Unbreakable Bond
(A/N): This is based on this post and this tiktok
Summary: A big age gap between Aaron's children doesn't have to mean that they are unable to form a strong bond
Warnings: Mentions of Haley's death and failed relationships
Wordcount: 1.8k
✨Masterlist✨
_________________________________
His life took turns Aaron never expected. It’s not the “Oh, mh, well that was unexpected”-type of turns, I talk about the “God played Cards Against Humanity with angels and decided to make it happen for someone”-type. But looking back he would not want to change a thing.
After Haley and Beth he was convinced that God, the Universe, something out there shared the opinion that romantic love isn’t the right thing for him and Aaron accepted that fact. Even more when he and Jack went into witness protection. I mean, when you are worried about the life of your family being in danger because of a stalker, you don’t think about the beautiful neighbor, who lives next door, right? Right?
Well, without going into too much detail, Hotch did think about her and she about him and vice versa. Everything went good until Aaron received the message that the team found the stalker and that it was safe to come back. He decided to come clean to his girlfriend. They talked about the possibility of moving back to Quantico.
In the end they decided in favor of the move, the final argument was the surprising announcement of her being pregnant. Hotch wants to raise their youngest where his and Jack’s roots are located. But he decides against taking a position at the BAU, instead taking a desk job in order to be more at home. He also has the opportunity to work from home after little (Y/N) was born and continues to do so until she is old enough to go to Kindergarten. Even then he takes two days the week where he stays home. Aaron learned from his decisions and mistakes he made in the past and wants to live up to them and be a better father and husband than before.
And Hotch keeps it to this day, six years later. It’s (Y/N)’s first day of school, while Jack just graduated high school and goes off to college in a few weeks. Even though they have an age gap from twelve and a half years, their parents are sure there are no other siblings with such a strong bond.
Ever since his baby sister’s birth Jack is her biggest supporter, protector and friend. Her first word was his name, though it was more of a “ACK!”, but that’s the best nickname he ever got. As soon as (Y/N) was old enough to comprehend the concept of movies, he introduced her to Star Wars. Since then lightsaber wars out of cardboard pipes are not uncommon. Last Halloween they even dressed up as Chewbakka and Han Solo. You get three guesses on who was who.
“JACK!” (Y/N) runs into her big brother’s room with an excited expression on her face. “Daddy promised to buy me a real lightsaber after I read ten books! With lights and sounds and all! Isn’t that cool?” Jack smiles. Aaron did a similar thing with him. For a certain amount of books he got a reward they discussed beforehand. This way he felt motivated to read and improved writing and reading skills.
“This is awesome. I think that means we have to go book shopping together, what do you think?” (Y/N) is not only the cool kid that has an older brother, she is also the cool kid, whose older brother has a drivers license, a car and a part time job. She nods with big eyes, speechless, because the offer sounds like heaven to her. Getting books and one on one time with Jack after he was really busy with school for weeks? This has to be heaven.
“Ok, then you put your outside clothes on and I’ll tell Dad about our plan.” At that the little girl rushes to her room, not wanting to waste any more time. Jack makes his way down to the kitchen, where Aaron wipes the table from lunch down.
“Dad, I take (Y/N) to this bookstore in DC and we’ll probably go eat ice cream after that. Is that alright?” Hotch looks up at his son. It still feels like yesterday as he told Haley that Gideon is a big no as a baby name. Now he is all grown up and just a few weeks away from the next big chapter in his life.
“Of course, just let me get my wall-” Jack cuts him off. “No need, I want to use this as a kind of goodbye thing. At least until Thanksgiving.” Aaron knows what he means. It’s his last day before he goes off to college and just a couple more until the first classes begin. The family still hasn’t told their youngest exactly what’s going on. Else she would refuse to go to school and go on with her day, insisting on using all the time they have until Jack drives off.
Two hours later the siblings leave the bookstore, both of them having a bag in their hands. Of course Jack's heavier, but both he and the cashier assured (Y/N) that they lift the same amount of weight.
“Uncle Spence will be excited when I tell him that I read Harry Potter, he told me so many good things about it”, the girl gushes. Jack nods, indicating that he is listening. Of course they also picked books that are not that advanced. Still, no sister of his shall grow up without knowing the beauty of the wizarding world. Also, secretly he is hoping for her to turn out as nerdy as he is so they get more things to talk about. His next step is superheroes, especially the Marvel ones.
They converse until they get to an ice cream parlor and order both their usuals. “Do you think you are ready for me to tell you something important?” The older one asks after they sit down at a table. (Y/N) nods, confusion taking over her face.
“Uhm, you know how I graduated from high school? I’m done with school, but I want to get a degree, but for that I have to go to college. It’s pretty far away so I can’t come home for a few months. But I’m back home when Thanksgiving is and also for Christmas.” It doesn’t matter what Jack says, a sad frown has formed on the little one’s face. “Oh. And after Christmas, will you leave again?” He nods and explains when he is off from college and when not.
“We can always skype and write letters. How does that sound? And when you get your first phone, we can even text.” That (Y/N) lights up a bit. For her first year of school she got a stationary set and is eager to use it to this day.
“I’m going to miss you so much”, she says hugging her big brother. Jack pats her back. “I’ll miss you, too.”
The goodbye the next day is a heartfelt matter. Everybody cries, especially (Y/N). She can’t fathom a scenario where her brother isn’t there for her all the time.
The following weeks are also hard for the family. The youngest refuses to sleep alone for the first three days after Jack’s leave. She is more closed off and mainly just does her school work or reads the books he bought for her. By the time Thanksgiving is only away for another two weeks, (Y/N) has read through all of them at least two times.
Her father already ordered the lightsaber he promised her. Unfortunately shipping takes several months, so the little girl still has to wait patiently for her reward to arrive. In the meantime she works on getting the next and she is already pretty close to the comic book collection she wants.
“Sweetheart, can you set the table, please? Your Mom will be here soon from grocery shopping and she will need help getting them from the car into the house”, Hotch calls for his daughter while stirring in a pot.
The little girl nods, putting her stationary set and pens aside to do as her father asked. She is in the middle of answering her brother’s last letter, telling him that she is now the one that usually has to read aloud for the class because of her advanced skill for a first grader.
Just as she sets the last piece of silverware down the doorbell rings. “Sweetie, can you please open it? This should be your mother.” Happily (Y/N) runs up and turns the door knob. Over the last few months she hit a small growing spurt and is finally tall enough to reach it without standing on her tippy toes.
“Mo-” She nearly chokes on her own saliva. The one at the door is definitely not her mother. “JACK!” (Y/N) runs up to him and jumps onto his leg. “Hey Princess. I thought now that you read your books, we need to hold the most amazing lightsaber fight in history.” With a mischievous smile he pulls two from his back, giving one to his baby sister.
It is the most epic fight in history between an elementary schooler and a college boy. They can only be stopped by their parents announcing that it is a tie between both of them and that they have to sit down, else the food gets cold.
The following weeks mostly consist of (Y/N)’s joyous laughs and cuddling with her big brother. She even insists on him sleeping with her in her much smaller bed. On his last night before going back to college, the little girl turns to him in the middle of watching her favorite movie in the living room.
“Do you promise not to forget me when you are away? Because I alway think about you and tell my friends so much about you. I told them you are a hero, my hero, just like Daddy. They wanna meet you because of that.” Jack has to hold back tears at her statement.
“I also think of you so much. All of my friends at college are pretty jealous of me having such a sweet baby sister. Maybe one time you can visit me and I can introduce you to them.” The thought of that makes (Y/N) smile and is a little consolation to the thought of her brother leaving again.
Aaron watches the interaction going down, happy to see the strong bond between his children, despite their age gap. This is nothing like he and Sean were and that is a relief for him and the worries he had in the beginning. It is a sign that he did do some things right as a father.

Having JB and JJ as your best friends since always is the best thing ever, you three meet when you were just little kids and everything was perfect at the time. Their parents weren't something chaotic yet, but your life didn't change a bit.
You still had both of your parents and they loved you more than anything in this world, but in their case was something different.
JJ had lost his mother, his dad became an alcoholic and drug addict, and he had a few problems with anger that always gave JJ more bruises then you wanted to think or see. John B's mom went away when he was just a baby and his father went missing, a few years after that.
They don't have parents at all.
And that makes you feel so bad every single time because they're just such good boys, that deserve the hole love of the world for them, but the people that were born to love them the most on the world, just don't. And because you never felt what they must feel every day, looking around the house and not seeing a mom making breakfast or a dad watching the football match from yesterday, that he didn't watch because you two were fishing, swimming or just having fun together...
That's why you are always showing to them how much you love them, saying good things about them, holding them when they need someone... Always doing things that they're parents should.
You would be the one to bring more food to the chateau so they could have anything to eat for days, you would bring a few blankets when it was cold, you would clean around their house and cook - you first sucked at it, but you learned so you could make food for them -, you would even buy a few clothes for them as noticing that something was missing... You would look after them.
But something that you can't control is your feelings, so you ended falling for JJ, and, for your surprise, he felt the same way about you. But you could separate the moments you acted like a girlfriend and the moments that you had to be his mom.
You just did all of it for them 'cause they deserve it and 'cause you adore them.
And seeing them, right now, looking at you with angry faces and asking you the same question for the past minutes - that you didn't pay attention to count -, just broke your heart in a million pieces.
You just acted like that boring girl to help them. You want just the best and anything else to them because you love them because they deserve and need someone to take care of them.
"[y/n], I'm done asking why you act like that. We just want to understand why you are like this with us, we're not kids!" JB said angrily and you only sat at the couch from John B's living room, trying to normalize breath.
"Bro, chill. She'll answer us, just calm down." JJ tried to stay calm to not push any pressure on you because that boy knew too well how much you hated to be under pressure.
The two of them stayed quiet and looking at you waiting for an answer, while all you could do was try to control your breaths so weren't going to cry in front of them - that was the last thing that you wanted to do right now.
"It's just that..." You started and tried blinked the tears that started to blurry your vision away. "I want to protect you..." Your breathing started to get heavier by the seconds and John B was going to say something, but you stopped him. "Just let me finish, okay?" The boys just looked at each other and then nodded at you. "My parents do everything for me, they take care of me, they love me... But I think about you two and the unique people that were made to love you, just don't. And you don't deserve any of all of what you pass through, so I try to avoid it." At this moment, you couldn't control your tear anymore and even JJ was trying to clean his wet cheeks with the back of his hand. "I love you too much to just watch, I have to help you the way that I can, and I know that my love won't ever be able to get close to the one that you should get, but it can be a distraction or even help at any other way a little bit... I want to make sure that you know you're not alone and that I love you two." You said and sighted, so you could finish your thoughts. "So, the reason that I'm always bringing food, organizing the house, buying new clothes for you, paying attention to how many beers you drink, taking care when any of you gets sick, making breakfast, bringing blankets when it's cold and all the other stuff you were complaining about, is because you deserve to be loved and I love you."
Your red and puffy eyes locked with the baby blue ones and then meet the bright brown ones. All of you were with teary eyes, but you were the one that cried the most.
JJ and John B just looked at each other and looked like they were talking by their thoughts or sharing the same one because the two of them just came to your direction at the same time and hugged you.
They were so different from each other, but at the same time, they were so much alike. Well, they held you for the same reason, but you were able to differentiate them by the way they were hugging your little body against theirs. John B was holding your torso with both of his arms, trying to bring you impossibly close. And JJ was with one arm around your hips and the other one holding your shoulders, trying to stop the way that they were shaking and breaking his heart together.
JB was feeling so guilty by pushing you to say all of that for them, while JJ was feeling shitty by being able to read you like an open book, but never even dreaming about something like this, and you were wanting to hold them and never let them go.
