Vienna Teng. my OTM (one true musician), queen of my musical heart, comfort artist I always come back to. I think Spotify told me I was in the top less than 1% of listeners last year? and that's been true the last several years running. I'm so excited for the new music this year that was promised to me. or if it doesn't happen this year I'll be excited for it next year, or whenever it happens, I don't even care. would try to pick a favorite song but honestly I don't know that I could

ThouShaltNot. I tripped over this one because of @shorelle back in my livejournal days and they've been a mainstay of my listening rotation ever since. I love their lyrics and their sound both. very different from most of the others on this list but still a fave, for sure. favorite song is probably "We Could Have Flown Like Pollen" though it's a toss up between a lot of them on that album.

The Crane Wives. I found these guys through "Tongues and Teeth" which is a #shipping aesthetic song and then learned that I just really like the rest of their music also. "Tongues and Teeth" probably remains my favorite of theirs but I also have a big soft spot for "The Hand That Feeds."

Delta Rae. another more recent discovery where I just really like their general sound/style. I think my favorite is "Chasing Twisters" but I also really like "Forgive the Children We Once Were."

Within Temptation. this spot was a bit of a toss up between them, Nightwish, and Blind Guardian (mostly for Nightfall on Middle Earth, lbr), but ultimately I landed on Within Temptation. bonus points for giving me hella nostalgia for a very specific period in my life. this is another one where my favorite song is a serious open question, but I am deeply attached to the entire The Silent Force album.

What you’ve done here is given me an 11hr 8m playlist, so I’m not gonna go through and review it song by song like I usually would /silly. Here’s some general thoughts just from looking through it though, and I may give it a more in depth listen at a later date!

- lots of Taylor Swift. No judgement from me, I’m just not familiar with her music.

- Actually loads of these songs/artists I don’t really recognize so you’re gonna have to wait for me to actually listen to some of those (if I do ever get around to it)

- Hozier, generally speaking, is spot on. I write tompercy to Hozier all the time. Francesca Hozier is especially spot on.

five things just from the top of my head would be:

oddly enough, "dead" fandoms. More specifically, the people in those fandoms that are still there regardless of the dwindling population because of how much they enjoy being there. It's kinda inspiring ^-^

brain scratchy songs! Due to my constant state of understimulation I've found myself drawn toward more emotionally intense or 'cluttered' music. But still, it doesn't ever really hit right. So when I do find something like that it's the best feeling! I get back shivers and everything :D (my current top brain songs are AD Infententium by Stupendium, most, if not all, Crane Wives songs, but I'm alternating between Tongues and Teeth, and Scars, and the mom's songs from Carrie the musical soundtrack, however, tw for religious trauma and the like)

midnight walks! My roommate and I have been doing them for a while as a means of avoiding what we've deemed "midnight madness" and they're real calming! I even made a little drabble based on them for my English class lol

Okay, well, hot dog. I finally got to this ask. I am so sorry for not replying sooner, putting the concepts/ideas in my head into word format that is understandable for people can be hard and requires loads of thinking on my end. The plight of being a blonde, weep for me. 

But, I finally got to this, so thank you for your patience my little funky anon that I may or may not know;;;;00000.

I also found it best to just to pick out the lyrics and describes the reasoning/meaning for Deshan.

Metaphors by Crane Wives

“I’ve gotten good on leaning on metaphors/I’vegotten good at living someone’s else page.”

Deshan’s job in the clan was to be a spy, they were trained from a young age to lie and deceive people–carefully masking themselves and playing different roles. 

“I cut my teeth on secondhand sentiment/you can’t trust a single thing I say”

They are emotionally distant from those they love, and they lie to everyone. They are someone who doesn’t really talk about themselves, and answer questions vaguely. They come in with their warm persona, asking questions, and just,,,,uses it to disarm people–to make people underestimate them, trust them, yet never letting them have any grasp over them. 

“But I always dig up bones in your sympathy/I cant trust a single thing you say”

Digging up someone’s bones is a metaphor for someone who dwells and regrets loosing a relationship in the past. This could be about Deshan’s relationship with themself and their identity as a Dalish (Ir tel’him) or their strained relationship with their brother, Viveras. 

Their trust is hard to earn. They’re a spy, they know how easy it is for people to turn. Yet, even with all their experience–they still ended up trusting the wrong people, and they are hurt from it (Solas, Inquisition, etc.)

Take me to War by Crane Wives

“All of the fire I’ve swallowed/All of the sparks that went dark in my gut/I am always burning up”

This describes how Deshan bit their tongue a lot during Inquisition, playing their warm mask even when they want to rage and cry. Trying their best to ignore the snide remarks of their culture, the worship of them, and the eyes constantly on their back. 

