did Coach hold you back, by the way?â You pull away, tuck a strand of hair behind his ear. âAre you in trouble again?â
âNo, no. The opposite, actually.â
Your brow furrows. âThe opposite? Whatââ
âIn this lifetime, please,â Mrs. Choi hollers from the chess tables. You roll your eyes. Hyunjin smiles helplessly.
âDuty calls, my love.â
âTell me your thing later too?â
âOf course.â
You dust yourself off and stand up, making your way to the battleground. But not before you whisper to Hyunjin, ânow watch me beat up a senior citizen.â
He laughs with his whole body, his eyes the shape of crescent moons, his mouth a little rectangle.
âHypocrite.â
Hyunjin: [1 Audio Message]
This is my seventh take and Iâm not recording an eighth. What you get is what you get. I donât care anymore.
I understand if you donât wanna talk about what happened at the arcade. I wouldnât, either. I just wanted to say that you donât have to do this tutoring thing anymore. I wonât be able to fulfill my end of our deal, soâŠyeah, it wouldnât be fair to you. Youâve already done so much for us. For me.
As for team manager, youâll have to talk to Minho and Coach Bang if you wanna quit. Doesnât sound like a fun conversation, I knowâbut if thatâs what you decide, Iâll have your back. They donât scare me. Well, they do. But only sometimes.
Youâve beenâŠdistant, this week. Iâve known peace and quiet for the first time since we met, and I fucking hate it. I realized I couldnât care less if youâre my tutor or my team manager or whateverâI just donât want you to be a stranger. Maybe thatâs selfish of me to say, but Iâm tired of pretending the idea of losing you doesnât terrify me. It does. It really fucking does.
Iâm gonna end this here, because I almost just stopped recording on accident and Iâll genuinely commit homicide if I have to do all this again. Sorry that this got so long, andâŠIâm sorry about everything. You deserve better.
Come back to me whenever youâre ready, okay? Iâll be waiting.

Urgent đïž call: đšđ Please help..đ„șđđ
My name is Falastin, and I am a mother of three small children, ages 5 years, 2 years, and 3 months. I am not very good with social media, but I am writing to seek your help to give my family in Gaza the chance to live their lives again.
Due to the ongoing genocide we in Gaza are experiencing, my family need your help to survive, leave Gaza, and find safety.
In november 2023 last year, i lost three of my cousins from my mother's family with their wifes and children's, some of them still under the rubble untill now.Â
In mars 2024 this year i lost another 2 cousins in Alshifa hostpital, this shock after three months of the first lose was a big slap into our face, it was a harsh reminder that death didnât stop, and that none of us is an exception in this genocide, not a woman nor a child, everyone of us is a target to the death machines above our heads.
My family has lost everything. Some of them have tragically passed away, and those who remain are without shelter, moving from one temporary place to another in a desperate attempt to stay alive. Currently "After more than 20 times of being displaced and having to leave our house escaping from rockets and death " they have fled south and are living in a makeshift tent made from plastic bags and torn clothes.
Each day is a battle for survival. Each day, my family wakes up not knowing if they will have food to eat, clean water to drink, or a safe place to rest. Their homes have been wiped, and their children sit sleepless waiting their death. In Gaza, there is no where to seek shelter, no bunkers, nowhere to hide. Gaza is no more than 40 kilometers long and 10 kilometers wide with a population of just over two million. Gaza's border is completely surrounded by fences and barbed wire. The only way out of Gaza is to Egypt.
I used to introduce myself as the youngest in the family but in this GENOCIDE Iâm a big sister who see her siblingsâ future getting lost in front of her eyes, as i see my brothers kids who are still young and supposed to be in school, my mom who is 73 years old unable to find her medicine, as I see them, I made it a mission to myself to save my family or whoâs left alive from it, to save their future from all of this and to escape Gaza.
Despite everything, I still have hope to save those who remain of my family. But I need all the help I can get from every person on earth. This challenge is not easy for me, especially since I am not good with social media and i dont have so many follower to reach and ask them for help. However, I am trying, and maybe with your support, the impossible can become possible.
Asking for your help is the only way I have to save my familyâs life and future. Your help can be our hope when hope seems far away. Because of that, I appeal to your generosity and compassion, asking for help so that we can gather the necessary funds to help my family.
Photos of "Lina," who was born at the start of the war, and she is now 9 months old. Your donation could give her the chance to survive, leave Gaza, and find safety with her family.
I would like to thank everyone who has donated, shared and supported my campaign so far. Your generosity has given us hope in the darkest of times, and I am deeply grateful.
