lee dohyun. 30. cis man. he/him. ┊┊ YOON TAEJOON “TJ”, better known as agent THOR has been with cerberus corp as an eo since 2018 and is LEVEL III . FALL DUE TO HARNESS MALFUNCTION  has gifted them POWERED FORM, though LACK OF UNDERSTANDING OF THE FORM EXCESSIVE NOSEBLEEDS AND TIREDNESS  has also been noted. when they aren’t protecting the tri-state area, they are fond of FIREFIGHTING & LINE DANCING and are never seen without FIREFIGHTER BADGE WALLET WITH A PICTURE OF HIS FAMILY. civilians think they are HELPFUL  & CHARMING, but some of the other agents see them as STUBBORN & IMPULSIVE. cerberus corp should consider the fact that their last mission status was ALMOST SUCCESSFUL BUT FOCUSED MORE ON THE CIVILIANS RATHER THAN THE CULPRIT when giving out the next one. ┊┊ min. she/her. 28. est.

002.  EXTRA ORDINARY
the questions here for each section are suggestions to get you thinking. as long as the section is appropriately elaborated upon, you’re fine!
near death experience…
Tw: Fire
“It’s been an honor to serve Station 23.”
October 13, 2017.
There was a fire swallowing the apartment building he and his then fiance lived in. Despite the missed calls about not being a hero, TJ sprang into action. It was the love of his life and he couldn’t forgive himself if they died without him there on their side. Up the tenth floor they were approaching the fire escape. TJ grabbed their fiance close and knew their odds were grim. It was hang on to the slowly deteriorating rope or swing onto the fire escape . Choosing the later TJ did what he could to guide his fiance near the escape  but the fire was too strong and the threads holding the harness gave in. He remembered the last few words before his heart stopped from the shock as he fell.
“Let me live so I can protect others.”
power…
Powers: Powered Form.
“Holy shit what’s in the sky!”
The user can enter or leave a powered state of being an advance form where one transforms their physical body into a superpowered version of themselves, having their bodies empowered and changed into superior levels with advance powers, ability and new appearance befitting the nature of their new form with possibly new gear, weapons, costume or armors that their forms inherent in their transformations.
In TJ’s case it is a powered suit which is activated through danger and in cases of courage. TJ doesn’t understand the full scope beyond believing someone is in danger and being a civilian won’t help the circumstances. Also screaming GO! sometimes works but the probability is that it only works with someone he really cares about. His ability harnesses the suit that protects him and a double sided mallet on the side of his coat when he died.
Major different between his and his brothers power is it’s more emotional oriented and the materials spawned. TJ’s brashness fueling his own power
drawbacks / vulnerabilities…
Weaknesses
Lack of understanding of the form- To put it simply TJ is still unsure about the ability itself. All he knows is that he was to be very courageous, fall out a window to recreate the adrenaline running through him, or someone he can really care about. What he doesn't understand is the balance of courage and a clear mind to truly utilize his power. Visualizing the mallet, having a strategy that isn’t brute force offense, and essentially anything that perhaps a level 1 cerb agent would know  but does not apply to him. TJ firmly still sees himself as a firefighter who happens to be Thor instead of  as Thor,  someone who protects all regardless of being a firefighter.
Nosebleeds- due to the nature of adrenaline and blood running through his systems post transformation/ power down his nose will bleed a lot. Has to get treated to mild symptoms. Is at risk of having a syncope episode from blood loss.
Tiredness- depending on how long he was morphed, he will be tired for that amount plus an hour post power down. It has affected him to the point he had to switch shifts just to fully recover. He’s now on float/rotating which ends up being him on more backup stuff and more administrative stuff which on one hand works towards his recent promotion as fire captain. But can seem less than appealing to cerberus themselves.
Vulnerabilities:
People/Civilians- he tends to have more of a bleeding heart towards civilians then the villains who should be stopped. He believes every life counts first then the culprit. Which discussed above is great if you're a firefighter but sucky for your numbers as an agent.
His brother- Despite their vast differences, beliefs about civilians and the like. TJ truly looks up to his brother. They grew up together and probably knows deep down he was a burden to his brother but will always cheer for him
The pending decision he has to make- to be a marshall or to be a hero. Lost potential for him or not? He kinda fears of becoming something he’s not and doing nothing
(if applicable)  cerberus corp…
It was at a low point. He called his brother about the truth that happened the last few months in 2017, telling how his engagement failed and nothing feels the same and this weird power he has. He couldn’t remember his brother’s response beyond the words auditioning for cerberus. He was confused and read about the audition. His video was just him nervously looking around before saying firmly I want to be a hero. That’s all I can do. Before letting himself briefly disappear from the window and appear up again and maybe showing off what he got. His video did accidentally get cut short because his neighbors knocked on the door and he frantically de morphed to get the door. Somehow by some miracle he was accepted and his initiation mission went successfully (saving an elderly man out of harms way from a burning zamboni is child's play for a firefighter). But he couldn’t help but wonder if it was a coincidence or something else…for now he just wants to be a hero and a firefighter. Even if both sides say it's impossible to keep both jobs without wearing himself out.
Being level 3 for right now is his best way of putting his feet in both doors and for once trying to make that decision
codename…
Really awkward talk with a cerb agent and his friends. The guys at the department said please don't pull us into it. And Double Mallet Man was sadly rejected so Thor was the compromise. I guess he kinda sparkles like thor or something
003.  EXTRA
In this video essay I will talk about cart- I mean taejun the technically less spoken about yoon sibling who was like whats the point of riches if it isnt shared and yeah his life calling was firefighter since he get saved once in a drill
obviously the type who keeps his friends close and his enemies at least fifty yeards away
Knows some emergency words in foreign languages because his firefighter exams
Is a newly minted captain because like three retired so the spot was open and theres like....15 people in the department so yeah hes not loosing his job
Likes country music and the simpler things, would love to be a competitive dancer but he already gotta deal with that one decision above
When he parts his hair and at certain angled he kinda looks like his brother but not enough for someone to call him loveshot yet
In fact he hasn't been called thor either the guy's power form looks like this . I I guess you could see him transform because the window jumping but i hope you got a good hd camera and vision insurance
So connections:
Friends
Cerb agents that like him and wish he can around more
People whose cats he might have saved ( which believe me can be a lot)
A civilian, unaffilated, etc who put two and two together and figured out his identity
Someone who secretly likes Thor (the hero form) because Thor saved them one time but scoffs at the idea and hilarity ensues if they met TJ and think he's a nerd. (i want this because he needs something good and funny like this) and just become close or something

Once upon a time in a lively forest nestled between rolling hills and a sparkling river, the animals had grown tired of the same old debates about who ate what. The omnivores insisted that eating bugs was "totally fine," the herbivores were staunch in their salad superiority, and the carnivores… well, they had a tendency to make everyone a little uneasy.
It was into this cacophony of culinary chaos that a newcomer arrived: Tofu the Bunny. Tofu had an unusual talent—she could whip up the most mouthwatering meals using nothing but plants. Carrots transformed into bacon-like strips, mushrooms became juicy burgers, and potatoes… oh, Tofu's potato wedges were the stuff of legend.
“Who needs to eat anyone else,” she would say, “when you can eat this?” She’d then present a plate of her latest creation, leaving everyone—carnivores included—in awe.
A Meeting of the Mouths
One sunny morning, Tofu decided to call a forest-wide meeting. She stood atop a tree stump in the clearing, holding a sign that read, "Plant-Powered Potluck: Come Hungry!"
“Listen up, friends!” she announced, her fluffy tail wiggling with excitement. “Today, I’m hosting a potluck, and the only rule is: no one gets eaten.”
