The post you just reblogged about infantilizing autistic characters and specifically Steven Grant is actually one of my favorite things ever and I wished people talked about it more. I remember watching MK when it first came out and seeing Steven and being like omg he’s just like me!! because a lot of the times I don’t really connect with autistic characters for one reason or another but seeing Steven and seeing him have the same mannerisms and characteristics as me was so so wonderful and the fandom was great at first and it seems like the more time passes and the farther we get from when the show stopped having new episodes, he gets characterized so differently than how he was in the show. Like yeah he was awkward and unsure around Layla but also look at the circumstances!! Everyone’s turned him into an uwu baby child and forget that he got angry and he was smart and he was brave and he was an adult man and not a child regardless of him being autistic. That respect you have for him he will have it be raised so high that when you look at him your eyes will shine as the first thoughts in your mind are how someone like him could even bother with you and once he has you in that mindset he'll begin to trick you into believing that the respect you hold for him is so much more than that.

I mean why else would someones eyes light up upon seeing someone, how your thoughts will slowly start to be filled with him at all times even for basic tasks and he will ensure that by the end of the month everyone else won't even be able to register in your mind besides him and the others.

Hi! Okay, this is a really, really stupid-ass question, but I see people doing it a lot and I'm actually curious, but I'm too embarrassed to come off anon (sorry, rip me). I saw your comment on OTNF and it started with like, "HELLOOOO??" and I wanted to ask: is that based on a meme? (Yes, I'm actually asking, I'm clueless and have no idea). Or is just some kinda nice internet verbiage that just osmosed into the greater internet over time? Or do you not really know where it started?

I swear this is a serious question.

Well, anon, somehow you have actually come to (somewhat) the right place, as I am a sociolinguist lmao. That said, I haven't ever researched or thought about this particular usage before (also my specialty is in Japanese and second language interaction, not English, though I do have a paper on "welp" used in face-to-face talk coming...), so a lot of this is going to be an informed guess. But anyway, I don't think this usage of hello came from a meme, and I don't actually think it originated on the internet either, though I think certain criteria for its usage are more likely to be met in online spaces, for reasons I'll get into below.

I don't know if you're a first or second+ speaker of English, but a very similar usage of hello can be found in face-to-face interaction as well. This is a made-up example so take that with a grain of salt, but I've definitely heard it used/used it myself this way before. Let's say you're in a situation where you think your opinion is obvious, but some other people (who are not privy to the current conversation) hold an opposing opinion. You might say something like: "Are you kidding me? Like, hello, her dress was amazing!" (In this case, everyone else would have been making fun of this imaginary woman's fashion choices.) As you might be able to infer, this usage of hello exploits its usual "greeting" meaning to give off the sense that a bunch of people are missing something so obvious that you need to bring their attention to it (i.e. you get their attention with a greeting, which demands a response).

So now if we look at my usage of "Hello???" we'll actually find the same principles at work. Here it's used as a marker of surprise. As in "Hello, is anyone else seeing this? Am I alone here?" Just as in the "like hello" example, it's used to rhetorically grab attention to something, in this case something that you've just seen/learned, and treats that something as something that others have not yet gotten on the same page with you about, or is otherwise so surprising it demands (or invites) a response from others so they can join you in your surprise.

Anyway, I think the reason you might be more likely to stumble upon this second usage of hello on the internet is because often when we make posts on social media, we are (1) not actually currently in a conversation, which makes attention grabbing that also serves as in invitation to talk somewhat more of a priority, and (2) often a lot of what we do in online spaces is react to news (in the general sense of knowledge new to us).

Boy oh boy was my timing impossibly bad returning to the country last night. Presidential election and time change combo was wicked crushing! But I did have a wonderful trip. Paris really really is great. Can only recommend. Im thrilled college games have started up because Im was missing hoops following the end of the W season! I hope I’m not being annoying but I just really need to rant about my hope that SJM puts feyre in a more prominent role in the next ACOTAR book. I thought her page time was a bit disappointing but not terrible in ACOSF (I mean, ideally I want her on every page. But seeing as that book was all Nesta Nesta Nesta and hardly any Cassian even…and with how bad a book it was, I’m fine with her staying away from whatever that was). But I was heartbroken over the fact she wasn’t in HOFAS at all!? After SJM teased her being there!? I mean, I get it wasn’t a big crossover and Nesta and Azriel were the highlights. But I can’t help but feel embarrassingly bitter that Nesta was highlighted so much in ACOWAR to the point it took away a bit from Feyre’s finale; Nesta was also the topic of conversation in ACOFAS and was at least a quarter of what Feyre-and other characters-were thinking about the whole book. Then the whole of ACOSF she had a terrible arc and her head is a nasty place to be, she was horrible to feyre the whole book and had that cheap ass lame ass “savior” moment at the end… I thought we could finally be free of her and see Elain shine, and get more Feyre. But then SJM put Nesta at the center of the crossover too?? And ended it by seemingly giving Nesta even more plot for her to do next ACOTAR book??? Ugh! I’m just so mad and I feel embarrassed complaining about my favs getting less page time and someone I hate getting too much spotlight but I’m just so mad. I really sincerely hope that while they were doing the crossover in HOFAS, Feyre, Elain, and maybe even Mor were doing other things that we will see in ACOTAR. And I hope feyre gets the respect she deserves. :/

You're not being annoying at all anon! Sorry for responding to this so late. I completely understand your frustrations. It was definitely annoying when I read bits of hofas and saw that despite SJM teasing a lot more acotar character content and acting like there would be more than there is there really wasn't much at all and everything we got was boring as shit. I feel like the way she presented this book and what we got were two very different things.

