Eyy my mother’s family and my father’s family were directly involved in the opposite sides of the Pacific War. My maternal grandfather’s older brother was conscripted by the IJA, and he died somewhere in Indonesia; my paternal grandfather was a KMT veteran of the Second Sino-Japanese War and the Chinese Civil War, after WW2 he fixed tanks for the US army during Vietnam War.

Chapter 1- The Arrangement
Arranged For Love (Carlos Sainz Jr x Reader)
Series Masterlist
Summary- Everything seemed to be going well for Y/N until it doesn't. Will this life altering event bring her closer to her family. Will this life altering event introduce her to Carlos?
The reader is Y/N, other than that everyone has a name
Y/N was majoring in Business; just like her grandma, Anika Baker had wanted. "You're smart, you're rational and the best of all you're kind" she would tell her grand daughter growing up. That's why she was currently studying to maybe take over her family business when she grew up.
She grew up in a matriarchy, where after the untimely death of her grandfather; her grandmother took the lead and brought the company to where it is now. Eventually, she did step back and let her son, Ivan and daughter-in-law, Rose Aguirre handle it. That was when Y/N was born. The first born of their family, she was so pampered; she got whatever she wanted. She had her dad wrapped around her little pudgy finger.
So, when her parents were away, their grandmother raised her and her siblings. She fed them, helped them with their homework and best of all, told them stories of kings and dragons. Y/N would sit intently while her grandmother would massage her feet after a tiring day at school or give her a head massage when it ached. Y/N would always love spending time with her, one way or another.
Y/N was off too college as soon as she turned 18. She finally got to be back home after 2 years for longer than a few weeks; the reason wasn't something to be happy about since a virus had spread across the world and was killing people at an alarming rate. Which meant school, colleges, offices had all shut down and were working from home. When she hugged her grandma for the first time in 6 months; "You've gotten thinner since the last time I saw you" she squinted her eyes at her grandma. "You know how it is with age, I don't have the appetite anymore" her grandmother reasoned. "Well, you should still eat. I'm gonna make sure you gain weight before I leave" Y/N said determined. "Sure, sweetheart" she laughed. "Let's have food. It's nice to have everyone back home, together for once" she emphasised. Y/N held her grandmother's hand as they walked to the dining table for lunch.
A month or so after she was back, her grandmother had started feeling ill. She wouldn't be able to hold down any food and she had been complaining of a stomach ache. With COVID restrictions, getting an appointment was extremely difficult. After a week or so, thankfully, her dad was now at the doctor's office with his mother. The kids were at home, dotting it down to the regular stomach flu which was taking longer than usual to clear.
What came as a surprise to the family, after a couple tests was that, the matriarch of the house was suffering from stomach cancer. Couple more tests later, and it said that it had advanced quite a bit having spread all over the body. The doctors weren't sure what they could do other than ease her pain. Everyone was crying in their rooms while trying to hold a tough facade in front of Anika, so as to not worry her.
At breakfast, a few days after the diagnosis. "You lot are all cry babies. It's just cancer. I'll get the treatment and be well" Anika smiled. Everyone hoped what she was saying was true. But as the treatments started; things started to get worse for her. The medicines were taking a toll on her. Their once active grandmother was reduced to bathroom runs and staying put in her bed. She barely had the energy to eat on her own.
The matriarch's children were sad and couldn't help but cry since they couldn't do much for their mother other than watch. The grandkids would think of ways to make food exciting for their grandmother. The whole family had come together. They were all living together to care for their ailing mother. "I like this very much" Anika told Y/N. "What do you like, grandma?" she asked. "Having all my children here, fretting over me" she said looking at her 2 children fondly. Y/N smiled, "They always fret over you, for as long as I can remember" she replied. "Hmm...but this feel different...it feels nice" she hummed.
They had a scare a few months later; Anika's health had deteriorated suddenly and needed hospitalisation. When she was admitted in the hospital; everyone went to visit her in turns. "I wish I got to see at least one of my grandkids get married" she said barely above a whisper. She beckoned Y/N forward, "Darling, you're the oldest. You're the smartest. You always listen to your grandma don't you" she cooed. "Grandma, I don't like where this is going." she mumbled. "I know it is too much to ask for but why don't you get married. I'll find you a nice man" she reasoned. "Grandma, no. I'm only 20. I'm not getting married, not yet anyways." she whined. "ugh! I love you grandma, I really do but I don't have any plans of getting married, yet" she said pulling away from her grandma. "I'm going home. I hope you get well soon" she stormed off.
Y/N was fuming, she got that her grandma was sick and wanted to see major milestones in her grandkids lives and she wanted to share her happiness with her too but that doesn't mean she will throw her own granddaughter under the bus. She hated the fact that it was always her who would have to do as the elders told her to. Why couldn't it be her siblings or her cousins for once? Why did she have to get a married now? She has so much she wants to achieve, she can't be tied down just yet. People her age barely even remembered the name of the person they last slept with and she should get married; her grandma had gone crazy, she thought.
While Y/N was losing her mind because her grandma wanted her married; Carlos Sainz Junior was losing his mind since he got a contract with Ferrari next year.
In the world of Formula One, there was a change in tide. Sebastian Vettel would no longer be driving for Ferrari in the upcoming season; instead he was being replaced with an up and coming driving Carlos Sainz who was currently driving for McLaren. COVID had put a damper on things; but nothing could contain Carlos's excitement. He would be driving in red next year, something almost every driver had dreamt of when they dreamt of Formula One.
Carlos was your typical Formula One driver, he asked his father for guidance since he was a Rally Champion and looked up to some great drivers as inspiration. He had big plans; plan of winning his first race, plans of winning a championship title, plans of racing until he was 60 but none of those plans involved getting married any time soon. He couldn't imagine himself settling down, just yet even though his sister was planning on getting married herself. He had a long way to go; the biggest obstacle, he wasn't dating anyone as of yet so obviously marriage was off the table for the foreseeable future.
Now, there's a saying, sickness brings the lost together. That's exactly what had happened. Carlos senior had grown up with a family, albeit only for a few years of his childhood but those were formative years and he had spent a lot of his time with the Kastner family. They were his neighbours and even after they had moved away, they had still stayed in touch. He wouldn't forget their kindness and hospitality. For the few years that they were around he was incharge of making sure the oldest of the Kastner family, Ivan got to and back from school safely.
When Carlos senior found out about the ailing health of Mrs Kastner who would make him delicious food and baby sat them when necessary, he flew in as soon as he could with his family in tow. COVID didn't make it easy to visit the sick but Carlos senior would be damned if he didn't meet or introduce his kids to the woman he talked about. Carlos senior greeted Ivan, "You've aged" he laughed patting his back. "As if you haven't" he clapped back. The two happy to see each other after a very long time apart. "I heard Aunt Anika is sick" Carlos senior spoke. "News travels fast" Ivan chuckled. "Not fast enough since she's been sick for a while and I only found out after she was admitted" Carlos senior pointed out. "Yes, yes, she'll be discharged soon. She's been doing so much better for the past few days" Ivan explained. "That's good to know" Carlos senior sighed. "Can we meet her?" he asked hopeful. "I think she'll be over the moon when she find out you've come. She kept up with all your races" Ivan added. "I'm glad she did. I think it was the combined prayers of my mother and yours that I'm still alive after being this reckless" Carlos senior laughed. "That I will not disagree with" Ivan smiled opening the door to the hospital room where Anika was reading the day's paper. She placed the paper down to see who it was and a smile broke out on her face; "Carlos, darling, how've been? I've missed you" she spoke trying to get up but Carlos senior was already by her side, "Don't get up. I'm right here" he leaned down and hugged her. "I've missed you too." he whispered. She patted his back, "I see you've done well for yourself" she said scanning the faces of the 4 people behind him. He pulled away and introduced his wife and 3 kids to her. "Did he get into rallying just like his father?" she asked shaking Carlos junior's hand. "Worse, he's in Formula One" Carlos senior smiled. "Darling, stay safe. I might have to start praying for one more now" she shook her head. "This is the woman who was best friend's with your grandmother and they love each other too much" Carlos senior announced to his kids. "What team does he race for?" Anika asked Carlos senior drawing his attention. "I'm racing for McLaren now, but I'll be racing for Ferrari next year" Carlos junior replied. "congratulations dear. And Carlos, a bit narcissistic I think to name your kid after you" she laughed.
The atmosphere was lively and bright, everyone was busy catching up with each other and trying to let each other know what was going on with the other.
In all of this, the gears in Anika's head were spinning. If Carlos's son, Carlos was single he would be the right fit for her grand daughter. She had always adored and dotted on Carlos senior growing up, so it would only make sense that she would want a good family to take care of her grand daughter. If there's anything to go by how Carlos senior turned out, Carlos junior would fit right in with their family. She felt giddy thinking about the possibility of merging their two families. She knew if everything went well, they could easily be getting married at the end of the year or the beginning of the next. She just wanted what was good for her grand daughter, having something nice come out of it like a handsome and rich husband was a bonus.
The Sainz would be staying in town for a few days before they would be leaving. Anika had invited them over for dinner once she would be discharged since she couldn't send them away without feeding them herself. It was a day before her discharge and she was sat with both Ivan and Carlos. "Since the two of you are here, there's a proposition I would like to make" she said. The two men sat up straight waiting for Anika to continue. "I might not live long" she began but was cut off by mutual 'nos and you'll live a long life' before she shushed them. "Let's listen to the doctors and I know they are trying their best but we have to be realistic too. If I do live long, I'll get to watch the happiness unfold if don't then I'll at least be a part of some of it." she explained. The two men were very confused with where she was trying to go. "I want to make a proposition like I said, I think it would be great if Carlos's son, Carlos married Ivan's daughter, Y/N. I've always wanted to watch my grand kids get married, this way I can die happy" she finished. Their mouths opened and closed a few times before Carlos spoke, "Aren't they still too young?" he asked. "It's just a suggestion, it's up to you two and them to decided if they'll go through with it. Would I be happy if they got married? Obviously but at the end of the day it'll all up to the kids. I just want what's best for them" Anika said. The two men were thinking. They were stuck. "You two can think about it, maybe we can introduce them to each other at the dinner tomorrow" Anika said hopeful. This was going to be difficult conversation to have for both Carlos and Ivan, they thought.

