There was a stillness surrounding them that drifted upward like the ash in the air. Baldur’s Gate laid in ruins around them; what remained of a beachside shack provided them respite from the agonizing last few hours. From here, Anya could see a glimpse of the orange sun making dark pools of blood shine brightly on the white sand beach. How she longed to be that sun, unaware of the nightmares that plagued this mortal plane. The sun would never change; the sun just was. Would she be the sun, things would be different, surely.

She pulled her lover closer to her, nuzzling her nose into his hair as he silently wept into her chest. They should be celebrating, should they not? They destroyed the Netherbrain, the tadpoles were gone; this was a time to look eagerly into the future, instead of worrying that it would slip through her fingers if she didn’t think quickly enough. Her eyes narrowed at the peachy sky, silently wishing that her glare alone would have the sun set faster. Another hour, surely, and her love would be free of harm. His skin would not char and flake and turn to smoke like the buildings around them. He would be able to walk freely without the day’s light becoming his death wish.

He did not deserve this, not after everything he had been through, the trials he’d faced. The sun should be so lucky to shine her light upon him. Her eyes fixed on the star in her arms, who was now quiet as she rocked him gently.

“Astarion,” she said, quietly, as if it were just them two left in the world.

He said nothing, though he shifted slightly in her arms.

“You know you are oh so precious to me, don’t you?”

He nodded against her chest.

She pushed at his shoulders slightly, enough for him to pull away. Cupping his face in her hands, Anya’s face twisted into sorrow as she took in the state of him. Blood, dirt, and tears trekked down his beautiful face, and his eyes were tinged red and swollen. She hated seeing him like this, and she despised the thing that made him feel this way in the first place. “I mean it,” she said. “You are the most precious thing in my life; the only thing I care about. Do you understand?”

Another nod, though the sadness that glazed his eyes slowly turned to gratitude.

“I need to hear you say it.”

“Yes,” he said, voice hoarse.

“Good,” she said, placing a kiss on his pouty lips. “Because this,” she motioned around them as she pulled away, “this does not change a thing. I will still follow you to the ends of this world. You will not go through this alone—Gods be damned—I will not let you be alone ever again. I love you too much for that to happen.” Tears welled in his eyes again, and he let out a sharp sob. Anya gathered him in her arms again, kissing his white curls that were tinged with blood. “Sal Thor va, va will sehan aul Tel' Crith. Sal Thor.”

He shook in her arms silently, clinging onto her as if she might slip through his fingers like sand. She kissed his temple, eyes falling back to the blushing sky.

Be she the sun, she would not dare hurt him.

“Sal Thor va, va will sehan aul Tel' Crith. Sal Thor.” (Elvish) = I promise you, you will walk in the sun. I promise.

I was walking out of the Walmart today, and a car passed me, and I got this incredibly vivid impression. It wasn't really in words, but if I had to put it into words, the two key points would be

a). I needed to watch that car and

b). That I needed to be careful, because the driver of the car was a massive bitch.

It kind of took me by surprise, because I really had no reason to be beefing with that car, and I also hadn't really had an impression like that since I was religious, which was in my teen years. Right? It'd been a decade since I had a little voice whisper in my ear, and I'd basically written it off as nonsense.

Anyway, I watched the car, because The Spirits or whatever were very insistent that I did. Car drove fine, went into the parking spot, inched forward, and right when it should've just stopped, the driver gunned it for some reason and it ran into the curb and cracked its bumper.

So, the driver got out, and she went to the front of the car to check that yes, she had cracked her bumper, and then she turned to look at me. The parking lot wasn't empty, but we were the only two people standing in that row, and I'd probably been staring at her for tenish seconds now.

She demanded very angrily to know why I hadn't warned her of the curb. And I could have said I didn't know you were about to gun it or is it my job to help every stranger park, or even could you have even heard me, inside your car?

And all of those would have been fine, but I was really, really busy digesting that I had somehow communed with Mormon Jesus again for the first time in fifteen years, and that the communion had mostly been there to let me watch someone park badly (?), so what I responded with was:

"Because it was foretold."

And I can't tell which would be funnier, if she went silent because there's not much to be said to that, or if she went silent because in Utah, she might actually believe me, but we parted ways without more words.

I'm still kind of digesting this myself, actually.