I definitely agree that the amount Nesta's character is being shoved down peoples throats is getting obnoxious at this point. She got her spin off book and her little story and I really don't think she needs more. Tbh though I wouldn't be too stressed about it since SJM in recent books can't follow through on a plot to save her own life. So many things brought up in CC1 and CC2 that either went absolutely nowhere or just were lightly touched on but didn't have the important it seemed like they would. So I honestly doubt the end of hofas is going to become as massive as we think it is, more likely than not the resolution to that is going to come from a pages long info dumping session where we find out the why but it doesn't actually get it's own plot and story... I mean that's basically how 90% of the mysteries established in the prior two CC books and a bit in ACOSF were handled in HOFAS. I honestly predict the same for the next acotar book lmao.

I also super desperately miss Feyre.. she's the main character and the heart of the acotar series and honestly such a comfort! I wouldn't worry too much though babe, I mean the crossover was basically worthless and just info dumping, I'm glad Feyre wasn't involved in that mess. I still think Elain's book is going to be next and I'm excited for that, Nesta will have a role and that's whatever ig but I'm not going to let a boring character whose book was bad ruin my enjoyment of Elain's book.

The main acotar series where Feyre was still our narrator and protagonist will always be the best in my eyes and these are just spin off books that let us see her sisters stories and they aren't gonna dampen my love for the main series. I'm actually doing a reread of the main series right now with the discord server and we're just raving about how much we adore Feyre and her pov. I love how plot filled these books are, every scene and page actually feels important and contributes to the overarching plot of the book and there are no massive scenes of unnecessary info dumping like certain.. other books.

Hello, extremely nervous to be saying this to be honest because I'm not exactly sure what kind of response I will receive because it seems like a silly thing to ask. As far as Cronus being a child predator, do you think that counts as something that is interpreted instead of something solid? When those things were happening I seriously thought they were just there for uncomfortable giggles. Mostly the Tavros thing and Eridan thing. The second one was as you described it and also very likely a "Desperate Amporas, they'll even date each other" thing so doesn't hold much merit I don't think? Even the Karkat thing can be portrayed as "He's really that desparate and weird" instead of "child predator" (in regards to trying to unlock the door), and I also remember some type of gag-thing where half the cast had ended up hitting on Karkat but if I'm remembering wrong, correct me. It's worth mentioning that my feelings toward Cronus have always managed to be on the more positive side (not including the ableism. I have experienced that type of abuse, it's a miracle I can feel "positive" about him at all), and I'm unsure if this has "clouded" my view or not and honestly makes asking you this feel even stranger so I'm assuring you right now that when I joke about being a Cronus apologist it stays as a joke lmao

I'll start off by saying that I really appreciate your politeness here!! Some people aren't willing to lend people any basic manners when put in a rough position regarding things they're fond of, be it directly or indirectly. While it's understandable from an emotional standpoint, it's just genuinely fucked up to take all of that out on people, and not a lot of people online seem to have the backbone to not make that impulsive anger a stranger's problem. Props to you, genuinely! I understand your nervousness, but you don't need to worry. I approach civility with civility, whether it's a topic I have strong feelings on or not. You will be fine. If I really didn't want to engage with this conversation, I would just delete your ask, and probably have not brought the topic up to begin with.

I touched on this topic a little while ago, but you can like whatever character you want as long as you are honest with yourself about what that character is. You're entitled to your own interpretations, and you're entitled to your own methods of interacting with any given piece of media. Just don't lie to yourself about the source- that's when some bad things start to happen. You can distance yourself from it. Just don't forget what you're working with. Cronus, by my own metrics, is technically one of my favorite characters. I like him as a character. I do not like him as a person. I'm putting this information on the table very clearly. I like to think my followers are aware of this, because I'd genuinely have no motivation to post about him if I didn't have some kind of genuine fascination with his character.

Look. I'm going to be very blunt with you. It's incredibly hard to brush off a character predating on children when it has happened three times, and every time it was made to be uncomfortable. It wasn't there as a random "cartoon logic" kind of joke. It's not a case where a character kills a man for comedy, with that having no bearing on their character. Cronus's rampant, unabashed flirtation is a major part of his character, and the inclusion of Karkat, Tavros, and Eridan was less an innocuous joke about that and more an indicator that children are not off the table when it comes to his standards. The Alpha Trolls are joke characters- all of the Trolls are, and yes your favorites count- and this includes Cronus. Why wouldn't it? But just because a character is a joke doesn't mean all of their actions are intended to be taken as innocent comedy. The joke with Cronus is that he's The Worst Character In Homestuck. Him creeping on those three kids- one of which he is related to- is an extension of the core concept of his character. It is intended to be creepy. It is intended to make you think "Wow, this guy has zero redeeming qualities". It wasn't a one-off occurrence, and it's completely awful. He's a predator. He wants nothing more than to have power over people he deems lesser or vulnerable. It's kind of his whole thing. You can still like him. I, for one, really enjoy talking about and writing him. But be honest with yourself about it! That's all. That kind of honesty will make you feel much better than denial, and it'll bring forth a whole new slew of inspiration regarding his character, if writing is your thing.

You'll be okay. Just don't be an apologist. That is the last thing you want to be. It gives you some really bad fucking brainrot- and not the good kind.