Late August, 1996.
July had come and gone so quickly, and you could sense it in the muggy air as the daylight dwindled away on the horizon of an orange colored sky. Your heels click along the parking lot pavement as you make your way into the dingy bar. Everyone told you that your twenties would be full of surprises, but no one warned you that those twists and turns would land you in Hawkins, Indiana.
The neon sign reads The Hideout; well, really, it reads Th H deo t, and the “o” is starting to flicker. You’re not the only one who notices the building’s crumbling exterior.
“Huh,” Jess says, crossing her arms over her chest. “This place seemed a lot cooler when I was in high school.” Still, she pushes open the door, where you’re immediately hit with the stench of cigarettes and beer. The floor is sticky with what you can only hope is spilled liquor, and you take a seat on a rickety barstool.
“How did you even hear about this place?” you ask your new friend, tugging your dress so it covers a bit more of your thighs. You had one night out to yourself, and Jess was insistent on you making the most of it.
“Used to come here all the time when I was, like, sixteen?” She wrinkles her nose. “They’re dirt cheap and they never card, so my friends and I used to get super wasted. Thought we were hot shit.” She flags down the bartender with a wave and a smile. “Anyway, you can’t live in Hawkins and not come to the Hideout at least once. It’s a tradition.”
The bartender, a woman who looks to be in her mid-forties, leans on the counter. “What can I get you ladies?” she asks. Her voice is raspy from what sounds like decades of chain smoking.
You’re about to order a Bud Light, but Jess cuts you off. “We’ll each have a Hideout Special,” she says confidently. “Make hers a double.”
“Jesus Christ, are you trying to kill me? And what the hell is a Hideout Special?”
She waves off your concern. “Honestly, I have no idea. But it’ll get you buzzed fast.”
You reluctantly agree, sipping on something that tastes vaguely like a mixture of rum and vodka, with the pungency of rubbing alcohol. “That’s awful,” you grimace, and Jess just laughs.
“Yeah, they’re pretty rough going down. But you only have one night to yourself, and you’re gonna make the most of it.” She links her arm through yours, using her free hand to tilt the drink back up to your lips. “Now, drink up. The band’s gonna start playing soon, and you’ll need all the liquor you can get. Trust me.”
Corroded Coffin, the band in question, is warming up in the back room. Tuesday nights has been their slot since high school, and if their lead singer and guitarist has his way, it’ll be their slot until they’re too old to play. He’s tuning his ax, tongue poking out of his mouth in concentration, only looking up when he hears a faint “oh, shit,” come from his bandmate.
“Y’good?” Eddie asks, strumming gently to play a perfect A-chord.
“Yeah,” Jeff says, holding up a small black box. “Forgot I had this in my pocket; almost dropped it when I took off my jacket.”
Eddie rolls his eyes. “That’s what you get for wearing leather in fuckin’ August, dude.” He squints at the object in Jeff’s hand. “What is that, anyway?”
“A ring,” Jeff proudly announces. “I’m gonna ask Viv to marry me.” The big, goofy grin on his face makes Eddie’s stomach churn. He looks at Gareth and Danny, expecting similar disgusted reactions from them, but they’re both smiling, too.
“Way to go, man!” Danny says, and Gareth claps Jeff on the back. “Our little Jeff is growing up.”
“Oh, fuck off, man,” Jeff says, but he’s laughing as he accepts the congratulations. He glances expectantly at Eddie, waiting for him to chime in.
“You two’ve been together for a million years,” Gareth jokes, twirling a drumstick in his free hand. “What made you decide to take the plunge?”
Jeff’s eyes dart around the room. “Okay, I wasn’t supposed to say anything,” he starts, voice hushed, “but Viv’s pregnant!”
“Holy shit!” Danny sputters. “Dude, you’re gonna be a dad!”
“Yeah,” Jeff agrees incredulously. “Fuckin’ wild, isn’t it?” His gaze falls to Eddie. “Does the seasoned professional have any words of wisdom?”
An uncharacteristic silence fills the room. Eddie can feel their eyes burning a hole into his head. He knows what he should say, what Jeff wants to hear, but he can’t bring himself to feign happiness. “You don’t have to marry someone just because you knocked her up.” It comes out with a snarl, meaner than he’d intended.
“Crazy thought, but have you considered that I actually want to marry her?” Jeff shoots back, crossing his arms over his chest. “We’re not all content being miserable hermits like you are.”
“Whoa, break it up,” Gareth tries, stepping between the two guitarists, but the conversation’s already too heated.
“I’m not miserable, and I’m not a hermit,” Eddie counters. “I’m just not about to limit myself when there’s plenty of pussy in the sea.”
Jeff rolls his eyes. “Whatever, dude. Thanks for the well wishes.” Eddie can’t help but notice the flash of hurt in his eyes as he walks away. A small part of him feels bad, but he can’t shake the anxiety that unexpected change seems to bring.
“So, what does this mean for Corroded Coffin?” he asks. “Should we consider this our farewell show?” He tries to ignore the irritated glares he’s getting from Gareth and Danny. It’s like the words fall from his mouth before his brain can process the damage they can do.
“Obviously, once the baby comes, I’ll have to take a step back,” Jeff shrugs. “And I’m gonna try to work some overtime before it’s born. Save some extra money, y’know.”
The room had been zapped of joy, and Eddie feeds off of the sullen atmosphere. “Nice commitment to the band,” he sneers. “Glad to see how easily your priorities change.”
“Yeah, man, you should try it sometime,” Jeff snaps. His fists clench, and he looks angry enough to throw a punch. “Maybe you’ll stop acting like an overgrown teenager.”
Eddie’s about to fight back, jaw locked in place and eyes seeing red, but he’s temporarily grounded by the sound of the manager’s tired voice echoing from the ancient sound system.
“Put your hands together for Corroded Coffin!” A smattering of applause signals their cue to enter. Eddie tries to shake off the conflict; it can be resolved after they play. The show must go on, or whatever it was that his high school drama teacher always said.
A balding man with a gruff voice introduces the band as Corroded Coffin. Jess’s eyes go wide; she’s already a few Hideout Specials deep and definitely feeling it.
“Oh, shit!” she laughs with a hiccup. “That’s my sister’s boyfriend’s band!” She motions to the bartender to pour her another drink, but you shake your head and just mouth water. The bartender gives you a knowing nod, probably grateful that she won’t have to be the one dealing with Jess tonight.
“Yeah, that’s Jeff!” Jess continues, pointing at a tall guitarist with tight curls. “He’s the one who knocked up Viv!” She cackles like she just made the most hilarious joke. “I totally forgot they were playing tonight.” She frantically waves at him, and he gives a small head nod in acknowledgment.
Your eyes are drawn to someone else: the lanky, ring-clad man who takes center stage. He grips the mic with black polished nails, smirking out into the crowd as he yells, “Hawkins, how’re we doin’ tonight?” The loudest cheers come from Jess, and you join in, letting out an obnoxious “woooooo!” in response.
The noise draws his attention, and you watch as his smirk shifts to something needier, hungrier, even. His big brown eyes land on you and Jess, leaving you momentarily breathless. He’s absolutely gorgeous, light stubble on his cheeks and above his plush lips. He’s wearing a white V-neck that shows off a dusting of chest hair. His torn black jeans hang low on his hips, accentuated with a studded belt. A gleaming pair of silver handcuffs are clipped to one of the loops.
“All right!” he calls back. “Well, this first one goes out to the pretty girl in the blue dress at the bar. Wait for me after the show, Sweetheart.” He counts out to four, and they launch into a cover of Def Leppard’s Pour Some Sugar on Me.
It doesn’t even register until Jess nudges you, more forcefully than necessary, and says, “Hey, you’re wearing a blue dress!”
Oh.
Oh.
“Who…who is he?” you ask, feeling a warmth spread through your core that you’re sure isn’t from the alcohol.
“That,” Jess says, leaning on you for balance, “is Eddie Munson. Total freak back in high school, but now he’s just got a reputation for being a freak in the sheets.” She throws you a clumsy wink and adds, “looks like you’ll get to find out for yourself tonight.”
“I’m not really a one-night stand kind of person,” you counter, internally cringing at the memories of your feeble attempts at hooking up, all of which inevitably ended with you pining after them pathetically.
Jess rolls her eyes. “Come on,” she whines, taking note of the way you and Eddie can’t seem to tear your gazes from each other. “Your dad leaves tomorrow, and then you’ll be spending your nights taking care of your grandma. You gotta live a little!”
Plopping back down onto the barstool, you consider her sentiment. It’s true; once your dad goes back home, you’ll be the one helping out in the evenings. And the new school year starts next week, leaving you with little time for yourself.
Your whole life has been spent helping others. You became a teacher to shape young minds and provide them with a safe place to learn and express themselves. You moved to a tiny town in the middle of Indiana to look after your grandma. Even now, you’re babysitting Jess and ensuring she doesn’t dehydrate instead of letting loose and ordering another drink.
“Fine, but only if he brings it up,” you concede. “I’m not gonna be the one to make the first move.”
The band moves on to their next song; it’s either an original or one you’re not familiar with, but you find yourself dancing to the beat. Jess joins you, writhing her body in some kind of drunken jig that has you cackling. You’re having such a great time that you don’t even notice Eddie tripping over a few chords as he watches you sway your hips back and forth.
Corroded Coffin plays for another forty minutes. You recognize some Metallica and Black Sabbath songs, headbanging along until you’re dizzy. The bartender slides you another drink—on the house, she insists—and you sip it eagerly, trying to quell your nerves. Eddie shouts out, “thank you, Hawkins!” and disappears backstage with the rest of the band.
You can’t ignore the dejected pain in your heart, but you muster up a smile and turn to Jess. “Ready to get out of here?”
She shakes her head, putting her palm on the bar to steady herself. “You still have to wait for Eddie,” she teases. “You promised.”
You cock your eyebrow in amusement. “First of all, Drunky McWasted, I didn’t promise anything,” you say, “and second, show’s over and, uh, he’s not here.” You swivel around for emphasis.
“Give him a fucking second, would ya?” The comment doesn’t come from your friend, and you turn around to see Eddie standing behind you. He’s got a towel around the back of his neck, mopping up the sweat from his performance. His hair is pulled back into a low ponytail, and you can see the remnants of kohl eyeliner smudged around his lash line. “Had to clean myself up a little bit, damn.” He smiles, and you feel like you’re going to melt.
Jess interrupts, pushing you closer to him. “Eddie, this is my neighbor.” When you still don’t say anything, too awestruck to introduce yourself, she tells him your name.
Eddie nods, letting his fingers graze yours. “What’d you think of the set?” He grins at the bartender, who gives a small head bob and hands him a whiskey, neat.
“It was good,” you manage, finally finding your voice. “I especially liked the song you dedicated to the pretty girl in the blue dress.” There. You flirted. The rest is up to him.
“Yeah?” He rests his forearm on the bar and leans over to take his glass. “Was kinda hopin’ you would. Soon as I saw you, I knew I had to shoot my shot.” His eyes flit over the low-cut neckline of your dress before he drags his gaze back to your eyes. “You new to Hawkins?”
“Mhm,” you say, watching as he fumbles with a pack of Newports. “I moved here to take care of my grandma.” Good going. Nothing turns a guy on like talking about your elderly relatives.
But Eddie’s unfazed. “Hot and nice? A lethal combo, if I do say so myself.”
“What about you?” you blurt out. “I mean, have you always lived in Hawkins?”
He shrugs. “Been back and forth. Came here when I was nine, left when I was twenty-two, then came back about four years ago.”
“What brought you back? Missed all the excitement?” You laugh and he gives a small smile, but an emotion you can’t pinpoint crosses over his face.
“Somethin’ like that,” Eddie mutters, popping a cigarette between his lips. “Wanna go outside an’ have a smoke with me?”
“I’d love to,” you say with an apologetic tone, “but I really don’t wanna leave her alone.” You motion to your friend, who is currently trying to convince the bartender to let her have another drink. But as soon as she hears you using her as an excuse, she waves you off.
“Go,” she insists. “I’ll be fine. ‘M gonna have Jeff take me back home.” She stands on her tiptoes, nearly falling over, flailing both her arms wildly when she spots Jeff in the crowd and shouting, “Jeffy! Jeffy, can you drive me home so these two can have sex?”
You feel your face heat up at her words as Eddie shakes his head incredulously, lips twisting into a cocky grin. The last thing Jeff wants to do after Eddie’s earlier tantrum is help him get laid, but he knows there will be hell to pay if he doesn’t watch after his inebriated sister-in-law-to-be.
“Yeah, sure,” he grumbles, carefully looping his arm around her waist and helps her to his car. He appears to deliberately avoid making eye contact with Eddie, though you don’t know why. “Exactly what Jeff said you’d pull,” you bite back. “Two PM, Mr. Munson.” You walk towards your students to begin circle time, leaving Eddie dumbfounded.