“Dress me in red and throw your roses/And I’ll rankle the beasts with words/its a graceless dance of epithets/we learn to make someone hurt.”

This refers to how people “throw their roses” at them, praising them as they struggle with their declining mental health. “A graceless dance of epithets” epithets can be a term for abuse, this connects to the point above. 

“Give me a fight I can’t resist/Give me something to break with my fist/Take me to war/Oh, honey, I dare you”

This refers to Deshan’s rage and hurt. They want to break things, scream, and to never be a thing to worship anymore. This also refers to Deshan’s rage towards Solas, and the warpath they are set upon–to ruin his plans, maybe save him. If not, they would stab him in his chest than his back–such as he had done to them. A kindness in their eyes.

“I watched a weed usurp the garden/And it poisoned the rest of the crops/It would take days of fighting stubborn roots/To tear the whole damn thing out.”

The corruption in the Inquisition from Deshan’s eyes. Their hate towards the Inquisition as well.

“So I will leave it where it’s standing/And instead I will find me a match/I’ll burn it all to kindling/I’ll burn it all down to ash.”

Disbanding the Inquisition(which was their orginally idea before the whole Solas and Qunari thing happened) And I had a scene planned out where they either start a fire with either the Book of Inquisition, Skyhold, or Inquisition’s flags. Also their rage and anger about how the Inquisition turned into another power-hungry organization, something they never wanted to happen. And to prevent it from becoming like the Inqusition of the Old, they disbanded it. Freeing themselves from it, and shaking off the chains that was forced upon them.

I wanted to have the story of two people who feels the utmost guilt over things they did in the past and recognize the sadness that one another carries-the guilt, and just learn to form a friendship and romantic relationship. Solas and Deshan notices that about one another, yet they don’t brooch the subject–it creates a small understanding, although their situations are completely different. 

“Honey, just put your sweet lips on my lips/We should just kiss like real people do.”

Both characters had titles to play, roles that were forced upon them. Titles replace names, makes people less. When Solas and Deshan are together, they are not those titles. Solas isn’t Fen’harel and Deshan isn’t the Herald/Inquisitor, they are just themselves. Solas and Deshan. Real people.

This also connects with Solas' derealization, as he grows close with the people in Skyhold–the more real they are to him. 

Also, another great song that I feel like describes Solas’ feelings/opinions on romance/friendship is “It will come back” by Hozier.

Amount of sleep: I regularly get 9-10 hours of sleep because otherwise I feel so bad 😥 I am envious of people who need less because for me 8 hours and 4 hours feel the same 🤢

Dream job: probably also a professor, like Crow! I'd love to be able to do research on things I'm interested in (it's always gay nuns, but recently it's also polygyny within medieval Jewish communities), and chat with colleagues about theirs, and write articles, and make lots of powerpoint presentations (I love them because I can even script in my jokes), and see what the younger generation are interested in when it comes to history! However, as we have established I am a very tired person, so I'm not sure how well I would cope with the expectation of out of hours work.

Wearing: Blue silk pyjama bottoms decorated with little white vines and flowers, brown walking socks, and a long fluffy hooded! dressing gown which I would probably call maroon or burgundy. Don't judge me for this (or do, I deserve it).  For the more wattpad experience we can also say that I have thrown my long brown hair into a messy bun.

Books/movies that summarise me: I could ask my friends, or I could just insert a picture of the DSM-V here because that's what they'll all send me

Favourite song: I don't have favourite anythings to be honest, but my most played song this year (at a whopping 22 times) was Zitti e Buoni by Måneskin. Lyric-wise I'm still obsessed with Tongues & Teeth by The Crane Wives, specifically "I know that you mean so well, but I am not a vessel for your good intent".

Favourite instrument: I've played clarinet, recorder, guitar, and keyboard, none of which I had any talent for 😂

Aesthetic: I've been told so many things about how I dress so I'll try to keep it brief. I own an eclectic collection of dresses (probably 60+) and tend to favour colourful patterns for daily wear and single colour grecian-style drapes for formal events. I likewise own lot of colourful patterned tops (described by my friends as "pretty", "flattering", "interesting", and "like you took it from your mum's wardrobe" (she gave it to me)) which I wear with jeans. That said, I can most commonly be found in my "grandad" looks of a men's shirt open over a vest or buttoned to the bare minimum of decency, or one of my two favourite golf jumpers (one grey, one beige).

Favourite authors: I don't have favourite authors of books (though I definitely do for fanfiction), but I do want to read more Margaret Atwood because I've only read The Handmaid's Tale and that one quote from The Robber Bride that lives rent free in my head.

Random fun fact: I managed to get super glue in my mouth when I was decorating a christmas bauble with watch parts last night! Very on brand, I'm notoriously clumsy. I also only managed to super glue two of my fingers together, so that is a new record