The herbivores cheered. The omnivores raised their eyebrows. The carnivores grumbled.
“What’s the point of a potluck without steak?” grumbled Boris the Bear, licking his chops.
“Oh, Boris,” Tofu replied with a grin. “I’ve made something for you. Just wait.”
The Big Reveal
When the animals arrived at the potluck later that day, they found a spread that would make even the pickiest eater’s eyes widen. There was jackfruit barbecue, lentil meatballs, cashew cheese dips, and a towering chocolate cake made with—gasp—avocados.
“This looks... different,” said Paula the Panther, eyeing a plate of tofu wings suspiciously.
“Try it,” Tofu urged. “What’s the worst that could happen?”
Paula gingerly took a bite. Her eyes widened, her tail twitched, and she growled—a good growl. “This tastes... amazing! How did you do this?”
“Secret recipes,” Tofu said with a wink. “But the main ingredient is love—for food and for all of us.”
A Crisis Averted
Just as the party hit its peak, a commotion erupted. Gary the Goose, notorious for his terrible timing, had stumbled into the clearing with alarming news. “The humans are coming! And they’re bringing grills!”
Panic ensued.
“Everyone, hide!” yelled Percy the Porcupine, diving into a bush.
But Tofu had other ideas. “No, we’ll show them the power of plants! Follow my lead.”
Cooking for Change
When the humans arrived, they were greeted not by frightened animals but by the smell of sizzling plant-based burgers. Tofu and her friends had set up a full buffet. Signs read, “Try This Instead!” and “Meat-Free Magic.”
Curious and hungry, the humans took a bite. One by one, their expressions shifted from skepticism to delight.
“This is delicious,” one of them said, wiping barbecue sauce from his chin. “What is it?”
“Plants,” Tofu said simply. “No harm, all flavor.”
Happily Ever After
From that day forward, the humans started coming to the forest not to hunt but to learn from Tofu and her friends. The animals, in turn, became the world’s first vegan culinary instructors. Tofu even published a cookbook titled Leaf It to Me: Plant-Based Recipes for Everyone.
And so, the forest thrived. The animals no longer argued about who ate what, because they all agreed: nothing tasted better than a meal made with kindness.
As for Tofu, she became a legend. Her message was clear: eating plants didn’t just save lives—it brought everyone closer together. And isn’t that what a good meal is all about?
(This story was written by ChatGPT, your friendly AI assistant, with the goal of spreading laughter and a positive vegan message. Eat plants, be kind, and don’t forget to share the potato wedges.)

Red and blue light flooded the docks. It was a clear signal to stay away, unless you happened to be a snooping journalist or a simple troublemaker. Gabe hoped he wouldn't have to deal with either of those tonight, but he kept the taser and tranquilizer close at hand. The latter was actually meant for the Kappa, something like a crossover between Edward Scissorhands and a small crocodile, if the description was to be trusted. He would see soon enough for himself, and then maybe he would wish he had been given desk-duty instead.
The escaped animals were the responsibility of the witches, but they couldn't be everywhere all the time. Instead, they had asked for help from the community, and the dutifully serving special branch of the VCPD. Gabe had been answering calls all week, following up on leads and securing several creatures for the witches to take care of. He had been lucky to get help most times, because without any superhuman strength or magical powers, it was a struggle to catch even the smallest pixie. When he approached the pompous yacht and its owner, something told him he might not be getting so lucky this time. With sure steps and even breathing he walked, bracing himself for the meeting with the notorious vampire.
"Good evening, Mr Vörös," Gabe greeted politely, despite the spite bubbling up inside him. He hadn't had to deal with Izak Vörös personally more than a couple of times, but his presence was as difficult to stand as the pressing smell of gasolene. The memory of the 'bunnies' he had brought to the potluck just months ago was still etched to Gabe's retinas. He hated the powerlessness that made him feel. If it hadn't posed a threat to humans, Gabe would have gladly let the Kappa pester the vampire until he fled the city altogether. "I was told you have an unwanted visitor. I'm here to take it off your hands," he nodded towards the yacht, "Would you mind showing me where you last saw it?"
Tumblr media
where: the shipyard with: @gabe-moore 𓇼 - - - - - - - - 🩸 - - - - - - - - 𓇼 𓇼 - - - - - - - - 🩸 - - - - - - - - 𓇼 Izak noticed the ugly beast prowling around and under his yacht a few days ago. It had skin the color of algae and an alien turtle-like face, and the creature offended Izak so much that he had taken up throwing his empty bottles or rocks at it like a child would a neighbor's foul dog. He had to give it credit, though. It was quick, darting back into the waters and then re-emerging to stare at the vampire with a nasty look.
He would call it names, landing on vandamál skrímslis, or deformed brute in his mothertongue. It didn't seem to recognize the word, but it could decipher his tone. The vandamál skrímslis would hiss back at him, a gargled sound that reminded him of drowning victims.
But as the days wore on, it was apparent that the creature had made the yacht hull its homestead, and Izak quickly grew bored of it. What fun was it to torment something that had no will to fight him? Of course it recognized him as a superior, and anything living would always choose its life over risking death. Despite this, it was becoming bothersome, as the vampire rented out his yacht for parties or to pathetic social media whores who wanted to fake their followers into thinking they made it. He would have left it be if it wasn't for the fact that he knew of the escaped creatures and how they tended to feast on unsuspecting humans, and he didn't need the police to sniff around his boat should the vandamál skrímslis decide to take its vengeance out on lesser lifeforms.
So, Izak did the responsible thing and called in to have the thing captured. Interestingly enough, he was expecting to be met with one of Elijah's coven members or even one of the handy, altruistic deities to meet him, but when Izak saw that it was the human cop he liked to check in on every now and again, he was rightly chuffed. "Evening, officer," he said, dropping his dying cigarette and crushing it under his toes. "My yacht and I are in dire need of rescuing."

ENA THEORY - POWER OF POTLUCK.
"What's the meaning of.. FUN?"
This abstract nonsense world of the internet that never ceases to amaze us.. We all know how fun it is to make ENA HCs and theories! ENA is one of those things that's as written super vague so everyone gets something different out of it & the story is often unimportant if it even exists. I believe that deep inside there's some logic through implications and only. You have to think outside the box and more conventionally to get something out of it n I just love to hyperanalyze content that has hidden or no lore. I think I'd be cool to share my own take on some stuff. In today's episode…. ba dum tssss I wanna discuss about the meaning behind the latest episode: Power of potluck. Like, the meaning behind the "joy" roaming throughout the entire thing. First of all. This episode seems to be the biggest source of the real meaning of emotions and the life on this universe. The "implications" are also pretty much forward, the straight-up Therapy thing took me aback pretty much LMAO- u just don't see this showcasing style of deep significances in the ENA series at all. Anyhow, let's start! 1) THE NAME MEANING:
Potluck is apparently a food gathering where many people eat at. This has a strange connection with BBQ. Idk yet why Joel decides to connect ENA with dishes n such. However, just like I said before about "Potluck", people enjoy and share food with others. In the ENA episode everyone tries to support ENAs journey to the " Fun" with any way they can, one giving her instructions, other dancing… They have that sort of positive connection, just like in Potlucks! :]
2) THE MASKING
While the while journey of ENA searching for the "Fun", you see her having a mask stuck on her blue side's face. The sad side is neutrally negative, low-down, sad, pitiful n such. The mask THOUGH is more of silly, hyper, and a sneaky lil goober. Jokes aside, we all know how much ENA dislikes her emotions, especially her blue side's. The mask, full of not necessarily happy emotions, but enough to mask such gloominess, works as a replacement for her sad side. However, one can't mask it all forever and you eventually can't hold it inside at some point. That's where ENA got sensitive again when she got rid of the mask, and couldn't bottle up her emotions anymore.