You huff out a sigh. “Fine,” you concede, and Will slips into the chair next to Harris.
Eddie closes the door behind him. “Listen,” he begins, twisting his rings around his fingers, ”about the other night…” He trails off, and for a split second, you think he might offer a genuine apology. “I just don’t want this to affect how you treat Harris.”
You bark out an incredulous laugh. “You really think I treat my students any differently based on whether or not I like their parents?” Crossing your arms, you turn back towards the door, throwing out a pointed, “I think it’s best if you leave now.”
Eddie’s voice draws you back into the conversation. “I’ve never had this problem before,” he snorts.

Hey, btw, if you're 40 and your parents are still in your life, you should spend some time figuring out how much personal caregiving you want to do for them.
My grandma took care of my great-grandparents, a great aunt, and two ailing husbands. She wants to go into a nursing home if she is ever unable to live on her own.
My mom wants to care for her even though grandma specifically does not want her to do that because grandma's lived it and doesn't want to put that work on anyone.
Nothing but respect for grandma. She chose to take on a full-time caretaking role several times. That's a fucking lot. I don't want to do that.
My mom, on the other hand, really wants one of the kids to take care of her. And, by extension, Dad. But. No. God no. Not for anything. Dad starts doctor visits by announcing he doesn't like being told what to do, and Mom literally ignored increasing hip pain for several decades while her hip joint went through bone death.
Mom also thinks my aunt asking for help in caregiving my grandmother when her eye sight started getting bad was my aunt being selfish. Which tells me a lot about how much of my time she expects to have (all of it).
No fucking way am I taking responsibility for these people in their golden years. I will vet caregivers and discuss housing options and provide support if there's serious medical shit.
For fuck's sake, Dad's got COPD and still smokes.
Anyway, like I said, if you're 40-ish, it's something you gotta consider. So, just consider it. It's one of those adulthood things that I think people forget until something big happens, and then you're making decisions while stressed and likely fearful, and that's not good for long-term plans.

The Gut-Wrenching Experience of Watching "How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies"
The movie How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies is a 2024 Thai comedy-drama directed by Pat Boonnitipat. The story is centered around a young man who one day decides to move into his ailing grandmother’s home to help around and act as a caretaker for her, hoping to secure her fortune before she passes. However, he soon realizes that his goals are going to be more difficult to achieve as he attempts to navigate through his family’s dynamics and win his grandmother’s favor. The tension between the commitment to family and the internal resistance was so real, and it pulled me into the story, making me feel a sense of connection to the characters' struggles.
Watching How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies made me go through such a whirlwind of emotions, ranging from frustration to heartbreak. The story began with a family visiting their ancestors’ graves. As the movie unfolded, I found the main character, M, quite infuriating because of his behavior towards his grandmother, Sew. He did what he was tasked with lousily, sat down, and proceeded to ignore his family’s reprimands, making his grandmother Sew do the work for him. I couldn’t understand how someone could be so detached from the obvious care their grandmother needed. It was infuriating to watch him ignore his responsibility, and it reminded me of times when I’ve seen people disregard their own family members, letting selfishness take over.
When grandmother Sew fell and ended up in the hospital, I was furious with not only M for refusing to get involved but also with the rest of the family—M’s uncles in particular—for leaving the hospital early. It was then revealed that Sew had cancer. The family agreed to shield her from knowing about her diagnosis and to not mention anything about it, which I thought was a questionable choice—I personally am not in favor of their decision. The family thinks they are making the right decision by hiding the truth when all they are doing is showing denial and avoidance, and to me, it only seems selfish.
In a later scene, during the funeral of M’s grandfather, M soon found out that almost all that the grandfather had left was given to M's cousin, Mui, because she was his caretaker. This information was what motivated M to move into his grandmother Sew’s home and take care of her himself. However, he eventually proved himself to somehow be even more selfish by telling his grandmother about her diagnosis. It was an unexpected moment, and his bluntness made me want to scream. On one hand, it felt like a betrayal of his mother’s wishes, but on the other, it may have been one of the most honest things he did in the entire film. I was torn between pitying him and still being so frustrated by his apparent lack of compassion. I do believe that Sew had the right to know, however. I thought that M made the right decision by telling her about her diagnosis, but looking back after finishing the movie, he probably only told her for his convenience.
As the movie progressed, M seemed to become more willing to help his grandmother around. This took me by surprise, as I was not expecting such behavior from him, especially with the first impression he had on me. M’s slow transformation was filled with bittersweet moments. The small, tender moments, like selling congee together, felt fragile and precious. Still, there was a lingering question of whether his actions were driven by genuine care or ulterior motives that kept me in a state of suspicion about his character.
M’s uncles were constantly on my nerves. Soei specifically would always cause a headache for me every time he appeared in the movie. He did not have a job, would constantly get arrested, and would rely on his mother, Sew, to bail him out. The last time he visited, he was caught stealing his mother's savings, and he would often visit while drunk. Not to mention, he owes his mother one million baht, and that in itself is such a bizarre amount that it’s unforgivable in my perspective. As for Kiang, the other uncle, he would barely visit his mother, and even if he did, he would leave as early as he could because of his own family duties. Kiang in general seemed disinterested in his mother’s life, despite the fact that she was already in a very bad state. Only M’s mother and M himself were the only ones to show even the slightest bit of genuine concern for grandmother Sew, but even that makes me sad—to think that only one of the three children M’s grandmother had cared enough to sacrifice more than just time for her.
As the family became more and more distant, everyone started visiting grandmother Sew less. Sundays that would fill their home with laughter had become quiet. Despite how M was slowly starting to mature and realize the sacrifices his grandmother had made for their family, everyone was either too busy or was not in the best state for them to visit. I was both sad and frustrated with all of the family members for being so selfish. It had come to the point in the movie where M’s grandmother had become bald from her chemotherapy. She would appear so sad every time her hair would fall off, but M would always manage to cheer her up. It would sadden me every time Sew would mention things that imply her death, because it would constantly remind me of my own loved ones who have passed.
With the hospital bills getting higher and higher, Sew had to resort to asking her older brother for money. After a heartfelt scene where Sew and her older brother were singing together and hugging, it cut to the scene where she eventually had to explain why she needed the money. This caught me so off guard because throughout the movie so far, grandmother Sew has been nothing but selfless and has never asked for anything from her family. To me, it felt out of character for her to ask for money, but then again, she was running out of options, which makes the whole situation more sad than it should be. In the end, the elderly siblings only ended up arguing and bickering because of the older brother’s refusal to give Sew any money. This made me angry. I couldn’t understand how you could refuse to do the littlest favor for your younger sibling, who is terminally ill. My anger amplified after Sew mentioned how her older brother was the one who always got what he wanted. It all seemed so unfair for grandmother Sew that I was just sitting, confused and frustrated, while watching all of this unfold.
Another visit to the hospital revealed that grandmother Sew’s conditions were not improving in the slightest. M tried lying at first, telling her that she'd be okay. It was devastating and heartbreaking to watch this entire scene. Eventually, grandmother Sew caught on to the reactions of both her daughter and her grandson. She then reached out her hands to both of them to hold theirs. I was barely holding any tears in anymore as M was showing genuine concern for his grandmother in this scene. Everything was so expected, and yet the emotional impact of each scene is just as strong every time I look back on the movie.
That night, M woke up to his grandmother Sew whimpering in her bed. She was begging the gods, goddesses, and her family above to take her. It was a triggering scene for me to see, as I have heard the same things said by my great-grandfather, who had recently passed. No matter how many times I repeat this scene, whether physically or just in my head, it never fails to make me cry. I felt so bad for grandmother Sew.
Even with Sew’s conditions, her family was still bickering about whatever there was to bicker about. It was always such a headache to see them argue because it always felt like walls talking to each other. None of them listened to each other, and it was so frustrating to watch because I know what that kind of arguing is like. Eventually, after grandmother Sew’s house was sold, M invited her to live with them, and thankfully, she accepted. Kiang and Soei finally visited after a while. M helped them both realize the sacrifices grandmother Sew had made for them. Still, I was bitter at the fact that they only visited when her conditions worsened.
The climax of the movie—where M sings to his grandmother as she’s passing away—was utterly heartbreaking. The buildup of his emotional distance, finally breaking down into raw, genuine tears, left me sobbing. I couldn’t properly process whatever thoughts I was having during this scene, as all I could feel was his regret, his sorrow, and his guilt for all the times he was absent emotionally. It was a lot to take in, especially because M, someone who has barely shown such emotion the entire film, seemed so vulnerable in this moment. He was crying and singing with such a shaky voice, and that was what made me confirm that this movie had emotionally ruined me.
Just before grandmother Sew’s funeral, M received what seemed to be the phone call of a lifetime. It was then revealed that Sew had been constantly depositing money into a bank account that belonged to M. This was another one of those gut-wrenching scenes, as the film revealed this by showing a flashback of grandmother Sew promising M to deposit money in his bank account until she dies. It was such a devastating final blow that tied together the title and the entire theme of the movie. The accumulation of both her love and her money felt like a symbolic passing of not just material wealth but the wisdom and compassion that M had been so blind to for much of the film.
The last thing M did for his grandmother was buy him the big plot of land for her grave, something Sew asked for earlier in the movie. It was so sad for me to see how M was swinging from smiling and crying on the way to her grave. This movie has such an emotional chokehold on me as it made myself swing between humor, frustration, and gut-wrenching sadness. It did not hesitate to showcase the complexity of family dynamics and made me reflect on my own family relationships. I do not think that I will be able to get over this film for a while. M’s journey to emotional maturity was difficult to watch, but it served as a reminder that family, no matter how flawed, is worth cherishing while we still have time.

