I just watched this and from 1923 to 1951 I knew maybe half of the songs and after 1951 I knew every single song until 2016, where I apparently lost my connection to pop music... and i'm just 33

from 2016 until 2023 i only knew the 2017 one. oof. I literally don't know the other songs.

Good reveal au, where after learning phantom's identity and realizing the atrocities that the GIW have committed (or alternatively, ethical science au, where they find out the GIW plagarized them), the fenton parents decided to create the 'ultimate ghost-ending weapon' and sell it to the agents.

They go absolutely overboard, describing to the agents in meticulous detail how it evaporates any ghost it hits near-instantly and describing it quite ruthlessly in the blueprints, and soon the GIW have raplaced all their main weapons with the new gun.

Except it doesn't actually kill ghosts. It's the Fenton Bazooka. You know, the one that creates a portable portal to suck the ghost back into the ghost zone? What they actually did was retool it slightly to make it look more grusome than it actually is. They even added a beacon in Phantom's Keep, which all Fenton Bazookas will target when they open a portal, so the ghosts are always delivered to the keep.

From there, Phantom stationed an emergency medical team at the keep to treat the many injured and ragged ghosts that the GIW 'destroyed,' and to explain what just happened.

What they didn't anticipate was that now that the GIW have a mass-produced weapon that they believed would effectively eradicate ghosts, they would go on the offensive. They have a number of cities they've been monitoring but didn't want to get involved in without better tools.

One of those cities is Gotham.

And the Bats are ectocontaminated enough to register as ghosts.

Batman witnessed several of his children get evaporated by green energy weapons within mere moments of each other. He's absolutely gutted. Devastated. They didn’t even stand a chance.

He'll get his revenge, and it's frighteningly easy to track the weapon to private subcontractors. The Doctors Fenton, in Illinois. Their research calls for the genocide of all ghost kind, and apparently, that war started by killing his own children.

His children will not die in vain.

He gets to Amity Park and finds the Engineer's Nightmare of a building that is Fentonworks, but that night, before he can hack through the security and break in, one of the windows opens.

It's one of his kids that he had watched evaporate before his very eyes. They give him a silent signal of one of their identifying security codes and gesture for him to come inside.

Is it a trap? A prank in poor taste? Utterly genuine?

He goes through the window.

All of his dead kids are there, wearing borrowed pajamas and only their dominoes to conceal their identities. Daniel Fenton (son of the Fentons, this is his bedroom, has voiced a few arguments against his parent's views, but still an unknown) is among the crowd of teens and young adults, twirling on an office chair and obnoxiously sipping a capri sun.

"First thing you need to know, Bats," Daniel says after finishing his drink, "is that my parents are absolutely NOT genocidal ectophobic scumbags, and that is the reason why your kids are still alive."

book 7 spoilers <3 very long rant im sorry!!

it was never meant to be this way. when he was such an ass to us in the prologue, when he laid those pesky remarks upon us and immediately assuming that we got into NRC as a janitor because we weren't good enough without any prior knowledge of how we were brought here against our will and having to adapt to such an unfamiliar environment where everything - trends, names, history, and even the currency - were different. he didn't know about the throbbing headache we had while the headmage was explaining the school's curriculum and suddenly bringing up the word "magic" into the conversation like it was foreign language.

he thinks he's above us just because we're a clueless student who couldnt cast any spells and took up the miserable job just for the sake of money and to live. he had this one-way "not my problem!!" mindset about us that he dipped the moment after because he never would have suspected that we would grow to be something more important, something more irreplaceable in his life.

he never meant to test the waters, and he's drowning by mistake.

his concern for you gets more obvious as each book advances (or was it always obvious??). you're just an otherworlder oblivious to the dangers that lurk in twisted wonderland, so it's only casual for him to fret about when you've been taken into scarabia with minimal escape routes, to be the first one to notice that you were missing among the entourage of people that have been kidnapped, to be the only one to point out that you weren't in the best condition AND suggesting to bring you back home in case the party was all too much. he knows how vulnerable you are, and he jumps into action as quick as possible because that's basically his brand. nothing deeper!!! (unknown dangers lurk around you on the daily, but you lurk in his mind so much more than he lets on. you're probably more used to the dangers of magic than he's used to the thought of you occupying his mind 24/7. isnt that ironic)

and he didn't consider the complications of how dangerous it could be for the headmage to send us back to our original world, possibly damaging the very fabrics of time and space and ceasing to exist while transporting - he just instantly goes to the part where the news was positive and that we could travel between Twisted Wonderland and earth in one piece, blocking out his surroundings just to see your smile, as that was possibly the happiest you could have ever been in front of him.

imagine each time he hangs out with someone new, or if someone has gained a romantic interest in him once you've left, he tries to find a part of "you" in them in his peripheral vision. whether they have an ounce of bravery that you had, whether they're as understanding as you are to know that he isn't just a human built of jokes and pranks, whether they won't doubt him like the rest did - as you were the only one who truly believed in his capability to truly lead the rest out of danger.

