remembered the monk i was friends with last year and thought hey i should write him an email but literally i never knew his email address or last name nor could i remember his home monastery because we were studying together at redacted and i mostly only talked to him when he was pouring me wine but through a series of convoluted half-remembered words found myself on an abbey's website that sounded right? now of course they do not list their monks online but they DO have pictures. so i clicked in order through all of their site's links and FINALLY saw a picture of my friend and now i have the abbey's email address and i think a message will get to him. what disease do we call this

reason 1934 why I'm sad the Old Monk Set did not make it into the final cut of the game:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
the peak we got at the fur on his neck and backside 😭😭😭😭😭
I will forever be sad about this loss. It genuinely feels like the final model in the game doesn't have much or any fur on the neck. idk if it's because most armors have a high collar so they removed the fur on the neck there?? But ugh, I love how much fur we got see in this old set.
just close your eyes and imagine wrapping your arms around him and kissing that fur exposed spot on his back ok. and now open them and weep at the loss.

my knight-monk agenda strikes again, but this was less of a 'I read something that made me experience several emotions and a strike of inspiration at once,' and more of a 'wouldn't it be fucked up if the bejeweled skeleton saints came to life and and started. eating people. or something. in revenge. medieval catholic horror, or an older horror of not being buried right. zombies, even. a complete bastardization of holy visuals. zombies.'
it's a far away idea, but I still wanted to play around with font layouts. like, if I DID make it into a full comic: these would be visual vibes, perhaps.
it's also a little bit about the kind of intimacy that these kinds of spaces provide, or in the case of this monk: the heavy trauma of war and the death of your brother, the escape to a secluded monastery, spiritual brotherhood to make up for your dead brother, but your role as a physician keeps pulling you back to this violence you want to escape. physician, heal thyself, only you have a holy calling to serve those in need, so instead: physician, open up your wounds again. saint jude, patron saint of lost causes, give us a fucking hand here, man. amen.
Tumblr media
Homosexuality in the Renaissance: Behavior, Identity, and Artistic Expression, James M. Saslow
and this one is about earlier history than the medieval period that this comic is set in, but the monk character is sort of an exploration of earlier themes. a little bit. I like overlapping eras with each other, I've done it before and I'll do it again. this character is an exploration of some other stuff too, but mostly this book was interesting to read

traditional art of clouded monk. I really like this guy
I'm generally surprised and disappointed people don't draw him much, I can barely find any fanart online. it's odd to me becuz he's one of the More Humanoid Abnormalities, and ppl love those (take into notes: Little Red, Der Frei, Butterfly man, The magical girls, I'd even dare to say Army in Pink). but this guy? everybody forgot about him even though I believe he's genuinely intriguing and good-looking. I know I'm rambling but I'm quite sad, I feel like I'm the only one who's kinda obsessed with him. bro even made me learn what śarīra means lmao.

So when she died... Yeah. I think it was a message for me. She was saying, "I have to let go now for a little while. But it won't be forever."

what about some sort of buddy cop, same age, enemies to lovers au where obi-wan is a jedi and anakin is a coruscanti detective and they literally hate each other and have no respect for the other (obi-wan thinks anakin is a waste of the coruscant budget and a jedi wannabe; anakin thinks obi-wan is a pretentious space monk asshole)
(anakin has personally arrested obi-wan for speeding three times, drinking in public spaces 4 times -- the public space was a bar btw -- and indecent public exposure once. that last one was, tbh, fair cause obi-wan had his dick out in an alley way lol)
(obi-wan has literally stalked this asshole coruscanti cop off planet before and arrested him in his capacity as Jedi Knight for not using his turn signal when changing hyperspace lanes (once), for podracing betting (3 times), and for possession of a galacticly banned substance (twice))
it's not that they're obsessed with each other, it's just that something keeps forcing them together in the wildest, most unpredictable situations, and it's annoying as hell because they're completely fed up with each other
then the senate moves to have a new task force stood up to solve a series of Force-related crimes in the Coruscanti underworld. the task force would include a representative from the Jedi Temple and one from the Coruscanti guards, obviously. and really, obi-wan and anakin are the perfect choices! they're both highly intelligent, dedicated, trustworthy, and incorruptible.
if only they'd stop trying to push each other off the 51st story of coruscant and actually put their heads together to solve the crime

