Finally someone said it. Thank you.
Simon truly deserves the world, huh? And judging by the events in the S2 finale, Wilhelm would agree.
Speaking of the Wilmon, I think there’s more parallels with them as characters than people realize. One huge thing that stands out to me is that they’re both the “overlooked younger sibling,” which I think is part of why they are attracted to each other, even if they may not consciously realize it.
The Parentification of Simon Eriksson
Fair warning this is gonna be a sad post (it's my brand at this point lol), I'm sorry besties.
Parentification: the process of role reversal whereby a child or adolescent is obliged to act as parent to their own parent or sibling
The parentification of a child often occurs when the child's physical and/or emotional needs are not met because a parent has a physical or emotional impairment such as:
The parent has an alcohol or substance use disorder.
The parent or a sibling is disabled or has a serious medical condition
The parents are divorced or one parent has died.
The parents are immigrants and have difficulty integrating into society
These are not all of the ways parentification of a child occurs, but they are reasons why Simon's parentification happened. Micke abuses drugs and alcohol. Sara has ADHD and autism, and was bullied because of it. Linda got divorced from Micke (and not soon enough according to Sara). It's not confirmed that the Erikssons are immigrants, but they are Latinx living in a predominately white country, which is not easy. And from where we meet Simon in s1, it seems like he had to pick up the pieces of his family from all of these events and make them whole again.
There are two types of parentification: Instrumental and emotional.
Instrumental parentification happens when parents assign their child responsibilities that aren’t age appropriate. We can see this happen with Simon when he's the one finding ways to pay back his tutoring bill. Yes, Linda did question Simon how they were going to pay for it, but we never saw her act further in finding the money to pay Hillerska. We can also see this when Simon goes out to the store in e6 to buy milk, although Linda and Sara are home. An argument could be made that Simon insisted that he go out himself to get it, can't hide from the world forever, but I think that reasoning goes back to him feeling the need to be strong all the time.
Emotional parentification occurs when a child moves in to fulfill specific emotional needs of the parent. The child is expected to figure out the emotional needs of the parent, to respond to the need, and to provide support. I see this a lot in how Linda really leans on Simon to "deal with," for lack of a better word, Sara's attitude. I think this is most obvious in the big fight that Simon and Sara have in e6. It's Simon scolding Sara for her attitude and disrespect towards Linda, instead of Linda herself. And it's Simon who's consistently calling Sara out for the rude things she says. I do not remember a single time when Linda directly confronted Sara about her attitude and the way Sara speaks to her. My mom would never let me get away with talking to her in the way that Sara talks to Linda. It's like Simon is doing all of the scolding to somehow protect Linda from the hurtful things Sara says. Because he couldn't protect her from Micke (just theorizing)
There is also parent-focused parentification or sibling-focused parentification, meaning that a child becomes the primary caregiver for a sibling who is sick or disabled instead of acting like a caregiver to the parent(s).
I'd say that this is where we see parentification the most with Simon. He acts like Sara's older brother and protector, although he is the younger sibling. Yes, siblings should look out for one another, but I think the line between siblings and caregiver is blurry in this instance because of how Simon not only acts as her protector, but also as her critic or judge (for lack of a better word) with how he reprimands her.
Parentification can cause stress, anxiety, emotional detachment, disruptive behaviors and much more in a child.
I hope that in season 2 we see Linda step up as a parent, so that Simon has one thing less to worry about. As great of a mother as she is, always supporting her kids, physically being there for them, and taking cues from them, I think she can take on a more active role as a parent. I think she leans on Simon too much for certain things that she really should be dealing with instead of him.
I know we talk a lot about how Wille has the weight of the world on his shoulders in this fandom, and rightfully so baby's been through a lot, but I don't think we put enough focus on how much Simon has been through as well. They both carry the weight of their own worlds on their shoulders.

when the trailer for HL2VRAI first came out ppl were hoping for Mira to play alyx and while i dont really care who plays her, ive always wanted to animate something for the idea :)
Audio Source
ID UNDER CUT
BEGIN ID:
A black and white sketchy animatic.
Gordon looks down apologetically.
Gordon: "I-I dunno. I'll like, do something to make that up to y'all. Like, in real life-"
He looks up and smiles nervously.
Alyx shoves him. She has a bandana across her forehead, fingerless gloves, a short vest, and a ripped sleeveless hoodie. She grins deviously at him and pokes his chest.
Alyx: "Give me that flashlight! Drop it! Right now!"
She tries to yank the front panel off the HEV suit, shown through her vibrating rapidly as he fingers are curled under the plating. Benrey comes in from the left and puts a hand on Gordon's shoulder, staring at him. Benrey does not have a helmet and his shadow/hair covers half his head. He is wearing a jumpsuit and has a sparse mustache.
Benrey: "Yeah, give me everything you have.
Gordon bursts out laughing, causing Alyx and Benrey to fall back. Alyx grips the ladder next to them for balance. The camera zooms out to show they are in an alleyway with posters on the walls, the ladder, and a dumpster. Bubby is sitting on the dumpster.
Gordon puts his gun arm over his face like a facepalm and hands Benrey his crowbar.
Gordon: "Yes, sir!"
Gordon gives Alyx a pistol, which is shown through him 'holding' it out with his gun arm and a menu above them that shows his arsenal. He gives her the pistol, then a grenade.
Gordon: "Yes, sir!"
The grenade drops and explodes, resulting in an ear ringing sound effect. Bubby has his hands over his face and exclaims in pain. Coomer pokes his head out of the dumpster.
Gordon puts his head against the wall, bracing himself against it as Alyx laughs. Benrey is rubbing his eyes. There is an explosion mark between Alyx and Gordon, where the grenade dropped.
Cut to a little later. Alyx shoves Gordon to the ground.
Alyx: "Jump him! You got any change in your pockets?"
She looms over him then leans down, grinning and tauntingly cocking her head.
Alyx: "CHUMP? BITCH?"
An image of Pepe the Frog on the floor of a McDonalds, all his food spilled out pathetically with his eyes tearing up is shown- but edited so that it's wearing glasses and the HEV suit to resemble Gordon.
Gordon: "No-"
The Pepe image is gone, replaced with a drawing of Gordon on the ground, looking up as Alyx and Benrey's shadows come into view. His mouth is wobbly and he's got big wet pathetic eyes.
Alyx kicks Gordon while he lays down, Benrey smacks him with the crowbar. Laughing and hitting sound effects are heard.
The screen goes black for a second.
Alyx points forward, yelling with her hand on her hip.
Alyx: "HEY, GOON!"
It's shown that Alyx is speaking to Gordon, who has his arms dangling in front of him and looking up at Alyx wimpily. They are in a junkyard. Alyx jabs her thumb to the right.
Alyx: "Go find me some scrap!"
Gordon sulks off.
Gordon: "Yes, ma'am."
Alyx crosses her arms with a smug smile as Coomer laughs in the background.

