merlin being so overwhelmed by everything he’s been put under, crumbling under the weight of destiny and being pulled in so many different directions he’s being torn apart, going to the one person who can offer him the most comfort out of everyone, his best friend, his other half. arthur who doesn’t realize whats happening until he turns and sees merlin’s desolate expression and tear filled eyes. merlin going “i know you are king (or prince) and you refuse to call me your friend, but you are mine and i really, really need my friend right now.” and before arthur can manage a word, merlin is stumbling forward into arthur’s arms and pulling him into a desperate hug, muffling his sobs as best he can but arthur can still feel the tears soaking his shoulder. arthur not asking any questions and just wrapping his arms around merlin while he breaks down.

but not in the way that’s depicted as the mc is ugly and one day becomes hot and finally gets their best friend’s brother’s interest— one thing about me is that i will ALWAYS be a hater on that version of the trope👹

instead it would be that merlin and morgana are childhood best friends, so he also grew up with arthur but they never really got close

the reason why is because arthur would either be mean or stand-offish when they were younger, but that was because he actually had a big crush on merlin but was just too shy

when they get older he’s much nicer to merlin but is still reserved around him since he doesn’t want morgana to know about how he feels bc that might make things awkward

merlin is unfortunately too oblivious to notice but he’s had a crush on arthur since the beginning of high school bc that’s when they actually started to get along

at some point i can imagine arthur being frustrated with his feelings and at least trying not to hold back around merlin

so then he’d do things like hand merlin his school sweatshirt during his soccer match

or when merlin’s tabby kilgharrah passes away arthur gets him a white kitten named aithusa

or arthur would find a book and give it to merlin because he thinks he’d like it and the book would have some of arthur’s annotations

but sweet merlin would be so oblivious and arthur is just like🕴️because even though he’s too scared to actually say anything he still thinks he’s being obvious enough