So you hold them. With your trembling and soft hands, you held the blond locks of JJ's hair so he wouldn't take his head off of your shoulder - and you could still fell his shaky breaths hitting your neck and hear his low sniffs and sobs -, and the back of John B's neck so he wouldn't move his head and took his chin out of the top of your hair. Your hands were so delicate that if anyone else saw the way you were touching them would think that they were made by glass and you were afraid to break it. JJ just noticed that one of your hands was lost in his hair when you started to play with it.
And you three stayed there for God knows how long, until John B took his arms off your torso and you took your hand off of him. But JJ wouldn't let go of you so early, so he brought both of his arms to your waist, hugging you from behind.
"Sarah wanted for me to call her after talking to you..." JB said and you knew pretty well that he was asking if he could call someone else at the moment, and you just smiled at him, that understood that he could call her and that you wouldn't be mad at him. "Would it be a problem if I go to spend the night there?"
He had never asked that to you, maybe because he never slept at any other place that wasn't his own house but with the way that John B was expectantly looking at you. He was asking for your permission to spend the night at Sarah's.
To anyone else, that question would make them think that he was being crazy to ask your permission to sleep at his girlfriend's house, but you noticed how things would change after the talk you just had...
"Of course not, just don't forget to text me when you get there." You said and the smile that John B gave to you, made everything you ever did feel worthy. JB got another outfit that you were pretty sure he would wear on the next day on the HMS POGUE and went to the van.
JJ's arms around you always felt that they belonged there and you could get used to his scent and warm body against yours so easily... Your thoughts were stopped by the felling of sweet and soft kisses at your bare left shoulder and blond locks lightly tickling the side of your neck and jawline. Your head tilted slightly to give JJ more bare skin to kiss and your left got lost in his hair, while your right one interlocked fingers with one of his hands.
"J..." Your voice betrayed you by going out as a whisper, but it caught his attention that just hummed against your soft skin as an answer and you knew you could continue. "Could we just cuddle today?"
Your voice was low and begrudging and you hoped that JJ wouldn't notice it, but he did. And you didn't even need to explain why, because he already saw that you were afraid that he would want to have sex and just the fact that you weren't in the mood, would make him upset.
"And I thought you would never ask..." JJ whispered in your ear, sending a shiver pass through your spine and you didn't need to look at him to know that he is smiling, just like you.
You pulled him by the hand that was already in contact with yours to his bedroom, as he closed the door, your hands slipped away from each other and you grabbed one of the shirts that you bought to JJ, putting it on after taking off your bikini's top. When you looked at JJ's bed, you saw him wearing just his boxers and a huge smile with open arms and grabby hands. You chuckled seeing your hot ass boyfriend just with his black boxers, looking like a little boy.
But you didn't waste any time going there with him and holding his huge body against yours. JJ immediately dropped his head at his favorite place, between your breasts with one of his arms holding your waist against the bed and the other one going under your shirt and rubbing your back with his thumb. His cold hand made your whole body flinch and he just giggled, kissing your collarbone through his shirt. One of your hands started to play with his hair and the other was lightly caressing his wide and muscular back with your nails.
The boy loved when your nails barely touched his back and the way it sends goosebumps all over his body.
And it tickles.
"Love." JJ's voice got muffled by his shirt and your skin, but you still listened and looked down at him, that was already looking at you with his chin resting at your chest. "'Just wanted to say that I love you." He softly and passionately kissed your lips and lied back between your breasts.
You couldn't ask for a better life, a better boyfriend, or either for better boys to take care of. You loved JJ and JB, and if you were with them, you were safe, happy, and loved. And you knew that when you need them, they'll be there for you, just like you always did for them.

WandaVision Episode 1 Reaction
Spoilers below!!
I enjoy the music over the marvel logo
But also a 43 second logo feels kinda long for a 29 minute episode- is it just for the premier or is this gonna happen before each ep?
Also I’m pretty sure I’ve heard that there is a title sequence, which will probably be similar in length. Combine that with the lengthy credits people have been complaining about, it seems that the percentage of the thirty minutes that is actually the story is lower than it should be
not that I don’t love a good title sequence! But I’ll take a well fleshed out episode over fancy logos, title sequences and credits any day
now that I’ve got that of my chest, on to the actual show
I like how they have the frame shaped like that of an old timey tv, combined with the black and white it really adds to the old timey sit come vibe
I like these bells
Ok I know I complained about to much time being wasted with logos and such, but i LOVE how cheesy this theme song is and I love them showing vision and Wanda driving tp there house in wedding attire
“A regular husband and wife” 2 seconds late *vision disappears into a cloud of sparkles*.... 1 minute 8 seconds in and I love this
Even there acting is reminiscent of an old timey sit com this is amazing
feel like I should note he title sequence ends at the 1.36 mark approximately, which may not seem like a lot but again the show is less than thirty minutes so it adds up
Wanda talks with a fifties accent: I already love this show
Also I wish I had magic I could use to clean, I’m moving back into my dorm right now and Wanda’s powers would be SO helpful
Also I LOVE the laugh track
Also Wanda’s short curly hair is so cute
I love how neither of them knows what the heart means so they play it off by being like “yeah of course I know what it means, how could I forget? Do YOU remember what it means
Also Vision is literally part computer shouldn’t he have a photographic memory?
Also how old is Wanda? I could have sworn someone said she was 19 in civil war, which would make her like 21 here? I think?? Idk tho, as a 19 year old I don’t think she has ever looked 19 in the movies, even back in Ultron she looked at least in her mid twenties
The face Vision makes when he makes himself human is so funny
Also Vision blowing Wanda a kiss and her reaching back to grab it is the perfect amount of corny that makes it still cute
Also I wonder what vision’s job is
The backing music is so funny
I can already tell Agnes is going to be some great comic relief in a show that’s already hilarious
“I assure you, I’m married. To a man. A HUMAN one!” I know I’ve said before that I was never the biggest fan of Wanda or Vision but I love Wanda in this show
Obv there is something clearly off here, but I feel like I need to mention that it’s clear this is some warped reality. If I had never seen any of the MCU before, I may believe it was just witch and her robot husband living in the fifties, but the little details really make it clear to the audience (the majority of whom I am sure are familiar with the mcu) that something is off. This scene is one of those, where Wanda cannot seem to recall how long her and Vision have been together and plays it off by saying “It feels like we always have been together”
Is Agnes giving Wanda advice for the bedroom? is this really what I’m watching? Or have I wildly misinterpreted this?
Love the old timey lingo
Vision working a desk job is so funny
Love that vision doesn’t even know what they do at his job, I know it’s part of the false reality thing but also lowkey relatable
“you’re like a walking computer” “I most certainly am not! I’m a regular carbon-based employee made entirely of organic matter”
I started this like twenty minutes ago and have only gotten 7 minutes in because I keep stopping to type my reactions. I am going to try to shut up and watch, and stop screaming about every little detail for a bit 😂
Real quick though does Vision just go by Vision at work?
Ope apparently he does.
I wonder if Vision took Wanda’s last name
Or is he Vision Stark-Banner since it was Tony and Bruce who made him??
He probably isn’t called that but I think it would be funny if he was
Love that instead of writing “dinner with boss” or “Dinner w/ Harts” or even just “Harts” he drew a freaking heart like im dying
if my lack of emojis seems weird I’m typing this on a computer which I never normally do and I’m to lazy to pull up the emoji keyboard, so basically imagine there’s a cry laughing emoji after everything funny
“No skeletons in the closet?’ “I don’t have a skeleton sir.”
Yup I was right, Agnes is giving her sexy time advice
“you should stumble when you walk in a room so he can catch you. It’s romantic!” that is the only way I will be flirting from now on
Also I got to say, I'm guessing it’s a fifties thing but those pointy bras don’t look comfortable
So she answers the phone “Vision Residence” Is Vision also their last name now? Does he go by Vision Vision??
They make the best facial expressions
This phone conversation where Wanda think they’re having a date night whereas Vision is talking about his boss coming for dinner is comedy GOLD
also I love the fact that they’re giving us stereotypical sitcom drama while keeping it clear that there are bigger problems than dinner with the boss
Fake commercial break is at 9.56 (these time stamps are for myself I want to calculate how much of the episode is actually the story)
I do love the fake commercials tho! And I suppose in a way they ARE part of the show
They missed the chance to make it the toastmate three thousand and make every ironman fan cry
The beeping toaster sounds like a ticking bomb..... also the little red light is the only color we’ve seen this episode I think
Commercial ends at 10.46
Also love that it was an SI toaster, still wish they had made it 3000 instead of 2000
How did Wanda confuse Mr. Hart with her husband? Not that I’m complaining, her coming out in a robe and covering Vis’ Boss’ eyes is HILARIOUS
“This is the traditional Sokovian greeting? Didn’t I tell you my wife is from Europe?” “How exotic!” “We don’t break bread with Bolsheviks”
Visions pants are SO high waisted
“It’s our anniversary!” “Our anniversary of WHAT?” “WELL IF YOU DON”T KNOW I”M NOT GONNA TELL YOU”
Poor Vision is trying to figure out what kind of company he works for this is sooo funny
Agnes coming in clutch with a full meal
So Wanda needs the ingredients in order to magic a meal she can’t just make one appear
Vision breaking into song was amazing
How did one chicken turn into like 30 eggs
Vision is singing old McDonald with his bosses wife this is great
“Diane!” “That must be my wife summoning me!” “She calls you Diane?” “Yes... it’s her pet name for me” “I’m coming... Fred”
So many clichés in this show but it’s done in such a purposeful way that it’s still funny
Also we have only seen three rooms: the kitchen, the living room and Vision’s workplace
“Well I think tonight’s going SWIMMINGLY”
Mrs. Hart is SO NOSY
But I love that they don’t know the answers
Wanda looks SO disturbed when Mr. Hart is demanding her and visions story, you can tell her mind is fighting itself and it’s so sad
Mr. Hart is choking, is it bad that I think he deserves it?
Mrs. Hart keeps cheerily repeating stop it, and gone is the stereotypical sitcom camera angles and and the backing music is switched for something eery
This is lowkey scary, Mr. Hart Dying while his wife keeps cheerily saying Stop It and it just feels creepier the more she repeats
Wanda looks distressed and vision is just looking to her for what to do, her old timey accent is gone and she sounds nearly robotic as she tells Vision to help
Poor Wanda, she is so clearly going through it mentally right now
Laugh track is back, and just like that the Harts are leaving, despite only having one bite of food
And somehow Mr. Hart is impressed? Was Wanda rewriting reality to make them so?
I know that this is clearly some alternate reality and nothing is right, but wanda and vision deciding to choose that day as there anniversary and this little convo here is soooooo cute
Aw her making them rings and them both saying I do is soooo cute
And vision saying “and they lived happily ever after’ is so sweet but also so sad in context
What is that little remote vision is holding meant to be?
And love the hexagon closing in on them with the cute music playing to end the episode
Are the people in these credits real? Because it lists the start as Wanda Maximoff and Vision but are the rest actual people?
So there is some sketchy dude watching the maybe fake credits so there's something going on there
The actual credits start with 7.13 left and I’ve been told there's no mid or post credits scene. I’ll let them play while I finish this up anyways
8 minutes and 49 seconds of this show is the logo, title sequence and credits. Out of 29.36 total this means only 20 minutes and 47 seconds is the show, which I suppose is standard for a sitcom but I think I felt deceived by it showing as 29 minutes
Also 50 seconds of “commercial takes the show time down to 19.57 if anyone was wondering
I swear tho I’m not all that bothered by the length, just did the math in case anyone was curious like I am.
I thought I was going to really enjoy this going it, but it still really surpassed my expectations and I can’t wait for episode 2!
This is my raw reactions, but I’m sure that as I mull it over more I’ll be posting more about the show
This is somehow a perfect combo of lighthearted comedy and mild horror
I wanna let this episode stew for a while, so I prob won’t watch episode 2 for at least a day
Also what are your guys’ thoughts on this format of reaction? Did I write to much?