Near the end, the therapist finally gives us an answer for the "Fun": "The greatest of fun can be found in the little moments." So, what's the meaning of the "Fun"..? In other words, enjoy the moment of the small, joyful things. Go have some fun with your friends, chill a bit, do something you enjoy. Even if you don't have the respect from others, the luxuries and the fame, you better enjoy the little things. These are what are worth in life. Pretty much similar with irl, ain't it?… Despite ENA being surreal, it's never far away from reality.
… That's all guys :] Hope you liked it. Here I also put some lil things from other theories that I liked, so credt to them as well lol :]

A Family Gathering
[M.B. is my Cadetsona OC, Shelley is my Sam and Max fanchild OC, M.J. belongs to @sleepy-heads-blog, and Sean and Nyarly belong to @drusb]
Note: This takes place after "A Day at the Diner" and before "Cadet's First Case".
---
Shelley: "Big brother, look!"
[With a toothy grin, Shelley lifts up a long centipede from underneath a rock. M.J. turns around to see her shaking it with glee.]
M.J.: "Oooh, that's a big one! Good job, Shelley!"
[Shelley squeaks happily and proceeds to eat the centipede, which makes a slight crunchy sound. M.J. smiles and leans onto the porch fence, looking out onto the neighborhood. The Commissioner had given Sam and Max a day off since there were no cases to be found. So in order to celebrate that sometimes-rare occasion, they invited family and friends over. M.J. could hear the commotion from inside the house; their laughter muffled by the walls. He could join them, but he was waiting for someone. He watches out towards the right side of the road patiently. Shelley looks up, climbs up the fence, and sits right on the edge next to M.J.]
M.J.: "I think you're gonna like Miss M.B. She's a really nice lady."
Shelley: "Miss... M...B...?"
M.J.: "Uh-huh. She is Dad and Papa's Cadet for the Freelance Police. Miss M.B. is our friend and she has these really cool powers that make all sorts of things appear."
[Shelley tilts her head, her ears flopping to one side. M.J. reaches out and lifts her up, carrying her like a small baby.]
M.J.: "I definitely think she'll really like you."
[Suddenly, a horn is heard. It's the DeSoto, pulling up into the front parking lot. M.J. knew what that meant.]
M.J.: "Dad! Papa! Miss M.B.!"
Sam: "Hey, son! Hey, Shelley!"
Max: "Hello, my little critters!"
[Coming out of the backseat is M.B., dressed in much nicer clothing than she wore before. A long, black, sheer kimono drapes over a soft tank top and a long black skirt, which is covered in coffin patterns. Her jewelry were a mix of spiked bracelets and several Anhks on her necklace and earrings. Over her eyes are a pair of magenta tea shades. Her dirty blonde hair is hanging loose around her shoulders, revealing her shaved hair on the right side of her head. Her boots were black leather with a touch of heel to them.]
M.B.: "Hey, lil' dude! How's it going?"
M.J.: "Miss M.B., you're here!"
[M.J. runs up to receive a big hug from M.B.]
M.B.: "Aw, did you miss me?" *gasps* "And who is this?"
M.J.: "Oh! This is Shelley, our new baby sister."
M.B.: "Awwww, she's so precious! Hi there, Shelley. It's nice to meet you."
[Shelley looks up at M.B., almost shying away. She then returns the smile. M.B. giggles.]
Sam: "Well, the rest of the family's inside, so let's not keep 'em waiting, shall we?"
[Sam wraps his arms around the two and heads up towards the entrance. They all enter inside and in the living room sits Sean and Nyarly in a couch playing Mortal Kombat while Geek and John watches.]
Sean: "Oh hey, you're back!"
Geek: "Hi, M.B.!"
M.B.: "Hey Geek."
[M.B. waves and smiles. But deep down inside, she still cannot help but feel terrible about breaking her heart over at the Diner. Even if everything has been patched up afterwards.]
Nyarly: "God, stop picking Scorpion! Choose someone else for once!"
Sean: "I do better with Scorpion, he's my main! It's not my fault you're a noob at this game."
Nyarly: "Alright, Noob Saibot it is. Let's go!"
M.B.: "Ooooh, Mortal Kombat! I love this game!"
[She goes to sit down alongside Geek and John. M.J. joins and Shelley goes over to Sam and climbs up onto his back.]
Shelley: "Father!"
Sam: "Hehe, hey there, sweetie. Father loves you too. Wanna help me with tonight's dinner? Come on. To the kitchen!"
[Sam rushes into the kitchen, giving Shelley a piggy back ride. She squeals in delight, giggling all the way. Max follows the two. The rest of the family sits and watches Sean and Nyarly battle it out on Mortal Kombat. Scorpion vs. Noob Saibot. Fighting to the death in the main tournament stage.]
Nyarly: "Oh, come on!"
Sean: *smirks*
Nyarly: "Are you spamming the special move button?!"
Sean: ".... maybe."
Nyarly: "Well, two can play at that game."
[Noob Saibot successfully dodges Scorpion's attack and perfectly lands a combo move. Soon an x-ray vision appears on the screen, revealing every graphic detail of Scorpion's bones being broken into bits. This brings his health bar all the way down.]
Nyarly: "HA!"
Sean: "What?!"
[Then the moment of truth. A voice booms, "FATALITY!" Nyarly quickly presses in the buttons and immediately Noob Saibot begins his fatality. Sean looks on in utter defeat as Scorpion gets brutally slaughtered by the hands of his opponent. M.B. claps.]
M.B.: "Well done, Nyarly!"
Nyarly: "Hey, M.B., wanna join?"
M.B.: "Oh hell yeah. Although I am a bit rusty, I must admit. Been a while since I played this game."
Nyarly: "Ah, don't worry... I'll go easy on you."
M.B.: "Is that a challenge?"
Nyarly: "....maybe."
M.B.: "Oh-kay then, let's go."
[Sean gives the controller to M.B. and switch seats. Nyarly picks Noob Saibot again. M.B. picks Mileena.]
Sean: "Oh, Mileena?"
M.B.: "Yeah, she's one of my favorites. Both beauty and beast."
[After picking a stage, the fight begins. Noob Saibot begins to win until Mileena manages to bring his health down by a landslide. Round One ends with Mileena's victory.]
M.B.: "Yes!"
Nyarly: "Ah, that was just beginner's luck!"
M.B.: "Heh... How's that denial working for ya?"
[Sean and Geek 'ooooh's and laughs. Nyarly slowly turns to M.B.]
Nyarly: "Wow, smart-ass." *chuckles* "Alright, no more Mr. Nice Guy."
[Round Two begins. Noob Saibot brings out the big guns and completely decimates Mileena.]
M.B.: "Ah sh*t!"
Geek: "You got this, M.B.!"
M.J.: "Last round!"
[The final round begins and it becomes intense. M.B. slams her buttons with all her might as Nyarly presses every combo he can remember. Eventually, Mileena manages to get an x-ray combo on Noob Saibot.]
M.B.: "YEAH!"
Nyarly: "Don't jinx yourself now!"
[This brings down Noob Saibot's health bar. Now both health bars are almost at equal amounts. Nyarly dodges Mileena's attack and gets an x-ray combo on her. M.B.'s competitiveness comes out and desperately slams the buttons even more. This leads to both characters almost dying. Just a few hits and one of them is done for.]
Sean: "Oh damn..."
Geek: "Who's it gonna be?"
M.J.: "Oh, so close!"