I get the criticism of the Hunters of Artemis from a narrative perspective—it sucks that it essentially boots interesting female characters out of the story—but it always baffles me when people viciously hate Artemis for *checks notes* doing damage control.
Like. Thalia explicitly goes with Artemis to avoid the prophecy, and I definitely think that’s the reason Artemis tried so hard to get her to join—hell, you can view the hunters trying to recruit Annabeth as a way to get Thalia to join. And Bianca? You can’t convince me that Artemis didn’t guess there was something up there and react accordingly.
If Percy or Nico were even a little bit girl-adjacent you bet your ass she would be all over them to join. No one actually wants to risk the Great Prophecy happening, and Artemis is doing a hell of a lot more to stop it than anyone else.

soulmark au sketches. the idea of sokka in proven ‘soulmates are real’ universes consistently intrigues me—how would that impact his skepticism/interpretation of fate/destiny/free will? personally i think he’d be very angry for a very long time and probably not even understand why

I know that after Downfall the perspective of 'the gods are a FAMILY' has permeated fandom on both sides of the kill-all-gods argument, but frankly that isn't all they are and acting as if it's suddenly their only motivation flattens both them as characters and the narrative they (and bells hells) are in.
The Wildmother and The Raven Queen didn't 'let' Lolth get away with nabbing Opal and killing Cyrus because she’s their sister. Come on man, we've already seen that the primes are plenty capable of opposing and fighting their siblings on the side of mortals (is the calamity a joke to you??). I'm not saying the primes aren’t capable of picking the lives of their betrayer siblings over mortals (downfall showed as much) but that's not what the situation with Opal and Lolth was about in the slightest.
They let Lolth 'get away with it' not because she’s family, but because this is the very rare instance of them not only having the same goal, but of them actively fighting for their lives. As far as we know that has only happened once before on Exandria, and that time they also entered a truce to defend themselves. The vast majority of the time, the primes picking their siblings over mortals won’t happen because mortals can’t actually threaten the gods (normally), making the 'they're family argument' a moot point. The primes won’t necessarily agree with Lolth's methods, but they won’t go throwing away both hers and their own champions in a meaningless struggle when they need all their strength to stop the fucking apocalypse.

Excuse the format (I made this for instagram since that's what the publisher wants, rip) but this is basically a shorter, easy-to-read version of the history section at the back of my new book. (Part 1 || The book)
More about my relationship with queer history (& section 28) under the cut
Looking up history to make a fun queer historical rom-com opened my eyes to how my entire idea of the past in this country was way off.
It also made me realise that part of the reason queer history felt like such new, revelatory information was a law that banned it, which was still in place when I was at school.
Section 28 was put in place by Margaret Thatcher in the 80s, banning "promotion of homosexuality" in UK schools and local authorities. Local libraries were forbidden from stocking anything with LGBT content, and it effectively stopped teachers mentioning any queer history, leaving them scared to even accidentally mention a same-sex partner.
-
just want to add a quote from that article:
Tumblr media
legends.
-
Although the law was finally repealed in the 00s, it cast a long shadow. Older teachers were used to it, history books conformed to it, and new teachers still feared homophobic backlash.
Today there's a huge and disturbing rise in anti-trans rhetoric and legislation being attempted in schools and beyond, and it mirrors the homophobic conversations of the 80s. The truth that we've always been here gets met with vitriol - and to be honest, also just outright surprise even by well-intentioned, otherwise widely-read cis and straight people I know, especially in older generations.
I feel like there's also the flipside: once I listened to a podcast where two american women, older than me, were both SHOCKED that anyone was ever executed in Britain for being gay?? For me the threat of execution (before 1824), exile or imprisonment (the two years of hard labour that famously lead to the death of Oscar Wilde) were the main, only things I grew up aware of about queer history.
At best, the queer history I saw growing up was absolute tragedy. Part of what was such a revelation when researching was reading historical accounts that hint at hidden queer histories, secret joys and long, complex lives.
So by the time I finished researching my historical romance book, I'd decided to make an illustrated history section at the back too - these pics are a mini version.
I wish more people knew about the real history we have and how far back it goes - I hope someone unfamiliar might be able to get get a tiny introduction, and recs for ways to get a clearer view of our past.
