The Virginia Office Of State Inspector General Says We're 2024-498
In an amazingly quick turnaround time, the Virginia OSIG got back to me already. I have a referral number already. They want specific charges concerning Ms. Schultze and I have reached out to my sources for them. Meanwhile, they stepped away from the Harry Jackson issue because it’s “too local”. That means we can handle it at the County Level. The cost of that starts at around $1200 and…

Big stuff
I hope the good people of Cheboygan, Michigan (our adopted town Up North) aren’t feeling too neglected.
The New York Times published a story this week about big things in small towns and failed to give Cheboygan credit for being home to “The World’s Largest Pick Axe.” (Ain't she a beaut...?)
Some say it’s a tribute to the town’s history as a lumber town, but I’ve always detected a little tongue-in-cheek humor in the spectacle.
As the Times piece put it, “For small places that will never have the tallest building or grandest stadium, having one of the world’s largest of something — truly, anything — can be a way to forge an identity, pull in visitors and, perhaps most of all, share a laugh.” (My italics)
Some examples of big stuff that did make the story:
World’s largest watermelon slice (Muscatine, Iowa)
World’s largest hand-painted Czech egg (Wilson, Kansas
World’s largest rocking chair (Casey, Illinois)
Worlds second-largest rocking chair (Cuba Missouri)
The story points out that four different states host large balls of twine, with a clear champion yet to be determined.

Trudy Ring at The Advocate:
Human Rights Campaign President Kelley Robinson addressed the Democratic National Convention in Chicago Wednesday, highlighting the stories of her family and other LGBTQ+ Americans, and drawing a sharp contrast between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris. “The story of America is the story of progress towards freedom. In just a few generations, my family went from being enslaved in Mississippi to the first free Black family in Muscatine, Iowa, to preparing to elect President Kamala Harris,” she said. Robinson spoke on a day that spotlighted LGBTQ+ rights. She also told the stories of LGBTQ+ trailblazers from across the country. The stories included those of a transgender Arizonayoung person whose courageous advocacy has helped safeguard equality in that state; a California couple, Sandy Stier and Kris Perry, whose marriage, officiated by then-Attorney General Kamala Harris, was the first in the state after the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals allowed California to stop enforcing the state’s ban on same sex marriages; and a Texas veteran whose service is a reminder of the community’s commitment to protecting and defending our freedoms and whose advocacy helped end “don’t ask, don’t tell.”
HRC chair Kelley Robinson spoke at the DNC last night to call for support for LGBTQ+ freedom without exception. #DNC2024

“Monkees were great — I am the Muscular Dystrophy community chairperson for Muscatine. Kathy Blakeney, MDA program coordinator for this area, and I had the pleasure of going backstage during the Monkees 20th Anniversary Tour at Burlington’s Steamboat Days on June 20. We were planning a celebrity auction for the 1986 Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon and we were hoping to get a Steamboat Days T-shirt autographed by everyone in the show to auction off. I was told that the Monkees were totally uncooperative and I was wasting my time, but during the first performance I managed to get a note to Peter Tork explaining our intentions. Peter gave my note to tour manager Jim Dotson and as a result we were taken backstage and not only did we get the T-shirt signed, but also quilt squares for a celebrity autograph quilt we will raffle off and photos of everyone signing the items. There was a lot of talk about how uncooperative the Monkees were and I would like to set things straight. Had it not been for Peter Tork we would never have been able to get backstage or get our autographs. Everyone was extremely helpful and very friendly. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Jim Dotson, Gary Puckett, Herman’s Hermits, the Grassroots, David Jones and Micky Dolenz (who stopped to sign the items and say hello even though they were not feeling well), and especially Peter Tork who made it all possible. I know the autographed shirt will help us raise a lot of money and my backstage pass is a wonderful souvenir of the show. Thanks guys! Sincerely, Cindy Bryant” - Quad City Times, July 5, 1986

