Glad I made time for the arts this month. The #dansfestival outdoor performance by @SingaporeBallet was enjoyable, though IMHO as a lay audience, the second piece #Triptych by American choreographer #ValCaniparoli could have been more powerful if it were performed in a confined space like a black box theatre instead. #EveningVoices by British choreographer #TimRushton was beautiful; the evening skyline of the #MarinaBay area was a perfect backdrop. Paused otw home to check out the #SingaporeInternationalPhotographyFestival exhibition #WorldsandSpacing #世界与空间 by Chinese artist #Maleonn #马良 at the #EsplanadeSingapore underpass. #曽根崎心中 First full-length Japanese play that I’ve attended in a long time, thanks to an Okinawa friend for asking me along. The only times I caught any were probably when the late Noh master Yukio Ninagawa’s productions of Euripides’ Medea and Shakespeare’s Macbeth came to town. This is of a different scale and genre but enjoyable to watch nonetheless. Apparently, the original #LovesuicideatSonezaki has a long history - first written and staged by Japanese playwright #ChikamatsuMonzaemon #近松門左衛門 in 1703 as a traditional #Bunraku puppet theatre performance #人形浄瑠璃文楽 before this modern theatre version by playwright Kaneshita Tatsuo #鐘下辰男 (stage event project group – THE GAZIRA) came along in 1988. First encounter with Zappalà’s movement language #MoDem and it sure speaks louder than words. At times, the dancers’ twisted bodies reminded me of Rubens’ painting. At times, just infants at play. And their growls and prowls, a reminder of how violence between human beings is no different from that between beasts.