[Mileena makes an attempt to dodge and hit Noob Saibot with a combo attack, but wasn't quick enough. FATALITY!]
Nyarly: "Looks like I win again."
Sean: "You were so close, M.B.!"
M.B.: *chuckles* "I know!"
Nyarly: "That was a really good fight, though. You did pretty good. Alright, who's next?"
M.J.: "Oh, oh, oh, me! Me! Me!"
[M.B. hands over the controller and switches seats. Another battle begins, this time between Raiden and Kitana. Suddenly, the doorbell rings.]
Geek: "I got it!"
[Geek opens the door. Standing in front of the entrance is another family member.]
Geek: *gasps* "Granny!"
Granny Ruth: "Hello, dearie!" *hugs Geek* "I hope I wasn't late."
Geek: "Not at all. We're just getting started. Come on in!"
M.J. and John: "Granny Ruth!"
[Nyarly pauses the game and allows M.J. to join in on the group hug. Granny Ruth is immediately showered with affection by her great grandchildren. Sam and Max come out of the kitchen and greet her as well. Granny Ruth looks over to see M.B.]
Granny Ruth: "Ah, you must be the new Cadet my grandson has been telling me about. Why, it's so good to finally see you, dearie!"
M.B.: "Pleasure to meet you, ma'am."
Granny Ruth: "Oh, please, no need for formalities. You can just call me 'Granny'." *smiles*
[Granny Ruth reaches out for a hug and M.B. accepts it. M.B. has heard so many good things about Granny Ruth from Sam and Max. Amazing things, in fact. So much so that getting permission to just call her 'Granny' felt like the highest of honor. M.B. has family back home, so of course she would never forget them. But at this very moment, M.B. felt like she belonged. Like she was wanted.]
Max: "You're just in time, Granny Ruth! We just finished fixing up dinner. Just head right into the kitchen and help yourselves out!"
[Everyone headed into the kitchen and was greeted to a whole potluck dinner. The entire room smells delicious, making M.B.'s mouth water. After everyone got their plates and their meals, they all sat down together and ate. Soon M.B. learns that Sam and Max's family were anything but "normal." Boisterous laughter erupted as conversations began turning into jokes. M.B. felt more and more comfortable with them, for all of this was very familiar to her. Her own family were full of funny people, especially her uncle. As she was getting really comfortable sitting in silence, watching everyone chat, a question gave her quite the surprise.]
M.J.: "Oh, Miss M.B.! Can you show us your powers after dinner?"
Granny Ruth: "Powers?"
Sam: "The kid has illusionary abilities. She can make things appear out of thin air."
Max: "I think she's some sort of witch or something."
M.J.: "Yeah, she once defended me from a bully once. Come on, Miss M.B.! Please~?"
M.B.: "Oh, uh... sure! Sorry, you just caught me off guard. Wasn't expecting it, that's all. I'll think of something after dinner."
M.J.: "Yay!"
[The spotlight has fallen upon M.B. She always hated stuff like this, having other people ask for her to do or perform something. Despite having an immense interest in theater, she wasn't one to always try to attract attention. Especially when the spotlight is forced upon her. However, this was different - an exception, because how could anyone resist an adorable little bunny in a sweater? When dinner was finished, everyone gathered outside in the backyard as M.B. walks further from them, making the entire lot her stage. She checks her phone for Wi-Fi and searches up some music. M.B. finally picks a song: "Dance with the Dragon" by Dark Sarah. As it begins to play, she focuses in on her powers. The purple and green aura emerges from her hands and evoke a wondrous scene. A decadent ballroom lit with multiple candles where a young lady in a black gown is captured by well-dressed gentleman, who is a dragon in disguise. The lyrics begin to sing.]
Lyrics:
[DRAGON:]
🎶I know why you're here, don't try to escape my dear, you've been naughty I know by trying to steal something of my own🎶 [DARK SARAH:] 🎶I have no idea, why I have been dragged down here...🎶 [DRAGON:] 🎶Don't lie!🎶 [DARK SARAH:] 🎶...Nor what you're talking about, and sir there's no reason to shout!🎶 [DRAGON:] 🎶And sure there's a reason to shout!🎶 [DARK SARAH:] 🎶I saw the key but didn't steal!🎶 [DRAGON:] 🎶You saw the key and tried to steal!🎶 [DRAGON:] I see... What do we have here?
[DARK SARAH:] What?... nothing... [DRAGON:] 🎶Now I know why you're here, you are a mischievous thief,🎶 [DARK SARAH:] 🎶... just can't lie to him...🎶 [DRAGON:] 🎶But if you want the key, you need to earn it my my dear!🎶 [DARK SARAH:] 🎶He sees right through me, oh bugger! He just..🎶 [DRAGON:] 🎶This is how we treat our guests who are trying to cheat, you need to earn it my dear!🎶 [DARK SARAH:] 🎶...took the only ticket I had, I guess I have to🎶 [DRAGON:] 🎶so you will be my rag doll tonight, tonight,🎶
[DARK SARAH:] 🎶see where this leads🎶 [DRAGON:] 🎶At the dragon's ball!🎶
[The lady and the Dragon then begin to dance.] [DARK SARAH & DRAGON:] 🎶Take my all, I surrender, surrender! Look at me and the way I ask for forgiveness, kindness and help! Take my all, I surrender, surrender! You/I will die another day, another way🎶 [DARK SARAH:] I think we're done now [DRAGON:] You think so? [DARK SARAH:] ...I have to go! [DRAGON:] 🎶You're not going anywhere!🎶 [DARK SARAH:] 🎶Why are you, making this🎶
[DRAGON:] 🎶You don't know...🎶 [DARK SARAH:] 🎶...Harder than it is?🎶 [DRAGON:] 🎶I cry on my own...🎶 [DARK SARAH:] 🎶You have the key,🎶 [DRAGON:] 🎶In this lonely place...🎶 [DARK SARAH:] 🎶That you don't even need🎶 [DRAGON:] 🎶That is why...🎶 [DARK SARAH:] 🎶You're standing here between me and my life.🎶 [DRAGON:] 🎶...I'm standing here between you and your life!🎶 [DARK SARAH:] 🎶...I'm sorry to say...🎶 [DRAGON:] 🎶What now?🎶
[DARK SARAH:]
🎶...just get off with your tail!🎶 🎶Hahhah!!!🎶 [DARK SARAH & DRAGON:] 🎶Take my all, I surrender, surrender! Look at me and the way I ask for forgiveness, kindness and help! Take my all, I surrender, surrender! You/I will die another day, another way🎶
[Then M.B. morphs the scene into a beautiful garden. This is the dragon's backstory, where he was once happy. There with him is his bride, who looks very similar to the lady.] [DARK SARAH & DRAGON:] 🎶Nannannannanna, Leoleolelee!🎶 [DRAGON:] 🎶May I have this dance?🎶 [DARK SARAH:] 🎶Aaaah!🎶 [DARK SARAH & DRAGON:] 🎶Nannannannanna, Leoleolelee!🎶 [DRAGON:] 🎶I will show you my best moves...🎶 [DARK SARAH:] 🎶Aaaah, you best moves...🎶
[The flashback fades and the scene returns to the present.] [DRAGON:] 🎶... Why don't you?🎶 [DARK SARAH:] 🎶I just need the key, I'm trying to get out of here I know that it's a bad deal And disappointed you must feel But please help me to escape🎶 [DARK SARAH & DRAGON:] 🎶Take my all, I surrender, surrender! Look at me and the way I ask for forgiveness, kindness and help! Take my all, I surrender, surrender! You/I will die another day, another way Look at me and the way I ask for Forgiveness, kindness and help! Take my all, I surrender, surrender! We will die another day, another way... another way...another way...another day...another way...! 🎶
[M.B. ends her illusionary show. The whole family goes into a roaring applauds, cheering at the amazing spectacle.]