he could beg for other people to believe in him, to see that his skills could draw out much more if he really wanted to, but he didn't have to do that with you. in a flashing moment of possible failure, he turned to you in a heartbeat, uncharacteristically, desperately calling out for you to save him because he had no idea what was happening. he almost started to lose himself and quickly realises that the power he was wielding so suddenly wasn't some lousy spell, that it could possibly cause someone's life, and you were there to steady him when he needed it the most. a rarity of a scene he entrusted his entire body to you with. you believed in him. you ARE the betterment of him.

you held his hand like a vow, to protect each other and strengthen through every obstacle and turmoil that drives you one step closer to becoming a better version of yourself. your hand, tightly coiled around his, radiated the warmth and comfort he needed in his times of darkness and inner conflict.

it should've been you. you're perfect.

and that's why his dream still has you in it. it doesn't have to be one way or the other, you can simply go back and forth to his world and your own in just a snap! he could never dream of you leaving his sight and grasp, hindering him from ever telling you how much you actually meant. he has all the time in the world.

and that's what he wants, but his heart says otherwise, and that's fine. he just wants you to be safe and see him for who he is. you inspired him to take pride in his name, as an ace can do anything!!

Like look I love them being in love and crazy devoted to each other as much as the next person but really I just wanted it to end like "It's okay, they have time to grow and just be normal and just be themselves now. They don't have to rush anything, they can take their time." And they delivered, they so delivered because now they have seven years to just grow and be together and be happy and I love it. Let them have it they deserve it. Sure, I would have loved the angst if Callum died but I love this just as much. Like yeah things are great right now but that doesn't mean we have to rush and make them better, we can just bask in this peace that we have for now, we can just exist and see what happens. Perfect ending, the only ending I wanted really. And "You know what I love about you? Everything." It was so good, it was a great ending for them because time was something these two rarely had and now they've seven years of time and that's just great

I'm just a big fan of the two most problematic characters (that aren't antagonists lol) hanging out. Hiei is like. Literally a murderer and used to be on spirit world's watchlist while atsuko was a bit of a terror on the street in her heyday and honestly a shitty mom. Very equal crimes as you can see

Something something atsuko not really having the tools to be a mom and for better or worse she did it anyway and hiei just wonders for a split second. If the ice maidens had shown a bit more mercy. Been just a bit more lenient in their rules. Would he be more like the others. Like yusuke. Because sure he's rough and brash and mean and does things just for the sake and thrill of a fight but he's also got this kindness about him. A sort of softness that hiei has to assume having a parent put there, like it did with kurama albeit belatedly. Before he dismisses this entirely because the thought of being properly raised gives him hives.

Besides that any similarities between kurama and yusuke can't be from having a mom. Because atsuko is not like shiori. Honestly she's pretty much her opposite in every way. And hiei maybe has a sort of respect for that if he ever familiarizes himself with ningenkai enough to fathom what that even entails.

Anyway. Never should've been a mother vs never should've been born. Existing as they are against everyone's wishes because well. fuck them.

Hiei is the only one who can be told that upon finding out she was pregnant atsuko's approach to keeping the baby wasn't because of some automatic love or maternal instinct to protect at the time but because everyone was so sure she couldn't. and in retrospect she feels kinda bad about it but what yusuke doesn't know won't kill him. She loves him. even if that hadn't been her thought process at 14. the reason she looks after him now isn't cos the wiseass she used to share an apartment called her a tramp who wouldn't be able to keep her son alive. It's changed she changed. But still. Yusuke doesn't need to know

Similarly atsuko is the only one who actually gets told about yukina by hiei himself. And unlike literally everyone else she doesn't think he should tell her. Like sure if you ever want to I say go for it. But if not...eh who cares? I never told yusuke that the guy that meets me at his cart every now and again is his dad. Some things you just don't need to say. Most of the important shit is just known. Translation being yukina probably already knows. it's one of those things that doesn't need to be talked about because what does it really change. Hiei won't suddenly be more open to interaction and spend every waking moment with her and yusuke wont suddenly go running to that bum all teary eyed and open armed. It won't change a thing. Yukina will pretend she doesn't know that hiei is spying from a distant tree without a word and yusuke will pretend he doesn't see his nose and jawline in one of his customers that only hangs around when his mom does. Because who cares, really.

the idea of them having things they've done they're not proud of but the past doesn't haunt them. it doesn't keep them up at night in fact they sleep fine. It's just a part of them. A shitty part but hey. They never claimed to be good.

This is getting away from me to a dramatic extent jesus but I can see them having meaningful moments in dead of night that nobody really knows about so when they all meet in a group for once and mfs see hiei light atsuko's cigarette for her they're like ?????? What the fuck is up with you two. Hiei is like we're acquaintances.