Also what did y’all think of this episode? Feel free to let me know what you think of my reaction, and whether you agree or disagree. I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Marvel Movie Nights: The Amazing Spider-Man 2
You know, based on its reputation, and the fact that I really disliked the original film because it was a bad CW version of the origina Raimi film, I was ready to just hate this film. And... I didn’t? Don’t get me wrong, it’s not great, it’s totally got a Spider-Man 3 thing going with just too much going on. But, if I’m being honest, I kind of had fun with it? More so than the so incredibly tedious first film.
The plot is so convoluted and twisted into itself that it’s hard to talk about it as a whole. It’s trying to balance about six different things while attempting to set up an entire universe on its own. And, because of that, it kind of collapses in on itself like dying star. So, I’m gonna take this one chunk at a time...
First we have... Peter’s dead parents. Honestly, this is one of the elements that feels a little too much. A lot of it is contrived, especially in how his parents are tied to the spider experiments that made Peter Spider-Man in the first place. It feels like dumb movie logic, and this is the part, for me, that felt the most emotionally hollow (which is saying a lot because there’s a lot of cheap emotional beats in this film). I didn’t care, and this movie would have worked fine without any of it in it.
I’m gonna mention Aunt May next, because she has so little to do. Sally Field is great -- but there’s this weird subplot of her trying to be a nurse? She spends most of her time yelling or crying or yelling and crying, but it all amounts to about five minutes of screen time. I get what they were doing with it -- having read enough Spider-Man comics to realize that Aunt May has been somewhat of a one-note character for most of her existence -- but she feels so obligatory here that why even bother?
Alright, so let’s talk about Andrew Garfield again. Believe it or not -- I liked him so much better in this film! His Peter is still very lacking, and he makes some bizarre acting choices (as well as the fact that Peter’s basically a weirdo stalker in this film) but his Spider-Man is way less of a dick, and a lot more fun. That is... when he has someone to actually interact with, which brings me to...
Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacy. I didn’t get the chemistry thing from the first film, because the way the relationship plays out makes no sense. Well, it mostly makes no sense here, too, but there’s some really clear chemistry here -- and it’s so nice for Peter to actually have a grounded friend here, that this whole thing is actually the most enjoyable part of the film --- even if Peter is stalking her through half of it.
So, maybe I need a whole other post to talk about her death, but I’m kind of fascinated by this -- because it is one of comics most shocking moments. Seriously. It’s what ended the Silver Age of Comics and what pushed it to the Bronze Age, where comics were taken more seriously, and began to handle more realistic story lines. I think her death works here! It’s not set up very well -- I like a little more thematic in my superhero films -- but the actual scene is pretty good. I do have to laugh, a little, at the fact that Spider-Man clearly murders his own girlfriend, but because they have to end the movie, they kind of gloss over that with movie time montage. Anyway...
Villains! This story definitely has them. So -- there’s a ton of set up for the Sinister Six -- Black Cat is prowling around. BJ Novak was supposed to be someone. And of course Doc Ock’s hands are floating in some kind of liquid. And... Paul Giamatti in a giant Rhino suit, that’s kind of hilarious. Again, it’s too much. They’re trying so hard to set up, like, ten sequels that it kind of kills this one. It’s like Iron Man 2 but on steroids. There are also some evil lawyer types, too, which, whatever...
So, first big bad is Electro played by Jamie Foxx. He’s such a flat and ill-defined character. What are his powers? He’s like an electric Magneto. And so socially awkward that he has no personality and the basic emotional intelligence of a two year old. But that’s fine -- because the rest of the plot is only using him for his powers. It just feels... obligatory?
Meanwhile, there’s Harry Osborn coming in as the Green Goblin, and let me tell you, this shit is wild. The actor plays Harry like some kind of drugged up Leo DiCaprio. They awkwardly force a relationship with Peter after having zero set-up. Seriously - Peter just shows up one day. And then there’s the whole plot -- Harry is dying of some rare genetic disease that is literally making him the Green Goblin, and only Spider-Man’s blood can save him. After being thrown out of Oscorp because evil lawyer, he breaks out Electro so they can stop Spider-Man. And then at the end -- Harry is magically fine. It’s wild. And insane. Hilariously entertaining, but insane.
On the production side of things -- despite the fact that nothing about this film feels like it’s grounded in any kind of reality -- it’s not that bad. The CGI holds up pretty well. The action sequences are decent -- especially the third act, where I usually tap out, actually kept me pretty captivated. The score is fine, but not my favorite. And the film looks pretty clean and less dark than the original film.
Final Thoughts: While I did enjoy it despite the major flaws, it does make me miss Tom Holland -- I know all the fanboys want Spider-Man to work alone, but I think he does best when he actually has friends. :P
Next-Up: X-Men Days of Future Past. I have nothing snarky to add - this is actually a good film.

Zack Snyder's Justice League Review!
Zack Snyder's Justice League dir. Zack Snyder (2021) Warner Bros. Pictures, DC Films, Atlas Entertainment and The Stone Quarry Science Fiction, Action, Superhero Movie
Rating: 3.5 Waves
Summary: Tormented by visions of a dark future, Bruce Wayne aka The Batman attempts to gather a team of superheroes to defend the planet. When alien tyrant Steppenwolf arrives on Earth seeking a long forgotten technology, this group of heroes must do everything in their power to keep him from locating all three Mother Boxes and destroying the world.
Content warnings: Violence, Death, Body Horror, Gore
This review DOES NOT contain spoilers for Zack Snyder's Justice League
A bit of background for those of you thinking “Didn’t Justice League come out years ago?” You are exactly right! Justice League was released in theaters in 2017 and is the fifth movie in the DCEU (DC Extended Universe). The same company that produced Justice League then funded Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021) which is a different version of the story that was released in 2017. Zack Snyder was actually the original director of Justice League (2017), but he stepped away from the project during post production and the film was handed over to director Joss Whedon. Whedon’s creative decisions led to rewrites, heavy editing and a notorious reshoot that required removal of Henry Cavill’s mustache via CGI. Therefore, Justice League as it premiered in theaters in 2017 was Joss Whedon’s vision of the story. As some of you might remember, Justice League (2017) was considered a “flop” as it lost the studio ~$60 million overall and was received by fans with mixed to negative reviews (6.2/10 IMDB, 40% Rotten Tomatoes). But since Zack Snyder had left so late in the project, there were rumors that his version of the film had been nearly finished and there was hope that the movie Snyder filmed was actually better than what Whedon had created. Fans took to social media to demand that Warner Bros release the “Snyder Cut'' of Justice League and in a move I personally find baffling, Warner Bros actually gave Zack Snyder another $70 million to finish his version. Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021) which was released on HBO Max is the final product.
While understanding the context of how this movie came about is neat and honestly pretty hilarious, I never got around to see Justice League (2017) so I cannot give any commentary on whether this new film is any better. For those who are curious, my fiancée who has seen both says that the movies are extremely similar in plot, but there are significant changes to characterization and pacing. This review will solely be on the merits and shortfalls of Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021) in a spoiler free context since the movie was released just over a week ago (if you want to talk spoilers DM me I have So Many Thoughts).
Honestly, I was surprised how much I enjoyed this movie. My expectations were quite low considering what I heard about the original 2017 version and the fact that I’m more of a Marvel fan. The most surprising thing for me was that I sat through the entire 4 hr and 2 min runtime (for reference the runtime for Justice League (2017) is 2 hrs). Aside from Lord of the Rings (Return of the King runtime 4 hr 11min), I usually don’t indulge in movies that require me to block off an entire day, but I was curious and I love bandwagons.
The highlight of this movie are the characters. Each of our main characters had a deep, solid backstory that drew me in and made me invested in what was happening in this world. One thing lacking in a lot of ensemble superhero movies is balanced screen time between the main cast, but Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021) uses its time wisely to give each character depth and critical purpose in the narrative. Even the villain had compelling motivation as to why he is on earth doing dastardly deeds, and while I wasn’t rooting for him, I respected his motivations. I also appreciated that the writers of this movie made the characters intelligent. Sure, some decisions were driven more by emotion than logic, but the way defenses are set up and how our heroes use their unique powers left me incredibly impressed.
The characters’ interactions with each other was also very enjoyable. Snyder took the time to include scenes centered around the team chilling with each other in ways that were refreshingly low stakes and mundane. The story was interspersed with scenes like Wonder Woman and Alfred making tea, Aquaman and Wonder Woman musing over cultural differences, and Cyborg and Flash digging up a body where you could really see the characters grow from strangers to teammates to friends. These scenes also peppered in some light humor that kept the movie from becoming too dark without distracting from the tone.
Since Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021) is technically an action movie and it is rated R, I feel like I should touch on the action sequences. Overall, the action was incredibly fun to watch! It was made for the big screen so watching the epic battles for the first time on my TV at home was a bit underwhelming, but the well choreographed, high stakes fights were still visually pleasing. For a rated R movie there was not as much gore as there could have been, which I appreciated and the level of violence was pretty much what I expected from a comic book movie.
The action scenes also do a fantastic job with power escalation. By that I mean the action illustrates the limits of one character’s power clearly in relation to other characters’ powers. This way you are aware of exactly how impressive the characters and their powers are on their own and so when someone or something stronger shows up we have context for how big of a threat we are dealing with. The clean way the story shows us everyone’s respective powers and their limits makes it so the stakes feel more tangible and it's not just unfathomably strong characters beating the shit out of each other with the winner decided by chance.
There are a few reasons the movie didn’t get a full five waves from me. First was that the Amazon’s outfits were very clearly made by horny men based on how much skin they were showing. I, a bisexual, personally love to see superheroes in less then full coverage, but when the Amazon warriors have their entire stomachs and cleavage out of their armor for no reason it exhausts me. What happened to the tasteful and stylish armor from Wonder Woman (2017)? This feels like a step in the wrong direction.
The next concern I have that has kept me from recommending this movie to people is the overall pacing and length. While there were some great uses of the extended run time like the action sequences and team bonding I mention above, there were so many scenes that were way too slow for me to stay engaged. I found myself editing the movie in my head, like did we really need 2 full minutes of Bruce Wayne and his horse climbing a dreary mountain? I don’t think so. This was a narrative where I needed to pay attention lest I miss critical pieces of the story, but the random scenes that dragged on too long had me going to get snacks and checking my phone throughout. If I could rate the movie by halves the first half would get 2.5 Waves because of how it dragged and the second half would get closer to 4.5 Waves since the story really picks up and fun things start to happen.
The final part of this movie that kept it from getting a higher rating was how closely it was tied to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. In fact, the first scene of Zack Snyder's Justice League is the final scene of Batman v Superman. There were many plot critical tie-ins to previous movies that left me feeling confused until I googled my questions during the slow scenes. If you have never seen Batman v Superman or Man of Steel then you will miss a lot of this movie, which I thought was unfair because other DCEU movies came out before the first iteration of Justice League like Wonder Woman and Suicide Squad and while events in those movies are mentioned in passing they are not nearly as important as the Batman and Superman-centric films. If the DCEU is going to pick favorites, the least it can do is pick movies I actually like (Wonder Woman (2017) remains my favorite DCEU movie to date). In general, superhero movies seem to be trending toward sagas and I prefer movies that you can just watch and enjoy without needing to see a bunch of other movies first.
Overall, I did very much enjoy this movie, but based on the run time alone it is not going to be for everyone. Measuring movie success during the pandemic is trickier than looking at box office numbers and labeling it a success or a flop, but it does appear that Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021) is doing well as far as critical reception and viewership. I hope that this success will allow the DCEU to explore all of the fun nooks and crannies of the universe Snyder pulled together. In fact, half of the epilogue of this movie felt like set up for future movies. I hope they come to fruition because there were some pretty compelling teasers at the end that I would love to see played out on the big screen.
As I mentioned before, I’ve never seen the original cut of Justice League, but Snyder’s version left me fulfilled and satisfied with the narrative, so I am happy to have seen this newest cut first. This is a movie for people who love DC, love superhero movies or are just really invested in the hype.