The Monk and the Monkey
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
''What are you?'' The monk asks the animal- no, the creature before him. It stands on its hind legs without any trouble nor struggle. It does not hunch, it does not move. He watches it warily, and his eyes struggle to maintain eye contact, and not to stare at the way he has been carried away from. Where the carcass of the enormous tiger that stands fallen, in a pool of blood and the heavy smell of the metallic blood that he no longer can see or smell.
But to get distracted in the human’s case, would be a mistake if not the being was quite happy yet best not to risk it.
One second, it stares and the next, it stands before him with a bright grin and a tilted head. He startles, dropping his staff as it opens its dangerous jaw to answer his question.
''I am many things,'' It starts speaking, and the Monk thinks it can see the silhouette of a monster behind, watching, in smokes and another thing, another thing that smiles, amused while the human starts to sweat, his palms getting colder and colder.
‘’A wicked demon,’’ It states, grinning with a mouth far too wide, and a grin far too sharp, while the monk gulps with tense shoulders.
‘’A celestial being,’’ It states, as it smiles with gratitude, and a smile full of joy, and the monk relaxes, without being aware, for its genuine smile resembles that of a child a bit too much, tricking him into a false sense of security.
A false sense of security it is,
For a shark may be content, but it still has a mouth full of sharp teeth and a hunger for blood when you cut open your heart and lay it bare.
‘’But moreover, I am human.’’ It says, shrugging and standing back while the monk stares. He continues to stare as it stares up at him, with its tail lazily swaying behind it. He is well aware that he should probably try to find a way to leave, instead of interacting with it, but he blurts out without thinking before his mind can catch up with him.
‘’H-human? Y-you don’t look human!’’ He exclaims, and rightfully so as well, for the being standing before him is a tad bit too hairy, with hands instead of feet and of course, not to mention, the tail it has!
‘’...’’ It stares at him in silence, and it looks up and down while he nervously shuffles.
‘’Your close minded view, as much as it amazes me, is also disappointing.’’ It finally states after an awkward amount of silence and the monk can only drape his bamboo hat over his face, halfway to avoid eye contact since it unnerves him and says nothing to refute its claims more so because he is too meek to argue with a creature who can topple over a demon four times its size.
‘’Tell me what is a god, and what is a demon?’’ It asks, and the monk has no answer which seems to frustrate the creature before him as it invades his personal space once again, forcing him to stare right into its bloody eyes with the moon in them.
The monk stutters as it sighs, snapping its fingers and the human sees magic come to life before his eyes.
‘’A god represents the ‘kind’ side of humanity, while a demon represents the ‘foul’,’’ It says with a crescent smile but a condescending tone, and the monk steps back as his eyes jump back and forth between the mirrored version of the creature.
‘’Here’s a riddle for you,’’ It doesn't look at him as it becomes one, but he thinks it might see inside him anyway.
‘’If I am both, then what am I?’’
The silence scratches on, as tiny crickets pass, and the forest quiets down as if to listen to his answer.
It's a lot of pressure, he thinks when he sees it watching him like a hawk, like the rest of the world that holds its breath.
The human thinks as he lowers his head and thinks. He eventually comes to an answer as opens his mouth as the being before him stares at him nonchalantly, yet with a slightly wagging tail, clearly full of expectations about his answer.
‘’A monkey?’’
The monk, obviously, plays it safe for he feels like this is a trap.
The monkey’s nose scrunches up, and his eyes squint.
‘’Hmph,’’ It- He almost sneers at the human. His eyebrow twitch, irritated, and his tail thumps the ground once, twice and stops still. The monk, for a second, thinks he almost might see a pout.
‘’Typical mortals.’’
He says with distaste and the Monk, Tang Sanzang, can only stare at the tiny murder monkey and think:
What are the chances that if I beg, he’ll leave me alone?’
But the monk can only weep for it will be a long fourteen years.

there's a quote from brennan lee mulligan that makes me think of why i like star wars and find the jedi so interesting:
Evil is boring. Right? I kinda believe in the banality and mundanes of evil. Evil is just selfish impulses, which at the end of the day are really easy to understand. It’s easy to understand why people do bad things. It’s like “yeah, ok, you’re selfish and scared and cruel, I get it.” Being good is complex and beautiful and hard.
to me, the jedi commitment to the light is a complex, beautiful, and hard thing. being selfless is remarkable, it's inspiring and surprising. the dark side is boring and predictable, like being selfish, scared, and cruel makes you always make the choice that lashes out or clings in greed, making everything about oneself, so evil is a very narrow way of looking at the world.
it is only by opening up to the needs of others that the entire world becomes visible and important. doing good means shining a light of awareness that acknowledges and appreciates everything for itself, and not its personal significance. it's making the hard choice to help in the face of danger and corruption, and the complex weighing of factors to determine how to act for the best outcome.
that sort of altruism is a noble, beautiful thing to celebrate in stories, the subtle and almost infinite array of bonds that can motivate someone to make the hard, selfless choice, and the humility to recognize there are some things more important than oneself. it's a vital function of art to open the soul, evoking compassion and empathy for others, to remind us that we can choose to be good.
stories like that are simply interesting to me in a way selfish indulgence is not. even with stories of corruption, it's not the darkness that's compelling to me. it's the lingering pull of the light. it's all the friction that bonds and compassion bring to a descent into selfishness. we are social beings, built to give and share, just as much as take. it's a worthy thing to try, but it's never easy.
the jedi are imho just an excellent example of doing good even when it's hard, even when it's doomed. their motivations are complex, with the outcome for many stakeholders considered, not just themselves. they may lose the fight, but they fought well, and the fruit of their goodness returns in the end, their compassion ultimately is impossible to eradicate from the galaxy.

In the vein of your class swap au, I have a crack au where the Bad Kids eventually end up having all the classes between the six of them, and essentially become a self-contained powerhouse. They all start with their canon Junior classes, but eventually-
Riz, in his goal of being the most perceptive person ever, takes to Ranger. It also helps with his long range guns, which he and Gorgug start personalising in semi-illegal ways
Adaine goes for Monk. It’s difficult, because Monk and Wizard aren’t that compatible, but Adaine has the know-how and innate anger to take it on
Kristin looks into the background of her nature/solar Godesses, and takes some levels of Druid to help with interpreting the symbolism and imagery, and eventually uses the spells similar to clerical. Doesn’t use beast forms often, but finds them especially useful when Kristin’s dex or athletics would fail
Not sure how Sorcerer would play into it. Maybe Fig, with already high charisma, would accidentally fall into it, and just decides to keep it because she realises it’s the class they’re missing
this is awesome I love the idea of coming into dnd with the mentality of ash ketchum

If I had the time and patience I would compile a collection of gifs of every time the show strongly implies Monk is asexual, because there's quite a few examples. Like there's one episode where he's at a football game with Stottlemeyer who says "This is better than sex" and then Monk, who could not care less about football, is like "Well, what isn't?" Like how am I supposed to take that?
Like, do I think this early 2000s show written by a bunch of boomers actively set out to make an asexual protagonist? No. And yet they absolutely did.