A BIT OF THE BEFORE [for dodie]
The best thing Kendra James ever does is reupholster all the shag carpeting in the house. This makes it much easier for Dodie to wallow overnight in the corner of her bedroom.
Sometimes, if she’s got her good PacSun hoodie on (with the thumb holes and the built-in earbud drawstrings that connect to her iPod), and some fuzzy socks, she doesn’t even need to use a blanket. The nights will start with a racing mind and end in the deep, drugged-without-drugs sleep that depression causes so many people to fall into.
Even this rare good thing from Kendra has Bad attached. Side effect of these plush-carpet-pillowed nights: as easily as racing thoughts and slumber come, so too does morning, missing the bus, incurring Kendra’s wrath for needing a ride. Dodie prays on these days for Grandma Dolly to feel well enough to drive her instead of Kendra ‘Can Never Be Late For Work’ James. Then Kendra’s schedule changes, and Dolly’s health declines, and suddenly it’s easier in these times for Dodie to call herself in sick (the attendance office at the high school always falls for her Kendra impression).
The thing is, ever since the family split and Dad and Little Denny went off their own way, it’s actually less work for Kendra to be stuck with an ailing mother and depressed daughter instead of them two plus Dad the Manchild and Denny the Actual Rowdy Schoolboy. When Dodie’s not thinking of herself as The Big Disappointment, she is able to muster a bit of grace to speculate (privately) that Kendra’s become a nightmare because she’s feeling like a failure for not holding the family together.
Listen. Dodie’s also just tryna survive – between home, and the other hard place where hardly anyone connects with her: school.
When Dodie (having finally accepted that her first Black geek friend is not an online figment of her imagination but someone who exists in her town, in her same school) starts talking to Zeke offline, she’s surprised to learn Zeke cares nothing about her massive follow/friend count. “I have an extension to hide all that shit,” she tells Dodie.
“But can’t other people still see it?”
“Yeah, but I can’t, which is all I care about.”
Other Things Zeke Cares About:
Dodie’s nail care (Dodie will never again rock chipped black polish & chewed-up nailbeds while Zeke has an acrylic kit @ home)
Dodie’s makeup (“You can still be all goth and spooky but let’s do it CLEAN!”)
Under Zeke's hand, Dodie sees things about herself gloss over in some areas and come together, less ABC Extreme Makeover and more like using the Photoshop sharpening tool IRL. One day, she makes the mistake of leaning into the never-before-received curious attention of alt onlookers at school – only to be met with a Greek Chorus of Jeers (Tryhard, Wannabe, Poser, White Chocolate, and so many dumbass Marilyn Manson puns involving slurs). Zeke’s not there to protect her (Dodie would never expect her to be, Zeke’s her own person, not Dodie’s guard dog), and anyway, Dodie found out the consequences of being a Black Girl Fighting Back in the white town of Dagmar early on in life. She knows that her best chance of survival in this, as with everything, is to take it on the chin. To stay grateful for the few good things she has.
THE REALITY NOW [for zeke]
Dodie dies.
The remaining James family moves away before Zeke can process anything. Consensus among the people of Dagmar who notice is that the death was by Dodie’s own hand. And Zeke’s not saying she wholly disagrees with that (Kendra’s shitty enough that Zeke can imagine many people being driven to the edge by her), but she feels a hole like a missing puzzle piece, and the hole is what her friend left in her, but it’s also wonder – What exactly befell Dodie James?
Who else but Zeke cares enough to find out?

Spoiler-Free Review: I'll admit I'm really, REALLY late getting onto this particular boat. This book was originally published in 2010, when Visprint was still going strong, but thankfully Avenida Books has picked up Visprint's banner so it's still in circulation (publishing in the Philippines is ROUGH y'all). I picked this up is because I found out on Twitter that there's going to be a movie adaptation out on Amazon Prime, and I got curious.
Now, full disclosure: as a result of my upbringing, I'm AWFUL at reading Tagalog. I was raised in an English-engaged household and struggled with Tagalog all throughout my years in school, including while at uni (during which I improved the most, but not nearly as much as I'd like). Matter of fact I STILL struggle with it, especially if it's the literary Tagalog most often used by the literary luminaries who write in the language. Fortunately, Ong writes in a more colloquial Tagalog, which is a bit easier for me to grasp - especially now that I'm working and use the language a lot more.
This novel is the diary of a college student named Gilberto "Galo" Manansala, who started writing it as part of his requirements at school, but keeps writing in it as a way to record the events of his life and the way he feels about them. The first half of the book focuses primarily on that, and depicts not just the typical college drama involving teachers, friends, and romantic partners, but also what it means to be someone from the province who's come to Manila for a college education, and is relying on other members of his family to support them. When that support falls through, though, Galo takes certain extreme actions, and winds up having to go back home to the province to avoid the consequences.
The second half of the novel takes place in Galo's home province, where he goes back to see his ailing grandmother and (ostensibly) take care of her. While there, he finds out that something ain't quite right with Grandma, and with the town as a whole. This is where the horror actually comes in, as Galo learns about what his grandmother's been up to, what's happened since he left the town to go to Manila for his education - and what that knowledge does to him by the end.
Now, while the first half of the novel is pretty interesting because of the way it depicts life for the average college student, I did kind of wish it had been shorter? I understand that the author was trying to paint out Galo's life to give the reader a full picture of who he is as a person, and the events depicted and hinted at in the first half do come into play in the second half, but I did move through that first half wondering when the horror would finally come in.
Fortunately, once that second half begins the book really does live up to the horror genre, and it is horror in a specifically Filipino way that ensured I'd read this only in broad daylight. The tropes will be familiar to Filipinos who grew up watching the Shake Rattle 'n Roll movies, the old Magandang Gabi Bayan Undas specials, and inhaled Psicom's True Philippine Ghost Stories collections: the old provincial mansion, the isolated town, the unique religious practices-- All of those things will resonate with a creepy familiarity with Filipino readers. The themes, too, will have a familiar resonance for that same set of readers who engaged with the aforementioned media before; I don't think Ong is treading much new ground in that regard, since the theme of "Your sins come back to haunt you eventually" is a common one. But the execution is pretty enjoyable, and that ending is sure to send a tingle up the reader's spine.
So overall, Ang Mga Kaibigan ni Mama Susan was a pretty fun, fast, and undoubtedly spooky read - but largely in the second half. The first half is a bit of a slog, and I can imagine some readers just skimming their way through it to get to the creepy bits - something which I think they'd be justified in doing, as it does run a bit overlong for my tastes. But what happens in that first half has implications for what happens in the second half, so it helps to pay attention in order to see the full scope of the horror that finally descends on Galo by the end.