10 Injustice Characters the DC Animated Movie Needs to Get Right
https://ift.tt/3fCncB7
As we wait an announcement pertaining to the existence of NetherRealm Studios’ Injustice 3, we at least know that Warner Bros. is set to adapt the games into a DC animated movie.
Ever since its release in 2013, the Injustice franchise has not only become a staple of NetherRealm’s roster, but the comic spinoffs have made it a beloved part of the DC multiverse. The plot revolves around a reality where the Joker was able to mess with Superman so badly that the Man of Steel gradually became a mass-murdering dictator, with the support of several members of the Justice League. Left without any other option, Batman brought in counterparts of the Justice League from the “mainstream” universe to help him fight a civil war against his former friend. It was a story that merged the Justice Lords two-parter from the Justice League cartoon with Marvel’s original Squadron Supreme comic series.
A popular prequel series was released, mostly written by Tom Taylor, that explained the five years in-between Superman killing the Joker in cold blood and Batman’s last stand. Sometime later, the game’s story was adapted into the comic Injustice: Ground Zero. And the Injustice universe has only continued to grow since then.
As snazzy as NetherRealm’s story modes are, they are going to have to make some changes to the narrative for the animated movie. It’s not like every character is going to stumble into exactly four best-two-out-of-three fights in a row before someone else is the focus. Knowing that there will be alterations, some characters are really going to need some tender love and care.
Superman (Both of Them)
Injustice: Gods Among Us didn’t invent the idea of an evil Superman, but things are a bit over-saturated these days. Face it, “Dark Superman” has been done to death, what with Brightburn, The Boys, Invincible, and everything Zack Snyder intended with his Justice League movies.
It’s important that the animated movie really get into the WHY of what turned Superman evil instead of the Joker just getting a tragic win over him. The Injustice comic nudged him over and over again with multiple betrayals and manipulations before he finally snapped and angrily broke every bone in Green Arrow’s body. Hit all that, or at least enough of it.
More importantly, Injustice is a story of two different Supermen. The mainstream Superman has to ring true. He has to be the beacon of hope and positivity that pop culture has been missing for the past decade.
Ultimately, as long as they don’t do that minigame where Superman blows up cars and the people in them with his eye-lasers, we’re cool.
Batman
In this DC take of Marvel’s Civil War, Batman is by default the better person when compared to Superman. He has a line he won’t cross and that means no murder and no tyranny. That said, he still needs to be portrayed as a flawed hero. He may be competent, but he still behaves like a total douche at times and deserves to take one to the chin every now and then.
Being a paranoid futurist who buries himself in contingency plans means alienating allies, friends, and even family members. There’s a great moment in the Injustice comic where he reveals that he infected Cyborg with a virus within a week of meeting (you know, just in case), which Killer Croc says is outright sinister. It’s this kind of behavior that led to Superman’s fall to darkness, because even if Bruce wasn’t behind any of the horrors, he still chose coldness and paranoia over being there for a friend who was going through some serious shit.
Harley Quinn
A hype trailer for Harley painted her as a major protagonist in the first game but the game’s story mode just didn’t measure up. The comics did a better job and the Ground Zero volume was specifically about telling the game’s story from Harley’s perspective. I’m not saying that she should be joined by her team of BFF henchmen from Ground Zero, but she should definitely be a prominent hero.
Similar to the Mark Waid comic series Irredeemable and Incorruptible (also about an evil take on Superman), Harley’s turn to heroism is the universe’s response to Superman’s actions. She’s done some horrible things and may never make up for her actions under the Joker’s thumb, but she’ll keep fighting to stop Superman’s atrocities.
Wonder Woman
While Batman did a bad job trying to pull Superman from the darkness, Wonder Woman succeeded in pushing him in. It’s noted here and there, but this Wonder Woman was also altered by tragedy. In this timeline, Steve Trevor turned out to be a Nazi traitor. His betrayal left Diana feeling much less optimistic and hopeful than her mainstream self.
Wonder Woman’s villainy isn’t as pronounced as Superman’s, but she’s definitely the friendly face who eggs him on and wants him to stand over all mankind. As Superman uses her to fill the void left from Lois Lane’s death, the power couple become very good at bringing out the worst in each other.
Damian Wayne
The Injustice game did Damian a little dirty, revealing deep into the story that the Nightwing fighting on Superman’s side was not Dick Grayson, but Damian. According to Batman, Damian murdered Dick. The comics dove deeper into that and made it more of a freak accident brought on by Damian being an impulsive and angry child. Still, Bruce and his son were unable to make amends due to their shared lack of warmth.
Later stories, and even Injustice 2, added more depth to Damian. It always made sense that he’d join Superman’s Regime, but there was a soul in there who would eventually see that this wasn’t the right path. In the comic Injustice vs. Masters of the Universe, which was treated as a sequel to Injustice 2’s dark ending, Damian took up the mantle of Batman to oppose Superman and even grew a long-missing sense of humor in the process.
Lex Luthor
The great tragedy of the DC multiverse is that Superman and Lex Luthor just can’t get along. They will always be at odds no matter what Earth they come from. The Injustice universe was the one exception, as Luthor was portrayed as fairly warm and altruistic. Much like Batman, he has contingency plans up the wazoo, but they don’t come off as creepy.
Seeing him there as Superman’s longtime friend who sadly has to stab him in the back brings back that multiversal truth about the duo. Just because this is a world where Superman kills and things get very bleak doesn’t mean it’s the worst world and that it isn’t worth saving. The mainstream Cyborg is reluctant to come to terms with this heroic Luthor, but he ultimately accepts the miracle that this universe created a Luthor worth befriending and even looking up to.
Hal Jordan
Maybe it’s just me, but I was never a fan of how Geoff Johns retconned Hal’s past and gave him deniability for everything he did as Parallax. I liked that a boring hero dude like Hal snapped, did some bad stuff, and then had to accept his failures in an attempt to be better. With Injustice, they gave us that exact Hal.

Injustice: Year Zero Brings the Justice Society to DC Alternate Universe
By Jim Dandy
Overflowing with willpower and being an otherwise competent space cop, Hal is still something of a dunce at times, and he’s susceptible to manipulation in the right situation. He’s already following Superman’s lead, but having Sinestro pop in to indoctrinate him into the Sinestro Corps makes him actually interesting. Let Hal be the worst version of himself here so he can double back on it in the sequel and beg Guy Gardner’s ghost for forgiveness.
Shazam
Injustice may be the B-side to Mortal Kombat, but the game itself is fairly tame on the violence. Joker’s death isn’t actually shown on screen, Luthor’s end is fairly clean, and Grodd taking a trident to the torso is relatively tame.
But what we absolutely, positively have to see in the animated movie is Shazam’s death scene to really give an idea of how far gone Superman is. It’s bloodless from our point of view, but it’s grisly as hell and made worse when you remember that Shazam is a literal child under all the mystical power.
Batgirl
The Barbara Gordon version of Batgirl was one of the first DLC characters added to Injustice, but it’s unfortunate that she’s not in the main story mode — something the animated movie could fix by giving her a more prominent role in the fight against the Regime. Her ending gives her a kickass backstory where she returns to the cowl after her father dies at Superman’s hands. The comics go deeper into this, even making it so that Superman doesn’t directly kill Commissioner Gordon.
In this continuity, she was already wheelchair-bound as Oracle. She had to go under a very dangerous procedure under Luthor’s care in order to walk again. This is one of the storylines that could make for a captivating arc in the movie.
Alfred Pennyworth
Alfred isn’t in either Injustice game. He’s already dead by the start of the first game. But I don’t care. Alfred needs to be in the animated movie because he is the heart and soul of the Injustice comics. While others bow to Superman, follow him, or even try to reason with him, Alfred Pennyworth doesn’t play those games. He will straight-up verbally clown Superman for his actions without flinching. He is not afraid of the Kryptonian, no matter how red his glowing eyes get.
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
This comes to a head in the comics when Alfred takes a pill that gives him Kryptonian strength and he kicks the absolute shit out of Superman for ruining his family. I know I’m asking for a lot, but I simply need to see Alfred stomp a mudhole in Superman so hard that his own shoe explodes from the impact.

Superman #83 (November 1993)
Funeral for a Friend: uh, that one Green Lantern supporting character who died when Coast City got blown up (Joe? Gary?). In this issue DC’s superheroes pay tribute to the tragedy of Coast City while also deciding what the hell to do with the giant engine that’s now in its place. Weird early ‘90s Hawkman! Dr. Fate with boobs! Already-slightly-psychotic Hal Jordan! EVERYONE IS HERE.
(Nice one, Guy.)
Meanwhile, Lex Luthor Jr. is also sneaking around Engine City, supposedly to prevent it from falling into the ocean and killing some of Aquaman’s friends, but in reality he just wants to look into the Cyborg Superman’s computer to see if he can find a recipe for making kryptonite. As the heroes argue about what to do with Engine City (Hal says drop it into the water, screw the fish), some leftover Warworld aliens start attacking them, like the holdout Japanese soldiers who never found out WWII was over.
The attack precipitates the city’s fall into the water and the heroes have to think fast to prevent a fish holocaust. Their solution is for all the Green Lantern-related characters (Hal Jordan, Guy Gardner, Alan Scott, Alan’s daughter Jade) to “detoxify” the debris with their powers before it falls into the ocean. And it works! These guys should totally open a carpet cleaning business.
As for Lex Jr., he does find the recipe for kryptonite inside the crumbling city, but just as he’s about to write it down (he wasn’t carrying any floppy disks, apparently), Supergirl yanks him out of there to prevent him from burning alive. What an unsupportive girlfriend. Anyway, Superman then takes some of the debris and builds a giant memorial for Coast City’s 6,999,999 anonymous lost souls, and Gary. Sweet Gary. You will be missed.
Creator-Watch:
If the art looks different that’s because this is the first issue inked by Joe Rubinstein, ending Brett Breeding’s classic two and a half year run as Dan Jurgens’ main inker (so classic that it feels a lot longer than that). Breeding will be back for Superman/Doomsday: Hunter/Prey and other stuff, though. As for Rubinstein, Don says: “At the time, I had trouble with the transition, being soused to Brett Breeding’s finishes over Jurgens’ pencils, but looking at it now, the art looks great. It doesn’t look as smooth or blocky as Breeding’s finishes, but Rubinstein’s hatchier style serves Jurgens pretty well, even if it takes some getting used to.”
Plotline-Watch:
At the start of the issue, Superman goes to pick up Batman to take him to Coast City, only to find him wearing a different costume, acting differently, and sounding like a different guy. That’s because that’s not really Bruce Wayne in the suit anymore, but the replacement he got after Bane broke his back. That’s right: freakin’ Psi-Phon and Dreadnaught.
Superman gives a speech about how superheroes must work together to prevent another tragedy like Coast City from happening, but when Guy asks him if that means he’s going back to the Justice League, he’s like “uh, not yet.” Wisely, he’s gonna wait for Grant Morrison to get there first.
Hal Jordan’s characterization in this issue is interesting. In Green Lantern #47 (which came out the same month), he’s bummed about Coast City but still hopeful and serene, while here he’s already going Parallax on us. Wonder if Dan Jurgens knew more about what DC was planning for Hal than the other comic’s writer.
There’s a cute scene where Superman is flying by Kansas on his way to Coast City and quickly drops some flowers for Ma Kent. (That, or Flash picked this moment to hit on a random older woman.)
Former TV exec/crime boss Morgan Edge has released an autobiography where he trashes the Daily Planet’s Cat Grant for using her sexiness (and, you know, sex) to get dirt on him and send him to jail. He also accuses Cat of being a crappy mother to her son Adam. He kind of has a point there, because what kind of mom would let her kid play with an Atari in the early ‘90s?! The SNES and the Genesis were already out!
Believe it or not, Morgan Edge’s pervy dad in that screenshot above isn’t the creepiest thing in that scene. Don: “Very spooky how the guy dangling outside of Cat’s apartment goes without mention. An ominous foreshadow of one of the very few missteps of Jurgens’ run.”