So far, we have raised 3,950 SEK of our 2,000,000 SEK goal - August 15th. While this is a small step, it is a crucial one, and it shows that together, we can make a difference. We still have a long way to go, and I urge you to continue sharing our story and contributing if you can.
Every donation, no matter the size, brings us closer to saving my family and giving them a chance at life. Please read and act as if it were your family, your mother, your siblings in these conditions. đđđđđđđ

Hello,Do you have any tips for recovering from internet brain rot? It's like my patience has dried up and if there's a huge amount of text (even about topics I'm very interested in) that I have to read, I get annoyed and just don't interact with the material at all.
I have multiple tips!
TL;DR (Because of course I generated a wall of text): Take a break from the internet, create a schedule for getting yourself used to reading longer texts, take breaks while reading, and perhaps reconsider how you interact with The Internet and the world in general.
Here are the basic "to reduce the brain rot just don't interact" tips:
Take a break. Give yourself time off from The Internet (for these purposes The Internet is the social media industrial complex; clickbait news, recommended videos, social media sites, etc. You don't have to totally check out of email or your local news site, just get away from the huge time sucks). I'd say to take at least one day a week where you're online for less than an hour a day, and to maybe work up to doing a week-long break from whatever the main agents of rot are.
Once you've identified the main agents of rot, give yourself a time limit or set up rules for yourself. I don't let myself look at social media in bed, for instance; no staying up late on my phone, no scrolling before I get up and start my day. I don't give myself a strict time limit anymore, but for a while there I was very firm about "you only get to go online 4 hours a day" with myself.
Don't comment (or at least only share the things you really want to share). If you feel the need to argue, or if you feel pressured into sharing something, don't. Step back, maybe even open the post in a new tab or send it to yourself, and come back later. If you've been thinking about it and have decided it IS something you care enough to talk about, share it. If you look at the tab and feel stressed out or still feel reactive, close the tab and walk away.
Go out and interact with the real world in a non-work capacity for a few hours a week; take walks or go shopping or go out and take pictures of insects. Touch grass so that The Internet is not the only thing you're doing with your downtime.
Here are the "work on reading longer texts specifically" tips:
Set a reading goal for yourself. Maybe you want to read one New Yorker article a week, maybe you want to read all the way through news articles, maybe you want to read novels like you used to in high school. Figure out what your actual goal is and articulate that goal to yourself.
Set up a practice schedule and gradually increase the amount of time you're reading. Don't go from short tumblr posts to a novella, go from short tumblr posts to slightly longer news articles, then to slightly longer essays, then to a novella. You can do this in literal paragraphs if you want to - maybe your goal for your first day is to read five paragraphs in a row, and the second day is seven, and the third day is ten, etc, until you are comfortably reading for longer amounts of time without counting paragraphs. (Try this with books from gutenberg.org; read a classic you haven't read a few paragraphs at a time and if you find yourself going over your paragraph count, let yourself run with it. If you finish a book, good for you, find another one and start again.)
Set up a maintenance schedule. If your goal is to read longer news pieces, try to read a longer piece every week and try to read to the end of every news article you open. If your goal is to read novels or longer nonfiction, try to read a book a month (maybe setting aside dedicated time each week to read, maybe Thursday evenings are book time now). If you find yourself falling back into old habits, take a break from The Internet and do some more rigorous practice for a while.
If you find yourself getting frustrated while you are reading you can also take a break! Read until you get frustrated and then *instead of switching to a different page or closing the article* close your eyes or look out the window or away from the screen for thirty seconds (count 'em! count out the time in your head) and then continue reading. You can also take a longer pause and sit and think about why you're getting frustrated. Is it the subject matter? Is it just looking at this text for longer than a couple minutes (if you are experiencing FOMO because you're reading for another few minutes instead of scrolling, the harder tips at the bottom are going to be important to you)? Are you comfortable? Are you reading this text to procrastinate from something and the procrastination is making you nervous? Are you trying to read to the bottom of your dash and reading a long post is taking up more time than you want while scrolling? Are you bored? Genuinely and very seriously: are your eyes straining and does your head hurt (if this is the case when is the last time you had your eyes checked or your glasses prescription updated)?
Here are the much harder "examine yourself and reassess your reactions to things" tips:
Work on re-training your attention span.
