The bulbous perennial x Amarine tubergenii Belladiva Series is a bigeneric hybrid between Amaryllis and Nerine. The clusters of trumpet-shaped flowers in shades of pink and white were producing a great autumn statement at the Royal Horticultural Society Garden Wisley, Surrey, UK.

Forming a display on this outdoor table were containers of Bessera elegans (coral drops) with long, fine stems supporting terminal cluster of elegant scarlet flowers. This corm forming perennial originates from Mexico.

Finally got around to buying some new Gladiolus murielae (I still call it Acidanthera murielae) (Abyssinian Gladiolus). Today’s #oneadayplant . Not as many flowers as you get with most Gladioli, but they are pretty big and strikingly impressive. Until in flower, you could be forgiven for thinking that they were Iris or Crocosmia, having slender, grasslike green foliage. . Pure white flowers with maroon hearts and a pleasing, soapy scent. . For me, they have proven to be hardy enough in pots and warm borders in the past, though I know a number of people overwinter them under cover. Up to you, but seems like a hassle. . Standing at around 1m (3’ 4”) tall, they make for a pretty unique and impressive plant when a good number of bulbs are planted. . Collecting seeds from my Freesia laxa (Syn. Anomatheca laxa). . Long been one of my favourite little bulbous plants. Dainty and cute with lovely pink flowers. . Bulbs don’t always make it through the winter (you can store in a greenhouse or similar, to increase your chances). As such, best to collect seed regularly to ensure a constant supply. While it is easy and indeed commonplace to see loads of beautiful pictures of purple Allium in flower on Insta, for me, the seedheads can be just as valuable. After all, these seed heads will be present for many months after the flowers have quickly faded. Allium cristophii (sometimes spelled christophii) (Star of Persia), today’s #oneadayplant . So, to be clear, I do really like them in flower and the shorter stemmed, but massive flowered A. cristophii is one of my favourites, with flowers that increase in size as the bulb develops. It also seeds fairly freely, helping to bulk up stock in a border. What I think we need to consider more is the value beyond the flower from many Allium species and varieties. . Where a great many bulbs slowly degrade after flowering, their foliage browning and slumping; Allium continue to shine. The foliage of many Allium species and cultivars is rubbish and degrades before the flower even opens quite commonly. . The value of an interesting seedhead, extending the season cannot be underestimated.