But the most ominous part of the issue is at the end, when Clark Kent accepts Jimmy Olsen’s offer to become roomies, since Clark lost his apartment on account of being dead and all. Don wants you to know that “Jimmy is still in that towel by the way” in the scene below. I hope.
Patreon-Watch:
Shout out to our patrons Aaron, Murray Qualie, Chris “Ace” Hendrix, britneyspearsatemyshorts, Patrick D. Ryall, and a warm welcome to Samuel Doran! Last month our patrons got to read an article about Superman’s bizarre first Elseworlds appearance ever, the Kamandi: At Earth’s End miniseries, and got a veeeeeery early look at this post you’re reading right now (since Don finished his part way before I did mine). Right now I’m preparing this month’s Patreon-only article, which involves Superman wearing pointy ears and Luthor wearing make up. Find out more at https://www.patreon.com/superman86to99
Oh, and in case you missed it, we’ve been posting Don’s new commentary for older issues on the Patreon as free posts (click above and scroll down to see them). EVEN MORE from Don after the jump!
Art-Watch (by @donsparrow):
Another classic issue, and such a nice wrap-up to the "Death and Return" storyline (as well as being a much-needed check-In on the DC Universe at large). We start with the cover, and it’s a very good one, letting the reader know right away that it’s a big team-up issue. (It also is a real showcase for 90s costume design, and how weird the JLA lineup was at this point).
The opening splash is a neat image of a rarely seen pairing, Superman and Commissioner Gordon. Jurgens draws James Gordon a little heavier and more Pa-Kent like than I’m used to seeing him, but it’s still neat to see him interacting with Superman. A page later, we get another rare pairing—the returned Superman with the imposter Batman, Jean-Paul Valley. The tension in the interaction between “AzBats” and Superman comes across well in their exchange, as does Superman’s doubts about who he was really speaking to.
It’s a dreamy looking Superman crossing the country from Metropolis to Coast City, and I daresay that they’re trying to channel Dean Cain a little as he approaches Kansas.
The best panel of the issue though is the two page spread of all the heroes gathering at the wreckage of Coast City, and there’s so much to love here. The body language, and facial expressions speak volumes about each of the characters: Superman looking swashbuckling and upbeat, Green Lantern brooding like a man barely holding on, Green Arrow all attitude and shadow. Just a great spread.
Another cool image is Aquaman showing up late, and emerging very royally in protection of his ocean (undercut masterfully by a legitimately funny couple of lines from Guy Gardner). Page 14’s Hal Jordan is a great drawing, and this whole storyline seems like a table setter for the "Emerald Twilight" story coming up.
The sequence of a firelit Luthor at the computer is a good look at his madness, but it does beg the question of just how little Supergirl seems to take in. He was JUST talking aloud about Kryptonite, and she emerges seeming not to hear. The image of Supergirl flying Lex away as he struggles against her psychic grab is a good one, even if her uniform is depicted as a little clingier than I imagine it to really be.
Superman floating above his obelisk with his arm in front of his face like Dracula is a cool look, even if it is a little dramatic.
Lastly, the image of Clark turning up the stereo is a good one, even if his hair length is wildly shorter here than in Coast City (and I usually dislike it when they mention real world bands, as it comes off trying too hard to be hip).
STRAY OBSERVATIONS:
I have to love how meta it is to have Superman outright saying that Batman is dressing more “threatening” these days, on page 2. I guess he couldn’t come right out and say “you have an extreme new look, and it’s totally badass! Batman the next generation!”
Last we saw of Supergirl she was storming out of the party on Lex’s Zeppelin after Lex II was getting all horned up at the sight of Lois Lane, but it appears here they’ve mostly patched things up as they fly to Coast City.
More meta-stuff: Jimmy clunkily complimenting Lois on her new hair by saying she “oughta be on TV or something!”. This whole exchange is very expository, really, “Clark must be pretty mad… though he’s busy worrying about where he’s going to bunk…” Anything else to get in there, Jimmy?
The harshness some of the heroes have for Lex Junior seems a little out of place, especially since he’s still known to most of the heroes as an ally from "Panic in the Sky", and the "Doomsday" storyline. Superman’s comment was borderline, but where is all this anger Flash is showing coming from?
Being as familiar as we are with these writers, there are certain phrases or ideas that a certain writer will go to way, way too often. Byrne had a number of stories where Superman would “ionize” something with his heat vision, and it occurred to me that maybe he just liked that word. I would submit that Dan Jurgens likes the word “atomize”. It was used by the Cyborg Superman when talking about Doomsday, and is used a bunch just in this issue.
I find it hilarious that Hawkman appears so prominently in this issue, but doesn’t get any lines. This issue is an interesting time capsule—I had almost forgotten about the de-aged Starheart powered Alan Scott era.
Speaking of lines, they don’t give Captain Marvel much to do in this issue, but I always like seeing him, even if his only contribution is the odd “Holy Moley!”
Colouring error on page 12, where Hal’s ring has a red centre (maybe the colourist had Alan Scott’s red and green look on the brain?)
A raging Hal standing by Green Arrow is a sad foreshadowing of their confrontation to come in Zero Hour.

Its nice to have a friend Spencer Reid x reader
So this is a Spencer Reid song fic based on its nice to have a friend by Taylor swift. and I saw someone else to a songfic based on this song for another character and i felt inspired. there’s mention of bullying and divorce but other than that just a fluffy fic.
Mostly gender neutral reader x Spencer but at one point the reader wears a dress
School bell rings, walk me home
Sidewalk chalk covered in snow
Lost my gloves, you give me one
"Wanna hang out?"
School was finally over as the bell rang signaling the end of the day my teacher said something but I didn't hear her. No, I'm too excited to get home. It's the first day of winter break and I couldn't be more excited. I didn't really see the point of kindergarten and most of the kids are mean.
Anyways my mommy lets me walk home by myself alot of the bigger kids do and it's only a 10 minute walk to my house. I finally stop running just outside of the school yard where a lot of the kids color and draw on the sidewalk too icy to do it now which reminds me i'm not supposed to run because I could get hurt.
As I look up to continue my walk home I see a kinda frail looking boy with crooked teeth and glasses too big for his face, ah Spencer he's not in my class with me but I know him cause a lot of the kids tease him and hide his stuff. I don't really know why but my parents say if you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything at all. Besides, I don't know why they do it all he really does is sit by himself and read.
He doesn't have any gloves on or a hat and it's snowing and I'm cold with my gloves and coat so I know he is too, maybe he doesn't have any. It's not really common to snow in Las Vegas but it's probably because the kids hid them from him. I run up to catch up with him. It's not that hard, he's not exactly moving fast, he doesn't seem really excited to get home, maybe he doesn't have anything to do.
“Here take one of mine” I hold out one of my gloves to him so at least only one of his hands will be cold. He looks at me like he's expecting me to tease him or snatch the glove away at the last second but I guess he deems me trust worthy enough and takes it putting it on his furthest hand.
“t-thanks i’m s-spencer”
“I know i’m y/n you lost your gloves right?” I know the kids took them but I don't want him to feel any worse about it.
“Yeah I did thanks” he still looks really cold so I grab his hand closest to me and try to interlock our fingers so both his hands will be warm. He kinda flinches at first but then seems to accept that I'm not gonna hurt him.
“So you won't be cold Spencer”
We walk for maybe a minute in silence before I get another idea
“Wanna hang out?”
Video games, you pass me a note
Sleeping in tents
It's nice to have a friend
(Ooh)
It's nice to have a friend
(Ooh)
I'm now i'm second grade and Spencer is in third and ever since that day we've been best friends and do practically everything together and this is the first year without him in my grade and I miss him a lot but we still hang out everyday after school.
“C’mon Spencer it won't be bad I promise my parents are right inside and if you want to go you can but could you please try it”.
I'm referring to spending the night in a tent in my backyard.Sleepovers were a common thing for Spencer and I especially with his dad having left I think that's why he likes being over so much it lets him forget for a little while.Earlier this week I learned Spencer had never been camping due to his thing with germs but after a lot of begging and secret planning on my part he agreed “okay y/n but if I don't like it we can go in?”
I nod happily and lead him to the backyard where everyday after school I've been cleaning it and setting up a campsite in the cleanest way possible. “Did you know that 77 million american households contain a member that camps and 81% of households in America say they want to camp more?”
“No, I didn't Spence, do you have any more statistics about camping for me?’ this is one thing I love about him he can tell you something about any subject you ask him it's because of his Eidetic memory. He found out he had last year and its super cool he can remember and fact I wish I had his memory some times.
I open the tent to reveal an air mattress with a bunch of blankets and some comic books my mommy bought earlier. It's not the big books like he likes to read but it's Marvel comics that I introduced him to a few months ago and we've been reading them together ever since.
“w-wow y/n this is so cool, did you know the hulk was supposed to be grey in the original comics but was changed to green after a mess up with printer ink?”
“No but i'd love to hear more comic facts”
He deserves someone to listen to him after everything with his parents and all the kids at school bullying him. I don't want him to ever feel alone.
Light pink sky up on the roof
Sun sinks down, no curfew
Twenty questions, we tell the truth
You've been stressed out lately? Yeah, me too
Something gave you the nerve
To touch my hand
It's amazing how two people who are in such different places in their lives can still love each other so much while Spencer is the only 16 year old I know with 2 phds working on another i'm still in highschool. Not from lack of hard work though i’m graduating this year 2 years early so I can go to cal tech to be with Spencer. If i'm being perfectly honest if not for Spencer I wouldn't be graduating early but I miss him too much to stay any longer. I'm sick of highschool boyfriends and football games and dealing with the same kids who bullied Spencer for being a nerd acting like we’re best friends just because I made nice with them.
Right now were on the roof of my house after a lot of convincing on my part to get him out here
“Why are we out here y/n do you know how many roof related accidents happen a year?”
“No but I'm sure you do dr.” I think my favorite pastime of recent is teasing Spencer.
He's saying something to me as I nod along but I'm not paying attention to what he's saying. No, I'm too busy staring at him.
He's really grown into his features he still has a boyish look about him but now his jawline is very defined and his brown hair goes just past his hair curling at the ends after a long day of hanging out the gel has worn out making his hair as messy as ever and he’s traded his glasses for contacts but i still think he looks for lack of better word beautiful either way. I know I love him, I've loved him since the first day I met him and over the years at one point I guess the feelings went from platonic to romantic but I don’t tell him. I don't have to I know i'll spend the rest of my life with Spencer Reid
“y/n y/n hello”
“Hmm, what were you saying Spence?”
“I-i’m sorry am i boring you y/n?” the worst part is he's not mad about it he looks upset like he feels bad for boring me.
“No never, i'm sorry I was just thinking”
“About what?”
“You” why did I say that but it's fine it has to be Spencer won't care but I don't want to see his reaction to my words instead focusing on the pink orange sky
“You know I love you right that i'll always love you”
I feel him grasp my hand interlocking our fingers and I let out a quiet gasp-but he heard it. We've only held hands twice our whole lives the first day I met him and after the goal post incident so this is well, completely out of character for him and our friendship.
“I love you too y/n”
Church bells ring, carry me home
Rice on the ground looks like snow
Call my bluff, call you "babe"
Have my back, yeah, everyday
Feels like home, stay in bed
The whole weekend
They call us stupid-young and dumb-that well be divorced in 10 years but we love each other and known each other our whole lives hes just been accepted into the BAU at 20 he has to move to Quantico. I'm gonna go with him I can get a job i've finished my degree there's nothing keeping me here.
“Let's get married”
“What?” it's rare that I make him speechless but this seems to do the trick.
“Why don't I love you and you love me. We've been dating for how many years now 4? I want to spend the rest of my life with you i've known that I wanted you in my life since that first day on the sidewalk I want to grow old with you and have kids and grand kids so why wait let's get married” I look up at him silently pleading with him to just agree with me.
“y/n 45% of marriages end in divorce and 20% of couples under 24 get divorced in the first year of marriage”. He’s cautious I don't blame him not after what happened with his mom and dad.