Identify something that you enjoy and find deeply engaging, and schedule some dedicated time for that thing. Set a literal timer (it can be a short amount of time at first) and sit down and do the thing without switching to a different website or opening up an app on your phone. This can be re-reading or watching a couple episodes of a show you like or listening to your favorite album while you sit down and draw. What's important is to spend a longer time focusing on doing something you DO like before attempting to spend a longer time focusing on something you DON'T like.
When you're starting on things you DON'T like, start with things you mildly don't like, or that feel tedious but aren't actually unpleasant. One way I do this is by transcribing poetry; I look up poems that I connect to and I transcribe them into a notebook that I have for that purpose. I enjoy having the finished product, but I don't enjoy the process, so it takes some effort to stick with it. Maybe there is a boring book you have been trying to get through, maybe you need to detail your car, maybe you've been trying to take up embroidery - these are good things to make yourself pay attention to (having music or a podcast on can help, but avoid watching videos or opening social apps)
When you're okay at that kind of thing (doing something not actively unpleasant) work on your attention span for things you ACTIVELY don't like. I don't think you should be a masochist about this, but you should work on being okay with doing unpleasant things for a sustained period of time. All of us have to do unpleasant stuff sometimes, and it's better to be able to pay attention to it for an hour at a time than it is to put it off forever.
This leads into the next Big Tip which is:
Work on being less reactive
Find something that you dislike; I'm going to use conservative talk radio as my example.
Expose yourself to the disliked thing for short periods of time (under ten minutes, maybe under five minutes).
Work on moderating your emotions during the time spent exposed to the disliked thing. If it makes you angry, work on intellectualizing the anger without becoming agitated by it. If it makes you sad, work on accepting that sadness without letting it drag down your mood. This isn't precisely about becoming numb to stimuli, but it is about being more in control of how your emotional reactions impact you.
Analyze the disliked thing. Why does it make you angry? Is that on purpose by the creator of the thing? Would it make someone else angry in the same way? How would you explain the anger to a neutral third party?
Consider responding instead of reacting. Let's say you're seeing a lot of very sad and upsetting things online and it's making you sad and upsetting you. You re-share these things because you don't feel like there's anything else you can do or you get angry when you see people sharing incorrect information, perhaps you argue with people about this. Now try looking at the upsetting things through the lens of point number four. This has upset you; how has it upset you? And once you've thought about how it upset you and have articulated that to yourself, find out what you can DO. I cannot make conservative talk radio go off the air, but I can support the groups harmed by conservative talk radio; thus there is no point in me getting upset and angry about conservative talk radio when I could be helping the people they target instead.
And that gets us to the last big tip which is:
Ask yourself if you are spending your time in a way that is enjoyable and edifying.
We all have limited time in our days and limited time in our lives. If you are finding yourself frequently frustrated online, it's a good time to consider whether you want to be spending so much time online.
If you feel like The Internet has become a rat race in which you can't read more than a few paragraphs without getting frustrated, there's a good chance that not only are you spending too much time on The Internet, but you're also spending it on doing things that you don't particularly like.
A realization like yours, Anon, that you are getting frustrated with any longer texts, can actually be really helpful because it provides a good opportunity to look at what you're engaging with and consider the questions:
Is this something I enjoy?
Do I feel good when I do this thing?
And that's a great way to figure out how to get rid of things that are leading to your background frustration. Maybe that looks like paring down the list of blogs you follow, maybe that looks like unsubscribing from some youtubers and podcasts, maybe that looks like uninstalling apps, maybe that looks like blocking a whole bunch of people and terms on your socials.
I don't think that everything we do has to help us grow as a person or expand our consciousness or anything like that, but I do think it's important to prioritize doing things that you like and doing things that you feel good about.
Like, I'm not doing something *wrong* if I spend an afternoon on Youtube watching drama channels every once in a while, but if I come out of a few afternoons of watching youtube drama channels feeling restless and anxious and like I wasted my time - even if I enjoyed myself while I was watching - it's probably a good idea for me to take a break from drama channels and see if there's something I can do instead that will make me feel better.
ALSO, A NOTE:
You are an animal that requires significant enrichment in your enclosure.
Think about tigers. Tigers in captivity are going to be excited to get high-value treats for any reason. They will eat and enjoy the treats. But if a tiger in captivity is only given the treats and never given any other form of activity to engage with, it is not going to be a happy tiger. If you start putting their treats in a pumpkin or a puzzle feeder or giving them toys to play with, that is going to be a much happier tiger.
Please give your brain things to play with that are more than just treats (though it does need some treats!). Make yourself a happy tiger. Your brain need a puzzle feeder, not a treat button.