M.J.: "THAT WAS AWESOME!!!"
Geek: "Dude!"
Shelley: *happy bat squeaks*
Granny Ruth: "Well I'll be... I've never seen such a wonderful show since I was a little girl. You, dearie, have such a wonderful gift."
M.B.: "Thanks, Granny. Thank you all so very much!"
[Sam leans over and nudges Max.]
Sam: *whispering* "You know, little buddy, she can make quite a difference when it comes to cases."
Max: *whispering back* "You mean like making mushy fairy tales while blasting musical numbers from her phone?"
Sam: "I mean as our Cadet, pinhead! Imagine all the things she could do for the law!"
Max: "I dunno, Sam... is she even prepared to get smacked down by a bunch of hardened criminals? 'Cause she's giving me theater kid vibes, as the youth put it."
[Sam and Max watch as M.B. is surrounded by the rest of the family. M.B. is receiving hugs and pats on the back. She even lifts and hold Shelley in her arms, creating a tiny blue butterfly for her to marvel at. It lands on her nose, tickling her.]
Sam: "Heh... let's find out, shall we?"

Incorrect Batfam Quarantine Quotes From Things My Fam Has Said In The Past Month(s) Part 3
Part 1 / Part 2
Dick: My dragon name is Snack Stealer. - Bruce: Are you being considerate? Damian: No, I'm being practical. - Duke: Hunting sounds boring. It sounds like fishing, but with guns. - Jason: This is one of my defining character traits. Drama defines me. I am drama. - Dick: Damian, remember, you pick it up and ask "Does this bring me joy?" Damian:... Dick: And then you... ? Damian: Throw it out. - Tim: The world deserves to hold baby bunnies...But humanity doesn't. - Bruce: Know thy enemy, and know yourself. Tim: They're the same. - Dick: There are so many cool people at the shore. During the day you don't see them, 'cause they're at the beaches. But at night, they come out: The GAYS. - Duke: I thought we were trying not to kill the grass in the vegetable garden. Alfred: You can kill whatever you want in the garden, so long as it isn't the veggies. Duke: Okay, Tim Vs Damian, in the garden! - Tim: There's no social obligation if you're part of the void. - Steph: Have outlets always been like this? *Referring to how one slot is longer than the other* - Bruce: Tim is using the quarantine as an excuse for procrastination. Duke: Yeah, he is, but so am I. - Bruce: Sorry, I got caught up reading stoic philosophy. Steph: Do Stoics have potlucks? 'Cause I feel like if you're going to choose a spiritual orientation, they should have potlucks. - Damian: Can I kick you? Jason: No! You already kicked me, and now my good butt cheek feels bruised. - Dick: I'm not alluding to anyone in this room right now, because that would be a little mean, but— - Jason, to Dick: Oh, you're still here? Tim: Dick was just packing the car, Jason. He wouldn't leave without saying goodbye, he's not you. - Dick: Are we even out of the 90's yet? Steph: Maybe 2020 is the exclamation point on the 90's. - Alfred: Damian is missing his birth certificate. Duke: He was never born, he was hatched. - Kate: The military put me through college. Steph: The military was your sugar daddy. - Jason, to Tim: Tell me if this hurts you, don't make any noise. - Tim: 2020 feels like my junior year of high school is happening on a global scale. - Jason: I've gotten into the awful habit of using heavy power tools in pajamas with no shoes on. - Bruce, DMing a D&D session for the family: Today we learned that the boring strategy works, the deinonychus always wins, and if you take your turn to deal a little extra damage instead of running, you could fall down a 50ft hole unconscious.

Days Gone By
6
Houston. The biggest city in the state of Texas and the second largest in the country. But more intimately, it was the home of Billie Ford. She was known well throughout the countryside of Houston and even into the inner city as the kid that went the extra mile. A star runner on the high school track team, destined to make state. The friendly mechanic that willingly made house trips and sometimes took a hot meal as payment. The devoted wife and mother, the lively younger sister known for her exuberant energy. The street she lived on for more than half a decade was once known for it’s exuberant energy too; music bumping from almost every open window and a potluck every other week. It was now a decrepit wasteland. One of the first cities to fall when the virus broke and when it fell, it fell hard.
Every inch of public road was cluttered with debris, abandoned cars, streaks of blood and dead bodies - roaming or not. Music would not be heard on these streets ever again - unless you chose to count the mindless humming from Billie every now and again. Despite how sparse supplies had grown, Billie couldn’t bring herself to leave. Having already abandoned her once warm, loving home, she was now holed up in a strangers house on the other side of the city. Boarded up, furniture pushed against windows and a makeshift bed of sheets and couch cushions positioned messily in the center of the living room. Yet she couldn’t bring herself to call it quits, no matter how ghostly it had gotten in the last few months. Something was keeping her here, and she just couldn’t describe what it was.
(six months since the fall)
“How long will you be?”
Despite his name, Hunter Hammond was no scavenger. He was a meek man, all five-foot-nine of him. Abraham used to tease him when their families got together for a dinner, joking that Billie had managed to fuse her bisexuality and marry both a man and woman all in one. Hunter never liked Abraham too much.
“I’ll be as quick as I can but who knows what those streets look like now.” Billie tightened the laces of her boots before standing and slinging a backpack over her shoulder. Just behind Hunter, their son Devin played with plastic cars in their couch cushion bed. His smile and bubbly laugh was a constant reminder of what the world had been once, and for both Billie and Hunter it gave them hope.
Billie cupped her husband’s cheek, pressing a tender kiss to his lips. “Back before sundown. I promise. C’mere sweet boy,” she kneeled down and kissed her toddler on the head, breathing in the scent of his cloud-like curls. “You take care of your ol’ man for me, m’kay?” The boy smiled and nodded.
“Board this right back up.” She gave Hunter a stern look as she moved the furniture from the back door, their backyard a quiet enough escape to the road behind them. “I mean it. The second I’m out.”
“Don’t worry, I got you. Come back to me safe, Bill. I mean that.”
Hunter had shut the door before she could give him a second look, the sound of the couch scraping on the other side signaling she was now trapped on the back porch. She took off down the patio stairs, through the neighboring backyards and through the small line of trees that shielded the house from from the main road.
Billie liked to call them walkers. They reminded her of how her dad used to walk when he had knee surgery and ended up with a walking frame for a few weeks; hunched over, slow, lazy. Her father was an intimidating man - strong and stern, a frequent yeller who, just by cracking the buckle of his belt, had Billie stood straight and ready to accomplish any command. But even Abraham Sr. didn’t scare her as much as those things did. Her father could be reasoned with if you showed him enough respect; they could not. The howls of sorrow trapped inside distant memory disturbed her more than when they ran her way, jaws chomping and drooling for a taste of human flesh. Something she had only seen in her brother’s horror movies, and even those couldn’t prepare her for the sights she had seen. It was the humanity lost somewhere within them - that’s what terrified her. She remembered the first time she caught wind of the pandemic beginning to break across the globe; her ear just barely picking up the sound of the radio over power drills and welders.
She hadn’t been able to find Abraham since things really went to shit.
The military did what they could when things started to get out of control, but even they had families to protect and sticking around to maintain order just seemed foolish. Multiple trips were made to the Ford residence with no luck; Cupboards were barren, clothes strewn about and that picture he had on the mantle of the two of them one Christmas was busted out of its frame. Despite her excuses - he didn’t have time to come for me. they were in trouble. he did come by but I was already gone. he’s still around, we just keep missing each other. - she couldn’t kill the eating thought that he just left her. His baby sister, abandoned. He broke his promise. Subconsciously, that was the biggest reason she kept one foot in Houston - he was still coming back for her. But with every day that passed with no sign of life, the hope that he was still close - and breathing - faded further and further away...
