for real WHERE does the idea that [utdr humans] are nongendered so that "you can project on them" come from. their literal character arcs are about NOT being a blank slate to be filled in by the audience

i think i understand the assumption on some level for undertale, because there is a very intentional effort to make you identify with the "player character" in order to make your choices feel like your own (the beating heart of undertale's metanarrative lies in giving you an alternative path to violence against its enemies after all, and whether you're still willing to persue it for your own selfish reasons. YOUR agency is crucial).

of course, the cardinal plot twist of the main ending sweeps the rug from under your feet on that in every way, and frisk's individuality becomes, in turn, a tool to further UT's OTHER main theme: completionism as a form of diegetic violence within the story. replaying the game would steal frisk's life and happy ending from them for our own perverse sentimentality, emotionally forcing our hand away from the reset button.

i think their neutrality absolutely aids in that immersion. but also, there's this weird attitude by (mostly) cis fans where it being functional within the story makes it... somehow "editable" and "up to the player" as well? which is gross and shows their ass on how they approach gender neutrality in general lol.

but also like. there's plenty of neutral, non PCharacters in undertale and deltarune. even when undertale was just an earthbound fangame and the player immersion metanarrative was completely absent, toby still described frisk as a "young, androgynous person". sometimes characters are just neutral by design. it's not that hard to understand lol.

anyone who makes this argument for kris deltarune is braindead. nothing else to say about it.

#this is a very difficult topic to discuss imo because on Some level I don't completely disagree with people who make that argument for chara #in SPIRIT. if not in action. like my point still stands characters can just Be neutral. and if that level of customization had been intended #well Pokemon's been doing the ''are you a boy or a girl'' shtick for ages. no reason why that couldn't have been included as well #but i do feel that we're supposed to identify with chara within the story. not as in chara is us but as in we are chara #and i think someone playing the game without outside interferences and (wrongly) coming to the conclusion that chara IS literally #themselves in the story. and thus call them by their own name (the one they likely inputted at the start) and pronouns #will be someone who grasped undertale's metanarrative more than someone who went in already spoiled on the NM route who thinks of chara #(and on some level frisk as well) as completely separate from us with independent wills and personhoods at any time #who treats them as nonbinary. even if their approach is more ''appropriate'' to a gender neutral person #systematic error vs manually changing every measure to fit what you already think is going to be the correct result. ykwim?#of course this opens a whole new parentheses while discussing the game outside of your personal experience #because even if you DO see chara as a self insert then they are a self insert for EVERYONE. women men genderqueer people #i don't call chara ''biscia'' even though that's what i named the fallen human in my playthrough. neither do i use they because i also do #if you're describing the character/story objectively in how they are executed then you're going to talk about them neutrally #because you ain't the only sunovabitch who played the darn game sonny #so like. either way you turn it. even in the most self insert reading you'd STILL logically use they/them so ¯⁠\⁠_⁠(⁠ツ⁠)⁠_⁠/⁠¯ git gud #answered asks

i think i officially set my sights on a therapist and i'll be contacting her very soon?? therapy was legitimately not on my 2024 bingo card (or in the cards for me at all) but here we are????

#this blog always had a focus on social science and detangling feelings and experiences. like it's basically been serving as my diary #bc this blog has always been my main outlet for it. i hate talking feelings to anyone irl. it's a bad habit but i hate it #so it was a game changer and helped me grow up sooo much. esp supplemented w other people's experiences.#being raised by a stoic engineer mother who's very much warm but also not very good at feelings at times has caused me to suppress SO much #compounded w being the eldest daughter. like that is a damning sentence in and of itself #tumblr just gave me an outlet for stuff like this. and every social media is essentially a highlight reel of ppl's best moments.#tumblr is the opposite. i've always loved that too whether it was in the form of humor or more earnest posts #could i work through my own issues by myself? yes probably #and my blog will always have that facet even if i get a therapist #but a therapist's input. just a professional's input. will expedite a lot of improvement for me i think #this has been a critical time period for me anyway bc i'm budgeting my whole schedule for once vs being handheld by uni deadlines #and it's just gonna keep getting more and more intense from here bc i'm truly pushing my comfort zone more than ever before #it just feels like the right call even tho i'm lowkey nervous ab it bc i HATE talking feelings in person.#this therapist will not fall for my trying to deflect by asking her about her life. which. usually works on my friends <3 #we will see. a therapy arc is coming very soon basically #p

I tried to mod something and the good news is, it didn't crash the game. 🥳 The bad news is, not what I was looking for lmao.

