A Cursory Look At Dinosaur Jr.’s Impact & Influence, Pt. 2: From Great to Good to Not-So-Good to Cultural Fallacy
A little housekeeping on the influence tip. Please see previous post or some of this one may not make sense. Actually, I’m not sure why anyone would start with this post (despite this week’s scattershot approach to the Dinosaur Jr. legacy)...unless you’re a member of a band featured below and have set a Google Alert on the name of your endeavor. In said post, I describe a form of Dinosaur Jr.’s influence that resulted in blatant imitation but sits somewhere better than just watered-down paint-by-numbers mediocrity.
Early Dinosaur Jr. left a sizeable fingerprint on the underground, especially the band’s most popular album of the original era, 1988’s Bug. This is of course an assumption, but the following three bands do sounds as if that record (or another) or a Dinosaur Jr. live performance figures into their respective formation stories. The 1991-1994 period framed the highest Dinosaur Jr.’s profile would ascend prior to the 2005 reunion (and going forward to present day). Of course, something else it frames is the Nevermind-fueled industry fixation with distorted guitars with melody and mope. Though Cobain didn’t put a Dinosaur Jr. album on his list of 50 biggest influences, he did ask Mascis to join Nirvana (twice) and drawing a sonic line backwards or sideways from Nirvana to Dinosaur Jr. is pretty easy, at least on a fundamental level. But we’re not here to listen to Nirvana clips.
Monsterland made some enjoyable if not traditional noise-pop collision of Dino Jr. and shoegaze. Bassist Thom Monahan went on to be a member of The Lilys and The Pernice Brothers, was a sought-after producer regarding the West Coast “freak-folk” (a term that gives me hives) scene, recording Devendra Banhart and most of Vetiver’s discography. But backing up to Monsterland, the band released some good 7” dollar-bin burners and EP’s (some of which were on the noise-pop label SpinArt) before being signed to major label fake indie, Seed Records. For that imprint, Monsterland released its only full-length, 1993’s Destroy What You Love, on which it seemed to hit its stride. They broke up in 1994 but, unsurprisingly, recently reunited for some live sets.
“Insulation” by Monsterland - Official video (that got a little traction on 120 Minutes) of song from the Destroy What You Love album.
Just because the Dinosaur Jr. blueprint knocks you upside the head, below I’ve included a track from obscure Florida band, Gruel, who also had a strange connection to underground metal (had a split release with Phobia…?!?).
Gruel “Out of Mind” from 1991 album of the same name.
Then there was the slightly better-remembered Rein Sanction, also from Florida. This trio of longhairs most certainly worshipped at the altar Dino Jr. They released two albums, both with several tracks of totally serviceable and heavy indie-rock, on Sub Pop and remain somewhere near the bottom of the obscurity abyss.
Rein Sanction “F Train” from their first Sub Pop album, 1991’s Broc’s Cabin.
The (very) incomplete list is of bands that emerged during the early-90s indie-rock onslaught carrying a serious torch for Dinosaur Jr. There’s some good-to-great records hiding in some of these band’s discographies, and it should be noted that this list is a simplification of history in some cases.
Pond, Sprinkler, Lotion, Magic Dirt, Overwhelming Colorfast, fluf, Walt Mink, Gumball (Dino Jr.-related), Truly, God’s Acre, New RadFlower/Versus, mid-period Posies, Salt, Budd, Cell, St. Johnny, Starfish, Swervedriver (first two albums), The Wrens, Eugenius, Magnapop, Hum, Poster Children and early Teenage Fanclub. While we’re still discussing music that exists on the correct side of the credible sense, when TAD defected from Sub Pop to navigate a dramatic and detrimental time with the big boys, the Seattle heavies enlisted J. Mascis to produce the first of two albums made for the first of two major labels. Dinosaur Jr. was the undeniable inspiration behind that album’s “Gouge”
Tad “Gouge” from 1993’s Inhaler album.
And moving along through the 90s, Dinosaur Jr. must have been on Josh Homme’s mind during the making of Queen of the Stone Age’s early singles and first album.
“Regular John” from QOTSA’s self-titled 1998 debut full-length.
On a more rightly-forgotten note, DIG, Green Apple Quickstep, Best Kissers In The World, Vanilla Trainwreck and other peddlers of alt-rock mediocrity sometimes had a hint of Dinosaur Jr. in their sound, but why waste readers time with that?
Lastly, one of the most infuriating aspects of the Dinosaur Jr. legacy is the omnipresent association with the 90s “slacker” culture or aesthetic. On a much larger scale, this is a big-picture myth about early-to-mid-90s underground activity. J. Mascis was not a slacker, nor was anyone else of note in the 90s. How could there be slackers everywhere during an era of unprecedented independent label/underground activity? Everyone was busy. Mascis just didn’t have much patience for interviews and believes the music should speak for itself. This created some hilarious and awkward moments, the best of which is this semi-legendary catastrophe, which I actually remember viewing when it aired (then trying to convince all of my young social group how funny J. Mascis was). Let’s end this post with some laughs, shall we?

Left my older neighbour a jam jar of flowers this morning. Hadn't seen him much through the winter but we had a wave and a chat from our windows last week whilst I did the washing up and he smoked a 'ciggie'. I'm not sure if he even likes flowers but everyone likes a surprise right? I also watched 'I Daniel Blake' last night and apart from the bleakness of its harsh reality I thought the intergenerational relationships in the movie showed a lot of hope and opportunity. We have to look after each other and by doing so we can learn new things and feel great purpose! #FlowerSurprise #JamJarFlowers #Surprise #LookAfterEachOther #Purpose #ItsNiceToBeNice #Flowers #Estate #Community #Hackney #RadFlowers (at Upper Clapton)