7
The camp was far beyond the rest of civilization. And good for it. The tops of buildings looked like shoe boxes interwoven with visibly abandoned streets in the far distance, gray in comparison to what it once used to be. This flat plot of land had barely been touched by human hands when it was found; turned up dirt and rock accompanied by machinery and port-a-potties. A construction sight soon to be turned into a number of vacation homes, that much they gathered from the weathered sign stuck in the ground at the base of the hill.
Breakfast ended an hour ago; watery eggs with sparse salt and bitter potatoes. Everyone was busy now, in the full swing of their day; taking buckets of dishes to the river to be washed while another group returned with wet laundry to hang dry.
“You should let these grow so I can push them to the side. You don’t really want all this hair in your eyes do ya, hun?”
Jane Ford, forty-two, a high school swim coach in what now seemed to be another life now sat in her husband’s tattered flannel and blue jeans tucked into yellow hospital socks. With her eldest between her knees, she snipped away at the atrocious bob the child had given herself a year prior. Her bangs stuck out every which way and no amount of water, time, or prayer would set the needle straight hairs into place. Jane huffed in defeat and dropped the comb and fabric scissors into a cup at her foot.
“I like it like this, momma.” The ten year old stated while playing with the torn ear of her stuffed bunny, given to Jane as a baby shower gift from her aunt. The dirty old thing brought her comfort more now than ever, a reminder of her favorite - well, her only - aunt.
‘You hug this little guy every single night. And wherever I am I’ll be sure to feel it.’
“Leave her hair alone, darlin’. If she likes it than she likes it.” Abraham watched his girls while sipping a black coffee, occasionally looking out into the horizon to scan for survivors or otherwise. “We Fords have the tendency to look good in whatever hairstyle we’re rockin’.” He winked at his daughter who grinned.
“Tell that to your tenth grade mullet.” “You still had a crush on me didn’t ya sweetheart?” “Oh, stick it!” “Last time I did we ended up with the twins..” “Ew, dad!”
He howled with laughter and beckoned his child to come towards him. She jumped up into his lap and he tussled her wet hair, the act earning him a curse from his wife. He pressed a kiss to the side of her head and took that moment to thank God. His family, all five of them, were together and secure. But every thankful thought was followed by the sudden sorrow he felt for his first family; his baby sister. Big Bad Bill.
He was a military sergeant and when he was called to duty the only thing on his mind was getting this issue under control. He only evacuated the quarantine camps when he had absolutely no choice and by the time he reached his home in the suburbs it was too late to go the inner city. She was just too far away from him. He couldn’t count on all fingers and toes how many times he’d been down in that area since then, practically swatting her home the second he could. Empty. She had taken the photo of them from his high school graduation on her fireplace.
Despite the “no man left behind” attitude instilled in him during boot camp, he just couldn’t bring himself to believe that his sister was still alive. She was tough, but she wasn’t survive-life-or-death-situations-tough. She was just a mechanic.
A familiar shrill voice followed by marching steps in the gravel snapped him out of his pity party. With a groan, he shooed his daughter away to play with the other kids before standing to meet the five-foot-two hurricane that was Marizol Espinosa. “Dios mio Abraham! My Rosita should have been home days ago!” The group he had sent out nearly three days ago had yet to return and despite the majorities silence, everyone was a little worried about their return. Marizol was not one of the silent ones.
“Te quiero fuera. Out there. Searching for them.” A manicured hand rested on a jutted hip, the other pointing a bullet like index into the ginger brutes face. Jane’s eyes flickered between the two cautiously as she busied herself with cleaning chunks of dark hair from her lap.
“Mary, I wouldn’t have sent the group that I sent if I didn’t think they could handle their hides. Give em the day darlin’, I’ll radio in from time to time and if nothin’ still I’ll send a crew after em.”
“Oh dios- get more people lost! Or killed! You listen to me jengibre...” As she opened her mouth to grill him with undoubtedly ruthless insults, the radio on his belt crackled with life. A female voice just barely came through. Abraham gave Marizol a smug grin.

“I’ve always loved you, and made you happy...and nothing else could come between...but now you’ve left me, to love another...you have shattered..all..of my dreams..” Breathless, Billie trudged along the side of the road as the afternoon heat caused beads of sweat to rolled down her jaw. With daylight running low she was worried this would be another unsuccessful supply run, having already searching multiple stores and homes throughout town. “You are my sunshine. My only sunshine..you make me happy when skies are gray..you’ll never know dear- fuckin’ hell it’s hot.”
She came to a stop outside of a gas station. A run down shack of a business that she had been to multiple times for a cigarette and a beer during her commute back home after work. But with its busted out windows and disregarded hoses it looked to be a completely foreign shop.
In and out quickly was the plan, and smooth enough it went. She packed what she could; in her months of scavenging she learned quickly that if you looked for things where those things weren’t meant to be, you could find what you needed. With a bowie knife in one hand and a half melted snickers from the cash register in the other she wandered the aisles freely, skimming underneath shelves for stray cans and water bottles. As she was preparing to leave, check today off as a successful enough day, one too many walkers began crowding the door from which she came, falling through busted windows and disemboweling themselves on shards of glass. She took down what she could with her bowie, hoping to clear a way to the road but for every one she killed two more crowded in its place. “Fuck.”
Searching hastily with a newfound feeling of vertigo, she spotted the employee exit behind the counter. A pipe had been lodged into the handle and bent outwards, trapping it shut. She cleared the counter, shivering at the feeling of rotting hands skimming the back of her arms before forcing the pipe out of place and slamming the door shut behind her. Her footsteps echoed off the walls as she searched her bag for a flashlight, her knife wielding hand still raised defensively.
“Grab them!”
Billie felt the sharp pain of a shoulder in her spine as she was tackled to the ground, her cheek crashing into the cold pavement and the wind escaping her lungs as her knife slid feet away from her grasp. She was frisked for her weapons, her bag tore violently from her shoulder as a knee remained snug between her shoulder blades.
“You one of the bitches that jumped us?” “Huh!? No!”
The cool metal of a gun barrel met her temple and she stuttered, “I ain’t here to hurt no one! I’m just stuck! On the bible, man!”
“What do you mean stuck?”
“There’s an ocean of them dead fools out that door behind me- gotta be packed to capacity by now. Man can you get off my back you’re hurting me!”
She was hoisted to her feet as a lamp clicked on. The room lit up in a small yellow glow, revealing a number of people surrounding her. To her left, brunette hair was pulled back under a military cap and tan hands secured in fingerless gloves held a glock steady to her head. Latina. Her glare was strong, eyebrows knitted as she trained her sights on Billie.
“There was a group in here yesterday. They locked us in.” In front of her, a young asian boy sat on a railing. They were in a garage. “Think you can help us out of here?” The man previously kneeling on her spine asked. He was the stockiest of the group; dark skinned, a gap tooth, and a flat cap concealing a bald head.
She didn’t have much of a choice. Either they all got out or none of them got out. “I can try once your friend gets that barrel off my cheek.” She huffed. A delivery truck sat begging to be used in the middle of the garage. A full tank but no keys, they say. Luckily for them, Billie didn’t need keys. She looked towards the latina, and only after the asian boys pleas did she lower her weapon.