“Well this is one time i'm going to ask you not to trust the statistics. I may not know all the facts about marriage and life but i know us and i'd like to think that's enough. I don't want anything big just us we can go down to the courthouse and make it official”
He moves over to the couch where i'm sitting and grabs my hand “yes”
It wasn't anything big, him in the only suit he owns and me in a dime store wedding dress. The rings we have are cheap and the diamond in my hand may have been small but it means everything to me.
We didn't even tell our parents why his mom is institutionalized, his dad left and my parents don't approve of me leaving for Quantico instead its Spencer and I with 5 of our college friends. We both walk out of the courthouse as they throw rice at us-unnecessary but sweet of them-and get into his car driving off to go home. We aren't having a honeymoon unless you count moving to Quantico.
He picks me up and carries me through the threshold of the apartment as he sets me down I ask “can we do our vows I know we both agreed not to prepare anything don't worry I didn’t I just want to tell you some things and you don't even have to say anything back I just need to say it. Spencer I just want you to know how incredibly proud I am of you and all you’ve acomplised and overcome even the first time I saw you I could tell we were gonna be friends.I am just so thankful to have you here right now and for sticking with me through all of the chess matches and late night adventure and stupid boyfriends and what I guess i’m trying to say is thank you for always being you I love you.”
I look at him with tears in my eyes and with tears in his eyes too and he clears his throat “ y/n I will never be able to express how you have helped me over the years from school yard bullies to cal tech and my mom.And I know i'm not the best with words i'm better with analysis and fact but there is no fact or statistic that will let me describe how i'm love with you I am” I put one hand on the side of his face and pull him in for a kiss.
It's nice to have a friend
(Ooh)
It's nice to have a friend

Thor 4
hi no one knows me here but imma bout to give a rant no one wants! are you ready? here we gooooo!!
Okay! first of all lets talk about thor Ragnarok. When I first saw it I loved it! I was so happy to see my top marvel characters on screen! I really waited forever for new thor content and just was generally happy I was getting some! I thought the movie was different for thor a nice little change of pace, but! i understand that it is problematic and as a fan of the original two thor movies i can see how the third one does not live up to the others, which is why I was scared when I heard Taika Waititi was going to direct it again. Especially since he did not do his research previously which I think is sad and sloppy. But then.... oh but then!!! I saw this!!
and i was like
but let me tell you why!! so, before I even knew there was going to be a thor four before we all knew marvel was going to break its three movie rule... i was writing my own thor four script. Obviously it was fan fiction in script format and was for me because like i said i just want more thor content and never in my wildest dreams would I guess marvel would break their three movie rule for my boy thor! A round of applause please!
However, as mentioned before I was scared because the man who kind of made a parody of the thor characters was making the fourth one. I have nothing against Taika Waititi personally, but I’m just sad he didn’t really put much effort into a marvel series I love. Now, back to the fact I was writing my own thor... actually backtrack... THOR 2: THE DARK WORLD! Around that time the most wonderful movie came out.... Frozen...
we all just want to... let it go... puns aside since those two movies were out on dvd around the same time and I watched them both around the same time and I coined a little phrase... Love is an open Thor... Love is an open Thor... Thor Love and Thunder.... Love is an open Thor... Thor Love and Thunder... COINCIDENCE??? (seriously look at some of my tags)
Okay back to the fact I wanted my own damn thor movie! I am writing this as of July 20, 2019 i will reblog this with a movie review but as of right now here is what I was planning. So lets start with the basic plot!! I was thinking of using bits of the Celestials plot and the fact that Thor eventually have to pass his hammer down to Jane Foster. So, Thor and Loki (this was before end game when I was hoping and praying for Loki’s safe return) hang out on earth after all the end game and infinity war chaos. Thor is not really feeling earth’s home vibes but hears of an asgardian who has really adapted to earth life (again this was thought of before end game). Him and Loki go to find that person and its Sigyn who has been on earth for the past 10-20 years on a mission for Frigga! She had no clue Asgard was blown up and that Ragnarok happened. But thats not all! She is housing the infamous Amora and Lorelei who were banished by Loki when he was Odin because they sniffed him out. Loki tells Thor to not trust them, but Thor missing Jane and starting to become under little miss Enchantress’s spell, doesn’t listen. The three lovely ladies are reintroduced into Asgardian society on earth and just be themselves. Over hearing about Skurge’s death and the fact there is hire beings that Sigyn was trying find twelve perfect humans to sacrifice to, Amora and Lorelei decide to finish the job/ corrupt the sacrifices and exchange earth for the return of Asgard. Not realizing they sort of can’t do that, Thor, Valkyrie, Loki, and Sigyn go out and try to stop the girls. There’s badass mind battle scenes between Amora and Scarlet Witch, Spiderman appearance just being his cute self, Sigyn admitting she’s bi as hell being in love with Lady Loki, Loki, and a little crush on Valkyrie, cool magic scenes between Loki and Sigyn, Thor and Loki beginning to heal, Amora tricking Valkyrie into an amulet(a little of that plot line... she would be out by the main battle) and Valkyrie healing realizing she deserves better, and most importantly.... Jane Foster. Yes I wanted Jane to be apart of this because I was upset she wasn’t in Thor Ragnarok. You wouldn’t make a spiderman movie without MJ, you wouldn’t make a Iron Man Movie without Peper.... where was Jane?
Anyway Jane would help with holding off the Celestials in a big battle as long as she could and of course help throughout the movie. Once its realized they had to resurrect the Destroyer armor (since Thor killed it in the first movie) and that would be done by all of the remaining Asgardians life force. Thor gives his powers to Jane to make sure everything goes according to plan as everyone (including Amora and Lorelei, Sigyn will bribe them) sacrifices themselves. After the Celestials are put off (for now) Jane as Thor goes to all the other gods and asks for life forces and gets them, uses Sigyn’s spell to revive everyone. Amora gets Skurge back but has to go to prison, Loki frees Sigyn of her loyalty to Asgard (i was gonna make her loyalty goddess angle as more as a curse) and she could either be a supportive sometimes lover of loki or just a lover to Valkyrie(someone to treat my girl right!) and Jane becomes the new Thor!
My movie does several things! Establish Celestials a new really big threat (avengers 4, 5 whatever), brings some peace and understanding between Thor and Loki, gives Loki someone who will always root for him. make Marvel gay, gives Jane the hammer, and if they wanted to do more Thors with Jane clean up whatever mess Sigyn made because she may or may not have accidentally brought back old enemies! Good job Sigyn!
Now are my ideas perfect?? No! Is it well thought out? No it needs more work... would I even dream marvel would pull something like this? Well I did which inspired me to do further Thor research and come up with a decent plot (I hope its a decent plot its different comic book ideas in like one).
Now what the actual movie has confirmed...
JANE IS BACK BABY AND SHE’S GETTING THOSE POWERS!!! HELL YEAH!!
also during comic con they have confirmed eternals and who created the damn eternals.... thats right the Celestials... these are celestial beings you don’t want to mess with and there’s a lot of them like different type wise! So many marvel charcters deal with the Celestials... are they the new bad boys of marvel? We will see!!
Anyway, I know that since end game things to my plot don’t fit the canon such as Loki being alive but not at the same time and Thor joining the Guardians of the Galaxy. There was rumors that Thor would join but I didn’t see that in the marvel line up unless I didn’t look close enough!
Besides that, Thor 4 is a mystery! Let’s see what happens! Let’s see if my plot follows closely, or the movie be 100x better than my fan fiction!! I really hope the movie is 100x better! If not, catch me posting on AO3! Also like I’m pretty sure the government is watching my phone because I remember telling the jane thing to a friend through text... either that or the universe is listening and giving me Jane as Thor and a Loki series!! and if the universe is still listening I would like my college fund to be paid off... please? Thank you for reading rant over!!

have you ever noticed that ( patricia walker ) from the ( marvel universe ) looks a lot like ( rachael taylor )? but ( she ) also goes by ( hellcat ). having the abilities of ( enhanced agility and titanian enhancements ) sure makes them a force to be reckoned with. they’re known to be ( ambitious, ) but also ( frenetic, ) and they’re ( thirty-three ) years old.
{ trigger warnings : mental illness, implication of assisted suicide, child abuse, verbal abuse, sexual abuse, addiction, drugs, anorexia, bulimia —> but most those are in the section called patricia’s backstory, the rest is clean to read if you skip that part }
hey everyone, i’m ty!! i’m trash and neglected my sweet angel baby by forgetting to post her intro, so here it is now!
INTRODUCTORY INFORMATION ABOUT PATRICIA //
ok i don’t even want to talk about how much s2 of jessica jones did my girl dirty. so for the most part (excluding backstory, which i’ll get to in a second) patricias life story is more heavily based on the comics canon, just more of a modernized character like in jessica jones.
basically this means: shes much less likely to parade around spouting phrases like good golly. and more likely to answer to trish than patsy.
it also means ill be keeping the comic version of how she got her powers & what those powers are ( more on that below )
PATRICIAS CHILDHOOD BACKSTORY // ( pls skip over this if it’s likely to trigger you <3 )
her mom was super obsessed with her growing up and wrote a comic about her call it’s patsy
when she was about 5-6 her mom forced her into the limelight, creating a tv show based off of the comic series
patsy was a childhood star and her mom was her agent. she was always forced to eat what her mom wanted her to eat and look how she wanted to look. her mom forced her to become anorexic and bulimic, something she would eventually recover from, but not until her mid-to-late twenties.
patricia though grew tired with her mom’s obsession and fixation on her, so she tried to rebel against the patsy brand. this resulted in their relationship becoming even more strained, dorothy verbally and physically abusing her daughter. the physical abuse would stop around the time when they fostered jessica jones, but the verbal abuse continues still to this day.
she became a teenage pop sensation, starring in multiple music videos, as well as hollywood films, as patsy. her whole life reflected around being someone else, wearing different coloured wigs, dressing in her mother’s image. she never developed an identity of her own — perhaps that’s part of the reason why she also became so fixated on super heroes, due to most of their alter egos.
regardless, trish had an equally rough time in her adolescent and early-to-mid 20’s. her mother forced her, at the ripe age of 15, to start giving head to (and often engaging in intercourse with) male directors so she would get better parts in films. she fell into the hollywood party scene, and became very addicted to drugs. she could often be found in bathroom stalls completely inebriated, throwing herself at any man she could, just so she could feel something. being in such a vulnerable state made her very susceptible to being taken advantage of, particularly sexually, and this influenced her need to later make sure “no one touches her again unless she wants them to”.
BECOMING HELLCAT // ( tw implication of assisted suicide )
trish was eventually married to a man named robert baxter, a childhood friend of hers who was training in the airforce. trish lived on and off the base for a couple of years, when her husband was moved to a secret facility where Beast was working, she learnt more about superheroes and started working with the avengers. it’s at this time that she found the suit greer nelson aka tigra had used under the alias The Cat and sported it as hellcat.
her marriage then had a falling out, so when the titanian priestess known as moondragon offered to take her back to Titan for a period of training, trish was quick to accept. there she had her potential enhanced by titanian technology and was trained in several forms of martial arts (though, keeping in line with the Jessica Jones canon, krav maga is her favourite).
she came back to earth and started working with the defenders (probably so she could work with jessica, just saying). she met daimon at this time, fell in love with them, they got married and moved to san fransisco and worked as occult investigators, working especially with the avengers west coast branch
when daimons dark soul started getting corrupted again, trish had a mental breakdown. she was depressed to the point of near-vegetation, until a mercy killing entity called the Deathurge came to her. trish begged the entity to kill her, and therefore removed her soul from her body, killing her.