Will they let me over if I cross The Line?
Goodnight, grandma.
It’s a pretty loving, innocuous thing to say, and for the better part of three years, as I lived sequestered with my aging and ailing grandparents in the family home in Campbell, California I would close every night by checking in on my grandmother before bed; recounting the day, and chores to be still done the coming days and weeks.
But on the evening of Friday, April 15th, 2011 “Goodnight, grandma” would make the first of two radical changes to me; and one later on for my family…
I suppose it’s best to start more toward the beginning, and I’d be happy to, if it weren’t such a convoluted mess to here from there. Of the entire thing I can say that, as the black sheep of the family – trying to be a man of reason, education, and all that – growing up in a conservative fundamental family bore a great deal of emotional weight. Ours was not a loving, nurturing family, but one based on superiority of righteousness and shaming of those perceived lower.
So, I was targeted a lot by my grandparent’s Christian love.
I would later come to find that my entire immediate family was at the receiving of their gracious and tender affections, but I think those are family traumas best left to us for the time being.
But, to the end of it, I spent my entire life seeking the love and affection… and most of all the acceptance… of the patriarch and matriarch of my mother’s family, who pretty much controlled most of how our lives were supposed to be led. Which they dished out from on high, with a bible in one hand, and judgmental condemnation from their mouths.
As a quick overview, my family were the exact kind of people who would come to start “religious deconstruction”; a social movement in which younger generations would reevaluate their Christian upbringing, and eventually leave the church. This movement continues today, to the worry of the religious power structure, to the point that some of the newest generations don’t even identify with ever having been religious at all.
The idea was quite simple, really; when younger church goers start practicing what they were preached at with they find themselves at odds with those who did the preaching. I mean, you can’t – with one hand – tell people to be accepting, charitable, giving, and to give care and shelter to the immigrants and then turn around and barf hate, greed, racism, and classism.
So that was my family. And it was doubly odd since my grandfather had left NASA to get into the family business of his family’s god as a minister; with just about everyone in my family active in “the ministry” except me. So, to my confusion – being decades ahead of the deconstruction movement – that a NASA engineer and a medical nurse… and a family of talented engineers and thinkers… would so unabashedly abandon the mind for… well, for everything that wasn’t.
And, as the first-born grandchild, there was this level that was expected of me in my part of this family that not only did I opt not to take, but actively spoke out against.
I guess it’s fair to say that I spent my entire adult life at odds with my family, and in an awkward, often painful, adversarial relationship with my maternal grandparents.
Despite all this I did love my family and my grandparents, even though not being able to get them to even ask me about my life, rather than just damning me for it. And so, in 2008 – as the economy took yet another dive (Because life in America, amiright?) – I found myself living in the family home in Campbell, Ca, trying to get back on my feet and making my keep by helping out around the house. (I guess it pays to have a grandson who is a professional maintenance tech.)
There’s good and bad memories in that time. But it was supposed to be a temporary passing. Until their health began to slip. My award winning NASA engineer grandfather had developed Alzheimer’s and my grandmother developed a hear condition. And when I finally managed a place equidistant from them and work, they told me they’d prefer me to stay at the house. Which I did.
For three years, telling no one.
I don’t know exactly why I felt I had to keep this a secret, but I felt I should. I don’t know if my cousins even knew, but as the rest of them – four, plus my sister – were married and had families, me being without those responsibilities seemed like a no-brainer perfect fit; fulfilling my duties as the first born grandchild.
Between work and their needs my hands were full through the week. Weekends the two aunts who were running the show would let me slip out for a break (Which would be one of the very few kindnesses they’d ever show me.) and I would run off to see friends at clubs at other activities, or spend a night or two in a nice hotel with the horrible mistake I was seeing at that point in my life. (Bitter? Nah, not me.)
And so, on that Friday evening in April I was in the house washroom, which was across from the door to the master bedroom, washing up and getting a few things together for a short outing when my grandmother called me in to talk. We did that often, as they had both – in that final year – actually stopped blanket condemning me and had started actually inquiring about my beliefs and motivations and the other things that made up my life. (Shocked the fuck out of me, let me tell you what.) And that’s what I figured it must be as I stepped into the room to talk with her.
It was, of course, not.
There was no chit-chat, no nuance, no subtlety around it, it just dropped out of her face; I was a disappointment. More to the point, not only was I a disappointment, but I had no relationship with her god, my health was always bad, I hadn’t accomplished anything, and I was going to die alone, which she found most troublesome strangely enough.
I remember standing there dumbfounded in shock. I had just given up three years of my life to care for them. During that time I had recovered my career from an economic recession, and was still occasionally performing on stage, as well as making my own comics and getting actively involved in that community. I had already survived cancer and had left my childhood infirmaries behind decades past. I had quite literally beaten all the odds my pedestrians had laid out for me and was a tough, outgoing, and pretty self-sufficient man.
It was an awkward minute of silence before I could make words; to which all I could say was, “I’m sorry I didn’t turn out to be the man you wanted me to be, grandma.” At that point her face said something I couldn’t read. So all I had was my customary “Goodnight, grandma,” and added something to the affect of loving her and would se her when I got back.
Goodnight, Grandma. That would turn out to be the last words we would ever share.
I got home on April 17th, 2011 to find grandma unresponsive. My aunts had informed me her condition deteriorated over the weekend and tonight might be it. And it was.
A handful of us sat with her until she finally past. We then excused ourselves so grandpa could be alone with the now deceased love of his entire life. (This would begin the year from hell that would be his final year in the waking world. But that’s another story.) The only thing of that night I can recall with any veracity is watching the stark white van of the county coroner driving off with the body who had once been my grandmother. I stood there alone, outside, on the curb way longer than the van was even on our street.
I also remember the two distinct feelings going through my mind at that moment. The first left me feeling guilty in that I had now outlived my life’s greatest adversary, and that felt wholly righteous to do so as her unwavering devotion to her god gave way to the fear of dying. To this day I really have no explanation as to why that came over me, but there it was.
And, of course, there were our parting words. I sometimes think back and wonder if she had, in that moment, regretted what she said. She so rarely admitted anything to be a mistake, that maybe that’s why I couldn’t read her face that night. And maybe that’s why those words hung in the air after stabbing me so deeply. I wonder if she even thought about apologizing, waiting for me to get home that weekend so we could talk.
I very much doubt it, but I still wonder.
Those words would find their way into the air only one last time. Family and friends had come to the wake to speak to the account of my grandmother and say one last goodbye. In circumstance alone, after everyone had passed the coffin, it was only my first sister and I left. In her weakness she refused to leave the pew. So, with the eyes of generations on me, as well as church leaders, friends, and associates I, alone, approached her.
I have no words that wouldn’t stain the confused mess of feelings I was, looking down at the body that once was Dorothy Maxine Yaggy. It was an empty shell, and it looked wrong. I know I held back a tear being aware that an entire church had their eyes on me. So I smiled, turned, and begun to walk back to me seat. And then that’s when it simply slipped out, like a reflex…
“Goodnight, grandma.”
I’m numb after that. I remember hearing I think my mother start to cry. To be truthsome on it, I vaguely remember anything else of that day. I know some people spoke to me, someone tried to comfort me despite my insistence I was okay. But the rest is just a commotion of voices, colors, and stories. And hugs; lots, and lots of hugs.
My grandmother’s words and deeds in my life have made lasting scars on my soul, as her influence still reaches out from the grave to tighten its stranglehold grip on me. Worse still is seeing her very being now emanating from my own mother as she approaches the age of her mother when she died. (Which has caused me to build a safety wall between us; fortified by 3000 miles of continent.)
But what haunts me most, as I make my own way west to the gate that leads to The Afters is that she was right; I will die alone not having accomplished anything. And of all the things I do not fear this is the one I do; even though my life holds a trove of laughter, friends, found family, lives saved, problems solved, and my own mind expanded in ways that grapple understanding in ways that impress even the spirits. I worry most, now, that I won’t… die well.
I had thought these things all done and buried until late this year, when in the soundtrack to Arcane act 2 “The Line” by 21 Pilots became the runaway smash hit of the album; Tyler Joseph having had penned it around the death of his grandmother. In listening to it, I can hear the love he had for her, and the uncertainty in facing mortality. But quietly, privately, I think his lyrics hit me in a hard way he couldn’t have foreseen. And freely I admit to you here that I cry a little hearing this song and those words “Did I disappoint you? Will they let me over if I cross The Line?”
Goodnight, grandma; hopefully you traveled well. In your life you taught me how to be great by your example of how you weren’t. In your death you showed me courage to face my end in how you didn’t. You left the biggest scar on my soul that would never heal… and it was the greatest gift you could ever give me.

12:08 technically Feb 22nd. Listening to Nicki Minaj’s Save Me. Sitting up in my room.
Sigh. I dunno if I wanna write, I have tears welling up already. I am so sensitive dawg. So like, in north Amerikkka, racism and capitalist consumerism/exploitation is what harmed me the most. Here it is sexism, classism and exploitation that is hurting me. The things hurting me in the west and the things hurting me in Kenya are rooted in the same thing, colonization. I think the most frustrating thing is the conversation or knowledge of colonization and neo colonization is not common. The sexism directly hurts me, the classism and exploitation indirectly. It was so loud when I was downtown today. Honestly, it kinda reminded me of why I stopped going to downtown Toronto. The racism, consumerism and exploitation was too loud in the Siggz. Seeing a Black addict od’ing beside a lambo and no one caring had me SHOOK. Here the classism and exploitation is fucking with my head. Seeing 5yr olds living on the street and panhandling screams system failure. As a kid downtown was a bougie, rich town. Now downtown is for the laborers as the middle/upper class have exited the city. It’s too much, it's overwhelming. You have to come face to face with the violent poverty the average Kenyan is dealing with the minute you get to Tom Mboya street. I am not sure what to do. I just got here and I am in observation, learning, and growth mode. I don’t know if I will do like I did in Canada and protect my peace of mind while still challenging colonization and whiteness while separating myself from whiteness. What does that look like here, challenging classism, exploitation while separating myself from it? It doesn’t even feel Gøod to write that. But the same way I was not safe in white spaces, here I am not safe in male or poor spaces due to system failure/colonization. All this is dawning on me after spending one afternoon in the heart of the city. I am trying to be Gøod. I am trying to be a Saint. I am trying to find enlightenment. But like, can I do it while sheltering myself from the things that ail my fellow humans? I left Islanders with a tool kit, something I believe can help Islanders move towards Gøod and away from the continued direction of hatred and oppression. I don’t know what my he(art), my politics, or my personhood will evolve into in Kenya. And maybe that is what is making me cry. Because I know myself. If just seeing this today is making me cry, then I know me. I will find something that I can do about it because that is who I am. I know that art, he(art), will be at the center of it. So yeah, I took an uber downtown, spent the afternoon with my Grandma there, walked to the shop to buy some stuff for the house, back to my grandma's cafeteria then home. I showered and ate as soon as I got home because I was so tired and wanted an early night. Instead, I spent an hour + on the phone with My Munene. Honestly, he is ___________. I Love him. I was telling him about my day, my feels, how the country is still asleep and drowning in neo-colonization. He hears me. He sees me. He validates me. He also LOVES this country and so he wants better as well. And with him, I can. With him, I will. Kenya is our baby, we are Kenya’s baby. God’s plan is the only plan. Trust the Universe, it's an orgasm. Life is still Gøod. Ase.

Trippin At Joshua Tree Trip
Spent Memorial Weekend at Joshua Tree since I've been craving for a vacation, especially since I worked in tourism, my social battery just always feels drained.
I just booked a cabin in the desert, it's (now) called "glamping" but honestly, you get what you pay for, especially if you're a native city-dweller like me with no boy/girl scout experience or how to camp overall. It felt like it was still worth every penny.
Just not with airbnb since they're assholes who will ALWAYS side with the hosts, even if the hosts will require their guests to clean every nook and cranny just to be charged a "cleaning fee."
Anyways, I took LSD on the way there because, again I wasn't sure what's to see out there in a desert, just thought that rocks and cacti will be boring if you're not high..
Well, I was wrong. I still had an 'ok' trip on the drug but I wished I could see the stars better. I have to admit, I felt like a stereotypical boho, white girl there as while I was tripping, I felt like I wasn't just feeling like I'm "one with" the desert, but the universe with how the sky was brightly sprinkled by stars. Not forgetting the beautiful sunset and sunrise!
I'm honestly afraid to divulge more about the LSD trip because I tend to have the opposite side effects to what others have described theirs as essentially, being on the trip has helped me refocus on my values in life.
Such instance was when we were watching the sunset just outside of the cabin, I gave a blanket and my cap to my partner while we were sitting outside the patio and .. I just felt like time paused for that moment since when I was looking at his side profile, he reminded me of my dear uncle, Bobby and how I wished so badly that he was there with us to enjoy the beautiful sunset.
In the end, I couldn't sleep and spent the wee hours of the morning until sunrise at the bonfire crying about my life (from past to present) because, in my head, I revolved my thoughts around Uncle Bobby.
Growing up, he was one of the 2 adults who was pretty consistent in my life until his passing in my junior year of high school. I've mostly felt guilt from childhood till now because I had wished for him.. in the end, I could only feel like me and my family abandoned him back in our home country, especially since we migrated to America. We did visit our home country every summer for at least a couple of months (our entire summer after school), but my abuser kept taking us to places that she can shop or vacation at while I can barely have a day to stay in our house, what more let Uncle Bobby out of his room to see him.
His scenario was similar to the book "Flowers in the Attic" by V.C. Andrews because his family, our other 20+ relatives, saw his severe Cerebral Palsy as an embarrassment, if not a "punishment from God" (since some of them converted to a variety of religions) YET they cheated him and his mother (grandma) from what inheritance/insurance they could've received from his father's (grandpa) passing so by the time I was born, my mother (abuser) had to shoulder the financial obligations while needing to pay someone peanuts to take care of both an ailing old woman and a man with severe disabilities. We were already in 3rd world poverty by the time I was born, if my abuser hadn't married an American, I wouldn't be here now having the time to do the things I never once thought, what more imagined to do.
In the end, I still revolved my life around the thought of my uncle for what I could remember him. Even though its been 10 years and 7 months since he passed, and I still remember spending the summer for his wake and funeral, I still think of him just as he was still alive.
I just can't stop crying since its the only thing I knew to do. I've been labeled as a loner before I knew what that even meant because the other kids thought I was "creepy" being by myself.
Truthfully, I like being alone with my own thoughts or rather 'world' as its the only place I could feel like I had a family, or rather.. they were still alive.
I endured all the bullying and ostracism because for me, it didn't hurt as much as losing my family. At 3 yrs. old, my grandma passed away, I never met my bio dad since he walked out before I was a year old, so until I was 17, I only had my abuser, uncle and his caretaker. Even though we had A LOT of relatives, they were cold and cruel because they saw my family as the 'black sheep', despite my grandpa having supported them, especially financially when they came from nothing themselves. I did have a few others in my life but they passed away as I was growing up that I felt like I was "bad luck."
I never cared for others to think I'm pathetic for crying because I felt like I found some comfort in my own head letting it all out while getting some answers that felt like it was "good enough" to help ease the pain of losing people who you'll never see again.
When I was watching the stars, I could only think of Carl Sagan's quote that people are made of the same materials as the stars. In my naivety or wishful thinking. I could only hope that the people who have passed in my life (if there is reincarnation) that they can be whoever or whatever they are now, but I could only remember Mark Twain's quote about him never having to fear dying because .. he never did care about being born either. It was a lottery, still I want to be hopeful, if not for myself, at least for Uncle Bobby. I still wished that I was there for him when he was always there for me when I was getting abused at home and in school because he was the first (after grandma) to see me as a family that even my own parents never wanted me.
In a way LSD has made reflect and remind me of the way and why I do things.

