Had the smallest amount of writing beans yesterday for my Buddie Fantasy AU .. which is a bit of a mess and all over the place (I don’t even have one chapter fully complete 🥴).

For context -> this is what happens from Bobby’s POV a little after this snippet. No idea if it’ll stay in the final cut (because that seems light years away), but thought I’d share anyway.

Bobby reaches for his sword, his hand slipping slightly along the hilt due to the blood covering his palm. If he’s going to die, he’s going to do it protecting his son. He’ll fight for Buck until his last breath.

Using his sword for support, Bobby slowly stands, the excruciating pain from his wound almost bringing him to his knees. He grits his teeth against it, shifting his feet into a better position readying for attack.

The small group of soldiers are closing in. He only has a few moments before they’ll be upon him.

Lifting his sword, Bobby takes a shuddering breath, ignoring the way the arrow pulls painfully in his side. Eddie and Buck should’ve made it deep into the forest by now. They’ll be safe. Eddie will keep him safe. He promised.

The first soldier approaches, weapon raised as he charges towards Bobby, but before he’s even within striking distance he falls to the ground, an arrow embedded in his chest.

Bobby whips his head to look behind him, a relieved laugh spilling from his lips, for charging in behind him is what looks to be a hunting party of fae warriors on horseback.

The fae gallop past him and towards the enemy soldiers who are now beginning to retreat in fear, but it is of no use, for the fae cut them down easily.

Bobby falls to his knees, exhaustion crashing into him like a rolling wave.

“Looks like we arrived in just the nick of time, Mage Robert of Nash”

Yes i’m perfectly fine, i’m just thinking about how in every Pokemon game where the rival character goes through a ton of hardships and pain, we are the ones that caused it. Somehow, it always goes back to us.

In the HGSS Celebi event it is shown that Giovanni abandoned Silver and went into hiding because Red/Leaf defeated him. (Essentially, we the player, ruined Giovanni and Silvers relationship all because we defeated Giovanni in FRLG.) “You told me… you were the number one in the world! Are you gonna quit? What are you going to do now? What aspect of you was number one? Gathering so many only to be defeated by a mere child! I don't understand you! You don't make any sense! I don't want to understand you! I will never become someone like you. A coward when you're alone and acting like a tyrant when you're in front of other cowards! I will become strong! I will become a stronger man all by myself! All by myself!”

In SWSH we indirectly cause Hop to go through so much turmoil and depression as we beat him time and time again. Each time we win, we ruin his confidence and his dream of beating Leon and becoming the new champion. And then in the end, we completely tarnish his dream as we defeat him, beat Leon, and become the champion. (Not saying Hop’s depression is entirely on us, as Bede bullies him till he starts to feel that way, but we helped a whole lot ruining his dreams and such.) “But he said that I was dragging Lee's good name through the mud, being so rubbish like I was... And I just can't get those words out of my head! If I'm weak, then people'll think Lee's weak, too... But I don't want that! I can't let Lee get dragged down!” “I want to help my brother, <player>! I've got to! But I can't even manage to beat you, so what sort of help could I ever be...?”

In SV we give the professor the book that helps them make a breakthrough with their research. In us doing that, we doomed them. We are basically the reason why Arven’s parent died, and why his Mabosstiff getting sick in the first place. “But the truth is, I would've rather just had a mom/dad who was there...even if she/he wasn't anything great. I haven't seen her/him for ages now. Unless you count seeing her/him in the news or whatever. Used to at least get emails sometimes. But even those stopped a couple years ago. And then she/he appears, out of the blue, and tells me we've gotta come to Area Zero? Tch. Some family, right?”

In the SV DLCs, everything we do ruins Kieran over and over again. We cause him to go through so much anguish and pain as we become the trainer for Ogerpon, and we defeat him in the Blueberry academy. Everything we do to him, even when we are trying to lessen the blow, (lying to him about seeing Ogerpon) just makes things worse for him. “The Loyal Three were the real bad guys, but the ogre's the one that gets treated like an outcast! And you two did the same thing to me! You treated ME like an outcast when you went an' met with the ogre! You're no different than those villagers back then... You know how much I love the ogre! You acted like you didn't know anything, but you were laughing at me behind my back all along! Liar! You're a LIAR!!!”

We are proud to formally introduce the Pokémon ScarVi Bridged Toxicity AU!! (huge thanks to @the-new-pokespe-futures for the name idea!!)

AU info under the cut! (Warning; its pretty long haha)

Background stuff first: Pecharunt uses they/it and can speak very limited English. We will be referring to the MC as Florian.

Pecharunt’s story is largely the same as in canon. They are a lonely pokemon who just wants to have a friend, but takes some less than moral approaches in doing so.

When Pecha first encountered the Loyal 3, they did not fully know what their Toxic Chains were capable of; they knew it granted power, but did not know about the controlling aspects of it. It was not until after they had chained the 3 against their wills and saw their reactions that Pecharunt realized what they could do. They prefer not to actively control people, and instead tend to leave them mostly alone or only passively influence them, unless necessary to defend themself or their chained. Pecha is not actively malicious in this AU, however, their actions still very much have a negative effect.

Many years later, after they go dormant in the wake of Ogerpon’s retaliation, Pecharunt is reawakened around the same time as the Loyal 3’s revivals. They wander Kitakami, and encounter Kieran after he runs from the confrontation with Florian where the Paldean catches Ogerpon.

The two talk and walk, and eventually it comes to Pecharunt offering Kieran a deal after hearing his situation. Pecharunt will give Kieran power in the form of a Toxic Chain, and in return Kieran will allow Pecharunt to remain with him and they will be “friends.” Kieran, in his desire for power to defeat Florian, eagerly accepts the deal and the chain.

Kieran’s willingness to become chained causes it to react much differently than it did with the 3 (who resisted its control). Rather than simply attaching itself to him, the chain became part of him; painfully burrowing under his skin and resting along his spine, with the end of it coming out like a tail of sorts. He can retract it, but it is very uncomfortable to do.

Over time, as Kieran embraces the chain’s effects, and him and Pecharunt grow closer, more and more physical changes develop, and they become more difficult and more uncomfortable to hide. Eventually, mental changes also develop, and Kieran sometimes finds himself feeling more Pokémon than human…

The main theme of the AU is a question: what is the border between human and nonhuman? What is the point at which someone is no longer considered to be “human?” Is it physical? Is it mental? Is it a mix? Or is it something else entirely? What does it mean to no longer be human and become something else? The AU’s name comes from Kieran being somewhere on that bridge between human and Pokémon; not truly on either side anymore.

It’s a complex idea that we have SO MANY thoughts about because of personal experiences, and a complex relationship with being “human.”

The ref sheet above is in the earlier stages of the AU, where Kieran’s physical changes haven’t become too drastic yet, and he is still mostly human. That will change though (still working on those designs)

The AU at the moment is mostly conceptual with little actual story. That may change, or it may not; story-writing isn’t exactly our strong suit. And some parts of the concept are still fluid (like Kieran and Pecharunt’s relationship being more genuinely friendly, or more toxic and deceptive).

Anyone who wants to write/draw something with the concept is free to, with credit of course! And questions are very much welcomed; we love talking about this!

We also have an ask/RP blog for the AU, @chained-champion, which follows a timeline where Kieran and Pecha are more genuine friends, and Kieran’s physical changes are still in the earlier stages, with minimal mental effects. That will change as the blog goes on though~

i am not sorry for the Carmine reblogs, she has fully taken over my brain at this point.

A mixture of her being so unhinged and neurodivergent that it feels like she was made for me to like her and her very unfortunate dynamic with her little brother make her a character that I was just made to get attached to.

I want to study her under a microscope and get her help with the Kieran stuff, I want to make things worse between the two siblings, I want them to blow up at each other in a way that will make them unable to reconcile, because she failed to do everything right for her brother, because he took everything so personally and lashed out, because the two just can't fit together nicely, they're just not made for that. no matter how hard she tries to be a perfect sister, no matter how much she cares about him, I want things to go so wrong between the two. I want the pain to be so gut-wrenching it tears them appart.

but I also want them to reconcile; in another world things could be saved. carmine could recognize the way she acts hurts her little brother that she loves so dearly, she could try to reach out to him and be better, and he could accept it and they'd be able to rebuild things together.

it's a tale of two siblings that struggle to coexist. Carmine's technically the one in the wrong because she hurts Kieran, but she doesn't intend to. she struggles to realise how he feels an just tries to do it her way because she's the older sibling and knows best. she loves him and wants only the best for him, that's why she made the player lie to him, but it backfired alomst immediately.

she failed and that's the real problem. now let's hope that the Indigo Disk lets them reconcile (in a satisfying way)

Thank you so much @invisiblemelonmoose!!! Hope you don't mind me answering your comment with a post, it's just a lot easier to format this way since I have quite a bit to say on the subject >:)c

So right off the bat, none of the kids have an actual connection to the legendaries---no special ✨chosen ones✨ or anything like that. It's more of a thematic thing for characterization purposes. To put it simply, each legendary has a specific word/trait I've associated with it for one reason or another, and so each character exhibits their respective trait in a way that they're supposed to grapple with throughout their game's storyline. Aka, an easy recipe for character growth!

Red -> Moltres (passion) Leaf -> Articuno (composure) Blue -> Zapdos (wit)

Since there's not really much lore for the Legendary Birds (at least not that I can find---there's a bit from the movies but I don't typically work with the animated stuff as source material), I had a very vague starting point, so I decided to go off their elements when selecting traits. Fire is often associated with burning, consuming passion---but Red isn't exactly the most animated guy in canon. Instead of being outwardly enthused, he has a much more mellow but no less intense love for pokemon. Big or small, tough or weak, he has a soft spot for them all. However, he also happens to have a talent for battling that Oak picks up on, for which he encouraged him (to a maddening degree) to pick up battling and eventually the Indigo League. Yet all the nagging and expectations---from nearly everyone around him, not just Oak---wears down on him, and it takes a forfeited match and an extended trip to the coldest, most isolated place in the region to recall that old flame... Blue takes after his grandfather in that he has a lightning-quick intelligence---not that Oak ever seems to be particularly impressed. In a family full of extraordinary people, Blue only ever seems to be extra ordinary. As a result, he goes out of his way to appear confident and cocky, though it's less about having an inferiority complex and more so just wanting to be noticed. He's even compared to Red constantly, who is objectively the better battler and who is the main reason Blue takes on the gym challenge himself. But on his journey, his self-assurance actually causes him to make dumb mistake after dumb mistake that culminates in the loss at the Indigo League. Then Red goes missing all of a sudden, and Blue's left to pick up the pieces of his ego while he and Leaf travel through the Sevii Islands. Out of the trio, Leaf is most definitely the most unfazed. It's not that she's particularly peaceful---watching one of Blue's and hers many arguments will instantly prove otherwise---but overall she's not nearly as passionate as Red or as outspoken as Blue. In fact, she can show an almost icy apathy at times. When Blue returns to Pallet Town without Red and without a Champion title, she's the one to suggest they head out to the Sevii Islands and take a break. But as the situation on the archipelago worsens, Blue digs them into deeper trouble with the remnants of Team Rocket, and they continue to hear nothing but radio silence from Red, Leaf's first instinct is to shove it all down like none of it particularly matters.

Lyra -> Lugia (empathy) Silver -> Ho-Oh (justice)