After she jimmied the lock for a while, Billie got the door open and jumped into the driver seat, the latina following her every move as she popped off the connector to the ignition. She looked down to the only other woman and quirked a smile, “you wouldn’t happen to have a bobby pin would ya, hun?” Deadpanned, she dug into her hair and retrieved two bobby pins, slapping them into Billie’s hand who muttered a thank you. In seconds she had the pins poked into each hole of the connector and the truck growled with life. First the lights, brightening the room even more but she refrained from turning the engine, alas, suffocating them all with toxic fumes. Billie turned to the woman below, already used to the bitter gaze she sent her way. “You get the door open and you’re home free.”
“You should come with us.” Once stepping out of the truck she was greeted by the man that had tackled her to the ground, now smiling at her apologetically while extending a hand to shake, “call me T-Dog.” The latina huffed in protest. “She’s useful, Rosita.” Rosita.
“I would love to but uh..I got people waiting on me.” “They can come too.” “There’s no way you’re getting this truck up that road.” “We’ll wait.” “We can’t wait for some stranger, we’ve got people worried about us.”
“I could go with you!” It was the asian boy again, short black hair now covered with a baseball cap. He approached Billie with a smile that rivaled T-Dog’s. These weren’t people that Billie would coin as survivors - all but Rosita maybe - but here they were anyways. “I know my way around the city. We can pick up whoever you’re with and head back to camp.”
“So there’s more of y’all..?” “Loads.”
Rosita shook her head again. “No, no. That’s too many more mouths to feed and we’re already low on supplies.”
“Actually, Rosita, I don’t think supplies will be an issue...”
A voice echoed from within the newly unlocked truck, the sliding door disconnecting the storage space from the front seat now wide open. They followed the sounds of his footsteps to the back door where it was then unlocked from inside, flew open with a loud clang, and revealed stacks upon stacks of unopened cans, bags of chips, and soda. The man - the eldest of the group - smiled down at them, particularly Billie. “That solves that problem young lady.”
“Look at that,” the asian quipped, “we’ve got food for a few more mouths, someone who knows their way around a sticky situation, and you got us to watch your back. Sounds like wins all around to me!”
Everyone seemed to be in agreement of letting this squirrely stranger and her mystery companions join the group, all but Rosita, who had Billie wondering if she had cut her off in traffic one time.
“She helped us when we needed it, Ro,” he reasoned, “she didn’t have to.” He seemed keen on having Billie join them but she just shrugged; made no difference to her. Even the older man, who looked to have been on a fishing trip before they got locked in here, threw in his two cents. “Always room for a survivor.”
“I’ll tell you what,” Rosita squared up to Billie with folded arms. “You get that door open and you get to come back with us. Bring your boyfriend or whatever. Bien?”
“Gracias, a-mee-go.”
If you looked for things where those things weren’t meant to be, you could find what you needed. - Billie’s Law.
Billie knew garages like the back of her hand, and she knew of the spare clicker that came with every garage system. It was a shot in the dark, hoping the door would even work if she found it, but she searched high and low despite it. Even despite Rosita’s smug bark of ‘we looked for it already’. Like a dog on a scent she overturned garbage cans and tools boxes all while she watched impassively. No clicker. But underneath a uniform coat, beneath a stack of scrap metal, was a car jack, and Billie knew more than a few ways to use one of those.
With a loud bang and a rustic whine, Billie managed to jam the jack underneath the door enough to bend it and gave the handle a few pumps to lift it all while T-Dog and Rosita readied themselves to bash the skulls of any unwanted stragglers. She managed enough space to roll under and the asian boy quickly followed, keeping an eye out for her while she finished the job. Eyes stinging with sweat, Billie picked away at the lock while disembodied moans approached her, silenced by the lead pipe her new comrade armed himself with. The door was finally freed in minutes; they were free and she had a new home for her baby boy.
“Looks like you’re ours now.” The boy smiled again. “Glenn.”
She shook his hand, her grip firmer than his. “Billie.”

Valentine's Backcountry Ski Trip
@ Scottish Lakes High Camp
February 10 – 14, 2017 Julia and I took a trip to the North Central Cascades between Leavenworth, WA and Steven’s Pass. 5 days in a rustic backcountry cabin with only the basic amenities. We packed all our ski gear, warm clothes, food, and swimsuits to explore the winter wonderland. The mountain pass to access the Scottish Lakes parking area was closed Friday morning. Rain on Thursday had caused ‘extreme’ avalanche danger which is a rare event. After dropping off Skye at Central Bark doggy hotel we pushed our luck and drove towards the road closure, refreshing our phones every few minutes hoping the WSDOT crews had cleared the road. No luck by 9am when we arrived to Monroe near Steven’s Pass. We discussed our options with the mountain host, Eric, and eventually decided to take a 3-hour detour through Leavenworth via Chumstick highway. It worked out and we arrived just after our planned pickup time. Sadly, the people who waited for the pass to open arrived just minutes after us. We loaded a suburban with chains on the tires to drive up the mountain. After 4 miles we got out and unloaded the SUV’s. The snow was falling hard now. 3 snowmobiles waited to carry us the remaining 4 miles to camp. It was an exhilarating ride with Kenzie. Her only instructions were to lean with her into the turns so that she could power up faster. The speed threw snow onto our goggles and froze our butts to the seat. Larkspur cabin was our home for 4 nights. Kenzie showed us the features – including the wood stove, fire starters, lanterns, brown water bucket, food boxes, and location of the outhouse. We started a fire right away to thaw our backsides – which took considerable more effort than I’d like to admit. Luckily we’d have loads more practice at perfecting the wood stove fire over the trip. Miso soup and homemade dried bananas fueled us for our first foray into the backcountry. We suited up to ski tour before dark. High Country road led out of camp into a wide open slope. The ridge was easy to summit, giving us confidence. Unfortunately the rain event on Thursday, caused by a temperature inversion (camp was 18F yet rain fell), created a thick crust on the snowpack. This resulted in 4 inches of powder - on top of an inch of ice - on top of 4 feet of powder. The crust was easy to break with the weight of a skier but made turning difficult. We battled down that ridge, put skins back on and hiked back to the top. 1 skillful turn got our confidence refreshed before returning to the main lodge at camp. Meeting other campers was a highlight of our trip. First we met Melody and Wally (staying with their son Preston) who had help build/paint parts of camp after coming for years. It seemed that everyone we talked to had been at High Camp every year for 20+ years. This definitely tells a story about the feeling around camp, a friendly atmosphere for sure. Taco dinner was perfect with fresh veggies and spicy beef. Then we stuffed our full bellies into swimsuits before heading to the hot tub. It’s an old school wood fired tub with room for 4. It was 110 degrees – surrounded by piles of snow. Kenzie gave us a hose of cold water to cuddle bringing the tub temp down closer to 100F. A full moon lit our path on the walk back to our cabin – which was super hot when we returned. The benefit is that all our gear was dried, I just had to sit by the door drinking my hot chocolate in my underwear.    The downside of a wood stove is that it needs to be stoked every few hours. Ours had about 3 hours of life before you had to re-start from scratch. We woke up at 11pm and 3am to keep our cabin warm (which we later learned that other people just put on more clothes to save wood/effort). Saturday the 11th started at 8am with loads of blackberries. We packed bags with lunch, water/tea, avalanche tools, puffy jackets, map/gps/compass, and other touring gear. Then stopped by the main lodge to ‘check out’. This was a safety precaution so people knew where we were going and when we expected to be back. It was nice to think that someone would come looking if we fell off the side of a mountain. Hiking up High Country road to Glacier Peak Viewpoint was a blast. Julia broke trail as we ascended up the winding road. Just less than a mile and 300 feet elevation gain we decided to rip our skins off (the fish scale like fabric we stick to our skis to allow us to travel uphill) and ski the Northern Exposure slope towards Wedding Point. Then reattached our skins to hike up the Southern Exposure ridge where it was incredibly wind swept. We bailed out and headed lower towards Roundabout trail which ended up being too flat. We poled along this trail until we hit the road that took us back to camp for lunch.