The Seamstress (Original Thought Process)
As I have said time and time again, I always write from my life. As they always say, write what you know. I'm following directions here.
My grandma was a seamstress. If you didn't know, this bitch (me) can sew. I can even use a friggin' sewing machine, although they intimidate me a little, since it's been a long time since I've used one.
Anywho, my Abuelita, the love of my life, the Queen of my World and the Woman who made me who I am today (love me or hate me) was a seamstress.
Seeing the machines and watching the ladies hands, on Gentefied, reminded me of visiting her at her job. She only had a 3rd grade education but she did everything she could to make sure her family was straight.
We always had food to eat and a roof over our heads to call home. She was always the first person I ran to for comfort, even when I didn't say what was ailing me. She knew how to make me laugh and she laughed hard. Even dropped her teeth out the window a couple of times (que linda).
She was the definition of true, unadulterated love. She took care of her 5 children, the children her husband sired before her, their significant others and they're families.
When she passed, the world became a little dimmer. I remember, sitting in the church, after her passing, and hearing all of my family speak about her. The Theme was "Grandma's Favorite." Everyone stood up and spoke about how she made us feel like we were her favorites even if we knew someone else actually was.
She loved us all unconditionally and showed it to us in the various ways grandmas show love. She cooked us separate dinners. She made sure we had what we needed, even when we didn't know it. She gave advice, we never took then, but look back on and realize she was wiser beyond her 3rd grade education in ways that people couldn't comprehend.
When I became a mother for the 3rd time, it made me so sad to know that my son would never know the love of his great grandmother and the ones who did, didn't have her around long enough.
I sometimes get sad thinking about my Wella, but someone reminded me of something.
My grandma raised me and my cousins. She didn't raise all of us for a long time, but I am definitely the one that stood the longest. I facetimed my cousin, recently, while I was at home with my own grandson. We talked and my cousin asked me, "So you baby sit him? And you work?" Then he says something that made my heart smile although it also made it break. "So you're grandma?"
Let me clarify for you chicos. Yes, I AM a grandma, but that's not what he was saying. He laughed because he was telling me, revealing to me, that I was MY grandma. All the lessons she taught me and all of the advice she gave me, I may not remember them verbatim, but I live them. I know how to lead with love. Show compassion. Love everyone and I try my best to make all the chiquitos feel like they're my "favorite."
My granddaughter lives with me. She has parents who love and adore her but right now, I'm the most stable person in her life (if you can believe that). I am surrounded by children, including my own, all the time and I feel like my life is not my own sometimes. I speak to her when I am frustrated because I don't understand how she did it, but she did it.
She did it so effortlessly too. She's been gone for quite a while, but I am still in awe of her. Her life wasn't easy, not ever, but she made life happy for us. If anything, she is who I strive to be like. She would laugh and fight and be disappointed and smile and love us with all of her round being.
I remember, waking up when I was about 9, in what felt like the middle of the night, to get ready to go with her to work. By this time, she worked as the lunch lady in a school in China Town. Everyone loves the lunch lady. Those children loved her. Please be reminded, she only has a 3rd grade education so how she was able to pull a Board of Education job is beyond me. That is the wonder that was my Wella.
We used to wake up at the crack of dawn. She'd allow me and my cousin to cake make up on our faces. We'd walk to the train station and head to Spring St. We'd help, at times, in the kitchen, but most of the time she'd tell us to sit in the Cafeteria and color, or draw, or write. She did back breaking work. There's no doubt about that and she did it with a smile and pride.
Oh man, how she loved me. She was devoted to God and her family.
I know there were times where she cried. I know there were times when she didn't know where our next meal was going to come from. She was a woman that lived the Meme: kids aren't supposed to feel your raindrops. We didn't. I didn't.
Everything I am and everyone I hold dear, I have her to thank for. My life would've been so different if she didn't step in and say: I'll take her.
I don't think I ever got the chance to thank her for any of it. I was a stupid teenager who turned in to a stupid 20 year old. She understood though because she always welcomed me back with open arms.
My little seamstress, my abuela, the love of my life and the Queen of my world. She was amazing and if I am 1/2 as amazing as she was, I would've done something right in this lifetime.

It was a winter morning in Edinburgh, it had been a few months since the girls' graduation from Luna Nova, the year 2021 had started a few days ago. Akko planned to start her career as Shiny Akko, but she still faced conflicts within the mansion, as well as no from many witches who didn't want to have their reputation linked to something comical and funny, even with Kagari saving everyone, the conservatism in society still remained. Diana was the leader of the Cavendish family, after going through Daryl's proposal for a marriage of interest with James Mark II, the girl was getting colder and sadder, after all she remembered something, starting to ignore little by little Kagari, which was quite strange. Diana used to be cold, but not at that point. Akko was waking up next to Diana and soon noticed that the Cavendish had already gotten up.
POV Akko:
Diana has been very cold lately, colder than this place, holy shit, for the nine witches... I thought it would be wonderful to move here, but we can barely get along... What the fuck? Ever since that James Mark II showed up here, she's been like this... More like she's being forced to marry him... But Diana is the head of the family Ahh... I'm getting up from here.
I get up and go to the bathroom of the huge suite, brush my teeth, take off my crimson robe with "Akko" written on it, put it next to my fiancée's cyan robe, open the shower and start to take a bath, the drops of water washed my body as if they were washing my soul, it was really nice to take a bath in that bathroom, the water was always at the ideal temperature. As soon as I get out of the shower I take a towel, dry my body, wrap myself in it and go into the huge closet of our room, I put on a t-shirt, an overcoat, since it was very cold, "New, as if it wasn't cold every day here in Scotland" and a pair of sweatpants, when I finish getting dressed I put on my bunny slippers and walk through the corridors to the dining room, where I find Anna waiting for me outside the door.

The Cavendish family only allows to succeed children conceived here by both people.... And how am I going to make one with Akko, being that we are two girls.... Ah... What am I going to do... I can't allow Daryl's lineage to be the dominant one...

- Love Harajuku pancakes! How cute, I love it - I say dipping a pancake and dousing it with maple syrup. I end up remembering my first time with Diana and almost burst out laughing, but I held back as much as I could.
- Akko! What's so funny - said Diana trying to force a refined accent, being that I know how she spoke in a totally different way to me.

The days went by quickly as Akko went from Dublin to Edinburgh, the Kagari managed to hide very well from Cavendish everything she was planning, no one from the Cavendish family residence suspected, which was great.
After this week passes without much happening, Friday arrives where Laura McLaren and her daughter Diana Cavendish were to meet again after almost 20 years, the long-awaited day has arrived.
It was a Friday morning, Laura had already left Dublin at five o'clock in the morning, possibly arriving at noon in Edinburgh, leaving with the Lotus Carlton 1990 that was one of her cars, this one in particular was McLaren's favorite car. - You can't go out barefoot - said Cavenboring, already starting to get on my nerves.
- All right, all right, Bleh, you Cavenboring - I say holding out my tongue and taking my slippers and putting them on, while the cuddly cabbage put on her kitten slippers and put on a plaid jacket, while I went without a jacket.
- Where are you going without a coat? - Again the Cavenboring implies me, this time throwing an orange coat to me, and it wasn't even cold, inside the room it was even warm.
I put on my coat because I didn't want to see Cavenboring pick on me and as soon as we leave I notice why she gave me the coat, I already feel the icy wind in the halls of the mansion, which were not heated so as not to spend on heating, so only in the bedrooms I leave the heater on.

POV Narrator:
The hours went by that morning, Akko was waiting playing some video games, so much so that she opened a live stream, this time playing some Yu Gi Oh Forbidden memories, playing in a challenge she called no Free Duel. Which was much more complicated since she couldn't lose since she was also competing in story mode the whole time.
Laura was arriving in Edinburgh, driving as fast as she could, sometimes slowing down in case there were speed cameras nearby, but that didn't stop her from going as fast as she could to reach the Cavendish family residence.
By the time 11:55 arrived, Laura was already at the door of the Cavendish mansion.
POV Laura:
I arrive at the gate of the Cavendish family residence, press the button of the gate control and soon I notice that they open for me, which already impressed me, it was the same moldy control from 20 years ago... Someone could break into this place if they stole my car. Luckily they didn't try, or they would swallow their teeth. - Just in these few seconds the lady is already making up for it... My mother Laura - I say this while Akko was watching everything, she was bursting into tears, my mother immediately looks at her and starts laughing.
- Come here little brat, you're family too - said my mother calling for Akko, who joined in a family hug... Brat? I like that nickname, I guess I'll have to get used to the idea that I have two mothers? It seems that Akko was right all along about the fertility stone... Who knew it would be under my nose all the time.

Summary: You knew all about the ring your grandmother had told you about and yet when the stone fell from it one fateful day, you weren’t truly prepared for its return, nor who it came back with.