HELLCAT’S RETURN//
she ended up in mephisto’s realm fighting in the arena of tainted soul from which she would eventually be freed when daimon tricked the avengers into resurrecting trish
she came back, wrote an autobiography, and started a book tour.
after teaming up with mephistop, hela, and pluto, trish stopped dormammu from taking over all the dimensions of hell. she then went back to her life as hellcat.
the rest of her life up until this point has been a constant string of working as a PI (particularly for occult related things), being kidnapped to some dimension of hell by daimon or some other high ranking demon ruler, working with the defenders, avengers, working as an undercover agent, going rogue, working as a partner of jennifer walters, or taking a break to write more books and go on more tours.
all in all, trish has done it all, and will continue to do it all. she’s determined and motivated, resilient, and loves to keep busy. really the only thing she’s missing in her life to truly make her fulfilled (aside from a partner who won’t kidnap and drag her for hell for all eternity,,,, whoops) is a family of her own.
seriously, bring me trish children. that is all <3
A BRIEF SYNOPSIS OF HER POWERS//
enhanced strength, speed, endurance, agility, and reflexes
sensitivity to psychic phenomenon: including seeing things on an infrared spectrum, detecting mystical energy even from a distance, and seeing through magical glamours and illusions ( particularly ones caused by demons )
in near death situations the true extent of her psionic powers will activate and she can move objects with her mind and release telekinetic, concussive blasts. however, excessive use of her psionic powers lead her to chronic migraines so she opts not to use them unless necessary.
she can magically summon her hellcat costume on command & swap it for whatever item of clothing shes wearing. basically an anime girl
being tortured in mephistos realm gave her magical resistance to the point of near-immunity. she can break free from magic spells and even deflect magical attacks off her aura
MISCELLANEOUS//
trish is a raging bisexual. that is all
also she has a bruise k!nk
her hair was bleached blonde by her mother at a young age and she was forced to wear ginger and strawberry blonde wigs throughout her life. the redhead patsy from the comics in my opinion is a wig she wears that’s part of her hellcat suit. otherwise she keeps her hair blonde, because it’s part of the only identity she has.
she loves fashion and makeup and overall girly things but will also throw down with the nastiest of them do not get on her bad side
one time she summoned an army of demon rabbits to magically build a bridge for her to cross
can u say badass

“All we can do is our best. And sometimes the best that we can do is to start over.”
Movie studios who make make superhero movies have two goals: honor the source material, and make it good.
DC had succeeded previously in this. Tim Burton’s Batman films, and at least the first two Christopher Reeve Superman movies did these things well. They’re not perfect movies to be sure, but they saluted their source material happily, and were great popcorn movies.
And then...somewhere along the way...I don’t know. Something happened. Something got lost. The Batman movies stopped working, and then got super dark and gritty, and Superman Returns was...rough. It was like someone’s first draft that no one had bothered to clean up. Marvel did some low-budget 90′s movies (Captain America and a few others I think), which were just pure camp.
The X-Men movies that came out were more exposition than anything else. They spent so much time explaining what they were that it was more like a dull history lesson than the melodramatic action movie X-Men fans craved. X-Men 3 came out like nails on a chalkboard. The Early Spider-Man movies are...good. But not memorable.
And then something strange happened.
Marvel made...an Iron Man movie. Which was weird, because of all the characters to pick...Tony Stark seemed...unlikely.
But there it was. And it wasn’t just a good movie.
It was a great movie. Funny, and exciting and oddly, full of heart.
And thus was born the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Which is crazy when you think about it. There are over twenty movies in the same continuity, which have introduced on-screen versions of both iconic and really obscure Marvel characters, and they’re all interconnected. They all take place within the same universe.
And yes, some movies aren’t as good as other (I could go on forever about Avengers: Age of Ultron, and I’m not going to lie, Ant-Man and Doctor Strange were well-made but not terribly thrilling for me), but they are all important in their own way. They all make up this vast movie crossover world.
And it’s amazing.
Think about how many people it’s taken to make it as good as it is. Think about how much money has been invested in making movies that are entertaining, honor the source material, and are cohesive with each other (and yes there are continuity hiccups. Who do you think Kevin Feige is, the Watcher?).
Don’t get me wrong. the MCU movies will not wind up on the Criterion Collection. They’re not high art. But they are fun, and full of heart. And for general movie-going audiences, sometimes that’s all you need.
For comics fans, it is bananas to see our favorite characters kick butt on the big screen. When the first Avengers movie came out, I nearly cried at seeing Captain America and Iron Man stand next to each other for the first time.
“Captain.”
“Mr. Stark.”
And yes, comics fans are finicky and bitchy and some of them don’t like women apparently (ugh. fuck’s sake), but we will go to see every single one of these damn movies. And now everybody gets to see what we see in these characters.
How shitty Tony Stark can be. How much of a cinnamon roll Peter Parker is. How much of a pain in the ass Steve Rogers is always all the time. How much of an absolute stone cold bad-ass Carol Danvers is. Now everyone knows just how dumb Peter Quill can be like...most of the time.
And it’s a joy.
But the MCU as we know it is coming to an end. There will be more movies and TV shows, of course, but I don’t think we’ll ever see a lot of these characters in the same place again. Or we may never see some of them again at all. I guess we’ll find out.
I’ll be seeing Endgame tonight after work. I won’t be posting spoilers for a few weeks, but I’m sure I’ll be writing furiously about it. I’m missing the Supernatural season finale for this, so that tells you just how serious business I am about the MCU (don’t worry. I’ll get up ass-early tomorrow morning and watch the finale on my phone. And I’m sure I’ll cry some more).
We’re in the Endgame now. I’ll see everybody on the other side.

Marvel Movie Nights: The Wolverine
This is another one of those films that I had never seen before, and was looking forward to seeing it because I hadn’t seen it before. And.... I’ll be honest I’m not entirely sure what I feel.
It’s not a bad film. I found it much more entertaining than The Amazing Spider-Man. There are elements of this film that really, really work. And... yet, there are some elements of this film that downright suck. But, I mean, if you’re a fan of Wolverine, I think this film does alright -- and works better as a film than the original Wolverine stand-alone did.
The plot is rather thin and somewhat standard, as Wolverine needs to protect a Japanese Heiress from the evil villainy afoot. Ive read the comics this was based on, and while it’s not the same (the four-issue comic book mini would take at least a season’s worth of TV to untangle so I see why they didn’t try) I do like a lot of the elements they tried to incorporate. The Japanese location was kind of a breath of fresh air. And while this film could have easily slipped into some awkward stereotypical storytelling, they do a pretty good job of letting Wolverine just be involved in the Japanese culture instead of trying to save it.
I think the film does pretty well with its characters. Hugh Jackman, of course, could play this part in his sleep, and despite the fact that Wolverine man or animal feels tired at this point (it does in the comics, too, tbh) Jackman does pretty well making it a role that goes beyond that. Meanwhile, we’re rather women heavy, which is a nice change! Even the Avengers can’t claim that, yet. Both Yukio (Wolverine’s psychic kick-ass bff) and Mariko (his love interest) (both great comic book characters) are really good in this film! I wish the story had been better, because I could watch a whole other film with these guys and Wolverine.
Meanwhile, the big bad is a woman as well -- Viper. Which, god, I hate Viper in the comics, and ngl, not a huge fan of her here. She’s SO arch that it feels out of place in a very grounded film. As an aside - in the comics she’s also known as Madame Hydra - but they couldn’t use that due to the fact that Marvel owned Hydra at this point. I’m guessing they couldn’t use the The Hand either due to the same reason.
And then there’s Jean Grey... uuuugggggggg. Out of all the things that come out of this film, this is what I have the most thoughts on, but I’ll spare you a majority of my comics book background diatribe. I understand her purpose here, her meaning to Wolverine post-The Last Stand, and the fact that Logan/Jean is much more popular with the movie universe. But it makes me want to put my head through the wall. I’ve decided it’s the Phoenix Force haunting him and not Jean herself. :P
Oh, and something that did amuse me - there’s a character named Harada who ran around using a bow and arrow. Between him and Yukio, and the way they styled their fighting in the film, they totally have the feel of a Japanese Hawkeye and Black Widow -- which isn’t a slam on them at all -- their action sequences were really well done!
The thing that left the worst taste in my mouth, however, was the ending twenty minutes or so, where -- kind of like Wonder Woman -- devolved into a CGI mess with one of the stupidest twists in these films. The final reveal of who the Silver Samurai just was... so dumb that it felt like it undid a lot of the good character work the film had been trying to do. It was just so convoluted that I’m sorry such a decent film was ruined by the stupidity of the ending. Ug.
Anyway - with the exception of the terrible ending CGI, the film actually looks really nice. It’s clean and interesting in a pleasing way. The cinematography is rather well done, and you can tell the production level was really high -- so I do give it points for that.
Also -- there’s a little post-credit scene with Xavier and Magneto. It’s only purpose is to set up X-Men Days of Future Past, but it’s nice to see Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen again. While I get people love these stand alone stories -- I do miss when superheroes aren’t working together. :P
Final Thoughts: So, yeah, it’s a mixed bag. It’s a pretty film and a competent one. But it’s a little boring and the ending is terrible. But if you’re a Wolverine fan -- especially a movie Wolverine fan -- I think you’ll have a good time.
Next Up: Time to determine just how bad Thor the Dark Work is in comparison to everything else I’ve watched up to this point.

carlycrays replied to your photo “marvel writers and editors trying to decide what to do with loki in an...”
Oh, sweet summer child, you clearly don't know how this works. Loki literally can't stay dead. That's a canon rule. Also, while Marvel hasn't had the best track record with the transgender community, when have they made transphobic jokes at Loki's expense?
nothing has ever made me jump out of bed and race to my computer faster than seeing this message. what is it this weekend that makes people feel like they need to answer my joke posts with a novel telling me how dumb i am?
first of all, allow me to allay your fears. at this point i have read over 400 issues of the original 1966 thor series, and i am still working my way through the rest. ive also read several of the modern retellings of the old comics, journey into mystery (2011) with kid loki and all the tie-ins, loki: agent of asgard, both of the angela series, vote loki, jane fosters entire run as the mighty thor, loki: sorcerer supreme, infinity wars (2018), the current thor series, and now war of the realms. ive also read a little thing called the mythology, as well as a few other modern adaptations. so, to recap, thats easily around 500 issues of asgardian comics, as well as the originating material, and assorted other sources. i know what the fuck im talking about, and i am not your sweet summer child, you condescending ass.
beside that, i am a real human being deserving of basic respect, and if this were actually a case of me not knowing something, you could easily communicate that without being so patronizing. people do it all the time! there are tons of things that i dont know about. unfortunately for you, this is the one thing i know a LOT about.
as for when loki has been subjected to transphobic jokes, well, thanks for giving me an excuse to make a post that ive been meaning to make for a while now. let me start off by saying: loki is genderfluid, and i am genderfluid myself. this list contains things that i personally found to be insulting or uncomfortable. not every trans person may agree with me, but that doesnt mean it doesnt need further examination. this list may also not be exhaustive because im not going to spend hours trawling through comics at 10:30 in the morning no matter how badly i want to prove you wrong.
we all know that loki was officially recognized as transgender and bi/pansexual (depending on your preference i guess, i like them as pan) in loki: agent of asgard (2014). however, never once does anyone in the series use any of the actual WORDS to communicate this. never does anyone say “genderfluid” or “transgender” or “bi” or “pan” or “queer” or even “lgbt”. odin calls them “my child who is both a son and a daughter” which is very binary and not a great take on genderfluidity, but hey, odin right? this isnt part of the list, i just think its something that people need to talk about more.
anyway, after that is when the bullshit starts. i mean, ignoring how making loki a queer-coded villain from the beginning was scuzzy, ignoring the almost 50 years time where they did play that role, and ignoring the whole lady loki thing where they were pretty much portrayed as a man pretending to be a woman. heres the list:
vote loki (2016) issue 1 by christopher hastings and langdon foss
loki “turns into a woman” because it might do better in the polls. the reporter whose name i dont care to look up points this out because thats a totally acceptable thing to do when you see a trans person. after these few pages it never comes up again. lokis genderfluidity is being used for a cheap joke here. dont even get me started on how female-presenting loki is portrayed as being more clean and feminine than male-presenting loki, which is in and of itself a form of transphobia: that transgender women have to be ultra feminine to be accepted as the gender they are.
