Stimulated by Messrs Trautmann and Ekman, the delegates then undertook informal discussions in "break-out groups." You are probably familiar with this alarming term, "break-out groups." A break-out group is not a cohort of escaped prisoners, as one might think or even hope, but a random selection of folks, very often complete strangers to each other, who are presumed to form instant affinities thicker than blood in the simple act of breaking out, that is, in sitting together in a group of ten or a dozen. Break-out groups derive, I believe, from the world of church youth movements and self-help organizations; and they are probably pretty effective when the topic under discussion is one's spiritual quest or one's sexual addictions. Problems of intellectual property, alas, do not seem sufficiently magnetic to induce the spurious intimacy characteristic of the successful break-out group. One delegate—I shall not name him—broke out of the break-out group and sat in sullen, silent isolation a few yards away. He uttered but one sentence: "I do not break out."

earlier this week my young boss was gesticulating with a pencil in his hand while talking and naturally the pencil flew out of his hand but then it hit me on the leg (i am unharmed) and he was so embarrassed. the following day he came in and was like SPEAKING OF PENCILS (we were not speaking of pencils) you could sue me and the company for that. i was looking it up. did you know that? and i was like lmao of course i could yes i knew i read askamanager.org every day i thought about making a joke of it at the time. but literally whatever lmao. and then today our old boss was looking for a pencil and randomly said pencils are so dangerous you guys. and young boss and i were like so true bestie and then locked eyes. for like. a wildly long time. what does this mean what does it all mean

truly so embarrassing to have to be assigned emotional regulation homework and to actually sit down and do the worksheets and to actually feel comforted and regulated afterwards. stupid little monkey brain

A man came into the store just as we were closing and bought a book closely related to my collecting interests even though that’s not our store’s primary topical area and turned out to have also been a medievalist in a past life and when he left my coworker (Jewish grandmother) turned to me and was immediately “He’s cute!!! He’s a medievalist!!!! I think he’ll come back!!!” and frankly the dating apps are depressing why shouldn’t I hope that he’ll come back

for sure the daylight savings time debate is very stupid and I can’t say it truly matters in an industrialized nation at all. however I do find that waking up when it’s still dark out is horrifically psychologically damaging in a way that the sun setting at 4pm isn’t. so I am very ready for the clocks to change this weekend

help! my sister turns 24 next week and i need to gift her something besides baking her birthday cake. where do people buy fun offbeat presents these days? i would describe my sister as the most basic person i know (she is actively invested in various lifestyle youtuber dramas?) except that all the gift guides for basic women in their 20s that you find in eg cosmo or nymag suggest that women in their 20s are decorating their apartments and/or dressing up and going out while my sister still lives with our parents and has genuinely never been to the club and doesn't want to... what do you get a person like that?

okay so the conference I applied to that’s supposed to give me an answer by Monday sent an email this afternoon that says I got a $500 grant “to support my participation” at the conference and links to a Google form to accept it. But crucially the email and form do not say anything about whether my paper was accepted. And it is now after 5pm on a Friday. I feel crazyyyyyyyy