Day 24 of @augusnippets
Prompts: Animal attack/Bear trap/Land mine
Content warnings : Brief descriptions of murdered cadavers, consanguineous relationship, referenced infidelity, unearthly animal attack
Small part of "In Mortality", an au of Cut Down The Altar (creator will be in the tags)
Author's note: Sander's Vale -> imagined city in Diane County
April 18th, 1998
Matthew Hall and his little brother Devon had gone to the edge of the woods to pick up flowers to gift to their step-sister Jasmine, who had fallen ill just a few days ago.
Normally they wouldn't dare delve deeper into the forest, no still sane person in Nox did, for everyone knew all too well that the violent, unprovoked beast attacks were far more frequent in such isolated and wild areas.
But something caught Devon's attention just as they were about to leave, and he urged Matthew to take a look. It was a woman's dead body, so horrendously disembowelled that it couldn't have been the doing of another human being.
Devon was handling the sight better than Matthew imagined, not looking like he'd throw up despite still visibly scared and shaking. Matthew noticed that there was something else, someone else in the nearby clearing. A man, possibly the woman's husband, with his body mangled beyond recognition, and with so many exposed innards that he needed to cover his little brother's eyes before he could land an eye on the mutilated corpse.
They rushed back home and informed their step-father, and fortunately the police officer on the other hand believed their story. They didn't know what the authorities did with the cadavers, but they could only hope those two had been given a proper burial.
---- April 17th, 1998
It was 10 P.M when an old and clearly overused jeep made an abrupt stop on the road near a woodland.
Cousins Tabitha and Virgil McKeon had once again stolen their now gone grandfather's car to escape from their family all the way back in the farmlands of Diane, just far away enough that they could carry on their secret affair.
They had escaped to Hemera for the first few months, but as people began to recognize them, the fear that the truth would reach their family struck and they had to change plans.
They would have never stopped around Nox, save for if a gas station was needed, instead, they simply intended to use the county's empty roads to have an easier access to Muscatine. But luck hadn't been on their side this night. The car died in the middle of the road, and Virgil couldn't find the reason for it, already setting off Tabitha's bad mood.
Against better judgement, Virgil decided that a small romantic escapade inside the woods wouldn't hurt.
"Let's just enjoy the romantic moment, Tabby, the forest isn't so bad"
"Sure, very romantic. We're as good as lost in this dead county, while your poor sweet Jessica is fast asleep all the way back in Sander's Vale, completely unaware that her handsome Gigi is cheating on her"
"Oh come on, honey, I already told you: my parents set us up and she never meant anything to me. You're so much more beautiful than-"
A sudden loud noise cut Virgil off. It sounded like a twig being crushed, but also like bones fracturing outside of a person's body.
The secret couple stayed silent and still for many seconds that felt like hours, preparing for if they needed to run for their lives. Nothing happened after that.
Finally, Tabitha found her voice again. "Do you think it's a bear?" She whispered, terrified and pale as snow.
Virgil didn't answer and instead started slowly approaching the spot he believed had been where the noise had come from. Shaking slightly, he looked down behind the tall bushes.
Just a pigeon skeleton. 'It must have fallen down a tree or something', he thought to himself.
With his fear now gone, he turned around back to Tabitha with his usual confidence back, like nothing had happened at all.
"Don't worry, baby, it's nothing to worry about-"
Something jumped on top of him, something that almost looked like a wolf, but so large it couldn't have been one. Its growls sounded like three car motors all at the same time, being only drowned out by Virgil's pained and horrified screams as the creature tried to bite into him.
Tabitha couldn't help but let a large scream escape her throat at the sight, and she ran as fast as her legs could handle, but she didn't get very far after the creature realized it didn't actually want any witnesses.
The police contacted their family, who in shame, didn't even bother to pay for gravestones, leaving the two to rot in shallow graves inside the cemetery.

Ambassador Alexander G. Clark (February 25, 1826 – May 31, 1891) was a businessman and activist who served as Ambassador to Liberia (1890-91) where he died in office. He is notable for suing in 1867 to gain admission for his daughter to attend a local public school in Muscatine, Iowa. The case of Clark v. Board of School Directors achieved a constitutional ruling for integration from the Iowa State Supreme Court in 1868. He was a prominent leader in winning a state constitutional amendment that gained the right for African Americans in Iowa to vote (1868). Active in church, freemasonry, and the Republican Party, he became known for his speaking skills and was nicknamed “the Colored Orator of the West.” He earned a law degree and became co-owner and editor of The Conservator in Chicago. His body was returned from Liberia in 1892 and buried in Muscatine.
Since both his wife and mother were formerly enslaved, he took a keen interest in the abolitionist movement. He became an anti-slavery speaker soon known as the Colored Orator of the West. He assisted the fugitive enslaved being sheltered by the Underground Railroad with donations of food.
He helped to organize the 60th Iowa Colored Troops, originally known as the 1st Iowa Infantry. Ineligible for service himself due to a disability, he turned over his $2 commission per recruit to the men.
He began the campaign to enfranchise African American men in his state. His efforts were successful. In 1867 Senator John Crookham of Iowa successfully lobbied the state’s legislature to have the word “white” stricken from the state constitution.
In 1884 he became the second African American graduate of the University of Iowa Law School. His son became the first graduate in 1879. He moved to Chicago and purchased and edited the Conservator. He moved to the East Coast where he worked as an attorney. He corresponded publicly with his longtime friend Frederick Douglass. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence
