Thinking about how in the midst of the hostility currently directed at Amethio in-universe, Friede still remains the only one so far who expressed joy at his presence..

#that's his rival!!#i wonder if amethio notices the hostility or even cares about it #i guess he doesn't because he is just focused on trying to do what he can for gibeon #still it's a bit sad :/#being considered as getting in the way or a nuisance etc.#he has subordinates but it's still more of a professional relationship #a sense of distance there...#zir and conia are always glad he is safe of course but the hierarchical nature of that dynamics still stands in the way etc #that's why it stands out to me that friede got to express open joy and excitement at a few different points #about amethio being there at all (like in ep 45)#and being the only one so far too #(liko is still wary of him for good reason)#friede was so happy he found a rival on his level :(#it's cute when he gets to show these sides of his character...#i wonder if amethio saw a bit of spinel in friede in the first chapter?#we know spinel taunts amethio when he gets an opportunity to do so #and friede had this slightly teasing side too (but no ill will)#since i got the impression that amethio was projecting a lot of things onto friede at the beginning #(which was funny)#(the way he took things in the worst possible way etc)#anyway!#i really like their rivalry tbh #it's genuinely so compelling #for what it brings them both as characters #and how it relates to wider themes etc #character notes #episode notes #hz064

Lifechanging moment this year is when Amethio showed up and revealed he had mastered Terastal and proceeded to imitate Friede's pose specifically while using it.

#looking back on the year of horizons etc. retrospective #anyway that was great and he did the same thing again in ep 64 against liko so #like yeah we'll establish that hamber is the one who trained amethio in ep 34 and presumably taught him everything he knows in battles #and hamber encouraging amethio in his pursuit for strength by bringing up gibeon #yet the moment amethio branches out and seeks strength in his own way and carve his own path #there is a Very Specific person he is imitating. huh.#not the one who (possibly) trained him all his life and who gave him his tera orb #but someone else entirely. that person being friede.#anyway that was something. deeply meaningful #when the preview for ep 45 dropped i remember being like 'hey it sure looks like amethio has the same pose as friede'#'is that where they are going with it' and they did just that.#they really could have made something unique to amethio but they made this intentional choice (re: same pose)#to convey something very specific about his character and to land a point.#makes me insane the layers this has to it in terms of characterization. More promotional stuff for HZ086 (key frames, gif, another gif).

#the key frames mentioning that both of them are going all out in the battle.. much to think about #i feel like spinel was toying with friede a bit more the previous times they battled.. now it's going to be serious #and spinel is going all out as well! he is going to be fully serious about this and he can't risk messing around #also that gif with blacky and cap.. cap on top of blacky. cat and mouse kind of game. absolutely insane choice #i was literally thinking yesterday that spinel was battling in a way that would avoid blacky actually getting touched #and now.. friede actually gets that close to spinel's main partner pkmn. it's different from before!#also.. nice contrast with friede and amethio's team up in hz045 (same writer as hz086 too)#back then. soublades got on lizardon and it was a proof of trust and respect between the two #friede offered this opportunity to amethio and he fully trusted him not to betray him #cap getting on blacky though.. completely different context. different motives. even though the visual is reminiscent of ep 45 #i like the way these two dynamics contrast each other.. and how i constantly get new things to think about. big love #really wonder what spinel's reaction will be to cap getting on blacky like that w #also that last gif. spinel being more agressive than usual.. less composed than he usually is. good stuff #i really look forward to seeing how friede gets under his skin.. he has a tendancy to do that very casually #hz086 #episode notes