Ok, this one might need a little explaining since I kind of had to extrapolate here (Lugia's ocean/storm thing is way too close to Kyogre to just go with something water-related, and Ho-Oh is kinda just Moltres But Cooler in a way). In the Tower Duo's legend, the Brass Tower burned down in a rainstorm, during which Lugia tried to quell the fires with the wind. However, that put the rest of Ecruteak in danger, so Lugia had to stand aside and let it burn---its empathy led to its own downfall, so to say. Then Ho-Oh came along and revived the pokemon that had died in the tower (the Legendary Beasts), but fixing the injustice that happened to the Beasts caused the townsfolk to drive them away. Also, we're ignoring the whole blurb about trainers who can "touch the souls of pokemon" or have a "pure heart" bringing the Tower Duo back---I'm regarding that as a legend that's more so about people and pokemon as collectives regaining trust in one another (remember, trying to avoid chosen ones here). Anywaysss, moving on to Lyra and Silver! Lyra is a very empathic person, but she relates to pokemon far more than she does people. She's used to going along with anything and watching the world move on around her, so when she's faced with actual conflict, she struggles to go out of her way to help. Meanwhile, Silver has no problem calling out such infractions when he sees them, but he often fails to consider the fallout when trying to confront it---especially how it'll affect his own pokemon. Their arcs throughout HGSS involve learning from each other (as in their arcs are so intwined it's extremely difficult to discuss them separately) until by the end, Lyra becomes Champion and gains the power and motivation to help everyone, while Silver is... well, he's stuck reevaluating his entire worldview and goes through a teeny tiny itty bitty little existential crisis, but that's a story for another day (aka spoilers that I would like to cover in its own post). Originally, the plan was to pair the johtags to each Legendary Beast with Kris, Ethan, and Lyra relating to Raikou, Entei, and Suicune respectively. However, the fire/water/electric combo felt way too similar to the kantrio kids, and I couldn't really come up with anything original that felt like it would fit. I feel like I can justify it though considering both Kris's and Ethan's journeys have nothing to do with the plot of HGSS (Kris's takes place a few years before during GSC and Ethan's doing his own thing with Eusine during HGSS) sooo......

Brendan -> Groudon (structure?) May -> Kyogre (entropy?) Wally -> Rayquaza (ambition?)

I'll be completely honest here, I've barely fleshed out the Hoenn trio. like. at all. so I won't say much here for fear of writing something that I don't agree with later. But! I can say that while the kanjoh kids all start off with their defining traits, I want Brendan, May, and Wally to work up to theirs. Other than that, I'd have to do way more research into the characters and plotline to come up with a decent semi-faithful interpretation, so this is my formal apology to all the Hoenn fans reading this :( I'll get to it someday I promise!!!!

Dawn -> Mespirit (emotion) Lucas -> Azelf (willpower) Barry -> Uxie (knowledge)

Since I've saved the Creation Trio for PLA, the Sinnoh kids get the Lake Guardians! It's easy pickings, too, since they've already got characteristics practically built into them. I know the matchup here mighttt look off considering the character's in-game personalities, but hear me out on this: Dawn starts out on her pokemon journey purely to spite her mother and becomes Champion mostly because she can. If that's not emotional-led thinking, I don't know what is. She certainly doesn't act emotional half the time---she's level-headed, and clever enough to get herself out of all the trouble she causes---but there is very much a reason why she and Barry get along so well. In addition to that, she does hold a very firm belief that certain things should go certain ways and she will do just about everything to ensure they do. In that respect, she can come across as quite entitled, but it isn't inherently in a mean-spirited fashion. She just needs to figure out what's worth fighting for and what isn't. Lucas is much more stubborn than he typically lets on. He does come off as a little awkward and even bumbling at times, but he's also a trainer on par with Dawn and Barry. Considering he's a dedicated research assistant underneath Rowan and Dawn/Barry are full-time trainers, it'd take quite a bit of commitment to train his team enough to keep up. It takes quite a bit of convincing to get him to back down from something once he's set on it. If something's false, he has to correct it (it's not about him being right, it's about getting the facts straight), and if he doesn't agree with a rule, he'll simply ignore it (why should a rule exist if it's stupid anyways?) Though it can be inconvenient at times, it's exactly this attitude that allows him to survive getting blasted back to ancient Hisui. Also a fun fact: Lucas is the only protag to officially have two legendary associations, as his character correlates to Azelf and Dialga in DPPt and PLA respectively (Akari gets Palkia, and you'll never guess who Giratina is left to... >_> ). Barry loves to learn, he just can't focus for the life of him. He's constantly the first to know and the first on the scene, he always uses his losses as a chance to reflect and improve his team, and he even goes out of his way to memorize all he can at the Trainers' School in Jubilife. That's not to say he especially cares about learning subjects outside of his interests, but he absolutely does get sucked deep into whatever catches his eye. Especially after Lucas's disappearance, he devotes all his free time to research just so he can figure out what happened to his friend---and just possibly, with some help, he manages to catch a lead...