You had returned home after a lengthy and mostly unsuccessful brainstorming session with Yoongi. You could see why he was thinking of fantasy novels because as you let yourself into your home, now cold and hungry from the long day, you felt as if you had become the main character in one.
Just what did all this mean? Where was your wise guide to teach you the ways to get through this? What journey would you even face now that the stone was gone?
A big part of you wanted to forget that it had even happened. That it was just a ring and your grandmother had spoken of something silly. You even went as far to pull the remaining silver from the finger it had lived on for years, trying not to look at the permanent indent in your skin that it had created.
You needed to forget all about today.
Except, as you trudged through your home, exchanging your clothes for your pyjamas, you found yourself stepping through the door to your study, staring at the wall lined with books. Most had been inherited from your grandmother, though the one you reached for first had been given to you by your mother shortly before she fell ill.
“You’ll get more out of this than I ever did, my love.”
It was an inconspicuous text, no title or author was scrawled on the front. You hadn’t really looked through it at the time, more focused on her ailing health. Now, you wondered if she had known this day might come.
Flicking through the first few pages, you sighed. It was in a different language, one you couldn’t understand. You placed the book down and went to make yourself something to eat, returning with your bowl of food to use the computer.
However, you stopped midway across the room, the book you had discarded now on a different page. “What’s this?” you murmured, picking it up on your way over to the desk, placing both your food and the leather-bound book down upon the surface as you took a seat before them.
There in the middle of the left page was an exact drawing of the ring you had worn for fifteen years. Blinking slowly, you took in the unique style of the ring you knew every detail of. This was no coincidence and looking around your room cautiously, you turned your attention to the right page to see what was written down about it.
You gasped when the words, before foreign and undecipherable started to make sense to you. Flipping back to the front of the book quickly, where the opening page had seemed incomprehensive, you now took in the first sentence with ease.
This book is not of the human world, you thought to yourself, a tremble running down your arm as you slipped back to the section about the ring. It was titled The Stone of Blood and you frowned. Was that the ring’s official name? Thinking back to the colour, you had just assumed it to be a ruby of some sort.
Was it actually made from some sort of… blood?
For the briefest moment, you were grateful for the stone leaving you if that was the case. A shudder rolled throughout your body at the thought of how you had protected and appreciated a ring made of blood. However, your curiosity was still present and you looked at the first statement about the ring, gasping lightly.
“The Stone of Blood is a love stone. It connects the realms of possibilities to those strong enough to possess it. The ring chooses its host and when the Triax connects, the stone falls into the possession of the divinity. The journey for the stone to return to the ring is one in which binds two unlikely entities through the truest of love.”
“Yeah sure, whatever,” you muttered through your shock, trying not to put any weight into it. You and the word love never went together. You had only suffered through mediocre attempts towards finding someone to adore. There was more than enough mortification in your past from dating tribulations that you had sworn off men altogether – apart from Yoongi, that is. But he was different. He was a part of your family, the person you had known the longest in your life outside of blood relatives.
You didn’t need a book to tell you that the stone you had worn had a habit of falling loose from the center of it to go find you a man. The idea was completely laughable and you started to do just that, laughing until your cynical mind was well and truly satisfied. If this was the journey your grandmother had hoped for, then she would be sorely disappointed. Perhaps the ring should have loosened off the Stone of Blood in her time so she could have met someone instead.
She had met someone wonderful. Your grandfather had been the most comfortable man to spend time with, spoiling you rotten as a young child with his affections and sweets. And had she not met him then you wouldn’t exist right now.
“Still, sorry grandma, this one isn’t a plight I’ll be taking on any time soon,” you spoke out loud, your eyes lingering on the book, vaguely taking in the words of sacrifice and hardship.
You needed to sleep. With your food now within your belly, you should go to bed and close out this ridiculous day from existence. In the morning, you would wake up to a brand new day, where books with strange languages didn’t make sense and didn’t need to worry about where the stone – the ruby as you had known it to be – had gone.
You were all too happy with it not returning.
When Namjoon landed with a thud, he remained still for a moment, accessing if any part of his body hurt. It was during this time that he realised the ground he had fallen to was covered in a plush rug, and he opened his eyes slowly.
He was inside a darkened space.
As his eyes adjusted to the lack of lighting, Namjoon sat up, wincing a little as he did so. It hadn’t been too hard of a fall, but his chest did hurt a great deal.
For a moment, he tried to recollect his thoughts. He remembered the day of sorting gemstones and going to leave to go have dinner with Marian. Furrowing his brows, he gasped at the arrival of the stone that had opened havoc on him and his studio.
The bloodstone.
Searching around his body for the cursed rock, he stopped when he saw his actions reflected across from him. Getting up from the floor, he moved towards the mirror hanging on the wall, his gaze widening. Hastily undoing the three buttons to his linen shirt, he pushed it aside to expose his chest.
“What the…” he breathed, finding the stone now embedded over the left side of his chest. His fingers ran over it gently, trying to find a way to pull it out of his chest. It was due to the red glow that he grew distracted of the extraction, frowning at the items on the shelf next to the mirror. He had never seen plants and paintings quite like these before.
Turning around, Namjoon shook his head in disbelief. Just what was this place? Looking for a way to light the space he was in, Namjoon fumbled around, bumping into something protruding in the wall. The room suddenly became illuminated with bright lighting, and he pressed the switch again, casting everything back into the shadows. He turned it on again and then grinned.
Back home, lighting was triggered by pulling a chain on a lamp. Wherever he was now had a superior system, he decided.
Rummaging through the strange yet wonderful items in the room, Namjoon smiled. This was a world unlike his own. The space was cluttered with possessions that he had no idea why anyone would need, however, he was eager to learn their purpose. As he soaked it all in, he noticed the kitchen was adjoined to the room. Or at least, what he assumed to be the cooking space. There was a cooking range with strange symbols on it and he decided against turning the knobs in case they ignited the flame.
Growing bold, Namjoon moved across to a door and twisted the handle. He found the bathing room in here and laughed with delight at the strange concept of no bathtub yet a raining waterfall came out from a spout on the wall.
Closing out of this room, he turned to another door, which led to storage and then the next that welcomed him into a library. This room he felt the most at home in, if he didn’t stare at the weird contraption sitting on the desk taking up most of the space. There, laid strewn beside it, was a book and he picked it up, surprised to find it written in his language. Did the owner of this home know of his world?
Flicking through the pages, he stopped when he saw something familiar, the shade of red catching his eyes. “Well, I’ll be damned,” he murmured as he scanned the explanation of the bloodstone. He moved from the first part to the next, his father’s concern now apparent.
“When the stone lands in front of the divinity, one must endeavour not to fall for its charms. It lures the purest of hearts towards its glow, implanting itself there until that of the host can free their heart from its captive state. Love can be fleeting once this occurs and if the host chooses that of human devotion instead, the stone will poison the blood of the divinity, condemning them to a life of being incapable of loving another. Even if the entity finds someone to care for, it won’t be at the same level of compassion as before.
The Triax will be broken and the bridge between worlds forgotten of until a new host is chosen worthy of the stone.”
Glancing down at his chest, Namjoon let the book drop from his grip. It landed on the floor with a bang, and before he could reach to pick it up, he became aware of another presence in the room.
You stared at him and then at the book, shaking your head in disbelief. And then you stilled completely, gaze cast towards his glowing chest. You swallowed visibly. “Just who are you?”
“Are you the host?” he asked in return, his grip now firmly around the spine of the book he held up. “Are you the one who captured me with this bloodstone?”

Stay Golden Sunday: On Golden Girls
Blanche’s rebellious grandson visits, and the Girls help straighten him out. Also, we get more information about St. Olaf.
Picture it...
Blanche is upset and a wreck -- and not, as Dorothy initially assumes, because she has cellulite. Her daughter Janet is attempting to fix her ailing marriage with a second honeymoon to Hawaii, and Blanche will have to look after 14-year-old grandson, David, for two weeks. Dorothy initially grouses about having a teenager in the house while she’s studying for a French exam, but they all agree to help Blanche look after David, including taking him to see Rambo.
SOPHIA: I sat through it twice, you’ll love it. He sweats like a pig and doesn’t put his shirt on.
The next day, the girls prepare for David’s arrival, while Sophia complains about having to put up with Dorothy snoring. Blanche comes home in a panic, saying David never got off the plane. A police officer arrives with David moments later and says he stowed away on the plane while it went onto the Bahamas. David talks to the girls for a grand total of two minutes before skipping out to go hang out a burger joint, despite Blanche’s pleas for him to stay. Sophia says Blanche should have smacked him for his disrespect, but Dorothy thinks the St. Olaf story Rose was about to tell would be punishment enough.
At night, Dorothy is trying to study while Sophia goes about her very noisy toilette (which for some reason involves patting Nivea onto the backs of her hands and immediately scrubbing it off with tissues). Dorothy can’t study with the noise, so both of them turn in for the night. They argue over the amount of topical ointments Sophia’s wearing, and the hacking sounds she makes as she’s sleeping. Dorothy reminisces about how she would crawl into bed with Sophia when she was a kid and had a nightmare. They bid a fond goodnight and finally settle down.
Suddenly, loud music booms through the house, waking everyone up. They run to the living room, where David and a few other teenagers are listening to rock music on a stereo. Dorothy sends the strangers on their way and tells David to clean up. David starts to throw what can best be described as a hissy fit over not being able to have his new friends over, and starts to mouth off to all of the girls. As soon as he gets into Sophia’s face, she lands his with a resounding slap. This quickly shuts him up and sends him running from the room.

Blanche goes to check on David, who’s still reeling from Sophia’s smack. He says he wants to go home, and when Blanche tells them he can’t because his parents aren’t there, David says it’s no different from when his parents are there. He breaks down and tells Blanche how his parents neglect him because they’re always fighting, and angrily rebuffs Blanche’s attempts to comfort him.
The next day, the girls give Blanche a collected list of chores David can start doing. Blanche isn’t sure how it’ll help, but Rose and Dorothy talk about how the chores they did growing up gave them a sense of responsibility. Blanche realizes the way she raised Janet -- not having to do anything, just as she was raised -- may have contributed to David’s current behavior, and decides she’s going to make up for these mistakes by doing what’s best for him.
ROSE: Did they have chores in Sicily? SOPHIA: Are you kidding? They invented chores in Sicily. Crossing the street without getting pregnant was a chore in Sicily. DOROTHY: Rose, never mention Sicily.
One night, Dorothy catches David trying to sneak out and asks him where he intends to go and what he’s going to do. David doesn’t have an answer, but protests all the work he has to do. Dorothy accuses him of wimping out and says life is going to get a lot tougher than some chores at his grandmother’s house. David finally opens up and talks about how upset he is. Dorothy reminds him that he’s surrounded by people who care about him and he’ll always be welcome, good-naturedly negotiating a chore exchange and cheering him up.
Some time later, the girls are having dinner with David, celebrating Dorothy passing her French exam. They also toast David’s improved attitude. He says that it “hasn’t been half-bad” and earnestly asks the girls to let him live with them permanently. Sophia hustles him out for ice cream and tells Blanche to call his mother. Blanche gets Janet on the phone and says David’s so happy at her home that she’s going to keep him. While we can’t hear Janet, she naturally protests. Blanche acknowledges she can’t keep him against his parents’ will, but gives Janet a stern warning about the consequences of neglecting him further.
BLANCHE: If you and Michael don’t straighten up and given that boy the love and attention he deserves, I will kick your uppity butt ‘til Hell won’t have it again!
The girls say goodbye to David, who’s going to join his parents in Hawaii. Blanche tells him to give his parents a chance, and Dorothy reassures him that he’ll always have a place with them. After he’s gone, the girls hope he’ll be okay. Sophia, meanwhile, will be happy not having to live with Dorothy’s infamous snores anymore.
“What are you trying to do, pickle yourself so you’ll live to be 100?”
I’m swiftly going to run out of ways to say “this is the first time the girls do X” but it’s the first season, so there are a lot of first times. While this isn’t the first time we’ve seen the girls with one of their offspring, this is the first time we’ve seen them do some parenting and discuss parenting.
ROSE: I just fixed a special treat for David. It’s the same little afterschool snack I used to make for my own son: A triple-decker BLT, a hearty helping of homemade potato salad, and a great, big slice of double chocolate fudge cake. DOROTHY: Oh, where was he going after school? The electric chair?
It’s actually kind of heartbreaking that it’s in a case of child abuse that we get to see them show off their parenting skills -- but I do appreciate that they cut David some slack and get to the root of his issues. I think a lesser show would just have the rebellious teenager “learn something” from his grandma and her friends and shape up, but Blanche instead gets him to open up about the real problem, which is that his parents are too wrapped up in their own problems to take care of him -- not to mention, as Blanche keeps mentioning, his father’s a Yankee.
I mean, this poor kid is so emotionally starved he thinks his parents would be thrilled to get rid of him -- and that’s unambiguously shown to be their fault, not his. Dorothy’s little speech challenging him not to give up on the people who’re actually making an effort to help him is a believable exchange between a teenager and a teacher. Fun fact: Billy Jacoby, the actor who plays David, was 16 when this episode aired.)