the mighty thor (2015) issue 3 by jason aaron and russell dauterman
loki summons a bunch of other versions of themselves for seemingly no reason, and of course all of them are presenting in a masculine way because lokis genderfluidity is only acknowledged when convenient. lady loki from dark reign pops up and says that since shes the only REAL female loki, its her job to fight jane as thor. now, im not going to sit here and unpack all of that for you, so please fire up your critical thinking skills and try to decide why exactly this is bad.
infinity wars (2018) issue 5 by gerry duggan and mike deodato jr
i went and scanned my physical copy of this just for you. here we see loki leading their team to talk to the child version of gamora who lives inside the soul stone. once they get there, emma says that she and ms marvel will go in alone because it “calls for a womans touch” and loki would just get them killed. in case youre missing the subtext, emma is saying here that loki cant do this, but a woman can, which means she is calling loki a fake woman, or at best, shes completely ignoring their gender and calling them a man.
these are just the three examples that stick out the most in my mind. its worth mentioning that the only time loki has “become a woman” (i hate using this phrase btw) is in those couple pages in vote loki, and the only time that loki has been actively called genderfluid was in squirrel girl (2015) issue 27. yknow, squirrel girl. the series that no one takes seriously and will insist isnt canon even though it is?
there is a very insidious form of quiet transphobia simply in the fact that no one at marvel will acknowledge lokis identity, much less say it out loud or use the correct terminology. in fact, ever since agent of asgard (the series that cemented lokis trans and pan-ness) ended, many writers including jason aaron and gerry duggan have all but ignored that it happened, erasing the progress that loki made as a person as well as their newly gained autonomy and, indirectly, the fact that they were ever confirmed as genderfluid and pansexual.
one last thing that i want to say is that while it may be a rule that loki never stays dead, subjecting a trans and gay character to repeated deaths for the sake of furthering plot is NOT a good thing. having the gay come back does not erase the fact that you buried them in the first place. being that loki is amab, this is extra sketchily tied to violence against trans women, which is a point that we all need to consider.

More Alike Than They Realize (Gravity Falls One-Shot)
Word Count: ~1700
Summary: Stan finds a jittery, apologetic Ford up late one night, and the following conversation doesn’t go anywhere near where he thought it was going. Post-Weirdmageddon.
Warnings: None
Contains a lot more fluff and meta jokes than the summary suggests.
For the first time since Weirdmageddon, Stan woke up knowing exactly who, where, and when he was. The bulk of his memories, especially the enjoyable ones from the past summer and his childhood, had returned within about forty-eight hours, but six days later he was still having occasional lapses, the worst of which occurred upon waking up – until now, apparently. He hoped it would last.
He rolled over and looked at his clock. 12:15 A.M. Well, that was less cause for celebration. His head hurt – not unusual lately – and his mouth was dry – not anything to worry about, but still unpleasant.
Careful not to make any sound that could wake Ford or the kids, he made his way down to the kitchen. Warm milk usually helped him get to sleep.
I hope there’s still some left, he thought. The kids and I have been going through a lot since –
“Stanley, is everything alright?” Ford had been sitting at the kitchen table in complete darkness aside from the multi-colored glow of his laptop screen. “Do you know who I am?”
Stan hurriedly rushed to the fridge. “Don’t worry, Sixer, I remember fine. Just wanted get somethin’ to drink before I go to back to bed.” Ford’s concern was pretty reasonable given the state Stan was usually in when he wandered the Shack at night, and had Stan actually been in the middle of a lapse his brother’s presence would have been appreciated, but at the moment he didn’t want Ford worrying about him. He wanted to sleep.
“That’s great to hear,” Ford told him. “But Stanley, we need to talk.” He put himself between Stan and the door. “I was a fool, I realize that now. I hope you’ll forgive me.”
“Ford, you already apologized,” Stan replied. “About a hundred times. I promise, I’ve forgiven you –”
Stan suddenly noticed Ford’s eyes were bloodshot and his hair was even more of an unkempt mess than usual. “Stanford, are you feelin’ okay? You look… paranoid. Do you need to run more tests to make sure Bill is –”
Realization dawned on Ford’s face – and then he chuckled sadly, like he was laughing at himself rather than Stan. “Oh, no, Stan. This isn’t about Weirdmageddon. I didn’t worry you too much, did I?”
“Wait, then what is it –” Stan noticed the bowl on the kitchen table next to Ford’s laptop. “Is that popcorn? How the hell did you make popcorn at midnight without waking up the whole house?”
“It’s just simple sound-wave cancelling technology I picked up in Dimension B-56,” Ford replied automatically. “But the point is, I need to completely and sincerely take back what I said to you and about your… taste in entertainment on my second full day back in this dimension. I made a hasty judgement based on the show’s… target demographics, and I see now that I was wrong. So very, very wrong.”
“Sixer, you’re not making any… wait.” Stan suddenly remembered what had aired on Ford’s second day back in Gravity Falls. “You started watching Ducktective, didn’t you?”
“I did, Stanley! And it’s so much better than I was emotionally prepared for! After you saved me from Probabilitor that one day, I asked Dipper if I could join you watching the new episode, but he said it would be full of spoilers and showed me how I could stream it from the beginning when I had the time – and now I’m addicted! I can’t believe I called it a kids’ show; the mysteries of the overarching story transcend age demographics like nothing I’ve ever seen before! I’m nowhere near caught up and I already have so many theories! I’m not even sure if the younger Ducktective we saw in the time travel episode was actually him!”
“Whoa whoa whoa, Poindexter, slow down.” A grin was spreading across Stan’s face. “How far in have you gotten? Ten episodes?”
“Twelve,” Ford corrected. “I just finished the one where his rival Pete the pelican was wrongly accused and came to Ducktective for help –”
“Hey, that’s a really underrated one!”
“Wait, who didn’t like it? That was some of the finest comedy I’ve seen in the entire multiverse!”
“Dipper said Pete’s change of heart was unrealistic! Can you believe it?”
“If I wasn’t indebted to him for introducing me to the show in the first place, he would be dead to me,” Ford agreed in an overly dramatic tone.
“You gotta watch the next couple episodes right now, Sixer. Episode 13 is a goddamn emotional journey, and Episode 14 – well, I don’t want to spoil it. It needs to be seen to be believed, anyways. And then rewatched multiple times after learning what happens in the season finale.”
“Are you going to stay to watch alongside me?” Ford asked as he sat back down in front of his laptop.
“And miss you tearing up?” Stan pulled up a chair. “Pass the popcorn, would ya?”
“We’ll see about that,” Ford replied, but when Ducktective was finally reunited with his long-lost partner Steve, he couldn’t help but shed a single tear. Stan shed quite a few more, despite having seen the episode at least twice before, but Ford didn’t rub it in his face.
Ford was a bit confused, however, when the town erected a hyper-realistic statue of Ducktective to honor him for his continued work, and Stan bawled his eyes out seeing how Ducktective refused to look at the monument for longer than a few seconds.
“He’s just not used to the attention! What’s so sad about that?” Ford asked.
“You don’t understand,” Stan sobbed. It took all of his willpower not to explain that the statue reminded Ducktective of his long-lost twin gone evil. Ford had more or less guessed the twist already thanks to the time travel episode and the extra room in Ducktective’s childhood home, but Stan was drawing on all his con man power to act like Ford’s theory was crazy.
During a lull in the action in Episode 17, Ford paused the video and said: “I’m getting a little tired, but I can’t stop watching yet. Do you mind if we go sit somewhere where I won’t wake up with back pains in case I do fall asleep?”
Stan was also very tired, but there was no way he was going to miss Ford’s reaction to the next episode’s reveal. “While we’re at it, let’s go someplace where you won’t wake up the kids when you scream. There’s a big plot twist comin’ up.”
Ford closed the laptop. “I’d suggest the basement, but it’s probably pretty cold down there. We can go to my private study.”
Stan frowned. “Not exactly a lot of comfortable furniture in there, is there?”
“No, especially not after I cleaned it out. I was thinking we could bring blankets – wait, you’ve been in there? It’s supposed to be a secret!”
Stan snorted. “Sixer, I lived in this house for thirty years. Now go get those blankets.”
“Great Uncle Ford? Grunkle Stan? Are you guys okay? What are you doing down here?”
Stan tried to sit up, but something above him slipped, and several surprisingly heavy blankets fell on his face. Besides, he didn’t really want to get up. He was reminded of the good old days when he and Ford would hang some blankets from the top bunk, then sit on Stan’s bed together reading comic books, telling ghost stories, and generally making a mess with snacks.
“Morning, Dipper,” he heard Ford mumble. “I’m sorry we didn’t make breakfast…”
“Grunkle Ford, we were so worried about you!” Mabel yelled. “We thought you got kidnapped by gnomes or one of the last few eye-bats or something! But this whole time, you were just down here in your secret room?! You even built a whole blanket fort without us!”
“Oh, I’m so sorry.” Ford pulled his laptop out from under his blankets. “I didn’t even consider the possibility that you wouldn’t realize where we were. We just didn’t want to wake you with our reactions to Ducktective.” He glared at Stan. “I can’t believe I predicted Ducktective’s twin brother almost a whole season in advance and Stan just pretended that my theory was ridiculous.”
“Hey, what was I supposed to do, spoil the ending of the best episode in the whole show?”
“How about simply not making fun of me for ‘looking too deep’ into everything?”
Mabel shook her head. “I can’t believe you nerds.”
“Hey, you can say that about Ford, but not me,” Stan complained. “I’m not like him and Dipper, not at –”
“You kind of are, though,” Ford told him, trying and failing not to laugh. “Obviously not to the same extent as myself, but we did just stay up until three in the morning watching a children’s show and discussing elaborate conspiracy theories about it. We’re more alike than you realize, Stanley.”
“So? It was one time!”
“I seem to recall we did this kind of thing pretty often when we were kids. Obviously not on a laptop, but with equally nerdy works of fiction nonetheless.”
“You’re an honorary nerd now whether you like it or not, Grunkle Stan,” Dipper added.
Stan shook his head. “Ya know, I was gonna apologize for making you worry, but now I’m not so sure.”
“You should apologize for ruining our blanket fort, Stanley,” Ford chided jokingly. “It was an absolute marvel of engineering before you decided to drag down the roof.”
“A real marvel of engineering wouldn’t let its roof get dragged down that easily!”
Ford frowned. “Uh, let’s go get breakfast. Kids, do you know if there’s any pancake mix left?”
“Ha, so you admit I have a point!”
“Honestly,” Mabel interrupted, “I’m not mad anymore that you guys disappeared into the basement to build a blanket fort and eat popcorn and watch your show. I’m just mad that you didn’t invite us.”
“Yeah!” Dipper added. “I wanted to see Ford’s reaction to the season finale.”
Ford smiled. “Well, we still have about… ten episodes before I’m caught up?”
“Eight,” Stan corrected. “Plus the shorts. But yeah, you kids could join us.”
“Will there be popcorn?” Mabel asked.
“Of course!”
Mabel and Dipper exchanged a look.
“Are we forgiven?” Stan asked.
The kids nodded in unison. “You’re forgiven.”
Thanks for reading! Ford’s reaction to Ducktective is loosely based on my own reaction to Gravity Falls: skeptical when first learning of it, then genuinely interested after hearing good things, then way too emotionally invested in it.
#gravity falls#stanley pines#stanford pines#mabel pines#dipper pines#rosalia writes fic#fluff#i was reading and writing some pretty angsty fic when i took a break to write this#which explains why it's so much more self-indulgent and happy than it seems at first#anyways if i could sum up my initial reaction to gf when i first watched in 2017#with one line from this fic#it would be 'so much better than i was emotionally prepared for'#might be projecting onto ford just a bit#but it's undeniably in character for him
