Might be a hot take, but I personally don't think Verlaine is an abuser. I get how he badly he hurt Chuuya, but he's been shown to care about Chuuya. Most, if not all the time abusers don't care about their victims. Verlaine didn't know how to act properly because he was most likely treated like that as a child. People seem to forget that Verlaine has trauma besides Rimbaud dying. I'm tired of people constantly demonizing Verlaine and thinking of him as a heartless abuser who doesn't care about Chuuya.

As far as we know, Verlaine being labeled an abuser is mostly regarding his relationship with Arthur Rimbaud, not Chuuya but to be fair, we've been staying out of the fandom for a while so maybe the tides have changed.

It is also important to note that past trauma isn't an excuse to abuse others, ever. It might make some behaviors more understandable but it definitely doesn't excuse them. And having trauma also doesn't make abuse suddenly not abuse.

And yet another side to things is, of course, portrayal. The official localizations have done a piss-poor job with many characters and pushed the anime's narrative instead of the original novel narrative which changes things a lot and warps characters into near unrecognizability. With so much confusion going on, it's easy for people to get the wrong idea about who the characters originally were (this has been a running theme with localizations lately).

We hope you can find more like-minded people soon and that you can enjoy your favorite characters without people mischaracterizing them due to whatever reasons they might have!

How do you feel about the X Reader side of the fandom? That's literally the only side of the fandom I've sought out and I haven't really seen any problems there (then again, I'm not really interested in diving too deep since I'm only watching the anime through Danny Motta reacting to it and generally don't really interact with any fandom I'm actively in). I do know sometimes people seem to dislike that side of fandoms (sometimes with good reason, other times for no reason at all other than to complain) but I was interested in your thoughts.

We haven't really interacted with the X Reader side of the fandom since that isn't our usual interest group but you're right that we rarely hear of any issues from them in the BSD fandom. There are other fandoms that have issues with those sides, mostly because of antis or people overreacting and taking "Female self-inserts aren't my thing" as a personal attack. But the BSD X Reader fandom just kinda... exists? That's a good thing of course, we don't need even more insane drama in this already messy fandom.

But like we said, we aren't involved with that side of the fandom so maybe there is drama we're missing. Though even if there is, it doesn't seem to spill out for all the world to see like the other issues this fandom has.