While I know it couldn’t happen within the confines of the show, part of me wishes he really could live with Blanche and the girls. I’m not sure if it was not as common for kids to be raised by their grandparents in the late 80s, but it certainly wouldn’t be unusual today. Still, if anything, this is the first time we get an idea of how hands-off a parent Blanche was, and how much she’d like to make up for that -- that’s definitely something that’ll come up again later in the show.
For what it’s worth, she strikes me as one of those people who’s a better grandparent than parent, but she does do some parenting in this episode: namely, her harsh correction of Janet, who’s too wrapped up in her own problems to take care of David. Blanche may not approve of Sophia’s more brutal forms of correction, but her going off on her daughter was no less impressive than that slap.
Now I’m gonna go on record to say I disapprove of hitting children. While I don’t have any of my own yet, I don’t believe children should be hit on the face or anywhere else as a punishment or preventative measure -- nor should anyone, if I’m being honest. However, I will say that I don’t think that’s what Sophia was doing. Her smack was more akin to when you slap someone who’s hysterical -- David was clearly whipping himself into a froth and any attempts to talk him down or intimidate him weren’t working, so Sophia administered a little… percussive intervention to bring him back down to earth.
Like Dorothy says later, it comes from a place of caring, and I think Sophia of all characters knows when something like that will help rather than hurt... melon baller notwithstanding. I do appreciate that Dorothy and Sophia’s interactions, both when they’re arguing and when they’re sharing fond memories, shows a healthy dynamic between parent and child to contrast what poor David is going through. There’s not much of a B-plot to this episode aside from Dorothy’s French exam, and much of it centers around the single scene of the two arguing in bed, but it’s by far the funniest scene in the whole episode.

Having watched all of the episodes up to this point -- and spending roughly a week over-analyzing each episode -- I think this is the first time we’ve ever gotten some true St. Olaf stories. Given that Blanche, Dorothy, and Sophia have their assigned “tasks” in the episode, the writers decided to give Rose the job of adding a little color and humor to the episode.
They do this by having Rose describe some stories from her home life on the farm, including Alice, the cow you had to milk while sitting on a stool -- as in, she sits on the stool. It’s our first indication that something isn’t quite right about the place where Rose comes from, though we only have her responsibilities as a child to go by. It’s not going to be the last time we hear about it, by a longshot, but it’s a great teaser of the sort of bizarro logic that St. Olaf runs on. And I really want to hear now what the heck happened to Alice that she had to sit on a stool.
By the way, the title is a reference to On Golden Pond, a film which also features a teenage boy bonding with grandparents -- and part of me wonders if this whole plot happened because they just couldn’t resist the reference to another well-known “Golden” thing.

Diary of a Junebug
A carriage ride down the rolling hill of daisies
Funny how looking closely at something seemingly mundane and ordinary suddenly gives you a newfound appreciation for them. Not that daisies aren’t pretty to look at, but it’s one of those things you take for granted at a glance. Upon closer look, you begin to see things like the shapes of the petals and the subtle differences in colors. No two flowers look alike and yet they’re still recognizable based on a few characteristics.
Eternia Mountain is one of those places that feels like you’ve traveled back in time. While there are utilities like plumbing and electricity, it’s very much like living in a remote place. The nearest town is roughly a half hour walk away - most of the residents rarely drive to town, or in general - and while the mountain folk get along with the townspeople, there is a disconnect.
Many say the gap’s gotten better in recent years, mainly with the younger generation, but at times it’s like they’re living in different worlds. Holly Anne jokes that her younger self would be appalled when she finds out that as an adult she’ll be spending some of her weekends hanging out in town. Having spent all her life in the mountains, Holly Anne can’t see herself anywhere else.
Many of the families have been living in Eternia for generations. Holly Anne’s spans back to her great-great grandparents. She was raised by her grandma Blessing, a beloved mountain folk who was known for her beautiful singing and kind heart. Blessing was kinda notorious as she was born in the middle of a fierce blizzard that ravaged the mountains. She was described by the mountain folk as a spirited and gentle soul.
Whenever she talks about her grandma, Holly Anne has nothing but fond memories. It’s sweet but also sad because it’s clear how much her death has left a void in Holly Anne’s heart.
I first met Holly Anne in Mulberry, where we both lived for a short time. Nothing against Mulberry but it wasn’t a place I could see myself settling down in. At the time we were both trying to find our place in the world. Holly Anne was going through a rough time with the loss of her childhood home followed by the passing of her adoptive guardians.
The old cottage was known as the daisy house because it was near a large hill that’s always blooming with daisies. Five generations lived in the little house that became the center of music for the mountain folk. It was the bedroom overlooking the daisy hill where Blessing took her first and last breaths. Holly Anne stayed with her until the very end.
After Blessing passed, Holly Anne was adopted by a family that lived on the other side of the creek. Her plan was to move back into the daisy house when she finished school so every once in a while she or a mountain folk would come by to tend to Blessing’s garden or do some cleaning. But as Holly Anne got older, upkeep kinda fell to the wayside, especially as the problems with it being such an old house began to surface.
With the cottage in need of repairs, Holly Anne was unable to move in as planned. Around the same time Holly Anne was helping Monnie care for an ailing Pop. While the daisy house was undergoing repairs, a faulty wire caused a fire that left the skies cloudy for days. For Holly Anne, it was like losing Blessing all over again. While things like Blessing’s dulcimer, various photo albums, and a box of keepsakes owned by Holly Anne’s mom were kept safe in Pop and Monnie’s house, everything else was gone.
Holly Anne was injured in the fire while trying to save whatever she could as well as make sure there wasn’t anyone inside. While she was recovering from her injuries, Monnie and Pop finally agreed to have an aide from town care for them, an idea they long resisted. So not only Holly Anne had to deal with the loss of her childhood home, but also the fact that her Pop and Monnie are nearing the end of their lives.
Within a year the old couple passed away and Holly Anne felt lost. Losing the daisy house was a devastating blow as she had built her future around it. She wanted to tend to Blessing’s garden and bring it back to its former glory. To play the dulcimer on the porch on a starry night like Blessing did before she fell ill. On rainy nights, she wanted to sit in the attic, look at the stuff hidden away, and make up stories about her ancestors. There was so much she wanted to do and gone it went, all up in smoke.
Not knowing what to do, Holly Anne decided to leave the mountains. She said it was an impulsive decision, a poorly thought out plan - not exactly the formative life experience she expected, but one she needed in order to gain clarity. The mountains held too many painful memories so Holly Anne felt that she had to get away. Problem was, she didn’t know where she wanted to go other than away.
So she moved to Mulberry, which was where most of the mountain folk who wanted to pursue higher education went. There, Holly Anne shared an apartment with Jane, her best friend, and they attended classes at Neighborhood Community College. Jane is currently going for a master’s degree in education and her dream is to open a school in the mountains so the kids wouldn’t have to make the long walk into town.
Holly Anne stuck around Mulberry for two years before going back home to the mountains. Mulberry’s one of those places that makes you feel unremarkable. Basically, most of the residents are here for something and once that’s done, they leave. It’s not the kind of town where you can see yourself settling down and taking root. I lived on the floor below Holly Anne and Jane and during my short time there, I think they were the only two people I befriended and interacted with on a regular basis.
Spending time away from the mountains helped Holly Anne clear her mind. She realized how much she missed her home and even though it’s not the same anymore, it’s still a part of her.
Through the losses she experienced, the daisies continued to bloom and grow. They were her anchor, a reminder of her roots. Her childhood home was gone but the memories are still there. Even after the smoke, the daisies kept blooming, a sign that life must go on. It’s an unspoken rule that Holly Anne is the keeper of the daisies, for they bloom the fullest when she’s around to care for them.
After leaving Mulberry, Holly Anne returned to Monnie and Pop’s house. She said it didn’t feel right to rebuild the daisy house. Instead the mountain folk decided to let nature reclaim the land and built a small garden memorial where the old orange blossom tree once stood. Since then Holly Anne has been tending to the garden and the daisies.
Over the years I’ve visited Holly Anne and Jane a few times when I was around the area. I can see how much more content and at peace Holly Anne is on the mountains than in town. Though since living in Mulberry she has grown to tolerate the townspeople. Maybe she does live a somewhat sheltered and reclusive life, but she doesn’t mind at all. She has joked to townspeople that she tried living in the “outside world” and said “no, thanks.” as soon as her trial was up.
Since I last visited and saw the daisy hill, the blooms have flourished and thrived. It almost doesn’t look real - more like a painting from a fairy tale! Holly Anne never expected to inherit Blessing’s green thumb, considering that as a kid she never really enjoyed gardening and only did it out of obligation. She describes it as frustrating and therapeutic, kinda like how it was when she helped Blessing tend to her garden. Sort of a love hate thing but in an affectionate way.
On beautiful days like today, Holly Anne likes to take the carriage out and go to the meadow behind the daisy hill. I still remember the first time she took me along and I was mesmerized by the sights. The scenery’s still breathtaking, probably even more so than when I last saw it. I can see why Holly Anne wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. She has her whole world right here in the mountains.
Sometimes, all you have to do is watch a bunch of daisies sway in the wind, and for a moment, you feel at peace.