Like, don't get me wrong. I've seen way worse (the stuff of nightmares) on a modding channel I've been teaching myself this stuff lately, so. It's not like I completely fucked this thing up or anything like that.

It's just... I still gotta ask though.

What went wrong here?

#personal #my mods #(sort of kjdkd)#i was just lamenting this stuff on a fandom discord channel. saying i'm at my wits' end here and about to quit this shit #i tried following a tutorial on a modding channel and i got the whole thing working for the most part #he's sized correctly. animations seem to work. nothing is stretching apart from hair. the textures are all fucked up now but yeah #but because what i'm trying to do here is a little different than what that tutorial does #(they still keep pointing to that very same tutorial though)#it seems that either i did something wrong. maybe i skipped some important part?#(because one answer claimed if it's a model extracted from the same game it doesn't need to be rigged or weight-painted)#but then that video tutorial also says you need to separate some parts so that nothing's stretching etc.#which is obviously a thing that's happening above. that hair is in fact stretching. A LOT #i'm guessing because cloud and zack have different hair. so they must have different hair physics or something #but then. i also learned on that channel that zack doesn't have his own animations. because he's neither playable/non-playable #because he only appears in this one cutscene towards the end of the game. he has his own model and textures though #so i don't know whether that means he doesn't have his own physics either or...?#meaning i probably need to use another model's hair physics as well and somehow transfer them on zack's hair too or smth like that maybe #i don't know. i'm so confused #like i've put so much effort into this. so many retries already. i'm getting sick of the shaders input part actually lmao #and i'm so close but i'm stuck!#i tried asking for help on a modding channel but because my question didn't get answered in a couple of hours i chickened out and deleted i #and now i'm like i need help. i just don't know what i did wrong 🙈 i need strength and courage

logically i know hacking a 3DS won't be hard and it shouldn't require much but unfortunately ever since my battery bloated i am. Paranoid

#my first 3DS (the one who had a bloated battery) is REALLY old and every time it has a problem i loose 10 years off of my life #its got a bump on the back from the bloated battery. ive opened it back up like 2 times to make sure its ok. UGHHH #the second one is fine but its my only 3DS that can properly play DS games with the bottom touchscreen #my first one registers all touchscreen inputs to the top right corner with DS games #and ive heard that hacking it can cause that problem #so im not sure i wanna hack the second one #AND TO TOP IT ALL OFF i have TERRIBLE luck with electronics!!!!#so like yeah id probably be able to know what im doing but FUCK man im not sure if i wanna risk it #at this point I'm better off asking my mom to help me do this. she's fixed my 3DS before maybe she can help with this #mossball.txt #nintendo 3ds #3ds hacking #3ds homebrew

#wind howls #for the past like 22 hours i feel like ive felt every emotion on earth #right now im just sleepy though #sleepy... but im also soooo chilling #we used houdini for the first time today in class ! height fields sure are interesting... and the up to down nodes map is odd but fun !#although i definitely prefer using unreal as opposed to houdini simpy because building master materials and instances is so fun to me #yesterday the teacher showed us hue shift and my friend and i managed to build it so that the barrel we were testing our texture on-#has a switch that by default has the barrel shift through all the hues but you can turn it off to pick one specific hue #but its just one switch which automatically lets you access the specific hue you want #and this probably sounds like real baby shit to seasoned unreal users but to me it was so impressive and fun...#especially bc i managed to make it so when the switch is on it had a sub setting to choose the speed at which the hue shifts #but when its off the sub setting automatically changes to make it possible to input a specific number associated with the desired hue #which is not something my friend did ! i figured that out myself ! i am very proud of it !!!#although it may be poorly optimised... im gonna ask the teacher if theres an easier way to make the switch thatd be simpler to use #im really liking my video game preproduction class heehehe #and actually ive really been enjoying rigging as well #its a challenge ! and my god its so much to remember at once but its like. a really fun puzzle so far #although were like half a month in so my opinion may change as the assignments roll in #but so far. i like it. yay :)