At camp we met Jared (splitboarder) and Lyss who had just tested the Wild Bill Hill and found it had the same nasty crust as we experienced. Rich, another mountain host, recommended we hike up Wild Bill, then over to Cowabunga / Shangrila for our afternoon tour. Julia again broke the fresh snow making a zigzag path up the steep slope. A half mile and 300 feet higher we attempted to ski Cowabunga run. It looked perfect from the top, we were so happy to have found this area… until our 3rd turn. The first 2 were powdery - then the 3rd was that crust. The steep north facing slope held no snow, only windswept crust that made it impossible for us to ski. We both fell in-sync before deciding to hike back up and find another way down. We ended up skiing down the way we came up, which wasn’t half bad. It’s just sad how bad the snow conditions made us look as skiers - it was like we were beginners on the bunny slopes all over again - Power Wedges and 2-turns-stops.
9 transitions from going uphill to downhill (skins on / skins off) on Saturday gave us lots of practice with our new skis, boots, bindings, and skins.
Wyeth, a friend from Seattle, was in the lodge when we returned. It was coincidence we both booked Scottish Lakes this weekend, only finding out a few days before arrival. His group of 5 were in the larger Foxfire cabin for 2 nights. We caught up and talked about our adventures - giving us ideas for Sunday. The potluck is a tradition at High Camp on Saturday evenings. We brought BBQ pork, baked beans, and coleslaw - which we prepped in our cabin before the 6pm dinner time. There were about 20 people there, each bringing a unique dish / dessert / drink. Crepes with nutella and unStuffed peppers were 2 favorites. We sat with our new friends Jared and his wife Lyss chatting about our animals and other adventures (they like to boat and dive). Then Wyeth’s friend found a guitar while the table of older people began to sing, there was even a shot ski at some point.
Sunday morning Julia lit the fire as I made sandwiches for lunch. We ate oatmeal / chia with the remaining blackberries before heading out into the snow. It was about 20 degrees, forecast to warm to 28 by afternoon. After our daily check out, where we filled our bottles with warm water/tea, we were hiking uphill by 10am (not the earliest start, but it’s vacation!).
Jirka trail took us through the woods to the top of Powderpuff slope. We ripped skins and skied the shallow powder, with pure bliss. Compared to previous turns these were the softest and therefore best so far. We actually do remember how to ski - what a relief.
Ridgetop trail took us from Powderpuff up to High Point at 6000 feet elevation, about 3 miles from camp. The way up was concerning because we could not easily ski down the up-track because of the angle + trees + snow conditions. Luckily Wyeth’s friends Aubrey and Luke came charging by and reassured us the downhill section from High Point was ideal - so we kept going. Lunch on the ridge was awe inspiring. Looking towards the High Meadows as we sat on the tips of our skis in hip deep snow with the sun shining bright is the stuff of dreams. The salami sandwiches weren’t bad either. The ski down was a highlight of our trip. Something I’d consider a double black in resort areas (steep trees with variable snow conditions) that we skied reasonably easily. Following Wyeth’s groups tracks helped with our confidence too. The slope became less steep although the trees became more dense as we continued to enjoy the turns. Totally stoked when we arrived at the Boundary trail that took us out to Picnic Point. I skipped the jump from the trail to the road (someone else didn’t) and we reveled in the view with tea. Finally a quick skin back up High Country road and down Powderpuff back to camp with tired legs.
New people had arrived at camp during the day. A snowboarder was hiking up a hill near camp, a dog running along the trail with snowshoer’s, and kids were playing in the snow. We met Roxy the labradoodle and her owners Chris / Nicky in the lodge. We informed Rick that we ignored his advice again by climbing to High Point - which became a theme of our trip.
Restocking the wood pile from underneath our cabin was a chore. Julia slipped through a hole in the floor and tossed logs up to me. In no time we were warm again, with our gear hung for drying. Then we hit the hot tub. Rebecca, who is dating Marc the host, arrived shortly after us. She works at a non-profit for protecting salmon in the Northwest, visiting with her father. The rest of the evening was totally relaxing. The chili was too spicy for me, but luckily we had plenty of chocolate to cure this problem. Julia read her book about the naturalist Alexander von Humboldt aloud so we could learn about this important impacts on the world we enjoy so much.
Monday was another full day of touring, skiing, drinking tea, getting lost, and generally being adventurers. The one thing we didn’t do is ignore Rich’s advice. Although we originally planned to ski Okey Dokey to Bob’s Knob - Rich and 2 awesome ladies talked us out of it. Instead directing us towards Lake Julius, which had been one of our desired objectives anyway so having them tell us it was smart/possible was sweet.
The skin up High Country road to Picnic Point went quickly. I left my skins on for the slight downhill section while Julia decided to ski the half mile / 100 feet elevation loss to the meadow just before Lake Julius. From here we continued to follow the existing skin track that led uphill away from the lake, luckily we knew this with help from my GPS. Just before this trail that followed the summer route to Lake Ethel got steep we ripped skins. Our most risky / rewarding backcountry ski of the trip because there were no tracks to follow. We picked our way through trees back to the open meadow. Then Julia broke trail once again along Roaring Creek the final quarter mile to Lake Julius where we had lunch.
Hiking out was rewarding. Although it was uphill and our legs were tired - being in the woods is what we enjoy most. This new hobby of ski touring is something I can see us doing for a very long time. In the blink of an eye we were back atop Powderpuff, only 3 transitions this day (more of a tour than a skiing day).
Booking for next year went down as we checked in for the day. Campers get priority if they book while at camp so next February we’ll be doing the same thing (hopefully with less crusty snow). Then we finished the night with our hot tub soak where Rebecca joined us again. The water had just been refreshed so we were first to enjoy the cooler yet cleaner water as the wood stove puffed along.
Lasagna (dehydrated) dinner was ideal / easy. We packed bags in prep for our Tuesday departure. Finishing the night with more reading’s from the Humboldt biography. Eventually starting/stoking the fire at 10pm, 1am, and 5am to keep our cabin cozy.
7am I woke up to the sound of squirrels on our roof. Julia had been watching their little footprints around our cabin all weekend. We finally saw the buggers jump from tree to tree and across the snow. One even did a dance for us - to look cute so that we would feed it. It didn’t work, but it was cute. Highlight of the trip for Julia.
We packed our bags and left them in the cabin. Went out to ski our last few runs before meeting the hosts with our stuff at mid-mountain by 2:30pm. I was slow to start, convincing Julia to drink hot chocolate with me in the main lodge until almost 11am. Our tour took us back to Glacier View Point where we saw tracks downhill. They looked soft so we followed - bringing us down to Wedding Point. Surprisingly nice set of turns despite everywhere surrounding being icy. The long break here gave us time to reflect on the wonderful / tough weekend as birds flew all around. It was everything we expected plus more. We skied Powderpuff one last time on the way out and rested at the main lodge until it was time to depart. It took us about 45 minutes to ski the 4 miles of road - mostly groomed by the snow mobiles. Big views the whole way, a perfect exit from our Valentines Day adventure.
The trip was a combination of type 1 and 2 fun, hard yet enjoyable. I left feeling refreshed and recharged (and sore). It’s amazing to see our skills as skiers / tourers progress. I love being outdoors with Julia, looking forward to our next trip to Scottish Lakes High Camp and beyond.
